Miami-based real estate associate Alessandria San Roman shares her family's inspiring journey from Cuba to America
Discover how her grandparents' struggle under the Castro regime shaped her values
Join us in celebrating the diverse experiences that enrich our firm and community
proudly representing the Miami office as a real estate associate at Holland & Knight
I'm excited to share a piece of my journey with you all
I am a first generation American of Cuban descent
Both of my parents fled Cuba at a young age in the 1960s
My grandfather was a political prisoner under the Castro regime
Hearing the stories firsthand from my grandparents of having the government search their home in the middle of the night and placing my grandfather in a labor camp
to the day that they fled Cuba with nothing but the clothes on their backs
My brother and I were always taught that the next generation should strive to do better than the prior one
You are not going to be probably the only Latino or Latina in the classroom
did your parents come on a boat?" So — and not that it was mentioned in
There have been so many different opportunities that have come my way because I've pushed myself
whether it's that mentality of you need to work hard because we've got to overcome the fact that
you're not necessarily like everyone else in the classroom
helped me fight a little bit harder for the things that I wanted to really achieve
I think it's super important to learn from those opportunities that just maybe didn't pan out
But my grandparents and my parents always instilled in me that you don't give up
My grandmother never misses an opportunity to tell me how proud she is of me
Obviously there's a large generational gap
were not necessarily seen the way Latin women are now
kind of always having to be subordinate to men
those that made those sacrifices before us

In the northern Italian town of Alessandria
a small restaurant is turning something as ordinary as a pizza box into a vehicle for change
has launched a unique initiative in collaboration with the animal welfare organization Tutela Animali: photos and short bios of dogs in need of adoption are printed on every takeout pizza box
Each box features the face of a dog currently living in a local shelter
along with a short description and contact information for those interested in giving the animal a new home
they’re greeted not only by the smell of fresh pizza
but also by the eyes of a dog looking for love
It’s hard to ignore that,” Amato told la Repubblica
And the impact is already visible—several of the dogs featured have found new families thanks to this creative
The initiative speaks to a larger problem across Italy where thousands of dogs are abandoned each year
While shelters and volunteers work tirelessly
one of the biggest hurdles remains visibility
This is where partnerships like the one between Bistrot Barbarossa and Tutela Animali can truly make a difference
It’s also a reminder that social change doesn’t always need grand gestures—sometimes
“I hope other businesses join in,” Amato said
In a world saturated with traditional advertising
this grassroots effort stands out for its sincerity and simplicity
It's a small but powerful example of how food
and compassion can come together to create real impact—one slice at a time

On the night between 5 and 6 November 1994
a terrible flood hit the provinces of Cuneo
an important research activity was started in Piedmont between public bodies responsible for land management
the academic world and professionals to define guidelines for geological studies and to produce rules for the prevention of geo-hydrological risk
The conference is organized by the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Turin
by the Italian Society of Environmental Geology (SIGEA) -APS
by CNR IRPI of Turin and by the Regional Order of Geologists of Pemontet and will see the contribution from the Piemonte Region
ISPRA and the Po River Basin Authority with the patronage of the CNG and the various local administrations

The local committees and Greenpeace have announced the results of tests carried out on 36 citizens who live near the chemical plant and paid for the tests out of their own pockets
All samples certified the presence of harmful substances above the limits
during a press conference organised in front of the Piedmontese city's prefecture by Greenpeace and local committees
which have been fighting for years to ban perfluoroalkyl substances
used to make everyday objects and considered harmful to humans and the environment
The analyses involved 36 people living in the Spinetta Marengo area: in all of them the presence of pfas was found
which doctors consider to be endocrine disrupters
able to influence the change of hormones responsible for development
"We ask President Alberto Cirio to come here and talk to us
who should protect us?" said the citizens attending the conference
who have been waiting almost four years for the analyses financed by the Region
they decided to pay the 90 euros needed to find out whether the carcinogenic substances were present in their segue
'We hoped to fall back on the Region's biomonitoring announced in 2021,' denounces Mirella Benazzo
we managed to get more adhesions than those collected by the regional sampling,' adds Giuseppe Ungherese
'which shows how concerned the people living near the chemical plant are
The 36 blood samples were sent to Aachen University thanks to the coordination of Greenpeace Italy
which has been following pfas contamination in Italy since 2016
