An Israeli girl sprays foam during 2017 Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations in Jerusalem
Students from a Jewish school were attacked April 30 by Israeli teens in Tiberias after foam-spraying got out of hand
Milken Community School designed its eighth-grade class trip to create authentic encounters with Israeli teens
but not the kind that include pepper spray and trips to the ER
The Jewish day school’s Israel trip took a frightening turn Wednesday when local Jewish teens attacked the students at a public Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration in Tiberias
said in a letter to parents that 11 boys and girls were taken to a hospital after roughhousing with shaving foam escalated into a violent confrontation
The incident occurred at a promenade in the Galilean coastal city
where 75 Milken students and their chaperones arrived Wednesday night for Independence Day festivities
Some of the students were fooling around with foam spray
the Milken group moved to a different area
several Israeli teens approached the students “in an aggressive confrontational manner.” She and a teacher saw this happening and tried to separate the groups
and we directed the Milken students to go back to the buses immediately.”
“The Israeli teenagers chased our students and their much older siblings came from the other direction on the promenade and sprayed pepper spray at 10 Milken students,” she continued
The police arrived and identified the perpetrators
and all the students were “physically fine” after being checked out at a local hospital
The Tiberias police department could not be reached for comment
The situation was “terrifying at moments,” Shulkind said
But she was proud of how her students supported each other through it — washing each other’s eyes out with milk to help mitigate the pepper spray
and coaching each other to breathe when they were panicking
The incident exposed an inherent tension in Israeli tourism during wartime. Shulkind, who leads one of the largest Jewish day schools in the U.S.
said Milken came “as an act of Zionism to experience Israel for all of its wonder and all of its pain post-Oct
The group had visited Hostage Square in Tel Aviv earlier in the trip; they spent Yom HaZikaron in schools in the Galilee
experiencing the day of remembrance alongside their Israeli peers
Nestled along the western coast of the Sea of Galilee
Tiberias was far out of reach of the Hamas-led attack of Oct
drones and rocket fire have regularly forced residents into bomb shelters
Shulkind — who cancelled last year’s trip because of the war — tried to empathize with the unruly locals
“These are kids who potentially lost family
or homes destroyed,” she said on the phone
“There’s been a lot of trauma in Israeli society
If Milken had arrived at the Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration wearing face paint and glitter
“I think it was really complicated for them
that it was Jewish Israelis,” she said
“And what an interesting experience for them to understand that Israel is a complicated place
and the from-afar version of a country is very different than when you’re in it.”

making his 31st appearance this season and 65th for the club kept his place in goal
Raz Shlomo and Nemanja Stojic lined-up as the two central defenders in front Mishpati
Idan Nachmias on the right and Ofir Davidzada completed Maccabi’s back-four on the left
Joris van Overeem returned to the anchorman role just behind Gabi Kanichowsky and Dor Peretz who led the team out with the captain’s armband
Weslley Patati on one flank and Osher Davida on the other supplied the width to Maccabi’s formation with Dor Turgeman leading the line
Maccabi began the match with purpose and intention to score an early goal
It didn’t take long as in the third minute Tiberias struggled to deal with a Weslley Patati cross into the area which fell to Idan Nachmias who managed to push the ball home
But the celebrations of the central defender were short-lived as VAR spotted that Nachmias handed the ball before scoring and disallowed the goal
Six minutes later Dor Peretz flicked an Ofir Davidzada cross past Daniel Tenenbaum but this time the referee assistant raised his flag
Osher Davida almost surprised Tenenbaum in the 10th minute as he spotted the former Maccabi keeper off his line and sent a delicate chip which narrowly missed the top corner
Maccabi continued to dominate and as Peretz’s claims for a penalty were waived by referee Dekel Tzino on 13
In the 28th minute Patati curled a free kick from the edge of the area that landed on the roof of the net
A minute later Maccabi were forced to make the first change as Gabi Kanichowsky limped off and was replaced by Issouf Sissokho
Tenebaum pulled a reflex save to deny a close-range-header by Peretz following a pinpoint Joris van Overeem cross
A minute later Dor Turgeman was tripped in the box and only the intervention of VAR saw Tzino point at the spot
Turgeman stepped up and buried the penalty beyond the reach of Tenenbaum to put Maccabi in front with his 7th league goal and 11th in all competitions
A minute after the restart Maccabi were awarded a free kick after Yonatan Tepper fouled Turgeman deep inside Tiberias’ half
Patati crossed the free kick into the box where Nemanja Stojic ghosted in at the far post and had his initial header saved before pushing the rebound home to double the lead
Tiberias came close as Wahib Habiballa flicked a ball which struck the base of Roi Mishpati’s post
In the 52nd minute Tiberias cut the deficit as Bassem Za’arura was sent clear through before firing a shot that beat Mishpati and give the hosts a new lifeline
Two minutes later Maccabi’s bench made a second substitution as Eran Zahavi replaced Patati in a bid to kill the match off
Maccabi continued to press forward as Zahavi missed a ball the rolled across the face of goal on 63 before Sissokho’s effort was saved by a combination of Tenenbaum and his crossbar
Tenenbaum came to Tiberias’ rescue as he managed to push away another left foot curling effort by Davida on 81
Tiberias looked dangerous from set pieces as Metanel Tadesa headed a corner over from close range in the 83rd minute
Hisham Layous and Elad Madmon came on for Davida and Turgeman on 86 as the duo were introduced for the closing stages
Less than a minute later Layous could have sealed the victory as he raced clear through but with only Tenenbaum to beat sent his shot straight at the keeper
Inside injury time Tiberias scored a late equalizer as Maccabi struggled to clear a corner before Haroun Shapso blasted home from close range to make it 2-2
Tenenbaum saved a Layous half volley to deny Maccabi a goal and ensure the points are shared
Maccabi’s fifth draw of the season takes the point tally to 38 points
as attention now turns to Wednesday’s State Cup at against Maccabi Bnei Reineh at Bloomfield

