He was wanting to meet friends, while she was concerned about reports that Iran was about to launch ballistic missiles at Israel
“Suddenly someone called me and said ‘please stay home’,” she recalled in an interview. “Something terrible has happened
That evening, two men had opened fire on a busy tram in a knife and gun attack that left seven people dead, as well as the two assailants. Minutes later, Iran launched the promised missile attack
sending Kay and her family scrambling into the safe room that is built into most flats in the neighbourhood’s newer buildings for just that eventuality
Millions of Israelis across the country took to bunkers on Wednesday evening to avoid the bombardment, in which Iran launched an estimated 180 missiles – the most unleashed in a single night against Israel since the 7 October attacks by Hamas and the beginning of the war in Gaza

she had heard that the two assailants had been killed

The couple had sent Ari to a mixed daycare centre and the family was close with an Arab member of staff there
“A lot of the Jews that live in Jaffa have pride in the coexistence of the Jews and Arabs living together in the same place,” said Dror
“It’s a real shame that it happens to people who are trying to create a community life of everyone together.”
The attack there came the day before Rosh Hashanah

the day of atonement on which most Jews fast and seek forgiveness
the neighbourhood was like a ghost town,” Kay said

Across the country, there was a sense of apprehension on Wednesday as Israel vowed to retaliate against Iran for the missile strike, potentially continuing a cycle of attacks that threatens to spiral into a regional war.
The effectiveness of the Israeli air defences meant that in many cases, the targeted missile strikes were thwarted. The only person known to have been killed in the attack was a 38-year-old man from Gaza who had been staying in a Palestinian security forces compound in the West Bank near Jericho when he was killed by falling missile debris.

3 min readAn Israeli Air Force investigation into a Houthi ballistic missile that evaded Israel’s aerial defence system and hit a residential area in Jaffa overnight Friday has found that an interceptor missile malfunction caused the failure
The missile hit a playground in Tel Aviv’s Jaffa neighbourhood at 3:44 am
the interceptor failure was not related to the partial interception of another Houthi ballistic missile before dawn on Thursday
following which the missile’s warhead hit an elementary school in Ramat Gan
There were no injuries caused by the impact
which collapsed the school’s main building
The IAF probe into the Jaffa missile strike also ruled out the possibility that the Iranian-backed rebels had made changes to the missile’s trajectory and range
Israel’s Channel 12 News reported on Saturday that the Israel Defence Forces’ initial assessment suggested the missile might have employed a different type of rocket engine
investigators examined whether the Houthis had reduced the warhead size to increase fuel capacity
Arrow interceptors were launched into the upper atmosphere but missed the target outside of Israeli territory
Interceptors were then launched in the lower atmosphere
Video footage showed the failed interception attempts
residents reported not having enough time to get to protected spaces before impact
The IDF confirmed that the impact followed “unsuccessful interception attempts.”
Houthi terrorists have launched over 200 missiles and 170 drones at Israel in support of Hamas since the Gaza-based terrorist group’s Oct
The vast majority were intercepted outside of Israeli territory by Israel or the United States
IAF helicopters shot down a drone over southern Israel on Saturday that was also apparently launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels
the drone crossed the border “from the east.”

Kan reported on Saturday that Israel is planning another major attack on the Houthis
for which it is attempting to rally the U.S.-led international coalition
Jerusalem is in “close coordination” with the Americans and is urging the U.S
military to increase the level of strikes against the Houthis
forces conducted precision airstrikes against Houthi missile storage and command-and-control facilities in Sana’a on Saturday
Two US Navy pilots were shot down overnight Saturday by friendly fire during the attack according to CENTCOM
One of the pilots sustained minor injuries during the incident
Israel told the international coalition that the Houthi attacks on Israel and shipping channels in the Red Sea destabilise regional security and that therefore “there is a need to escalate both Israeli strikes and those conducted by US Central Command,” according to Kan
The Saudi channel Al-Arabiya reported on Saturday that senior Houthi officials have fled Sana’a for other regions of the country due to concern they will be targeted by Israel and the United States