first in Veneto and then in other northern regions
PFAS, thousands of people in Piedmont drank contaminated water, says Greenpeace
The examinations involved eight municipalities located within a ten-kilometre radius of the chemical plant
with the values increasing significantly in the vicinity of the plant and appearing to be related to age and gender
with adult males being the most affected by the bioaccumulation of pfas in the blood
all samples showed traces of pfas in excess of the limits set by the US National academies of sciences (Nas)
which indicate 2 nanograms per millilitre as the maximum threshold not to be exceeded
even 20 nanograms per millilitre are exceeded
a suburb that is home to Solvay's 130 hectares
the maximum value of 32 nanograms per millilitre was reached
of which 22.76 nanograms alone of the carcinogen pfoa
a substance that belongs to the pfas group
we asked citizens to explain what they know about pfas and the basic information about their families," Benazzo continues
there is one case of cancer in each household
It is also worrying that no general practitioner has ever spoken to his patients about pfas and the possible tests to be performed to understand whether or not the substances are present in the blood'
The tests carried out in Alessandria follow a first round of analyses carried out in 2023 by the Belgian television network Rtfb
the Alessandria committees involved activists from the Veneto region
who have been exposed to the largest pfas contamination in Europe since 2013
and asked the Veneto's Doctors for the Environment Isde association for help
The support of the Mamme No pfas and other activists was also important
An IARC study confirms that PFOAs are carcinogenic and toxic
and I lost my father and husband to cancer
which I use to irrigate my vegetable garden
analysed and high values of pfas were found
What do I have to do to protect my health?" asked a resident who underwent the test
the woman discovered that the pfas values in her blood exceeded 20 nanograms per millilitre
The analysis conducted by the University of Aachen
could not measure the two pfas produced and patented by Solvay Syensqo and its previous owner Ausimont: cC6O4
are only available for research in environmental matrices
it is analysed worldwide by only two institutions: the Policlinico di Milano – which since 2021 has been Solvay's labour clinic and which finds up to 3 milligrams per litre in the blood of workers (3 million times higher than the 2 nanogram threshold) – and the Regione Piemonte
which in the only biomonitoring carried out so far on farmers who feed on products grown near the chemical hub
indicated an average of 15 micrograms per litre (a thousand times higher than the threshold)
pfas produced by the Alessandria chemical plant reaches the blood of residents through food
which is in turn contaminated by emissions from the plants' chimneys
Amag Reti idriche – the company that manages the drinking water network of the eight Alessandria municipalities affected by these new blood tests – to lavialibera 's specific question on the presence of pfas in Spinetta Marengo's drinking water
replied that 'the values are all below the limits that will come into force in January 2026'
who until November 2023 had never found traces of pfas
albeit with values below 100 nanograms per litre
the threshold imposed by the new drinking water directive from 2026

The Devils and Wolves International Economics Seminar Series brings world-class research in international economics to the Triangle
These Poole Thought Leadership columns build on the research presented at the seminars to help entrepreneurs
policymakers and journalists better understand key current trends in the global economy
In this column, Poole College’s Daisoon Kim, assistant professor of economics, and Luca David Opromolla
Owens Distinguished Professor of International Economics
share research presented at the March 22 seminar
steel and signaled new tariffs to block cheap electric vehicles and other clean-energy imports from China
The constant flow of trade news, like the recent U.S. policy shift, shapes our globalized economy. A captivating study by Professor George Alessandria (University of Rochester) and Carter Mix (Federal Reserve Board) highlights a fascinating aspect of this news cycle: its impact on the present economy
Economists typically focus on unexpected events
but Alessandria and Mix highlight the unique case of trade deals
which unfold gradually from announcement to implementation
Imagine you hear about a cheaper phone coming out next month
in anticipation of saving money on the phone itself later
mirrored by consumers and businesses alike
is the crux of Alessandria and Mix’s research
they explore how news of impending tariff reductions influences individuals and businesses
Their findings reveal intriguing patterns: Consumers may boost current spending in anticipation of future prosperity
while businesses might postpone investments awaiting lower costs
This cautious approach could precipitate a transient slowdown before the trade deal materializes
Empirical evidence from past agreements corroborates these insights
Economies experienced a slight deceleration before the agreements came into effect
underscoring the profound impact of future economic forecasts on present-day dynamics
Alessandria and Mix’s research underscores the paramount importance of accounting for future expectations when assessing the ramifications of trade deals
By furnishing economists with innovative analytical tools
