it is a great honor to join you today as we honor the courageous troops who stormed the beaches in Anzio and Nettuno on January 22
The Allied forces included soldiers from many nations
which vanquished the Nazi threat to the United States
We are also mindful that every one of the 7,845 grave markers and 3,095 names on the wall represent an individual
and a community that sacrificed for our freedom
They were people such as Private Vincent Ranucci of Massachusetts
Ranucci was born in 1916 and was the oldest of nine children
He joined the Army in 1942 and landed with the 68th Coast Artillery Regiment in Anzio
He was killed in action shortly thereafter when his unit was attacked by German aircraft
including a sister who never had a chance to get to know him and a nephew named after him
gathered near his childhood home in Waterford to dedicate a hero square in his honor
Ranucci was only one of an estimated 43,000 Allied casualties in the Anzio campaign
including around 7,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice
which is cared for so ably by the dedicated staff of the American Battle Monuments Commission
it is difficult for us to imagine the terror and the horror of battle
It includes the lines: “The going’s slow on Anzio
Praise be to God for this captured sod that rich with blood does seep
like butchered swine; and hell is six feet deep
That death awaits there’s no debate; no triumph will we reap
We know that the sacrifices made in Anzio and Nettuno resulted in an unprecedented period of peace in the transatlantic area
We know these sacrifices were the genesis of a strong alliance between the United States and Italy
one forged upon the common values shared by our peoples
We know that the United States and Italy are more secure and more prosperous when we work together
The resilience shown by those who fought in the Anzio campaign serves as a timeless inspiration for all of us
we can find the courage to persevere and the strength to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds

BY DAVID VEENSTRA
PHOENIX — Mesa’s Falcon Field Airport has finished the reconstruction of its Anzio Ramp
Construction began on the project in August of 2024 and a crew applied the finishing touches by applying paint markings to the public ramp on Dec
The Arizona Department of Transportation funded the nearly $600,000 reconstruction via an Airport Development Reimbursable Grant Agreement
named after World War II’s Battle of Anzio
was first built in 1992 and was in bad shape prior to the improvements
the ramp’s Pavement Condition Index was graded at 51
indicating its “poor condition.”
A new aircraft tie-down position was also built while two more are planned for the future
The renovations are now compliant with current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards, the city said in a press release
The city said the improvements will make operations more efficient while continuing to grow the airport’s business
“The completion of the Anzio Ramp reconstruction is a noteworthy achievement for our airport,” Airport Director at Falcon Field Airport Corinne Nystrom said in a press release
“This long-awaited upgrade not only modernizes our infrastructure but also strengthens the foundation for the businesses and operations that rely on us
It’s a testament to our commitment to progress
We greatly appreciate the financial support provided by the Arizona Department of Transportation

Volunteers with the non-profit Stories Behind the Stars (www.storiesbehindthestars.org) have written memorials honoring the fifty-eight PA soldiers who died in the mining and sinking of LST-422
One of LST-422’s fallen was from Berks County: PFC Edwin C
Strausser had four younger siblings: brothers Alfred and Carl B
His father was a veteran of World War I who served in Company E of the 304th Ammunition Train
He supported the Protestant household as a carpenter for Hoffman Company
Strausser attended Fleetwood Area High School where he participated on the school’s soccer team and the athletic council
Strausser registered for the draft in Hamburg
and worked at the Fleetwood Metal Body Company
Strausser enlisted in the Army at Allentown
Strausser was assigned to the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion which was activated at Camp Gordon
Chemical mortars were developed as incendiary shells
the 83rd was deployed to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations on April 29
The battalion supported a variety of units including the Rangers
the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the 2nd and 41st British Commandos
the Rangers and members of the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion landed on Sicily while facing heavy enemy fire on mined and wired beaches
The 83rd was able to unload their mortars in the heavy surf and were able to silence the enemy firing positions
the task was the liberation of Italy which began on September 9