Israel has officially launched its first wave energy power plant
at the southern end of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa (Yafo) municipality
uses floating platforms with hydraulic pumps to convert the up-and-down motion of ocean waves into electricity
Tel Aviv-based Eco Wave Power (EWP) developed the technology behind the plant
each producing enough electricity to power 10 homes
The system was installed in September 2023 as a joint venture with EDF Renewables Israel
a subsidiary of the French energy giant EDF
and is already connected to Israel’s national electric grid
The installation was partly funded by Israel’s Ministry of Energy
which recognizes it as a “pioneering technology.”
only after optimal performance was reached through additional modifications and calibrations over the past year
Tel Aviv-Yafo Mayor Ron Huldai described the EWP installation as “a historic milestone in the country’s renewable energy progress.”
The power plant is located at the port’s Atarim Blue Economy Innovation Hub
Atarim is the municipal company that manages the Tel-Aviv-Yafo coastline between Herzliya and Bat Yam
The Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality said the launch marked “a significant step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable energy
reinforcing Tel Aviv’s status as a global innovation leader.”
Wave energy provides a more reliable and consistent power source than solar or wind
simply because the sea is in constant motion
in part due to concerns over possible effects on marine ecosystems
The 100kW-capacity wave power plant at Jaffa Port converts wave motion into pressurized fluid
which drives turbines to generate clean electricity for coastal communities
a NASDAQ-listed company that holds 18 patents for innovative wave-energy technologies
piers and other existing marine structures
Smart controls lift the floaters out of the water during storms to prevent damage and automatically lower them again when the storm has subsided
This is EWP’s second wave power plant. The first was installed in Gibraltar in 2016, and just last month the company received the go-ahead for one at the Port of Los Angeles
Its first commercial station will be built in Porto
The Jaffa Port project is led by Inna Braverman
CEO at EWP and a graduate of the Women for Climate program that empowers women to lead environmental and sustainability projects addressing urban climate challenges
The Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality, through its Environmental and Sustainability Authority, is a member of C40
an international network of cities committed to reducing the effects of the climate crisis and greenhouse gas emissions

Two men reportedly opened fire and stabbed people on train and in nearby street before being shot dead
Six people were killed and 10 wounded in a shooting and knife attack on the Israeli seaside city of Jaffa that occurred minutes before Iran launched a huge missile attack on Israel
Five of the wounded were described as being in a serious condition
reportedly armed with an assault rifle and a knife
dressed in black emerging from a train near the light-rail stop along Jerusalem Boulevard where they opened fire on passersby as well as on a second nearby street
Video in the aftermath of the attack showed a number of bodies slumped under the awning of the station
while one image shared on social media purported to show the men executing one of wounded as they lay on the ground
the attackers shot and stabbed passengers on the Tel Aviv light rail before continuing on foot and attacking people on Jerusalem Boulevard
Two gunmen involved in the attack were killed by security forces while police hunted for a suspected third shooter
Reports suggested the two dead attackers were from Jaffa and the southern West Bank city of Hebron
Israel’s ambulance service said it received a report at 7.01pm of people injured by gunfire
Medics and paramedics provided onsite medical treatment to a number of wounded people with varying degrees of injuries
Earlier reports had suggested eight people had been killed but that was later revised to six by police
Witnesses described the shooting to the Israeli media
“We were on the light-rail when we suddenly heard gunfire from outside,” one witness told the Jerusalem Post
but then we realised it was something much worse
“I saw crowds of people running and shouting ‘terror attack’,” added a nearby shop owner
“I quickly closed my shutters and locked up.”
“I saw a terrorist shoot a girl who was on the floor and another girl
At that moment a civilian arrived with a gun and shot the terrorist.”
Another witness who was attending synagogue said that he heard shots from an automatic weapon
“Among the worshippers were medics who volunteer at the MDA [emergency response services]
We treated a man who was wounded in the synagogue and then ran to the street to help others who were wounded,” he said
The Jewish high holidays begin on Wednesday with Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish new year – and end on 11 October
Israel had already been on high alert amid the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon and rapidly growing tension with Iran
which has brought the countries to the very edge of full-scale war
Video footage in the aftermath of the attack showed one of the two gunmen lying dead in the street surrounded by security forces amid questions over whether the shooting had been coordinated in any way to coincide with the Iranian missile strikes
The shooting is the latest of a string of attacks that have occurred in Israel since October
both in the heavily populated central region and in more sparsely populated areas