it explains the intricate interplay between trade policy and economic trajectories over time
Understanding these anticipation effects allows policymakers to design trade deals with smoother economic transitions

The museum AcdB presents an exhibition dedicated to the early days of the bicycle in Europe
defined as the “brief season of the bicycle”
This period represents a crucial chapter in the evolution of the vehicle
when technological innovation focused on the search for speed and the creation of models with increasingly advanced features
such as the “michaudina” introduced in Alessandria by Carlo Michel
paved the way for a series of developments
the front drive wheel became progressively larger
reaching dimensions comparable to the height of a person
Among the best-known models are the Grand-Bi
created by the Parisian mechanic Victor Renard
produced in Anglo-Saxon countries from 1868
allowed for greater distances to be covered with each pedal stroke
The English name penny farthing It derives from the similarity in size between the two wheels and those of the British coins
Il bicycle he also became the protagonist of the first cycling competitions
established himself as the first Italian speed champion in Turin in 53
in 1886 in the “endurance” category and in XNUMX in the “tricycle” category
made possible thanks to the contribution of collectors and families of enthusiasts
used by their family until the mid-twentieth century
There is also the bicycle of the champion from Asti Giovanni Gerbi

In the summer of 2021, University of Rochester economist George Alessandria wanted to buy his 12-year-old son a bicycle
and another—only to find a limited inventory of bikes
as long as they were willing to wait a year
Consumers in the United States and elsewhere have been having a difficult time buying lumber
there were spikes in consumer demand for certain items at the beginning of the COVID pandemic
which put stresses on the global supply chains
explains how supply chain issues continue to reverberate through the American and global economies
Alessandria: Supply chain is a catchall phrase to represent the movement of goods or parts from suppliers to the next stage of production
which could be another producer or a retailer
Alessandria: We’re talking about things that make it difficult to get products along the path from one producer to another
It’s like a river where stuff is heading downstream
but something blocks the flow of materials
It just takes longer for people to get the parts they need to produce
And that results in consumers not seeing items on store shelves
Alessandria: This is the worst that it’s been in 50 years—and it’s probably getting worse
considering that China has been shutting down cities and production facilities
The massive lockdowns in Shanghai and Beijing will eventually ripple through the system again
Alessandria: It all started with COVID-19 and the shutting down of ports and factories
which slowed down the movement of goods around the world
And then it just became hard to partially reopen the economy
since public health issues remained in play
That’s why we saw periodic closures of facilities and ports around the world all through 2021
the bounce-back in consumer demand has been stronger than what was anticipated
It’s like trying to push more and more stuff through a straw that shrank
While the supply chain shortages started with COVID
they’re also due to increased consumer demand
which was fueled by the federal stimulus checks that we probably didn’t need to keep the economy recovering
We just didn’t understand how consumer demand was going to shift
Alessandria: One reason is that some of the things we want are produced further away
which means there are more opportunities for disruptions
It could be that there’s a $1 part in a $25,000 car that isn’t available
so the car can’t be fully manufactured and sold
operations at a company that’s the single supplier of a part—such as a microprocessor—may suddenly stop because of a fire or some other reason
and rebuilding that capacity takes a long time
There are obviously efficiency gains from buying stuff where it’s more cheaply produced
retailers have ways of dealing with shortages
a retailer buying bikes from a guy in California may have to place fewer
but he has the option of buying a large quantity of bikes from Taiwan
when there’s an especially bad shock like COVID
the retailer is able to adjust inventories because international trade provides an additional buffer
it usually doesn’t make sense to shift production to the US
computer chips were in short supply because there was a demand for 50 million computers and tablets for kids who were suddenly working from home
When a city becomes the host for the Super Bowl
but it isn’t cost-effective in the long run to build new hotels
we don’t build new factories to address rare spikes in demand
Alessandria: That’s part of a research project we’re working on right now. There are many factors that affect inflation—inflation being the change in the price level
those factors are mostly transitory and can lead to a surge in prices
but they won’t cause prices to consistently grow 6
But those supply chain issues can absolutely contribute to a big increase in prices
The long-run effects depend on how policymakers respond
There are so many things going on in the world right now that it’s hard to isolate one factor
we found that these supply disruptions would lower economic activity by about one percentage point within six quarters of the start of the disruptions