LST-422 attempted to land at the Allied-held beachhead at Anzio on January 26
High waves postponed the landing and forced the LST to anchor for the night at 1:00 AM
Gale force winds and the tide caused LST-422 to drift into a submerged minefield at 5:20 AM about twelve miles offshore
A mine’s explosion tore a fifty-foot hole in the ship’s hull and detonated munitions and fuel in the LST’s hold
Vehicles that were secured on decks became dislodged and pinned soldiers
Many men were trapped by the troop compartment’s jammed door as the ship sank
Many soldiers who entered the water succumbed to hypothermia or drowned in the frigid water
Rescue efforts by other landing craft and minesweepers were hampered by German mine explosions and an air raid
killing thirty men from Landing Craft Infantry 32
Minesweepers pulled 150 men out of the water from LST-422 and LSI-32
The captain and crew of the LST-422 finally abandoned the ship around 6:00 AM
Total losses were 454 Americans and twenty-nine British sailors
Fifty-three members survived and returned to duty
Thirty-seven of the recovered deceased were given a burial at sea
Fifty-four of the recovered deceased were interred in U.S
Three-hundred and sixty-two deceased are unrecovered or unidentified
Strausser was one of the soldiers aboard LST-422 who were killed in action on January 26
He was memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno
A cenotaph was placed in his honor at Friedens Church Cemetery
Strausser posthumously received the Purple Heart

Q: You have nearly three decades of broadcast journalism experience and now lead diversity and inclusion efforts across NBCUniversal Local. How did you transition from leading newsrooms to your current role, and has DE&I always been an area of interest?
A: “Diversity, equity and inclusion is part of my DNA. As a Black man, I’ve used every opportunity available to me to make DE&I a business priority and an essential daily practice in every meeting and in every decision. From helping newsrooms improve the way communities of color are portrayed in the news to creating programs and pipelines to hire and retain more diverse talent, DE&I has always been and continues to be my North Star."
“My current role reflects the work that I did unofficially for years at NBCU Local – advising the stations on DE&I strategies."
“Now, instead of being in the newsroom every day overseeing our news programs, I look across all of our stations and regional sports networks to analyze what our audiences are seeing – and most importantly not seeing – so I can help the stations better integrate DE&I and make sustainable, long-term changes.”
Q: Mentorship is another common theme in your professional journey. You’ve mentored and coached numerous colleagues and journalists throughout your career. Why is mentorship so important to you?
A: “I am where I am thanks to my work ethic and the many people who have mentored, sponsored, and championed me throughout my career. To clarify, there is a difference between all three roles.”
Q: What is an important lesson you’ve learned in your career that has influenced the way you lead?
Q: What changes would you like to see in the media industry?
A: “I am encouraged by the growing number of diverse people in leadership, decision-making, and hiring roles in our industry. Having those diverse voices, ideas, and thoughts at the table means a lot."
“As it relates to inclusion, to have people of color at the table and not value our thoughts and opinions is performative. Diversity is a long-term plan that is implemented over months and years. Inclusion has to happen in the moment, right now, today. Inclusion is what we can work on today to have immediate impact."
“I challenge everyone to identify daily opportunities to include someone different, unlike yourself in a meeting, in a conversation, in decision-making. My hope is that we understand the difference between diversity and inclusion, and we work on both simultaneously.”

on the 70th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Anzio
LIFE.com presents a series of Silk’s photographs — many of them never published before — that graphically illustrate the grueling stalemate
Roughly 7,000 Allied troops were killed in those four months
Another 36,000 were wounded or missing in action
The Germans suffered 40,000 casualties (5,000 killed) while more than 4,000 surrendered and were taken prisoner
NOTE: According to Silk’s typewritten captions for his photos
slide #16 in the gallery above features a soldier
displaying “things that men in M Company don’t like: Dextrose tablets — taste terrible
almost invariably thrown away; Barbasol — they don’t like brushless shaving cream
say it sticks in the razor; Fleetwood cigarettes — typical of the cheap cigarettes that come in the K rations; processed American cheese — gets very tiresome when eaten day after day
“The men complain,” Silk noted
“that the cheap [cigarette] brands are distributed just to please the manufacturers who want to keep their trade names going
and that the good brands are taken by the ‘Rear Echelon Boys’ before they reach the front.”
worn paper Silk used to type his notes and that survives
one can clearly discern that someone — very likely a censor in the U.S
War Department — crossed out those particular observations with a red pencil
the notion of “American boys” complaining bitterly about crappy tobacco
processed cheese and other indignities at the front didn’t quite fit the image the War Department’s Bureau of Public Relations wished to present to the folks back home

