provide a new insight to understanding the relationship between tectonics and spatial-temporal evolution of volcanism
a structural high pertaining to the Hyblean foreland domain
is speckled by volcanics and strongly affected by strike-slip tectonics
Transpressive deformation produced a push-up and a remarkable shortening along WNW-ESE to NW-SE trending lineaments
show evidence of positive tectonic inversion
Transtensive tectonics favoured the emplacement of deep magmatic intrusive bodies and Plio-Quaternary scattered volcanics through releasing zones
The continuing of wrench tectonics along different shear zones led to the migration of transtensive regions in the Etna area and the positive inversion of the former ones
This process caused the shifting of volcanism firstly along the main WNW-ESE trending “Southern Etna Shear Zone”
then towards the Valle del Bove and finally up to the present-day stratovolcano
Italy) provides one of the most intricate and studied examples of volcanism
its origin and spatial-temporal evolution are still the object of debate
Etna basaltic volcanism takes place in an atypical setting
on the front of the African vs European plates’ collisional belt and on the continental foreland crustal block
bounding to the west the subsiding Ionian plate
1 was created using the “CorelDraw X5” software)
Our findings also provide a striking advance in the wider understanding of tectono-magmatic interaction
giving a useful comparison for other volcanic regions worldwide
currently exposed around Aci Trezza (Aci Trezza Synthem
542 ± 86–496 ± 87 ka) and in the southwestern slope
roughly NW-SE oriented maximum horizontal stress axis
as a consequence of the plates’ convergence
The latter is characterized by a sinuous trend
which is different from the straight and narrow-spaced canyons affecting the continental margin to the south
Reduced-to-the-pole (a) and tilt-derivative (b) magnetic anomaly maps of Timpe Plateau and surrounding offshore areas
Traces of seismic lines shown in this paper are reported
The prominent WNW-ESE trending positive anomaly extends offshore of Aci Trezza
suggesting a deep-seated magmatic intrusion
The presence of diffuse and scattered volcanics is highlighted by the discontinuous pattern of positive magnetic anomalies
Uninterpreted (a) and interpreted (b) T_05 seismic reflection line (running perpendicularly to the L_01 and L_02 lines), which images the northern portion of Timpe Plateau (see Fig. 1 for location). Plio-Quaternary volcanic bodies (orange areas), isolating small-scale basins, and magmatic intrusions (orange arrows) were detected.
Uninterpreted (a) and interpreted (b) 21Sud seismic reflection line, cutting through the slope of Timpe Plateau and the Catania Plain offshore (see Fig. 1 for location)
rooted by the same Plio-Quaternary substratum characterizing the Timpe Plateau and filled by a thick sedimentary package with intercalated volcanics (orange areas)
The push-up affects also the southeastern slope of Timpe Plateau
7 was created using the “CorelDraw X5” software)
where it likely controls the sinuous path of Catania Canyon
Shallow sedimentary packages are locally affected by gravitational instability, highlighted by landslide scars (e.g. the 1.2 km wide and up to 0.7 s deep scar, Fig. 4) and associated deposits (Fig. 7)
Overall, it is remarkable that the tectonic pattern defined on the seismic profiles corresponds so well with the distribution of magnetic anomalies (Figs 2 and 7)
Forward magnetic and gravity modelling along the T_05 and 21Sud seismic reflection lines (Figs 5 and 6)
and misfit (average error) curves for magnetic (a) and gravity (b) modelling
derived from time-migrated seismic sections
The areal distribution and size of Plio-Quaternary volcanics are well constrained
allowed us to characterize in detail the crustal structure offshore of the southeastern slope of Mt
which represents a pivotal area to understand the spatial and temporal evolution of volcanism in this region
suggest an older or almost coeval age with the first phases of Etna volcanism ( > 120 ka)
seaward gravitational sliding of the Etna eastern flank superimposes on the pre-existing morpho-structural setting of the substratum
even though is also triggered by magmatic intrusions
Some of the afore-mentioned faults have produced important earthquakes, including recent ones (e.g. the Mw 4.9, 26/12/2018 event along the dextral transtensive Fiandaca fault; http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/event/21285011/?tab = MeccanismoFocale#TDMTinfo)
migration of releasing and restraining regions along the “Southern Etna Shear Zone” favoured new fissure-type volcanism and hampered the former one
with positive tectonic inversion affecting the previous releasing zones (e.g
releasing zones migrated northwards along the NW-SE trending “Central Etna Shear Zone”
of which the offshore expression results in AL
favouring volcanism along the Acireale coast up to Moscarello and Mt
This second shear zone may represent a splay fault of ATL or a step-over belt between the “Southern Etna Shear Zone” and an analogous dextral sub-parallel structure to the north (a possible “Northern Etna Shear Zone”)