2024Security sources said on Wednesday that they have no indications of any connection between the shooting attack in Jaffa the night before and a mosque near the scene of the attack
Wave energy developer Eco Wave Power’s EWP-EDF One wave energy project at Jaffa Port in Israel operated without interruption during storm-classified conditions in the last week of December 2024
delivering constant energy despite challenging weather
With wave heights averaging 1,6 meters and peak power output reaching 26 kW
the system proved capable of providing round-the-clock reliable energy
enduring stormy conditions without sustaining any damage
“We are extremely proud of the performance of our EWP-EDF One project at Jaffa Port
which demonstrated its ability to produce energy 24/7 even during stormy conditions,” said Inna Braverman
“This is a testament to the durability and reliability of our technology
which harnesses wave motion to generate electricity
maintained stable output under adverse weather conditions
The system’s performance in rough seas is said to differentiate it from other renewable energy sources
which often suffer from intermittency issues
The system’s reliability during non-ideal conditions bolsters the case for wave energy as a viable solution for sustainable power generation
Eco Wave Power is also progressing with its global expansion efforts. The company said that it is preparing for the deployment of the wave energy system at AltaSea in the Port of Los Angeles in partnership with Shell
having secured a federal license from the U.S
This project is slated to commence operations by the end of Q1 2025.
Concurrently, the company is advancing projects in Taiwan with I-KE, and in Portugal
where it plans to establish wave energy installations
In December 2024, Eco Wave Power and EDF Renewables unveiled what is said to be the Middle East’s first grid-connected wave energy power station at Jaffa Port
The installation is exporting clean electricity to the national grid under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Israeli National Electric Company (IEC)
the wave energy developer entered into a securities purchase agreement with a single institutional investor to deploy commercial-scale wave energy technology
The offering involves the sale of 300,000 American Depositary Shares (ADSs)

Moore is Michael Solomonov’s second attempt at an oyster house inspired by the Israeli city of Jaffa
creative cocktail menu and funk and soul thumping from hidden speakers
It has the sweaty energy of a place still in the first blush of its romance with the neighborhood
having none of that luxurious softness that comes only from pulling it at precisely the right second
dripping with green chiles and a smear of shabazi-spiced mayo that’s a nice complement
It isn’t as good as the green chile cheeseburgers I lived on when I was still out West
but might be one of the best I’ve had on this side of the country
A hollowness to Jaffa that is off-putting no matter how many bodies they squeeze onto the floor
maybe too bright and shiny an object for the simplicity in its design
It is all shrimp curled onto beds of cracked ice and oysters dripping schug mignonette
Instagram-ready seafood towers and composed endive salads set beside a tall amaro spritz
Forgotten by the service if you end up in the back of the room
It’s a big place with a big name behind it
and everything about it is bright and loud and shouts LOOK AT ME
But the restaurant it is wears the space like an ill-fitting suit
which is a weird thing to say about a restaurant
Michael Solomonov and his whole CookNSolo crew already have restaurants that’ll make you swoon (Laser Wolf)
They operate places that aren’t just destinations today but have been for years (Zahav)
They know how to write a menu that’ll get talked about and run a kitchen that’ll win awards
And they’ve proven they can go the other way too: cool
low-commitment (Federal Donuts & Chicken)
So the question becomes this: Was Jaffa deliberately conceived as the latter
Or is it failing as the former simply by a quirk of size — both physical and
Because if you set aside the incongruity and projection
for a Frozen Jaffa Orange or a martini or Canadian whiskey and Fernet over ice
maybe a burger if you’re making a night of it
You come with friends and camp out at a back table
act loud enough to catch a server’s attention
eat oysters and salad and some shabazi-spiced shrimp with white beans and a sting of arak
then pick at the pastrami yellowtail until you can all decide where to go next
just a place — one with a really good burger
and enough space to comfortably hold everyone who’s looking for exactly that on a Thursday night
2 Stars — Come if you’re in the neighborhood
