The Cala Bianca (Marina di Camerota) was once designated Italy’s most beautiful beach and for good reason—it is tucked in a cliff-protected cove with an aqua-green sea

a squad comprised of mostly Staten Island players
captured the 38th annual Agropoli Cup's U-14 division last month
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Charlie De Biase Jr. | debiase@siadvance.comAn under-14 boys’ soccer team comprised of mostly Staten Island players took their talents to Salerno
Italy recently and wound up capturing the 38th annual Agropoli International Cup by going undefeated during tournament play last month
The 15-player roster consisted of 14 Island residents that competed for Team USA
The countries represented in Team USA’s bracket included Colombia
the tournament participation of Team USA was made possible by the directors of New York International Football Club (NYIFC) and Staten Island residents Arturo Radano and Armando Guarnera
The latter two have been responsible for taking teams to the Agropoli Cup for over 10 years
"Having the opportunity to live and play in Italy myself
I wanted to be able to provide my players with this unique and rewarding experience before they head to high school next season,'' explained coach Russo
Guarnera approached me with this idea via my friend/assistant coach
I was immediately intrigued with the prospect of playing in an international tournament.”
Team USA competed in three friendly matches before taking part in the four-game tourney
After winning their first two friendly matches
Team USA took on an a U-15 squad from England
Although they dropped a 2-1 decision to the older squad
coach Russo believes the game served as a springboard to their success in the Agropoli Cup
Team USA defeated Rome 5-0 before upending Frosinone
Those victories enabled the Island team to earn the top seed for the championship match at Agropoli Stadium on April 20
Although they fell behind 1-0 to Malmantile (Florence
Team USA roared back with two second-half goals
including the game-tying tally by Ari Klayman
Team USA then capped its comeback when Rinor Okshe converted a Liam McGovern feed into a goal with just 30 seconds to play
"I am incredibly proud of the way the players conducted themselves on and off the field; the boys represented Staten Island soccer to the fullest and received many compliments from foreign coaches
and tournament officials on the high level of play displayed by the team,'' added Russo
"The support from family members was fantastic as many made the trip accompanying the team to Italy and it was certainly helpful in the final.''
The tournament MVPs included Okshe and Richie Kliesch
both of which will attend Monsignor Farrell in the fall
Russo said goalkeeper Aidan Dertinger played exceptionally well while captain Ryan Friar anchored the defense
Midfielders Fernando Diaz and Aiden Sivio also turned in strong performances
The roster included Island residents Zackary Bentsianov
off-Island resident Giorgio Sansone was on the team
“The group went to Italy as a strong team and came back home Champions,'' claimed Russo

