North Shore news powered by The Daily Item NAHANT — Town Administrator Tony Barletta has announced that he will be moving on to a new position as the town administrator for Manchester-by-the-Sea Barletta stepped into the position in 2018 “There’s never a really right time to step aside but Nahant is in a very good spot… The finances are stabilized a lot of the financial goals that we set for ourselves six or seven years ago we’ve accomplished and are continuing to advance,” Barletta said “A lot of the goals have been accomplished or are on their way toward being accomplished we also have a lot of talented volunteers… So I feel confident that Nahant is in a good place to keep making progress.” he said he wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving if it wasn’t in such a good place I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving… But I feel like it’s in a good place and can continue to make progress He added some of the big capital projects underway to improve elements like the sewer system and the sale of the Coast Guard Housing lots Barletta also included the Lowlands Stormwater improvements and the upgrades to the town’s recreational facilities as some of the biggest accomplishments in his term “The thing that means the most to me is the relationships that I’ve built with former and current staff “The time spent with them on advancing a lot of the goals the town had and working through a lot of difficult situations… the time they dedicated toward the betterment of Nahant that’s what is my primary accomplishment.” He said he hopes that his successor can keep the town on the path it’s currently on “The financial goals were the foundation for being able to accomplish all these other things keeping those as a priority and making sure the town is financially sound as well as trying to maintain the character of the community,” he said Barletta said it’s important to understand what the community has been about “Trying to keep that small-town community culture can be difficult because of the different policies that are placed on municipalities or the financial pressures of increasing costs and required services… It’s a delicate balance of keeping the town affordable for residents while also managing the finances of town government in a way that allows you to accomplish these very important tasks that need to be done,” Barletta said Board of Selectmen member Rob Tibbo commented on Barletta’s departure from the role “I consider this to be a tremendous loss for the town Manchester has no idea how wonderful a person they hired… And it’s my own opinion that Tony set a very high bar for the future town administrator in Nahant.” This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution be a leader who fights for the American people and gets things done not a politician who tries to say all the right things but will never be able to deliver on more broken promises,” Barletta states Donald Trump has proven that he is the leader our country needs to change the way Washington does business and I am proud to give my full endorsement and support to his candidacy I think that Donald Trump has the ability to attract Democrats and Independents who are frustrated with Washington and is our best candidate to defeat Hillary Clinton in November.” Rep. Barletta cited Trump’s rhetoric on immigration as a primary reason for supporting him I am discouraged that certain members of the Republican Party have spent more time trying to figure out how to stop Donald Trump than they have trying to understand why he is so popular in the first place We need to listen to the voters instead of elitists trying to tell us right from wrong voters have made it clear that they want change and are tired of the way things are being done in Washington I think Donald Trump is the best person to bring the change that Americans are demanding.” Barletta is the second member of Congress from Pennsylvania to back Trump. Earlier this month, Rep. Tom Marino endorsed The Donald. Barletta becomes just the seventh member of Congress to get behind Trump and Pennsylvania is now the second state where the businessman has received multiple endorsements (Trump’s native New York was the first) The support of these Congressmen could aid Trump as he seeks to win as many of PA’s unbound delegates as possible Pennsylvania’s Presidential primary is scheduled for April 26th Message for Lou…Thank you for your bravery and compassion for representing the will of your countrymen Let’s Make America Great Again United Conservatives will need to run a 3rd party candidate for President (ceding that race to Hillary) simply to boost voter turnout and prevent disastrous losses in Congress The sad thing for the idiots who vote for Barletta and Trump in the 11th district is that Barletta will still be in Congress next January while Donald Trump will only be the president of the Trump Tower Condo Owners Association and not President of the United States YOU Democrats are just upset that you are losing your WHITE TRASH VOTERS to TRUMP I’m just surprised that Bartletta let Marino beat him out of the gate to endorse the orange windbag Trump is nothing more than a very savvy conman It’s astounding how many people have fallen for his tricks and insane rhetoric Each and every Vichy Republican will be held accountable in their future elections or political ventures https://www.conservativereview.com/commentary/2016/03/blackballing-those-who-endorse-trump Wonder Twin powers activate: Form of a xenophobic racist; Shape of a tea partying metal patient Did Josh Shapiro "Tank" His