The girls 200 Yard Freestyle swimmers pose with their medals during the NJSIAA Meet of Champions at Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Corey Annan | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comIt was déjà vu for Summit senior Sidney Arcella going into the 200 free finals at Meet of Champions
the biggest race of her storied career to this point
she finished second behind Wayne Valley senior Sarah Rodrigues’s after Saturday’s prelims
She managed to edge Rodrigues in the finals that season
but beating a swimmer of that caliber twice is never easy
especially since Rodrigues is a reigning state champion herself in the backstroke
as Summit head coach Erin Fogarty watched her star swimmer pace around the pool deck with Beats headphones in place and that familiar calm expression
she knew that she was about to watch history repeat itself
“There’s so many legacy moments that fall into place with Sidney throughout her career
“I knew she was locked in and ready for that moment.”
That legacy moment came to fruition for the Duke commit
Going stride-for-stride with Rodrigues during the 200 free finals
Arcella captured her third consecutive state title in that event
resetting her own Meet of Champions record with a time of 1:46.71
“It took me while to truly register what had happened because sometimes I can’t see the scoreboard very well (after a race)
but once I saw that I broke my record again
”It felt very good to end off with something new for that year and to have accomplished another thing for my senior year."
She followed that miraculous win up with a second place finish in 100 freestyle (50.17)
Her success at MOCs was far from the only thing that Arcella accomplished this season
which is why the Summit senior is NJ.com’s Girls Swimmer of the Year for the 2024-25 season
Along with being named New Jersey Girls Swimmer of the Year
Arcella will finish her career with the following achievements:
“Sidney has been a huge component of our success over the last (four years),” Fogarty said
“Everyone who swam with her in high school career will (brag) and say
That name isn’t going away in the swimming world anytime soon."
racking up 19 victories between six individual events
In her final Union County Championship meet
she won Union County titles in both the 200 free (1:49.99) and 500 free (5:02.63)
After starting out as a freshman primarily as a 50 & 100 free swimmer
her evolution into an elite distance freestyler has been extraordinary
Much of that evolution came from her putting her team’s needs before her own
which she has always done throughout her career
I just tried it one time in (a meet) and it felt really good,” Arcella said about how she got into the 200 free
“Being a part of this team is what got me into the distance freestyle events
we would kind of just experiment with what would (help) get us to the state finals
And some of that was me being in the distance events
and that helped me find out that those were good events for me.”
Sidney Arcella of Summit during the Chatham vs
Summit in the NSIAA Girls North 2B swimming finals in Perth Amboy
With Arcella’s exceptional talent in the pool
defining her as just one type of swimmer would be selling her abilities short
Arcella has broken school records in nine different events at Summit
an event that Arcella didn’t particularly care for earlier in her career
She recorded six dual meet wins in that event this winter
“I remember when I first started (swimming) at Summit the team and Coach (Fogarty) had a document where we’d say what events we want to swim and then an event we would never want to be put in,” Arcella said
“I put the 500 free almost every year in the event that I would never want to swim
Being able to swim the event at every dual meet and the (Union) county meet has definitely helped me figure out the best way for me to swim it.”
“(Being versatile) also helped me with my other events this season
like swimming the 500 free helps me with me 200 free
and swimming the the 100 free helps me with my 200 free
As much as Arcella appreciates her individual accomplishments from excelling in multiple events
she’s even more proud of her team success throughout her four years at Summit
Her sensational senior season led to a 13-1 season for Summit
The Hilltoppers also captured its second straight Union County title and qualified for the North 2
Group B sectional final - an incredible feat in arguably the toughest bracket in the state
“I think it was such a big goal for the team that we wanted to start the year off strong and go as far as we could in states,” Arcella said
“Being able to win counties as a team this season was the best feeling
since last year was the first time ever that we won it
We just came out this year with the same (mindset) of us being able to do it again
and everyone stepped up to make it happen.”
Arcella has always been a leader inside the Summit pool
but her leadership was where she grew the most this season
“Just seeing her growth has been (extraordinary),” Fogarty said
“Freshman year Sydney was just as talented
And then to see her want to call team meetings at lunch
wanting to hype up her teammates and talk about the lineup
because as a coach you want to call those team meetings
But then when my top swimmer wants them to call them
Arcella plans to carry that same mindset and leadership as she joins a Duke program that is on the rise within the Atlantic Coastal Conference (ACC)
She has a lofty goal of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in her first season
She’ll likely focus on the 100 and 200 freestyle but may also dabble in other events
She knows that she has an army of people supporting her
which makes chasing those dreams much more worthwhile
“I’m so lucky to have been able to compete for Summit and for Coach Fogarty,” Arcella said
“The (memories) of this team and these people will always be with me
and I know they’ll be there whenever I need them.”