The 37-year-old was known to the police for activities related to the illegal drug market
There is a deep mystery surrounding the murder that took place yesterday evening
The hypothesis that the killing of Cosimo Ciminiello was clearly connected to the division of drug dealing areas
but it does not appear to be the only one either
had no criminal record that clearly linked him to the world of drug dealing
The killer waited for him under the portico of a public housing building near Parco Palatucci and there killed him with a .22 caliber pistol shot fired at close range to the chest
but it will be up to the coroner to establish whether those injuries were caused by blows received by the man before being killed or whether they are the consequence of the fall after the fatal shot
leaving the victim on the ground in a pool of blood and
The police officers from the Anzio police station and their colleagues from the Rome Flying Squad rushed to the scene
There is little doubt that it was a proper ambush
designed to leave the man with no chance of escape
The shot was clearly fired to kill and not to injure
as often happens when the attacker simply wants to leave a warning to the victim or the group to which he belongs
The investigations are therefore focusing on the witnesses to establish what Ciminiello was doing in Via Lucania
Why was he in front of that building and who had he visited
the investigators from the Flying Squad are carrying out investigations coordinated by the Velletri prosecutor's office

The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) commemorated the 80th anniversary of Operation Shingle at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno
to honor the service and sacrifice of the U.S
Armed Forces and their Allies during historic military operations in World War II
and ABMC Executive Director for Operations Edmund Ryan
Sicily-Rome American Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 7,800 American military members
most of whom died during the liberation of Sicily
in the landings in the Salerno area and the fighting northward
and the air and naval support throughout the region
more than 3,000 names of those who went missing in these operations are etched in the white marble walls of the cemetery’s chapel
In the run-up to Pope Francis’ visit on All Souls Day (November 2nd) to the American military cemetery of Nettuno near Anzio in central Italy
veteran from the 1944 battle of Anzio relived his memories of that bloody campaign
John Shirley is one of the last few surviving veterans who took part in the battle around Anzio and the campaign to liberate Rome from the Germans
Shirley is a much-decorated war hero and wrote a book about his war-time experiences entitled “I remember.” He was interviewed by Susy Hodges and began by describing how he came to write his book
[ Audio Embed Listen to this interview with John Shirley:]
The Sicily-Rome American military cemetery near Anzio in central Italy is the final resting place for nearly 8,000 members of the U.S
military who gave their lives for their country during the Second World War
the American cemetery is located just outside Anzio where U.S
troops and their allies landed in 1944 at the start of the campaign to liberate Rome and expel the Germans from Italy
Shirley told us that his very “first day of combat” was on a spring day in 1944 when the Allied troops broke out of their beachhead at Anzio and met fierce resistance from German troops
He was transported close to the frontline by “a battle sled” and recalled how they then crawled on their stomachs through a field of grain with this “real big battle” raging around them
Shirley described the boom of the heavy artillery and spoke of how the machine guns were firing “just above our heads.”
It was at this time that Shirley witnessed for the first time a man killed in action
“My squadron sergeant hit a mine and it blew him up into the air 4 or 5 feet right in front of me,” he recalled
Asked whether he had a religious faith and if it sustained him during his war-time experiences
Shirley said as a Christian he prayed and all the others as well … “everyone was praying.”
Shirley said if he could have been at the American cemetery near Anzio during the Pope’s visit he would have “thanked him very much (for coming there) and for remembering “all the people who died” in that battle around Anzio
“Lots of my friends were killed” but “I feel lucky to have survived,” he concluded.

A formidable front line in Anzio: Camille Thurman (left)
as the sun was beginning to set over the charming fishing port of Anzio on the West Coast of Italy
The picture-postcard setting was a luxurious outdoor dinner-theater facing the Tyrrhenian Sea called L’Abbraccio (The Embrace)

