‘All of us make mistakes and it’s important to admit it’
A law professor at UCLA said the United States’ “only hope” is for its military to conduct a coup d’état against the Trump administration in order to stop it from becoming a Russian ally
Peter Arenella tweeted on X over the weekend “at this point
my only hope for the US to avoid becoming an ally to Russia is a violent resistance by our military
Tragic to say that because the military are trained to avoid any politically motivated intervention.”
Arenella followed up by claiming Trump helped prevent such an occurrence by “firing all the Joint Chief of Staff military leaders and replacing them with [his own] military acolytes.”
He added that the country will “get what we deserve by giving Trump a second chance to destroy our democracy.”
After his remarks triggered a swift blowback, including a commenter who tagged new FBI Director Kash Patel, Arenella apparently realized how his original tweet was worded, and so offered an explanation and apology:
AGENCIES 1] I do not advocate a violent military intervention to overthrow our Govt
Such action would only trigger a civil war that would cause further damage to our democracy
2] I am a Quaker who believes violence is never a morally appropriate response unless done in self defense
I did make a mistake in a post where I was speculating about the source of any violent response to our govt abandoning its promise to defend Ukraine
I mistakenly framed the issue by using the words “my only hope.”
Earlier today Arenella tweeted he was “suspending” posts on X for “at least a week” due to his “terminal stupidity and laziness in not editing” the coup-related post
MORE: Profs accuse Trump, Musk of lawlessness, anti-democratic extremism in UMich teach-in
“I deserve criticism for that post written in anger and frustration,” Arenella wrote
I should never post anything in anger that does not reflect my considered judgment
my mea culpa did not diminish the fury even though I sincerely regretted making a mistake
“All I can say in response is that all of us make mistakes and its [sic] important to admit it so we don’t repeat it.”
Arenella offered similar qualified remarks following the first assassination attempt on Trump in July
He tweeted that democracy “was already hanging by a thread,” and now the “iconic picture of Trump raising his fist in defiance with our flag waving behind him will lead to his election and the loss of our democracy.”
He added “without any factual basis” that his “first instinct” upon hearing of the shooting was that Trump staged the whole thing

Mr Arenella ignited the furore of MAGA supporters and Republicans on Saturday after he called for a military intervention and violent resistance to stop the U.S

Mr Arenella asked if any “military heroes” were willing to stage a coup to protect the Constitution that Mr Trump and MAGA supporters were desperately trying to tear down

Some X users tagged the FBI, Secret Service and military chiefs to review Mr Arenella’s posts for action. Other netizens asked the Trump-led administration to axe all federal funding to UCLA as was done to Columbia University last Friday.

He previously stated that President Trump “might be the ANTI-CHRIST,” and also claimed that: “[i]f history of the US Presidency doesn’t end with a fascist

"If you are pushing yourself to attend events for the sake of your partner
it might be useful to have an honest conversation about this with your partner
You may find that your partner is totally okay with you skipping out once you discuss your concerns
you might find ways to compromise together." Conversely
if you're someone who looks forward to attending Pride events
Arenella recommends talking to your partner and forming a solution to meet each other halfway
Kat Arenella how to address a situation where one partner feels pressured to come out or attend events during Pride season
"This is going to depend on the relationship and the individuals involved," Dr
"but I think one of the most foundational pieces here is good communication
It is helpful if the person wanting to attend Pride events can discuss this with their partner
including the importance of this for them."
Attending a Pride parade can hold different meanings for everyone
it's important for the individual to feel that they can share these reasons with the other person
"The same goes for the partner who doesn't want to attend — discuss your reasons with your partner so they can understand where you are coming from," Dr Arenella shares
you can make a shared decision forward that honors both of your needs."
For instance, if you're not ready to come out, perhaps you can compromise with your partner and support the LGBTQ+ community as an ally
you can attend a pre-parade event if the parade itself feels too daunting for you
Arenella suggests joining your partner and their friends for a "Pride-adjacent activity," such as brunch before the parade or dinner and drinks in the evening
check in with each other after to provide care and support," Dr
"Community support is one of the most well-researched predictors of wellbeing for queer folks," Dr
Kat Arenella shares during an exclusive chat with Glam
deciding not to attend any Pride events for the sake of your partner is not necessarily the right move
especially if you attend them to seek community
try compromising and brainstorming other ideas to meet both you and your partner's needs
it is important that you first really understand each other's needs," Dr
and focus on how attending/not attending Pride makes you feel
This can make it a little easier for your partner to really hear and understand you."
consider celebrating Pride on your own by enjoying a Pride-themed date and getting creative
binge-watch a queer TV series or have a karaoke session by belting out songs by your favorite LGBTQ+ artists
You can also go for dinner with friends who also identify as queer
as long as you're bonding with your partner in a way that makes both partners feel accepted and comfortable
"If you are feeling pressured to come out during Pride season
it might be helpful to remind yourself that the spirit of Pride is not actually about being 'out,' Dr Arenella explains
and expression — all values you can have even if you aren't out!"
‘My only hope for the US to avoid becoming an ally to Russia is a violent resistance by our military’

