Italian born, London-based DJ Airali takes a DIY approach to her musical activities – why sit around waiting for something to happen to you when you can make things happen yourself
another collective who similarly advocate strongly for more gender balance on lineups
music feeds heavily into her day-to-day – she’s currently studying a PHD in music research and AI while
she’s also working towards launching her own party this year – so keep tabs on that
This week’s Wednesday Alternative mix is definitely in safe hands
Much like her monthly residency on Netil Radio
on today’s excursion she explores shapeshifting electronics
crisp sound design and mutant dancehall and techno rhythms…
Ransom Note · Airali: The ‘Wednesday Alternative’ Mix
a DJ and music researcher born in Southern Italy and currently based in London
Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix
I almost exclusively listen to mixes while walking
so recording them has now become entangled with thinking about walks
I love it because you can keep moving forward and get places while your mind is on another planet and every fibre of your body moves to the music
This mix in particular is designed for one of those moderately paced strolls where you get lost in weird
Good headphones and comfy shoes for the walk
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format
Outdoor on a warm summer night surrounded by friends
Which track in the mix is your current favourite
Doubt by Phrixus
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time
I very distinctly remember listening to it the first time on my way home a few years ago and it just changed the game for me
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history
My favourite DJs are probably all contemporaries
so I’d say Batu because he’s been one of the first DJs to really inspire me when I started out
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now
First one was a pair of Numark Pro TT-2 and a DJM-T1 with DVS which I found all together listed on Gumtree for cheap
a Technics SL-1210 and a MasterSounds Linear 4V mixer
the track you start on or the track you end on
as it sets the mood and gets listeners interested
because that moment could stay with you and the crowd forever
What were the first and last records you bought
but I do remember one of the first CDs I had as a kid was a Festivalbar compilation CD (Italian 2000s kids will understand)
First record for mixing was The Groove Corporation – ‘Rain’
Last one was the Catherine Tracks EP by De Grandi and DJ JM
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything
I have a whole Rekordbox tag dedicated to this because I just like impossible music
The most recent is probably Metaplasm by Rian Trenor
some other exciting gigs and a few festivals in the spring/summer
Balancing it all with a really intense PhD schedule
And I’ve been working on launching my own party soon too

We first caught wind of maya q earlier this year though her sophomore release for London imprint All Centre
Anyone with a penchant for hot footing it to a takeaway after a late night booze up will have had a chuckle at the title of the first track
I hastened to the chicken shoppe / beno (soft) marked maya’s second outing on the well-respected label
along with the releases’ predecessor on Scuffed Recordings
showcase her experimental approach to creating swung rhythms
low end frequencies and syncopated drum patterns inspired by jungle
but with her own unique melodic and playful touch
When maya isn’t making music, she DJing as part of the Co-Select crew alongside the likes of TSUNIMAN, Airali and Will Hofbauer, the latter of whom released her most recent musical outing, break rev
We got her on board for a mix that threads together the music she loves from poppy electronics to ethereal jungle
and I’m a software engineer and very occasionally a producer/dj
Sines – Love in the club vol 2
Two XDJs I went halves on with a friend and a slightly broken mixer we got at mate’s rates
The first was the What a Pleasure EP by Beach Fossils
The last record was Multiple Restarts by Will Hofbauer
'I felt death in the air' - Ali v Foreman | Inside story of 'Rumble in the Jungle'
The 'Rumble in the Jungle' is unquestionably one of the most famous fights in boxing history - as a 32-year-old Muhammad Ali won his heavyweight world crown back against the fancied 25-year-old George Foreman
and Ali's business manager Gene Kilroy remembers the night - October 30th
Kilroy joined Off The Ball's Shane Hannon for an excusive in-depth interview
and he recalled Ali's confidence in the build-up
'How do I fight this guy?' He said 'You must throw your punches with bad intentions.'
"He said 'Your first punch you must hit him so hard.' I said 'Well
"'That's not Ali!' So Ali said 'I know what I'm doing.' I went into the dressing room when they were taping Foreman's hands
"I go back to Ali's dressing room and he says 'What's he saying?' I said 'He's talking about putting your kids in an orphanage.'
George used to knock guys down and step on them to get to the neutral corner
As the member of Ali's team that was present in Foreman's dressing room pre-fight for the gloving process
Kilroy is in a unique position to compare the atmosphere in his dressing room with that for 'The Greatest.'
Ali's [attitude was] 'This is my fight tonight
if he had told the people 'I want to be your king' they might have marched Mobutu out of there
"When we got off the airplane [over to Zaire] Ali turned to me and said 'Who don't they like here?' I said 'I guess white people.'
Who else?' And I said 'The Belgians.' So we got off and everyone was screaming 'Ali
George Foreman's a Belgian.' And they started screaming 'Ali Bomaye!' I asked our interpreter 'What does that mean?' [He said] 'That means 'Ali
"The Belgians used to put German police dogs on the blacks over there
so when George gets off the airplane he had a dog there
He walked out and the people are chanting 'Belgian
Kilroy also recalls Ali threatening not to fight in the last moments before making his ringwalk
determined to have the poor people outside the stadium who couldn't afford tickets as part of the crowd
"You're gonna beat cancer, and I'm gonna beat George Foreman."How a meeting with a dying child changed @MuhammadAli.Exclusive hour-long interview - Ali's former business manager Gene Kilroy speaks to @ShaneHannon01 here: https://t.co/UKrjvjKSsL pic.twitter.com/IkbmerIJZd
— Off The Ball (@offtheball) June 1, 2020
There must have been maybe 15,000 poor people outside the stadium
you could hear them from [inside] the stadium
so I got in touch with the top aide to Mobutu
I said 'Ali wants to see you.' We go back to the dressing room and Ali said
'If you don't let those people in I'm not fighting.'
"And he [Mobutu's aide] said that wasn't fair to people who bought tickets
you can clearly see Kilroy is the first man into the ring to get to Ali
keen to get him away quickly so he avoid being swarmed by the crowd
I begged him to retire [after the Foreman fight.] I begged him
"But he liked the smell of the grease paint and the roar of the crowd