Hezbollah rockets struck Haifa, Israel’s third-largest city, early Monday, injuring 10 people and damaging buildings, according to Israeli police. Israeli media reported that two rockets hit Haifa on the Mediterranean coast, while five others struck Tiberias, about 40 miles away.
The attack, which Hezbollah claimed targeted a military base south of Haifa using “Fadi 1” missiles, caused significant damage to buildings and properties in Haifa. Several individuals sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police confirmed.
Video footage captured by surveillance cameras showed the moment a rocket hit Haifa. Reuters independently verified the footage, using visual details and satellite imagery of the area to confirm the location, along with the timestamp corroborating the date of the attack.
In response, Israel’s military launched a series of airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Beirut and southern Lebanon. The Israeli Air Force hit Hezbollah’s Intelligence Headquarters in Beirut, including intelligence-gathering facilities, command centers, and additional infrastructure sites. Secondary explosions followed the strikes, indicating the presence of weaponry, according to the Israeli military.
Israeli airstrikes also targeted Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon and the Beqaa area, hitting weapons storage facilities, infrastructure, a command center, and a missile launcher. The IDF accused Hezbollah of embedding its command centers and weaponry beneath residential buildings in Beirut, endangering the civilian population.
A fire broke out Friday night in a Tiberias hotel, due to a blaze sparked on a floor of the building which is not currently in use due to renovations.
A man of about 40 suffered moderate injuries from smoke inhalation, and six other people suffered light injuries from smoke inhalation.
Fireman officer Yair Elkayam, commander of the Northern District Fire and Rescue Service, said, "This was a complex incident with a fire which developed quickly, and the results could have been different."
He added, "The teams' professionalism, alongside the force of the operational response, led to the incident ending as it did, with no tragic results. We gained control of the incident, and we will investigate the circumstances surrounding how the fire began."

Nachmias faced the TV cameras and said: “We were leading 2-0 against Tiberias away
We dropped two valuable points here and now must look forward and try learning from these things