Ironically perhaps, Prof. Arenella is a criminal law moral authority, according to his UCLA bio:
“He is a nationally recognized criminal law and procedure scholar
writing about the relationship between criminal and moral responsibility by exploring competing conceptions of criminal culpability and moral agency at work in immaturity and mental disability defenses (e.g.
His moral agency work in philosophical and legal journals has generated considerable commentary and is frequently cited in ongoing debates about the justifications for criminal punishment
He has also written extensively on the privilege against self incrimination and grand jury practices.”
In 2023, the Globe reported that UC Davis assistant professor of American Studies Jemma DeCristo [formerly Jeramy Decristo
tweeted a very threatening post on October 10 threatening “Zionist” journalists and their kids with a cleaver and an ax:
“One group of people we have easy access to in the US is all these Zionist journalists who spread propaganda & misinformation
The tweet is accompanied by images of a cleaver
There must be something in the water in the University of California system
In 2019, UC Davis professor Joshua Clover called for police to be killed. Following the murder by a convicted criminal of police officer Natalie Corona, 22, a rising star in the police department of Davis, California, the Globe reported:
The Aggie columnist Nick Irvin thought it might be hearsay but he began looking around on Twitter and found these tweets from professor Clover: “I am thankful that every living cop will one day be dead
too many of old age,” showed up on November 27
it’s easier to shoot cops when their backs are turned
And “People think that cops need to be reformed
In similar style, the Sacramento Bee found that in 2015 Clover told the SF Weekly “People think that cops need to be reformed
the UC Davis administration condemned the statements and found it “unconscionable that anyone would condone much less appear to advocate murder.”
And this weekend we have UCLA Criminal Law Professor Peter Arenella posting a tweet saying that the U.S
Military must launch an insurrection against Trump
leading him to attempt a weasle-worded backtrack
He writes:
“To the hundreds of Trump supporters who responded to my post about military intervention: I let my anger/frustration at what the current administration is doing to Ukraine to overwhelm common sense
I should not have posted something that did not reflect any calm consideration.”
“My post about how our only hope is our military intervening triggered Trash loyalists including one person who sent my post to K Patel at the FBI
I do regret the tone of that post which reflected my disgust about Trump removing vital self defense technology
1] I do not believe our military will intervene
2]any violent intervention would likely trigger a civil war which would hurt everyone 3]That post also reflected my disgust that no organized resistance movement[non violent] has developed.”
“please read my last post-I was not advocating for violence but speculating where the source of resistance to Trump et al might come from since Congress and SCT are not likely
I agree with you that anyone who advocated such a disaster would be a fool not qualified to teach”
One X response takes some of the wind out of his sails acknowledging how many top military officers President Barack Obama fired:
Peter Arenella should be investigated and perhaps terminated for his threats against President Trump
Notably, the Gateway Pundit addresses the approximately $900 million in direct federal funding UCLA receives for “a range of contracts and grants,” and another $200 million for overhead
This is the only way to get the attention of deranged academia – cut their funding
So this law professor is rallying support for a military Coup d’état
This person does not deserve to be in their job at U.C.L.A
If there is any doubt that universities are employing Communist professors
It’s amazing how contrite and repetitive they become once they are caught and called out
just tenure showing idiots everywhere how to protect oneself from their own stupidity
pay him a very publicized visit asking for some clarification…
Arrest the creep for sedition: The statutes in place and like criminal conspiracy
So UCLA $900 million in direct federal funding and another $200 million for overhead all paid for by taxpayers
the only way to get their attention is to cut off their funding until demonic mentally ill professors like this one are fired and driven out of academia
All CA UC campuses should be shut down for at least 2 years so the whole mess can be sorted out
The CSU system should scrap most of its liberal arts degrees for 2 years while diverting that funding to real degrees like engineering
I do believe in the value of a liberal arts education and have nothing against offering classes in the humanities
But nobody needs a PhD in women’s studies or a social justice law debris (not a typo) and all the rest of that identity politics garbage
A lot of the “sciences” need to be closely examined to see if they actually help move the ball forward in civilization’s advance
or if they are just jobs programs for environmentalists and other such mutants
The money saved can be used to expand the community colleges and lessen the tuition
the community colleges would need to shed useless offerings as well and undergo a thorough DOGE’ing
California government in general needs a thorough DOGE’ing
I am so sick of the rot in the California University system
My dad was one and he had his HANDS FULL with the Global Boilers of which he had the dissenting opinion
So many just blow with what is fashionable
teach people about the concept of Constitutional Republic
convert some of the schools to pure trade schools
Stop funneling people into useless degrees that only cause trouble and leave them parasites of the apparatus
The rot was there in the 90s when I went and it just got worse
I had a friend at SF State..for Goodness Sake that had a class called “sexual variations” that showed be$stiality movies under the guise of “education”…I kid you not
and I’m in total agreement with “usable skillsets” being an achievable target
not the worthless and destructive nonsense that these institutions promote
GITMO would be an appropriate facility for these anti-American “academics.”

My apartment. I have two rooms, one where I work on my music, and another where I'm communicating with the outside world and hustling for work. I’m happiest where I write music, but I am grateful for the second space where I can have complete separation.
2/6What are the essentials you need to get your job done?
My pen and inkwell, my phonograph, and New York. I listen to music on the phonograph and transcribe it. I find the music by scouring flea markets and estate sales, and little hole in the walls out in the middle of nowhere. It’s sleuth work.
I include New York because of the wonderful inspiration it affords: the beautiful mélange of people and cultures, and the frenetic energy. When I moved here at 17, I had nothing. I struggled, I played in the subway, worked in bars, you name it. Because it's tough, it forced me to get organized. It taught me that I had to be more than a musician--I had to become a businessman in order to survive.
Taylor Jewell3/6**Are there any rituals you have before you sit down and work? **
Having a glass of St-Germain is helpful, but just getting down and writing is an escape in itself. I didn’t compose anything for five years after my mom died because the place where that music came from was intermingled with the pain of losing her. As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to stay disciplined and let the art pull me through difficult times.
Taylor Jewell4/6How did you become involved in music?
I've wanted to be a musician and composer ever since I was a child. My goal is to harken back to a simpler age when people just wanted to go out and dance and enjoy good music. So I found myself in the business of producing events and also running an orchestra in New York City.
Taylor Jewell5/6**What motivates you on a daily basis? **
At the end of the day, if I don’t play, I don’t have food on the table. It’s really a motivation of survival. I am the product I am selling -- it's my flesh and blood, my voice, and my fingers that I’m selling. I’m just trying to organize myself more so that when I do start to settle down I can have somewhat of a comfortable life.
Taylor Jewell6/6**What continues to inspire you in your work? **
1920's jazz. The Twenties were a time for modernity and innovation and experimentation. We look back and think of the Twenties as this romantic time, but it wasn’t romantic at all. It was about cutting all ties with the past and looking forward and creating something completely new. That spirit's in the music and that’s how I try to be in my own life—I don’t try to be “vintage.” That’s farcical. I simply am who I am--I’m not stuck in one era.

