The 49ers turned over their roster this offseason
who have a combined 54 years of NFL experience
They added 17 rookies to the roster and have 38 players on their 90-player roster who have two or fewer seasons of experience
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan urged his team leaders to participate in the voluntary offseason workouts to show the way
“We’ve had so many players who have owned those [starting] spots for a while, and so some rookies come in and they just sit back and watch those guys. They learn that standard,” Shanahan said
via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle
“But now I don’t feel we have as many of those guys as we’ve had in the past
We’ve got to re-show that standard to all the rookies that came in last year
All the rookies that we’re adding this year
We have guys that know how to work the right way
49ers General Manager John Lynch said last week that nearly every player was in attendance for Phase 1
which is two weeks of strength and conditioning
The attendees have included edge rusher Nick Bosa and left tackle Trent Williams
Both typically aren’t at the team facility for the start of the offseason program
But Bosa and Williams are doing as Shanahan asked and setting the standard
“We have too many guys that don’t know what we’ve been through the last five
“And we’ve got to show them that in Phase 1

but he's an absolute superstar in the pass-rush community
Young defensive ends watch his tape to learn how to use their hands better
And defensive players young and old on the 49ers routinely ask Bosa during practice to teach them his techniques
Now, 49ers rookie defensive end Mykel Williams finally will get an opportunity to learn from Bosa. Here's what Williams said about Bosa recently.
WILLIAMS: “Extremely. I can’t wait to learn from him, really. I’ve got so many questions.”
WILLIAMS: I want to learn everything from him. I want to learn how he rushes. I want to learn why he does the stuff he does. I want to learn how he thinks. I can't wait to get next to Nick and pick his brain and ask him what he's seen and try to take some stuff from him."
WILLIAMS: "Yes. We definitely would look at his hand usage and drills that he did to get his hands like that."
Q: You have a foundation of a pass-rush arsenal with a swipe move and a power move. Where do you want to grow as a pass rusher?
WILLIAMS: "With my pass-rush plan. Like you said, I've got the swipe, I've got the long arm, I can go power, but to be a better player, I need to be more decisive in what I want to do in my pass rush."
MY TAKE: It's great that Williams will learn from Bosa, but Williams can't be him. Williams has to become the best version of himself, and that involves putting together a pass-rush plan with the moves he already has, as he said. I'm guessing 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek already has a pass-rush plan in mind for him.
At Georgia, the defensive coaches seem more concerned with teaching run defense with pass rush. Williams already defends the run like a 10-year veteran. And he clearly has lots of untapped potential as a pass rusher.

check out some of the key stats and figures from his time with the team
LOS ANGELES -- The Chargers released outside linebacker Joey Bosa on Wednesday night
cutting ties with their longest-tenured player and one of the best in franchise history
The move saves them $25.36 million in cap space
His 72 career sacks rank second in franchise history behind Leslie O'Neal (105.5)
Bosa was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 after posting 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss
He quickly emerged as one of the league's best edge rushers
making four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons
He set an NFL record with 19 sacks in his first 20 games
The Chargers rewarded Bosa with a five-year
a deal that at the time was the richest for a defensive player in NFL history
But injuries have plagued him since; he has played in just 28 games over the past three seasons
Still, Bosa was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl in 2024, albeit as an alternate, and his 14 games played were his most since 2021. When healthy, he has remained an effective pass rusher; in the Chargers' playoff loss to the Houston Texans in January
he had a team-high six pressures and one sack
Bosa made it clear throughout the season that he wanted to be a Charger for life
and he took a pay cut last offseason to stay with the team
he was projected to have a $36.4 million cap hit in 2025
which always seemed untenable for the Chargers
who with his release now have $90.6 million in cap space
Now, Bosa will navigate free agency for the first time in his career. Earlier in the offseason, he discussed the potential of playing with his younger brother Nick, a five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher with the San Francisco 49ers
"I always thought of myself being somebody that will play here and retire here
which I think not many people do on one team
and I think it would be a cool thing to accomplish
Watch the best plays made by defensive end Joey Bosa in his career so far
Feeling the weight of Father Time as he approaches his Age-30 season, Joey Bosa knows if he wants to reach the peak
Speaking this week after signing a one-year
the Pro Bowl defensive end discussed his football mortality
and how the chance to try something new and help put Buffalo in the annals of history was the main appeal of joining the club
which I'm really thankful for my career and how it's played out
But I'm ready to experience something different," Bosa said
And I think this team is primed to do that
and I'm just excited to join a winning culture."
A mainstay for the Chargers since his Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign in 2016
Bosa has had the opportunity to play in the postseason three times
his new team has been to the playoffs seven times in that span
advancing as far as the AFC Championship Game twice
But it's the ultimate achievement of playing in and winning the Super Bowl that has remained elusive for the Bills despite all of the team's recent success
Bringing a championship to Buffalo, a city which has gotten oh-so-close in the past but never quite grasped the Lombardi trophy, is a quest that Bosa said he doesn't take lightly, and one he's already discussed with his new teammate Josh Allen
"Josh texted me that if we do what we set out to do
we can really be immortalized in this town," Bosa said
Though the achievement of winning a championship with his team is at the forefront of his mind
Bosa admitted that he also feels the personal importance of the year ahead
hoping to prove he can play at a healthy and consistent level once again
Bosa has five Pro Bowl nods to his name from his time in Los Angeles
but only one in the last three years as he's dealt with various injuries
He's missed 23 games over the past three seasons
and in 2024 played in 14 contests -- nine starts -- but acknowledged that for a solid portion of the season he was operating at 60 to 70 percent
and feels that part of this fresh start involves putting his injury woes behind him and returning to the level of play that saw him produce four years with double-digit sacks
but I know when I'm healthy and I'm on the field
"...I know winning is obviously a huge part of it
but I think I have a lot to prove to people
That I can prove to myself that I know the kind of player that I am
and I know I've had some good moments over the last few years
but it's about putting it all together throughout the whole season and being available for my team."
With Bosa aware that he could be entering the twilight of his NFL career
the upcoming season provides him with goals of both a historical and personal level and hopes to follow through on both before all is said and done
I just want to do everything I can possibly do to stay healthy and to contribute to this team and be a part of winning," he said
I mean Year 10 already coming up and I just don't have that many moments left
and I think all that's on my mind is going to be football this year