Volcanism along the “Southern Etna Shear Zone” ceased (c); a further migration of releasing and restraining zones produced a new shifting of volcanism firstly to the present-day Valle del Bove area (c) and then to the Mt
the lack of comparable information on the northern sector of Mt
Etna and related offshore areas does not allow us to assert whether this second shear zone is a splay fault of ATL
or a step-over belt between the “Southern Etna Shear Zone” and an analogous dextral sub-parallel structure to the north (a possible “Northern Etna Shear Zone”)
which were the sites of a roughly 320 ka and 130 ka old volcanism
The proposed reconstruction provides a useful key to understanding the temporal and spatial spreading of the eruptive centres of Mt
the largest and most active volcano in Europe
The model also sheds new light on the nature of the tectonic deformation heavily affecting the southeastern coastal sector of the volcano
Our findings also advance the wider understanding of the interaction between tectonics and volcanism
providing a useful key to explain volcanism in analogous contexts worldwide
Gravity data were acquired during the same TOMO-ETNA experiment using an Air/Sea Micro-g LaCoste dynamic gravity meter
Raw gravity data were sampled at 1 Hz interval
smoothed using a low-pass (120 s) filter and corrected for cross-coupling errors and the Eotvos effect
Relative gravity readings were tied to an absolute gravity station located at Syracuse harbour
Instrumental drift was also estimated and subtracted from the gravity data by using a linear trend
Latitude correction was applied to obtain the free air anomaly field
which provided the starting benchmark for the subsequent adjustments
Adding the information from the seismic stratigraphy
better constraining the modelling approach
Seismic profiles show an overall good quality
with an estimated vertical resolution of 2–3 m in the shallower sedimentary succession
while most of the energy is hardly able to penetrate a high-impedance substratum
identified down to about 3 s two-way travel time
To image the shallower portions of the study area with higher resolution, particularly to identify fault-induced displacements, volcanic and slump deposits at the seafloor or beneath few tens of meters of soft sediments, a dense grid of sparker profiles were interpreted (Fig. 1)
All processed data were imported into the “Kingdom” software by HIS-Markit for interpretation

joining forces and resources are the pillars of the Sicilian business network called Etna's
These basic notions embody the idea of doing business to achieve goals that can hardly be obtained alone
the network includes member companies with 150 hectares of land and an estimated production of about 5,000 tons of lemons per year
in a large plant where citrus fruits are sorted and packaged
The PGI Etna Lemon is a fine citrus fruit which in 2020 obtained its inscription in the register of protected geographical indications by the European Union
"We represent a group of growers that produce this lemon
united in a business network that aims to share experience and good practices that add value to agricultural production
We believe that in order to grow and increase competitiveness on the markets
we need to focus on the supply and overcome the fragmentation of our production system
Being united in purpose will allow us to gain critical mass
optimize resources and shorten the supply chain
to be reliable towards our trading partners," said PGI Etna Lemon producer members of the Etna's business network
The Etna lemon is grown in a fairly wide area that covers Acireale
the producers have developed a special technique that consists of causing water stress to the trees by depriving them of hydration during the months of June/July
through copious irrigation and nitrogen-based fertilization
the trees resume vegetative activity and bloom in August
Etna's Network is currently engaged in harvesting and commercializing the Verdello lemon (also called summer lemon)
the production of which is exclusive to the Ionian-Etnean area of Sicily
Thanks to the cultivation technique on volcanic soil described above
there is constant production of this characteristic lemon
which turns out to be the only cultivation in summer
This is a lemon whose distinctive trait is an external coloration of the fruit tending to green
very juicy and with edible peel since it is free of pesticide residues
cultivated on an area that covers about 3,000 total hectares
an alternative to lemons arriving on the markets from Argentina or South Africa during the same period
The superior nutraceutical qualities that characterize this specific seasonal lemon have been extensively described in the scientific research carried out by CREA-OFA of Acireale (CT), "Qualitative and Nutraceutical Aspects of Lemon Fruits Grown on the Mountainsides of Mount Etna" published in Food Research International no.74, April 2015 Elsevier B.V. (See research paper)
"The Protected Geographical Indication of the Etna Lemon (See related article) is an extremely important trademark because
in addition to certifying its exact geographical origin
it enhances its typical and unique organoleptic and cultivation characteristics