Interview for VP From PUSH's website: "Here at push skateboarding for a cause we believe mental health is priority number one We are proud to say a portion of the proceeds of every push product goes into providing a mental health specialist on staff Providing therapy for not only all our professional skateboarders but also for sidewalk distribution employees and family The strain of professional skateboarding can be tough for teens and young adults often times they have no avenue to talk about their problems when most of their friends look to them as having the “dream job” or the “dream life” having someone in house to talk to breaks down the wall and stigma related to therapy and normalizes it we hope to share our resources and make mental health specialists an industry standard for all skateboard companies." Contributions or gifts to DCCC are not tax-deductible It’s been three years of sending check after check to Ukraine we had a President who just sent the money with a pat on the back and said let us know when you need more of our tax dollars and he will always ensure that Americans come first His idea to request 500B in rare earth minerals from Ukraine in exchange for economic aid is genius The business experience President Trump has is different from our regular politicians that just give it all away We are once again a nation that is leading and not allowing other countries to walk all over us This is one of countless examples from the last three weeks that shows the world President Trump is back in the White House Rare earth elements don’t get the attention they deserve from the news media but they are vital to our everyday life as key components of a nearly endless list of electronic devices They are also a commodity over which China holds dangerous dominance placing the United States at the mercy of their communist government it is past time we increase our nation’s supply of these minerals “Why didn’t the previous administration request REEs in return for economic aid?” It appears the Biden administration did not ask for anything After four years of a President that put other countries’ needs before the United States’ This deal with Ukraine for REEs along with his countless other actions over the last three weeks allows Americans to breathe a sigh of relief knowing we have a president who stands up for us This again shows the stark difference between the Trump and Biden presidencies Joe Biden infamously downplayed the economic threat to America represented by China He scorned the notion that China is a significant competitor of ours as China has been exploiting American complacency for decades both in trade and in stealing intellectual property But there’s another area where China has been “eating our lunch” that goes unnoticed most of the time: Production of REEs President Trump knows on many levels China is a threat it is alarming that China supplies about 80 percent of these elements that the United States needs — and worse President Trump’s creativity and brilliance to strike this deal with Ukraine removes China’s upper hand with REEs soft metals employed in the electronic devices which are everywhere in today’s world They are used in the manufacture of televisions and even applications in missile defense systems rare earth minerals help make modern life possible and should be considered a national security priority as former President Donald Trump was correctly holding China accountable for its cheating in international matters the communists threatened to cut off exports of rare earth elements to the U.S as the Chinese already had done exactly that to Japan a decade prior President Trump knows that we must be prepared with stockpiles and different sources for these REEs so that we are never reliant on China representing the former 11th District of Pennsylvania I identified REEs as key to the future of our Commonwealth and of our nation I was proud to help secure a $1 million federal grant to Penn State for a pilot project to extract REEs from coal waste China controls 97% of the world’s REE production until we are able to produce REEs we need a Commander in Chief who will ensure the United States has what we need to power our country Americans knew we needed someone who will think out of the box and actually get things done that’s why President Trump is back in the White House We again have a president who will always put America first Lou Barletta is a former mayor of Hazleton and former member of Congress NAHANT — Town Administrator Tony Barletta took time on Monday afternoon to discuss what he thinks are the biggest challenges and most pressing issues in the town and how he plans to address them throughout the rest of 2025 “The town’s finances are always number one,” Barletta said and investing in whatever capital needs that are on our plate right now.” Barletta reiterated that in the short and long term the goals of the town on an annual basis start with the finances of the town “The town is always challenged with developing a balanced budget with the limited additional resources that it generates on an annual basis.”