a sophomore from Cherokee High School who swam a PB of 49.85 to dip under the 50 barrier for the first time

She cut over a second off of her previous best with that swim
splitting 29.37/33.17 to lead the race wire to wire
Loyola University (Maryland) commit Meghan Donovan took 2nd in 1:03.36
The sprint free relays were swept by Mount Saint Mary Academy. In the 200 free relay, the quartet of Dani Carter (24.02)
and Catherine Ritter (23.25) combined for a 1:36.24 to best the Pingry School (1:36.50) and Chatham High School (1:36.63) in a thrilling race that came down to the touch
Similarly, in the 400 free relay, the same quartet from Mount Saint Mary’s came from behind to beat out Chatham (3:31.27) and Pingry (3:32.25) once again. Notably, Dani Carter anchored in a 50.84 to make up a a 1+ second deficit and take the win
In a dramatic turn of events, Bridgewater Raritan High School got DQ’d for an early take-off after initially touching first in the 200 Medley Relay. Summit High School’s team of Declan Vargas (24.28), Yehor Maistruk (24.96)
and Charlie Moon (20.93) thus took the win in 1:32.98
while Princeton High School claimed 3rd (1:35.29)
Kenny Barnicle, a Cal commit, repeated as the 200 free champion with a time of 1:35.15 and was over 2 seconds faster than the 1:37.45 that he swam to win last year. Charlie Kulp
a senior at Chatham High School who heads to Duke this fall
came in 2nd with a 1:36.90—a new personal best by .03 seconds
Barnicle was the sole swimmer on the boys’ side to claim double victories
matching his PB to the hundredth and beating Gregory Yukhvid (45.34)
Georgetown commit Daren Chen (1:48.96) similarly defended his title in the 200 IM
just out-touching Jaden Lee (1:49.04) for the win
The two were 1-2 in this event last year as well
Summit High School sophomore Yehor Maistruk dominated the 100 breast
swimming a 54.34 for the win while Northwestern commit Zack Kusch followed in a 55.14
Westfield also swept the sprint free relays
and Danny Pierce (20.64) combining for the win in the 200 free relay (1:23.78)
with Christopher Wasko’s 20.37 split
lead the Westfield Blue Devils off in 44.96

The Satoshi Sculpture Garden from Christopher Arcella on Vimeo
With bitcoin values soaring and “blockchain” the soon-to-be-new film industry buzzword, Christopher Arcella is out with a well-timed short
he follows a young woman as she surveys an outdoor sculpture garden consisting of pieces that play upon ideas tied to the cryptocurrency
From Arcella’s director’s statement:
In order to fully appreciate Bitcoin one needs to have a basic understanding of Bitcoin’s technology and the systems that the technology is disrupting
trying to understand Bitcoin is a bit like trying to derive meaning from abstract sculpture
The Satoshi Sculpture Garden is a short film that places audiences into such a situation
Each sculpture in the film represents a concept relevant to Bitcoin and blockchain technology
Those who understand the technology will have a drastically different viewing experience than those who don’t
I hope this film provides all viewers with a satisfying stroll through a mysterious sculpture garden filled with clever visualizations of concepts not yet known to the masses
In addition I hope the film will spark the curiosity of those unfamiliar with the technology
an artist support mechanism is built into the video itself: the first sculpture