The players were a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars representing the U.S
including four superb tenor saxophonists: Poland’s Sylwester Ostrowski
America’s Camille Thurman and Holland’s Alexander Beets
The invited audience of about 100 die-hard jazz fans
friends of the band and journalists were elegantly dressed for a gala evening
It was kind of a miracle that it happened at all
Jazz on a summer evening didn’t use to be this unusual
But “A Night in Anzio,” a one-night-only international jazz party organized by Ostrowski to celebrate the return of live jazz to Europe
live jazz might be ripped away from us again
In our fragile après-pandemic environment
in which virus variants threaten new lockdowns
the ability to stage live musical events may well be fleeting
There is other live jazz happening in Italy and France this month
new restrictions on live music clubs and events were announced in France
There was a justifiable sense among the guests that they might be witnessing a jazz Brigadoon
if not for 100 years as in the Lerner and Lowe musical
then for what might still be a long stretch
“Tonight’s event is very important to me.” His scheduled European tour with Bobby Watson
Billy Harper and Freddie Hendrix had been canceled due to the pandemic
“I decided to produce this jazz party to involve very special people I wanted to play with to celebrate jazz and life and friendship
Ostrowski attracted top European and American talent to the Anzio event: veteran trumpeter Freddie Hendrix (from the U.S.); two guitarists
Jakub “Mizer” Mizeracki; pianist Albert Bover (Spain)
known for her work with Jon Batiste in the Late Show with Stephen Colbert orchestra; and Netherlands-based American drummer Owen Hart Jr
Steadfastly loyal to his Polish sound and video crew, Ostrowski trucked them in from his hometown of Szczecin City — along with all the sound equipment and a Yamaha grand piano. The journey, nearly 1,100 miles, took three days. The result was worth it: a thoroughly professional video of the concert with multi-camera views, drone shots, and sparkling sound, can currently be viewed at Jazzcorner’s Facebook page
Ostrowski’s “A Night In Anzio,” a straightahead hard-bopper written for the occasion
started the concert on a note of high energy
shifted the group into even higher gear with her brisk rendition of “My Shining Hour.”
It was in the middle of Hendrix’s “We Are The Jazz Brigade,” written for Sylwester’s group in which Hendrix plays trumpet
that the heavens opened briefly for a passing downpour
sending the musicians and audience fleeing as the crew scrambled to protect the piano and other instruments
featuring his composition “Nostalgia,” possibly the most noir-ish tenor saxophone solo since “Harlem Nocturne.” Butman’s rendition burned with raw emotionalism and brilliant
resulting in the first of the evening’s several showstoppers
Thurman began her high-spirited samba arrangement of the classic r&b song “Our Day Will Come” with some breathtaking scat-singing to drummer Hart’s impressive Brazilian groove
Twin tenor solos by Butman and Thurman followed
Kenny Barron’s high-speed “Voyage” featured the two guitarists
the mellow-toned Bruno contrasting nicely with the jazz-rock style of the younger Mizeracki
The Dutch tenor ace Beets then led a homage to one of his main inspirations
with a stirringly soulful “Sunny,” ratcheting up the intensity with each modulation
came with the four tenor players forming a front line “saxophone summit” for the deeply swinging Dexter Gordon classic “Cheesecake,” inspired by the 1978 live recording featuring Gordon and Johnny Griffin at Carnegie Hall
An encore of Bird’s “Now’s The Time” was a fitting closer
Tomorrow will almost certainly bring more live-streamed and hybrid musical events as the jazz world continues to adapt to the evolving COVID situation
“This is one of the great gifts that Coltrane gave us — he gave us a key to the cosmos in this recording,” says John McLaughlin

23 veterans who served together during the World War II Operation Shingle on the Anzio Beachhead in Italy came together on the USS Yorktown for what will likely be their final reunion
soldiers landed on the west coast of Italy at Anzio
and took the Germans completely by surprise. While not one of the most well-known battles of World War II
22 Americans were awarded the Medal of Honor for their valor during the battle at Anzio—the most of any single battle in World War II
The primary objective of the landing at Anzio was to establish a beachhead
and then quickly drive inland to cut off and disrupt the highways German troops used for resupply
But it was far more complex than expected. Hitler was determined to fend off the Americans and Allied forces
It took four grueling months until the area was secured by the Allied forces. This battle was critical to the ultimate liberation of Italy
Allied forces suffered nearly 87,000 casualties: 700 killed
and another 44,000 were hospitalized from various non-battle injuries
The final reunion of these brave men comes just days after the 70th anniversary of the Victory in Europe (May 8
1945). The Anzio Beachhead veterans group has long included not only the men who fought on the front lines
but the nurses who supported them during the battle
In addition to 22 veterans of the front lines of battle
FL also came to the reunion on the USS Yorktown. She is also a veteran; she was a member of the nurse corps who served bravely even under threat of enemy fire. She remembers six or seven of her fellow nurses who were in fact killed by enemy fire during the fierce battle at Anzio