the disruptions that we’re currently seeing could knock 4 to 5 percent off of industrial production in the next year or two
We’re just pushing too much stuff through the pipeline right now
and maybe the efficient thing to do is to slow down economic activity
which will allow businesses to restock so that we can get into a better productive situation
which is slowing down the movement of goods around the world
sanctions on Russia have stopped the flow of some goods
Those policies have consequences on the global economy
But the truth is that even if the oil from Russia doesn’t go to Europe
That process of rejiggering where things go does create a temporary void that causes a drop in economic activity
which will be restored once new connections are made
I would have thought everything would go back to normal a year from now
But we’re still seeing these closures in China that reduce the supply of goods for production in other parts of the world
But I think we’ll have at least another year of low growth
Pope Francis met with groups from two Italian dioceses at midday on Saturday in the Paul VI Hall
faithful from the Diocese of Alessandria and confirmandi - young people who are preparing for confirmation or who have recently been confirmed - from the Diocese of Spoleto-Norcia
The Pope first spoke to the group from Alessandria
while mentioning the many young people from Spoleto-Norcia who are "like so many flowers that are blooming" and with them one experiences "a sense of having the whole family" together
The occasion of the visit of pilgrims from Alessandria was the 450th anniversary of the death of Saint Pius V
who made courageous choices," said the Pope
the style of Church governance has changed
and "the backbone of his life was faith," affirming how his teachings are important also for today's world
they invite us to be "seekers of truth," and Jesus is Truth in a way that is not only universal but also communal and personal
saying the challenge is to experience that search for truth today in the daily life of the Church and of Christian communities
And this search can only take place through personal and communal discernment starting from the Word of God
Hearing the Word helps a community grow in the knowledge of Jesus
and in the community life that must be woven from bonds of love and sharing
The Word "comes alive particularly in the celebration of the Eucharist."
“Saint Pius V worked to reform the Church's Liturgy
and after four centuries the Second Vatican Council implemented further reform to better adhere to the needs of today's world
Much has been said in recent years about the Liturgy
But the greatest effort must be made to ensure that the Eucharistic celebration actually becomes the source of community life.”
bringing us into the life of Christ and then calling us to act concretely for others
and stressed how the Acts of the Apostles give us back "the image of a Church on a journey
that finds in prayer gatherings the basis and the impetus for missionary action." Regarding the first Christians
we read how they were persevering in the teaching of the apostles
And to the faithful of the Diocese of Alessandria
engaged in a journey of synodal journey of pastoral renewal
“I hope that all communities will devote the necessary effort to advancing along the path of a pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are
'Mere administration' can no longer be enough
let us be 'permanently in a state of mission'.”
Pope Francis' called for this synodal journey to instill a "growth in fraternal communion" among the Bishop
invoking the Lord's blessing for every success
Addressing the young pilgrims from the Diocese of Spoleto-Norcia
the Pope explained how the Sacrament of Confirmation is also a journey
"because it re-relives the experience of Jesus' first disciples." To their names
The Pope then asked the young people if they remembered the date of their baptism,
It is especially important for you who are confirmed or those to be confirmed
The Christian life is a house that is built on the foundation of Baptism
The foundation is always the same: Baptism
That is why it is important to remember the day we were baptized
Pope Francis recalled how the young people come from earthquake-damaged territories
so they understand the importance of what it means to have a solid house
He also responded to their request to bless a stone brought to him from the ancient Abbey of St
so that it may become "a symbol of its reconstruction."
saying "I bless each one of you so that you may become a living stone to build up the Christian community: a living stone in the family
To be living stones: this is possible with the power of the Holy Spirit
who in Confirmation confirms you as baptized
children of God and members of the Church."

'Heavy thunderstorms' cited in latest course change
Milan-San Remo is always a long day in the saddle but the rescheduled 2020 Monument got six kilometres longer thanks to another change to avoid Alessandria
Race organisers RCS Sport noted that "The route had to be modified because of the heavy thunderstorms that struck Alessandria in recent days
this year's race will be the longest course of 111 editions of Milan-San Remo
That meant a first reroute for Milan-San Remo, lengthening the course to 299km plus a 10km neutral ride out from central Milan, adding the climbs of the Niella Belbo and four-kilometre Colle di Nava before rejoining the classic route at Imperia.
The newest change adds a six-kilometre detour to avoid Alessandria, bringing the total distance to 305km in addition to the neutral 10km stretch out of Milan.
