yet often complicated journey into parenthood
Avellino explores how to be vulnerable with your children
How much do we reveal about ourselves to our children
Many of us wish we knew more about those who came before us—yet don't practice sharing our stories with our own children
Maybe it's in part because we don't know how
Or maybe it's because we don't feel deserving of that type of space
One of the values that I hope to pass down to my children is curiosity
I want them to ask questions about themselves and be genuinely interested in others
It is easy for me to teach this by inquiring about their lives and allowing them to witness me ask about others
what I realized is how easy it is not to share about myself
but I was revealing so little about my own
Some of my therapy clients experience this too—their children don't truly know them outside of their role as parents
If we show them that we are willing to share
The problem is that many caregivers look at their role as providing a service—chauffeur
mothers in particular are often expected to hold a lot of space but not take it
We may not even consider interjecting about ourselves when the dinner conversation is focused on our children; we may not even be connected to that part of ourselves that has a story to tell
"I always told you to get your needs met," and the daughter responded
If we want our children to be curious about themselves
we have to show that we are curious about ourselves
Revealing ourselves teaches them that it is their right to show themselves to the world.
I want them to be able to say they knew me beyond composure and kindness
There is so much more I want to know about my own mother
in this column—one question I want to ponder with you is how do we reveal about ourselves
in developmentally appropriate ways that don't make our children feel pressure to take care of us but also let them truly see and know us?
When was the last time you thought about what the story you tell yourself about who you are is
Consider the story you want them to tell about you—start by asking yourself these questions:
It can also be helpful to recall what you remember about being their specific age
It's never too early to begin to share what's true for you.
It can be easy to want to paint ourselves as a hero who does the right thing
They want to relate to us and know we won't judge them if they share their hard truths.
Many parents want their kids to tell them the truth
but their kids don't feel like their parents can tolerate knowing it
This is a way to signal to your children that your shit stinks too
and we are all trying to figure ourselves out
The idea that learning is endless helps our kids feel safer about not "getting it right."
Learning about my grandparents and great-grandparents helps me come home to myself
Whenever I feel lost or pulled to behave in ways that don't align with who I want to be
I think about my grandparents: living in a cliff town in Italy
I think about the boldness of my grandmother in coming to the United States through Ellis Island or my grandpa's first job selling peanuts at baseball games
Knowing their journeys helps me find my way
Consider the things you wish you knew about those who came before you
Consider revealing those exact things to your own children.
The most powerful narratives that I connect with are the ones that reveal how the narrator felt
attach the emotion you experienced while doing it or experiencing it
This allows the connection between you and your child to deepen—they begin to develop an understanding of not only how you live your life but your inner world as well
This gives them permission to reveal their vulnerable inner workings to you and others.
Remember that the goal of sharing isn't to reveal every single detail but to reveal the heart of your story
What is the nugget of truth you want to pass down
If you ever worry that you are sharing too much
check in with your kids about how they feel knowing tidbits about you
what it's like to see a more complete picture of you
observe their reactions: Does it bring you closer to one another or further apart?
Storytelling—an art form that is a part of every culture and every period in history—is an interactive experience between speaker and listener
You will learn what your children gravitate to most about who you are and what parts they want to know more about
My kids love to hear most about my silly experiences
we are not only building a stronger relationship
but we are developing a new story together.