The Chargers on Wednesday released Joey Bosa
making the veteran edge rusher a free agent just before the start of the 2025 New League Year
The move is certainly a tough one for the team and Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz
who said last week at the 2025 NFL Combine that he had the utmost respect for Bosa
According to Over the Cap
the Bolts will save roughly $25 million on their 2025 salary cap after releasing Bosa
This brings their current projected cap space to around $91 million
3 overall pick recorded double-digit sacks in four of his first six seasons in the league
including 19 sacks in his first 20 career games
That helped him win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors
But he's dealt with a myriad of injuries over the past three seasons including groin
Those ailments limited him to just 28 total games and 14.0 total sacks since the start of the 2022 season
Bosa's work ethic and resolve should be commended
He told reporters this fall that the pain from an early-season back injury meant he could hardly walk or sleep
Yet he battled back and gave the Chargers everything he could on the way to a playoff berth
what does his departure mean for the Chargers going forward
The Bolts edge rusher room featured Khalil Mack
Tuli Tuipulotu and Bud Dupree this past season
Tuipulotu and Dupree remain under contract
the position group will look vastly different
that keeps a vital piece on the field and in the locker room
Bosa's release means a fresh start for both a player who made five Pro Bowls and ranks second in team history with 72.0 career sacks
And it indicates that the Chargers could possibly add to that group in either free agency or the draft this offseason

The Chargers star safety was also awarded an honorary degree from the school
The Buffalo Bills and edge rusher Joey Bosa agreed to terms on a one-year
league sources told The Athletic on Tuesday
edging out the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins for his services
Bosa’s brother, Nick Bosa, plays for the 49ers, and the two grew up in the Miami area, where their father John Bosa played for the Dolphins. Joey Bosa steps in for Von Miller, whom the Bills released on Sunday
Bosa, who turns 30 in July, was the No. 8 edge rusher and No. 34 overall on The Athletic’s NFL free agency top 150. He was released by the Chargers on March 5
saving the team $25.36 million in salary cap space
Selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Bosa made an immediate impact on the Chargers defense with a 10 1/2-sack season that earned him Defensive Rookie of the Year honors
He went on to post double-digit sack seasons in four of his first six seasons in the league
The performance allowed him to reset the edge rusher market with a five-year contract extension in 2020
While still able to play at a Pro Bowl level in spurts
Bosa’s body has begun to break down on him
he missed a combined 23 games and started only 18
Bosa played just 50 percent of possible snaps
he still produced five sacks and 13 quarterback hits across 14 games and nine starts
Bosa’s 72 sacks are the second-most in franchise history behind only Leslie O’Neal
Bosa enters the equation for the Bills as the bigger splash at edge rusher they so desperately needed this offseason
it became painfully obvious that the team needed more from their pass rush
and they could only rely on Von Miller for 15 to 30 snaps per game
and Bosa instantly becomes a starting piece for the franchise in 2025 and one they hope can put their pass-rushing group over the top
Bosa has had a great career with the Chargers since entering the league in 2016
with a reputation as one of the most feared pass rushers in the NFL at one time
All the injuries have taken their toll on him
which led to not only his release but the Bills being able to get him at a manageable price point
If they can get a full season out of Bosa without injuries
the one-year investment will be worth the modest price tag for his position
Bosa will very likely take the place of Epenesa as one of the team’s two starting defensive ends
and he’ll pair with the newly extended Greg Rousseau as the top two pass rushers
There will still be a role for Epenesa as a rotational rusher
especially because the Bills will likely be extremely cognizant of Bosa’s injury history in how they deploy him
But the Bills had a bit of a disjointed pass rush last year by role alone
Epenesa was the starting right defensive end
but mostly only played on first and second downs
When it became an obvious passing situation
Epenesa would usually get subbed off the field for Miller
who would then force Rousseau from left defensive end to the right side
As much as Bosa conceivably helps the Bills
where the Bills line him up will likely be a work in progress to see how he and Rousseau can best fit together
He has shown the ability to rush from the right side throughout his career
Bosa has rushed from the left side the vast majority of the time
the last time Bosa had a near-even split in a single season between the left and right side was back in 2019
What makes it interesting is that Rousseau is a more gifted pass-rusher when lined up on the left side because that’s what he’s played the majority of his football career
The Bills began to use him on the right side more and more over the last two years
but he’s still at his best when rushing from the left
Bosa’s 11.5 percent pressure rate in 2024 is good
but Rousseau (14.4 percent in 2024) is likely the better pass rusher at this stage of their respective careers
That logic could push Bosa to be their base right defensive end
though they made an exception for Miller last year to push Rousseau to the right side
and we’ll have to see if they do the same for Bosa
The $12.6 million price tag from the Bills will eat a decent chunk into their available funds
though they still have some restructures they can dip into to create more space
The Bills have used void years in the past to lessen the first-year cap hit
and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they did so on Bosa’s deal for some temporary relief in 2025
the move doesn’t preclude them from more spending
and they’ll certainly need to address cornerback at some point
though they may have to opt for more modest ideas as free agency begins to wind down
With what Bosa is at this stage of his career, this isn’t a swing-for-the-fences type of move. They tried that by signing Miller in free agency in 2022 and got some temporary satisfaction
though the signing was largely a miss due to Miller’s torn ACL suffered in that same season
Bosa can be that extra piece of the pass rush they can depend upon in big situations
While Miller’s role was almost exclusively on passing downs in 2024
Bosa provides a three-down skill set that will help their overall room without having to upend the entire unit once the defense forces a third down
With how close they were to getting to the Super Bowl last year
and with most of their starting lineup returning
they needed to get better in just a handful of spots
he’ll be a significant improvement to what they had last season from the Epenesa
There is certainly risk involved with an investment in an oft-injured player who has slowly declined
it could be one of those solid improvements to their lineup to help Rousseau and the Bills’ defensive line get just enough heat on opponents to get them into the Super Bowl next season