the infection of a 10-year-old boy has spurred panic among Israelis who visited a beach on the Sea of Galilee
These patients had visited Gai Beach on the Sea of Galilee, with 36 released after visiting Tiberias' Baruch Padeh Medical Center. Four children are still in the hospital for further examination and observation.
No new cases have been detected yet, but the infection of the 10-year-old after a 26-year-old Israeli man died from the pathogen earlier this month. Both had entered the waters of the Sea of Galilee.
It was reported from the office that no new cases were detected.
The organism, Naegleria fowleri, can cause encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, if it enters the human body, although infections are extremely rare. Only about 400 cases have ever been recorded, but the death rate is only 3 percent.
The boy, who was at the Gai Beach water park, has been hospitalized at Ziv Medical Center in Safed after displaying symptoms.
His condition "continues to be severe," the hospital said. "He is sedated and intubated. The medical team in the children's department, continues to provide him with the best care and all of us here are praying for his recovery."
The hospital said that 19 children and five adults had arrived in the emergency room with mild symptons and were screened. All have been released.
Other medical centers in northern Israel have also reported receiving patients fearing they had contracted the Naegleria fowleri organism, but all have been released.
Doctors warn that if symptoms of meningitis appear, such as a headache with vomiting, blurred vision, and a stiff neck, to immediately seek medical care.

Syrian Druze remain divided over strengthening of ties with Israel
A delegation of some 100 Druze religious leaders from southern Syria visited Israel on Friday
marking the first time in decades that Syrian Druze were allowed to visit a holy site near the city of Tiberias in northern Israel
The delegation crossed the border near the Druze city of Majdal Shams in the Israeli Golan Heights and arrived in Julis
for a visit with the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel
the three buses carrying the delegation arrived at the shrine of Nabi Shu’ayb
the Arabic name of a prophet mentioned in the Muslim Quran and identified with the biblical Jethro

Shu’ayb is one of the most revered figures in the Druze religion
and his shrine has been among their most important pilgrimage sites since the Middle Ages
Before the establishment of the State of Israel
Druze from nearby Lebanon and Syria would take part in the pilgrimages
since 1948 these pilgrimages have largely ceased due to the governments’ opposition to Israel

the last pilgrimage to Nabi Shu’ayb by the Syrian Druze came just after the Yom Kippur War in 1976
“This is a dream that has come true before our eyes after five decades
a peak of excitement among the Druze community that we have not known since the 1980s with the mutual visits to Lebanon,” Sheikh Tarif told Ynet News
in the hope that the history that is being woven before our eyes will form a solid foundation for regional peace,” he added
Against the backdrop of intensified Israeli outreach to the Syrian Druze
the visit drew frenetic praise and large crowds among Israel’s Druze community but faced some criticism from Syria

The Druze of southern Syria are divided into two main settlement blocs: One abutting the Israeli Druze towns of the northern Golan Heights
and another in the Suweida province in an area known as “Mount Druze.”
The delegation that visited this weekend was mainly made up of sheikhs from the northern bloc, particularly from the village of Hader. Several weeks ago, a meeting of leaders in Hader purportedly declared their intention to be annexed by Israel

some leaders from the Suweida region have publicly rejected Israel's advances and declared support for the new Syrian government
which is dominated by former members of the Islamist terror group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)
is opposed to reconciliation with HTS and appears to be supportive of strengthening ties with Israel
have tried and are still trying to sabotage the connection between the Druze in Israel and Syria
but despite everything - they have not succeeded.”
Al-Hijri himself told al-Arabiya: “There is no reconciliation or agreement with the authorities in Damascus
we are in a phase of ‘be or not to be.’ We are working for our interests as a community
we will go in the direction of what is suitable for the Druze community.”
Following the rise of the Islamist HTS government, Israel decided to pledge support and defense to the Druze community in Syria
"We will not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared
In another unprecedented development, Israel plans to issue work visas to Syrian Druze workers, who could come to work in the Israeli Golan Heights.

