Avetrana - This is not Hollywood is speculatively experiencing the same treatment that the murder of Sarah Scazzi received at the time
the guilty parties were members of the Misseri family

Everyone felt entitled to share their opinion
after the news of the release of the four-part miniseries
people rushed to express outrage and mock its (admittedly ugly) poster and newly released trailer
The question then and now remains: how could anyone think of revisiting one of the darkest crime stories in Italian history and turning it into material to be sold to the highest bidder
The pain and shock caused by the events in the small Apulian town fourteen years ago are evidently still fresh in the minds and hearts of those who followed the case closely - albeit from the comfort of their homes
They were able to do so precisely because of that subtitle
which was written as a reminder on one of the walls in Avetrana
given the pilgrimages to the crime scenes and the constant presence of television broadcasters seeking scoops in the area
which presents four points of view over four episodes (Sarah
focuses on the intention to tell the story of the media circus that engulfed the town
and the citizens in a black hole of news reports and interviews about Sarah's tragic disappearance
Let’s not forget that her body was discovered live during the show Chi l’ha visto?
Such a structure for the miniseries could have helped us better understand how the spotlight can change and influence people
whether they thrive in its glow or merely in its reflection
wasting the opportunity to avoid sensationalizing the obsessive and fanatical fervor that true crime ignites
Because even in criticizing Avetrana - This is not Hollywood
there is a certain hypocrisy that pretends not to feel a curiosity for the genre
which has now become one of the most popular forms of entertainment in podcasts
And just because it’s in English doesn't mean we can pretend it's something distant from us
We who have just finished the second season of Monsters on Netflix or

It certainly doesn't feel good to feel invaded
by a production that has brazenly stolen from our own home
if we think about Marco Tullio Giordana's 2021 film Yara or Marco Pontecorvo's Per Elisa - The Claps Case
but the romanticization of something so private that it can only be speculated upon
The series itself acknowledges this in its opening
The Girl from Avetrana by Carmine Gazzanni and Flavia Piccinni
but ultimately the reflection on the mania for cameras and how they influenced both the protagonists and the audience remains superficial
This also applies to the characterization of the characters
and the overall narrative of the miniseries
Perhaps it should have dared more at this point
possibly creating a staging that only loosely inspired itself on the case and aimed instead to create a true genre product
like the thriller it tries so hard to resemble
but ends up being nothing more than popular fare
And more attention should have been paid to the poster
as the comparison with Maccio Capatonda's Omicidio all’italiana was too obvious and predictably led to public mockery or raised eyebrows
to accuse the production of a lack of tact when true crime
It is also excessive to sue Disney and the series
requesting the immediate suspension of the show and a change of its title following an urgent appeal
which will cause a delay in the release date
officially confirmed today by the official Disney+ Italia accounts
Among the reasons cited is the fear that it «evokes a defamatory portrayal
or possibly engaged in the commission of heinous crimes
But there is respect for Sarah Scazzi's memory in the show
although the script falters repeatedly - problematic is the lack of depth in its attempt to explore Sabrina’s psychology
along with its misstep in the representation of non-conforming bodies
while pulling back when it came to the demonic return of media attention surrounding the crime
What feels most out of place is the constant invocation of death from the very beginning
a stylistic quirk both in writing and direction
which nevertheless does not distance Avetrana - This is not Hollywood from being a miniseries like many others
it perhaps reveals that the truly interesting part of these products is not their craftsmanship
but what they provoke in the masses and in ourselves