Five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa reached agreement Tuesday night on a one-year, $12.6 million deal with the Buffalo Bills
The Los Angeles Chargers released Bosa on Wednesday
After making four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons
Bosa has been plagued by injuries since but was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl in 2024 as an alternate

There will be no brotherly reunion by the Bay
Five-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Joey Bosa is signing with the Buffalo Bills on a one-year
NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday night
The contract offers a max value of $15.6 million
Bosa, 29, is six years Miller's junior, and the Bills are hoping he can add a young veteran presence and supplement a pass rush led by Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa
The Chargers parted ways with Bosa, a franchise standard sine he was drafted No. 3 overall in 2016, to save $26.36 million. It's fair to wonder if Bosa didn't join his brother in San Francisco because the 49ers have spent much of free agency so far letting past talent depart
Bosa -- other than a drastic change in climate going from Southern California to Western New York -- seems to have found a great fit
The Bills will continue their quest for an elusive Super Bowl trophy with a pass rusher who's no doubt hungry for playoff success
Bosa's been part of just one postseason victory in nearly a decade
as the Bolts advanced to the playoffs in three of his nine campaigns with a 1-3 showing
having gone to the playoffs six years running with five straight AFC East crowns
Bosa's coming off a 2024 season in which he had only five sacks in 14 games (nine starts)
but owns 72 for his career on the strength of four double-digit sack campaigns
Perhaps the biggest question for both parties going forward will be how Bosa's health holds up
He's dealt with various injuries over the years and missed 23 games over the past three seasons
If a healthy and re-energized version of Bosa emerges in 2025
the Bills might well get the result they were hoping for when they inked Miller three years ago

LOS ANGELES -- For two seasons, outside linebacker Joey Bosa often spoke as if he knew his time with the Chargers could be coming to an end
It appeared that way at the end of the 2023 season when Bosa played in nine games -- after dealing with foot, hamstring and toe injuries -- and had a cap hit of upwards of $30 million. He even told then-rookie teammate Tuli Tuipulotu at the end of that season that they might have played their final game together
But in a surprise to some, Bosa was back in 2024. He agreed to take a pay cut to stay with the Chargers, saying he wanted to be a "Charger for life" and finish what he started nine years ago in San Diego
"I want to win. I want to be on this team. I want another shot with the guys in this room, especially Khalil [Mack]," Bosa said last June
"And winning football games is more important to me right now than making some extra money
So I think we have a great opportunity here
and then things can change down the road."
But 2024 was another injury-marred year for Bosa
He began the year looking like the dominant version of himself
a sack and four quarterback pressures in L.A.'s Week 1 win over the Raiders
"He is that player," coach Jim Harbaugh said after the game
He was great against the run and unblockable in the pass; a huge game."
Bosa played 16 snaps over the next two games due to a gluteal strain that affected his sciatic nerve and caused what he said was "some of the worst pain I've ever dealt with."
Bosa didn't play again until Week 8 against the New Orleans Saints
he played 18 snaps and was limited for much of the rest of the season
He played more than 40 snaps five times in 2024
Bosa played 49.6% of the Chargers' regular-season defensive snaps last season
He had five sacks in 14 games compared to 6.5 sacks in nine games in 2023
"I feel like I've been letting my team down by missing these games," Bosa
Letting myself down and it just sucks how these years have gone
Despite Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz expressing public affection for Bosa, his release
Bosa's $36.5 million cap hit for 2025 was unjustifiable
considering his recent struggles to stay on the field
Bosa's talent has never been questioned, and his last game as a Charger was the perfect reflection of that. Bosa had a team-high six pressures and a sack in the Chargers' playoff loss to the Houston Texans
with no guaranteed money and one of the largest cap hits in the NFL
the release was anticipated and saves the Chargers $25.36 million
giving them $90.6 million in cap space ahead of free agency
Tuipulotu will likely see an increased role
The third-year outside linebacker led the Chargers with 8.5 sacks in 2024
filling the void for teams in need of a pass rusher
but being healthy has been his most significant hurdle in recent years
Last June, Bosa said he'd had conversations about playing with his brother, Nick, the San Francisco 49ers All-Pro outside linebacker
though he characterized those conversations as not being serious
"It'd be cool at some point," Joey Bosa said
which I think not many people do on one team and I think would be a cool thing to accomplish
I'm going to worry about this year first."
Bosa was selected by the Chargers with the No
His Chargers legacy includes 72 career sacks
ranking him second in franchise history behind only Leslie O'Neal (105.5)
Bosa was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 after posting 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss
He exits as the Chargers longest-tenured player
Now the question becomes where his next tenure will begin
The Buffalo Bills are adding depth along their defensive line and have signed five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa to a one-year deal
3 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft to the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles) and had spent his entire career thus far with the Chargers

Bosa’s departure was the most obvious point of the offseason for the Chargers, given the $25 million in cap savings it created. Just as predictable was the Chargers then shifting a huge chunk of that money over to retain Khalil Mack
Looking at Bosa’s contract with the Bills
the Bosa contract is a $12.61 million deal with $12 million guaranteed and incentives that could push the value to just over $15 million
The Bills tacked on four void years to spread out the signing bonus hit and keep the cap hit minimal

there’s the matter of whether Bosa actually wanted to return
But conventional wisdom said he would’ve remained on the West Coast and played with his brother Nick Bosa on the San Francisco 49ers

but it’s hard not to wonder if they should’ve paid up to bring back Bosa in the rotation while in win-now mode
Maybe that was just impossible from Bosa’s end