\ He emphasized that the work to complete these projects is a collaborative effort between the different boards and committees within the town where he doubled down on stating it’s a team effort to keep the town on the best possible track “We’ve always tried ways to balance the budget without having to increase costs to residents of the town whether that be through fees or taxes,” Barletta said when reflecting on the town’s finances “We also look aggressively at how we can offset expenses whether that be prioritizing needs and wants negotiating contracts that benefit the town but mostly aggressively pursuing grant funding.” over 90% of the town is funded through real-estate property tax which is capped at Proposition 2 ½ (a Massachusetts law that limits property tax increases by municipalities) Barletta went on to say that at the same time people’s personal expenses are going up beyond 2½ it’s a priority to figure out how you accomplish things for the town with the limited resources that you have.” Barletta noted some of the big projects the town has on its plate He cited the Ward Road pump station project (which he says should be completed by this summer) the next phase of selling Coast Guard Housing properties and the goal of replacing people’s water meters as some of the top priorities going forward “It’s always important to work on coastal infrastructure to prevent future storm-related damage,” Barletta said He emphasized that Nahant is essentially an island town and the work to prevent future storm-related damage as well as maintaining the coastal infrastructure NEW SALEM — The attorney representing the New Salem Museum and Academy of Fine Art’s owners hopes to meet with some of the institution’s abutters to hash out differences as he works to secure site plan approval for this clients Marc Goldstein told the Greenfield Recorder he would like to sit down with the concerned abutters and their attorney to try to reach an agreement that will satisfy all parties “I’m always optimistic that we can find common ground,” he said on Friday Goldstein was joined by the museum’s director as well as Project Manager Chris Lowman at a Planning Board public hearing on Wednesday to discuss next steps A follow-up hearing will be held in the Stowell Building at 19 South Main St Husband and wife Vincent and Laura Barletta bought 37 South Main St from Vincent’s mother roughly five years ago with hopes of displaying their art collection for the public’s enjoyment and hosting fee-based events though some in town have been concerned about environmental impacts as well as effects on water and septic systems The Barlettas received site plan approval in 2019 and renovated the facility The following year they applied for and received special permits the Planning Board decided were necessary a trial court judge ruled the portions of the New Salem zoning bylaw relied on for the issuance of the special permits were invalid That case is now in the Massachusetts Appeals Court in Boston “What we determined was we needed a refreshed site plan approval,” Goldstein explained “This is meant to be a more fulsome site plan review.” said he is also optimistic an agreement can be reached The Barlettas started their art collection in 2005 when they visited New York City for an anniversary and purchased one of Klein’s original oil paintings depicting his wife and Nelida live upstairs as around-the-clock caretakers Some of Klein’s work hangs on the museum’s walls Laura Barletta previously explained she and her husband collect contemporary realism artwork which she said is a modern North American movement by artists who paint in the style of brilliant European painters The building was once a dormitory and home economics education facility for New Salem Academy which Vincent Barletta’s grandmother attended as a student bought the building for sentimental reasons and turned it into a single-family dwelling that was used infrequently Reach Domenic Poli at: center of Rhode Island's Washington Bridge lawsuit which also happens to be one of the state's top construction contractors in recent years remains locked in a tense legal battle that is complicating the Washington Bridge rebuild efforts Attorney General Peter Neronha charged Barletta Heavy Division in January 2023 with illegally trucking 3,500 tons of dirty railroad stone from Boston to Providence for the 6-10 Interchange project That felony case has simmered in Superior Court since with Judge Maureen Keough's denial of Barletta's bid to dismiss the case in February and settlement talks that appear to be going nowhere Massachusetts-based Barletta out of work in Rhode Island at a time when the state has a lot of construction work it needs done – starting with the Washington Bridge – and not that many companies capable of or interested in doing large Why didn't Barletta bid on the Washington Bridge project? When Gov Dan McKee in March announced that the westbound Washington Bridge would be torn down and the state would go out to bid for someone to design and build the replacement Barletta was already working on plans for reconstruction There were even informal discussions for an emergency fast-track rebuild when the state went out for Washington Bridge bids Barletta entered into a "voluntary exclusion," agreeing to not bid on any federally funded projects in Rhode Island or for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority while the criminal charges are still in play Barletta was already working (as part of a joint venture with Aetna Bridge and engineering firm Vanasse Hangen Brustlin) on a Washington Bridge repair and expansion project so that job went ahead despite the exclusion Aetna and VHB – because they were already there on the bridge – to do the emergency work needed to prevent the Washington Bridge from collapsing last December and build the westbound bypass to the eastbound bridge they had to get a federal exemption for Barletta to be on the project Aetna was one of only two bidders on a contract to demolish the old westbound bridge No companies bid on building the new bridge