Following two award-winning documentaries Their Algeria and Bye Bye Tiberias, Lina Soualem is attending Atlas Workshops with her first fiction project, Alicante
What are we?” These are the key questions the French-born filmmaker says have echoed throughout her two previous award winning films and is what she wants to keep exploring in Alicante
a 30-year-old Franco Algerian photographer who travels to Alicante to meet up with her parents
who have invested in a restaurant in the Spanish seaside resort
only to have to navigate the rescue of a fragile business and delicate family dynamics
“The Algerian family feels right at home in the familiar topography of the region,” says Soualem
“but Assia has no idea what she’s in for.”
Produced by Omar El Kadi and Nadia Turincev of France’s Easy Riders Films
is particiapting in Atlas Workshops in search of co-producers
The project has a proposed budget of just over €2 million and will shoot in both Spain and Paris.
Soualem was born in France and is the daughter of Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass and French-Algerian star Zinedine Soualem
She says her background directly informs her filmmaking. “As a descendant of immigrants
I try to undertake the urgent yet daunting task of addressing the questions of colonial trauma
exile and transmission through creative writing and building imaginary territories
“The film sheds light on the intricate interactions among people who love each other and are seeking their places
Soualem would like Alicante to help to reframe the Algerian experience
“Filming an Algerian family in Spain is a way to shift the representations of Algerians and Franco-Algerians
who are often locked into a stigmatised prison or seen through an opposition between France and Algeria,” she explains. “Representations of Algerians
North Africans and Arabs are often over-politicised and/or instrumentalised by the powers or counter-powers in place
“It’s a strategy of resistance to tell the stories of non-majority voices
and the public representation is constructed without us.”
who is also a TV writer and has acted in a few films
is quick to emphasise a deep seam of humour will run through the Alicante. “It will oscillate between family drama and dramatic comedy
This year marks the second time Soualem has participated in Atlas Workshops
having been through Marrakech’s industry sidebar two year ago

Hezbollah said Wednesday that it launched a first-of-its-kind attack against a military base west of the city of Tiberias in northern Israel
about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the Lebanese border
The Lebanese group said its fighters “launched an aerial attack with a number of suicide drones on the Ilaniya base.”
It said “the attack was on a part of the comprehensive monitoring and detection system of the Israeli Air Force.”
The attack “accurately hit the specified targets
achieving what the resistance intended from this limited operation.”
The attack marked the deepest inside Israel since clashes between the two sides broke out on Oct
following an attack on a military base in Nahariyya
about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the Lebanese border
The Israeli army has not commented on Hezbollah's claims
although its official radio announced earlier that dozens of rockets were launched from Lebanon toward several towns in Israel’s northern areas near the Lebanese border
Tensions have risen along Lebanon's border with Israel amid cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israeli forces as Tel Aviv presses ahead with a deadly onslaught on the Gaza Strip
which has killed more than 35,200 people since early October following a cross-border attack on Israel by the Palestinian group Hamas

Bye Bye Tiberias opens with grainy VHS footage of a woman and her child swimming in the waters of Lake Tiberias on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee
The Franco-Palestinian-Algerian director Lina Soualem narrates: “As a child
my mother took me swimming in this lake as if to bathe me in her story.”
This cinematic memoir attempts to tell that story by gathering and piecing together the memories of her family, dispersed by the Israeli occupation
The story is bookended by the lake, where they lived before the Nakba in 1948
when 700,000 Palestinians were displaced by Israel
Hiam Abbass (widely known in the West for her role as Marcia Roy in Succession) revisits the lake with her mother, Nemet
They find its shores ringed in barriers and lined with shops emblazoned with neon shop signs in Hebrew
They try to reflect in silence but are interrupted by blaring pop music and the approach of Israeli soldiers
who left the village of Deir Hanna at the age of 23 to pursue an acting career in France
as she revisits her home to care for the ailing Nemet
Soualem charts the history of Palestinian displacement through the stories of four generations of women in her family
who fled Tiberias in 1948 with her husband and eight children; her great-aunt
who found refuge in Syria following exile; and her mother
Bye Bye Tiberias attempts to weave their stories together through a patchwork of 90s home videos
poetry and present-day interviews with Abbass and her sisters
In a recurring motif throughout the film, Soualem and her mother arrange photographs on the wall of her grandmother’s flat
forming a patchy map of their family history
Camcorder footage from Soualem’s annual childhood visits to Deir Hanna often captures the four women together but continually switches focus from one woman to another - from the young Soualem engrossed in play to Um Ali meditatively plaiting her white hair
photographs and interviews with her daughter
She frequently averts her gaze from the camera
her eyes flickering into the middle distance.
Video footage of her second wedding shows Abbass staring off into space amid the beaming guests
Abbass’ yearning to escape her home - expressed in the poetry she wrote by night as a teenager
which she recites to the camera - is accompanied by a powerful desire to return to it
Soualem introduced alternative ways of depicting the past by getting Abbass to re-enact conversations with her father
her sister and a former colleague at the Palestinian National Theatre
As Soualem urges her mother to turn towards the camera
The paradox is movingly encapsulated in her description of a reunion with her aunt
Abbass’ French passport allowed her to cross the border that split the family in 1948, barring Hosnieh from returning
Abbass describes how they were drawn together “like magnets”
In one scene, she stands on the balcony, turns on the spot and points towards the sea, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan
“And here we are in the middle,” she concludes
Her sense of “in-betweenness” mirrors the condition of Palestine itself
It is the last time we see her before her death
While the Israeli occupation does not feature prominently in the film’s footage
The roar of a jet flying overhead or khaki-clad soldiers marching past Abbass on the shores of Lake Tiberias interrupts their efforts to preserve the material trace of their memories
Its violence is felt in the fractured stories of four generations of women
which Soualem lovingly tries to piece back together
Soualem notes that even her knowledge of Arabic is a “fragment” of her mother’s language
The film is an attempt to counteract that violence and to counteract Palestinian erasure by preserving and transmitting memory.
“What if the remains of this place were to disappear?” Soualem speculates as the film closes
As we witness the erasure of Gaza
where over 40,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces and more than half of its buildings razed to the ground
this question has become even more pertinent and the act of remembering a more urgent form of resistance