A second generation of Arlington Heights restaurant royalty has set up shop in an aging strip mall and is serving well-crafted
familiar Italian fare in a family-friendly atmosphere under the name Via Arenella
work in the restaurant business his whole life
He watched them spend long nights on their feet serving others
And toiling in a steamy kitchen for 14 hours a day turning out food for the faithful that followed the couple from Arlington Heights to Palatine and back again
Franco and his two brothers spent after-school hours and weekends pitching in in the kitchen
busing tables and learning the business as much by osmosis as by watching and doing
“I never thought it was something I wanted to do when I was in the kitchen,” said Franco
now 22 and studying hospitality management at DePaul University in Chicago
So with their parents' blessing (the couple walked away from the family's last restaurant venture in summer 2016), Franco, Mario Jr., 19, and Alfonso “Fonzo,” 25, sought out a spot in Arlington Heights and opened Via Arenella in December
Franco tends to the front of the house while Mario Jr
Fonzo has his father's culinary skills and has taken over his father's command of the kitchen
Mario and Rosa haven't stepped aside entirely
“We're trying to finish teaching them the trade so we can retire,” Mario said
While 90 percent of the menu will be familiar to longtime patrons - yes the chicken Marsala and linguine gamberi have not disappeared - the setting will not
The Old World Italian village motif has given way to a sleek
modern setting that bears little resemblance to the space's former life as a neighborhood watering hole
A black brick textured wall anchors the space and provides a bold backdrop to the restaurant's red logo
A bar with seating for 18 provides a comfortable spot for those waiting for a table on a busy weekend or for friends enjoying a beer and a hockey game after work
the building tantrum of an unruly child goes almost unnoticed
On a recent Saturday night my bestie and I settled in to a table
thankful for our reservation as we watched others being turned away
With a glass of prosecco in hand (the wine list offers glasses for $7 to $11 and bottles
I selected the eggplant crostini appetizer to start
I've learned to stay away from bruschetta in the dead of winter when tomato quality can be less than desirable
And I wasn't in the mood for any of the seafood appetizers (grilled baby octopus and sauteed mussels among them)
possibly because the odor of fish was heavy when I walked in
Tender chunks of eggplant and smooth fresh mozzarella played nicely with sweet tomato sauce and the garlicky toasts
Minestrone was a no-brainer on that chilly evening
and the soup hit all the traditional markers with a pleasant blend of herbs and no one veggie or bean trying to hog the spotlight
kept to tradition with beautiful curls of Parmesan
I'm putting off trying the asparagus and Gorgonzola salad until the calendar turns to spring
served in a buttery white wine sauce and topped with Fontina cheese
as did the tortellini and prosciutto with mushrooms and peas
yet I went with the evening's fish special
I wasn't immediately impressed by the grouper limone as a bone interrupted my first bite
Subsequent fork fulls revealed well-cooked fish in a bright lemony sauce
That pleasant acidicness was a nice foil to the pasta carbonara
The dish was expertly prepared with crisp bits of pancetta
and the eggs created a rich coating for the al dente spaghetti instead of turning it into a scramble
I would have liked more vegetables on the plate and didn't realize until later that grilled vegetables are available as a side dish
yet the waitress forgot her promise of extra plates
prompting my companion to grab a few from the busers station
We also had to flag her down for a fresh beverage to enjoy with our entrees
We were bummed when told the limoncello cake that we eyed upon entering was sold out
but we quickly got over it when we bit into the moist
Other sweet endings include cannoli and tiramisu
I popped in a few days later for takeout pizzas and was impressed with the Biancaneve
The hand-tossed crust gets brushed with olive oil and smothered with mozzarella cheese
Dollops of ricotta and fresh basil leaves dot the pizza before it hits the oven
ultra cheesy combination you're not likely to soon forget
My sons were equally impressed by the more mainstream pepperoni version
I liked that the crust was thin without being cracker crisp
Chicago-style deep dish and New York-style pies also are available
and I happily report that giardineria is available as a topping
Italian beef and sausage as well as chicken and eggplant Parmesan sandwiches are on the menu
So props to the Longobardi boys for continuing their parents' legacy of convivial dining and introducing Via Arenella to new folks in town

Despite playing the bulk of their games on the road
Arenella and the Eagles downed tough squads like North Dorchester
After holding a comfortable lead in the Regional Championship
the team allowed Patterson Mill to come back and end their chances of winning a title
But it was still a “magical” season for the Snow Hill coach

but everyone’s been a Snow Hill kid for three or four years
Arenella said he’s also enjoyed the county rivalries with schools like Stephen Decatur and Pocomoke
Having a good relationship with coaches B.J
he and his team would always walk away with more appreciation for their opponents at the end of contest — and vice versa
“We had some epic battles,” Arenella said
and just trying to get kids to think less about themselves and more about the team.”
Although he’ll be stepping away from the court
Arenella will still be present at Snow Hill as an employee of the school should his players need him
He said he’ll always be around to offer advice
help with workouts and give kids access to the gym
expect to see Arenella in the stands come basketball season
rooting on his favorite team in a sea of maroon and silver
“I’m still an avid basketball fan
and a big fan of Snow Hill,” Arenella said
I was very fortunate and extremely grateful for the opportunity
Though Arenella is at peace with his decision
the former Snow Hill coach did say he could see a future where he’s back on the court — but don’t expect that to happen any time soon
“Never say never,” Arenella said
“By no means is the door closed.”