The Los Angeles Chargers today announced the release of outside linebacker Joey Bosa
earned consensus Defensive Rookie of the Year honors after posting 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss
He set an NFL record by recording 19 sacks in the first 20 games of his career
Bosa started 83-of-107 regular-season games and four playoff contests over nine seasons with the Bolts
17 forced fumbles and four recoveries in the regular season
who eclipsed 50 career sacks faster than any Charger ever (67 games)
Bosa's 72 career sacks in the regular season rank No

Joe Hortiz hit the media circuit Tuesday at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine
The Chargers General Manager held a 15-minute podium session and later met with Chargers beat reporters in a smaller group
Here are five takeaways from Hortiz at the Combine:
Where do Khalil Mack & Joey Bosa stand
Perhaps the biggest storyline surrounding the Chargers this week is that status of Khalil Mack
The Chargers outside linebacker said after the season that he was going to mull retirement but Hortiz said Tuesday that he's had multiple conversations with Mack's reps of late
"I can tell you this: I know Khalil has – does he want to play another year
Khalil's got more than one year left in his body if he wants to do it," Hortiz said
Mack is set to be a free agent for the first time in his career
and Hortiz added that perhaps there's a chance the future Hall of Famer tests the market simply because he can
"This week will probably tell you a little bit more because people are out talking but we'll have good conversations," Hortiz said
"I'd like to get him done before free agency starts but Khalil's never been a free agent in his life
"So it might be something where Khalil says
I did it and I came back to LA.' If it gets to that
has 107.5 career sacks after notching 6.0 sacks this past season
His sack total ranks fifth among active players who suited up in 2024
"I had conversations with Khalil in December and certainly after the season and we've talked with his representation and just keep on chipping away at it," Hortiz said
Hortiz was also asked about the status of fellow outside linebacker Joey Bosa
who has one year left on his current contract but has a sizable cap hit for 2025
Hortiz didn't rule out the possibility of Bosa simply playing at that number this upcoming season
The Chargers GM then raved about Bosa's work ethic and impact on the field and in the locker room
and I know he wants to retire a Charger," Hortiz said
"Just my conversations with him and just -- he's approachable
he loves the game and he loves his teammates."
Hortiz didn't go there when asked about potentially restructuring Bosa's contract
"Not going to talk publicly about any contract stuff
"But just know this: I love Joey and I'd love to have him."
Bolts radio play-by-play announcer Matt \"Money\" Smith and Chargers legend Jahleel Addae recap the latest news involving LA and the entire NFL
Breaking down the top available players this offseason in the draft & free agency
the hosts preview what General Manager Joe Hortiz could be looking for as he builds the 2025 Chargers
starting with next week's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis
The Chargers have to figure out their plan at center with Bradley Bozeman slated to be a free agent on March 12
An internal option that Hortiz floated out
who has played both guard spots the past three seasons
And so I think Zion can do it and we got other guys you don't really know yet
Hortiz also mentioned youngsters such as Karsen Barnhart and Bucky Williams are other possible options
Would it make sense to move Johnson to center and then have to fill his spot at left guard rather than just add a center
Hortiz also didn't shy away from the possibility of the Bolts addressing the interior of the offensive line in the draft
"You always want to get young players that can develop and grow," Hortiz said
"All of our scouts go into a school and they say
"So you have those discussions about every player
The center group is a little bit deeper than perceived because we feel like there's some players that can play right away," Hortiz continued
would love to have him back and we have guys on our roster that have that flexibility that can go inside."
The Chargers are obviously set at tackle with Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt
Hortiz was also asked about a potential contract extension for Slater
"Rashawn's a great player and he helps us win football games so I'd love for Rashawn to be around for a long time."
Chargers rookie right tackle Joe Alt and 2x Pro Bowler left tackle Rashawn Slater sit down and react to each other's film from the 2024 NFL season
Alt & Slater break down how they're able to protect quarterback Justin Herbert when they go up against top NFL defensive linemen like Maxx Crosby
share what they admire most about each other as teammates
The Chargers currently have seven draft picks beginning with the 22nd overall selection in the first round
But they are also currently projected to have more than $70 million in cap space
the Chargers are in position to bolster their roster in more ways than one this offseason
That includes getting a jump in Indianapolis on free agency
which begins with the legal tampering period March 10 and officially opens on March 12
"It's a big week that way because you get a lot of face to face with the agents of our players," Hortiz said
we get a chance to meet with a lot of their agents while we're here
we can just sit down and continue the discussions," Hortiz added
you get a feel for where they're at if we already don't have that feel
It's continued dialogue from a UFA standpoint."
who spent 26 seasons in Baltimore prior to joining the Chargers
made it clear Tuesday where his roster-building beliefs are rooted
I believe in building through the draft," Hortiz said
obviously you have to spend money in free agency
We have 26 players that are still unrestricted free agents
so we have an opportunity to re-sign as many as them first and then attack free agency as it happens
"You use free agency to fill out your roster
to go get something you need," Hortiz continued
but I don't think you make decisions in free agency and then plan to adjust accordingly in the draft
"You want to be able to draft the best player available and help the team because the draft is a four or five-year solution when you pick a player," Hortiz added
Last year we signed a bunch of 1-year deals
Stay draft-centric and used for agency to build around it."
Hortiz was asked about the Chargers seemingly being linked to potential free agent wide receivers
the receivers I'm focused on are the ones on our team
the ones we're evaluating in the draft and the ones we're evaluating in free agency," Hortiz added
The Chargers surprised Hector Molina the Chargers International Fan of the Year with a tour of The Bolt
The Bolts started free agency early last week with the news one of their own pending free agents was staying
The Chargers signed Elijah Molden to a multi-year contract extension late last week
1 in scoring defense (17.7 points per game) in 2024
Hortiz was asked about the extension for the first time in Indy
as the general manager was thrilled to be able to get the deal done before free agency begins in mid-March
"Elijah was a big one for us," Hortiz said on Tuesday
"Obviously we loved what he did once we got him over to L.A.
the flexibility and the versatility he offers and what it allows our defense to do
"We played a lot of three safeties last year and that allows us to stay with what we found successful last year," Hortiz added
Molden finished the season with a career-high three interceptions
He also set career highs with 75 total tackles
seven passes defended and two fumble recoveries
But perhaps his value came the most from what he opened up for others as Hortiz mentioned
who had an All-Pro season because of his flexibility in Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter's scheme with Molden and Alohi Gilman holding down the safety spots
they get a chance to run it back and build on the momentum they created in 2024
Hortiz was also asked about the possibility of getting deals done with other Chargers free agents ahead of the New League Year in addition to Molden
I'm not sure if I would put a close on any of them
but conversations are being had with all of them," Hortiz said
it was great to be a part of," Hortiz continued
"You felt it out there and you guys saw it out there
we'd love to bring them all back," Hortiz added
View photos of Chargers Legend Antonio Gates at the 2025 NFL Honors in New Orleans
He has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2025 and will be inducted in August
the Bolts will be making their way to Brazil to start the 2025 season
The Chargers announced last week they were selected as the NFL's designated team for a regular-season game in São Paulo
the second straight year the NFL has played a game in Brazil
Hortiz was asked about starting the season in Brazil
as the general manager was excited about getting a chance to visit the country for the first time
It's awesome we were selected for it and looking forward to it."
It is the Chargers first international game since 2019
as the opponent and kickoff time will be announced in conjunction with the release of the full 2025 NFL schedule this spring
Of course a trip of that magnitude requires a lot of planning beforehand
something that is being continuously worked on
Hortiz said preparations for that have been well under way since they first heard it was a possibility
we've started talking about that," Hortiz said
"When we had hints that we may be going to Brazil
There are still things to iron out from now until September 5
such as when the team will head over on the long-distance flight and how far ahead of time they will leave to adjust to the time difference
"Still in the process of exploring the best options
and I think it's a four time zones [ahead]
"It will be a little challenge navigating it
but I think we'll have a good plan for it," Hortiz added