I haven’t had the privilege of seeing Soualem’s work before
A tender and well crafted study of motherdaughter remembrance
It gets under your skin in and stays there in the best way
Lina Soualem’s poignant new documentary traces the stories of four generations of Palestinian women in her family
in this documentary/mediation on personal and geographical history
Hiam (the beloved Marcia in TV’s Succession)
left her Palestinian village over 30 years ago to pursue her dream of becoming an actress
Soualem uses the stories of the women in her family to breathe life into the devastating history of their motherland
Blending tender interviews with her mother
camcorder footage from her childhood and archive footage of Palestine before the devastating 1948 Nakba and its aftermath
Soualem draws a fractured map that illustrates the disorienting evolution of stolen and abandoned lands
There is a persistent tension in the film between the history of those who were forcibly displaced
as they take her back to the village of Tiberias
where their family was expelled from to make way for the creation of Israel
more closely resembling a European Costa del Brit strip than a village in the middle east
The omnipresence of the Israeli military in the present-day scenes of Palestine makes Hiam’s lip curl frequently
it’s a gift to spend so much time with a face so deep in contemplation and mourning
Though the rich and compelling history of the family and the land is undeniable
the gentle pacing of the documentary is effective because Hiam is always at its centre
In conversation with her daughter and her sisters
she is game to relitigate the actions of her youth – marrying an English man
divorcing an English man – she shares teenage poetry and journal entries and endures bitter but loving jibes from her sisters (“Your mother was a real Don Juan!” they tell Soualem
“We all paid for your misdeeds” they tell Hiam)
Hiam visits her old acting school to recreate the moment she told her father that she planned to leave Palestine
“Turn slightly to the camera,” Lina instructs
The melancholy aspect of this documentary comes from its sense of patience and a willingness to sit with and actually listen to women who have kept the secrets of their scars
but melancholy is not a reason to avoid it
beyond it being a timely education on the deep familial devastation of war and displacement
The warm relationship she has with her director daughter means moments that could feel voyeuristic in another’s hands
only underscore the film’s underlying message – the necessity of matrilineal storytelling

