Low-profile Greek shipowners have emerged as active buyers in the secondhand dry bulk market
primarily opting for modern and middle-aged tonnage
One such example is Attica-based Adelfia Navigation
The Greek shipping company has emerged as the new owner of CMB Permeke
Equasis lists Adelfia Navigation as owning four bulk carriers
with the latest addition being the youngest in its fleet
a five-year-old Kamsarmax vessel is currently valued at around US$32.5M
a 6% decrease from the same period last year
Allied Shipbroking reports the value of five-year-old Panamax vessels has corrected by approximately 16% over the past six months
Seaspire Maritime appears to be the new owner of Unity North
Shipbroking firms initially reported the deal earlier this year
estimating the price at around US$16.0-16.5M
Seaspire has shown a preference for Japanese-built tonnage
as all its vessels were constructed in Japanese shipyards
Load Line Marine has been linked to the acquisition of two 2012-built vessels
with a combined estimated cost of nearly US$20.0M
These acquisitions will expand Load Line Marine’s fleet to 19 bulk carriers
the Greek owner has remained very active in the sale and purchase market
completing six acquisition deals in 2024 alone
Handysize values have decreased by 4% to 17% across all age groups over the past six months
According to Petrofin Research
a Greece-based firm specialising in Greek shipping data
83 owners controlled a combined fleet of 3,617 vessels totaling 376.6M dwt
which represents 79% of the Greek-owned fleet
the number of Greek shipping entities with fleets of 25 or more vessels increased to 57
These companies now control 67% of the Greek-owned fleet
the number of owners with fleets of 16-24 vessels rose to 40
marking a 11% year-on-year increase in deadweight tonnage
Their market share currently stands at 11%
the number of smaller and mid-sized owners has decreased
There are now 302 companies controlling 1-4 vessels
These smaller owners now account for just 5% of the total fleet

For one day in February 1964, the inside of St. Mark’s Social Center in Roxbury resembled something unheard of in Boston at the time — a fully integrated classroom. Black and white students sat side-by-side, shoulders colliding and knees brushing
The lessons of the day offered what didn’t make their public school textbooks: African American history
from the fight against segregation to cultural giants like Louis Armstrong
when about 3,000 students attended the so-called Freedom Schools
The Freedom Schools did not last long: only two days across the two years. But their legacy lives on in the idea that, if Black children are going to get the schooling they deserve
it might have to be in schools created and sustained by Black Bostonians
It was an independence movement born of necessity
one that predated and would outlast the landmark busing order of 1974
In the ‘60s and ‘70s, as Black Bostonians fought a civil rights battle for better education and as neighborhoods reeled from Judge W. Arthur Garrity Jr.’s decision to integrate Boston’s public schools, the Roxbury Community School
and the New School for Children opened as alternatives for Black students failed by BPS
Each institution was formed by residents — most often Black women — who had decided to take their children’s education into their own hands
white flight,” said former acting mayor Kim Janey
who attended the New School for Children in Roxbury during the early ‘70s
“But the story is the Black mothers and aunties and grandmothers who decided self-determination was the way to go
that we are going to create our own schools and educate our own kids.”
The state Board of Education said that it was required to close the school under the state racial balance plan
(Bill Curtis/Globe Staff)The pursuit of educational self-determination for Black families has a long history here
Boston saw institutions such as Otto and Muriel Snowden’s Freedom House
and several other community-run programs in Boston’s Black neighborhoods
Among the teachers recruited to instruct New School’s pupils was Gloria Bourne Lee
led more than a dozen students through writing
Curriculum builders infused lessons with Black leaders and historical figures
Bourne Lee said she never designed her lessons with the intention of emphasizing Black pride or Black history. “It’s just who I was,” she said
Janey attended school there 50 years ago — for kindergarten and first grade — so she doesn’t remember many details
But the feelings she experienced at the New School never left her
“I’ve never felt as safe as I did then,” Janey recalled
Wanting their son to have a similar educational experience
Sister Angela and Brother Joe Cook transformed their theater company into Paige Academy
the young couple would walk to closing BPS schools in the neighborhood and bring the left-behind desks
Paige Academy has grown from a makeshift classroom of hand-me-down desks and supplies to a self-sufficient community school
Families can enroll by paying tuition or enrolling for free through the city’s universal pre-K program
about 100 children up to sixth grade are provided year-round programming
Almost all of the students are kids of color
and most of the teachers are people of color
many of whom attended the academy themselves
The school’s curriculum focuses on the seven principles of Kwanzaa
“We really just spent time observing the kids and seeing what they needed
and then try to provide it to them,” Angela Cook said
more than a dozen students closed their eyes
connected their thumbs and middle fingers as their teacher led them in meditation
Joe Cook helped one student operate a small robot with a tablet
a circle of toddlers engaged in a musical math lesson
counting out each slam of their tiny hands against a cacophonous symphony of Djembe drums
whose preschooler Jaxon attends Paige Academy
said she has seen a difference in his early education compared with her three older children
who attended public schools in New York and Boston
“People feel more comfortable when their environment is more cultural,” Williams said
such as Roxbury Roots Montessori school that opened in 2021
have also been shaped by the desire for more culturally sensitive learning
Roxbury Roots is small: only 24 students between ages 3 and 6
Its founder Renee Jolley follows the example set by local educators such as Mae Arlene Gadpaille of Roxbury
who in the ‘60s opened the small Montessori Family Center to educate neighborhood teens
and made it her life mission to open a site that met the basic necessities for entire families
ranging from employment to groceries to housing
Roxbury Roots emphasizes Montessori education principles — independence
And Jolley’s creation doesn’t look like a traditional school
Despite the work these schools have done over the years
their creators agree that they find themselves in a sort of inescapable time loop
fighting against the same educational injustices their predecessors sought to erase
students painted together at the Roxbury Community School in 1966
Roxbury Community School dietician and chief cook
gave a group of students a cooking demonstration in 1969
the schools hardly make a dent in local educational inequality
They don’t have the tax dollars of public schools to spend or the steep tuitions from which more affluent
such as the Epiphany School in Dorchester’s Shawmut neighborhood
the school relies primarily on donors and foundations for funding
It is also affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts
Epiphany School provides full scholarships for its middle schoolers
all of whom are enrolled through either referral or a lottery process and are at or below the federal poverty level
Some of the school’s 65 staff live at school-owned housing free-of-charge
but recognizes the massive potential of her community: “We are really somebody
We have the ability but we are not taught well enough to go to a good educated school.” (Charles Glenn papers at Northeastern University Archives and Special Collections)
because hardly anyone leaves and creating one would give a “false hope” for interested families
“I don’t think every school has to be the same as us at all,” said Finley
“But I do think that Epiphany is a good example of what we could hope for for every child.”
about 20 sixth-graders were seated at their desks
A Black male teacher led them through a lesson on prose
A plush sectional and synthetic succulents offered a safe space away from the stresses of classroom learning
The school serves as a space where the needs of Black children are met
will not be the most important people in their new school
The school won’t be set up just for them,” Finley said