Peter Arenella was a legal consultant to ABC News during the Simpson trial
he disputes the prevailing opinion that the jurors' race influenced their decision and takes the media to task for encouraging the public's rush to judgment after the verdict
"[The jury] isn't supposed to do what the public wants
They're supposed to reach a verdict based only on the evidence before them," says Arenella
and they were absolutely crucified for [it.]" He also criticizes the way the media discussed the role of race in the trial
and summarizes the overall negative affect the media had on the criminal justice system
saying it turned the process into a "Roman circus" for "mass entertainment" where the audience acted as the "thirteenth juror." This interview was conducted on April 1
many aspects of our present coverage of high-profile trials are very much a product of the O.J
The way in which criminalists do their work has been changed and altered as a result of the O.J
The way the media covers high-profile trials reflects lessons learned or lessons not learned in the O.J
The system was delegitimated by the public's reaction to the verdict and the public's reaction to the jury
instead of looking at the trial process and seeing how an adversarial trial can work where each side has equal resources
most of the public focused on the not-guilty verdict
[saw] a jury-nullification explanation for the jury verdict
and concluded that there was something very wrong about our criminal justice system if an obvious murderer could be acquitted for the wrong reasons
Why did most of the public view the verdict in that light
I think the media itself is responsible for legitimating the jury-nullification explanation of the acquittal
I think the jurors acted in complete good faith
and they acquitted because they found a reasonable doubt
While many of us might not have shared their reasonable doubts
I think it was inappropriate for the media to challenge the good faith of the jurors and to tell a very different story about their deliberations and their reasoning
What do you think actually happened inside the jury deliberation
you have a case in which the jurors couldn't trust the messenger
and therefore they had a great deal of trouble believing in the message
Police lied from the beginning of this case to the end
and I'm not talking just about Detective [Mark] Fuhrman lying on the stand about making racist remarks
This case started with a preliminary hearing in which the lead detective made an obvious lie about why they entered Mr
Simpson's property -- pretending he wasn't a suspect -- when the average citizen probably appreciates that in a domestic murder case
the surviving spouse has to be a suspect [and] has to be eliminated
And yet the police lied about their motivation for a warrantless entry on to Mr
and they stuck with that lie throughout the trial
So when you have police officers who are lying on the stand
thinking they need to [invoke] Fourth Amendment purposes
and then their stories have to conform with their initial lies
And the jurors correctly saw that some of the police were not testifying honestly
that when police officers and criminalists and others were presenting perhaps quite reliable evidence
it was easy for jurors to dismiss the probative significance of some of that evidence because they didn't trust the messenger
I think that the media framed the discourse about the trial from the very beginning
as basically raising two questions: Either the police framed an innocent man and acted corruptly
or the police did everything right and O.J
which I tried to suggest from the very beginning
which is more nuanced: that the police perhaps mishandled some evidence; there might have been some incompetence; there might have been some corruption; there certainly was police perjury on the stand
But that didn't necessarily mean that there wasn't some reliable
Is that what you think the jury came to believe
there really were three elements to this case
One was the timeline; one was the story of motive -- why Mr
there was the matter of physical evidence linking him to the murders
The prosecution's most compelling case concerned the physical evidence
the DNA evidence was extremely hard to follow
most of the media slept through the dog days of the trial dealing with DNA testimony
The jurors themselves did a terrific job trying to pay attention
but the prosecution's best evidence was the evidence that was most hard to understand [and] the most easily attacked by the defense
did a terrific job of giving the jury little lifeboats to understand some of the evidence
if it couldn't follow the technical aspects of the challenges to the evidence
to think about the problem very simplistically: If the police screwed up in gathering the evidence
perhaps that meant that the evidentiary results were corrupted
Only a real expert in DNA evidence could discriminate between legitimate challenges to DNA evidence in that case and challenges that were based on speculation or exaggerated hypotheses
so the jury focused more on the evidence they could understand: the timeline and motive evidence
The domestic violence evidence was totally unpersuasive
and once the jury lost credibility with the story of how it happened
[it] became easier for them to dismiss [it]
I think that the average juror wants to know why someone would take a human life
where you have a well-known celebrity defendant that was if not respected
certainly looked at with some sense of affection by many segments of the community prior to this trial
So you have the question of why would someone who seemed to have it all do such a terrible thing
and that's where the domestic violence evidence came in
And the evidence presented at the trial was incredibly weak
nothing like the domestic violence evidence presented by the media to the general public
The story of domestic violence at the trial only involved one incidence of violence five years before this incident
And the story of Simpson trying to control Nicole [Brown Simpson] was not very persuasive at all
it came out that the last attempted reconciliation was initiated by Nicole
So the prosecution told a really bad story about domestic violence that simply wasn't believable
And to the extent that you had jurors who had witnessed domestic violence in their own lives
they might not have reacted with such incredible strength as perhaps some of the public might have reacted to the 911 calls and to the other evidence that was actually presented
Do you think the outcome of the trial would have been different if the jury had been presented with the same evidence of domestic violence that the public saw
the evidence of domestic violence was not overwhelming
and even some of the material not presented to the jury still wouldn't by itself lead to a conviction
then why in fact had the acts of violence de-escalated during the last few years that they were separated
The pattern wasn't of escalating violence; the pattern was of violence that was decreasing in its incidence
and that is not a story consistent with someone using violence to control an ex-spouse
they went wrong from the very beginning of the case in terms of how they handled the initial decision to charge Mr
There was no reason for the prosecution to rush to a trial
They could have started a grand jury investigation and then carefully got all their ducks in a row that looked at not only the physical evidence
but other evidence that could have been gathered
Evidence that was gathered for the subsequent civil trial could have been gathered in a reliable timely fashion for the criminal prosecution
His celebrity status explains why he wasn't arrested very early on in the case when the average defendant
the average defendant might have been interrogated far more effectively by police officers after the arrest
and the detectives handled him not like a criminal suspect
Why was the public so angry with how this case was handled
The case became a metaphor for race relations in this country
primarily because the media itself generated that perspective before the trial ever started
a New Yorker article talked about how the defense was going to play the "race card" and attack prosecution witnesses and police officers as racist
But the message was that this was a totally inappropriate thing for the defense to do; that this was all about jury nullification
The media didn't educate the public about the possibility that race could play very different nuanced roles in the case; that the racial composition of the jury might aid the jurors in making credibility judgments about the believability of witnesses
The media didn't educate the public about the possibility that race could do anything but play a negative role in the case
Race played a very complicated role in this case
the experience of African American jurors aided them in seeing through the lies of Detective Mark Fuhrman and Detective [Philip] Vannatter before the white media ever figured out that the witnesses were lying
