Michael Airola was introduced to lipid research as a graduate student in Brian R. Crane’s lab at Cornell University
studying bacterial receptors involving transmembrane signaling
“This was when researchers who work with membrane proteins started using model lipid membranes like nanodiscs and paying attention to the effect of the lipid environment on membrane protein structure and function,” he said
Airola’s horizons widened when, for his postdoc, he moved to Yusuf A. Hannun’s lab at Stony Brook University
“Hannun is a pioneer in studying the enzymes involved in sphingolipid metabolism,” Airola said
“He was interested in atomic details of how these enzymes work
… I brought structural skills and learned a lot about lipid biochemistry and techniques related to handling lipids and working with lipid membranes
Michael Airola’s lab focuses on lipid-modifying enzymes, such as lipins, that are relevant to cancer, cardiovascular disease and fungal infections.
“We use structural biology techniques such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM coupled with an array of biochemical and cellular approaches in our research work,” Airola said. “These works are complemented by computational methods such as docking and molecular dynamic simulations to gain a molecular level understanding of lipid metabolism and lipid signaling.”
The lab tries to determine how these enzymes’ structures allow them to recognize their unique hydrophobic substrates and interact with the membrane during catalysis and how these proteins are regulated through interactions with specific lipids or other protein effectors, he explained.
Airola’s lab determined the first structures of human phospholipase D, a therapeutic target for cancer, and a lipin phosphatidic acid phosphatase that regulates fat storage as triglycerides. They are now developing inhibitors for fungal-specific lipid-modifying enzymes.
“I believe this work can make an impact in the real world in my lifetime to fight against the life-threatening fungal pathogen especially prevalent in hospital environments in the U.S.,” he said.
During Discover BMB, the 2023 annual meeting of the ASBMB, in addition to speaking at the JLR Spotlight Session, Airola will discuss his work in the symposium on lipid dynamics and signals in membrane and protein structure.

— Lake Tahoe Community College has hired a seasoned community college coach and former student-athlete champion to launch and lead its new collegiate cross country and long distance track programs.
a two-time California Community College Athletic Association individual cross country and track and field champion with extensive coaching experience
with the program’s first competitive season beginning in August
“We’ve had great success in our men’s and women’s soccer programs
with a number of students making All-America scholar teams
and transferring to four-year universities,” said LTCC Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco
“We are looking to achieve similar success here with our next chapter of athletic undertakings.”
After launching its soccer programs in the 2014-15 academic year
LTCC began exploring the idea of adding additional sports within five years
cross country and long distance track is set to start for the 2023-24 year
“Matt has first-hand knowledge and experience in all aspects of his new position,” said DeFranco
“He knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level of a California Community College as a student- athlete
and then to transfer to a major four-year institution and achieve both academically and as an athlete.”
was a two-time CCCAA individual cross country and track and field champion at American River College in Sacramento
He was a key member in helping ARC to earn CCCAA state titles as a student-athlete (2011-12)
and then later as a volunteer assistant coach (2015-16)
Airola earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of Alabama for both cross country and track and field
where he was awarded his Bachelor’s Degree in human environmental science
He was named to the NCAA Division 1 All-Academic team for two years during his undergraduate years
and also served as the cross country team captain
He went on to earn his Master’s Degree in sport management at the University of Alabama while continuing to hone his leadership and mentoring skills
He earned a second Master’s Degree from Fresno Pacific University in kinesiology
Airola has been both a teacher and a coach
and has worked with students from junior high school and high school at Carquinez Middle School in Crockett
first as the assistant cross country and track and field coach at ARC and as the head cross country coach at College of the Desert in Palm Desert
Airola will begin this month with a focus on athlete recruitment and launching the program in order to be ready for August
He plans on launching with at least 14 athletes
and hopes to expand the roster to 24 student-athletes in the second and third seasons
In alignment with the college’s mission to encourage degree completion
students must be registered full time at LTCC in order to participate in collegiate athletics
LTCC competes in the CCCAA’s Golden Valley Conference
The cross country season takes place in fall
and long distance track launches in spring 2024
Interested student-athletes and parents who want to learn more about these sports and about being a student-athlete at LTCC can contact Airola at airola@ltcc.edu
“Lake Tahoe is a distance runner’s dream location
and I cannot think of a more perfect place to begin my lifelong coaching journey,” said Airola
“I’m looking forward to bringing in the most well-rounded student-athletes to this amazing school while building one of the most elite programs in the CCCAA.”