Peniel Learning Center requests prayer that they be able to continue operating their school and kindergarten
the Peniel Learning Center (PLC) in Tiberias has served children from the local Messianic community
providing a full elementary school curriculum (grades 1 through 6) in an atmosphere that honors the Word of God
As the first and only Hebrew-speaking Messianic elementary school in northern Israel
the Learning Center has always maintained good relations and cooperated with government agencies and the local public schools
The school has an excellent reputation for producing graduates that have gone on to achieve academic success in middle school
high school and beyond – giving testimony to their faith
A local middle school principal from the public system once expressed that the PLC sends her “flowers” each year
a reference to the pupils who graduate from Peniel after sixth grade and move to her school
Despite its good standing with local authorities
in late 2020 the PLC began to face opposition from the Ministry of Education (MOE)
This resulted in the school being served a closure order in January 2021 for ‘operating without a license.’
Israel’s MOE has chosen to ignore the special arrangement that the PLC established with the Israel Trust of the Anglican Church (ITAC) three decades ago
runs the Anglican International School in Jerusalem without a license and has never received an order from the Education Ministry to obtain one
as they have existed in the land for over 200 years – before there even was a State of Israel
the PLC has been in the middle of a difficult and complex legal process of appeal which has continued to this day and they are now facing a court case with the Education Ministry government authorities
The hearing is scheduled to take place this week
As far as the Learning Center’s administration is concerned
this closure order is yet another “David and Goliath” scenario: An entire government ministry fighting against a small
private school with an average annual enrollment of 40 children total and a staff of six teachers
a ministry of the Peniel Fellowship of Tiberias is
a small school intended to serve the Messianic community in the Galilee
And it’s important to note this unique challenge because Israel doesn’t have Christian schools in every city like one would see in the United States
The early beginnings of the Peniel Learning Center are a story that deserves to be told as it is a testimony to God’s grace and how His plans cannot be thwarted
even in the face of those who would seek to tear down
a Messianic couple from Tiberias recognized the need to provide a safe haven for their 10 children who suffered injuries from violent physical assaults
as well as verbal and emotional abuse in the public school system due to their faith in Jesus (Yeshua)
the parents removed their children from the public school and began to teach them at home
resulted in numerous confrontations with Israel’s government authorities who did not agree with the decision and
the family found itself facing a lawsuit from the Ministry of Education
the judge ruled that the family could continue to educate their own children
so long as their program was placed under the supervision of an educational institution
which ultimately led to the establishment of the Peniel Learning Center in Tiberias
as the Learning Center became the first Hebrew-speaking Messianic school in Israel
The MOE questioned the student’s whereabouts
which brought the Learning Center under their scrutiny once again
This was surprising as it was not the first time a student had transferred from public school
That scrutiny led the Education Ministry to issue a closure order against the school
effectively ignoring the decision made years ago to allow the PLC to operate under the ITAC umbrella
the Peniel Learning Center has been in a legal process of appeal and taking steps to license the kindergarten independently of ITAC
chock full of government bureaucracy and plenty of red tape
received a closure order – this time for both the school and the kindergarten
The Peniel Learning Center continues the costly and time-consuming battle to keep the school and kindergarten operating
“We have now received all 30 permits that were needed to get the kindergarten up to code and are now waiting for the city engineer’s signature
All of this is just to submit the request for a license
It's been very difficult,” said the Learning Center’s principal
While the school closure order was presented as an issue of legality and licensing
a strong suspicion of prejudice against the PLC being a Messianic school
the closure order is not directly related to our faith that we know of
but it's hard to say what's going on internally in the Ministry of Education offices or what kind of discussions they're having,” a PLC staff member shared
“It’s possible they are using the licensing issue as a technicality when prejudice against the Messianic community is the main issue
we believe that if we were an Orthodox religious school
the Ministry of Education wouldn't be bothering us,” she added
we know that we don't wrestle against flesh and blood
I think that there is definitely a spiritual element – attack – here and that we’re having this trouble because we are believers,” added the staff member
Despite opposition from various directions
the desire of the parents and the Learning Center staff is to be able to continue operating the school and kindergarten
providing a safe place where the children can be taught of the Lord alongside of the required curriculum – a curriculum which complies to the regulations of the very same Ministry of Education who
The Peniel Learning Center and Peniel Fellowship are praying and trusting the Lord to fight this “David vs
Goliath” battle on their behalf and that the judge will overturn the decision to close the PLC
allowing the school and kindergarten to continue under the Israel Trust of the Anglican School for many years to come
“All your sons will be taught of the Lord; and the well-being of your sons will be great.” (Isaiah 54:13)
As the body of believers in Israel and abroad
we ask that you join the Peniel Learning Center and the members of Peniel Fellowship in prayer as they prepare

Zahir al-Umar's Omari Mosque looks like a ruin being used as a dump in the heart of the city

