A Kyrgyz activist has been sentenced to prison for Facebook posts that authorities said "incited hatred," and called for the "violent seizure of power." She says the Facebook profile was fake
Lawyers for Kanykei Aranova argued that she had been framed
but a court in Kyrgyzstan’s capital of Bishkek sentenced her to three and a half years in prison on June 28
Family members are now caring for her 11-year old daughter
The verdict came amidst a crackdown on journalists and activists
which began after Sadyr Japarov became president of the Central Asian nation in 2021
In the worldwide press freedom index compiled by Reporters Without Borders
Kyrgyzstan last year fell 50 spots to 122 out of 180 countries
Among the targets of the crackdown were 11 journalists with OCCRP’s Kyrgyz reporting partner, Temirov Live, who were arrested earlier this year on similar charges as Aranova. They have denied accusations of “inciting mass unrest,” and a defense lawyer said last month that the case is politically motivated
The case against Aranova was primarily based on posts on a Facebook account that has since been taken offline
journalists with OCCRP and Temirov Live saved screenshots showing that the profile was at first under the name Adina Juma
the Facebook profile changed to show Aranova’s name
a number of existing posts were edited in ways that authorities could interpret as incriminating
“I was judged without evidence,” she said in an April interview
opened a fake profile on Facebook and wrote various posts.”
Less than three weeks after the offensive messages were posted to Facebook
Aranova was arrested in Moscow and extradited to her home country of Kyrgyzstan
When she first discovered the offensive messages on the Facebook account in her name
Aranova contacted the Kyrgyz lawyer Tologon Keldibaev
“She asked for advice on how to stop it,” Keldibaev said in an interview
“I told her that Facebook would block the profile if she reported about that fake account
I also advised her to report it to the State Committee of National Security (GKNB)”
the GKNB was aware of the messages –– and the agency used it to build a case against her
according to court documents provided to reporters
The GKNB said the messages on the Facebook page in Aranova’s name included “systematic calls for a violent seizure of power and inciting inter-regional hatred.”
One of the doctored posts called Japarov a “tribalist,” and said he favors people from his northern region of Issyk-Kul
who have “filled all positions everywhere.”
Another post mentioned opposition politician Adakhan Madumarov
saying he would “fuck up Sadyr Japarov and become president.” A different post said that “power must be seized openly
and only Madumarov is worthy of being a ruler.”
Yet another post excoriated Doolot Sydykov
who is a “manaschy,” a scholar of an ancient epic poem about a hero called Manas
Sydykov had been critical of the government
who heads the GKNB and is close to Japarov
The Facebook post read: “The traitor Manaschy Doolot is licking Tashiev’s ass.”
Facebook did not respond to questions from reporters about the profile with Aranova’s name
which contained edited posts that were used to convict her
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov (left) holds a meeting with Kamchybek Tashiev
the head of the State Committee on National Security
Documents from Aranova’s case show that on January 22 –– just nine days after edits were made to the Facebook page to create offensive messages –– the GKNB asked the Ministry of Justice to analyze the posts
The ministry then requested the National Academy of Sciences
to carry out a “scientific-political examination.” That analysis was completed in one day
The analysis said the Facebook posts were “aimed at inciting interregional hostility” and that they were “aimed at calling for disobedience to the authorities and/or its overthrow.”
One former researcher at the National Academy of Sciences has called out his former employer for allegedly acting as a tool of the GKNB
In a March 8 Facebook post, Zhoomart Karabaev said the GKNB uses the institution to “conduct false political examinations.” In an April 18 post
Court records show that Zhanyshbek was the expert who examined the Facebook posts made in Aranova’s name
and directed questions to the National Academy of Sciences
Karabaev said in his April 18 post that he had been pressured by the GKNB to provide analysis in political cases
and that four other researchers had left their jobs for the same reason
Karabaev himself is now in pre-trial detention after being charged on July 2 for “inciting mass riots” in relation to his social media activities
In addition to the National Academy of Sciences’ analysis of the Facebook posts in Aranova’s name
Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Justice supplied a “forensic linguistic” analysis
Those experts determined that the messages were “aimed at replacing the current government,” and “creating interregional tensions.”
