Maccabi returned to Bloomfield stadium for the MD23 WINNER league match against Bnei Sakhnin knowing they need a victory to narrow the five-point gap from the top.
With only four matches left to play in the regular season before the Playoff kicks off, Zarko Lazetic’s side would like to build on last week’s victory away to Kiryat Shmona in order to string a successive victory streak.
On the bench alongside Roy Mishpati, Lazetic named Tyrese Asante, Eran Zahavi, Raz Shlomo, Yonas Malede, Elad Madmon, Ofir Davidzada, Ido Shahar and Osher Davida.
Prior to kickoff, a minute of applauds was held in memory of former player and team manager Moshe ‘Pepo’ Israeli who passed away last month at the age of 90.
Lazetic was forced to make a change at the restart as Tyrese Asante came on for Addo. Two minutes later, Nemanja Stojic burst forward from the halfway line before slipping the ball to Dor Peretz. But Sakhnin’s keeper Abu Nil charged off his goal line and dived at the feet of Maccabi’s captain to save.
Two minutes after the hour mark the deadlock was finally broken as Patati got his well-deserved goal. Sakhnin’s defense failed to clear the ball which reached Kanichowsky on the edge of the area before the diminutive midfielder flicked it to the Brazilian wizard who still had his work cut out as he rounded the keeper and fired home. Lazetic made his second change on the night as Ido Shahar came on for Peretz in the 72nd minute adding a fresh pair of legs into midfield.
Victory was secured in the 86th minute as Turgeman forced a mistake from a Sakhnin midfielder before picking up the ball and firing the third last Abu Nil for the third. Patati and Turgeman were given a standing ovation as they came off and were replaced by Osher Davida and Eran Zahavi. Within a minute Zahavi received the ball just inside the area before sending a dipping shot which landed on the roof of the net.

In an unprecedented move, once again concerning the Sakhnin soccer team, the Israel Football Association ruled today (Tuesday) for a rematch between Sakhnin and Beitar Jerusalem in the quarter-finals of the State Cup.
Last week, the Israel Football Association ruled a technical loss against Sakhnin after it failed to arrange for the soccer game in the quarter-finals of the State Cup against Beitar two weeks ago, as it did not provide the number of security guards and ushers required to ensure the safety of the fans of both teams, despite being given ample time to prepare and fulfill its obligations as required by the regulations of the Israel Football Association and the Israel Police.
This is not the first time that Sakhnin failed to fulfill its commitment to ensure the safety of fans, as only two years ago its game against Maccabi Haifa was canceled for the same reason, just moments before the kickoff, and ultimately received a punishment in the form of a technical loss.
After receiving a similar punishment for this behavior again from the court of the Israel Football Association last week, Sakhnin appealed its punishment to the league, which issued an unprecedented ruling in its favor.
The head of the tribunal, Professor Miguel Deutsch, noted in the ruling that this is a "difficult and borderline case" and even suggested that a high financial penalty be imposed on Sakhnin to be paid to both the management of the association and to Beitar Jerusalem for the significant financial losses resulting from the game cancellation two weeks ago, but ordered that a rematch be held between the two for the last ticket to the semi-finals of the State Cup.
The league accepted Sakhnin's claim that it tried to hold the scheduled game and that it proposed several solutions that all turned out to be unacceptable.
"The appellant was forced to change between fields due to police requirements and the refusal of the mayor of Haifa to allow it to play at a field in Haifa. It proposed various solutions to the problems and tried to meet the extreme security requirements it received."
Although it was stated that the police demands were entirely reasonable, the ruling stated that "there was no possibility for the appellant to meet these requirements within the short time available to her due to the need to move between fields."
Regarding the claim that this is a reward for Sakhnin for its unprofessionalism, Judge Deutsch wrote that this is "an exceptional step, limited to very special circumstances."

Several months have passed since the historic moment when an Israeli Premier League soccer game was stopped before the opening whistle and for the first time in the league's history
The Sakhnin team refused to return to play and the Israel Football Association ruled that as punishment, a point would be detracted from Be'er Sheva's goal difference and the game would be ruled a 0:0 tie.
Now, the two teams are set to meet again at Sakhnin's temporary stadium in Akko and there are those who fear a violent reprisal by the Sakhnin fans.
Concerns of a riot come after Be'er Sheva fans shared threats they received on social media from Sakhnin fans in which they were warned not to go to the game in Akko.
To protect the fans, the Be'er Sheva team is considering not selling them the visitors' section tickets allotted to them by the Sakhnin management. Israel Police and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir are also in the picture and have announced that they would deal harshly with any violence - both threats or in practice.