You can’t say Michael Airola wasn’t warned
While trying to develop a research program that would differentiate his own lab from his postdoctoral mentor’s
he set out to determine the structure of phospholipase D
“I cautioned Mike that there was an elephant graveyard of grad students and postdocs who had attempted to solve these structures,” Michael Frohman
who had discovered the protein 20 years prior
who received the ASBMB’s 2022 Walter A
Shaw Young Investigator Award in Lipid Research
“I was optimistic … I thought
‘we have a chance; we had an interesting idea
and I don’t think anyone has tried that
That idea was to remove a section from the middle of the protein that appeared
The more orderly portions left behind crystallized beautifully
When it became clear that the approach would work
“It looks like you may have a successful Ph.D
Why do you think I joined your lab?”
Airola knew that not every graduate student answers their first research question — especially if it depends on crystallizing a protein
He had started his own dissertation interested in the structure of circadian signaling in human cells
He transitioned to a question about bacterial chemotaxis; studying a transmembrane signaling system got him interested in membrane biology
which brought him to Yusuf Hannun’s lab at Stony Brook University
Airola determined the structure of two sphingolipid-metabolizing enzymes
he landed a job as a professor at Stony Brook
Airola’s own recent collaborations to boost graduate students and postdocs have included co-organizing a weekly virtual seminar series in lipid research that as many as 500 researchers attended at the height of pandemic lockdowns
focusing on lipid-modifying proteins — both phospholipase D and a phosphatase called lipin — that are important for signaling yet challenging to study
He is interested in lipid droplet proteins and in how new sequence-based structure prediction tools will help generate hypotheses about which parts of a protein might be critical to its structure
put hitherto impossible structures within reach
“I’m very aware that some projects aren’t going to work,” Airola said
“But I also don’t want to work on things that are just easy.”
it’s a balancing act to help trainees select projects
“I try to help guide them through all the things I learned through failing to help them succeed — but then
let’s shelve it for a little bit and let’s try something else.’”
In a letter nominating Airola for the Shaw award
“All of his graduate students are excelling and driven
and everything they touch seems to turn to gold.”

- University of Alabama senior Matt Airola was born and raised in California
never stepping foot on an indoor track until joining the Crimson Tide
Airola is running some of the best indoor mile times in school history
Along with sophomore Robbie Farnham-Rose
Airola is closing in on the school's 16-year-old mile record
"Matt has really become a savvy racer," said Alabama head coach Dan Waters
"He did not have a lot of experience running indoors when he came to us
but he has put in an enormous amount of effort to be where he is today."
Waters says that Airola has the combination of two talents that signals a great miler: foot-speed and the ability to hang on at a fast pace
"He would be in the mix at whatever pace is set," Waters said
"I think that attests to his mental strength
He understands what it is going to take for him to reach the finish line and he executes that in every single race."
Airola's ability has landed him two runner-up finishes in both mile races he has entered - with both wins going to fellow Farnham-Rose
The two are working together to break Tim Broe's school-record mile time of 3:59.38
Both Airola and Farnham-Rose understand the goal and what it will take to achieve it
whether it means ensuring the pace is set during a competition or they need to motivate each other on days that aren't so great
The duo's success has been evident so far in 2015
The two ran fast mile times at the first meet of the season (the Auburn Invitational on Jan
running close to their respective personal bests
emerging three weeks later better and faster
Both Farnham-Rose and Airola secured personal bests at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational mile
Airola's time of 4:01.66 is the fifth-best time in Tide history
It also put him in contention to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships
"One of Matt's goals is to qualify as an individual for the national championships," Waters said
What kept him from running a sub-four minute mile in Lincoln were the extra tenths of a second that accumulated each lap
that we can eliminate those fractions of a second."
Over the three years he has been with Alabama
The senior's improved knowledge of indoor racing has led to tactical techniques that have pushed him to the front of the strong fields of racers he has faced so far this year
It has also put him on the cusp of running a mile in less than four minutes
"He's been consistent and worked hard since he's stepped foot on campus," Waters said
"He has truly committed to this program and achieving his goals
and the sacrifices he's made to be where he is are starting to really pay off
Something very special will happen for Matt when everything we have worked on comes together."