ROME 2024
by Vittoria Scarpa
24/10/2024 - Pippo Mezzapesa’s miniseries about the murder of Sarah Scazzi is an example of how a horrible true crime story can be told without morbidity and by delving into the psychology of the characters
Avetrana is also the place in which an unprecedented media circus takes places around this terrible news story
with TV channels positioned day and night in front of the house of horrors from which Sarah never came out alive
and with an army of journalists on the hunt for scoops and morbid details on every street of the village
the chilling announcement that the body of the little girl has been found is made
directly to her mother who at that moment was the guest of a well-known TV show about missing persons
This is also what the series is about: the macabre show that plays on air at all hours of the day and to which lends herself
Sarah’s murderous cousin Sabina Misseri (played by extraordinary newcomer Giulia Perulli
before the noose closes around her and her mother Cosima Misseri (the equally exceptional Vanessa Scalera
transformed and magnified by prosthetic makeup)
on taking all the responsibility for the crime upon himself
but continuously got confused and repeatedly retracted his version of the story
The four episodes of This Is Not Hollywood each present a different point of view on the story
We begin with the most difficult one to reconstruct
played with almost hypnotic grace by the young Federica Sala
her uncle Michele and her aunt Cosima follow
But it isn’t the same segment of the story that is revisited every time; instead
each episode continues the delivery of the facts through a different prism: Sarah’s radiance
pettiness and weaknesses emerges from which no one is saved
the show avoids representing the unrepresentable (the crime itself)
and the psychology of the characters is deep
the cast is amazing: also worth mentioning is Imma Villa playing Sarah’s mother
who is the object of contention between the two cousins
and Anna Ferzetti as the journalist Daniela; casting director Francesca Borromeo is to be thanked for this
This Is Not Hollywood was produced by Matteo Rovere for Groenlandia
planned for 25 October exclusively on Disney+ in Italy and Europe
since the Taranto court has accepted the urgent appeal presented by the Avetrana mayor
who in the last few days asked for “the rectification of the name” of the TV series and its “immediate suspension”
it appears “essential to view it in advance in order to ascertain whether the association of the name of the town with this cinematic adaptation has a defamatory effect”
The judge has set the date of 5 November for the hearing of the parties

SARAH Scazzi was only 15 when she disappeared from the small town of Avetrana
sparking a massive search effort for the missing teen
She was later found at the bottom of a well
strangled to death — the sickening story is featured in Disney+'s Avetrana: This is Not Hollywood
The tragic murder in 2010 shocked the nation
becoming the subject of intense media scrutiny
Sarah Scazzi disappeared in the small town of Avetrana
located in the Puglia region of southern Italy
Her disappearance initially sparked a widespread search and numerous televised appeals for her discovery
including emotional pleas from her own family members
The investigation took a dramatic turn when Sarah's uncle
The confession was later retracted, with Misseri then accusing his own daughter of the crime.
Eventually, the grim reality of Sarah's fate was revealed.
The young girl had been strangled and her body was disposed of down a well.
the Italian Supreme Court (Cassation Court) delivered its final verdict
Sarah's aunt Cosima Serrano and her cousin Sabrina Misseri were both sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder
Michele Misseri was given an eight-year sentence for concealing the body
The case of Sarah Scazzi continued to receive a great deal of public attention long after the verdicts were handed down
Michele Misseri has persistently claimed sole responsibility for the murder
After serving his sentence for body concealment
upon his release from prison in February 2024 he told the press: "It was me
I have been confessed a thousand and a thousand times
"I wrote many letters to Sabrina and Cosima asking for forgiveness
"I would like to go and visit them in prison
"I want to ask them for forgiveness by looking them in the eyes
nor did my brother Carmine and my nephew Cosimo
"I didn't want to go out because it's not right
The horrific case raised questions about the ethics of true crime reporting in Italy
Sarah's mother Concetta Serrano learned that her daughter had been murdered live on television
She was also told that her brother-in-law Michele Misseri had confessed to the crime
There were 3.5million viewers watching the traumatic moment on Chi l'ha visto — a programme on the state-run RAI network that investigates disappearances
The case has been adapted into a controversial television series titled Aventrana: Qui non è Hollywood
which roughly translates as 'Aventrana: This is Not Hollywood'
The show faced legal challenges from Avetrana
resulting in the removal of the town's name from the title in the country
Avetrana Mayor Antonio Iazzi said: "Avetrana cannot and must not be identified with the terrible murder."
The series reportedly dropped on Disney+ in various territories on October 25
and in Italy on October 30 with the name of the town where the crime took place omitted from the title
A controversial television show on the 2010 murder of 15-year-old Sarah Scazzi aired on Wednesday in Italy
It is available on the platform Disney+ with a revised title excluding the name of the town where the homicide ..