It was just two weeks prior that the Bills fell short
The performance only put more focus on Buffalo's own defensive line and the need for a more effective pass rush
"It doesn't sit well with me. It doesn't sit well with any of us," defensive end Greg Rousseau said this past month
I'm excited to put my best foot forward out there when it matters most
We're trying to get to the Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl
It is not a new concept for the Bills to build around the lines -- it's been a consistent philosophy under coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane
the team has dealt with enough inconsistency and injury over the last couple seasons to confront that area head-on going into 2025
Beane has addressed the group in a variety of ways in free agency
and while the moves offer a potential for success
leaving two of the team's newest signings unavailable for a significant portion of the season
How will Bosa's past injuries inform his performance? What is the implication of both Ogunjobi and Hoecht being suspended the first six games of the season
The Bills defensive line adjustments have been significant -- but will the risks get in the way of helping the team take a step forward
The Bills needed to add a pass rusher this offseason
$12.6 million deal with $12 million guaranteed was a splashy way to address it
"I just want to do everything I can possibly to stay healthy and to contribute to this team and be a part of winning," Bosa said
and I just don't have that many moments left
Bosa ranked fourth in edge pass rush win rate from 2017-21 among qualified players
beating his block in under 2.5 seconds 25% of the time
In the last three seasons that dropped by 10% to 27th in the NFL
A one-year deal comes with only so many risks, but for this organization, the pressure comes in building around quarterback Josh Allen and reaching the Super Bowl as soon as possible
Bosa being healthy down the stretch will be crucial
Part of why Miller's time with the team did not work out was a season-ending right ACL injury in his first year -- after starting out with eight sacks in 11 games -- and not returning to form
The team relies on a defensive line rotation
Bosa noted that playing a large number of plays in a 17-game season isn't realistic
45 plays and play all of them at a really high level
Beane has said that the Bills will have an individualized strength and conditioning plan for Bosa
The playing style that has brought Bosa past success has played a part in his injuries
Closely monitoring the starter's time on the field during the regular season will play an important role to his longevity on the field
We need to have him help us through the year
and then also hopefully we can qualify for the playoffs and have him fresh
The Bills will be without two of their newest defensive linemen for the first six games of the season as both Hoecht and Ogunjobi await suspensions under the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances due to positive PEDs tests
The team knew about Hoecht's suspension -- he found out three weeks into the offseason he had tested positive -- but did not know about Ogunjobi's before agreeing to terms
Both players said that they did not or intend to take the substances but are owning the suspensions
"I think the best thing to do is just accept it
accept the suspension and not have to do a whole bunch of running around," Ogunjobi said "Because at the end of the day
it's my obligation of what I put in my body
And you gotta deal with the consequences."
Ogunjobi's contract was adjusted from the initial reported agreement of a one-year deal with $8 million guaranteed
The deal he signed contains $5.43 million in guaranteed money and is worth just under $6.7 million with his cap hit for 2025 reduced by three void years
Both players will not be paid their base salary for the six weeks they are suspended
The team will get a portion back as a credit
related to bonus money from the suspension periods after the season
Both players can be with the team throughout the offseason and preseason
but this undoubtedly creates complications when building out the roster for the start of the season
Beane said the Bills wouldn't have purposely brought in two players facing such suspensions
but that other tackles were unavailable at the point they found out
Ogunjobi turns 31 in June but played at least 14 games in every season of his eight-year career
Beane described Ogunjobi as someone who can add "some interior depth rush."
The fallout from these suspensions could extend to the draft
The team might seek to add players that can contribute sooner rather than later
The Bills are going into the draft with 10 overall picks and three in the top two rounds
which will provide more ability to add players ready to see significant playing time
Knowing about the suspensions so far in advance allows for preparation but also complicates roster-building
Unlike the risks of the Bosa signing which lies more with performance and availability in the postseason
the reality is that the suspensions will force the building to be more creative with building the roster and could put pressure on certain players to perform quickly
Remember: Harbaugh won a national championship at Michigan in 2023
one year before taking the Chargers' head-coaching job
There will be a handful of Wolverines prospects available in this class
and Harbaugh would surely be delighted to add at least one
While tight end Colston Loveland and defensive tackle Kenneth Grant are popular names to potentially land in Los Angeles
Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network has identified another Michigan product the Bolts could bag: edge rusher Josaiah Stewart
Cummings is predicting the Chargers to select Stewart in the fourth round of the draft next week
which would make plenty of sense considering Los Angeles still needs to find a replacement for Joey Bosa
who the team released earlier in the offseason
13 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks this past season
and during the Wolverines' run to the championship the year prior
The 21-year-old actually spent the first couple of seasons of his collegiate career at Coastal Carolina before transferring to Michigan following the 2022 campaign
but he compensates for it with terrific athleticism and a great motor
his production in the Big Ten speaks for itself
Stewart may actually be one of the most underrated pass rushers in this year's class
so the Chargers would be pretty fortunate to snatch him up on Day 3