Close to 40,000 people are under evacuation orders in California
as four new wildfires started on Wednesday in the state already struggling to battle multiple large blazes
the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) confirmed that four new wildfires had started in the state
with the Airola Fire in Calaveras County the worst
having already destroyed 700 acres by the end of the day
which sparked in San Bernardino County on Wednesday
while the Westward Fire in Riverside County and the Bennett Fire in Nevada County have burned 200 and 59 acres respectively
The South and Airola fires are 0 percent contained
but the Westward blaze is 10 percent contained and the Bennett Fire has seen 60 percent containment
The four new blazes are burning in California alongside seven others
prompting there to be 37,252 people evacuated by Wednesday
according to the office of emergency services
The majority of the evacuations have taken place in El Dorado County
due to the Caldor Fire that is continuing to grow close to Lake Tahoe after starting on August 14
The Caldor Fire has so far destroyed 126,566 acres while being 12 percent contained
with the blaze continuing to move closer to the border between California and Nevada
Data from Cal Fire shows that 637 buildings have been destroyed due to the fire and 37 have been damaged
with the agency assigning 80 crews totalling 2,897 personnel to help tackle the blaze
51 dozers and 27 water tenders are at the site of the large wildfire
The fire is one of 11 blazes currently burning in California that have so far destroyed 1,358,145 acres of land
according to data from the National Interagency Fire Center
At least 92 large wildfires that have destroyed more than 2.5 million acres are currently burning in the U.S
across 13 states after a heatwave and drought in early July caused blazes to break out across the West Coast
Officials have stressed that the devastating effects of the wildfires in the past few years have been exacerbated by the effects of climate change
the Dixie Fire has now destroyed 742,724 acres at 45 percent contained
just behind the August Complex blaze that burned more than 1 million acres in 2020
On Tuesday, in reaction to the wildfires burning in California, President Joe Biden approved a disaster declaration for the state just a day after Newsom asked for him to do so
The White House confirmed on Tuesday that it had ordered "[f]ederal aid to supplement State
and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by wildfires beginning on July 14

