Former Oregon State football coach Joe Avezzano

Former Oregon State football coach Joe Avezzano died Thursday in Italy
going 6-47-2 — the bleakest era of the NCAA-record 28-season losing streak
Avezzano had been hired recently to coach the Milan Seamen of the Italian Football League
The team reported the death on its website
He was reportedly working out on a treadmill when he had a heart attack
Avezzano achieved great renown as the special teams coach with the Dallas Cowboys
helping the NFL franchise win three Super Bowls as an assistant coach under Jimmie Johnson and Barry Switzer
Avezzano came to Oregon State from the University of Tennessee
where he had been the offensive coordinator under Johnny Majors
Avezzano also coached with Majors at Pittsburgh
helping the Panthers win a national championship in 1976 as the offensive line coach
Avezzano played collegiately at Florida State and for the Boston Patriots of the American Football League in 1966
He is survived by his wife Diann and son Tony
“Joe Avezzano was a very special part of our Dallas Cowboys family and our organization’s history,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement released by the team
and no one that I know had a greater appreciation for the people that he loved and the lives that he touched
Avezzano also coached special teams for the Oakland Raiders for two years under Norv Turner until Turner was fired after the 2005 season
Avezzano and Turner were on the staff together in Dallas
“Joe Avezzano was a great coach and a super guy,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said

Joe Avezzano, who won three Super Bowl rings as a Dallas Cowboys special teams coach and was known for his engaging personality
Avezzano reportedly was working out on a treadmill when he suffered a heart attack
He recently was hired as head coach of the Milano Seamen of the Italian Football League
Avezzano was the Cowboys' special teams coach from 1990 through 2002
He was named the NFL's special teams coach of the year three times during that span but wasn't retained when Bill Parcells took over as coach in 2003
"Joe Avezzano was a very special part of our Dallas Cowboys family and our organization's history
husband and friend," team owner Jerry Jones said in a statement
We grieve with Diann and Tony and the thousands of fans who loved Coach Joe
He worked for Barry Switzer for four seasons with the Cowboys
including the franchise's last Super Bowl title season
football usually isn't the first thing that comes to mind; it's Avezzano strumming a guitar and belting out country songs
"Joe would rather have been a country western music star or on-stage performer than a football coach if he had a choice," Switzer said
Switzer laughed as he recalled a party he hosted after a Cowboys game once that included Charley Pride and a couple of other country stars as guests
It didn't take long before the music started
with Avezzano right in the middle of the group
"They were all over there pickin' and singin'," Switzer said
"That's what Joe loved to do -- pick and sing
who played for the Cowboys from 1983 to 1997 and was one of the NFL's pre-eminent special-teams players
"We were lifelong friends from my days at the University of Tennesse
He coached there for a year so I knew him from my freshman year," Bates said
"Having him come to Dallas and be the special teams coach in the early '90s was a blessing to me
"Those kinds of coaches that have the ability to motivate players and do it in a way when sometimes you need to have a coach in your face yelling at you and a few plays later you've got a coach that's hugging your neck
That's the difference between old-school coaching and the way Coach Avezzano coached
You knew Coach Avezzano wasn't just worried about his job
Current Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Avezzano's impact extended beyond the football field
he was an outstanding human being," Garrett said in a statement released through the Cowboys
"The impact that he had on me and the hundreds of other players and coaches who had the good fortune to be around him was significant
There are not many days that go by where we are not sharing a legendary Joe Avezzano story or using a trademark Joe Avezzano expression
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife
Avezzano served as head coach of the Arena Football League's Dallas Desperados for two seasons after leaving the Cowboys before a three-season stint as the Oakland Raiders' special teams coach
He also was Oregon State's coach from 1980 to 1984
an offensive lineman at Florida State who played one season for the AFL's Boston Patriots
remained a popular figure in Dallas-Fort Worth
He worked as a radio and TV analyst and owned Coach Joe's Hat Tricks

Avezzano announced his intentions in November of 2019 with a goal of opening in April 2020. Once restaurants were able to operate dining rooms in early June, Avezzano began to eye an early July opening. But Avezzano’s concern for employee and customer safety kept him waiting.
“I want to be a long-time staple in Dallas,” he says. “We will dot every single I and cross every single T to go above and beyond on safety for everyone, including not opening until we are 100% sure everyone involved is safe.”