was waiting anxiously with fellow soldiers
Army’s WWII landing barges of the U.S
this young Army Private was ordered into the water first
Jim described it as being “waist high” as he stormed ashore dodging bullets and wounded men falling around him
Anzio Beach was a stretch of sand 15 miles long and 7 miles deep
The infamous battle of Anzio lasted from January 22
The British 1st Infantry Division landed north of Anzio
while the 3rd Army Infantry Division landed south of town
history books say that “36,000 men landed
securing a beachhead 2-3 miles deep.”
Seriously wounded in the assault by German machine-gun fire in his knee and lower leg
Jim earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for bravery under fire
It took 18 months recovery and rehabilitation time in military hospitals before being honorably discharged and sent home
using the GI Bill benefits to get his education
he got a job at WLOL in Minneapolis in 1945
trying to break into the movie business as a stuntman or actor
He dropped the “u” in his family name and became James Arness
playing the role of Loretta Young’s brother
John Wayne became his close friend and mentor
James Arness signed a contract with Wayne’s company
in the early 50s and played in four films with him
They shared the same straight-forward manner
Arness was offered the part of Dodge City’s Marshall Matt Dillon in “Gunsmoke,” an adult TV western
His agent and friends advised him to turn it down
Duke told him to “take the part,” saying it would be a good opportunity for him to learn his craft
Wayne promised Jim he’d introduce him on the first TV show
and Arness “could take it from there.” True to his word
this is a new western TV show called ‘Gunsmoke,’ and there is only one man who could play the part
He’s a young fella and I’m proud to present James Arness as Marshall Matt Dillon in ‘Gunsmoke.’ You’ll get used to him like you got used to me all these years.”
The show lasted for 20 years before it was cancelled by TV executives
and is enjoyed daily on the Encore network by thousands of new and old fans
but he is most remembered as Marshall Matt Dillon
“Gunsmoke” had good writers and the perfect cast who worked well together
and liked one another both onstage and off
Beautiful actress Amanda Blake played “Miss Kitty Russell,” who ran the boarding house saloon
where she took care of “her girls.” Fans wrote in and asked if Matt and Miss Kitty were ever going to marry
Arness and the writers thought it would make a whole different story
This also kept the home audiences guessing and watching each show
Milburn Stone played “Doc Adams,” a no-nonsense
doctor who was expected to patch up every bullet hole and deliver every baby
Actor Dennis Weaver was a sympathetic “Chester,” the Marshall’s stiff-legged deputy who limped his way around the dirt streets of Dodge City
There was nothing wrong with Dennis’ leg
It was his idea to add the limp to his character role
actor Dennis Weaver left the show for other successful movie roles
Ken Curtis played “Festus Haggen,” replacing Weaver on the show as the Marshall’s new deputy
Ken established his own identity using the twangy speech of a dry-land Kansas farmer
and had played in several John Ford movies
sensible and trustworthy “Matt Dillon,” played by handsome James Arness who
he decided to fool his fellow actors and the director on the set
He put a blood capsule in his mouth and in a shooting scene where he stood tall in the street with his guns drawn
facing down the “bad guy,” two guns were fired
Jim bit down on the blood capsule and fell down as though he was shot
scaring his fellow actors because NOBODY shoots and kills Marshall Dillon
“Sea Smoke,” which he donated to the Sea Scouts
he donated his 1,400 acre ranch in Northern Los Angeles County to Brandeis Institute
Jim learned how to fly and enjoyed flying his own plane with his wife
down to Baja and to other movie sets like Kanab
many of his friends were fellow pilots or television set workers
became an actor changing his last name to the name of their maternal grandfather
Peter’s biggest TV show hit was “Mission Impossible.” Peter died on March 14
Janet and Jim Arness were married for 33 years until his death on June 3, 2011 at age 88 at their home in Brentwood, Calif. His widow, three sons and four grandchildren survive him. Janet Arness continues to communicate with his fans through their official website, http://www.JamesArness.com

and do it on a bigger scale,” said Williams
vice president of news at NBC10 and Telemundo62
is leaving the station after eight years to take a newly created job where he’ll “be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy that will make diversity and inclusion issues a top priority” for NBC-owned stations
“It’s something that I raised my hand for and thought it was a good next step for me to do some of the things I’ve been able to do here in Philadelphia
and do it on a bigger scale,” said Williams in an interview Monday afternoon
the president of NBC Universal Owned Stations

I think a lot of companies [are] … addressing the need for equity and inclusiveness” in their workplaces and culture
NBC10 had been the only NBC-owned station with both a Black general manager