forcing the state to cancel the RFP and go back to the drawing board In an email response to questions about the Washington Bridge project Barletta confirmed that it would have bid on the Washington Bridge projects if it could Barletta "believes it could have completed the demolition and reconstruction projects for a very competitive low price as demonstrated by its history on such projects as well as completing them in a similarly competitive shortened time frame," the company said There is no way to know how much Barletta would have bid but the company this month told The Journal that it was working on plans to demolish the old structure and build a new one by the end of 2026 for less than $400 million That estimate resembles the initial price tag the DOT put on Washington Bridge reconstruction this spring Since the demolition contract came in around $18 million higher than expected and there are no firms bidding on reconstruction the timeline may ultimately end up being longer and cost more To build the new lanes and flyover ramps where the highways meet the company needed large amounts of fill – dirt mixed with rock – to lay under the new road beds At the same time that Barletta was ramping up 6-10 work in the summer of 2020 it was also working for the MBTA to overhaul deficient subway tracks in greater Boston allegedly ordered old unwanted "ballast," or the rock beneath rail beds from the Green Line repair project to be trucked to 6-10 – even though he knew it had not been tested to see what chemicals it contained When asked by Rhode Island officials for chemical testing records for the Green Line stone Ferreira is said to have provided testing records for stone removed from the Blue Line when he was assigned to work on another Barletta project the construction of a new MBTA train station in Pawtucket Ferreira allegedly shipped 52 truckloads of known contaminated soil to 6-10 without permission Last year, Barletta agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a federal Department of Justice case on the 6-10 dumping. Ferreira pleaded guilty to three counts of making false statements and was charged individually by Neronha in the state case still pending As the legal action moved from federal to state court the biggest points of debate have been over how bad the materials brought to the 6-10 interchange between Federal Hill and Olneyville were and how much Barletta executives knew about what was happening “Their actions come at the expense of Rhode Islanders' public health and their environment," Neronha said in a new release with the charges the company argues that no Rhode Island highway contractor has ever been charged criminally for violating a soil management plan Although the MBTA rock was not clean enough to meet the residential specifications for fill it had agreed to with the state it was not toxic or any more dangerous than the existing soil around 6-10 which has been traversed by highways and railroads for more than a century Barletta's attorneys argue in court filings The chemicals in the 6-10 soil pile that exceeded state standards for residential use "were detected at similar levels in the New England city background soil samples which included Providence and Boston," an April 2021 Rhode Island Department of Health evaluation said "Because the [polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon] levels between the 6-10 soil samples and background city soil were similar (e.g it was likely that the backfill soil [chemicals] came from normal human activities rather than a chemical spill or deliberate dumping." The Health Department did "not currently consider the backfill soil piles to be highly contaminated hazardous waste" and because all the imported soil was trucked away or buried under the highway by December 2020 "did not pose a public health hazard to occupational workers or nearby residents," the Health Department wrote Barletta also argued that Ferreira was a "rogue employee" acting outside his authority and his use of MBTA rock at 6-10 saved the company at most $50,000 a rounding error on a $280 million contract while the transport of Pawtucket soil didn't benefit the company at all (In its motion to dismiss the criminal charges, Barletta said Ferreira was assigned temporarily to the Pawtucket station project because of "political pressure" when "RIDOT pressed BHD to show some signs of progress at the RIDOTPawtucket Rail Project.") The state's attorneys have argued that several Barletta managers had some knowledge of what Ferreira was doing and the company was responsible for his actions Neronha's office declined to comment on the case other than to say that it was still pending Asked at a Washington Bridge lawsuit news conference last week whether legal actions against the state's contractors might be driving up the cost of bridge contracts Barletta said it has around 400 employees working under its "umbrella" that "rely on their jobs to pay their bills and live their lives." "Barletta Heavy Division estimates that it has lost over $500 million in contracts for work that it was the successful low bidder but was not awarded because of this 6/10 matter," the Barletta statement said IN – Today the South Bend Cubs announced the addition of a new firework show on August 20 The Tuesday night game vs Beloit will start at 7:05 p.m this game will no longer be a Paws and resulted in the deaths of two gay men On June 13, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced in a press release that it had obtained a “secondary superseding indictment” linking 32-year-old Jevaughn “Ledo” Mark