performed by talented singers in an outdoor concert at the end of the Mediterranean summer
La Notte della Taranta is a popular music festival in Italy that aims to strengthen and promote the traditional music of Salento through its revival and mixing with other musical languages
in a format of street concerts that roam for a few weeks in various squares of the villages of Salento in Apulia
starting from Corigliano d’Otranto and ending at the concert of Melpignano
featuring national and international musicians reputation
Every year the final concert is entrusted to an artistic director (“maestro concertatore”) who has the task of choosing the songs and assigning them to the artists
arranging the traditional music of Salento
fusing its rhythms with those of other musical traditions
well-known musicians in the likes of Goran Bregovic
Raphael Gualazzi have been artistic directors of the final concert of the festival
The participating performers mainly serve traditional music
in recent years the organization La Notte della Taranta invites as guests well-known and beloved artists of contemporary Italian music such as il Volo
trying to increase awareness of the festival
as the number of spectators who watch the final concert in Melpignano
And in this way they aroused in a festive atmosphere the approximately 200,000 spectators who attended the concert
A group of experienced folk music performers
Stefania Morciano and Giancarlo Paglialunga performed the songs theatrically and lyrically
who were invited to participate in this year’s event
The artistic direction of the concert was in the hands of musician Fiorella Mannoia
who is especially loved by the Italian audience
She did not only presented the event and talked to the invited artists
but also performed songs and danced on stage
As this year’s Notte della Taranta events took place under the weight of recent incidents of abuse of young girls in southern Italy
there were messages against violence against women
A characteristic reference was the “Stop now
no one else” that Tananai had written on his coat as well as the words of Fiorella Mannoia in the margin of the historical song “Fimmene
women) which refers to the exploitation of tobacconists by the tobacconists of Salento: “ Love must be shared
The evening ended with all the artists – performers and dancers – singing “Calinitta” (Good Night) and all the spectators singing loudly along and applauding them for the euphoria that the beautiful event offered them
The main theme of this year’s event was “identity” as a community builder
In the context of the press conference on the eve of the concert
some of the performers of this year’s event made the following relevant statements:
We worked a lot on the musical arrangements
The difficulty lies in touching these popular songs
leaving a folk mark and managing to put in some modern elements
In the arrangement of the music Carlo Di Francesco and Clemente Ferrari have incorporated the Arabic traditions
all the traditions which then passed to our Southern Italy
So atmospheres from other countries will also be heard
Identity would be nice to see as the sum of many identities and I think that is the goal of Notte della Taranta
The matrix of this music is about exploitation or the pain of living on the margins
it’s a festive and poignant story that’s important to convey
Because it is good to create sensitivity and empathy towards conditions of suffering that are part of life
I grew up in an Albanian-speaking community and I am convinced that if we manage to mix
And I believe that the Notte della Taranta is one of the most important testimonies of preserving one’s identity and pride in one’s roots.” He added that “The love with which people” from Salento “come to correct you” in the pronunciation of the lyrics “actually means that they want you to understand who they are
People want you to really get into their culture and that’s a beautiful thing
The program of the big concert of La Notte della Taranta 2023 included the following songs (performers in parentheses):