INDIANAPOLIS – NFL teams awash in disposable income now have a better idea of how to earmark their funds later this month
“Free agency is a great roster-building tool,” Arizona Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort said at the annual scouting combine last week
“We're right here on the cusp of the two biggest roster-building opportunities for us in free agency followed by the draft
“We're going to be active in both of them,” continued Ossenfort
who is projected to have something close to an $80 million bankroll
“We're going to make smart decisions and things that we think are the right fit for our team
both the person – (their) makeup – and then also schematically
Though Higgins and/or Smith could still be traded down the line
their tags dilute what was already a fairly thin crop of highly desirable veterans
here is USA TODAY Sports’ updated list of the top 25* free agents available in 2025:
WINNERS AND LOSERS: Of NFL's 2025 franchise tag deadline
the Vikings just weren't willing to do it for $40 million
CB Byron Murphy Jr.He erupted for the Vikings in 2024
named a Pro Bowler for the first time after recording career highs for interceptions (6)
passes defensed (14) and tackles (81) – all while often working on an island given Minnesota’s propensity to blitz
Quarterbacks only managed an 80.5 rating when targeting him
should be especially valuable given he’s comfortable lining up wide or playing in the slot
$80 million extension in order to keep him off the market
The two-time Pro Bowler is definitely the most talented blind side protector on the market and just played a full season for the first time in his nine-year career
attributes that should fetch him a fat bag
Stanley is also almost 31 … and just played a full season for the first time in his nine-year career
attributes that may give several teams pause
his value likely got a further bump after the Rams recently took LT Alaric Jackson out of play by extending him for three years
he’ll be 25 at the start of next season and – when on top of his game – is an impact player
Holland responsible for nine takeaways in his four seasons to go along with five forced fumbles
But consistency has been an issue at times
and he’s missed seven games over the past two seasons
good bet Holland lands financially at the summit of the safety market currently topped by Antoine Winfield ($21 million per season)
he also mans a position where demand always outstrips supply
Reed has averaged double-digit passes defensed over the past four seasons even if he’s not necessarily an interception machine (four total over that stretch)
a trait that distinguishes him from many of his peers
However penalties have been an issue in recent years with the Jets
and he has had the benefit of playing opposite of Sauce Gardner the past three seasons
He was having a monster season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024 – and on pace for a career year – with 50 catches for 576 yards and five TDs in seven games
suffered a dislocated ankle in October that obviously required surgery and relegated him to injured reserve
Such a setback is concerning for a middle-aged (by NFL standards) wideout
Yet perhaps it will be offset not only by the fact Godwin can line up anywhere and is tough as nails
but also because he could command more suitors (and money) with Higgins spoken for and this year’s draft not nearly as stocked with high-end wideouts as 2024’s was
LT Cam RobinsonStanley is more gifted when it comes to safeguarding quarterbacks
is slightly younger and generally more likely to remain in the lineup – though he was suspended four games at the start of the 2024 campaign
for violating the performance-enhancing substances policy before later being dealt to Minnesota
He posted one of his best seasons in years in 2024
a reliable tackler and has literally been the last line of defense for Chiefs coordinator Steve Spagnuolo
who has counted on him with confidence the past three years
Yet Reid typically doesn’t make a ton of splash plays – i.e.
generating turnovers or as a blitzer – so it’s little surprise that K.C
especially given the need to safeguard Mahomes
C Drew DalmanLooking for a highly reliable snapper to anchor your line who’s only 26 and has Stanford smarts
though he did miss eight games last season for the Atlanta Falcons with an ankle injury
Doesn’t mean he shouldn't get a deal that pays him at least $15 million annually
Cut Wednesday
he may not be on the market long given he's eligible to sign with a new team immediately
should have his suitors given the importance of the position he plays
He hasn't played a full season since 2019 – missing 23 games over the past three – nor registered double-digit sacks since 2021
Technically, he’s not a free agent – yet – but he is effectively, permitted to speak with potential employers after the Jets signaled their intention to end their two-year relationship with the four-time league MVP prematurely
Rodgers’ age (41) is just one red flag on what’s a sterling résumé from a football standpoint
Yet despite the off-field baggage he lugs into a locker room
he’s also a quarterbacking savant and a tough one – starting all 17 games despite a litany of injuries to his lower body in 2024
Yet over his final nine starts with the NYJ
Rodgers passed for 218 yards per game with 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions (95.1 QB rating)
It wasn't on par with his Green Bay heyday
but those modestly impressive figures should certainly be sufficient to get him a starting job in 2025 … maybe even with a contender like Pittsburgh given the mutual man crush coach Mike Tomlin and Rodgers seem to have
A solid player who’s just 28 and has 17 takeaways in seven NFL years
having never played a full season – a broken jaw cutting his 2024 stint with Detroit short at 13 games
WR Davante AdamsReleased by the Jets on Tuesday
he's 32 and two years removed from his most recent All-Pro season
he's played on two bad teams (Las Vegas Raiders
NYJ) and more than a half-dozen quarterbacks during that period
yet seemed to be recapturing his deadly form in the second half of 2024 after getting reacquainted with Rodgers
Even after a bumpy assimilation following his trade to New York last October
Adams' numbers projected over 17 games with the Jets would have translated to 104 receptions for 1,320 yards and 11 TDs ..
which seems like a typical campaign during his peak
His market might actually be more limited by choosing to remain hitched to Rodgers – if that
As a "street free agent" – meaning his contract was terminated prior to its expiration – Adams is already free to sign with a new club
he looked (literally) like the next Troy Polamalu
earning All-Pro honors for the San Francisco 49ers while wreaking havoc all over the field
Hufanga has yet to regain that form since suffering a torn ACL late in the 2023 season
but this might be the right time to invest in a guy who recently turned 26
Like Hufanga, Ward, 28, is coming off a disappointing season with the Niners. However given he was dealing with a knee injury and, more importantly, the death of his 1-year-old daughter
Ward’s struggles were more than understandable
He was a dominant player in previous seasons and very well could be again
– even if those days appear decidedly numbered
And Fields showed noticeable improvement along the way
earning his teammates' trust while adding what seemed an ideal dimension to OC Arthur Smith’s offense given his dynamic ability to make plays outside the pocket
Seems like there’s a much stronger chance Pittsburgh would choose to run it back with Fields in 2025 than Wilson
Despite the outlandish pre-draft comparisons in 2020
he’ll never become the next Lawrence Taylor
But the New Orleans Saints may have hit on something
solely using Young as a situational pass rusher in 2024
He responded with 5½ sacks and a career-best (by far) 34 pressures
but he should do better than having to settle for another one-year deal
who ran with maximum effort after finally getting his NFL opportunity
But he might fetch more money – whether as a starter or change-of-pace back – elsewhere … and might be especially attractive given his relative lack of usage (387 career touches) since the Cowboys signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2020
Is he the next Saquon Barkley
a first-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2021 who turns 27 on Sunday
is sturdy and consistent – he’s never missed an NFL game and has averaged 1,365 yards from scrimmage annually in his career
never totaling fewer than 1,200 in a season
However he’s also averaged fewer than 4 yards per carry during his NFL career
and (unlike Dowdle) his tires have significant wear after nearly 1,300 professional touches – which doesn’t include the heavy workload he shouldered during his final two seasons at Alabama
LB Nick BoltonHe’s unlikely to sniff the three-year
$51 million extension Zack Baun raked in from Philadelphia on Wednesday
But Bolton has been a staple in Kansas City the past four seasons
his touchdown in Super Bowl 57 the turning point of that contest
And for anyone looking to steal a little Chiefs magic
why not poach a productive backer who will celebrate his 25th birthday Monday
His age (34) will almost certainly suppress what’s left of his earning power
he has been a Pro Bowler in nine of his 11 NFL season – and the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 – and was ranked by PFF as the fifth-best player on the edge in 2024
Mack has always been stout against the run
however his 2023 sack total (17) plummeted to six last season while his 22 pressures were barely half the previous year (36)
He should certainly be an asset to a contender
but it’s a stretch to ask him to anchor a defense at this juncture
He might be more valuable to the ascending Bolts than anyone given Bosa's release
he rarely came close to fulfilling his potential with the Jets
his career was revived in Philadelphia by O-line guru Jeff Stoutland
Becton might have priced himself out of Philly
but he will do much better financially after earning $2.75 million during his year with the Eagles – maybe far better if another team wants to give him another shot at the blind side
he averaged better than 12½ sacks and nearly 36 pressures per season
eye-popping numbers for teams looking for pass-rush enhancement – and precisely why the Jets traded for Reddick last year
However his obstinate holdout in 2024 didn’t shed him in the best light
and that was exacerbated by his complete lack of production (1 sack and 7 pressures in 10 games after he reported to the team)
and his relative age and low snap count last season might create a better market for him than
But hard to believe there won’t be a buyer-beware label Reddick will have to overcome