3 minutes A.Gandalfi amoeba resembles Lord Of The Ring Wizard
are usually of interest only to the researchers that discover them
a new South American species is garnering significant attention from fans of the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R.Tolkien
bears a close similarity to the hat donned by Gandalf
the powerful wizard leader of the Fellowship of the Ring and the army of the West
Named Arcella gandalfi in honor of Tolkien's wizard
the amorphous organism had previously been observed in many parts of Brazil
researchers could never collect enough specimens to test if the freshwater amoebae were a new species
That changed after Jordana de Carvalho e Féres stumbled upon them in large numbers in the water samples she collected in Amapá and Rio de Janeiro
To investigate the unusual-looking organisms
the biologist teamed up with Professor Daniel J.G
the team was able to obtain the measurements and images necessary to conclude that A
Lahr also believes that this strange amoeba is exclusive to South America
whose color ranges from light yellow to brown
Though its carapace measures a mere 81-microns wide by 71-microns tall
the amoeba is a giant among single-celled organisms
measure less than half its size and are typically disk-shaped
who published their findings in the journal Acta-Protozoologica in December 2016
aren't sure why the carapace is hat-shaped
Since the shell has been found inside the stomachs of predator microorganisms
it clearly does not serve as a defense mechanism
The scientists speculate its primary purpose may be to store moisture to protect against fluctuating water levels in the amoeba’s habitat
The carapace could also be shielding the single-celled organism from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays
“A multicellular organism has a number of protective barriers against UV radiation
In the case of single-cell organisms like amoebae
A.gandalfi is not the only interesting-looking species discovered recently
scientists in South West India stumbled upon a new kind of spider that closely resembles the sorting hat in J.K

Katherine Allensworth and Grace Kupiszewski — newly professed novices of the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament — are filled with exuberant joy about their future
Paul Sister Carly Arcella takes a selfie as she shoots video for a new Advent series
Her order focuses on communication as a form of evangelization
ORLANDO | As reports of those entering religious life claim doom and gloom for the future of men and women religious
the new “sister” is focusing more on mission than numbers
fully embracing their charisms and responsibility of caring for the aging in their communities
A look at the numbers would intimidate any young woman contemplating her vocation
The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) states a decline of about 75% of women religious since 1965
population has risen from 194 million to 326 million
According to the National Religious Vocation Conference
87% of men and women in perpetual vows are over the age of 60
Of the 48 sisters in the Diocese of Orlando
what does this mean to young novices entering the dawn of their religious life
the diocese has celebrated the perpetual vows of Sister Carly Arcella to the Daughters of St
and Sister Kristi Bergman to the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary (August 2021)
It has also rejoiced over the start of religious journeys for Sister Amanda Davis to the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary (November 2020) and Sister Grace Kupiszewski
to the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (August 2021)
Does the microcosm within the Diocese of Orlando allow viewing the future through a more optimistic lens
Growing numbers of young orders like the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary
offer hope because their sisters are successful
And it recently celebrated the ordination of two priests
Attracted to a simple life of community and prayer
each order evangelizes through their own charism or gift
The community’s charism is still a driving force for discerners — not the viability of the order
Sister Catherine Noecker is a member of St
and serves as moderator for women religious in the diocese
She recalled the year she entered the order
She said the burden on younger sisters has been noticeable
Sister Noecker’s order recently received their first novice in 20 years — Sister Maise Ng
When asked about whether she was concerned about being the youngest in the congregation of sisters averaging age 80
Sister Ng said “no.” Her Chinese heritage places great value on the elderly
which makes her “feel right at home” in the congregation
The novice looks forward to sharing in an intergenerational community and the guidance and wisdom of those who have walked the path before her
Sister Carly Arcella acknowledged her community is “re-looking anew at the quality of life and spaces for our seniors to live happy
healthy lives in community alongside us.”
“The burden does not weigh us down in mission
in mutual love and prayer support between younger sisters striving ahead and older sisters supporting us in wisdom and in prayer,” she added
Sister Arcella’s optimism stems from growth within her order — the Daughters of St
22 have entered and 10 discerned not to continue during initial formation
The order’s charism is communication as a means of evangelization
today it is challenged to adapt a strong social media presence
Currently she is working on a video series for Advent
noting the sisters are feeling a need to integrate more video into everyday communications
reading the Word of God is the deeper part of the relationship,” Sister Arcella said
“That relationship often begins on social media — the reel
She added the mission of evangelization points them “to fearlessly pick up the new means for the sake of the Gospel.” Understanding the role of communication in today’s society means watching things like Netflix and always watching the credits that follow video productions
“It’s a sacred moment of prayer for the people who worked on the project and for those that will be watching it,” she said
wrote in the order’s beatitudes: “Blessed are the walkers of God
who in the mystic silence of the convent study the ways of the world
and on the morrow walk them to reach souls.”
Sister Deborah Marie Borneman is a Sister of Sts
and serves as director of mission integration at the National Religious Vocation Conference
She said since social media tracks followers it can be used as a platform to promote vocations to religious life
She regarded it as a “wise investment because of the numbers of people using it today.”
That search for community continues to be among the top five reasons people are attracted to religious life
“It’s one of the unique aspects of the vocation of religious life.”
a joint 2020 study through the National Religious Vocation Conference and the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate
revealed 12% of the more than 700 religious institutes in the United States (of these
more than 500 are for women) have chosen to no longer accept newer entrants after “prayerfully and intentionally” discerning to move forward in living their vows until the last member dies
Among the reasons are the absence of newer members in the past few years and no anticipation of receiving candidates
there is the beauty of a new way of thinking
“Unlike previous generations to religious life
they recognize stewardship involves divesting of empty buildings
and sponsored institutions to live more simply
utilizing human and material resources to benefit the neediest,” Sister Borneman said
adding orders also recognize the need for diversity
Servant of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary Sister Gianna Grace Perino serves associate director of vocations in the diocese
She said the young people of today “are responding to the Lord’s call with a courageous fiat — a ‘yes’ – a response that is full of the deep and abiding love they found in the father’s heart.”
“(W)e see the future of religious life as a bright future – a future full of hope,” she continued
“During the pandemic and in the following months/year
a great many young people took advantage of the silence to pray about their vocations
fundamental questions of themselves and of the Lord.”

