While Palm Springs is famous for mid-century modern homes and movie stars
it is also known for classic and collectable cars
All go together like palm trees and sunny skies in the desert
Keeping car culture alive in Palm Springs are three car dealers that specialize in classic
They have thrived here for 30 to 40 years each
boasting a combined experience of more than 100 years of selling rare and collectable vehicles
Not many cities can make a claim like that
the dealers have made a major contribution to Southern California’s world-renowned car culture
Another reason is the many classy car events held in the Coachella Valley
The largest happens to be Keith McCormick’s “Collector Car” sale and show
The twice-a-year outdoor event is a magnet for throngs of car lovers
sellers and people who enjoy balmy skies and taking pictures
It draws people from all walks of life who stroll between rows of cars under balmy skies
The open-air weekend event is held on seven acres besides the Palm Springs Convention Center, featuring more than 400 cars, trucks and motorcycles. It is free and open to the public today from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (See sidebar for details or go to www.Classic-CarAuction.com)
Stars and Cars“Blame it on the good weather and good roads
the type of people who live and vacation here” who love to tool around town in fancy cars
who has held huge cars sales in Palm Springs for the past 35 years
The three Palm Springs car dealers all tell stories about movie stars and celebrities and their cars
owner of Palm Springs Collector Car Auction
Arzano has owned One Eleven Vintage Cars for 41 years
He remembers stars who lived in Palm Springs and the cars he sold on consignment for them: “Frank Sinatra had a 1978 Rolls Royce and an Excalibur
Sonny Bono had a 1932 red hot rod,” he said
“would not be seen in a fancy collectable car,” McCormick said
which helps makes him inconspicuous around town.”
Hollywood movies have glorified California cars
“American Graffiti,” starred then barely known actors Harrison Ford
She played the illusive blonde cruising around in a beautiful 1956 Ford Thunderbird throughout the film
which has been in business on East Ramon Road for 33 years
some of which command a $300,000 price tag
Vintage cars are typically the 1920’s and '30 Ford Model A and Packard
American cars like Ford or Dodge and some European cars like the MG or Jaguar
Muscle cars are like the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac GTO with large V-8 and Hemi engines
Hot Rods are the vintage and classic cars modified with souped up engines
chopped and channeled bodies and bold paint jobs
Rat Rods are made up of leftover parts from hot rods
“Owning a classic car excites the youth in people
even if they are old,” McCormick said
All three car dealers noted the same recent trend: Younger buyers are searching for newer cars
It’s not just the senior citizens collecting cars from the 1940’s and 50‘s.
“For the Gen X collectors (age in the 40’s and 50’s)
much newer cars like a mid-70’s Datsun 240Z are highly collectable and going up in value.” Each generation seems to resonate with the cars that were popular when they attended high school
college or what they grew up watching on TV.
Some retirees still prefer a newer late model car
which they store in the garage of their second home just to drive in the desert
Arzano keeps an inventory of Mercedes
which he also sells on the weekends at College of the Desert and in Palm Springs
The three Palm Springs car dealers are old friends rather than fierce competitors
Both Arzano and Janssens sell cars at McCormick’s event
which draws buyers in person and online from around the country and around the world

The emotional appeal of a classic car is undeniable
Be it sleek Italian sports cars or imposing British behemoths or our American muscle cars
One Eleven Vintage Cars has also helped shaped the lauded lineage of vintage and classic cars in Palm Springs
Owner Bob Arzano raced Corvettes back in the ’60s and fell in love with the brand
He moved to Palm Springs in 1977 and opened One Eleven Vintage Cars
from buying and selling cars for Frank Sinatra to unearthing the “Piranha” in Palm Desert
it was a one-off custom car built for the Man from Uncle TV series
Arzano notes that older 12-cylinder front-engine Ferraris and Lamborghinis have accelerated in value

In particular, the Mercedes 280 SE convertibles have been taking the checkered flag for best vintage investment. They sold for $80,000 several years ago but now sell for $300,000. 335 E. Sunny Dunes Road, Palm Springs. 760-323-1161; oneelevencars.com
Palm Springs boys' basketball coach Chris Howard has been confident that a difficult preseason road schedule would pay big dividends this year
and he might have gotten his money back and then some Tuesday night.
The Indians went on the road to Fullerton and didn't get rattled when the hosts from Sunny Hills took a lead early in the fourth quarter
the Indians made the winning plays down the stretch and collected a 47-44 Division 3A playoff victory.
The win moves the Indians into the quarterfinals and moves their record to 24-5 -- the most wins in a decade.
A big 3-pointer by big man Parker Hunt gave the Indians a 3-point lead with two minutes left
the Indians took the shot clock down to one second before Isaiah Goad put up a floater
but Goad alertly followed it up and laid it in to put the Indians up by three with nine seconds left.