Pizza is certainly the star of the Yonkers menu
The name of the place and the style of pie may be all New York
but the flavors are predominantly locally produced
available in both 18-inch pies and as single slices
like sausage from Jimmy’s Food Store and La Spiga Bakery hoagie rolls
A sports bar-owning music promoter might not sound like the ideal candidate for opening a pizza palace
televised football game or played a round of darts at Hat Tricks when Avezzano ran the place knows he’s far from a pizza rookie
and a greater representation of pub grub than the typical wings and burger fare found in most suburban sports-centric dives
“We worked really hard to make the pizza unique and high-quality at Hat Tricks,” he says
“We were always considered a live music venue first
so I always felt like our food never got the respect it deserved because it was overshadowed by the venue and being in Lewisville.”
Avezzano is as certain about what’s next as any other local restaurant owner right now
But in terms of what he can control for the place he’s named in honor of his beloved father
“I’m really excited to show how much more I’ve learned since moving on from Hat Tricks," he says
"We want to tie in a lot of old school values and recipes to this new place while staying creative and up with the times.”

For the past 46 years, Eileen’s Cheesecake has been serving handmade light and creamy cheesecakes ever since founder, Eileen Avezzano
began baking her delicious cheesecakes from her signature family recipe and “selling” them out of her apartment. With family at the heart of this women-owned business, Eileen’s is now run by Eileen’s daughters
who carry on Eileen’s legacy and passion for cheesecake.
Holly and Bonnie – both Cheesecake connoisseurs – love keeping their mother alive through these fresh and daily made cakes which come in a variety of flavors from Classic Plain to Salted Caramel and Cookies n’ Cream
They are the perfect balance of sweet and tangy and made with hand-pressed graham cracker crust as well as a chocolate cookie crust.
Celebrities and Instagrammers alike line up for these treats
and it’s no surprise that these one-of-a kind cheesecakes were also named “Best Cheesecakes in America” last year by Food & Wine Magazine.
mothers and juggling a small business – Holly and Bonnie are also working hard to serve their community and beyond! We were able to speak to them about all of this AND just in time for National Cheesecake Day
Holly Maloney: Eileen’s Cheesecake is a light and creamy New York cheesecake made with cream cheese and love
What are both of your backgrounds (Holly and Bonnie?)
Bonnie Ponte: Eileen moved to NYC when she was 18 years old
she worked for RCA records and dreamed of becoming a Rockette
She said she felt she was meant to do great things when she moved to New York from Philadelphia – she was right! When I was in high school she ran our Eileen’s Café in Rego Park
My background is in building code consulting/permitting and Holly’s background is in advertising. However
both Holly and I worked for my mom every holiday.
What are 3 lessons your mom taught you about running a business
What are 3 lessons you can share with other small biz owners
Holly Maloney: There is no can’t only won’t
what are some of your favorite “days” or special parts of your job
you understand that holidays are when we work the most. Our mom would shine during the hardest working days of the year because she absolutely loved how her passion was a part of people’s holiday tradition
No matter where Bonnie & I were in our lives and careers
we always worked the holidays with our mom
so even though we worked through every holiday
it was always about family and tradition.
Holly Maloney: Bonnie and I both had/have careers
I left the advertising industry after 16 years when my step-dad’s health diminished and he needed to retire from the bakery
Bonnie and I always planned to grow the business and our mom’s legacy
so it was the perfect time for me to join mom full time. That was about 10 years ago. So
I would go back to the advertising industry
Was taking over the family biz always important to you
The three of us were always glued together – hence our logo – and our bond goes far beyond any earthly explanation
Our mom is still very much with us in everything we do and every decision we make
This is all about living the lessons she taught us while sharing the love and passion of delicious cheesecake and beyond. You can taste the love and quality in every bite
Being working women in today’s society is hard
is it especially tough in the food and beverage space
but we were taught by the best. This business and I were born a few months apart
in 47 years I have witnessed and or experienced every challenge our mom went through up to and including 9/11
a fire that was in the apartment above our bakery
but still shut our storefront down for over 6 months and many other bumps along the way. Watching how our mom dealt with hard times taught us to rise to the occasion