they are practicing the art of listening and inquiring

I was a student at Northeastern University
Northeastern has a lot of unique qualities that did not quite work for me
which is why I write for The Daily Targum and not The Huntington News
but I respect that it is a good fit for many students not named Noble Avellino
It also had a severe housing shortage. During my year at Northeastern, the school accepted more students than it thought would enroll, a record-breaking 4,504 students
It definitely felt silly to say that a chunk of your students are lodged in the Sheraton or that you were studying abroad in Massachusetts. On top of this, discovering you have two more people to potentially cause you grief and trouble instead of just one is a justifiable anxiety
But I also think about the 4,504th student, the one who just squeezed in at the end of the acceptance list and was able to live and study in Northeastern because the school made that "mistake." Maybe they really wanted to benefit from the school's co-op program. Maybe they really love losing to Rutgers
I cannot possibly understand every student's situation
The Rutgers community was murmuring about similar issues at the beginning of the semester
Though exact apples-to-apples comparisons for the Class of 2028 enrollment are difficult because Rutgers only lists combined enrollment for Rutgers—New Brunswick and Rutgers Health
The Rutgers Class of 2025
had 7,283 enrollees for the New Brunswick campus
The Rutgers Class of 2027
Combined enrollment for the Rutgers Class of 2028 in New Brunswick and Rutgers Health topped 10,000
We also know that Rutgers hit 99 percent capacity earlier in the semester and had to convert residence hall lounges into living spaces
Students I have spoken to are uncomfortable with the idea that the buses will get a little more packed
classes a little tighter and the housing a little less comfortable
I want to reach higher than saying it is bad to complain about over-enrollment
I do not yet think Rutgers is reaching enough students
and we should constantly ask ourselves how big we can feasibly be
Universities are places where we go to study, get a degree and make more money than we otherwise would. More so than other types of schools, large public colleges drive this kind of economic mobility
The Wall Street Journal's Social Mobility Index
a similar ranking identifying how schools help their poorest students
finds similar results: of the top 20 schools for social mobility
The U.S. News and World Report has a more narrow metric that only looks at statistics related to Pell Grant recipients
But do you want to guess what type of schools dominate that list for which schools are actually lifting up people's incomes
It should not surprise anyone that schools like Rutgers drive economic mobility in the U.S
They receive lots of funding from state and local governments
and because they are not definitionally elitist institutions like the Ivy Leagues
It makes our national obsession with the admissions process for a handful of schools seem stalkerish. As of 2023, the U.S. had north of 20 million undergraduates, only a tiny fraction of whom are at schools like Yale, Princeton or Harvard. We should be focused on increasing university accessibility, which means paying attention to schools like Rutgers.
Can we accept every student? No. It is sad but true that there is only so much space. But that should not be a catalyst for getting upset at the number of students here. It should not even be a reason to tell Rutgers that they are accepting too many people.
I want us to discuss ways to constantly grow and allow more people into our school. I want a dynamic debate about whether we need this parking lot space and what additional residence halls could look like. Maybe, just maybe, a couple more doubles from singles might be worth it to give more kids a chance at a world-class education.
Complaining about overcrowding and too many people is small potatoes. We should think big.

you would know I was not thrilled about Tuesday's elections
It was a pretty bad night to be a Democrat. President-elect Donald J. Trump swept all seven swing states
heavily targeted by both campaigns as must-wins
Atlantic and Cumberland also flipped to the Republicans
There are going to be lots of takeaways from these results and what they mean for our towns
One thing that we should focus on is the gender gap in this election
And it should get much more attention than it is now
men are a voting bloc like they have not been in a while
and the "good" data on voting demographics will not be out for months
I expect the gender gap between male and female voters to be similar
I also expect the male vote to still be roughly split 55-45 or 60-40 in favor of Republicans
That is not what I would call a unified voting bloc
What I do mean is that there is now a concerted effort by both parties to go after men as a group of voters in a way I have not seen in my lifetime
On the Republican side, Trump's team was certain they needed men to win. Republican strategists would say that men less than 40 had the softest views on Trump and could most easily be swayed to their camp
There was sexism, of course. Trump attacked and accused Harris of using relationships to attain political power early in her career and mouthed a derogatory term for women to describe Harris during one of his last rallies
To the extent that male voters approved of this misogyny
Both campaigns also sought to define masculinity in the race to 270 electoral votes. Surrogates like former President Barack Obama made outreach to Black men, at some points scolding them for considering voting Republican: "You're thinking about sitting out or supporting somebody who has a history of denigrating you
because you think that's a sign of strength
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk made similar comments about the relationship between one's masculinity and one's voting patternon social media: "If you are a man in this country and you don't vote for Donald Trump
you're not a man." As a liberal man who would sooner vote for asbestos over Trump
I am used to this kind of anecdotal language
But I would never expect it from organized campaigns
which is truly remarkable about this presidential campaign regarding gender dynamics
suggest that men voted for Trump over Harris
Men of all ages tend to be more conservative for many reasons
This is what I mean when I say men are a voting bloc: we face common issues in ways unique to other groups and seem more willing to vote based on how the parties reach out to us in both substance and style. And right now, as Tuesday showed, the Republican party is winning the war for men.