The UCI rules impose a maximum distance for elite men's races of 280km for the Olympic Games and World Championships, 240km for Continental and National championships and 200km for 1.Pro, 1.1 and 1.2-ranked races, but the Pro Cycling Council is left to decide how long WorldTour races can be.
Milan-San Remo organisers already received an exception to reduce the team sizes to six riders in order to allow two Italian Pro Continental squads - Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec and Bardiani CSF Faizané - to be added while the start list remains inside the maximum 176 riders for WorldTour races.

in the italian city of alessandria, sicilian artist gue has painted an eye-popping ‘playground’ that plays with perceptions of space and shape. as part of the urban regeneration and redevelopment of the city’s carlo carrà park, the muralist has turned a basketball court into a geometric labyrinth of lines and color
‘the idea was born from the possibility of being able to cross the field’s space,’ gue describes
‘and to stay inside the composition and change the perception of shapes through the game’s movement.’
all photos by ugo galassi
gue has painted the court in a palette of colors that reflects the character of a court
‘the choice of colors was motivated by a direct reference to the world of sport,’ he says
‘I chose the color samples used in basketball courts
combining them and adding personal variants.’ the lines delineating point scoring sections are marked out in white
and cool grey tones come together to create a graphic composition that fills the large part of the court
‘it was important to consider the schemes of the designated areas
but at the same time it was necessary to feel free to interact with shapes and colors.’ curved lines and shapes create a striking visual rhythm that highlights the movement within the space
amplifying the action and leaving a visual trace of the hard-fought matches played on the ‘playground’

On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the birth of Carlo Carrà (Quargnento 1881 - Milan 1966)
Alessandria pays homage to the famous painter
it will be the Quadreria del Broletto in Palatium Vetus that will host until October 3
that the artist created from 1898 to 1965.Carrà 140
Works from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria and from private collections in Alessandria
is promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria and realized by the investee company Palazzo del Governatore srl
On display are 44 works, including oils, drawings and etchings, from the Foundation’s art collection and partly from collectors in Alessandria: Carlo Carrà’s artistic career is witnessed in the exhibition at every stage from Divisionism to the Futurist experience
from the Metaphysical parenthesis to the figurative tradition
and to the landscapes painted in many places of the peninsula
The exhibition is developed following a circular arrangement that intends to retrace the phases of the artist’s production
typical of all his production and particularly of his last period
An iconic work of the exhibition is the 1914 collage Lacerba and Bottle
completed upon his return from Paris after learning about the Cubism of Picasso and Braque
Other works on display include the Great frieze with dancing putti from the first decade of the twentieth century; Punta della dogana from 1948
the first painting acquired by the Foundation in 2004; a series of engravings never exhibited in which the themes dearest to the artist return; and
coming in part from private collectors in Alessandria
including Campagna di Versilia dating from 1965
“Eight years after the recovery of Palatium Vetus,” says President Luciano Mariano
“the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria returns to organize in the Quadreria del Broletto an art exhibition
dedicated to the great artist from Alessandria
Carlo Carrà with the aim of giving value and knowledge to the protagonists of the cultural scenario of the territory in which the Foundation operates
in line with the objectives it has always pursued also in building the art collection that is a fundamental part of its own identity
The exhibition represents the first chapter of a wide-ranging project in which the Foundation will gradually make the works of its collection
composed mainly of the works of artists in various ways linked to the territory
and along a path that unravels from the 15th to the 21st century.”