New Bills DE Joey Bosa is laying down roots less than 24 hours after arriving in Buffalo
"I've already found a house to live in," Bosa said Thursday during his introductory press conference
who spent the first nine years of his career with the Chargers
is ready for a fresh start as he approaches his age 30 season
Bosa said his free agency process moved rather quickly
and in that short time Buffalo stood out as the right fit
"The more we really thought about all the details of this kind of team that we're going to and living in a new place
it just kept getting more exciting by the moment
And now that we're out here experiencing this nice town…I'm just excited to experience something new," he said
Bosa is already acutely aware of one significant detail surrounding Buffalo's 2025 season
"I think something that's going to be really special
Last year in this stadium," Bosa said referring to the upcoming final season at Highmark Stadium
Bosa compared his early impressions of Buffalo to his time at Ohio State
A passionate fan base that eagerly awaits a championship
"You're really living in a football town with an unbelievable fan base
Bosa shared that he got a text from QB Josh Allen

Bosa opened up about his journey the last few seasons
specifically having seasons below his standard due to injuries
He admits that even though he played 14 games last year
his health was less than 100% with nagging lower body injuries and a recovery from an early wrist injury
and every week you'd add a few percent to that," he admitted
The numerous injuries and time spent away from the game led Bosa to take a step back and evaluate
Bosa is determined to get back to the player he knows he can be
"I just want to do everything I possibly can to stay healthy and to contribute to this team and be a part of winning
And I think all that's on my mind is going to be football this year and helping the team."

Joey and the 49ers seem like an unlikely fit given the other needs throughout San Francisco's roster
There are much bigger needs on their team after a poor six-win campaign
They now have to worry about paying the likes of their quarterback Brock Purdy
paying a guy like Joey Bosa a decent amount of money doesn't make too much sense

The article goes on to discuss how researchers are “developing systems to help communities model how their residents are likely to respond in the event of a disaster.”

Speaking with reporters at his introductory press conference
Bosa noted that his release from the Chargers opened his eyes
"You go from being the man and the future, which it felt like I was a rookie yesterday almost, and now, I mean, I'm not old news or whatever, but it just happens fast,” Bosa said, according to ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg
“It's a business and I understand it."