look for the silver lining and persevere- find a way
who started baking cheesecake at home many years ago
do when her store is shut down due to a fire
finds a commissary the very same day that we could bake in
I can still remember her calling the restaurants and cafes she wholesaled to that very same evening… “Hi it’s Eileen
just wanted to let you know the store will be closed for a while due to a fire
we will still be delivering whatever you need”. Nothing short of amazing
I also remember a particularly stressful situation during the holidays one year
we had a tremendous order that was being trucked to big customer
the truck had stopped short and the entire order was smashed. Thousands of dollars gone. Eileen didn’t flinch at the loss of product
but was devastated that the customer would not be receiving this order as planned! It was about the people
and even when she needed the money it was always about the people. She reached a point where she could retire
Because my cheesecake makes people happy. And it always will!
I was excited to find out about National Cheesecake Day
Why is this such an important/meaningful day for you/the brand
Bonnie Ponte: When National food holidays became a thing – more importantly National Cheesecake Day
Mom was all over it! Every year on the anniversary of Eileen’s Special Cheesecake
she would come up with a new flavor cheesecake to celebrate the occasion. She would practically give everything away at the celebration
When people caught on to National food holidays
she decided to celebrate her anniversary on National Cheesecake Day- a day where everyone
Holly Maloney: Our mom never wanted the headache of multiple stores or expanding
although she had endless opportunities to do so
You know the saying bad news travels fast
delicious news travels faster! Eileen quickly became world famous. When people come to New York they want cheesecake
and then they tell someone who tells someone who tells someone and so on
Eileen has baked with iron chefs around the world dubbed in every language
She is also in tour guide books around the world
so people find us when they come to New York
The future holds so much promise to expand
For more on Eileen’s, visit: eileenscheesecake.com. Eileen’s is offering a complimentary classic individual cheesecake when you buy any cheesecake from on Thursday, July 30th, 2020. Don’t forget to follow along on Instagram at @EileensCheesecake
Panoz evaluating new opportunities for Avezzano GT4 amid recent SRO homologation…
The Panoz Avezzano GT4 could soon be seen outside of Pirelli World Challenge competition
with multiple programs under consideration for the future
which made its PWC debut last year running with an interim GTS version of the car
recently received full SRO GT4 homologation
which has opened the door for new opportunities both in North America and globally
who came out of retirement to run the GT4 program
wouldn’t be drawn on a specific plan but admitted that in-house and customer-run efforts are currently being discussed
in addition to potentially remaining in PWC next year
“We are primarily evaluating various options further to the Panoz Avezzano being granted GT4-homologated status by the SRO,” Milner told Sportscar365
we have many more doors open to us that could be promising.”
It’s understood that among the options being evaluated include the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge
which beginning next year will carry title sponsorship from Michelin as part of the tire manufacturer’s increased involvement in IMSA
the car is currently not eligible for GS class competition
“I think that’s where this racing team really belongs but that wasn’t possible last year because we didn’t have a [GT4-compliant] car,” Milner said
“They’re now also a GT4 series
and their rules are slightly different… and they have their own BoP.”
Milner said he’s become increasingly concerned over incidents in PWC relating to his team
including several last weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
although said they remain committed to the series
The team expanded into a two-car entry this year with a customer effort for Preston Calvert in GTSA
with the Englishman told to surrender his position on the final lap of Race 1 after contact with another car
while James was excluded from Race 2 due to the car not being equipped with a catalytic converter
“It is fair to say that recent PWC officiating has given us cause for concern as to the safety of the series,” he said
some of the decisions they make are questionable and inconsistent
That could be because they don’t have enough experience or not enough staff
but it has had several negative impacts on our team’s results that we feel could have been avoided.”
Milner has been fined and banned from any further interactions with Race Control this year for “inappropriate language to officials” and “not exhibiting good sportsmanship” following the CTMP incident
Milner indicated that Race Control took offense to his criticism over the recent calls