A new report by Greenpeace Italia denounces the presence of toxic compounds produced by Solvay Solexis also in the Turin area and other parts of Piedmont
and not only those around Spinetta Marengo
the Alessandria district where the multinational Solvay Solexis
This is the conclusion of a new report by Greenpeace Italy
which denounces the presence of perfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water in Piedmont
While in the province of Alessandria there are high concentrations of PFOA (considered carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer
and whose production has been banned for 10 years)
in the metropolitan area of Turin there are traces of the compound cC6O4
produced in Italy "exclusively" by Solvay Solexis
which recently changed its name to Syensqo
125,000 Piedmontese drank carcinogenic substances over a long period of time without knowing that they were carcinogenic
"It was thought that PFAS pollution in Italy only affected the Veneto or Alessandria regions," says Giuseppe Ungherese
"areas where there were or still are industrial plants producing these dangerous molecules
In recent months we have shown that the problem also affects many areas of Lombardy
Today we are forced to denounce that even in Piedmont there are other areas where the problem is significant
Greenpeace Italy has asked all the managers of Piedmont's drinking water networks and the health authorities (ASL) for access to the results of analyses carried out to detect PFAS in drinking water
there are still no national limits for these substances
which have been considered dangerous since 2001
Most managers and local health authorities have never looked for the compounds in drinking water
even though Piedmont is home to Italy's only producer
The data presented come mainly from two provinces: Alessandria and Turin
Solvay Solexis has been discharging the effluent from its industrial collector into the Bormida river
since acquiring the chemical centre in 2002
Solvay Solexis had already been warned in 2007 that its industrial effluent was releasing PFAS and damaging the environment
The alarm had been raised by the European Union
had identified the Po as the river with the highest level of PFAS pollution in Europe
Professor Michael MacLachlan wrote an email to the company: “From our studies we believe that the most likely source of PFOA emissions into the river is your industry
we urge you to investigate.” Solvay Solexis replied that other industries were discharging into the River Po and that there were no limits on these substances
we have had to wait until 2021 to have parameters on discharge levels in Piedmont
despite the fact that Arpa Piemonte (the regional authority on the environmental protection) started monitoring these compounds in 2008
together with the National Research Council (CNR)
the body that discovered the largest PFAS contamination in Veneto in 2013
Thanks to the cooperation of the local health authority in Alessandria
Greenpeace was able to re-establish the monitoring of drinking water in Alessandria
If the chemical plant has had no impact in the area close to the production site
has not spared several municipalities along the Scrivia river: Alzano Scrivia
recorded a PFOA presence above the limit of 100 nanograms per litre set by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS)
It is a pity that none of these municipalities has been contacted by the Arpa laboratory
which was informed of the presence of cC6O4 in the drinking water network in June 2020
The municipality was contacted by ARPA and ASL
and two days later it was decided to close the main well
Greenpeace asks: how is it that in these five municipalities on the Scrivia
ASL waited until 7 August 2023 (from November 2019) to change the supply point
seven days after the NGO's request for data
which can also be consulted via a map with yellow and green dots indicating the monitoring carried out over the years
The water network manager for the province of Turin
the Società metropolitana acque Torino (SMAT)
provided the data obtained in 2023 (following research begun five years earlier)
and its analysis shows that 14 municipalities tested positive for the compound cC6O4
it is possible to draw a kind of map that goes from Bardonecchia to Ivrea
with values that reach 66 nanograms in Cintano
As in the case of the five towns in the province of Alessandria
where there was a lack of communication from the authorities
no document sent by SMAT to the contaminated centres has been delivered to Greenpeace for these 14 municipalities
the entry “PFAS sum” appeared on the SMAT website dedicated to the analysis of compounds monitored in drinking water
as the operator has been producing data on PFAS since 2018
the year in which it involved the chemistry department of the University of Turin in the search for these emerging pollutants
which were then found in several municipalities
The province of Turin is already aware of cC6O4
after ARPA Piemonte found traces of the compound in the leachate of the Barricalla landfill in the municipality of Collegno
tens of kilometres from the production centre of the multinational Solvay Solexis
which has always denied selling PFAS to research centres and universities
Contrary to the dossier on drinking water in Lombardy
published in May 2002 with data supplied by the bodies involved
in Piedmont Greenpeace has received negative replies from almost all the managers
There are two reasons for this: on the one hand
the entry into force of the limits for PFAS in water is not expected until January 2026 and
the decision taken in 2019 to monitor only the Alessandria area
In the 2019 health monitoring programme (Prisa)
the region includes an appendix from ARPA Nord Ovest (Turin)
which recommends that only the area affected by the actual contamination
the administrations and local health authorities have avoided testing for carcinogenic compounds in Piedmont's drinking water for years
Greenpeace carried out its own sampling in July 2023
indicated the presence of PFOS in the municipality of Galliate

Alessandria Trigila isn’t the first female to opt for a construction career
but at the age of 25 she has already achieved the position of project coordinator with Clifford Restoration/Clifford Masonry
Being young and a female manager in the predominantly male dominated construction industry has more than a few challenges
especially when your father runs the companies
growing up in a construction family and accompanying her father on weekends to construction sites and then working summers for the companies
in a variety of roles during high school and university
did lay the groundwork for her future career
"I was fortunate enough to have the advantage of being dragged along to jobsites since the age of five," says Trigila
stressing she didn’t actually go on construction sites
but would listen to her father discuss issues with employees and clients as they stood on sidewalk or in a nearby restaurant
she cleaned and sorted materials in the company yard or updated suppliers’ lists and then was given more responsibility working with the safety department designing safety manuals
she worked her way up to project administrator assistant before graduating from Queen’s University in Kingston
"It (the industry) always fascinated me
but I wasn’t sure it was something I would be interested in long term."