South of the Amalfi Coast is a rugged wonderland of quiet paths through chestnut woods and vineyards
It’s all perfect for contemplating ancient yarns
rays of sunlight ignite the patches of pink cyclamen and crocus
There are fungi of various kinds dotted around
including one that is a perfect sphere of bright orange pushing its way up out of earth
I sit on a rock and after a while I hear a gentle grunting noise
the sort of contented chunter made by a snorer having a light snooze
so close I can see the dust on their backs
but wily Old Ma spots the movement and they take off at a blistering pace
narrowly surviving temptation by the dreaded Sirens at an island
just hidden from my view by the curve of the coastline
I can see as far as the distant ragged peninsula of Amalfi on the northern horizon but there are no ships in sight
Finding solitude in Italy is not always so simple
The population density is lower than Britain or Germany
but its 59 million residents are host to about the same number of tourists each year
most heading for some of the world’s most desirable honeypots
drawn in by the siren voices of social media
one entrepreneur is asking for €500 (£415) a day for the best beach location and umbrella
I had started out a couple of days earlier at the pretty seaside town of Agropoli where old men were playing cards over their breakfast coffee on the beachfront
I stepped into the local supermarket expecting to find fast-food snacks in garish packaging
I found myself in a delightful family-run delicatessen serving a range of local produce from artichokes to courgettes
The path I am following curls southwards through what is Cilento national park, one of the largest in the country, covering a long stretch of craggy coastline, a mountainous interior and hundreds of small villages. It’s a fairly easy route to follow – I’m guided by travel firm On Foot’s well-designed map app – and almost deserted as a path
plus one German couple and a solitary Canadian
At San Giovanni vineyard
I stop to sample the wine and get a plate of delicious local pancetta and cheeses
I’m told: “We just know them by the name of the farm they come from.” The wine is organic and very good although production last year was low
The only sound in the woods is the cackle of jays. At one stream a grass snake slithers awayNext morning I refuse the offer of a lift back to the coast (the views are too good) which the path follows all the way to a point overlooking Licosa. The are no Sirens to be seen or heard, no sea-roving Greeks, either, in fact no one at all.
I now leave the coast – not to return for a few days – and head up into the forest, passing a lovely avenue of ancient carobs, then climbing to a pair of 13th-century lookout towers. My final destination is Rocca Cilento, another mountaintop village with castle, this time in the guesthouse of Paolo and Concetta, who prove to be great informants on the history of the place – Paolo having grown up in the same house.
“There used to be a lot of people in the village,” he says. “Maybe 1,000 all year round. Chestnuts were the big thing. We’d grind them up in the water mills to make flour. And we kept pigs to make prosciutto.” He tries to keep up tradition, making his own wine and growing most of the vegetables, but the population has plummeted to below 100.

This area has suffered from bouts of emigration
starting in the 19th century when people left for America and most recently in the 1950s when cities such as Milan and Naples lured them away
The only sound in the woods is the cackle of jays
When I climb up into the chestnut woods, I start to meet locals. There are two men riding mules up to where they are coppicing a grove of sweet chestnut trees
I watch as they hitch up the felled trees and the mules haul them away
running after the animals when they escape
Acciaroli was Ernest Hemingway’s favourite Italian resort and it’s easy to see whyI go over Monte Stella and down to an agriturismo
a farm that has a tourist element (the official rule is at least half the income should be agriculture)
I sit down for a coffee and bump into the local mayor
“The problem here is that we get a massive influx of visitors in August
I’m trying to carry on the work of Angelo and make people realise that Cilento is wonderful all year round.”
View image in fullscreenKevin Rushby walked down to the beautiful seaside village of Acciaroli from Pollica
Photograph: Giulio Ercolani/AlamyAngelo Vassallo was his predecessor
It’s thought he may have blocked the award of building contracts to Camorra-affiliated companies
Finally the footpath drops down to the coast road and I walk along a shingled beach into Acciaroli. In the 1950s, this was Ernest Hemingway’s favourite Italian resort and though the hotel he stayed in has long closed, it’s easy to see why the writer loved it. There’s an old castle
a clutch of houses and several decent cafe-bars where the locals socialise
as if the writer might stroll in and order one of his favourite Italian tipples

"As soon as I saw that luminous image," he recalled to an Italian television program
"I felt a great need to take it and share it."
the photo quickly went viral with many observers comparing the image to the iconic 'Christ the Redeemer' statue in Brazil
who mused that the spiritual-looking anomaly appeared as if it "wanted to bless the whole city of Agropoli" by way of its outstretched arms
residents of the community are largely split over the meaning of the strange sunset
with some suggesting that it was a divine event and others dismissing it as merely a meteorological oddity
Lo Brutto marveled that "this intense experience and the strong feelings I felt" gave him "an even greater religious faith."

an estate agent recommended a little hotel "where they make the most delicious pizza"
A few phone calls all but confirmed my hunch
I suppose I was expecting somewhere grand – an old palazzo perhaps
a temple to Italian cuisine – but Pizzeria Anna
none of the chairs or tables match and there are three TVs showing football and game shows
which turned out to be divided into eight sections
each representing a different selection from the menu
The base was light and crisp – not too crisp
One section was a sample of the remarkable and rare duchessa – a ham and mashed potato pizza
Another section held perfectly cooked squid and huge
slivers of carrot and what I think were pumpkin flowers
I travel to Italy regularly and I eat plenty of pizza so believe me when I tell you that this was extraordinary