Who said that the best classic car events in Italy are only in the north of the country or in Sicily
The unique mix of machinery present at the Circuito di Avezzano and the breathtaking scenery of the Abruzzo region
like few others in the country—all the charm
I attended this event for the first time a few weeks ago
and though it isn’t the longest running historic race in Italy
it is already in its seventh edition and rests on a past that extends much further back
Circuito di Avezzano takes place in a wild
and the location’s lower key allows event participants and spectators a fuller immersion in a land rich with history and beauty
It's hard to believe the Circuito of Avezzano is a “city” track that was used regularly until the 1950s
but in so many ways nothing else has changed
so it becomes a bit easier to picture against backdrops that were much the same as they were half a century ago
with everyone going for outright speed rather than pacing themselves to hit a targeted average
it's not the same kind of competition today
as it is forbidden to go barreling through a village as fast as possible nowadays
and competitors in the modern reinterpretation race along the original route with more spirit than usual
The best part is that fellow enthusiasts line the city sections of the course
Civita d'Antino along the way: more gems from an ancient world
A preview was scheduled on the Thursday before the start for the teams coming from abroad
but we found a few locals joining them too
They spent all day driving up the Gran Sasso
the highest chain on the continental side of the Appennini mountains
The event finished on Saturday around midnight
and after spending a day and a half of deep in the mountains
visiting little time-capsule villages like Pescina
I wondered how the organizers managed to get all 87 cars of this year's Circuito to fit in Roccavivi
It was more than just a car show at the end though
with the unique combination of local folk traditions and classic car passion generating an intriguing atmosphere of a different time altogether
All around us were traditional customs being manifested
but we were also treated to a play inspired by a ritual Abruzzese marriage
The laid-back and relaxed atmosphere with many of the same aficionados coming together every year creates a welcoming feeling
Some of the participants visited from Japan and the USA
and Belgium just to enjoy this motoring "summer party" altogether
seeing as the capital is only slightly more than one hour away
they brought spectacular cars with them such as the Alfa Romeo 1750 GS
including a fabulous black Touring bodied example
The showcase of historic vehicles is definitely my favorite kind
with an exciting gathering of only open-top cars mostly built for competition
like a 1958 Maserati OSCA 375 F2 and a unique 1950 racing Cisitalia Colombo came from the Di Lorenzo collection
One might also spot the "Micia," a 1949 Fiat Stanguellini featured on film on Petrolicious some time ago
or 1966 Ginetta G4 still with its British Racing Green livery
a Riley driven by a young Italian lady who is fond of pre-war cars was a highlight for me
Also present was a couple of 1930s 4 1/2 Litre blower Bentleys
one of which had Eddie McGuire of the Benjafield's Racing Club (a car club in the spirit of the original Bentley Boys) at the enormous wheel
The Circuito di Avezzano also offered a great display of rare Ectceterini
the so-called handmade tiny Italian racing cars that were born in artisanal workshops
Many of them are based on the Fiat Topolinos
but Erminis are often considered among this group too
Two of the only 19 cars ever produced by the Florence-based small manufacturer took part in the Circuito this year
both with 1100cc engines from an Ermini: one car was built in 1955 with a Maserati 150-inspired body by Frua
exploring the Abruzzo region among a group of truly classic cars was a deeply enjoyable excuse to spend a few days outside in the summertime gabbing about cars with friends