Thousands of people bid farewell at an open-air funeral Saturday to a 15-year-old schoolgirl whose killing — announced to her mother on live TV — has shocked this nation
26 as she walked a short distance in the town of Avetrana
This week police pulled the body of a girl resembling Scazzi out of a cistern in the countryside just outside the town
The girl’s mother was a guest on a live TV show Wednesday night when she was told that her missing daughter was probably dead — and that her brother-in-law was the alleged killer
for several minutes as the TV show host read news reports that were coming in about the her daughter’s fate
Serrano was appearing on the show from the house of her brother-in-law
He was at that moment being questioned by police
Investigators said later that he confessed to killing Sarah
Some 3.5 million people watched the broadcast on state TV RAI
Many later criticized the host for not cutting the broadcast short
told the mother she could choose to interrupt the live broadcast at any time
Sciarelli asked the mother if she understood what was happening
“I am trying to understand,” Serrano replied
said Thursday that Misseri had confessed that he had killed Sarah shortly after she disappeared
News reports said Misseri confessed to strangling the girl after she refused his sexual advances
and news reports have said he is being kept in isolation because other inmates have threatened his life
A banner in Avetrana called for the death sentence
Italy does not have capital punishment; the most severe penalty is life imprisonment
The funeral Saturday was held in the Avetrana soccer stadium
Thousands of people came from nearby towns to file past Sarah’s coffin
Many applauded as it was being carried inside the stadium
The case has led to discussions of the role of TV
and some commentators have denounced what they said was lack of ethics on television
One lawmaker called it a “horrible reality show.”
On the anniversary of Meredith Kercher’s murder
whose body was found three years ago today
a new mystery is stealing the spotlight in Italy
And much like Kercher’s killing; the murder of Sarah Scazzi has turned into a controversial spectacle not least of all because the prime suspect in Scazzi’s murder is also a young woman
The lurid details of this latest high-profile crime either point to a disturbing trend in 20-something female killers in Italy
or underscore accusations of total Italian police ineptitude
when she was supposed to join her cousin Sabrina Misseri and a mutual friend for a day at the beach
When Sarah didn’t show up at her cousin’s house
her family filed a missing person’s report
which kicked off a media campaign to find the young girl
perhaps to Milan where her father was living
but investigators close to the case presumed from the beginning that they were investigating a homicide
His demeanor won him the nickname “ogre of Avetrana” because of his dirty fingernails and soiled clothing
He had spent several years as a gravedigger and gardener at a cemetery in Germany before returning to Puglia
Sarah was supposed to meet her cousin Sabrina at the Misseri family house
He told police in August that he never saw her arrive even though several eye witnesses reported seeing her walk through the gates of the villa
Suspicion grew when weeks after the murder
he was the one who found Sarah’s burnt cell phone with the SIM card missing
Police soon learned that Sarah had told more than a few friends that her uncle had been molesting her for months and one Italian magazine even reported that the police believed that the 15 year-old was pregnant with her uncle’s child
still at the height of the missing persons search
appeared on RAI Television’s popular missing person’s program Chi l’a Visto
The show was broadcast live from the Misseri family kitchen
while Misseri himself was being interrogated at the police station downtown
Misseri was confessing in detail to how he had strangled Sarah in his garage
and then dumped her in an old well outside of town
Sarah’s mother heard the morbid news through an ear piece in front of 3.5 million viewers in the very kitchen of the alleged assassin
“I’m trying to understand,” Serrano said when she was told what police had learned
who defended Rudy Guede in the Kercher murder
Sabrina’s father admitted that it was actually his daughter who lured the younger Sarah to the garage and held her arms while he tightened the rope around her neck
Misseri was arrested on the suspicion of murder
and necrophilia and the police quickly recovered Sarah’s body deep in an abandoned well
But it was badly decomposed from the neck down because of the way it had been immersed in water for six weeks
The autopsy could not confirm whether she had been sexually violated
but there were clear signs that she had been strangled with a rope
She was buried October 9 at an open-air ceremony attended by thousands
Sarah’s uncle’s confession had provided all the details necessary for what should have been a closed case
He gave the location and circumstances of the murder—she had been killed in Misseri’s garage while his wife was napping in the adjacent house
He then stuffed her into the trunk of his Seat Marbella car
trace elements of her DNA were found there
He confessed how he burned her clothing and her beach bag
which explains why her cell phone was partially burned when he turned it in
But the Pugliese police weren’t satisfied with some of the details—or with his daughter Sabrina’s behavior in the days after the crime
They pressed the older Misseri for more information
they were investigating the growing inconsistencies of his daughter Sabrina’s story
Sabrina had become the star of the scandal
appearing on all the major television programs and giving frequent interviews to the local newspapers
but later tearfully claimed her father “should pay for what he did to Sarah,” she said
“Everyone should pay for what they do to someone else.”
police arrested Sabrina after her father admitted that she had actually instigated the murder
he admitted that it was actually Sabrina who had been the one to lure the younger Sarah to the family garage
and that she had held her arms while he tightened the rope around her neck
“We wanted to teach her a lesson,” Michele Misseri told the police according to the transcript of the interrogation
“Sarah screamed and Sabrina told me ‘let’s finish her off
who has been deemed the “new Amanda Knox” by the local press
Her mother Cosima Serrano believes her daughter over her husband and has spoken vehemently in her daughter’s defense
“I want to visit my husband in prison,” she said last week
“I need to tell him that his daughter is in a cell next to his based on his lies and filth.”
Whether Sabrina’s father is simply trying to point the finger at his daughter to save his own skin is the crux of this mystery
Sabrina can be jailed for up to a year without charge as the police build their case
The circumstances are hauntingly similar to the initial investigation into the Kercher murder with headlines painting a picture of Sabrina not so differently than they did of Amanda Knox in early 2007
Sabrina changed her story several times and her alibi has yet to be corroborated
Local investigators say it could have been jealousy since the two cousins had their romantic sights set on the same local young man
there is scant hard forensic evidence that links Sabrina to her cousin’s murder
that might not make any difference in innocence or guilt