Italy -- The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) hosted a ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Allied Landings at Anzio and Nettuno Jan
The ceremony kicks off a year of scheduled events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of WWII
It honored the almost 11,000 Americans who died fighting to liberate Italy and included a wreath laying
sharing of individual stories of people buried or memorialized at the cemetery
performances by the Italian Military band and U.S
The day concluded with a luminary where every headstone and name on the walls of the missing were illuminated with candles
The allied amphibious landing at Anzio-Nettuno was a major joint operation with allied troops from the American 5th Army
and the British 1st Infantry Division that marked the beginning of the offensive that led to the liberation of Rome in June 1944
remarked about the importance of the commemoration of the landings
as well as the sacrifices of those who fought courageously
the campaign to successfully liberate Italy from the grasp of Axis forces would very likely never have occurred,” said Zirkle
The ceremony honored and paid tribute to those whose lives were lost
“We remember their ultimate sacrifice,” said Zirkle
“They are the reason we are gathered here together
They paid the ultimate price so that we could enjoy the freedom that endures today.” Commemorations like this inspire people of all ages and walks of life to remember
and connect with the legacy of the “Greatest Generation,” and commemorates how the dedicated resolve of allies with a common purpose and shared vision builds proven partnerships that endure

GALLIPOLIS — Sitting on the couch inside the house where she grew up atop a hill in this Ohio River town
Jessica Varian’s eyes shine with unshed tears as she reads one more time the cursive words her grandfather scratched out on notebook paper
The scene Howard Waugh describes takes place just days before the Allied troops liberated Rome during World War II, and the long and grueling Battle of Anzio along the Italian Coast was drawing to a close
The young Army soldier was marching down the critical Highway 7 when he turned his head to peer at the beachhead where so much blood had been shed over months
“I take a last look back thinking how did I survive,” Waugh — Varian's grandfather who was drafted in 1942 and served with the Army’s 39th Combat Engineer Battalion — recounted decades later when he journaled about his war memories after he was well into his 80s
“This place haunts me to this day.”
That last sentence — just seven words — underscores why it is so emotional, so meaningful, so profound for Varian to now clutch one of her grandpa's dog tags in her hand after a history sleuth with a metal detector unearthed it in a wooded area near the Anzio/Nettuno Beachhead some 78 years after Waugh lost it in the war
“He talked about his military service every day
But you never saw the darkness or heard about the bad things he saw and endured,” she said
“It’s good to know now that this piece of him that he carried with him is off that beach where terrible things happened and back home where it belongs.”
Battle of Anzio: New discoveries from World War II Berto Alessandro remembers so clearly the stories his father told him of how the Germans occupied their country’s land in the war and how the soldiers from Allied countries came to help his people
Those memories were front of mind when, about three years ago, the now 42-year-old invested in a metal detector and decided to devote as much time as he could to scouring ground near Anzio/Nettuno for World War II artifacts and get them back in the proper hands
He regularly combed the area known as Foglino woods where Allied troops had camped, but the brambles and thorns and butcher’s broom had grown so thick that
a devastating fire swept some of the acreage and cleared the undergrowth
“I gently … removed the earth slowly with the shovel and these plates came out,” Alessandro said of the dog tags during an interview with The Dispatch over Facebook
“When I saw I did not believe my eyes

Tarquini works hard to both preserve artifacts locally and get others back in the hands of loved ones
“Our mission is to pass on the history of the Second World War in our territory to the new generations,” he wrote in a translated email to The Dispatch
So he researched for descendants of Waugh
whose dog tags indicated he was from Rural Route 1 in a place called Bladen (that’s a crossroads in Ohio Township in Gallia County not far from Gallipolis) and that Homer Waugh (his father) was next of kin
“it is a pleasure and an honor to find and return a personal object to a man
who fought hundreds of miles from home.”
Waugh: A familiar name in Gallia CountyThe Waughs can trace their roots back to the founding of Gallia County, and the family name is etched many times into the granite of the Doughboy Monument in Gallipolis City Park that honors all of the county’s war veterans
in the foothills of Appalachia where the winding and majestic Ohio River reflects the shadow of one of the nation’s largest coal-fired power plants
flags out front of properties are a staple and every event honoring veterans packs in nearly everyone from town
family and country run as deep as the tree roots that snake through the ground
“He never met a stranger,” said Werry
and there was no stopping him from attending any military funeral as part of the color guard
Using the research already provided by Tarquini
and doing some internet sleuthing of her own
Hancock sent a private message to Werry in early December
“I thought it was a scam,” Werry recalled
“I thought it wasn’t real and that they probably wanted my mom to send them money,” she said
Then she saw the photo Alessandro had taken of the dog tags still lying among the tree roots and dirt
“It was just unbelievable,” Varian said
Just seeing the dog tags there on the ground was enough to send her mind back to her grandfather’s memories
and how he never got over the day that most of the men in his squad were lost in a single battle there at Anzio
His memoirs dated the entry as March 26
(illegible) and his men were all killed.”
Her grandfather carried the weight of that day forever
Waugh returned to Italy in 1984 for the anniversary of the battle and went to the cemetery at Nettuno to honor all of the war’s fallen
So when Werry and Varian realized the message from Hancock and Family Treasures Found — which has more than 42,000 members and had successfully reunited family with tens of thousands of photos and heirlooms at no cost — was legitimate, they were overwhelmed
just a few days before what would have been Waugh’s 100th birthday
Inside was a dog tag encased in a clear frame with an American flag as its backdrop
(The other is on display at Tarquini's museum.)
A couple of days passed before Werry finally slid the dog tag from inside the frame
She wanted to — needed to — hold it in her hand.
“My grandpa was … the epitome of a gentleman
grit and valor who personified the Greatest Generation,” she said
“I feel like now things have come full circle