Perhaps because of their experience with police officers
African American jurors had a lower evidentiary threshold for believability in police conspiracy theories
The point simply is that race played a nuanced role
How did the media discuss the role of race in the trial
instead of educating the public about a very complicated issue
simply repeats the public's own conventional wisdom and ignorance
Simpson case is it simply reflected back onto the white majority
Public opinion polls made it quite clear that most white Americans believed Simpson was obviously guilty before the trial ever started
Most white Americans feared that the defense would do something unethical and use racism to get a black jury -- a predominantly African American jury -- to acquit an obviously guilty defendant
That was the frame of public discourse before the trial ever started
Everything was fit into that frame in terms of how the media covered the trial
So what role did race play in the jury's deliberations
it's ironic that we have a constitutional right in this country to a jury
at least a jury pool that reflects the ethnic diversity from which the jury is drawn
because people's different social experiences
tremendously colors their socially lived experience
but through the social filters of our own experience
you have a very different view of police authority
probably a much more complicated one in which the police can be your friend and the police can be your victimizer
where the police basically protect you as a victim of crime or perhaps on occasion give you a traffic ticket
Can you give me an example of how a juror's race could help his or her understanding of the facts of the case
A classic example of how race improved the jury's deliberations about the credibility of witnesses occurred during F
Lee Bailey's cross-examination of Mark Fuhrman
Bailey's cross-examination of Mark Fuhrman asked several critical questions
whose answers led the African American jurors to appreciate long before white America that Fuhrman was lying about his racist past
Bailey asked Mark Fuhrman on cross-examination
"Do you care if people believe mistakenly that you have racist beliefs?" And Fuhrman said matter-of-factly
I don't care." "Do you care that people mistakenly believe that you are willing to frame an innocent man by planting incriminating evidence against him?" And Fuhrman reddened and showed a sense of annoyance and anger and replied
that matters to me." Two African American jurors immediately looked at each other with disgust
because they understood immediately that those differing answers reflected the fact that Fuhrman probably was a racist
White America and perhaps the one white juror needed to hear those tapes to understand that Mr
but the African American jurors already knew
So white America and black America saw that piece of evidence very differently
Lee Bailey's cross-examination of Mark Fuhrman was "Where's the beef?" Big letdown
if one was looking at the African American jurors' reactions to some of Mr
Fuhrman's questions and answers to Bailey's questions
one saw that African American jurors had already concluded that Mark Fuhrman was lying on the stand and was a racist by his different answers
For white America and for the one white juror on the jury panel
it took the tapes to demonstrate Fuhrman's racism
but Bailey's cross-examination was effective at the very moment it was made for those African American jurors
led the jurors to believe he was lying long before the tapes were presented in evidence
you can't trust the messenger because the messenger has lied to you
and that means that you really can't trust the message they're presenting to you
So if you have police officers that are lying to you
there's no reason for you to believe that all of the physical evidence that they've collected and presented is as reliable as they suggest
There's reason for you to fear incompetence and worse: corruption of the physical evidence
And you certainly can't trust the story they're telling about Mr
I think the prosecution frankly played into the defense's hands
before all the physical evidence had been collected
and they started the trial with not the physical evidence linking Simpson to the murders
but with a story of domestic violence going back to 1989
To start a trial on murder that shows not how Mr
Simpson did the murder but suggested why he might be motivated to do the murder
to start the trial that way is to start the trial with character assassination
but the story of domestic violence didn't work
Simpson of his legitimacy in the eyes of the jury
What was the public's perception of the defense's strategy
the American public doesn't seem to understand the role of the criminal defense counsel
Even my first-year students ask me frequently
"How can you as a criminal defense attorney ..
represent a guilty person in good conscience?" The point of an adversarial system is for the defense to force the prosecution to persuade a jury beyond a reasonable doubt of the defendant's guilt
And a defense counsel's ethical role is to make the prosecution satisfy that burden of proof by challenging the credibility and persuasiveness of the prosecution's evidence
Defense counsel can't knowingly put on perjured testimony
but to challenge the credibility of prosecution witnesses
including showing that a prosecution witness might have racist attitudes
One of the sad ironies of this case is that one of the defense lawyers
had the audacity to say that he needed to distance himself from the verdict and the process because Johnnie Cochran had played the race card from the bottom of the deck
And that was just itself an example of how even a defense lawyer was legitimating this misconception of the defense counsel and the defense acting unethically
when in fact they did a terrific job in that trial of forcing the prosecution to match its burden
What impact did the media have on the trial
It's impossible to separate the media from the O.J
Simpson trial because of the constant feedback loop between the media coverage of the trial and the trial's daily proceedings
we had many examples in which Judge [Lance] Ito
would do things that a trial judge would never do
simply because he was aware that the public was watching
He would let defense lawyers ramble on far longer than the normal trial judge would because he didn't want to create the appearance of cutting them off inappropriately to the American viewing public
So we had constant examples of how the media interacted with the trial day by day
The public's perception of how race was playing into this trial had an extraordinary impact on the trial
One of the ironies of the Simpson legacy is that the trial and the acquittal in the public eye showed you how bad our system functions and how racism infects our system in ways that prevent the just conviction of criminal defendants
The reality is the Simpson trial showed you an adversarial trial that actually worked
a process in which the parties could look at the evidence and fight about the credibility of witnesses on an equal footing
The public focused on the verdict; they didn't like it
But the process itself was a fair one; it was a fair adversarial trial
And the irony is that most American criminal defendants don't get even a day in court
But the public doesn't focus on the fairness of the process; they focus simply on whether the verdict corresponds with their own sense of whether justice was done
Why did African Americans appear so joyous when the verdict was read
I think it's an exaggeration to say all African Americans were happy with the verdict or all whites were upset with the verdict
While there was a racial divide in this country concerning the verdict
I don't think the racial divide was adequately explained by the media
There were many African Americans who were pleased that the jurors understood that police officers were lying to them
were pleased that a jury didn't trust the messenger
That doesn't mean that they were happy that a murderer was being set free
It doesn't mean they necessarily believed in Mr
One thing the American public forgets is a trial isn't necessarily about truth
The verdict isn't "innocent"; the verdict is "not guilty." The prosecution's burden of proof is beyond a reasonable doubt
Several of the jurors explained afterwards that they suspected Mr
but they weren't shown it beyond a reasonable doubt
That's an action and a comment of a juror that understands their responsibility and is doing their job
the American public didn't understand that
And the answer is very simple: [If] the prosecution doesn't prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt
That's not jury nullification; that's how our system is supposed to function
Read more about the role of truth in criminal trials in a chapter from the book Reasonable Doubts by Simpson defense attorney Alan Dershowitz
Were there any long-term effects on the criminal justice system