Archaeologists in Italy’s Salerno province have uncovered a series of ancient human and animal footprints
which tell a disturbing tale of a dramatic escape by men and animals from a huge eruption thousands of years before the sensational devastation of Pompeii in CE 79
The discovery occurred near the Casarzano stream in Nocera Inferiore during excavation work for a gas pipeline
according to the Superintendency of Archaeology
and Landscape for the Provinces of Salerno and Avellino
preserved in pyroclastic deposits from the Avellino eruption of Mount Vesuvius
this eruption was much larger and more explosive than the deadly eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum and buried settlements under meter-deep layers of ash and pumice
some of whom were barefoot while others wore basic footwear
trace the desperate flight of the region’s inhabitants as they attempted to escape the catastrophe
the excavations have revealed a wealth of archaeological remains across several historical periods
A partially uncovered extra-urban sanctuary
was found near Nuceria Alfaterna along an ancient road
provide insight into religious practices during that period
The Roman period also left its mark on this place
Archaeologists have identified two large rural villas
probably dedicated to agricultural production
Plow marks found in and around the site indicate that it was the site of intense farming activity
researchers uncovered burials dated to the transition between the Roman era and Late Antiquity
A monumental tomb with a sarcophagus may have belonged to a high-ranking individual
an underground structure may have functioned as a martyrium
further evidencing the coexistence of Christian and pagan burial practices
Remaining evidence from Late Antiquity indicates that there was continued habitation
with large huts resembling prehistoric dwellings
This change has been attributed by experts to socio-economic shifts
suggesting the flexibility and adaptation of these communities to historical changes
The discovery of these footprints and archaeological remains offers a rare and deeply human perspective on how ancient communities responded to catastrophic natural events

OCEAN CITY — When little girls approach her, in awe of her crown and sash, Junior Miss Ocean City Sarah Avellino knows that feeling well.
“I used to be one of those girls and now I get to be in the big girl shoes,” she said last week, reflecting on the past year as one of Ocean City’s crown sisters. On Saturday night, Aug. 17, she will crown her successor at the 2025 Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant at the Music Pier.
“I wanted to do pageants and be one of these Ocean City queens since I was a little girl. Seeing where these little girls are, it just reminds me of when I was little and I just hope the best for them. It’s just a really great experience to meet all of them.”
Sarah, 15, a rising sophomore at Villa Maria Academy High School in Malvern, Pa., was first exposed to pageants in her kitchen as she and her mom talked about camps for the summer. Her mom spotted Little Miss Ocean City.
Sarah didn’t know what it was, but after reading about it, something clicked.
“Oh yeah, I’m definitely doing that. That’s the thing for me,” she said. “Basically since I was 8 was when I got introduced to it and wanted to do it. I even convinced some of my friends to do it with me. It’s been a great experience.”
She competed in the Little Miss pageant, for girls age 8 to 11, for three years. In her first try at Junior Miss last August, which is for girls 12 to 15, she won.
Looking at the self-confident teen from Newtown Square, Pa., who summers with her family in Ocean City, makes her seem like a natural for the stage. It wasn’t always that way.
“I think I get a lot of my confidence from the support of my family. I used to be a really shy little girl and I didn’t want to do pageants or theater because I worried what people would think of me, but my brother, my sister, my mom and dad, they all told me I could do it and just to be myself,” she said.
“Once that finally got in my head and I started doing it, I realized I don’t need anyone’s approval but myself and my family. And they really boosted my confidence and made me the girl I am today.”
Sarah said girls should try this “really unbelievable and incredible experience.”
“When they called my name (at last year’s pageant), I was in complete shock. I couldn’t even get words out. I was so proud I got up on that stage whether I won or not. It’s been such a great experience that I would love to do it again, maybe for Miss Ocean City. It is something I’m really proud of and I’m going to tell this story a lot of times in my life.”
When convincing a friend to go out for the pageant, she talked about the memories and friendships. She keeps in touch with girls she met in Little Miss.
“Just putting yourself out there is a really great experience and there are great friendships that you make.”
Sarah is going to value two friendships in particular, what she considers the best part of being Junior Miss Ocean City.
“The thing I enjoyed the most was getting to know Lola and Stella. Lola is like my big sister and Stella is like a little sister to me,” she said about Miss Ocean City 2024 Lola DeMarco and Little Miss Ocean City 2024 Stella Fleming. “We’ve grown so close, even at our first event. Getting to know them and the great people that they are really made this year amazing and I don’t think without them it would be the same.”