to the deaths of 38-year-old Brandon Román and 28-year-old Robert “Robbie” Barletta Román and Barletta were found unconscious at Barletta’s home on December 27 a historic preservation expert and home renovation business owner Results of autopsies revealed the cause of death to be accidental consumption of drugs that created a fatal “toxic” effect Both men’s deaths were attributed to a combination of MDMA a substance formed within the human body after someone consumes both cocaine and alcohol Román’s autopsy showed traces of ketamine and xylazine or “tranq,” a non-opioid tranquilizer approved for veterinary use but not for humans which has been linked to a large number of drug overdoses when used Many drug dealers will mix cheaper fentanyl with other drugs like heroin and meth to increase their profits without risking the dwindling of their supply of party drugs Harm reduction advocates focused on preventing unintentional chemical poisonings or drug overdoses say xylazine is often ingested after it is used to cut opioids like fentanyl or heroin often resulting in a host of unpleasant side effects including the development of large ulcers on various parts of the body Jevaughn Mark is being held without bond on charges that include eight counts of unlawful distribution of fentanyl and heroin and distributing 40 grams or more of fentanyl between January 10 and March 13 The charges stem from six controlled purchases in which Mark allegedly provided drugs to undercover agents from a task force comprised of U.S Drug Enforcement Administration and Metropolitan Police Department officers the undercover agents requested “Special K,” or ketamine who supplied them with a mixture of fentanyl and other substances After obtaining a sealed indictment against Mark on March 21 law enforcement executed a search warrant the following day at his residence Law enforcement executed another search at a second residence tied to Mark both brothers were charged in a superseding 17-count indictment alleging that they participated in a larger conspiracy along with other yet-to-be-named individuals to distribute large amounts of fentanyl and cocaine throughout the D.C metropolitan area between January 2021 and March 2024 As part of that first superseding indictment Angelo Mark was charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon Jevaughtn Mark was charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and heroin possession with intent to distribute cocaine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause and manner of death for Román and Barletta police were able to link their deaths to drugs allegedly sold by Jevaughn Mark as part of the aforementioned drug distribution conspiracy resulting in the second superseding indictment last week Both Román and Barletta were well known in the local LGBTQ community and patrons of D.C.’s various gay bars there were calls from some to raise awareness of the unreliability of party drugs and the dangers of opioid poisonings or overdoses bars also hosted training sessions or provided educational information about naloxone a lifesaving nasal spray that counteracts opioid overdoses and testing strips that can be used to detect whether drugs have been laced with fentanyl The D.C.-based harm reduction organization HIPS, Inc. recently launched an initiative employing “harm reduction” vending machines with the aim of curbing the number of opioid overdoses or unintentional poisonings among drug users in the District of Columbia “snorting kits” that include paraphernalia to aid users in snorting drugs — which carries less risk of overdose than administering drugs intravenously — and condoms for those engaged in sex work The aim is to ensure those engaging in illicit behaviors do not put their lives ant further at risk and can respond effectively and rapidly when overdose or poisoning-related complications arise The death of The Vivienne has been officially attributed to ketamine use The internationally acclaimed drag performer Their body was discovered in the bathroom of their UK home in Chorlton-by-Backford on January 5 the performer's manager and friend Simone Jones confirmed that the beloved winner of RuPaul's Drag Race UK had passed away "from the effects of ketamine use causing a cardiac arrest." "I hope that by us releasing this information we can raise awareness about the dangers of ongoing ketamine usage and what it can do to your body and I don't think the full dangers of the drug are being discussed." The Food and Drug Administration has set its sights on "poppers," also known as amyl nitrite they relax the muscles and blood vessels in the body which makes penetrative sex more pleasurable for receptive partners the use of poppers has been a legal gray area Federal law prohibits the sale or distribution for recreational use with some states seeking to punish recreational consumption after roughly two years out of the spotlight Lou Barletta began to ponder what his political future might look like falling to the Democrat by a 13-point margin He had already spent four terms in Congress where he tired of the constant gridlock and political dynamics of Washington Barletta set his sights on Harrisburg instead congressman and small business owner would translate well to the governor’s office and help him lift the state out of the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic And so began Barletta’s political comeback Barletta expressed frustration over how Gov he felt that Wolf’s business closures were made in a subjective were going to have a long-term impact on students who missed out