Aranova’s political activism has landed her in trouble with Kyrgyz authorities before
In October 2022, she was sentenced to 30 hours of community service, according to a report by Kloop, OCCRP’s member center in Kyrgyzstan, which is also under attack from the government
Aranova had uploaded a video of herself speaking about the controversial transfer of the Kempir-Abad reservoir to neighboring Uzbekistan
The two governments had settled a border dispute with Kyrgyzstan ceding the reservoir to Uzbekistan in exchange for 19,000 hectares of land. The deal sparked protests in Kyrgyzstan, where authorities arrested more than 20 people and charged them with “attempting to violently overthrow the government.”
who were angry about the lack of public consultation
were acquitted last month after a lengthy legal process
She accused him of excluding people from meetings about the negotiations
and refusing to let journalists film the proceedings
Aranova was reportedly charged with “slander and ridicule of government officials.”
While Kyrgyzstan previously had a relatively open political and media scene, observers have noted the Central Asian country’s steps backward under Japarov
a prominent Kyrgyz lawyer and human rights activist
said it is now common for authorities to manufacture evidence to silence journalists and activists
said she was not surprised that the court had jailed Aranova based on Facebook posts from a fake profile
“The authorities are ready to persecute any citizen

The 2024 ARA Show returns to New Orleans with the theme ‘Shaping the Future of Rental,’ a vision that appears bright
thanks to steady demand and continuing expansion
To take a pulse of its membership going into the show
we spoke with ARA Vice President Josh Nickell
who has positive things to say about the current state of the industry and its ongoing evolution
The world’s largest equipment and event rental exhibition
US this week for the first time since 2018
amid an atmosphere of both excitement and “cautious optimism.”
who noted many of the trade association’s members experienced record years between 2021 and 2023
but now the industry is returning to “normal,” ultimately a positive message that dovetails with the ARA’s theme “Shaping the Future of Rental.”
is expected to draw more than 10,000 visitors to see some 650 exhibits.
“Everybody’s pretty positive,” Nickell said of the atmosphere going into the show
“[Equipment] availability has improved in almost all categories
higher interest rates are pinching equipment rental companies in the face of global economic uncertainties
so there remains a sense of restraint.
“I think it’s a cautious optimism,” Nickell said
noting that as supply chain challenges began to clear up and interest rates took a pause from their rapid-fire increases from the past couple of years
ARA members’ concerns over the future were calmed at the same time that market demand cooled after a few record-breaking years.
One of the ways the equipment rental industry is leaning into the future is through the increased use of data and analytics when setting rates
rental rates seem to be holding steady or even increasing in most markets across North America
Companies facing rising equipment prices and higher interest rates have little choice but to pass some of those increases on to customers
but they’re doing so with discipline.
“The industry is a lot more thoughtful,” Nickell said
“I don’t see a pullback in rates coming because equipment is still a lot more expensive because interest rates are higher
and because companies are using better analytics to make their decisions.”
Another trend impacting the future of rental is consolidation
Large rental chains are currently in acquisition mode
putting mid-size regionals in the spotlight
“Our membership is at record levels of company count
so there are more equipment rental companies than there has been at any other time in history,” Nickell said
In the two days leading up the opening of the tradeshow portion of the event
ARA hosted numerous educational sessions centering on themes such as workforce development
Nickell hinted at a new campaign the ARA will release at the show with the hopes of cultivating a new generation of skilled workers for the industry
Stay tuned at IRN for more on this later this week.
Digitalization was another predominant theme in the program.
people want to do more online,” Nickell said
and it’s incredibly necessary for our members’ long-term success.”
Nickell said he expects good things from this year’s show.
“Things continue to be good and that gives people more confidence
We’re going back to normal and I think people are settling into that and getting more comfortable with spending and buying more equipment.”