The verdict in the civil trial was used by the white majority
and the criminal trial jury got it wrong," when in reality the civil trial reflected an appropriate verdict based on the preponderance of the evidence
It was a totally different trial involving different information and a different burden of proof
There are good and bad things that have come from the Simpson criminal trial experience
we have criminalists who do their jobs better
The LAPD [crime] lab and labs across the country learned valuable lessons about how not to collect evidence
about how to do their jobs in a more professional and competent fashion
We have defense lawyers across the country that learned valuable lessons from Barry Scheck and the defense team in how to attack the reliability of DNA evidence so that lawyers across the country went to school based on things that they saw in the Simpson trial
So there are a lot of positives that have come from the trial
But my own view is that the negatives that come from the Simpson legacy easily outweigh those positives
The negative legacy of the Simpson trial focuses mostly on the public's perception of our criminal justice system
the public's misunderstanding of the defense counsel's role
which I believe was a problem before the Simpson case [and] was only aggravated by the distrust generated by the media's framing of the defense playing the race card from the bottom of the deck
So the public's understanding of the defense counsel's role
was probably confused even further by their reaction to the defense counsel's function in the Simpson trial
[This] is ironic since the defense counsel in Simpson performed admirably and showed the adversarial system as it is supposed to function in a criminal trial
and yet they were harpooned for that by the public's reaction to it
I think that the media's role in how it covers the criminal justice system has taken a turn for the worse
because we've really gotten to a point in this country where we see criminal trials as forms of mass entertainment
It's as if every next high-profile trial is the next Roman circus
and let's all watch and be entertained by it
So we've disconnected from the reality of what these criminal trials are supposed to be about
and instead we convert them into theaters of entertainment
We even now have actors repeating the trial the day after so that people can get more entertainment from it
Trials aren't supposed to be entertainment for the masses
They're supposed to be serious public processes in which juries are asked to do a very difficult job
And instead of respecting the job that jurors do
We in the public act as the 13th juror when we're not in a position to know what the jurors know
and we feel entitled to express our opinions about guilt or innocence based on what I don't know
Did the American public act as the so-called 13th juror in this trial
After the criminal jury's acquittal verdict was announced
that clearly the American public -- and I was referring to the white majority -- were acting as the 13th juror
and they were rejecting the jury's verdict
I was dismayed to see how much the media was encouraging the American viewing public to act as the 13th juror
They're not in the courtroom; they don't see what the jurors see
Even watching a trial on television is not the same thing as being in the courtroom
You don't see the nonverbal behavior of witnesses in the same way as you see it on a television camera
You don't see some of the photographs which showed the jurors the grisly nature
the violent nature of the murder and the jurors' reaction to it
their sense of the humanity of the victims
The whole jury-nullification story would have lost a lot of its force if the American public had been in the courtroom and seen the jurors tear up with a sense of desperation and agony when they looked at the crime-scene photos and when they looked at the surviving family members come into the courtroom every day with sympathy and compassion
The jury nullification of the acquittal wouldn't have gotten off the ground if the average American had seen that
It was an example of how television and the media can break down the wall that's supposed to be there between a courtroom and public mass opinion
A criminal trial is supposed to be conducted in a particular way with a sense of separation from the rest of the world
The jury isn't a democratically accountable decision maker
They're not supposed to reflect majority viewpoints; they're not supposed to do what the public wants
They're supposed to reach a verdict based only on the evidence before them
and they were absolutely crucified for what they did
And yet they acted in completely good faith
Their lives were interrupted for over 14 months
the American public's reaction was they were stupid
and they were sending an inappropriate message and freeing a guilty murderer
Can you talk more about the blurring of lines between the media and the legal system in this case
[author and media critic] Neil Postman wrote a book called Amusing Ourselves to Death
and a fundamental thesis of this book is how television has just transformed our culture
And I have to say that my experience as a legal pundit working for ABC News certainly confirmed that thesis
When I look at what happened after the Simpson trial
when I look at how [prosecuting attorney] Marcia Clark became a reporter for Entertainment Tonight and [prosecuting attorney] Christopher Darden started to write mystery novels
and the blurring of the line between legal actors and people who are working in our entertainment media world
it just shows you how much that trial has transformed our culture in a variety of significant
Criminal trials become forums for mass entertainment
and high-profile actors in these criminal trials then go on to have careers in the media
and the viewing audience has gotten to know them and sees them as friendly
But it happens in the media coverage itself
where you had The New York Times trying to keep up with the [National] Enquirer in terms of scoops about what a potential witness might say
competent coverage and what's happening in the courtroom versus the desire to make a reputation as an aggressive media scoop about what might happen in the future got completely blurred
Legal pundits began to make predictions about how the jury might vote
at the end of the trial -- something that wasn't appropriate or within their expertise
They should be commenting simply on the legal machineries in a way that makes the system accessible to the viewing public
which is that television converts everything it shows into a form of basic entertainment
which is fine if what television is covering is itself supposed to be entertainment
But it's not fine if what television is covering is supposed to have an important
(WZTV) — There is a new effort to close the homeless camp under the Jefferson Street Bridge in downtown Nashville
The city tried to do this in June of 2021 and is now making another run at it
Jessica Arenella has been living on the streets of Nashville for six months and she’s been living at the Jefferson Street Bridge camp for the last few weeks
“I mean it looks like tents from the outside but it’s home,” Arenella explained
Arenella says she likes it here because it’s a supportive community where people really look out for one another
“Sometimes you know when that person two tents down has an extra propane tank and is going to save your life that night because it’s freezing cold and 9 degree weather,” Arenella emphasized
Arenella along with the others at this camp may be losing their "homes" in just one week
The city is working with the Salvation Army to close this homeless camp by mid-February
They both told FOX 17 News that most of the people under this bridge have been connected with better housing options, but the non-profit Open Table Nashville does not believe this is true
FOX 17 News' Kaitlin Miller asked the Executive Director of Open Table
“They claim they’re going to house these people or put them in facilities
because they’re not telling us where those places are,” Foster said
Foster emphasizes she does not want people living under this bridge either
“We want them to be in safe affordable housing with four walls and a roof
That’s what we want but until we have enough for everyone where else are they supposed to go,” Foster emphasized
The Salvation Army said individuals under Jefferson Street Bridge have already been connected to mobile navigation centers
They added that if they still have individuals who are working with them but are unable to find housing solutions through these channels
they are working on an alternate sheltering solution
Arenella wants a roof over her head after living on the streets for the last six months
“It’s always nice to have some place that’s home
That’s really hard to do in a tent because it’s in the open
You have to fight the elements,” Arenella explained
She told FOX 17 News she does not have a housing arrangement yet