Historic exponent of the Democratic Party but above all very faithful to the president of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca: this is Franco Alfieri
who ended up in prison this morning as a result of an investigation into alleged irregularities in two tenders issued by the Municipality of Capaccio Paestum (in the province of Salerno) of which he is mayor
Alfieri was the mayor of Torchiara (municipality where it originates from)
Agropoli (where he served two terms) and Capaccio Paestum
In the latter municipality he was elected in 2019
stopped for a few minutes in front of Alfieri's electoral committee to celebrate his election
Those ambulances belonged to a company of Roberto Squecco
the entrepreneur who in 2014 was arrested for Camorra-style association headed by Giovanni Marandino and aggravated extortion
facts for which he was definitively sentenced
with partial reform of the attempted form of the crime of extortion aggravated by the mafia method
Alfieri became "famous" for the phrases that the president of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca he spoke during a meeting on the 2016 constitutional referendum attended by several local administrators
To encourage administrators to engage in referendum campaign
De Luca essentially invited them to take an example from Franco Alfieri
whose ability to gather consensus in the territory he praised: "Here
Alfieri's commitment will be to bring half of his fellow citizens to vote
with flags going to the polls to vote 'Yes'
but don't come here with one vote less than those you promised"
mayor of Capaccio and president of the Province of Salerno
The current mayor of Capaccio Paestum and president of the Province of Salerno
as well as a loyal supporter of the president of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca
was arrested and transferred to prison in execution of a precautionary custody order on alleged irregularities in the awarding of some tenders announced by the municipal body
against whom the custodial measure of house arrest was triggered: these are Victor DeRosa ed Alfonso D'Auria
respectively legal representative and special attorney of Dervit spa; the mayor's sister
legal representative of Alfieri impianti srl; Andrew Campanile
employee of the municipality of Capaccio and part of the mayor's staff; Carmine Greco
technical manager of the municipality of Capaccio and Rup of the proceedings contested by the prosecutor
The crimes of disturbed freedom of auctions and corruption for an act contrary to official duties are contested in various capacities
The measures were carried out by the military of the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Salerno who
At the center of the investigations are two procedures for the awarding of works: the one relating to the "intervention of adaptation
expansion and energy efficiency of the municipal public lighting system and the one relating to the works of adaptation and energy requalification of the public street lighting of the municipality
with LED lighting fixtures and automatic systems for the regulation
remote control and remote management of the light flow
Both tenders were announced by the Municipality of Capaccio Paestum and awarded to Dervit spa
the defendants allegedly - in various capacities - "disturbed with collusion and other fraudulent means the negotiated procedures aimed at awarding public contracts
in order to guarantee the awarding of the works to Dervit"
The prosecution suspects that Campanile and D'Auria
"the first operating in the name and on behalf of Franco Alfieri and the second in the name and on behalf of Vittorio De Rosa
had agreed on the roads to be included in the executive project concerning future tenders
the times and costs of individual interventions
as well as any other technical detail concerning future works
taking it for granted that Dervit would be awarded the contracts"
for the material drafting of the documents of the two procedures
In support of the accusatory approach there are wiretaps and the results of the documentation
acquired during searches carried out on January 30
long before the official announcement of the incriminated tenders