Sarah enjoyed many aspects of her year as Junior Miss, going to all the events, taking part in parades and meeting all the parents and kids who approached her to say hello and get photos.
“My favorite was Night in Venice. We had so much fun on the boat and seeing all the houses and decorations. I almost fell off the boat we were dancing so much,” she said, laughing. “It was a really great time and just getting to be with them made it so much sweeter.”
In high school, Sarah spends a lot of time singing in the church choir, the regular choir, she does theater at her school and in Ocean City during the summer. She’s also on the cheer team and would like to be an ambassador at her school as well.
Sarah appreciates the support she has received from her family, whether it’s at parades or events such as Wacky Wednesday.
“They’re always there,” she said of her mother and father, “to get pictures or cheer me on. It’s been really great. I’m just very grateful for them and all they’ve done for me this year.
“They drove me down to every event, even if it was the wintertime and we had to drive from Pennsylvania to New Jersey, even it is was just an hour-long event, they made me get there on time.”
Sarah said crowning her successor will be bittersweet but she is excited to see who wears the crown next.
“This is such a great opportunity. And I just can’t wait for her to experience this because it is something I am so grateful for, but at the same time it’s sad because this has been the best thing I’ve ever done, so giving that up is a little tough.”
She will have company in the latter regard as her pageant sisters give up their crowns as well.
“Me and Lola and Stella are always going to stay in touch. We have talked about that. We’re going to text and FaceTime all the time.”
The Little Miss Ocean City Pageant is Friday, Aug. 16, and the Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant is Saturday, Aug. 17. Both begin at 7 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. (Miss Ocean City was last week.) Not every celebrity can perfectly navigate the tricky world of politics. There is a balancing act every celebrity has to perform between wanting to keep as many fans as happy as possible, and wanting to say what is on their mind. It is a complicated game and rarely do even the most media-savvy celebrities get it right
The Guardian interviewed the Midwest Princess on a wide range of topics
the interview turned to Roan's politics
and she was asked about endorsing a presidential candidate:
"I have so many issues with our government in every way," she says
"There are so many things that I would want to change
So I don't feel pressured to endorse someone
There's problems on both sides…" The change she wants to see in the U.S
They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people
is it not strange to be "both sides-ing" this issue
After a few days, Roan posted a follow-up video to her TikTok
Roan stated definitively that she would not be voting for Trump and would be "(questioning) those in power and those making decisions over other people."
This was after a lot of vague sentiments about "actions speak(ing) louder than words," without telling us what her actions will be come November
and claims that she "want(s) to be part of the generation that changes things for good," without telling us what those changes should be
I was not the only one left unsatisfied with her vague conjectures and half-declarations of principles. The next day, she posted a second video
"If someone is publicly endorsing a political figure
that doesn't even mean they're gonna f*cking vote for them." That is exactly what that means
"I'm not gonna settle for what the options (are) in front of me … So yeah
I'm voting for f*cking Kamala." That is settling for the options in front of you
"I'm not picking sides of what we have right now … Yes
one's obviously better than the other." That is picking a side
Chappell Roan is like a lot of young, nominally left-wing voters. Her politics certainly seem progressive: pro-trans rights, pro-Palestine
But she also has a vague understanding that things are going wrong in this country and does not know who is responsible for it
This leads her to make bizarre claims about the "Left's transphobic views." Huh
Roan is 26 years old. She is not some kid who does not know any better. She used to live in Missouri, a state controlled by Republicans that is among the worst in the country. She also lived as an adult under four years of former President Donald J. Trump, who was an unmitigated disaster on her number one issue
She should know exactly what Republican rule means for trans rights or abortion
Roan could research and find out which politicians are the ones "making decisions over other people" like she insists she does
but that might lead her to some lame conclusions like "The Democratic Party is better than the Republican Party." So she will not
I have heard this kind of "do your own research" rhetoric from people before
It usually comes from two camps: unabashed conservatives and fence-sitters
it is usually an excuse to peddle conspiracy theories
But I do not think Chappell Roan is a conservative
I do think that Roan has a Republican State Representative uncle whom she does not want to unduly attack by going too hard on Republicans
I also think that Roan enjoys the feelings of moral superiority that come with attacking all sides
And I think that Roan enjoys the comfortability of not having to really learn about politics and make definitive statements about where she stands