Shortly after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Economics in June 2014
she applied and was offered a customer service position with a bank
asked if she wanted to enter project management
But Trigila says she didn’t receive any preferential treatment in the initial hiring process and hasn’t received any since
her father told her to submit a resume and then interviewed her before offering her a position
but fair as he is with any of the other staff members
and in the end I appreciated that I was treated like any other applicant."
To dispel any suggestions or hints of favouritism or nepotism
the senior Trigila made it clear she "would have to work twice as hard and put in double the effort."
Trigila worked alongside with her father and other senior project managers
but was gradually handed management of the restoration of the south tower of Toronto’s Bishop Strachan School
Other projects have followed including her most recent one at the Church of the Redeemer in Toronto where she has managed the restoration of its bell tower and some of the church walls
"I learn something new every day and utilize everything as best as I can to ensure a project runs as smooth as possible."
Although she can rely on her father and other senior company personnel for advice
Trigila says she — and any other project manager — have to think and make decisions quickly on the job site
"At some point you can’t keep saying ‘I’ll get back to you on that’."
she studied Construction Project Management at Toronto’s George Brown College at nights and some Saturdays
completing the program in a short 10-month period
"It was a great environment to listen to stories from job roles I had never assumed
It also gave me an opportunity to work with people from different fields and background during group projects and assignments
is that it put me on par with my co-workers."
and the leadership training she received at Queen’s University
has helped her cope with the day-to-day job challenges
Trigila also draws inspiration from other "construction female role models," specifically referring to Dawn Tattle
"I would encourage not only young women
but young people in general to consider a career in construction
dynamic industry to be involved in and the opportunities are endless."
Not only has it given her the opportunity to restore some of "Ontario’s hallmark addresses," it has also allowed her to give back to the community
Early this past summer she was the project manager of the "Gift Box"
a Faith- Alliance initiative designed to raise awareness about human trafficking
The Clifford companies donated all the labour
materials and installed the large walk-in structure at a downtown Toronto church
The outside was decorated to be a wrapped gift
catching people’s attention and representing how people are lured into human trafficking
while the inside depicts its harsh realities
"I found it (being involved) one of the most rewarding projects as it was a labour of love to help raise awareness and help in the fight to eliminate human trafficking."

Napoleon’s idea was to march on Milan (where the French entered in early June) and immediately seek a clash with the Austrians to cut their lines between Genoa and Milan
the French managed to inflict a first defeat on the Austrians
The clash took place near the Bormida River
because it was a key area for communications: the French seemed destined for defeat
but on the afternoon of June 14 the arrival of reinforcements led by General Louis Charles Desaix (who died during the battle
struck by a bullet) enabled the French to launch an unexpected counterattack
Today there are still many places that tell the story of the Battle of Marengo
in and around Alexandria: the clash has entered into Napoleonic myth (so much so that it is considered Napoleon’s favorite battle) and can be retraced through numerous testimonies in the area
a 19th-century residence in Spinetta Marengo
multimedia materials and more to document the clash of June 14
The entrance to the museum is the "Pyramid," which commemorates Napoleonic events
Napoleon returned to Alexandria to celebrate the battle before the world
and the leader appeared before a crowd of dignitaries and generals in the same uniform he wore on June 14 five years earlier
Napoleon wanted a great pyramid to be erected on the plain of Marengo
along with the sacrifice of General Desaix and his men
would eternally commemorate his victory: “Let it rise from stone to stone
as on that of Egypt.” Its construction began immediately and work was in the home stretch
but it was destroyed with the return of the Austrians to the area
The City of Alexandria built a new cast-iron Pyramid in 2009
which has become a symbol of the museum and Napoleonic Alexandria
A tour of the sites of the Battle of Marengo can begin at the bridge over the Bormida River
rebuilt in the Napoleonic period over the Romanesque bridge built by Benedictine monks in the 14th century
The Austrian army passed through here before the clash against the French army