We think consumers will be very pleased by the outstanding quality and flavour of the fruit ripened in Rocklea,” Arcella said

delivering excellent produce for our consumers while striving to be energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly,” said Montague
Arcella Bananas is known for its Tropicana brand of bananas and supplies bananas from its three banana plantations located in Mareeba

After 47 years selling bananas, there's not much Pat Arcella hasn't experienced - fluctuating prices, a constantly evolving wholesale market and a couple of devastating tropical cyclones along the way.
These days instead of a dominant wholesale central market, increasingly growers sell direct to supermarket chains in what's called 'green loading'. It was a trend Mr Arcella recognised early and in 1997, he decided to start producing bananas as well as attracting 30 other suppliers to market collectively under his brand, Tropicana Bananas.
"For many years we were doing Coles and Franklins, I could see they actually wanted to go to bed with the growers so if we wanted to keep serving the chains I felt we had to go into growing," he recalled.
Today, more than 25 million trays of bananas are grown in Australia every year as the geographic footprint expands to the very far north of Queensland at Lakeland and the very far west, Carnarvon. After a year of prolonged depressed prices, a question at last week's Australian Banana Congress was: 'Are there too many bananas being produced?'
Mr Arcella's answer shows his unwavering belief in the product he's sold for the best part of five decades.
"In the end of the market will sort itself out," he said.
"In a proper year without cyclones most probably we're going to have those little gluts but that's part of life, you put up with the up's and down's. But the bad times don't last forever, neither do the good times, you just gotta hang in there."