If she had simply said "I do not feel comfortable influencing my fans' politics so I will not endorse a candidate
thank you," I do not think Roan would have gotten nearly as much backlash as she did
but I think that is an appropriate path to take
She wants to feel confident in her left-wing views about marginalized communities
a woman's right to choose and Palestinians' right to peace
And she wants to feel smart and morally superior in her anti-establishment views that all sides are equally bad
But she cannot have both and neither can you

What I can tell you is that I am going to miss President Joseph R
Biden has had a rough few years, suffering permanently low approval ratings since the U.S.'s withdrawal from Afghanistan, something every president since George W
Part of this is inflation. Voters despise inflation, probably more so than unemployment, and the economy was consistently one of Biden's worst issues. Even when people's real incomes rose
And part of it is college students like us. Biden has had chronic ailments with young people, even before the highly salient Oct

Even before campus protests and controversy over the U.S.'s support for Israel
In an era where young people tell politicians they must "earn my vote," no one has worked harder to do it than Biden
After a year of Americans pleading for more financial relief from the COVID-19 pandemic, Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law

closing some loopholes that allow domestic abusers to buy guns and increasing funding for mental health
Six months after the Supreme Court overturned "Roe v. Wade" and Justice Clarence Thomas suggested the Court should reexamine "Obergefell v. Hodges," the landmark case legalizing same-sex marriage, Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law
Against the opposition of most Republicans
Biden made it mandatory for all states to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages
If it seems like I am boringly listing off Biden's accomplishments, well, I am. There are a lot. We have not seen such a productive president for progressive policy since former President Lyndon B. Johnson
And no other president has successfully packaged so many high-priority progressive victories together in one big bill: the Inflation Reduction Act
the highly-publicized bills people supposedly pay attention to
A president is not just responsible for signing bills into law
They also staff important agencies that have serious impacts on our lives
Or the National Labor Relations Board that has been acting in a much more pro-labor style than its predecessors and from which Biden removed some of Trump's appointees
Or the Environmental Protection Agency, which issued a landmark rule on "forever chemicals" polluting our water and making us poorer
In a million ways that I believe progressives never fully appreciated
Biden has been the greatest president of our lifetime
The greatest mistake of his presidency was assuming the results would speak for themselves
I can only pray that Trump is not given the chance to reverse Biden's progressive vision that we are not likely to see for decades to come
a bus fell from the overpass of the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway
The six-year prison sentence for the former CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia (Aspi) is definitive
when a bus fell from the overpass of the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway
This is what the fourth criminal section of the Court of Cassation decided
rejecting the appeals presented by the defense and confirming the six-year sentence
The Court of Cassation rejected the "appeals of the civilly responsible party and of all the defendants
subjects guaranteeing the safety of the vehicle and of the motorway section involved in the accident"

The truth about the alleged coincidence between US Avellino's promotions and papal deaths: a curious but perhaps overrated statistic in Italian soccer
View this post on Instagram The truth behind the myth Despite the apparent pattern that has captivated fans and journalists
the data show a decidedly more nuanced and less extraordinary reality
Avellino has achieved as many as 15 promotions in the various Italian leagues
while there have been only 6 deceased popes in the same period (plus one pope emeritus
This simple numerical comparison already shows how the correlation is much weaker than the popular narrative suggests
only on two or three occasions was promotion followed or preceded shortly after the death of a pontiff
However, many other promotions mentioned in the legend occurred months after or before the respective papal events, as in the case of Pius XII (who died in October 1958, with promotion not occurring until June 1959), or Benedict XVI (who resigned in February 2013, while Avellino did not gain promotion until May 5, more than two months later).
This phenomenon shows how in Italian soccer, a sport lived with almost religious passion, curious statistics and coincidences can take on almost mythological dimensions, regardless of their actual statistical consistency.
Despite the fact that the numbers tell a less extraordinary reality than one would like to believe, this legend continues to fascinate and be passed on. After all, in a country where soccer and faith represent two fundamental pillars of popular culture, could there ever be a more fascinating coincidence than that which links the fate of a provincial team to the highest echelons of the Catholic Church?

