Race distance remains 294km with the Cipressa and Poggio climbs
This year’s Milan-San Remo will become Abbiategrasso to San Remo after race organisers were forced to move the start from central Milan to the small town that sits 25km west of the Lombardia capital
The race will still officially be known as Milan-San Remo, just as Paris-Roubaix retains its original name despite starting from Compiègne and not the French capital.
Cyclingnews understands that the start of Milan-San Remo was forced out of the city centre due to a number of reasons
including a limited number of traffic police available on Saturday March 18.
Local authorities and traffic police have apparently prioritised the Stramilano half marathon event on Sunday March 19 and are apparently unable or unwilling to provide the road closures and police needed to ensure Milan-San Remo leaves the city centre safely on Saturday morning

Matej Mohoric wins Milan-San Remo with daring Poggio descent
Mohoric: I've destroyed cycling, now everyone will use a dropper post
Abbiategrasso is part of the wider Metropolitan city of Milan and sits 25km to the west of the city centre
close to the border between the Lombardy and Piedmont regions.
Milan-San Remo is traditionally the longest monument on the calendar and RCS Sport has confirmed it will retain a similar distance.
New maps and race information provided by RCS Sport show a race distance of 294 km with the new race route rejoining the traditional Milan-San Remo route near Pavia after 30km.
The race route will again climb the Passo del Turchino before dropping down to the Mediterranean coast in Genoa
The final part of the race will include the short coastline climbs before the often decisive Cipressa and Poggio climbs in the final 30km
Matej Mohoric won Milan-San Remo in 2022
using a dropper seatpost to lower his position on his bike and so distance his rivals on the descent of the Poggio.
Plans for the return of a women's edition of Milan-San Remo have apparently been delayed until 2024
Cyclingnews will have full live coverage of the race

As climate change fuels harsher drought in Europe
farmers and those who depend on them are at risk
Italy - There is only a feeble trickle in the irrigation canal feeding farmer Alessandro Salmoiraghi's field of kiwi fruit in northern Italy."The constant problem is the lack of water," he said
is the fourth generation of his family to farm Cascina San Donato
vegetables and fruit - primarily kiwi - on a normally lush plain just an hour's drive west of Milan
If another farmer starts irrigating tomorrow
the flow could easily stop," Salmoiraghi said at his farm
climate change is fuelling more extreme weather
harsher droughts and heatwaves that can spur crop failures
That presents a threat to farmers such as Salmoiraghi and the millions who depend on Europe's agriculture for food and a living
It is also forcing Italy's government to take new steps to manage water disputes and renovate infrastructure
"The climate has changed in the last 10 years," Salmoiraghi noted
pointing to the lack of hard winters and frosty mornings
his farm is fed by the waters of Swiss Alpine glaciers that melt into the Ticino
But after poor winter rains and dismal Alpine snowfalls across northern Italy failed to replenish reserves
the arrival of spring has brought worries of more suffering following the drought of 2022
The vast valley along the banks of the River Po
stretching some 650 km from the southern Alps and Italy's northwestern border with France to the shores of the Adriatic in east
accounts for about a third of Italy's agricultural production
Last year people could walk across the river bed in places
A boat sunk in World War Two stood high and dry in the mud and gauges showed water levels below what normally counts as zero
Italy is far from alone. Agricultural production is also under strain in France and Spain and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says 3.2 billion people worldwide live in areas facing high to very high water scarcity
Attilio Fontana, president of the Lombardy region, centred on Milan, said last month that regional water storage levels were less than half what they normally are at this time of year
Coldiretti, Italy's main farmer's association, said the sector had lost some 6 billion euros ($6.6 billion) last year and predicted 300,000 businesses would lose more if the drought does not end
But experts say that would need almost non-stop rain from now until May and June
when most farmers start irrigating their fields
postponing the irrigation season," said Massimo Sertori
the councillor responsible for water resources in Lombardy
Italy grows about 50% of the rice produced in the European Union
but is set to cut output this year as farmers plant less because of the drought
Some 94% of Italy's crop is grown in Lombardy and in Piedmont
"We are especially worried about the spring crops and then vegetables and fruit," said Lorenzo Bazzana
it could hurt the whole agricultural supply chain
which supply the ham and cheese products for which Italy is world famous
Italy exported 61 billion euros ($66.6 billion) of food and agricultural products last year
But Salmoiraghi lost some 30% of his maize harvest last year and fears water scarcity will soon become the new normal
The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts rainfall in the Po valley will vary more in the coming years, with an increase in extreme weather events
Extreme drought is already affecting 6% of towns in Lombardy and Piedmont
with 19 of them experiencing the highest level of shortage
Tractors pump water from River Po to a channel as parts of Italy's longest river and largest reservoir of freshwater have dried up due to the worst drought in the last 70 years
It said some towns had already started receiving water in tanker trucks
"The situation remains utterly critical," said Alessandro Bratti
general secretary of the authority overseeing the River Po basin
In 2022, water from large lakes helped ease the drought's impact. But water in Lake Garda, which eventually flows into the River Po, is below half of normal levels
In response, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni last month set up a control room to monitor water capacity across the country and is to appoint a national commissioner to oversee the issue
The commissioner will be able to intervene in issues of water management and mediate between state bodies. Last week the cabinet approved a raft of short-term measures to simplify procedures and speed up water infrastructure works
Those who draw water illegally can now face fines of up to 50,000 euros
A new study by the Energy and Water Foundation and the company Proger said Italy receives an average rainfall of 301 billion cubic metres a year
but collects and redistributes only 11% of it
The study also found the country's 531 major dams are operating far below capacity due to technical issues and lack of investment
At the local level, the Lombardy government has asked water companies and hydroelectric operators to limit their usage
"We are seeking a point of equilibrium that allows us to fill the lakes
without hampering energy production," Sertori said
Sertori believes lakes will be key to boosting water storage
with the region undertaking renovation work to expand capacity
While waiting to see what effect the measures have
farmers are looking for their own ways to adapt
but he was also helped by the rise in commodity prices offsetting the loss in productivity
he is just thinking about reducing the possible harm
at least I lose only one harvest and not the whole season."