These characteristics are made possible thanks to the extremely favorable microclimatic conditions that
in synergistic action with the particular nutritional characteristics present in the soil of volcanic origin
the Etna's network is engaged in the cultivation phases that
with the appropriate agronomic interventions
will lead to the harvest campaign of the Primofiore lemon
The network is made up of companies with a long tradition
specializing in citrus cultivation and who have decided to join forces in order to be able to offer the consumer a product available on the market with a wide commercial calendar
The goals are to strengthen cooperation among members
enhancing the processing and marketing network of the fresh supply chain
while not to mention the potential opportunities provided by the companies in the processing industry

Catania's Greek phase is the subject of the permanent exhibition "Katàne tra mito e rito"
The exhibition is housed in the former Manifattura Tabacchi
Katanè is a precious example of industrial archaeology in the heart of the city's historic centre
The ancient theatre of Catania is located on the extreme southern slopes of the hill of Montevergine
The area shows evidence of frequentation from prehistoric times
It also preserves traces of the theatre building from the Greek period
probably connected to the sanctuary of Demeter and Kore in Via Crociferi
The current structure dates back to Roman times and has several construction phases
the first dating back to the first century AD
the theatre took on larger and more magnificent proportions thanks to the construction of a monumental entrance
A larger cavea and a more articulated and richly decorated stage building were built
From the same period theOdeonIt was used instead for poetic and musical competitions
Further modified in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD
it was then abandoned and gradually covered by buildings

Visconti recovered from Tour of Qatar tumble
Visconti considers himself winner of Giro d'Italia stage 17
Cunego quietly confident for the Tour de France
“Lampre will be the strongest team at the race,” Visconti told Gazzetta dello Sport
“Ulissi is going very well and so is Cunego
so there are a lot of factors that could have an impact on it.”
Visconti took a break from racing after the Giro d’Italia
but returned to action at the Tour de Slovenie last week in order to get in some racing miles ahead of the Saturday’s race in Sicily
which is set to see riders who have previously served doping suspensions excluded from participating
Visconti shared a fractious finale to stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia with Ulissi in May
Although Visconti was first across the line in Tirano
he was relegated to third place after pushing the young Tuscan in the final sprint
The pair are currently at an Italian national team training camp in Sicily
and Visconti insisted that they had put the matter behind them
“I travelled here to Sicily with Ulissi and we could even be friends now,” he joked
While Ulissi’s name has been inscribed in the record books as the stage victor
Visconti admitted that he still considers himself to be the winner
“I’ve won two races this season and half a stage at the Giro d’Italia,” he said
so for me it’s been a fine season.”
Visconti has finished in the top three on no fewer than twelve occasions to date this season
and although he has tasted victory just twice in 2011
a stage win at the Giro would have changed my season
but I’m still happy to have finished on the podium so often,” Visconti said
“It’s indicative of my consistency
I think I’m one of the few riders who is always at the front from February to October
and there are some wins in there too.”

Wildfires have caused devastation in many parts of southern Europe this July
While 2023 so far has not been among the worst years for wildfires in Italy
the tail-end of a prolonged heatwave has now brought arid conditions and high winds to the south of the country that have made it easy for blazes to spread
Italy's fire brigade said on Wednesday it had attended almost 2,000 callouts for fires between July 23-26th: 710 in Sicily
READ ALSO: Sicily set for state of emergency as wildfires blaze
A state of emergency is expected to be declared in Sicily after raging wildfires surrounded the city of Palermo
leaving three people dead and hundreds forced to evacuate
Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino airport was closed on Tuesday morning after fast-spreading wildfires reached the perimeter
and surrounding roads and railways were also closed
Firefighters continued to battle blazes raging nearby including on the Capo Gallo mountain above the seaside resort of Mondello
In the Catania area too major fires were reported
All of Sicily has been on alert for wildfires over the past week, and arsonists were blamed for starting several destructive fires as temperatures on the island exceeded 47 degrees Celsius on Tuesday
the situation has also been critical for several days and around 80 active wildfires were still burning on Wednesday
The worst-hit area was Reggio Calabria
where a 98-year-old man died after flames engulfed his home
There were also evacuations in the provinces of Crotone and Catanzaro