on in-person learning He also ripped into the Wolf administration’s decision to allow nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients discharged from the hospital saying in his campaign announcement that Wolf has “blood on his hands.” a mismanaged public health crisis and a wide-open gubernatorial race in 2022 “That’s when I decided I couldn’t sit back and do nothing,” he told City & State Barletta pointed to his name recognition and his ability to win over voters from across the political spectrum as two major advantages he holds in the GOP primary race for governor He added that his experience as a small business owner and mayor of Hazleton Pennsylvania make him well-suited for a statewide executive role “I felt at that time that I was probably the best person … in the position to be able to run and win,” he told City & State You can’t win Pennsylvania if you can’t get Democrats to vote for you – I’ve had a history of doing that.”  returning to the days when discriminatory laws forbade certain classes of people from owning land running businesses or living in certain places.” still defends the ordinance – dubbed the “Illegal Immigration Relief Act” – saying he was left without any other options to address illegal immigration and related crimes after state and federal officials failed to help him “I was just trying to protect the people of Hazleton,” he said adding that he “never wavered” in his attempt to do what he thought was right for his city Barletta established himself as a reliable Republican vote supporting proposals to crack down on sanctuary cities restrict abortions and repeal former President Barack Obama’s signature health care law “I was just glad that campaign was over,” Barletta said After two years to regroup and spend some long-sought time with his grandchildren officially announcing his candidacy for governor in May And if he’s fortunate enough to succeed Wolf there’s no shortage of priorities he wants to address Barletta listed the state’s economy – battered by the COVID-19 pandemic – as his chief concern As the state continues to try and rebound from the impacts of pandemic mitigation measures he stressed a need to make Pennsylvania more business-friendly by improving its tax climate relaxing regulations and streamlining permitting processes Barletta said state officials also need to take advantage of the state’s natural resources and create jobs around the development of natural gas and rare earth elements If Pennsylvania fails to improve on its business climate an exodus of working-age residents will only get worse what leaves with those businesses are our children and our grandchildren and so I think that’s going to be a big priority,” he said Barletta also said that the state’s election laws are in need of a rewrite He said he would support strengthened voter ID requirements as well as legislation that outlines a process to verify ballot signatures The former congressman has also convened an “Election Integrity Advisory Board” that’s tasked with helping him develop a “common sense solution to repeal Act 77” – the bipartisan law approved in 2019 by state lawmakers that paved the way for no-excuse mail-in voting in Pennsylvania Barletta has also expressed a desire to expand school choice programs tighten abortion restrictions and continue to combat illegal immigration – the issue that thrust Barletta into the political mainstream in the 2000s Supporters say Barletta would bring a reliable conservative voice to Harrisburg while understanding the everyday experiences that small businesses and their workers face Cusat said his family grew up next to Barletta’s and that he’s always been impressed with Barletta’s commitment to causes that are important to him “If he finds something that is important to the community he goes – I hate to say 100 miles an hour towards it – but he is dedicated to finishing it.”  who said he makes few political endorsements said he admires the effort that Barletta put into his own business prior to his political career “I always have a lot of respect for anybody that comes from a successful family business,” he said “When you have your own business like that I really feel that's a very strong quality to have.” Cusat said he believes Barletta’s business acumen will translate into an understanding of the experiences small businesses face at the state level But while Barletta supporters tout the former mayor and congressman’s resume as reasoning for their support others say Barletta’s background reveals plenty of red flags about how he would govern “I think you would see all of these things that Tom Wolf has stopped with his veto pen,” Abbott said pointing to abortion bans and a rollback of voting reform laws “All of these things that Tom Wolf has served as the backstop against you're going to see every single one of those things be pursued aggressively and likely to become law,” Abbott said of a potential Barletta administration Barletta is likely to face off against candidates both more conservative and more moderate than himself in the GOP primary Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale and others have already declared their candidacies It’s unclear what ideological direction the GOP primary will take there appears to be an appetite for Trump-aligned candidates espousing more consiervative views “I think there's definitely some anecdotal evidence that Trump is the center of the Republican Party electorate,” he said we're seeing candidates in these municipal primaries that are much more right-wing and extreme than in the past.” News & Politics Policy Personality Power professor Vincent Barletta amid renewed outrage surrounding Stanford’s handling of sexual misconduct.  