Most genealogists are familiar with the term “brick wall.” We use it to describe a situation where we think we have tried every possibility to find some piece of information but have come up empty
the information exists but it’s not on the internet
You might have to go to some courthouse in South Carolina
to get a copy or an extract of somebody’s birth record
the information is on the internet but you have to either pay a subscription fee
or go to a public library or FamilySearch center to use their web access to get the information you need
Sometimes you know the birth date and the town and when you go to the FamilySearch film/folder for that town and that year
April births are there and so are May birth and June
Sometimes you have a death certificate in Italy that says the town the person was born in
and when you check the births of that town
every known document is vague about someone’s birthplace
all just say “Italy” and there seems to be no other document to look for that might have the town listed
Once you are working with Italian civil records
It gives us a false sense of security regarding the stateside availability of information
So let’s go through these various brick wall scenarios and see what you can try
but if you haven’t been through most if not all of these six

Greek owner sells three youngest vessels, with BW Dry Cargo taking one of them
Greece’s Adelfia Shipping is denying reports that it is selling half of its fleet under order from Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) or other lenders.
The company acknowledges it has been marketing some of its vessels for sale. However, It insists this is part of a reorganisation under its own authorship.
“We wish to set the record straight and declare that certain vessels have been marketed for sale, in accordance with [an] Adelfia Shipping Group of Companies’ reorganisation programme,” the company told TradeWinds.

Halfway between a festival dedicated to table grapes
a cornerstone of the region’s inland economy
and a business meeting attracting buyers from around the world
Regina di Puglia has garnered interest from municipalities where table grape production thrives
This has led to the creation of the Terre dell’Uva network
The initiative aims to enhance the value of table grapes and their territories
The third edition of Regina di Puglia will be the first to involve the municipalities of Terre dell’Uva
The organisers said the expansion is expected to further engage not only grape producers but also local communities
which will have the opportunity to promote themselves thanks to the presence of both Italian and international journalists and influencers attending the event
“Organisational efforts are already in full swing
aiming to make Regina di Puglia – following its success in 2023 and reaffirmation in 2024 – an even larger event where agriculture and tourism share a common language geared towards development,” the organiser said
The programme will once again include cultural events
and tastings of the region’s renowned food and wine specialities
and business meetings between Apulian companies and major national retailers as well as foreign importers
Table grapes are a true treasure of the Apulian region
second only to tourism in terms of economic impact
the leading producer of table grapes in both Italy and Europe
and one of the most significant production hubs worldwide
Traditional grape varieties are now complemented by the best selections demanded by the international market
mayor of Noicàttaro commented: “We hope that this third edition of Regina di Puglia
will mark a significant step in strengthening the synergy between the municipalities of the Terre dell’Uva network
“This initiative was created to systematise the various characteristics of these territories with a view to development
Alongside my colleagues from the other municipalities
we have also agreed that the network should become a key representative for industry professionals
gaining greater influence in institutional dialogues to benefit the economy and the distinctive qualities of our seven municipalities.”