Israeli journalist Saeed Hassanein, announcer for Sakhnin FC home games, gave an interview to Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV calling the IDF an 'occupying army' and Israel an 'enemy.' This sparked controversy as he also justified a militant's respect for Islamic laws during captivity.
Hassanein discussed the release of Hisham al-Sayed and discouraged Israeli Arabs from joining the IDF, describing the military path as 'immoral and unnational.'
In response, Eran Kalfon, the chairman of the leagues, expressed shock over Hassanein's remarks, calling them unacceptable both socially and within Israeli soccer.
Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar demanded Hassanein's immediate dismissal, emphasizing that such statements undermine coexistence between Israelis and Arabs and harm solidarity in Israeli soccer.

2024As the war between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies
Kafr Manda and Sakhnin – two Arab towns in northern Israel – have found themselves in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons
Maccabi arrived at Doha stadium for the MD8 ONE ZERO League encounter away to Bnei Sakhnin aiming to record their fourth successive league win and fifth in all competitions
Robbie Keane’s charges currently lead the table with 16 points from the opening six matches thanks to a superior (17-3) goal tally than the season’s surprise team Maccabi Bnei Reineh who are second but played two more matches
Maccabi began the match on the front with some slick passing which carved Sakhnin’s defence open as early as the 3rd minute
Roy Revivo picked Eran Zahavi on the edge of the before the 36-year-old’s delicate backheal flick released Gabi Kanichowsky through
The diminutive midfielder calmly slotted his shot into the bottom corner to put Maccabi infront with his second league goal and third in all competitions
Dor Peretz could have doubled the score two minutes later as he found himself unmarked in the center of the area
but the midfielder sliced his shot wide of the target
Maccabi continued to dominate and came close once again as Dan Biton dribbled into the area on 27 before squaring towards the goal mouth only for Peretz to once again miscue his effort wide
In the 43rd minute Felicio Milson charged into the area and cut the ball back for Zahavi but the veteran marksman who pounced on the chance to score
blasted his shot over the crossbar
Maccabi returned for the second half knowing that their stubborn opponents are capable of clawing their way back into the game
In the 55th minute Peretz came close once again after Joris van Overeem won a challenge and fed the midfielder whose powerful drive was blocked by Sakhnin’s captain Maroun Gantous for a corner
This was van Overeem’s final contribution on the night as he was replaced a minute later by Osher Davida
Right on the hour mark Peretz finally got his goal as Kanichowsky spotted him on the edge of the area
on his 300th appearance for Maccabi unleashed a thunderous right foot shot which was tipped by Mohamad Abu Nil onto his crossbar before striking the keeper’s back and landing inside the goal
Milson came close in the 66th minute as the Angolan winger rifled Biton’s cut-back over the crossbar
Three minutes later Milson’s shot forced Abu Nil to stretch himself and save
while a minute later Zahavi bagged his 400th career goal with a perfect volley to increase the lead to 3-0
Biton and Zahavi bowed out before the match was restarted as Keane introduced Kiko Bondoso and Dor Turgeman
A mistake in Maccabi’s defence on 75 allowed Ilay Elmkeis to beat Roy Mishpati for close range and cut the deficit
Keane made his final two changes in the 77th minute as Eyal Golasa and Yonatan Cohen replaced by Peretz ams Milson
Cohen’s impact was almost instant as his pinpoint cross found Davida unmarked at the far post
but from almost point blank range the winger managed to guide the ball to the wrong side of the post
In the 82nd minute however Sakhnin scored their second through Mohamad Shaker whose low drive made it 3-2 and ensured a nervous ending to the game
Cohen led a counter attack in the 87th minute before his attempt of a square ball to Turgeman was cleared by Sakhnin’s defence
The fourth official indicated six minutes of added time with Sakhnin desperate to grab a late equaliser
Davida could have sealed the win in the closing minute as he broke into the area to run clear through but with only the keeper to beat had his effort saved by Abu Nil seconds before Orel Grinfeeld blew the final whistle
Maccabi will now turn their attention to Thursday’s Conference League home match against Gent in Serbia