how to watch men's one-day classicThe 2023 World Tour classics season continues with the first Monument of the year on Saturday 18 March
The Monuments are the sport's five big one-day races with the most history, and Milan – San Remo – the most sprinter-friendly of them all – takes its usual place in March as teams gear up for the tricky cobbled classics season that follows.
This year, the peloton will ride a modified route starting from a new location south-west of Milan, although the last 264km of the nearly-300km course will follow the regular route along the Via Aurelia highway along the Ligurian coastline to San Remo.
Bahrain-Victorious rider Matej Mohoric is the defending champion.
Read on to discover this year's route, riders to watch, and how you can catch the action.

The race will take place over 294km (just under 183 miles)
and actually differs from previous years with a new starting town
This year's Monument will begin in the town of Abbiategrasso
and the opening 30km (18mi) of the race will be on flat roads before the course reaches Pavia
from where the traditional route to San Remo will be followed
The race's traditional climbs: the long
gently-sloping Passo del Turchino before the trio of Capi Mele
as well as the one-two finishing punch of the Cipressa and Poggio di Sanremo
Riders will attack the Poggio with around 9km (5.5mi) left in the race
having already covered a leg-aching 285km (177mi)
before descending into San Remo proper and the flat finish
among many former winners of the race who are expected on the start line in Abbiategrasso
However, the relative easiness of the climbs makes this race – one of the longest on the World Tour calendar – suitable for sprinters, or even the breakaway riders (should the chasing pack suffer in the wind).
Indeed, many sprinters have had joy here in the past, with Caleb Ewan – who finished second in 2021 – the most recent to make the podium.
Times indicated here are an estimate, assuming an average race speed of 44 km/h. All times Central European Time.
The 2023 Milan – San Remo will be broadcast on the GCN+ subscription service globally.
Viewers in Europe have a selection of following the races on GCN+ or on Eurosport, which is also available on the Discovery+ streaming platform.