Starting off our countdown with a puck moving defenseman
The 2021 version of the list beings with a promising
2021 Pensburgh Top 25 Under 25: Graduates and Departed
Elite Prospects resume:
two days of watching Airola in Cranberry when the Penguins had their last summer prospect development camp were enough to get on my radar
puck moving abilities — Airola was comparable to one of the star prospects of the time in Calen Addison
Addison was much more authoritative in directing a power play and all around a more developed player (that’s why Addison was a second round pick versus Airola being a seventh rounder) but a lot of the same material was there when watching drills and practice to tie the two together as fairly similar to the eye
but the European leagues offered a chance to play more games
he suffered an undisclosed injury in preseason that kept him out until January
But he made a splash in his first game for Ilves
Santeri Airola (@Penguins) picked up two assists yesterday for Ilves in Finnish Liiga action.#LetsGoPens https://t.co/Hmp5JW5d3A pic.twitter.com/xqdyLJ7ad3
Airola pretty much graduated to being a full-time player in the Liiga
an always impressive sign of a path through the ranks to a high level of competition
I’ve seen a report there is an option for another season in 2022-23
that time will tell if he stays in Finland or is looking to sign with the Penguins and come over to North America
it’s probably best for Airola’s potential to make it to the NHL to get into the organization and acclimate to the game as quickly as possible
Goals are down in the bigger rink and style Europe
and even in Pittsburgh as an unsigned player he’s probably not being counted on as any sort of piece of the puzzle in the future
Which sort of makes Airola one of those lottery tickets at the end of the NHL draft
Most of those players go about their careers and don’t end up having what it takes to make it all the way to the NHL
But the Pens always have a need for young players
it will be a sort of “found money” for the Pens in the future
he was just a seventh round pick and they’ll have more players in the system to consider
it’s only a bonus if there’s a diamond in the rough or something meaningful that continues to develop and grow
This is still a longer-term development project
but one worth keeping somewhat on the radar
Airola can skate well and has shown some nice offensive instincts
Despite the rocky nature of the world in the last 18ish months
he’s still found a way to make a tangible advance in his career
Lawyers from across the country are busily rallying former students of Nevada-based Silver State Helicopters, which abruptly went out of business and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection two weeks ago
As many as 2,700 students paid about $70,000 each for the proposed 18-month training program
told AVweb that last weekend he met with about 150 potential plaintiffs in Arizona and plans to meet with a similar group in Georgia this weekend
He plans to file suits against Silver States founder Jerry Airola and
"One of the problems is that many of these people dont know what kind of loan they have," Lown said
the primary originator of student loans to Silver State students
had not filed a claim with the bankruptcy court and did not respond to repeated requests by AVweb for information about the number and type of outstanding loans made to Silver State students
It is not known how many of the loans were private loans and how many
but Lown told AVweb that some of the people hes spoken with were paying 17 percent interest or more
While the bankruptcy trustee spends the coming months poring through thousands of claims (it has a special hotline established just for this case)
former students and employees are posting to message boards and telling AVweb that signs of the companys impending demise began to surface in October 2007
Jimmie "Tri" Evans was the first student enrolled at the Houston location when it opened in 2006
He told AVweb that around the time that he earned his instructors certificate last fall
rumors began to spread internally that the company was in trouble
"Some people had started to get the indication that it might be occurring
then we were sent e-mails that it was just a rumor
Evans said that at one point the Houston school had 60 students and just one helicopter that had to be ferried 130 miles away to Silver States New Braunfels
"We couldnt fit everybody into the helicopters we had
I remember flying until midnight or at four in the morning because thats when they had a helicopter," Evans said
once one of the most numerous birds in California
is now a species that most Californians will never see; however
committed conservationists like Dan Airola are working to change that
Airola has been tirelessly pursuing the Tricolored Blackbird
His passion for the conservation and study of this species has led to thousands of miles on his car
but also important data that is helping the conservation community better understand Tricolored Blackbirds
His research has shed light on how the birds are using rangelands and on why smaller colonies can contribute an important role saving the species
While a high proportion of Tricolored Blackbirds nest in massive colonies on San Joaquin Valley farms
there are also smaller colonies using California’s foothills to nest
and as we are learning from Dan - facing their own threats and challenges
Dan has been leading an effort to monitor the threat that suburban and urban growth poses to Tricolored Blackbird colonies in the lower foothills of the Sierra Nevada
The recent economic recovery has increased the pace of expansion of cities and neighborhoods into critical Tricolored Blackbird nesting and foraging habitat in the foothills
many of these development projects were approved prior to the recent listing of the species as a candidate under the state Endangered Species Act
and the project developers have not addressed the impact their projects have on Tricolored Blackbirds
Dan’s studies show that nearly half of the 2014 foothill nesting population are in areas slated for development
His work also shows that many foothill colonies consistently produce young
While residential and commercial development threatens a number of Tricolored Blackbird colonies in the Sierra Nevada Foothill region
another less visible threat is also present
Dan's studies have shown the importance of grassland and pasture habitats in the Sierra region to Tricolored Blackbirds
which rely on these areas to forage and feed their young
These lands also form the backbone of the livestock industry in the region
is largely responsible for the healthy Tricolored Blackbird population in the foothills
This fortuitous confluence of economic activity and conservation
is threatened by widespread conversion of rangelands to orchards and vineyards in the region
during surveys in San Joaquin and Calaveras counties
Dan documented thousands of acres of Tricolored Blackbird habitat that was lost by planting of orchard trees and vines.
By understanding where and how Tricolored Blackbirds are using the foothills
conservationists can better target land protection and conservation to benefit the species
In the southern Sierra foothills Tricolored Blackbird nesting virtually disappeared during recent drought years
Dan is now evaluating whether the birds will nest in the southern Sierra Foothills as normal rainfall conditions replenish the ponds
and canals that produce the wetland vegetation used by Tricolored Blackbirds
Surveys show that a number of Tricolored Blackbird colonies are returning to the southern Sierra foothills
This initial encouraging result validates the ongoing planning efforts to create high quality
stable nesting habitat in the Southern Sierra Region
Dan’s studies show that if we build this habitat
we can increase foothill Tricolored Blackbird populations
We’ve done the math -- guaranteeing that a Tricolored Blackbird can fully fledge works out to about $1/bird. It’s a small price to pay to protect this beautiful species

The Pittsburgh Penguins wrapped up their player picking in the 2019 draft with a bit of excitement
with the 203rd overall pick in the seventh round of the 2019 draft
The Pens selected Finnish over-age winger Valtteri Puustinen
In the recent past the Pens have nabbed Dominik Simon and Justin Alemeida in the past and now goes again with Puustinen
There’s not a ton out there about Puustinen

He played in the top league against men over there
Draft day is just a beginning on the path to the NHL
They traded their seventh rounder next year (2020) for a pick San Jose owned at 211th overall
Pittsburgh went back to the Finnish ranks to add their first defensemen of the draft in Santeri Airola
ranked the 130th European skater in the draft but he did make his way up to the Liiga at a young age (18) as a right shot defenseman
So this is the end for the Pens selections
They ended up through trades only adding five players and prospects to the fold this weekend
It will take years to see what they can or can’t add to the organization
Now comes the fun part to wait and see how it goes