Barletta, who has faced at least three Title IX cases since the early 2010s is currently on a year-long leave to pursue research related to his 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship A graduate student who worked with Barletta in Stanford’s Division of Literatures Cultures and Languages (DLCL) said that the leave is unrelated to The Daily’s investigation and was planned as early as the fall of last year The student requested anonymity for fear of retaliation within the department posting signs against what they see as Stanford’s failure to address sexual violence among faculty who is a professor of Comparative Literature and Iberian and Latin American Cultures did not respond to a request for comment.  University officials determined that Barletta had violated Stanford’s sexual harassment policy after he kissed his advisee and “blurred the lines of a professional and overly personal advisor-advisee relationship” with her.  the University allowed Barletta to continue teaching and formally advising graduate students he faced another Title IX complaint from a different female graduate student Barletta was not found to have violated Stanford’s sexual harassment policy though University officials concluded that his behavior towards the student — which she described to Title IX officials as “predatorial” — was “of a personal and intimate nature.”    his process was delayed due to a different Title IX case against him He was ultimately awarded tenure in 2012.  The University declined to comment on community demands for Barletta’s termination or explain the legal constraints the co-director of the ASSU Sexual Violence Prevention Committee and co-leader of SVFree described the University’s response to Barletta as one example of a broader trend in Stanford’s mishandling of faculty sexual misconduct “You could be walking into your classroom and be face to face with someone who’s committed sexual assault because Stanford is never going to tell you and they’re never going to take action,” Scarlat said.  University spokesperson Dee Mostofi characterized claims that Stanford “does not address issues of sexual violence by individuals within our community students and staff” as “grossly inaccurate.” Barletta led a research seminar this past summer for undergraduate students who came to Stanford from the City University of New York (CUNY) as part of an academic exchange program.  Participants were given the choice to opt-out of his seminar in the aftermath of The Daily’s investigation.  student in Iberian and Latin American Cultures (ILAC) and the ILAC graduate student representative described the current atmosphere in the DLCL as “strained.” She said that while many students have been urging DLCL faculty to take action to prevent further sexual misconduct their concerns about Barletta’s return to the department have not received a substantive response from DLCL leadership did not respond to multiple requests for comment.  Comparative literature professor David Palumbo-Liu said that “a disappointing number” of faculty within the DLCL have shown apathy in the aftermath of The Daily’s reporting on Barletta which he said has been discussed in internal faculty conversations.  But that to me is saying you don’t care because if you care including getting other people involved and creating multiple pressure points and ways of changing the situation.”  Outcry regarding the University’s response to sexual violence was sparked in part by a recently reported rape on campus, which followed a similar report on Aug The University has since temporarily increased campus security.  But some student activists say that Stanford’s security response suggests an attempt by administrators to insulate the University’s campus from outside threats while the administration turns a blind eye to preventing misconduct perpetrated by people who have designated responsibilities and spaces within the University.   how are we going to address these assaults within the faculty ranks in our community?” said Graduate Student Council (GSC) Co-Chair Emily Schell student in Development and Psychological Sciences.  Schell described the issue of faculty sexual midconduct as a particularly acute concern for graduate students given the power dynamics at work within the advisor-advisee relationship Several graduate students in the DLCL told The Daily that Barletta’s behavior had caused them to redirect their academic trajectories.  This is about all of our careers,” said Jon Tadmor student in Comparative Literature who learned about the allegations against Barletta from The Daily’s reporting before he arrived at Stanford.  the GSC is working on a resolution related to sexual violence in part to encourage the Faculty Senate to talk about the University’s response to Barletta’s behavior The University has not publicly acknowledged the allegations against Barletta.  