FreshPlaza (FP): What were the initial difficulties you faced in a typically male-dominated sector such as that of agricultural mechanization?
Giulia Castoldi (GC): I think I have met the same difficulties that anyone would encounter in any company
The difficulties are usually about training and acquiring the skills needed to succeed
Working in an environment where the percentage of men is very high has not been and still isn't a problem for me
as long as you know how to do your job with passion and competence
My career in the company took several stages
I became a marketing manageress by moving from one department to another
which allowed me to fully understand the real needs of the BCS Group
This led me to believe that where there is proven experience
This is also the case of associations I belong to
in sectors that are usually considered male and where more and more women are starting to emerge
the Italian agriculture scenario is showing changes
the number of women in the primary sector is close to 29%
More and more women are employed in the Italian agricultural sector

FP: What advice would you give to women (but also to men) who want to enter sectors such as mechanization or agriculture?
It's to do your best and work hard without worrying too much about the context
because integrity and skills will always emerge
Us women have more awareness and have greater serenity than past generations
we no longer have to prove our worth to anyone
linked to your career or your private life
that is connected to the first or second question?
We have always valued passion in this company

The profile of stage 19(Image credit: RCS Sport)The route map(Image credit: RCS Sport)Stage 19: Abbiategrasso-Alpe di Mera
Three days remain and the first two are in the mountains, beginning with this stage that concludes with the first-ever Giro d'Italia finish on the fearsomely-steep Alpe di Mera.
From the start in Abbiategrasso, the opening third of stage 19 is benign, rising very gently as the plains are swapped for the early foothills of the Alps. The complexion changes at Orta San Giulia, where the riders will arrive on the fourth-category Alpe Agogna climb after organisers RCS Sport re-routed from the Mottarone following the cable car tragedy on the mountain which killed 14 people.
The peloton will then descend to the shores of Lake Maggiore, reaching the town of Stresa before turning west, passing through the first intermediate sprint at Baveno. The third-category Passo della Colma (8.7km at 5.5 per cent) arrives not too long after. The descent away from it leads into Varallo and the start of a dozen kilometres of false flat leading into the second intermediate sprint at Scopetta and, soon after, the foot of the final climb.

Riders take buses to new start in Abbiategrasso after raising concerns over 258km length on Thursday evening
the longest stage of the race set to run 258km from Morbegno to Asti
was shortened to 124km after a rider protest at the start on Friday morning
The new start was taken from Abbiategrasso
which would have been passed 134km into the original stage.
Follow the situation in real time with our live stage 19 coverage
RCS Sport had announced an additional 5km would be added to the 253km-long stage due to a bridge collapse in Candia Lomellina
prompting riders to question the logic of such a long stage.
with riders continuing to talk through the situation with CPA rider association representative Cristian Salvato
race director Mauro Vegni and UCI commissaires before the start in Morbegno.
It is understood that the riders were unhappy about the length of the stage so late in the third week of the Giro after a final week of long stages and early starts
as well long transfers before and after stages
Pouring rain and 11c at the start as the final straw for many riders
who sheltered in the VIP tent at the start area.
After talks and some kind of an agreement to cut the length of the stage
the peloton rolled out from Morbegno 10 minutes later than scheduled
eventually stopping after 8km of the route on an empty main road to wait for team buses ahead of the transfer to the new start
The move comes after riders had complained about the length of transfers earlier in the race, with Groupama-FDJ's Jacopo Guarnieri taking to Twitter after stage 16 to San Daniele del Friuli to say: "So
6 hour 30 by bike and ends with another 2 hour 30 by bus
At least you have an idea why we don't make fire and flames from km 0."
At the start of the stage in Abbiategrasso
calling the situation "a disaster" and even threatening legal action
"I have to say I'm very upset about the way this has happened," he said.
"I think there are going to be some words with lawyers here because I don't think it has been a respectful way to the race
and I think there has been no real respect shown to everyone involved on the rest of the stage
"We think that there will be consequences because of the behaviour of the riders today
I don't think there really are excuses for them not to do it today
Whoever brought these proposals needs to show proof it was discussed last night otherwise I will get lawyers involved."
The concerns over stage 19 are far from the first rider welfare complaint at the 2020 Giro.
Earlier in the race, riders complained about the state of the race's anti-COVID-19 'bubble'
with Jumbo-Visma's Jos Van Emden noting that neutral service
police and the general public were mixing with multiple teams in race hotels
Stage 4 was marred by a crash at the finish after a RAI television helicopter blew barriers into the road
taking out Vini Zabù-Brado-KTM riders Etienne Van Empel and Luca Wackermann
with the latter forced out of the race as a result
The race will restart from Abbiategrasso (MI), keeping active all the intermediate sprints from there on.La corsa ripartirà da Abbiategrasso (MI), mantenendo attivi tutti i traguardi volanti da lì in poi.#Giro pic.twitter.com/0F3JYp3UZROctober 23, 2020