1918-1948.” The book is a detailed academic historical study
but I found myself reading several chapters with bated breath
The story of Tiberias is presented from a different vantage point
Abbasi tells the tale of a mixed Arab and Jewish city that could serve as a model of coexistence
He also traces the story of this city’s destruction
convincing him to travel from Izmir and settle on the banks of the Sea of Galilee
and the governor assisted him in constructing the Jewish Quarter in the heart of the Old City
This tranquil coexistence characterized Tiberias for over 200 years
headed by the Abulafia and Alhadif families
lived in good relations with the Arab residents
whose members served as qadis and muftis and held much property

the British removed the Arabs of Tiberias by bus

Tiberias had become a symbol of Arab and Jewish coexistence for hundreds of years
The warm relations ended in a grand collapse
at the height of which the Arabs of Tiberias and the Jews of the Old City were forced to leave their homes
The British moved the Arabs to Nazareth and Jordan
and the Old City’s Jews were moved to other neighborhoods
The residents of Tiberias were the first Arab urban community to be removed in its entirety
and reearch shows that this happened partly because Jewish decision-making shifted out of the city
This is how Abbasi describes this astonishing sequence of events: “Immediately after [the removal]
there began a systematic and intentional demolition of the holy Old City
[…] Such destruction was common and carried out in hundreds of Arab villages and towns
[…] The interesting part about the destruction
in addition to the loss of valuable historical
was the stubborn struggle by Jews from the Old City to receive compensation
found themselves sharing the suffering of their Arab neighbors.”

Credit: Gil EliyahuOld Tiberias was destroyed in three stages
a few buildings were destroyed in the fighting
and in January 1949 massive demolition of Old City houses began
Half the properties in the Old City were Jewish-owned
yet the authorities destroyed its ancient area almost completely
showing no regard for its holiness or history of coexistence
but part of an overall approach toward Arab villages and towns in order to prevent the return of the Arab residents
While the government made no formal decision to destroy the city
it provided the military and municipal authorities with the means to do so
and never tried to prevent the destruction
Government institutions displayed contempt toward the Jews of the Old City
who belonged to what was called “the old yishuv.” This contempt was expressed not only in the destruction of their homes
but also the confiscation of the land and the demand that they pay rent for their temporary abodes in empty Arab homes
was a city with an Eastern landscape or appearance
He says proponents of the destruction repeatedly described it in a similar way: “In its appearance and narrow alleys it was
This attitude was common to many in those days
and is particularly vivid in the description by senior Jewish National Fund figure Yosef Weitz
The Arab and Muslim ‘Eastern landscape’ was to them not only a danger to national security
it symbolized the backwardness of the East
and therefore they didn’t hesitate to destroy it

There are places in Tiberias that look slated for immediate demolition
and others where perhaps it would have been better to just not build anything
Much of what had been built simply looks bad
Abbasi is one of the most optimistic people I have ever met
He believes in peace and the brotherhood of nations
He believes in the sanctity of life and a good future
When I suggest that the city was ruined by crooks
he looks at me softly and smiles patiently
“I believe that history needs to be enlisted for compromises and not wars,” he says
“We enlisted history to exhaust and kill each other
I was born in a home that believed in the brotherhood of nations

it also discusses the Arab population of Tiberias since the renewal of the city in the early 18th century.”
In a conference held via Zoom to mark the publication of Abbasi’s book a few weeks ago
Aviva Halamish of the Open University said that historically
Tiberias’ situation was different from that of other mixed cities in the country
This was because of a number of factors: a relatively peripheral location
Jews and Arabs living side by side in the Old City
the fact that most Jewish immigrants who arrived in the city weren’t Zionist
and mostly the fact that Arabic was the dominant language in the city
and so relations between Arabs and Jews were closer and more relaxed

journalist Dalia Karpel created a fascinating documentary film
“The Diaries of Yossef Nachmani.” The film centers on the days of conquest and destruction in Tiberias through the eyes of Nachmani
the paramilitary self-defense organization active in the 1910s
and the director of the Jewish National Fund office in Tiberias
who worked a great deal with the Arab population
The film paints a captivating depiction of the change in Nachmani’s beliefs
he was a proponent of dialogue and reconciliation with the Arab population
and supported having it remain in the city
He wrote lines in his diary such as: “We are widening the abyss and arousing hate
The hotheads’ urges must be restrained.” Soon after
Nachmani avidly supported the destruction of the Old City to prevent the return of the Arabs

“I study on the micro level,” Abbasi says of his research
“From a collection of details I build a macro
and thus produce a different story than generalizations
Generalizations are the easy way to write history
The material sets the boundaries and leads me to the story
The study of Tiberias and its Arab population is an example of a case of micro-historical research of our country
"The history here [in the city] is written from the bottom up
through the daily life of the urban population in all its components
who were the overwhelming majority in the city
Without understanding the social processes and the interactions between them and the local elite
it is hard to understand the city’s history.”