Smokers and non-smokers gather on the patio at Davidoff of Geneva to get a good view of the Strip
Although Las Vegas is far more liberal than most places in the United States when it comes to smoking
not even the capital of gambling and general debauchery has been able to completely avoid the stricter rules
“Nowadays you can only smoke at the cigar lounges
and on the gaming room floor of the casinos and it has to be in an age-restricted area,” explains Matthew F
this didn’t sit well with a major Las Vegas conference body
which changed the rules in 2009 to exclude conventions
This enabled the return of the ICPCR [International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers]
Rare Fuente cigars are to be found at the only Fuente shop outside the Dominican Republic
We’re sitting on the patio of Arcella’s lounge outside the Fashion Show Mall
His is the only lounge that is literally located right on the Strip
“We have an unparalleled view of the Strip
and a substantial number of our customers are non-smokers,” he says
“They come here for the ambience and the view
It actually changes over the course of the day
During daytime it’s a place for business meetings
and finally the pre-club bottle service where you’ll have around ten people in their mid-20s coming in ordering ten cigars and a bottle of Dom Pérignon
a youthful energy and we like to emphasize that it’s a cigar bar
It has a different vibe than the lounges.” Most of the cigars sold are Davidoff’s own
but you can also get some of the other major brands here
and that’s why we sell other brands as well.” Not far from there
“We only sell Fuente products here,” says the general manager
“There’s no other Fuente cigar store outside of the Dominican Republic
This is a destination spot.” I choose a Julius Caesar and sit down by the bar
Cuban salsa rhythms are filling up the room
I’d say that 85 to 90 percent of our customers know their cigars
They come to Las Vegas to do certain things
Then we have those who’ve never seen a place like this
like the Cuban look and come in.” It’s also the only place where you can buy a Casa Fuente
“We have a couple of rare Fuente cigars and some people come here just for that
It’s also one of few places where you can’t gamble
Inside Las Vegas’s biggest humidor in the Montecristo Cigar Bar at Caesars Palace
the newest addition to Las Vegas as a cigar destination
which is located in the same massive complex as The Forum Shops
with up to 1,000 cigars,” says Chelsea Ryder
public relations manager at Caesars Entertainment
all sizes and we’re the only ones who sell Montecristo here.” It’s definitely a different vibe compared to the other places
Cuban salsa has been replaced by lounge music; there’s a library part with a giant screen showing ice hockey
a smaller TV on the other wall showing baseball; a back patio with an outdoor feel to it; and the bar top has the kind of built-in games you can find all over Las Vegas
“We’re the only place where you can enjoy cigars
We have a deal with the restaurant next door.”
At La Casa you can listen to live music five days a week
Although most lounges are located on the Strip
there are also other places where you can enjoy a cigar
and La Casa in Tivoli Village in West Las Vegas
The latter offers live music and a more local touch than the ones on the Strip
“It’s a family atmosphere here,” says Dirk Thomas
a regular who comes in a couple of times a week
but we’re all friends here.” “It’s more random on the Strip,” bartender Barby Snyder adds
“Here we get the same people.” They sell everything but Cubans
La Casa has a different music theme for each day
from easy listening and Motown to salsa and jazz
“If you want to go to the Strip you have to park the car and walk through the crowd
Tivoli Village is my favorite place in the whole city
Since graduating with an engineering degree in surveying in 2005

He stumbled upon the cigar world while working for a non-governmental organization in Estelí
and is now mainly making a living writing about cigars