Witnesses testified to several instances of jealousy among Sabrina and Sarah due to attention from others
Sabrina harbored resentment against Sarah due to the latter's youth and popularity
These testimonies provided significant pieces in the prosecution case in which a house full of tension had led to the murder of Sarah
The media's involvement further added another disturbing dimension. The public came to know of Sarah Scazzi's murder in real-time during a live television transmission
it was during this live broadcast that she received news of Michele Misseri's confession
leading to an unforgettable and deeply unsettling moment
This sensational approach to the coverage of the case received a lot of criticism for being insensitive
As reported by Unione Sarda, in 2015, the court sentenced Sabrina Misseri and Cosima Serrano to life imprisonment for their actions in Sarah Scazzi's murder
Michele Misseri initially confessed and received an eight-year sentence for his role in keeping the body
The case engraved its mark on Italian society to the extent that debates surrounding media ethics
But Michele's later declarations when he expressed the wish to remain in prison even after completing his sentence gave a poignant touch to the aftermath

will return to Disney+ with a new twist: details
centered on the crime of Sarah Scazzi and composed of 4 episodes
it was previewed during the nineteenth edition of the Rome Film Fest last October
After having addressed legal issues related to the name
today the final decision of the judges arrived
The original series stars Vanessa Scalera as Cosima Misseri
Anna Ferzetti plays the role of journalist Daniela
while Antonio Gerardi plays Marshal Persichella
Il mayor had requested the change of the title of the TV series
since “risked constituting a further attack on the personal rights of the municipal body"
underlining how the Avetrana community has always tried to distance itself from the prejudices linked to the murder
the series risked transmitting an image “ignorant
backward and omertà” of the city and its inhabitants
placed more emphasis on the location of the crime than on the crime itself
was postponed and subsequently broadcast with a new title: “This Is Not Hollywood”
Today the turning point: the Taranto Court ha canceled the decision of October which required the elimination of any reference to the city in the title
following the appeal presented by Antonio Iazzi
The judges held that the title “had no denigrating intent” towards the community and local institutions
it represented an opportunity for reflection that the author explored throughout the work
but also the media influence that overwhelmed the entire community
"The series finally reclaims one of its founding elements
the title could not ignore the name of the town where the events took place
Avetrana is part of the story and the protagonist of the series“

Roger’s Take: It’s not clear if the international release of “This Is Not Hollywood: Avetrana” has been delayed
as the show is still showing within Disney+ as being released on Friday
it’s likely the show’s release will be delayed globally. I’m not really sure how the Mayor thinks they can block a true crime story being told on a global scale and have a show renamed because they don’t want the bad publicity
Update: The landing page for the show has been removed from Disney+ since this article was published