The Indians had a foul to give which they committed with six seconds left. After that Sunny Hills got off a 3-pointer, but it missed and the Indians were off to their first quarterfinals since 2016.
Palm Springs, the No. 5 seed and last desert boys' basketball team standing, will host the No. 4 seed Shalhevet out of Los Angeles. The game will be Thursday at 7 p.m. Interestingly, all eight top seeds in Division 3A made the quarterfinals.
Quartz Hill 62, Shadow Hills 51: The Knights couldn't duplicate their overwhelming opening-round performance on the road Tuesday night, falling to Quartz Hill 62-51.
The Knights finish the season with a 20-9 record and grabbed a share of second-place in the Desert Empire League in their first year under new coach Ryan Towner. The opening-round win was the team's first playoff win in five years. Leading scorers Dominic Escobar and Deonta Strange will be back next year, so expect the Knights to be a league-title contender in 2020.
Boys' soccerDesert Hot Springs 3, Hesperia 0: The Golden Eagles are showing no signs of slowing down as they breezed into the Division 5 semifinals with a convincing win over Hesperia. Oh by the way, Hesperia was the No. 1 seed in the Division.
Ezequiel Minero scored a goal and Felix Tejada added a pair of goals, including a beautiful bending free kick. Goalkeeper Johnny Gutierrez had the clean sheet, keeping Hesperia off the scoreboard.
The win puts the Golden Eagles in the semifinals Saturday. They will be on the road again, this time against the winner of Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista.

Desert Christian Academy baseball 9, Twentynine Palms 0: Austin Klopfenstein threw a no-hitter, striking out 13 batters. Troy Collins led the offense with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.
Shadow Hills 10 tennis, Coachella Valley 8: The Knights pulled out the non-league win despite yielding three points to the Arabs by not being able to field a third singles player. In the loss for the Arabs, it was Luis Lombera picking up the lone singles win. The Arabs' top doubles team of Jose Garcia and Gilbert German picked up a pair of wins, while the doubles teams of Rene Jara and David Bacilio, and Anthony Franco and Anthony Diaz each grabbed one win.

A MOBSTER was saved by cops in the nick of time as the mafia were digging him a grave as punishment for “sleeping with don’s wife”
The mobster had been condemned to death by the Camorra’s Abbinante clan
for sleeping with the wife of a mafia boss who had been in prison for three years
According to reports from The Times
officers arrived at the scene to find the mob had already dug the man a shallow grave
Police arrested those who had ordered the hit, as well as those who were preparing to carry it out, sources told local news outlet Ansa.
The Camorra members had reportedly planned to lure their victim to the countryside between Marano and Arzano, near Naples, on the pretext of “working something out”, police said.
Upon his arrival, he would have been shot dead and buried in the pre-prepared grave.
Alfredo Fabbrocini, of the Naples flying squad - the police team behind the man’s rescue, said: “The wives of mafia prisoners must be considered angels and never touched.
“That’s the rule and if you break it the punishment is death,” Fabbrocini said.
Police reportedly got wind of the killer plan by listening to wiretaps.
“That’s the rule and if you break it the punishment is death."
However, officers at first could not understand who the target was.
“We realised it was not a rival of the clan but someone inside the clan and then we understood who and why,” Fabbrocini said.
Acting with urgency, with fears the murder was about to happen, police tailed members to a rural spot on the edge of Naples.
Fabbrocini said officers installed hidden cameras and watched when the men returned to dig a grave and decide on the excuse they were going to use to lure their victim in.
“We realised the murder was planned for that day and moved in,” he said.
Police arrested the would-be murderers and then told the target — who has not been named — that he had escaped death.
“He pretended to be surprised but I believe he knew what had been planned for him,” Fabbrocini said.
The murder of men for sleeping with jailed bosses wives is not uncommon in Naples.
Vincenzo Amendola, 18, was killed in 2016 after boasting of having one such affair.
The teen was allegedly shot in the head by the woman's son.
And last year, the lover of Rita Mango - the wife of a jailed mafia boss, was allegedly murdered by Mango himself when he left her.
“The fear is that if prisoners feel they are not supported and that their wives are straying
they will start giving evidence to the police.”

a dozen inmates and a handful of guards are left to manage as best they can whilst waiting for transfer to a new facility
A crumbling old prison is being decommissioned and all the inmates moved into a new facility
a dozen inmates are still waiting to be rehoused
the kitchen and other facilities are closed
and other than deliveries of catered meals
The men are reassured that this will just be for a few days
until spaces are found for them in another prison
This disruption of physical infrastructure leads inexorably to a disruption of social structure
and lines between inmate and guard start to blur
director Leonardo Di Costanzo has joined forces with writers Bruno Oliviero and Valia Santella to produce a screenplay that reads like a stage play
There is not a word or phrase that does not deliver
and these all work together to inform the meta-narrative
Here is a story which could easily drop into cheap sentimentality
and yet still deliver a depth of emotional satisfaction found in only a small percentage of films
The actors have made the most of the gift of this screenplay
with performances that are so realistic as to be almost documentary-like
Playing the Mob boss Carmine is veteran actor Silvio Orlando (The Young Pope; The New Pope)
When the inmates start to rebel against the awful catered meals
Carmine offers to go into the prison kitchen and cook for them all
Guard Gaetano (Toni Servillo) goes with him
Servillo and Orlando create a magic on screen: their scenes are worth the price of admission on their own
Also giving an incredible performance is Nicola Sechi as Arzano
he needs to be protected from the rest of the inmates
But he is starting to show obvious signs of dementia
Young actor Pietro Giuliano shines in his first feature role as Fantaccini
Di Constanzo directs with total trust in his actors
allowing quotidian details to gradually build
Luca Bigazzi’s cinematography lets the natural darkness of 19th century prisons fill the screen and work alongside the almost perfect art direction
It has garnered prizes at this year’s
David di Donatello Awards and Nastri d’Argento Awards
and is sure to collect more before its run is up
ALi Italian Film Festival from 21st September to 16th October at Palace Nova Eastend and Prospect