PS, There’s MorePS, There’s MoreI Tried Target's Top-Selling Nail-Polish Brand — Here Are My ThoughtsThe New York native gave birth to twin girls four years ago
she knew it was time to make changes with products that fit her new way of life
Years after the idea of creating a nail-polish brand first popped into her head
Alejandro saw the opportunity to launch a vegan
and 21-free nail-polish brand that marries luxury
and sustainability through artfully designed polishes
"It's always been in my mind to be an entrepreneur," she says
"I've tried different things and landed on beauty after I gave birth."
She shares that her postpartum period was super transformational for her as a human
who was a mental health clinician for 10 years
was inspired by Deborah Lippmann's story of becoming a manicurist by accident to support her singing career
"I thought she was so cool, and I didn't know that a regular person could launch something," she says. During her medical career, Alejandro supported youth with very serious medical conditions and traumas. She felt she needed to switch careers after experiencing burnout and secondary traumatic stress
I think I really didn't have the resources to take care of myself," she says
I didn't have the support needed to have that strength
because I think the support of any community is the strength that we need as people."
Alejandro did have a strong community of women that inspired her and that helped her shape her relationship with beauty
She was heavily influenced by her mother's Dominican side
(Her father is Puerto Rican.) With one of her aunts owning salons in Miami and another showing her how to become savvy in the beauty department
it was almost inevitable for her not to be charmed by it
"We would spend weekends making our own beauty products
'We're going to play spa,' and she taught me how to paint my nails
and she taught me how to make the perfect french [manicure]
I would do it for all my friends growing up," recalls Alejandro
who also remembers the allure of her grandmother's vanity
all of these perfume bottles that were so beautiful," she says
Alejandro's journey to launching a nail-polish brand was also formed by her relationship with hair
and he very much raised me as 'you're an Afro-Latina
your hair is curly and beautiful,'" Alejandro says
Lilia CretcherAlejandro believed that her nails were the only "part of me that no one could criticize." Despite her father's sweet and encouraging words
she grew up with the notion that curly hair wasn't as beautiful
and that was something she did not want to pass on to her daughters
she stopped straightening her hair after 20 years
"I would go on vacation or go in the pool and then come home and straighten my hair," she says
"There was no way that I would let anyone see me with it
It was ingrained in me that I just wasn't as beautiful with my curly hair
so I had to work through that becoming a mom," says the beauty founder
"I try to normalize curly hair for them and that their brown skin is beautiful
[and] that they're beautiful just the way they are."
Alejandro's eye for beauty goes beyond aesthetics as she's fully conscious of the missed opportunities given to Black and Brown communities for a more sustainable and organic lifestyle
Although For Tmrw is a brand that celebrates beauty as art
it's also her way of giving her community access to clean
The name is a bright reminder of what the brand stands for
which is creating a better tomorrow for her daughters
and everyone else willing to adopt a cleaner way of life
"I wanted to create something in my community that didn't make it so hard for Black and Brown people to feel like it's for them."
"I wanted to create something in my community that didn't make it so hard for Black and Brown people to feel like it's for them," Alejandro says
I didn't even feel like that was for me." "I wanted to make it easier to have access to that journey."
"Black and Brown women are seven times more prone to using products with toxins than white women
and that's where I've been trying to focus my activism and education on — my community."
As a proud supporter of other female-founded brands, Alejandro is all for collaborating with businesses that align with her purpose. Last year, she collaborated with fellow Latina-owned brand Ceremonia to create For Tmrw x Ceremonia Guava Set
inspired by the hair-care brand's iconic Guava collection
"That was a lot of fun collaborating with them
And it was cool because this concept of guava is amazing," she says
and cake with guava filling is my favorite thing ever
so it was nostalgic in that way because it brought me back to my childhood."
This spring, her most recent collaboration is with Ila Ceramica, which she worked with to create Objeto
a ceramic massager that makes use of traditional Mexican hand-building techniques
"I started with nails because I love nails
But the idea is for the brand to grow and expand in all areas of your life
I tried my best to make it as universal as possible
and I think I was successful in that," says Alejandro
Furthermore, she said that For Base ($18), a plant-based nail-growth treatment and base coat, is another item that often sells out with people buying it in multiples. "It has five different botanicals to help revitalize your nails, moisturize them, and help them grow. It's amazing post-gel or press-ons."
because a hard nail when you bend it is going to break," she concludes
"So you want something that maybe has some moisture to it
and this helps to grow the nail out and to replenish everything that's lost."