Ian James working to keep Panoz Avezzano GT4s on Pirelli GT4 America grid next year…
Panoz is aiming to be back on the Pirelli GT4 America grid “in some form” next year according to Ian James
who said interest levels in the recently homologated GT4 car has been high
which has continued racing this year in honor of its founder Don Panoz
has yet to determine possible future race plans
having initially committed to the 2019 season only
who has taken on a team manager/principal role in addition to his driving duties at Team Panoz Racing
is working on multiple options that could see the Panoz Avezzano GT4 remain on the GT4 America grid
“We hope to be back in some form,” James told Sportscar365
“We’re looking at some options and hope to see some Panozes on the grid
“My goal is to keep Panoz on a race track somewhere around the world
“We’ve really enjoyed racing here in [SRO America]
The car is competitive and is a fan favorite
there’s so many people that still recognize that and they love to see a Panoz drive around
Fingers crossed we can keep it out there.”
James said there’s been increased interest in the car since it received its GT4 homologation by the SRO in the summer
“There’s a lot of interest in the car,” he said
“Now that it’s got its homologation papers
it’s definitely been given a bit of impetus
“There’s definitely inquiries for projects to run it
Money makes motor racing go around so we’ll see how that all pans out.”
Panoz’s customer effort of Matt Keegan and Preston Calvert
who have shared an Avezzano GT4 this season in the GT4 America SprintX
hold a 40-point lead in the Am class title race heading into next month’s season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Having taken on the management duties from Tom Milner
who departed the team during the off-season
James said he’s been enjoying his increased role with the team.
The 45-year-old Englishman has hinted that it could be an “evolution” of his career in the future
“I’ve really enjoyed as a dual team manager/principal/driver role,” he said
“It’s a lot more challenging and a lot more stuff to do
“But I’ve had a great group of people to work with
“It’s probably the evolution of my career
We’ll see more of that in the future.”

The Panoz Avezzano will start life as a Pirelli World Challenge GTS-spec car
before a planned transition to SRO GT4 homologation
according to Panoz Racing Team boss Tom Milner
Milner has revealed further details on the team’s planned two-car PWC effort
which is set to see Ian James debut the V8-powered car in next month’s season-opener at St
“Right now we are trying to get a car together and overcome the political hurdles
it makes more sense,” Milner told Sportscar365
“We have a much better opportunity to get the project on its legs quicker
The essential parts of the car will be built to GT4 rules
but you can always do that once you know [the details]
it’s better to call it a GTS car.”
Milner said an initial test is planned at a “top secret” location on March 1-2
ahead of the PWC season-opener nine days later
A final decision on whether the team would debut with two cars has not yet been made
which in racing terms nothing is ever on schedule,” he said
“You are never ahead of the curve unless you are a multi-billion dollar car manufacturer and you have a long-term plan
and most people in racing don’t have a long-term plan
“But the goal is to build GT4 cars and to have an opportunity to sell cars
not only here in this country but also somewhere else
“The Panoz organization is interested in China and what’s happening there
“To me it’s just a case of what’s the most experienced
quickest thing we can do that we can get going?”
While Milner said Panoz’s immediate focus will be on PWC
he expects the program to expand in the coming years to include customer cars worldwide
we’ll have the opportunity to build more cars,” he said
let’s suppose we would go and race in Europe somewhere
then obviously we would have to have a GT4 car and not a GTS car
so I think that kind of stuff can be easily achieved
“Whatever the requirements are of how many street cars we have to build
that’s a different matter and we’ll deal with that once it actually becomes a [reality].”
Milner said he’s yet to decide on the team’s second driver but admitted there’s a large crop of candidates
“But first I’d like to see how this actually goes with Ian
“He’s raced for us for many years and raced an Esperante before (pictured above)
He has all of the ingredients from the comparison point of view
“After that we’ll decide what we want to do.”
who will combine his Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup program with the 3GT Racing Lexus squad with development and race duties of the Avezzano
said he’s looking forward to the challenge
“I’ve always been excited at the development phase of programs
so getting back with Panoz and Tom is exciting,” James told Sportscar365
“It’s nice to be involved from the start and have a real impact on the success of the program
It’s a very competitive class and it’s where we need to be racing
especially in the first year or so.”
who makes his racing return since closing the doors of his PTG team in 2013
said he’s excited for his next chapter in the sport
“For me personally it’s kind of fun,” he said
“My real business is one horsepower now (horse farm)
it’s not really a business but that’s what I do
“You don’t spend 40-something years in racing and then turn your back on it
I’ve got a daughter thats involved in racing and I have a few friends in racing.”

Panoz Avezzano GT4 to race in Pirelli World Challenge…

Team Panoz Racing announced Friday that Ian James has been named the first of two team drivers
starting with the season-opening round at St
will be reunited with both Don Panoz and Tom Milner

American sports car builder Panoz has returned with a new version of its Avezzano coupe, this one powered by the same supercharged V-8 found in the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
The Avezzano made its debut at the 2016 Petit Le Mans and is essentially a fixed-roof version of Panoz's Esperante Spyder
Georgia-based company has built for nearly twenty years
the latest version features a V-8 sourced from General Motors
specifically the LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 borrowed from the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06—where it produces 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque
Panoz hasn't mentioned just how much power the engine is putting out in the Avezzano
What the company has revealed is that the engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission
It drives the rear wheels only and is kept cool by new vents in the Avezzano's hood
Other new additions on the car include 20-inch BBS wheels and a front splitter borrowed from the Avezzano GT4 race car
The cabin of the car also features a five-point harness that can be easily installed and removed during track days
extruded aluminum chassis and the choice of aluminum or carbon fiber bodies
You'll find independent suspension at both ends
and a fully custom interior that comes standard with leather and Alcantara trim
The price of an Avezzano starts at $159,900
though this is with a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 putting out 430 horsepower
Panoz hasn't revealed how much an Avezzano with the LT4 will set you back

The top challenger to the Panoz was removed

James’ closest competitor became Lawson Aschenbach in the No

Aschenbach managed to stay within striking distance
but ultimately crossed the line 1.523 seconds behind James in the Panoz after withstanding a strong challenge from Jeff Courtney’s Maserati GT4 in the final 15 minutes
It marks the fourth second-place finish of the season for Aschenbach

Courtney and Wisconsin-based JCR Motorsports settled for third
while Austin Versteeg for ANSA Motorsports and Rodrigo Baptista for Flying Lizard Motorsports completed the top-five
The first few laps saw fifth-place qualifier Martin Barkey spin from fourth position
Second place in the championship entering the Road America weekend
Barkey fought his way back to 11th to salvage some points in Race 1
Versteeg will start on pole for Race 2 on Sunday after setting the fastest lap of the race at 2:19.568
Drew Staveley provisionally won in the GTS-Am subclass for Ian Lacy Racing
slipping past GMG Racing driver George Kurtz on the last lap

He will drive the No 50 Avezzano GTS in the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class this season

DALLAS (AP) Former Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Joe Avezzano, whose wild sideline antics made him a fan favorite when the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 1990s, died Thursday. He was 68.
Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple confirmed that Avezzano died in Italy. He had moved to Milan earlier this year to coach an Italian Football League team, the Milan Seamen. That team said on its website that Avezzano died of a heart attack. Attempts to resuscitate Avezzano were unsuccessful, the team said.
Avezzano had a 12-year run with the Cowboys and became a popular figure in North Texas. Avezzano was the Cowboys' special teams coach from 1990 to 2002, prowling the sidelines as the team won Super Bowls in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Avezzano was named the NFL's special teams coach of the year three times.
Known affectionately in the Dallas area as "Coach Joe," he maintained a high profile after he left the Cowboys staff when Bill Parcells was hired as head coach in 2003.
He spent two seasons as head coach of the Arena Football League's Dallas Desperadoes, which were owned by the family of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. He became a regular on Cowboys-related TV and radio shows in the Dallas market and opened a "Coach Joe's" restaurant in the area.
"Joe Avezzano was a very special part of our Dallas Cowboys family and our organization's history," Jones said in a statement released by the team. "No one enjoyed life more than Joe, and no one that I know had a greater appreciation for the people that he loved and the lives that he touched. There was no one else like him."
Avezzano also coached special teams for the Oakland Raiders for two years under Norv Turner until Turner was fired after the 2005 season. Avezzano and Turner were on the staff together in Dallas.
"Joe Avezzano was a great coach and a super guy," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. "We are saddened by his loss."
In February, Avezzano took over the Seamen. Italians in Dallas threw Avezzano a send-off party before he left, Dallas television station WFAA reported.
"I am the long lost heir to the throne," Avezzano joked, according to the station. "They've been looking for me in Italy for years. Now they've found me and I'm going back and I will return to Avezzano. And that's going to be part of my travels."
Avezzano was the head coach at Oregon State from 1980 to 1984 with a record of 6-47-2.
the Avezzano was publicly shown for the first time.