At the bridgehead stands the giant plane tree that tradition says was planted in 1800 by Napoleon to honor the approximately 2,000 soldiers who died on the day of the battle and the 10,000 wounded on both sides
The plant is over 200 years old and about 40 meters tall (its foliage covers an area of about 400 square meters in spring-summer)
The tree is owned by the City of Alexandria and protected by the local superintendency
one of the most monumental in its historic center
In 1804 it appears that Napoleon via stayed during his trip to be crowned emperor in Paris
the palace is said to have hosted Napoleon’s nephew
at the beginning of the Second War of Independence: in the same palace
General François Certain de Canrobert had taken lodging with the General Staff of the French army that would support the Italians in the war against Austria
the Citadel of Alexandria constitutes one of the grandest European monuments in the field of permanent fortification of the 18th century
one of the few still standing and certainly one of the best preserved in Europe
It is the only lowland fortress built by the Savoy family in the 18th century and is the only European fortress still set in its original environmental context
after the triumphs of the Battle of Marengo and his ascension to the imperial throne of France
decided to expand and restore the fortress and surround the city with new defenses and eight new fortifications in order to create a large logistical base intended to support the operations of the French army deployed in northern Italy
urban development was planned in the built-up area of Marengo
the location and effectiveness of the modern fortifications made the Citadel one of the most spectacular fortresses in the empire and the richest arsenal in all of Europe
Napoleon wanted to make the Citadel a kind of “eastern gateway” to France
In Alexandria you can also visit the Civic Museum
located in a wing of the Palazzo Cuttica di Cassine (visit the Napoleonic rooms
and admire the armchair of Empress Maria Luigia
and art rooms with the collection of Giovanni Migliara and the frescoes of the Arthurian cycle)
Other Napoleonic routes pass by Novi Ligure where the Napoleonic battle of 1799 was fought
Napoleon Bonaparte’s command on June 14
from where the Marengo plain can be seen and which is depicted in prints of the time
on the country road known as the "Red Road," so called because of the blood shed by the opposing cavalry that crossed it on the fateful June 14
AC Milan 5 Alessandria 0 (6-0 agg): Mihajlovic's men march on to RomeIt has been 13 years since AC Milan last won the Coppa Italia
but Sinisa Mihajlovic's side are through to the 2016 final.AC Milan ended third-tier Alessandria's Coppa Italia dreams to reach the final after a 5-0 win on Tuesday
Having won the first leg 1-0 courtesy of Mario Balotelli's penalty
the in-form Serie A side completed the job at San Siro as Jeremy Menez and Alessio Romagnoli scored two apiece
While there was no dispute about Menez's measured finish and tap-in
Romagnoli's opening close-range goal – his first for the club – raised suspicions of offside and the linesman did initially appear to indicate as much
Alessandria provided a spirited second-half showing
but still succumbed to another Romagnoli goal and Balotelli's cool finish
and will return to Lega Pro action sitting just three points off a play-off spot
Milan have not won the Coppa Italia since 2003
but will seek to end that wait when they face either city rivals Inter or Juventus – who meet on Wednesday – in the Rome final in May
The result extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 matches
with Sinisa Mihajlovic's men having lost only once in 2016
Keisuke Honda missed a glorious chance to put the hosts ahead inside seven minutes
the Japan international somehow side-footing over the empty net from eight yards after Juraj Kucka's run and pass had taken goalkeeper Gianmarco Vannucchi out of the equation.
Genoa and Spezia on their way to the last four and proved they would be no pushovers this time out either
with Christian Abbiati forced to deny Vedran Celjak from a tight angle.
when Menez controlled Honda's lofted pass with his chest and steered an effort into the bottom-left corner with 20 minutes gone
The tie was effectively over just four minutes later as Romagnoli touched home from two yards out following a corner
with Alessandria's calls for offside ultimately dismissed
There was further punishment to come before the break
Menez – who only returned from a back injury last month – putting the finishing touch on a well-worked move
Still the visitors refused to give up the fight in the second half
pressing forward and seeing Manuel Fischnaller head narrowly wide from a free-kick
The underdogs came even closer to a consolation soon after
but despite Michele Marconi's shot going through Abbiati's legs
Mattia De Sciglio got back to clear off the line
And a fourth arrived at the other end 10 minutes from time when Romagnoli forced the ball over the line following a corner
while Balotelli raced away to slot in another at the death as Mihajlovic – four times a winner of the competition as a player – led his men to the final with considerable comfort