What's driving that change this time is Nova rewriting itself around Launcher3 rather than the deprecated Launcher2
a change that has been needed for a couple of years now
This is a big update and it's not quite ready for the whole world yet — that's why it's starting with a beta test through the Nova Launcher Discord channel — but it's in pretty good shape so far from my experience with the beta
Most Nova features are staying the same or improving with the switchover from the Launcher2 base to Launcher3
but there are a few features that are going away when this update pushes out to the stable channel
here's the changelog so far for the Nova 7 beta:
A new feature that seems small but could make a big impact is the ability to set different apps/shortcuts for when you swipe down from a home screen app instead of just when you swipe up
you could set the swipe up from your Phone app to bring up Google Meet for your morning video call instead and a swipe down to direct-dial your mom
One area where we're seeing a lot of changes is the app drawer
and it starts with the elimination of horizontally-paged app drawers
You can still use app drawer tabs and swipe through them horizontally
but each tab is now a vertically-scrolling list or grid rather than static pages you could flip through
but if you have your app drawer tab-sorted by category
and now you can even set the tab carousel at the bottom rather than the top
There are similar options for the search bar in the app drawer as well
and folders are getting new tweaks as well in both look and feel
I'm hopeful that more changes will come as Nova 7 makes its way towards a stable release — please
we need a central theming menu so I don't have to change colors in ten different places when I swap themes — but the changes we're seeing so far are very encouraging

Original Compositions Premiered by an International Ensemble of Musicians
the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Sayat Nova International Composition Competition held its biannual gala concert and award ceremony at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater at Symphony Space in New York
The gala concert premiered compositions by the three winners of the 2014 Sayat Nova International Composition Competition
performed by an international ensemble of musicians from Armenia
The concert also featured songs by 18th-century Armenian bard Sayat Nova on the kamancha and poems by Armenian poet Daniel Varoujan
Opening remarks were given by Ambassador Zohrab Mnatsakanyan
the permanent representative of Armenia to the United Nations
the dean and provost of the Juilliard School
“2015 is laced with symbolism for the Armenian people,” said Mnatsakanyan
but I think it also very strongly symbolizes our pride
Daniel Varoujan: a man who perished in the tragic days of the Armenian Genocide
his strength and love of art and beauty traveled through generations and is here tonight.”
Guzelimian also remarked on the legacy of Daniel Varoujan in the continuity of Armenian art:
“When wars are fought and histories are written
often the most precious thing that remains of a people is its voice as expressed in its cultural creative spirit
so it is extremely appropriate that we stake our claim to the future in celebrating these commissions tonight
I was thinking about the fact that the terrible death of Daniel Varoujan was meant to silence his voice
but his poetry is treasured and remembered
The joy in these works tonight is that his poetry is a generative force
It sparks creation yet again and sparks new life and new voices
That is an extraordinary metaphor for the power of this commemoration and all of us as a people,” said Guzelimian
The Sayat Nova International Composition Competition is designed to introduce Armenian musical traditions to a wider audience by inviting composers of all heritages to submit original compositions for an ensemble of Armenian traditional and Western classical instruments
in commemoration of the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide
the competition asked composers to include in their compositions the poetry of Daniel Varoujan
one of the first victims of the Armenian Genocide
The winners of this year’s competition were Hovik Sardaryan of Armenia/Nagorno-Karabagh
and Richard Melkonian of the United Kingdom
“I am very happy to have participated in the AGBU Sayat Nova International Composition Competition
particularly working with Western Armenian poetry and the duduk
I have never worked with such an organic composition of instruments before and I’m grateful to the organizers of the competition for this opportunity,” said Sardaryan
“We would like to express our gratitude to the distinguished jury who offered its expertise in judging the competition and to VoxNovus for creating the online submission and evaluation software used this year as well as to the AGBU New York Special Events Committee (NYSEC) for making the gala concert possible,” said Hayk Arsenyan
director of the AGBU Performing Arts Department