By Elton Alisson | Agência FAPESP – Thecamoebians are among the 30-45 lineages of amoebae known to exist worldwide
they have developed the ability to produce a varyingly shaped outer carapace or shell in which to protect themselves
Named Arcella gandalfi as a tribute to Tolkien’s wizard
the new species of amoeba is described in an article published by the journal Acta Protozoologica
“New amoeba species are very rarely discovered because they’re so tiny and not widely studied
there are very few taxonomists who specialize in this group in Brazil,” said Daniel J
a professor in IB-USP’s Zoology Department and the principal investigator for the project
Lahr began receiving reports of the existence of this species of freshwater microorganism from various parts of Brazil
The number of specimens collected in these regions was so small
that it was impossible to perform a laboratory analysis to make sure that they genuinely represented a new species
Lahr was contacted by Jordana de Carvalho e Féres
a biologist who works for a firm of environmental consultants in Espírito Santo
She specializes in taxonomic identification and population analysis of zooplankton
tiny invertebrates that float freely throughout the seas and other bodies of water
She had found the testate (shelled) amoeba in two samples collected from Amapá and Rio de Janeiro
The sample from Rio de Janeiro contained 180 specimens
They agreed that she would go to Lahr’s lab in São Paulo to train in microscopy techniques and partner with the group of researchers at IB-USP on a description of the new species
“We succeeded in isolating the organism from the samples
performed all the necessary measurements and produced images to make sure it really was a new species,” Lahr said
Their analysis was based on biometric and morphological characterization
They concluded that the characteristic funnel shape of A
gandalfi was unique among species belonging to the genus Arcella
one of the largest genera of testate amoebae
gandalfi ranges from light yellow to brown
and the diameter and height of its conical shell average 81 and 71 micrometers
it is considered large for a single-celled organism
and yet it’s capable of building this funnel-shaped carapace,” Lahr said
Because it is easily identified based on its morphological features and because its geographic distribution appears to be confined to South America
the researchers suggest its use as a new flagship species
A flagship species is a key species for a specific ecosystem or habitat
and it can serve as an icon or emblem of an environmental cause
there are no records of any species resembling A
“The identification of a new species of microorganism in the Southern Hemisphere
is very strong evidence that its geographic distribution is restricted to the region because Northern Hemisphere environments have been studied in far more depth,” he said
“This is especially so for such a conspicuous species with a shape unlike any other.”
Most amoebae in the genus Arcella are less than half the size of A
gandalfi and vary considerably in morphology
typically being hemispherical or disk-shaped
while others are crown-like with denticulations – small ridges resembling bristles or spines around the edges
“The genus Arcella comprises some 200 species and is one of the most diverse genera among thecamoebians,” Lahr said
The researchers do not yet know the exact purpose of the amoeba’s carapace
The classic idea is that the shell-like structure
made of silicon or organic matter secreted by the cell
serves as some form of protection against predators
Lahr does not find this idea very plausible
and we often find their carapaces ingested by a class of protozoans called ciliates
the shell is not protective like armor plating
which are preyed on by animals of the same size.”
One of the researchers’ hypotheses is that the carapace may protect the amoebae not against predators but against dryness: abundant among plankton inhabiting shallow lakes and ponds
these amoebae are frequently left high and dry as water levels fluctuate
“We think they’re able to maintain a humid microenvironment inside the shell when it’s dry outside
by storing even a tiny amount of water,” Lahr said
Another hypothesis is that the carapace affords protection against ultraviolet radiation
so protection against UV rays must be a very important factor,” he said

and the information within may be out of date
Sometimes the most difficult task after winning big at the lottery terminal is convincing family members of your good fortune
Just ask Richmond Hill resident Gennaro (Gerry) Arcella
He decided to give Lightning Lotto a play on Dec
since his take amounted to $140,906.80 after his line of five instant win numbers struck
“I had no idea it was one of those games you can win on the spot,” the food industry worker said
“The store clerk told me I won a big prize
I thought it would be a couple hundred dollars
I was shocked to find out how much I won.”
told his wife and family about his big win
“I told them I couldn’t make it up even if I wanted to.”
Arcella plans to use his winnings to help with his son’s education
probably because I am struggling to believe it’s true.”
The top prize starts at $125,000 and grows with ticket sales until it is won
The winning ticket was purchased at a Petro Canada gas station on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill
