Sotheby’s added: “With breathtaking views and the picturesque presence of nearby Schiacchetiello, Punta Pennata stands as a unique and exclusive opportunity for a prestigious investment.” But the move has caused anxiety for the residents of Bacoli and its mayor, Josi Della Ragione, who said he would do all he could to ensure his administration bought Punta Pennata, which he said reminded him of Neverland, the imaginary island home of Peter Pan. “We have contacted the agency and said we would like to buy it,” Della Ragione said. “It is an integral part of our local history, of the scenery. It is a peaceful, uncontaminated spot and we want to protect it. There are also lots of restrictions on what can be done on the island and so it most definitely cannot be used for economic gain.” Read moreThe islet was a peninsula attached to the mainland until 1966 Apart from the 200 sq metre villa and the remains of an 18th-century cemetery the islet is largely a nature reserve and is popular with local people and visitors alike who swim in its waters and dive off its rocks “It’s where people go to get away from it all,” said Della Ragione Punta Pennata is also surrounded by the underwater ruins of Baiae, an ancient resort in the gulf of Pozzuoli where Roman nobility used to party and was at the centre of the Miseno military port used by Roman armies “Other than having an anthropological value because of the relics from the cemetery that are still there it also has archaeological value because of the military port,” said Della Ragione “It is where Pliny the Elder left on his mission Della Ragione could not name its current owner but believes it is someone living in Naples Sotheby’s has not disclosed a price tag but Della Ragione estimates the island’s value at about €5m (£4.2m) He said his administration had the funds for the purchase but if the figure was higher he would seek the help of Campania’s regional authorities and the national government His idea would be to turn the island into a sort-of “open-air museum” “It could be used by schoolchildren to study the environment,” he said A similar tussle was ignited in 2013 over Budelli an island off Sardinia famous for its pink-sanded beach But his plans were thwarted by local protests and an intervention by the Italian government a Sardinian judge ruled that the island be put back into public hands Budelli was, until 2021, home to a sole resident, Mauro Morandi, who died last week It is now managed by the La Maddalena national park authorities This article was amended on 10 January 2025 The caption and main text of an earlier version referred to the islet being 200 sq metres; that is the size of the villa IF you have ever dreamed of sunning yourself on an Italian paradise of your own now is the chance to buy an entire island - but you will have to dig deep The island of Punta Pennata just off Naples is located in the glorious Mediterranean Sea near the fishing town of Bacoli A fight is now on to own it after Sotheby's advertised this month that the 2,152 square-foot piece of land is up for sale The international realty website claims that the island is a "historical and natural gem" offering "a fascinating and unique retreat." While prices are available upon request, Sotheby's predicts it will be sold for up to £8.5 million or €10 million, according to The Times Upon hearing the news of the sale of the island, Della Ragione declared: "We want this island back. We'll do crowdfunding, we'll do anything. "This place has history — it was the Monte Carlo of the Roman era, due to the villas. "The fleet sent out to rescue survivors from the AD79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius left from here." whose lineage goes back to 18th-century Bacoli is determined to fight for the ownership of the historically rich slice of land He told The Guardian that his town has contacted Sotheby's with hopes of purchasing the strip of land just 100 metres offshore from the fishing village The mayor said: "It is an integral part of our local history uncontaminated spot and we want to protect it "There are also lots of restrictions on what can be done on the island and so it most definitely cannot be used for economic gain "Not even Bill Gates would be able to open a hotel here." He explained that the islet has "anthropological and archaeological value" thanks to its military port and ancient relics The island used to be part of the mainland but it split off in 1966 after a "storm surge," Sotheby's explained Not only would the successful buyer inherit the entire island and its "breathtaking views," they will also own the villa on the island According to Sotheby's the villa features a wine cellar and has seven rooms There is also a pier with direct access to the sea Bacoli's mayor told The Guardian that the current owner who he believes lives in Naples had left the island "abandoned." his estimations of its value are lower than Sotheby's hopes for the sale Della Ragione said that he estimates the value is around £4.2 million or €5 million This is a price he says Bacoli can afford but warned that if it is more he will campaign for further financial support from Campania's regional authorities and the Italian government He said: "We must deliver it to the public It must not be sold to a speculator." the mayor plans to turn the island into a kind of "open-air museum" to help educate children on the environment Locals are on the mayor's side with pensioner Angelo Rannelo telling The Times: "People feel really attached to the island and say they are ready to contribute to buy it." which should tell you how strongly I feel about the place." “444 Local residents of Bacoli, near Naples, were left stunned and disheartened when it was announced that the historic Punta Pennata island is being auctioned off by Sotheby’s. The community had been pushing to transform the island into a public park, unaware that it was privately owned by a local resident of Naples. Described by Sotheby’s as a “historic and natural gem,” the island is nestled in the crystal-clear waters of Bacoli and features a 2,152-square-foot unfinished villa, complete with seven rooms and a wine cellar. With its pristine views of the surrounding landscape, including the nearby Schiacchetiello, the island is being marketed as a rare and exclusive investment opportunity. Punta Pennata’s rich history stretches back to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which covered Pompeii in ash. Ships launched from what is now the island’s shores to rescue survivors of the eruption. Originally a peninsula, Punta Pennata was separated from the mainland by a powerful storm surge in 1966, transforming it into the island it is today. The island is also surrounded by the ancient resort of Baiae, now submerged beneath the sea, and boasts underwater Roman fishponds and the remains of an ancient military port, highlighting its historical significance. For Bacoli residents, however, Punta Pennata is not just a beautiful property—it's a vital piece of their heritage. Josi Della Ragione, the mayor of Bacoli, has been leading efforts to preserve the island as public land. In an impassioned statement on Facebook, Della Ragione declared, “Let’s take it back! It is our paradise on earth.” He has stressed the island’s importance to local history and scenery and vowed to protect it as a peaceful, untouched retreat. Although Sotheby’s has not disclosed the exact price, Punta Pennata is estimated to be worth around €5 million. Della Ragione has already reached out to Sotheby’s to express his intention to purchase the island, and regional and national authorities have shown interest in providing funds to help make this possible. Despite the auction being framed as an exclusive investment opportunity, Della Ragione made it clear that the island’s numerous restrictions on development would prevent it from being used for commercial gain. Instead, he emphasized the importance of preserving the island as public land for future generations. As the auction date approaches, Bacoli residents remain hopeful that they can secure the island’s future as a public park, ensuring its natural beauty and historical legacy will be protected for years to come. "Meeting and talking with Jadine was dazzling for me.  We are in Bacoli, a small seaside town near Naples, time seems to stand still, everything is very dusty and poetic, half-empty beaches and breathtaking views. This is the context where Jadine grew up.  We wanted to get to know her, we went to all the places that have a strong meaning for her: the church where her parents got married, unknown paths, and immense and lonely beaches where she spends her days. Jadine wears a heart-shaped necklace, inside it is a secret she did not want to talk about.  Part of the work was shot with expired film, this was done to return a nostalgic feeling and leave room for 'photographic unexpectedness' as a lexical form.  This work is dedicated to childhood." What did this project with Luigi Lista mean to you? How was it to revisit the places of your everyday life through an external perspective? I tend to see what surrounds me with an external perspective, believing that this allows me to be constantly amazed and enchanted by new details. It also makes me ready for any positive or negative changes that may come. How has Bacoli influenced the formation of your identity? I can still hear my mother telling me, ‘nu purtà a nummnat’, ‘don't let them label you’. So, perhaps the greatest influence was the town's desire to keep diversity in the shadows (admittedly, they were succeeding for a while). Then, fortunately, I realized that if this place is based on scandals and gossip, maybe I should determine my own reputation, annihilating the external stigma. And I succeeded. Despite the difficulties that a transgender person may face, I can say that here being Neapolitan makes you feel part of a community. Sometimes, when you live in the city or town, it may seem otherwise. However, when you meet Neapolitans outside of Naples, you briefly feel at home and understand that Naples can be anywhere. I believe this is the concept of belonging to a community. I believe there is nothing more liberating than sitting on a beach and watching the sea, or more generally, being in nature. I think it's good for everyone to pause for a moment and let themselves be enchanted and moved by the pantheistic relationship we have with it. Secondly, changing hair color makes me feel free. It reminds me that I have the power to change things. Finally, going for a bike ride or even opening a new pack of cigarettes also makes me feel free. This project with Luigi is dedicated to childhood. What would you say to your past self? I would tell her to take a break and breathe, not to let herself be engulfed by toxic energies around her, and always believe in her own feelings because they are never wrong. I would kindly beg her not to dye her hair black or get a bob. I would probably ask where she is. I know I won't stay in Naples, but I don't know which city awaits me. It terrifies me but excites me at the same time. Maybe I would also ask her to send me some money since living outside Naples surely means having a higher salary than what I currently have due to the dramatic job situation here. I am Luigi Lista, born in Naples on July 3, 1987, I have been involved in photography since I was 16 years old. My father is a photographer, I have always been dealing with cameras, lenses, filters, films. My photographic and professional training takes place in the head of fashion, at the same time I have done a number of personal projects. My interest has always focused on the search for the particular, the hidden, and the promotion of diversity. Over the years my way of observing reality has changed and become much more introspective. The approach to photography, and therefore to the project I pursue, changes according to my moods this leads me to work on different expressive and narrative levels. I do not have a reasoned approach, mine is a no-frills photography, aiming at the essence of things. I work to strip away the soul of things, relationships and situations. maternal grandfather,” Restituta says there are more Vincenzos and Luigis in the Di Meo line than we can keep track of One moniker that did stick with us is the nickname of all five generations of the Di Meo family: “Spigoni,” meaning “ears,” as in ears of wheat the Di Meos focused their efforts on that grain our first Luigi Di Meo would use his mules to transport wine on behalf of the area noblemen His son Pasquale succeeded him after the unification of Italy in 1860 and was able to buy land at the end of the 19th century It was an epochal feat and transition – this small parcel of land transforming their family from workers to owners of giving earth our second Luigi built the houses where the family lives today – but in 1938 the state expropriated the land because it was of archaeological interest due to the nearby remains of the Baiae thermal baths and other significant nearby Roman ruins the state granted the Di Meo family the right to install their vineyard within the archaeological site creating a unique relationship between the ruins and wine production that has no equal in the world The Di Meo family became the official custodian of the archaeological area on their land as well as the heroic cultivators of vines climbing through the opus reticulatum of the Roman walls on their border they house their wine in the cisterns of an old aqueduct which carried water to the Piscina Mirabilis cistern in Bacoli where the Roman fleet was stationed Luigi Di Meo created the La Sibilla brand and began to produce a bottled natural wine of exceptional quality The winery’s name is inspired by the Cumaean Sibyl the priestess of Apollo who cashed in on her title as oracle nearby The cave where she would proffer her sage snippets of wisdom is known today as the Antro della Sibilla Also well-known are the grapes of the Phlegraean Fields There are two basic ones grown in the archaeological area itself: Falanghina (white) and Piedirosso (black) Together the two make up the DOC wines of Campi Flegrei and both are beloved by lovers of the region’s wine Then there are two CRUs – these are fine wines produced exclusively in a delimited area and from a specific vineyard they come from the estate’s oldest vineyards The first is a Falanghina called “Cruna del lago” (The Eye of the Lake) and the other is “Vigna Madre,” a pure red Piedirosso ruby color with an excellent smell of fruit and a consistent flavor It can be perfectly paired with meat dishes is straw yellow in color and has hints of citrus Another of our favorites is the the Passito di Falanghina La Sibilla produces an average of 70,000 bottles a year of which only 10 percent remain in the province of Naples These can be found in the most important wine shops in the center (for example Vini e Cioccolata on via Andrea d’Isernia or Enoteca La Giarra in the Vomero Quarter) The rest of the winery’s production is exported mostly to the United States where it has a distributor on each coast It