1 min readThe former match announcer for Israel Premier League team Bnei Sakhnin FC has reportedly been arrested after an interview in which he labelled Hamas “humane” surfaced in Israeli media
also urged Arab-Israeli citizens not to join the IDF
Speaking to the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV, Hassanain remarked that the way Hamas treated female hostages during their captivity “proves conclusively who is the barbarian and who is the humane one” in the context of the war in Gaza
In the interview, obtained and aired by Israel’s Channel 14, Hassanain said that freed hostage Omer Shem Tov kissed his captors’ forehead during the handover ceremony staged by Hamas “willingly
because he appreciates and respects what the person who held him did for him”
“He who only thinks about joining the occupation army,” he continued
“must think a million times where he is going and how he is selling his conscience
his moral compass and his religion on this immoral path”
released an official statement saying that Hassanain had been sacked from his volunteer role as the team’s play-caller for home games and that “it was made clear to him that the things he said do not represent the club”
Following the announcement of Hassanain’s dismissal, Israeli police raided his home and arrested him on suspicion of incitement, according to Haaretz
Israeli Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar likewise condemned Hassanain’s comments
“This is a slap in the face of the Israeli soccer league
Bnei Sakhnin club can’t be associated with such things
otherwise we will not be able to bridge the rifts in Israeli society,” Zohar said
Israeli Football Leagues Administration chairman Erez Kalfon added in a letter sent the club: “We were shocked by the outrageous
false and unacceptable statements made by Mr Saeed Hassanain
who holds an official position within Bnei Sakhnin
as presented in his interview with Al-Aqsa TV – the television channel of the despicable terrorist organisation Hamas
“These statements are, to say the least, unacceptable in Israeli society, and certainly in Israeli soccer.”
It follows the arrests of 12 people at a match in Be’er Sheva
when violent clashes broke out after Bnei Sakhnin supporters turned their backs during the playing of the national anthem
were enraged by the move and a brawl ensued when they stormed the pitch and beat the opposition fans with long sticks
A dozen rioters were arrested as players and referees took shelter away from the pitch
while hundreds of people sprinted onto the turf to join in the fight

Zahavi tried curling the resulting free kick which was blocked by one of Sakhnin’s players who stood in the wall
Maccabi tried desperately to level the score and came close within a minute as Luckassen managed to head a Kanichowsky free kick goal-bound
only for Amos to pull a spectacular point blank range and deny the Dutchman

the dual between Zahavi and Amos continued as Guiagon released the veteran striker but his effort was blocked by Sakhnin’s keeper

Zahavi must have thought he had scored the winner inside injury time
Zahavi headed Guiagon’s cross from close range
but Amos pulled yet another stunning save to keep his goal locked
Jovanovic wasted another chance in the dying seconds and as the ball ballooned into the stand it was proved that it is clearly not Maccabi’s night
Maccabi arrived at Doha stadium where they suffered the first defeat on the opening day of the season for a match against a side they failed to beat in two attempts
Five days after the 5-0 victory over Hapoel in the Tel Aviv derby
suspensions and injuries forced Maccabi’s coach Mladen Krstajic to make several changes
With Matan Baltaxa serving a one-match touchline ban
Enric Saborit returned to the left side of defence with Shahar Piven moving to center alongside Josue Sa
Andre Geraldes who made a substitute appearance against Hapoel returned to the starting line-up and completed the back four that protected Daniel Peretz in goal
Dan Glazer led the team out wearing the captain’s armband as the midfield anchorman

suffered an ankle injury in training was withdrawn and replaced by Eyal Golasa
Gabi Kanichowsky and Oscar Gloukh were also named by Krstajic in midfield with Djordje Jovanovic and Stipe Perica leading the line upfront
In complete contrast to last week’s Tel Aviv derby the atmosphere at Doha stadium lacked the bite of a match in the top Playoff as less than 500 Maccabi fans travelled to Sakhnin
Sakhnin’s central defender Ante Puljic picked a knee injury
limped off and replaced in the 10th minute by Odah Marshall
Maccabi’s loanee Moflah Shalattah blasted a shot high over Daniel Peretz’s goal