Did you know you can easily reach the beach from Rome in less than an hour
Typically, visitors don't come to Rome to go to the beach
But when summer heats up, I find people, especially families with young children
start asking about how to get to the beach from Rome
Rome is not far from the coast
so you have plenty of options for easily visiting a beach from here.
Click here to see my Google map with all the Rome beaches listed here
plus any other relevant places in each spot
In Italy (and in many other countries in Europe)
it's fairly common to pay to use the beach
You can almost always find part of a given beach that is spiaggia libera
When I first started visiting European beaches in my back-packing student days
I was surprised to find that most of the beach was occupied by lawn chairs and umbrellas
Coming from Florida
I was used to long stretches of sand and surf
it means you don't have to haul a lot of stuff with you when you come to the beach
You can just pay for a big umbrella and comfy lounge chair
when it comes to the more nicely-equipped of these stabilimenti
I think many Italians find it's worth paying to have a calmer
And they like having the services of an on-site shower
In fact, a lot of Italians pay for a year-round pass to their favorite establishment, making it a kind of exclusive club (anyone can join, it's only about money)
So you'll need to decide if you want to pay (rates vary by beach
knowing you'll need to bring your own mat/towel/chair etc
Costs and What You Can Expect To Pay at Rome Beaches
It will cost around 10€ and up for the all-day use of an umbrella and one chair
At some locations you can also rent a private changing cabin
which gives you access to the showers and pool
spots closest to the water are often reserved for the full-time members of a given establishment
Save on data charges with plans from just 19€ from Holafly - our recommended eSIM provider - click here to find out more.
Following are my favorite Rome beaches in order of easiest to reach
The closest beach to Rome, and the easiest to get to, is Ostia
Most Romans will tell you this is not the nicest of the Rome beaches
but it is where many of them go just the same
If you flew into Rome, you may have landed at Fiumicino airport
which is just a little north of this beach
But you can also look for the free beaches in between
or go further south to the free-entry cancelli (see below for how to get there)
Ostia is actually part of the municipality of Rome, so the same ATAC bus/train tickets are valid here
You can use the same ticket you used to arrive in Ostia to get on one of the buses that goes up and down the beach road
as long as the time has not expired (100 minutes from the time you first validated it)
as it may be hard to find a place to buy them once you are there
How to get there: Take the Rome Metro Blue Line B to Piramide
using the same ticket that you used for the Metro
take the Ostia-Lido train (about half hour)
There is only one direction from the Piramide station
Get off at Ostia Lido Centro (not to be confused with Ostia Antica
unless you want to spend a couple of hours visiting these incredible ruins - which I do recommend either for another day
as a half-day visit if you only want a half day at the beach).
you can simply walk from the station to the beach
Instead of getting off at Ostia Lido Centro
stay on the train until the very last stop
you can see quite a lot of (fee-based) beach clubs
061 or 062 buses (they run about every 15 minutes)
you'll have access to plenty of free beach space
Planning to travel between cities in Italy and other parts of Europe
Use Trainline to see all the different options available across the different rail companies
and self-catering apartments in neighborhoods throughout the Eternal City
Purchase the convenient Turbopass and visit all of Rome's top attractions including the Colosseum
This is another beach near Rome that is very easy to reach with one train ride
The train takes you from Termini right to the center of Santa Marinella in under an hour
and the beach is about a 10 minute walk from there
I love Santa Marinella as it has a family-friendly feel
It's not as loud as some other Rome beaches and lacks that party atmosphere
Above is a video of a day trip I took to Santa Marinella in winter
How to get there: Hop on the local train from any of Rome's train stations
Marinella (the "S"of Santa is abbreviated)
The trip costs around 10€ and takes just over an hour
Follow the other bathing-suit clad people getting off the train and you will arrive at the beach in about 5-10 minutes' walk
Fregene is slightly further north than Ostia
so it's still one of the Rome beaches that's close and relatively easy to reach
It can get pretty chaotic on a weekend summer night
We love staying until sunset and enjoying a yummy seafood dinner at La Scialuppa
How to get there: Take the "Pisa - Livorno - Grosseto" train from Rome Termini to Maccarese (around half an hour
From the Maccarese station you can wait for the hourly bus to pass
🔐 Peace of mind for your travels 🧳