Can you imagine anything more delightful than sailing from Manhattan
and heading for an uninhabited island filled with the ghostly remnants of a deserted army base; and once there
to step back in time to an authentic lawn party from the Jazz Age
and dance the afternoon away under the summer sun
to the sounds of a live orchestra straight from the 1920s
such an elegant event is entirely possible
The Jazz Age Lawn Party has been the swinging

At the heart of all this swish and sophisticated splendour
and the Lawn Party currently enjoying it’s twelfth year
The Clover Club is one of Brooklyn’s most elegant cocktail spots
and with a cocktail menu as extensive as its contents are well made
Arenella sings and plays here every Wednesday
We’re meeting Arenella as he wraps up a photoshoot at the Club for a line of bespoke suits made for him by legendary men’s wear designer
Arenella is equal parts Clark Gable and Bix Beiderbecke
the Stars and You” feel as if Al Bowlly had survived the Blitz

“The first lawn party in 2005 was a chance occurrence”
“I was hired to play an event on the island
simply looked around me and became enamoured with the setting
It was such a special place removed from the city.”
A conversation with the island’s groundskeeper and superintendent saw Arenella soon host a small lawn party for friends
picnicking afternoon rapidly grew to became one of Manhattan’s most glittering events in the summer diary
and today it draws thousands of well-heeled revellers to the island
I’ve been collecting records since I was a child
old records were how I developed my love of jazz.” Starting with the trombone aged just six
Arenella developed a style that draws upon seminal trombonist Jack Teagarden
with the English ballroom sophistication of Ray Noble
but the Lawn Party offers the rare opportunity to enjoy the lush sound of a full jazz orchestra
playing tunes transcribed by Arenella himself from the original recordings
“Everything you’re hearing at Governor’s Island is one of a kind”
But hand in hand with his love of old music
is a dedication to the style and elegance of the band leaders of the era
“I wanted to learn about the surrounding elements….what made the musicians of that era tick
Searching for clothes that evoked the heyday of male elegance of the 1920’s and 1930’s
Arenella recently teamed up with legendary designer and author Alan Flusser
Flusser, who dressed Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s iconic Wall Street, was once one of Pierre Cardin’s head designers, and who for many years had a custom design shop in Saks Fifth Avenue, and is a lifetime member of the Best Dressed List. For the man-about-town who likes to dress well, Flusser’s custom tailoring shop is at the top of the list.
The suits designed for Arenella are inspired by the Savile Row drape cuts made famous by two icons of the elegant gentleman; the Duke of Windsor and Fred Astaire
who’s dedicated search for authenticity in his music is mirrored by his appearance
the collaboration is a match made in sartorial heaven
“We’re excited to make clothes for a man who not only appreciates their tailoring provenance but who also wears them so stylishly”
The partnership was the brainchild of Alan Flusser Custom’s most recent hire
the menswear writer and videographer Andrew Yamato
Yamato immediately thought of his friend Arenella
Yamato himself is part of a small circle in New York who like to dress from a bye-gone era
“I’ve been going to the Jazz Age Lawn Party since 2008”
“The Lawn Party has always provided a safe and consequence-free environment to let indulge one’s inner vintage dork – hats
spectators and all!” For men like Arenella
but a dedicated adherence to simple enjoyment in dressing elegantly
And it is this embracing of all things swish and sophisticated that is at the heart of the Jazz Age Lawn Party
This year’s last Jazz Age Lawn Party of the summer will be held on Governor’s Island in June
So put on your finest white linen suit or beaded flapper dress
for there’s no more magical place to be in the city