including one Cavallero continuously growing and a No
no in clear regression: there are many players he could count on coach Marco Cardani in the playoff challenge lost byUrania Milan at the Palalido for 76-85 against a well organized one Avellino
With Alexander Gentile destined to watch his teammates from the sidelines for a good few more weeks due to a distracting lesion of the collateral ligament of his knee
and with Cesana who tried to throw himself back into the fray but had to come out again
to the coach of the Wildcats there was nothing left to do but try some minimal variations on the theme in the different quintets
with minutes in the zone also to manage the foul situation and with the idea of marking Cavallero su Mussini which proved to be effective for long stretches (9 points in the first three quarters for the top scorer from Irpinia
before scoring the same number in the final period and closing at 18 also thanks to the free throws for systematic fouls at the end)
6 assists) and Potts (16) and with the awakening after the interval – and after a verbal confrontation with Cardani during a timeout – of a Udanoh with 15 points and 10 rebounds
for three quartersUrania Milan still managed to hold out (57-60 at the third siren) before inevitably running out of oxygen and therefore lucidity on both sides of the court
While the longest Avellino he added to Mussini's points those of a constant Lewis (17 in 37'
including the triple leg-cutting shot for 70-77) and a Bortolin dominant in the colored (16 + 11 rebounds)
In double double for the "wolves" also Jurkatamm (15
14 of which in the first two fractions) and Sabatino (11)
in our opinion decisive in directing the match in favour of his team after coming off the bench and destined to have more and more minutes in the starting five with his full recovery from injury (“in the plans at the beginning of the season he was a pillar of the team and he remains so”
he tells us Coach Crotti at the end of the game)
he remains struggling with injuries and ailments (even Potts and Udanoh are not at their best)Urania Milan
who at the moment can only thank the call of No
no of Cameroon national team why is the away match in Bologna against Bologna being postponed to March 19th
Fortitude (scheduled for February 23rd) and the other big match against Udine (scheduled for February 20)
Next engagement for the Wildcats it will then be the one on February 26th on the parquet of the Juvi Cremona
before hosting Verona at the Allianz Cloud on March 1st: ten days of respite that will bring some improvements in the infirmary
but which presumably will not end the emergency
Here then is the fateful question: do we need a rinforzo to Urania Milano
The Milanese club that arrived in A2 starting from the oratory has always been characterized by a prudent (and as such appreciable) financial management
but with 11 games to play between now and April 27th an economic effort could be almost necessary to avoid the risk of exiting the Playoff fight
And thus nullify the effort made on the parquet in a season that has been more than positive so far

Perugia was defeated 3-1 in the match against Avellino and is left hanging by a thread. They will have to wait until the last matchday to achieve the goal of salvation. In fact, against Benevento, now without objectives, they will need a victory to not depend on the results of Bari and Crotone.

ShareSaveCommentLifestyleSpiritsLe Donne Del Fiano—Women Wine Producers Of Fiano Di AvellinoByTom Hyland
Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights
Tom Hyland writes about wine (and sometimes) food from Europe and US
There is an organization called Le Donne del Vino in Italy that is all about promoting Italian women in the wine business
most notably those who own a winery and/or are winemakers; the group also includes sommeliers
there are currently more than 1000 members
I recently tasted examples of Fiano di Avellino
from several women producers; I call this collection of wine personalities Le Donne del Fiano
Maura Sarno - Tenuta Sarno 1860 (Avellino) - Maura Sarno specializes in Fiano di Avellino
which offers layers of fruit along with very good acidity; her 2020 and 2018 riserve are excellent and display notes of lemon zest
green apple and a touch of honey - the varietal purity is first-rate - and offer the stuffing and structure to drink well for another seven to ten years
Her 2021 Fiano di Avellino 1860 is refined and quite subtle
whose wines are beautifully complex and well-structured
Ilaria Petitto - Donnachiara (Montefalcione) - If I had to name the finest promoter of Fiano di Avellino among the producers in this article
Petitto producers notable offerings of the classic Irpinian wines including Taurasi and Greco di Tufo
and is among the finest estate for Fiano di Avellino as well
Her classic Fiano di Avellino is a very pretty wine (like Ilaria herself) with perfumes of lemon oil
while her Empatia (”empathy”) bottling is richer on the palate and offers greater complexity and an extremely long finish