Santa Severa is the beach just before Santa Marinella
and also because the beach is mostly spiaggia libera (free)
How to get there: Take a regional train from any of Rome's main train stations
There is something about the wild and free nature of Sabaudia that just grabs me.
you have just a very long strip of sand and beach
and few stabilimenti (fee-based beach clubs.)
This also means there are a lot fewer services and places to eat than you will find at the other Rome beaches
the other side of the road is just marshland
A friend of mine visiting from Brazil actually said to me that the water reminded her of beaches in Brazil
How to get there: Take the regional train from Rome Termini towards Naples
Make sure one of the stops will be Priverno Fossanova
you can walk to the beach about 15-20 minutes
Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome
I've got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors (or those who have not been here in a while.) It works for a 2.5 day visit as well
or want suggestions for extra/other things to do

Anzio is about an hour from Rome's city center
is very easily accessible by train for a mere 7€ round trip
I used to think of Anzio more as a port city or fishing village.
And of course it is well known as the site of the Allied Forces' landing in World War II
The American Cemetery is not far from Anzio
You can opt for an excellent full-day tour from Rome, that includes the cemetery and much more.
The beach in Anzio is divided into a small free area
and a bigger private area that charges admission
The beach itself is flanked by a rocky landscape dotted with Roman ruins from the time of the Emperor Nero (who was from here)
How to get there: Take a regional train from Termini station to Anzio
Many locals agree that Sperlonga is one of the prettiest of the Rome beaches
even if it's really time-consuming to get to
In fact, you might even want to stay for a couple of days
One of the nicest things about Sperlonga is the pretty town the beach is in
It's worth visiting all by itself for the cute tiny streets
This is one of those Rome beaches you can visit in winter
Option 1 - Take a regional train from Rome Termini (and other stations)
The train takes about an hour and costs about 20 Euros one way
Option 2 - Catch a train from Roma Termini to Fondi-Sperlonga
These buses come sort of sporadically, so you should check timetables in advance (site in Italian only)
or perhaps spring for a taxi from the Fondi station (around 20-25€)
Ponza is probably the farthest of the Rome beaches
but absolutely worth the effort it takes to get there
Ponza is an island not far off the coast near Rome, and while you can visit it as a day trip, you may want to consider spending a day or two there
Since my pal Gillian goes there often, she has a lot of writeups on her blog
How to get there: You'll need to take a train to one of the towns south of Rome (Terracina
and then take a hydrofoil or ferry to Ponza
You can also book a day-long tour

Maybe when you were thinking about Rome beaches
the idea of a lake did not immediately come to mind
But visiting one of the lakes near Rome can be a wonderful
Below are the two easiest lakes to get to:
flat walking path that loops around the whole thing (maybe a 2-hour walk max)
Castel Gandolfo, the summer home and gardens of the Pope
If you go on your own, you might want to opt for a romantic, and delicious, lunch or dinner at the famed Ristorante Pagnanelli
where you can enjoy amazing lake-views and first-rate cuisine
For a step by step description of how you can spend a day visiting Castel Gandolfo, check out this blog post by Natalie of An American in Rome
How to get there: Trains leave Rome Termini (and other stations) at least once an hour
You can also take the scenic route along the Appian Way on a bike tour and glide around Lake Albano.
Lake Bracciano offers several options for a lovely day trip out of Rome
Bracciano also boasts a 15th century castle you can visit (most famous for where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were married)
How to get there: Take the local train from Rome's San Pietro station (right behind the Vatican)
and it takes about an hour to get to Bracciano
You can also consider a half-day tour
which of course takes all the planning off your hands