Jovanovic’s aerial supremacy saw him head the resulting corner into the path of Josue Sa who couldn’t convert the ball over the line from close range
Perica carved Sakhnin’s defence open as he released Jovanovic through in the 39th minute
but the Serbian striker was denied by Mahmoud Kandil who charged out of his goal and saved for a corner
Saborit rose high to head the resulting Oscar Gloukh corner towards goal but once again Kandil reacted well
Peretz also kept himself busy as he was forced to a full stretch to catch a dangerous Guy Melamed shot in the 41st minute
Erez Pappir’s halftime whistle sent both teams into the dressing rooms to regroup and return for the second half in hope that the stalemate will be broken
The second half began where the first one left off as none of the teams seemed to be able to carve an opening
Maccabi that looked dangerous mostly in set pieces
came close in the 54th minute as Saborit reached a corner but his attempt of a toe-poke was caught by Kandil. Golasa flashed a right foot shot wide of the post in the 61st minute before Jovanovic blasted high over the bar less than 60 seconds later
A minute later Krstajic made four changes as Ofir Davidzada came in for Saborit at left back
Sheran Yeini and Brandley Kuwas stepped in Gabi Kanichowsky and Gloukh while Tal Ben Chaim replaced Perica
An Andre Geraldes dangerous cross from the right sailed across the face of Sakhnin’s goal in the 65th minute but Jovanovic failed to connect
Maccabi came even closer a minute later as Ben Chaim sent Jovanovic into the area only for his shot to be saved by Kandil’s feet
Seconds after being introduced as a substitute for Sakhnin
Ari Moura cut sent a powerful left foot shot that narrowly curled wide of Peretz’s post on 72. Krstajic made his fifth and final change as Eylon Almog stepped in for Eyal Golasa in the 76th minute. Ben Chaim fired high and wide over Kandil’s goal in the 79th minute as Maccabi tried desperately to break the deadlock
In the 84th minute Almog dribbled towards the area and exchanged passes with Jovanovic before his shot was blocked by a Sakhnin’s defender
Two minutes later Maccabi reached their best chance as Yeini sent Ben Chaim clear through before the forward shrugged off a defender’s challenge but once again Kandil pulled a reflex save
Almog came close as his attempt of a cross in the 88th minute eluded Sakhnin’s defence and keeper but struck the crossbar and bounced out
Deep inside injury time Sakhnin scored as Guy Melamed exchanged passes with Marshall before firing past Peretz to inflict Maccabi their second defeat of the Playoff
a venue they failed to record a victory in the league last season
in a bid to keep their top spot in the table achieved after the 3-0 derby victory last week
Vladimir Ivic made several changes from the side which beat Hapoel at Bloomfield as he welcomed back into the side Andre Geraldes at right wing-back with Matan Hozez on the opposite flank at left wing-back
Shahar Piven and Enric Saborit lined-up as the three central defenders in-front of goalkeeper Daniel Peretz
Nir Bitton pushed slightly forward from his regular centra defender position as he joined Dor Peretz in the midfield engine room
Oscar Gloukh was named at the top of the midfield right behind Eran Zahavi and Djordje Jovanovic who led the attack
Ofir Davidzada and Maor Kandil who all waited for their chance to make an impact
Maccabi began the match with pressure on the home side right from the start as it took Vladimir Ivic’s side 4 minutes to creat the first chance
Andre Gerlades whipped in a cross from the right which was volleyed by Oscar Gloukh forcing Gad Amos to stretch himself and push the ball out
Less than sixty seconds later the dual between Gloukh and Amos continued as the diminutive youngster blasted a shot from the edge of the area which was making its way into the top corner before the keeper turned over the crossbar
While Sakhnin struggled to cross the halfway line
Maccabi kept pushing forward down the channels with Matan Hozez down the left and Geraldes down the right sending crosses into the dangerzone
a counter attack which began with Beram Kayal saw Shahar Piven clear the ball from the goalmouth before Guy Melamed could head in at the far post
Maccabi’s defence failed to clear the resulting corner which fell to Hasan Hilu who slotted home the loose ball to the delight of the home fans
But Sakhnin’s celebrations were shortlived as VAR intervened and canceled the goal following a handball in the move which led to the goal
The game seemed to have opened up as Gloukh carried a counter attack in the 20th minute
raced half the length of the pitch and released Eran Zahavi whose shot from the edge of the area but missed the target
Skahnin were denied twice by the woodwork in the 29th minute as a Daniel Peretz was beaten by a Hilu curling cross which struck the post before Ovadia Darwish headed the rebound against the crossbar
Sakhnin continued to look dangerous as Kayal narrowly missed the target as he sent a shot from inside the area wide of Peretz’s goal right on the half hour mark
David Fuxman’s halftime whistle sent both teams into the dressing room to regroup and with no changes at halftime Maccabi returned after the interval determined to break the deadlock
Three minutes after the restart Kayal float another dangerous cross which was headed by Ante Puljic at the far post only for Peretz to dive and save on his line
In the 55th minute Gloukh carved Sakhnin’s defence as he released Zahavi who was let down by his first touch allowing Amos to charge off his line and recover the ball
While Ivic was preparing to make a triple substitution Sakhnin got the ball in the back of the net as Nicolao Dumitro was put through by Melamed and calmly slotted home past Peretz
But once again VAR came to the rescue and spotted an offside to rule the goal out
Ivic made his changed as Hozez made way for Ofir Davidzada
Maor Kandil replaced Andre Geraldes and Guiagon Parfait came in for Dor Peretz