In 1956 Ed Merante immigrated from Italy in search of the American dream
He left a life of a police officer and landed in Chili after a brief stay with his brother in Niagara Falls
he played soccer in the streets of his hometown
Merante decided that kids in Chili should be introduced to his favorite sport
In 1968 he formed what is now Little Guy Soccer
Pius X church agreed with his plight and allowed the construction of a soccer field
the Minute Man gas station owners bought the soccer balls and Ed bought the nets
A year prior Ed and 11 other men founded the outdoor Rochester Lancer's at the now razed Hollender Stadium on Ridgeway Avenue
He continued as a minority owner until the Lancer's folded 13 years later
Ed saw a need for all kids to have chance to learn a new game
and many of the european immigrants longed to see the game played in United States
He started with 13-16 year olds and four teams including Chili's "Westsiders"
His vision was to "teach them young" and develop talent and see each child at least have the opportunity to try the game
He grew up in a generation were only male athletes participated in soccer
His view of this changed and spoke to many girls to encourage them to participate
"The door is now open for the girls too" he said
Some other highlights that Merante brought to soccer: • First in the NY State to have recognized program
• Helped five other towns and the City of Rochester develop youth soccer
• Passed legislation to have Chili road signs that designate "Little Guy Soccer"
Italy as sister city (they have a "Chili Square" near the town hall
• Spent eight years as a Chili Town Councilman
In 2003 he was inducted into the Rochester Rhino's hall of fame
he was inducted into the indoors Rochester Lancer's Hall of Fame
He said he was very humbled and honored to receive this place in history
The Chili youth "program has been so good to me" Merante said
Ed Merante is truly the father of soccer in not only Chili
and hard work is an inspiration to chase your dreams

They do not enter into your affairs; they rarely speak to you
but not because they are shy or lacking in eloquence
but because they are absent in their own thoughts
and there they go to pieces to satisfy you: they do this out of an inclination to be liked
and it seems to me that this is a very rare civilization
one of the most beautiful areas of Campania
lies in its entirety in the province of Salerno and offers places of great scenic
historical and cultural interest that should not be missed
The name Cilento derives from the Latin term "Cis Alentum"
a river that flows entirely through Campania region
It comprises no less than 80 municipalities and 8 mountain communities
divided into 5 sub-regions that are very different from each other and quite peculiar in their characteristics.
Multiform and multifaceted by its very nature
Cilento offers all its splendour in the form of sea
and it is precisely this contrast that makes this land
so deeply rooted in nature and the environment
so rich in biodiversity and typical products
for the wonders recognized and included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Starting with the beaches and the vast expanses of sand
Cilento has nothing to envy from the rest of Italy
and this year several of them have been awarded the blue flag.
Let's not forget the celebrities and important personalities who have lived
or simply VIPs who have stopped here with their yachts on holiday
An exceptional tourist was the Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti during his trip in 1932
the memory of which he entrusted to his pen in his work Il Deserto e dopo
more exactly in the third part of the collection entitled Mezzogiorno
The presumed and much-debated traces of Acciaroli (a spectacular seaside resort in the municipality of Pollica)
which the American writer Ernest Hemingway seems to have immortalized in his famous 1952 work The Old Man and the Sea
and according to numerous testimonies traveling between myth
the ten days spent by the writer in this small but enchanting place in the province of Salerno
inspired and influenced Hemingway in one of his best-known works
this sub-region of Campania is not only synonymous with nature
but also with culture and an authentic "cradle" of culture
in an enveloping atmosphere of a land that remains forever in the hearts and memories of those who have had the opportunity to walk on it
The Slow Food products are established by the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity Onlus
founded by Slow Food International and Slow Food Italy
This non-profit organization is joined by small food producers with the aim of enhancing and promoting healthy
as well as local ecosystems in clear opposition to fast food
They protect those small quality productions made according to ancient traditional practices
Among the characteristics evaluated by the commission
Cilento's products are currently 14 and combine both the flavors of the sea and the land
and passion and in full respect of nature and the environment
typical of Marina di Pisciotta and Pollica
are the first Slow Food product in Campania
The name Menaica comes from the type of fishing that respects the environment
The White Artichoke of Pertosa is typical of the hilly town of Vallo di Diano -also famous for the Caves of Pertosa- and in the surrounding areas including the towns of Auletta
Among the products most closely linked to Cilento
It is the product of the pasture of an autochthonous species
and it is made through two different processing techniques
that of cacio (cheese) and that of ricotta cheese
is produced in the whole territory of Cilento
Cicerale Chickpea is a legume coming from western Asia
it has had good luck in the municipality of Cicerale
cultivated without the use of additives or chemicals and
whose ancient origins date back to the fourteenth century AD
represent another typical product and a delicacy of Cilento
cultivated in the municipality of Controne
come from very fertile soils rich in carbonates and grow thanks to the numerous aquifers on the massif of the Alburni mountains
another kind of beans with their properties and unmistakable sweet taste
It is a very ancient variety of white climbing bean cultivated in Gorga
it is the latest arrival among the Slow Food products of Cilento
The Fico monnato of Prignano Cilento is another product that has its origins in the ancient peasant tradition
derives from the fact that the Fico Bianco del Cilento (White Fig of Cilento) is peeled and dried
a sort of hollow cylinder of pasta that can be tasted during the famous Fusillo Festival which takes place in the town of Felitto in the second decade of August
it differs from the traditional fusillo from Cilento both for the type of processing and for the length of the pasta (about 20 cm)
The Maracuoccio di Lentiscosa or Maracuoccjo
produced in Lentiscosa in the municipality of Camerota
is a small legume similar to a pea characterized by its squared shape and by a bitterish aftertaste
Used to cook the traditional local dish called maracucciata
it is a legume having an ancient tradition too
The Mozzarella in Mortella is a fresh cheese originating from mount Gelbison and Novi Velia
it is not a real mozzarella but a fresh caciocavallo cheese
it preserves freshness and gives the cheese special and unmistakable aromatic notes
The Olive ammaccate del Cilento are known as a Slow Food product with the name of Oliva salella ammaccata del Cilento