Petitto and her winemaker Riccardo Cotarella are among those finding exciting new ways to express this classic wine
Marianna Mazzariello - Tenuta Madre (Montefalcione) - Marianna Mazzariello and her husband Adriano - the winery’s name is derived from the letters of their first two names - produced their first Fiano di Avellino from the 2019 vintage
and immediately received excellent reviews
I recently tasted the newly released 2022 and thought it first-rate
the Tenuta Madra version is partially aged in oak casks
yet the oak is barely noticeable in the aromas or on the palate
and I believe Tenuta Madre will remain an important producer of Fiano di Avellino
Diamante Gaita Renna - Villa Diamante (Montefredane) - Diamante Gaita Renna has continued the outstanding work with Fiano di Avellino at this estate following the sudden passing of her husband Antoine Gaita in 2015
The initial offering was the single vineyard Vigna della Congregazione in 1996
a full-bodied wine with outstanding persistence
significant complexity and a beautiful sense of place
Fiano di Avellino Clos d’Haut was added a few years later; as you might imagine given the name
this is a Fiano more in the style of a white Burgundy; the minerality of this wine is so beautifully defined
Both wines remain on their lees for an extended period of time (eleven months)
which provides significant structure; neither wine spends any time in wood
named Fiano Congregazione (Campania Fiano IGP) has recently been added to the portfolio
Fiano vineyard below the town of Montefalcione
Clelia Romano - Colli di Lapio (Lapio) - If there is one person most associated with top notch Fiano di Avellino
it is Clelia Romano at Colli di Lapio in the village of Lapio
this is the home of what can be called the archetypical Fiano di Avellino; the style here combines lovely aromas of lemon peel
yellow flowers and tropical fruit (pineapple in warmer vintages)
along with excellent concentration and significant persistence
a beautifully balanced wine that should drink well for 6-10 years; the 2018
one with great typicity and distinct minerality
and impressive freshness; I would estimate this wine will drink well for at least another six to eight years
There are other first-rate producers of Fiano di Avellino
producers craft better Fiano do Avellino than Clelia Romano at Colli di Lapio
Daniela Mastroberardino - Terredora di Paolo (Montefusco) - Although this winery is not based primarily on Fiano di Avellino (indeed the cellars are located in the Greco di Tufo zone)
I wanted to make mention of the work performed by Daniela Mastroberardino as far as promotion of Fiano di Avellino and other Irpinian wines
There are two versions of Fiano di Avellino made here: “Ex Cinere Resurgo,” with grapes sourced from Lapio and Montefalcione
from a single vineyard in Lapio; the wine is barrel fermented
Mastroberardino is a famous name in Irpinia; Daniela currently serves as chairwoman of Le Donne del Vino
Milena Pepe - Tenuta Cavalier Pepe (Luogosano) - While Fiano di Avellino is only one of several Irpinian wines produced here
I wanted to credit Milena Pepe for her work as an ambassador for Fiano di Avellino and other local wines
she is one of the great personalities of Irpinia
The Fiano di Avellino “Refiano” is one of the more charming versions of this wine: freshness and varietal purity are its trademarks
Laura De Vito (Lapio) - Laura de Vito decided to stop selling her family’s grapes a few years ago
and embarked on a career of a producer; her only wine is Fiano di Avellino
with the initial production from the 2018 vintage
There are four different versions: three single vineyards
Interestingly her vineyards are in the same Saurini sub-zone as those of Colli di Lapio; this fact explains the foundation for the notable quality of the wines
Lending additional excellence to this undertaking
the region’s best-known and most successful consulting winemaker
it was the idea of Mercurio to produce three single vineyard offerings of Fiano di Avellino from the estate
This is certainly the most unique Fiano di Avellino project
and in only three years (the current releases at this writing are from the 2020 vintage)
the wines of Laura De Vito have become recognized as among the most sylistic
The three single vineyard wines are: Li Saurini
the district where the vineyards are located) and Verzare
There are subtle differences between the wines; for the 2020 vintage of these wines
the Li Saurini has notes of almond and lemon peel
the Araniè offers hints of hazelnut and golden apples
while the Verzare displays pear and almond qualities
Each wine has excellent varietal character
as well as a refined quality that one finds only in the finest wines; these are highly distinct as well as being sleek and understated
As with the best examples of Fiano di Avellino
Each of these 2020 wines will drink well for at least another five to seven years
with the Araniè rewarding the patient Fiano lover with anywhere from a decade to fifteen years of great pleasure.