Contact her at grosenberg 'at' stanforddaily.com!Grace Carroll is the Vol Contact her at gcarroll 'at' stanforddaily.com University Academics Campus The Erie Times-News also confirmed Barletta's death but was unable to determine when and where he died The Catholic Diocese of Erie has no role in funeral arrangements for Barletta and noted his death only for the purpose of updating the public disclosure list Barletta's victims included boys and at least one girl according to the grand jury and other legal filings which a woman filed in Erie County Common Pleas Court in 2020 claimed Barletta molested her in the 1970s when she was in grade school and high school "Barletta was a danger to children," the suit said Though the woman's lawsuit did not proceed in court because the statute of limitations had run out Barletta's behavior was the subject of several claims filed with the compensation fund that the diocese — in response to the grand jury report — set up for victims of abuse The Pennsylvania General Assembly never passed legislation that would have rolled back the statute of limitations to allow abuse victims to sue in old cases Reckoning:Grand jury report names abusive priests in Erie diocese, elsewhere "I hope that some of the men who were betrayed and assaulted by Barletta feel relieved at his passing knowing that he'll never be able again to hurt another child," said Adam Horowitz who represented two of Barletta's victims in claims filed with the compensation fund "Many abuse survivors agonize that their perpetrator — no matter how old or infirm he may be — is still molesting others years later "The bishop should remind his parishioners and the public that Barletta admitted assaulting 25 youngsters and that someone they know may be secretly carrying this burden alone He was last known to reside in an apartment in Erie Barletta started his teaching career at what was then Kennedy Christian High School Barletta taught at Prep — then an all-boys school — from 1975 through the 1993-94 academic year through which students from Prep and other local Catholic high schools aided the underprivileged Barletta — known as "Barts" — became a popular teacher who would socialize with students and take some of them on trips "He was very charismatic," one of Barletta's former students told the Erie Times-News in 2003 He was kind of a big kid in a lot of ways." Statute of limitations:PA Supreme Court ruling sets back victims, spares Erie diocese from slew of lawsuits The former student said Barletta molested him for several years starting when the man was 15 and a sophomore at Prep "He is a calculating predator," the man said in 2003 The statute of limitations for charging Barletta had long expired by the time Attorney General Josh Shapiro released the 884-page grand jury report on Aug The report said 301 priests in six of the eight Roman Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania abused 1,000 victims over 70 years and that the dioceses covered up the abuse The report listed Barletta as retired since 2002 the Erie Times-News reported that three Prep alumni who complained to Erie Catholic Bishop Donald W Trautman about Barletta said Trautman told them he removed Barletta from ministry in 2003 in response to allegations of sexual abuse Trautman also suspended Barletta in 1994 and required him to get inpatient psychological treatment in 1994-1995 The report said Barletta worked in diocesan offices from 1995 until his retirement Barletta's name was on the disclosure list and the grand jury report detailed the abuse claims against him Names released:'Search for the truth' The report cites Trautman's handwritten notes as evidence to support the allegations against Barletta According to the report: "In Bishop Trautman's handwritten notes he recorded the details of a conversation that he had with (a nun) about Barletta Trautman wrote that Barletta has abused 25 children Trautman noted that Barletta admitted to the number himself "Trautman also noted that Barletta needed a restricted ministry He added that Barletta was very defensive and that his abuse included nudity and rub downs and that Barletta vacationed exclusively with teens." Persico's approach:Persico: Abuse crisis reveals 'failure at every level' Barletta's case also prompted the Catholic Diocese of Erie to call out how another bishop handled sexual abuse allegations who died at 80 in 1990 and served as bishop of the Erie diocese from 1969 to 1982 Prelate's legacy:Retired Bishop Donald Trautman, who led Catholic Diocese of Erie for two decades, dies at 85 The grand jury report and its supporting documents detailed how Watson failed to act on a credible abuse allegation against Barletta around 1970. Watson instead transferred Barletta to a different school, "where Barletta abused additional teenagers," according to the diocese's response to the grand jury report 'Unholy wall of silence':Former Bishop Watson faulted showed "a complete disregard for protecting children from accused priests," according to the response contributed to "an unholy wall of silence that the Erie Diocese is now fully committed to shattering." Watson is also named on the diocese's disclosure list for failing "to act to stop abuse which was credibly reported to him." Barletta claimed the grand jury report was in error Barletta "absolutely and unequivocally denies the scurrilous allegations made against him in the report," his lawyer said in a statement to the Erie Times-News on Aug two days after the release of the grand jury report "While the victims of clergy abuse must be served justice for the suffering they have endured the accusations against Father Barletta are meritless." Compensation fund:Clergy abuse: Catholic Diocese of Erie fund pays $16.6M to victims; total costs: $31.35M The Catholic Diocese of Erie never took Barletta's name off the public disclosure list And the diocese never disputed the allegations against Barletta in the grand jury report including the allegation that Bishop Watson knew of Barletta's behavior and did nothing to stop it the diocese held out the Barletta case as an example — "an example that represents the historical failures of the Church."