The Ramara Rockets will be swapping their yellow and gold uniforms with red and white next year
they want to look the part while they’re representing their country in an international soccer tournament in Italy
The Ramara girls soccer team will be competing in the under-18 division at the 38th annual Agropoli International Invitational Youth Soccer Tournament in Agropoli
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” said Rockets coach Sebastian Chiaramida
“It’s a memory for them.”
The Canadian representative for the tournament asked the coach if his team would be interested in attending
The Rockets jumped at the chance to be the only Canadian team invited to compete in the under-18 division
“We want to make this area proud and show we’re good even if we’re from a small area,” said Claire Lassaline
“Good” might be an understatement
But they’re flying into a country that lives and breathes soccer
and the seriousness with which the Italians and other Europeans take the game is not lost on Lassaline
but we don’t know how good we are on a global scale,” she said
“I’m looking forward to finding that out.”
is also looking forward to the learning opportunity
“I think I’ll be able to improve my skills and also have fun,” said the goaltender
The planned itinerary will see the Rockets exploring ancient Rome and the Isle of Capri
“We are very excited for the travelling,” said Avery Dobson
“I’m very excited because it opens doors and opportunities.”
When the team touches down in Rome on April 14
it won’t be long before the sightseeing takes a back seat and the action kicks into high gear
The Rockets’ first game will be played April 17
and Dobson admitted she is somewhat “intimidated” to take on teams from afar
“They totally see another side of the game,” she said
The Rockets have demonstrated their ability to rally as a team
“We have to get into the mental state and have confidence,” said Lassaline
Chiaramida has confidence in his athletes — and in the generosity of the community to help them get to Italy
The community will have a chance to help this weekend
The Rockets will be stationed in Orillia at No Frills and Canadian Tire from 9 a.m
collecting donations to ease the financial burden of their overseas adventure
The trip will cost the 14 players about $2,700 each
Those who cannot make it to those locations this weekend can still support the team. For more information, contact Chiaramida at 705-327-2055 or [email protected]