the debonair bandleader and singer Michael Arenella and his eleven-piece Dreamland Orchestra have been drawing crowds with performances of dance music from the nineteen-twenties
Arenella told me that he favors music from that period because
jazz from the twenties is “like some ancient language that
will shed light on everything that came after.”
Arenella finds much of his material by digging through estate sales and junk shops for old 78s of forgotten jazz recordings
“Some of them are so old that they don’t even have stickers or labels
and a lot of times I don’t even know the name of the band or the song,” he says

Michael’s love of Jazz Age culture inspired him to throw the first Jazz Age Lawn Party in 2005 for an intimate group of friends and fellow torch carriers of a bygone era

his orchestra and his admirers it was all genuine

OASIS UNCHANINED — (Via Deadline) Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher are preparing to reunite on stage for the first time in 16 years
with fans clamoring for tickets for the UK band’s comeback tour this summer
The previously warring brothers have both said they’ve put their differences behind them to go on the road with stadium gigs in the UK
But it seems the maxim “Good walls make good neighbors” has not gone ignored by the band and their management
with The Sun newspaper reporting that arrangements have been put in place to keep the two brothers and their entourages separate backstage at all UK gigs
The Sun reports that the Gallagher brothers have been given completely separate green rooms and after-party spaces
“Each of them had a VIP list where their friends and famous fans could buy their tickets
“But depending on which brother you got your ticket off; it’s their green room and after-party you’re invited to
if you’re on Noel’s list but fancy going across to say hello to Liam
it’s going to be a case of trying to blog entry
It seems like they are totally separate events.”
This move follows the brothers’ definitive bust-up backstage in Paris in 2009
when they fell out so badly Noel refused to go onstage with his brother and soon left the band
bringing to a close an era of one of the UK’s most successful ever bands
Liam and Noel Gallagher have gone on to enjoy success with other musical projects
but nothing approaching the scale of Oasis
The brothers are preparing to start rehearsing for their string of gigs which kick off in Cardiff on July 4
to film an ad for adidas inside a small working men’s club in north London
The brothers were inside the venue for just over an hour
but stayed long enough for a local to complain about the noise
but this sure sounds like a tour for a quick money grab

A University of California Los Angeles professor is apologizing for suggesting a military coup to stop President Trump from further aligning the U.S
The criminal law professor, Peter Arenella, spark controversy Saturday when he posted on X: "At this point
to avoid becoming an ally to Russia is a violent resistance by our military
Tragic to say that because the military is trained to avoid any politically motivated intervention."
and increasingly in the early weeks of his second term
has said he has good working relationship with Russia President Vladimir Putin
whose country has long been considered one of the United States' biggest global threats.
Trump most recently has appeared to try to negotiate with Russia and much as Ukraine in an effort to end the countries' three-year-long war.
After facing backlash on X, including from one person who allegedly sent the professor's post to FBI Director Kash Patel, Arenella apologized Sunday, saying he doesn't think a military coup is a good idea and regrets "that post."
However, he also argued that some people had misread his posts, claiming he "never advocated for this option." By Monday, he appeared to take full responsibility, writing that he won't post on X "for at least a week" because of his "terminal stupidity and laziness in not editing a very misleading post."
UCLA as of Monday afternoon had not released a statement on the matter
and did not respond to a Just the News request for comment
Arenella has a history of making anti-Trump comments on X, going as far as suggesting the president is an antichrist who puts the "last nail in the coffin of our democracy," according to Campus Reform, a conservative news website focused on higher education