"Following the tragic events of last Sunday that involved the Mottarone Cableway - and in agreement with the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport
the Piedmont Region and all the other institutions concerned
have decided to modify the route of stage 19 of the Corsa Rosa," RCS Sport wrote in a statement released on Tuesday
The race observed a minute of silence before Monday's stage 16 to honour the 14 victims of the cable car crash
with riders starting in Abbiategrasso before travelling northward toward Lago Maggiore
but then bypassing the category 1 Mottarone
The race will instead travel over the category 4 climb to Gignese (83km) before descending down to Stresa
The peloton will then follow the original route with an intermediate sprint in Baveno (107km)
a climb over the Passo della Colma (127.4km)
another intermediate sprint at Scopetta (151.5km) before finishing at the summit of Alpe di Mera (166km)
The route was originally designed to climb over the Mottarone
before dropping down into Gignese and then into Stresa along the shores of Lago Maggiore
The area is home to a popular cable car that takes tourist passengers from the resort town of Stresa to the top of the Mottarone mountain.
The cable car crash happened about 12:30 p.m
Local reports suggest the cable may have failed about 300m (984ft) from the top of the mountain
with the cabin falling 20 metres into the forested area below
An investigation has been opened into the crash with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi describing it as a "tragic accident"
"I express the condolences of the whole government to the families of the victims
with a special thought for the seriously injured children and their families," he said in a statement

Simon Yates went solo to win stage 19 of the Giro d'Italia but Egan Bernal increased his overall lead with two days to go
Yates showed he is still very much up for the fight in the battle for the maglia rosa on Friday
Englishman Yates went on his own six-and-a-half kilometres from the end of the lung-busting 166 km ride from Abbiategrasso and had more than enough in the legs to pull away
The Team BikeExchange rider moved two minutes and 49 seconds adrift of Bernal
who crossed the line in third place behind Joao Almeida
Bernal edged his advantage over second-placed Damiano Caruso in the general classification up to two minutes and 29 seconds
but Yates made another statement ahead of a brutal penultimate stage in the mountains on Saturday
The Colombian initially reacted well when Yates surged away on a steep final ascent to the finish
leaves the race nicely poised ahead of such a tough stage 20 at high altitude and a time trial to finish on Sunday
INEOS Grenadiers rider Bernal was left to fend for himself with 2.4km to go as Daniel Martinez was unable to stay with him and had to dig in two days after Yates also made time on him in the mountains
The team did a great job right from the start of the stage
a fantastic team effort and I'm happy to have finished it off

I'm not sure where I am now in the general classification but I'm really happy about this win."

The couple's 24-year-old son found the lifeless bodies of the two spouses in the bed
Vita Di Bono and Luigi Buccino (47 and 54 years old)
light years away from the abyss that opened at dawn on Sunday
November 5th in their apartment at number 50 of via Piave in Corbetta where Vita killed her husband and then killed herself
according to what has been reconstructed so far by the carabinieri (italian police)
would have grabbed a knife and stabbed her partner in the back who was still sleeping under the covers and then slit his throat
investigators and prosecutors want to understand if the woman had taken medicines or psychotropic drugs
On social media Vita and Luigi seemed like a model family
he was a bricklayer who came to the hinterland from Calabria
They posted photos of them smiling at the sea; they posted happy shots of birthdays and anniversaries with their grown-up children
Distant memories because the daily serenity was cracked and perhaps their relationship had come to an end
the woman had had some psychological problems in recent months and had received treatment at the Magenta hospital
some neighbors told investigators about frequent arguments
it seems that there are neither previous complaints nor old interventions by the police
A few months ago the woman had tried to kill herself
The macabre discovery took place in the afternoon of Sunday
The 24-year-old son could not get in touch with his parents and so he rushed to their home
The call to 112 was triggered but the health workers could only ascertain the death
The carabinieri of the Abbiategrasso company
the investigative unit and the scientific unit then intervened on the spot
The investigations quickly took a very precise direction: no external track
but a family tragedy matured within the walls of the house