Joey Bosa has a downright truthful and "real" reason for why he signed with the Buffalo Bills
Bosa inked a one-year deal in Buffalo during the NFL's 2025 free agency period
Of course he's getting a nice pay day of $12.6 million which helps
But the five-time Pro Bowl is heading to a very different scene
Bosa was the third-overall selection of the Los Angeles Chargers at the 2016 NFL draft
He's spent his entire career in sunny California and now he's taking on the Western New York elements
What was on Bosa's mind first and foremost as a free agent
"I'm getting old and I'm ready to win," Bosa said
his new teammates feel the same way about him heading to Buffalo
“That was a pretty, pretty cool signing,” quarterback Josh Allen said via video conference
"“He’s gotten to me a couple times in my career.”
Bosa had five sacks in 14 games last season
Bosa has hit double-digit sack totals four times
Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers' doing so was a long-anticipated move largely because of the roughly $25 million in cap savings it would generate for the team
Last year, Bosa took a pay cut to remain with the Chargers during Harbaugh’s first season and played in 14 games
His 72 over 107 games after joining the Chargers via the third pick in 2016 lands him second in franchise history

Conventional wisdom says the Chargers will hope to shift some of the cap savings with the Bosa release to re-signing Khalil Mack

Former NFL star predicts Los Angeles Chargers sign Davante Adams

which came less than a week before the start of the new league year
was expected due to Bosa’s large salary cap number and injury history
Bosa had a cap number of $36.47m for the 2025 season
but the Chargers will save $25.36m in cap space
Bosa was the third overall pick by the Chargers in the 2016 NFL draft, and went on to be named NFL defensive rookie of the year. He was also the last player on the current roster to have played for the Chargers when they were in San Diego. He signed a five-year extension worth $135m in 2020 that made him the league’s highest-paid defensive player at the time.
Read moreBosa played in 14 games with nine starts this past season after agreeing to restructure his contract
But his five sacks were his fewest in the six seasons during which he has played at least 12 games as he battled hip and back injuries
Bosa saw the field for only 14 games combined in the 2022 and 2023 seasons
He missed most of 2022 because of a groin injury
He was sidelined for the final seven games in 2023 with a foot injury
Bosa’s 72 sacks are tied for 10th most in the NFL since he entered the league and are second in franchise history
including this past season as an alternate
the Bolts will put a bigger emphasis on trying to re-sign linebacker Khalil Mack
who is an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his 11-year career
who led the Chargers with 8.5 sacks this past season
is expected to move into a starting spot with Bosa’s departure
Earlier this year Bosa spoke about the possibility of playing alongside his younger brother
“I always thought of myself being somebody that will play here and retire here
was also a first-round NFL pick and was a member of the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets
San Francisco 49ers DL Nick Bosa sacked Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff for a loss of 13 yards in the team’s Week 17 matchup
who heard the veteran linebacker act up in the locker room before kickoff
“I was gonna say something and didn’t because I didn’t want to create more of a distraction,” Bosa said Monday
I definitely didn’t think it was gonna result in that and didn’t know it happened during the game.”

When Winters (neck) and Greenlaw (soreness) left the contest
Campbell was next up in the rotation but wouldn’t go into the game
Asked whether he regretted not heading off the issue before the game
then he’s not the type of guy to be here.”
Said cornerback Deommodore Lenoir: “I just lost all respect
I’m a person that’s going 110 percent every play
If I’m hurt and the guy behind me is not backing me up and can’t come in or don’t want to go in
I just feel like he’s a cancer to the team.”
Campbell also seemed to be upset when Winters played ahead of him during a Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams
Bosa is one of several players who said Campbell’s abrupt exit wasn’t symptomatic of a rotten locker room
But sometimes when you bring somebody who’s older in
Bosa also shared strong opinions about the 49ers defense and coordinator Nick Sorensen. The unit played poorly on the road at the Green Bay Packers and the Buffalo Bills over the last month but has stiffened the last two weeks
San Francisco ranks third best in yards allowed
although it’s much lower — 17th — in points allowed at 22.9 points a game
Bosa said it’s clear his bookend on the defensive line, Leonard Floyd
is more comfortable than he was early in the season
“His performance from the first Rams game to this one — unbelievable,” Bosa said
And he noted Maliek Collins and Yetur Gross-Matos are poised to have career highs in sacks
“Watching that tape the other night really got me excited,” he said
this year — that game — didn’t turn out like we wanted
But I see a lot of guys in our D-line room and I want all of them back next year
I think we have all the players in our room right now to be that dominant line
and I think we looked like it on Thursday night.”
a sentiment he realizes fans and outside observers might not share
“I’m not saying that we’ve been playing great defense all year,” Bosa said
“Because our red zone (defense) has been awful
I’m just saying we had to throw in a lot of young guys early on and that can cause some confusion
But right at this point we’re hitting our stride.”
“You can’t play the play for the players,” he said
I think DeMeco (Ryans) got better as he went on
Bosa was one of the players who took part in Monday’s so-called “bonus” practice
He called the rib/oblique injury he’s been dealing with “decent.”
“But it’s definitely still there — gotta keep working through it

NFL Network Insider Judy Battista discusses with Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott about the team's priorities this offseason
The frenzy of NFL free agency is most often focused on the players signing in new spots -- but some of the most impactful moves each year are the cuts teams make in the pursuit of coveted cap space
In anticipation, here are a handful of the biggest names on cut watch in the AFC. Click here for the NFC rundown
Note: All salary cap and contract numbers are from Over The Cap as of Feb
but don’t be surprised to see Adams in a new jersey (again) next year
Allen Lazard’s presence in Florham Park is 99.9 percent a side effect of Aaron Rodgers’ presence in Florham Park
With the latter headed out of town shortly
I think we can all but guarantee the exit of the wideout as well
scoring five touchdowns in the first six games
but he disappeared for most of the rest of the season
he carries a $13.2 million cap hit in 2025
While New York can only save $6.6 million of that by cutting him pre-June 1
considering the price-to-production ratio and the departure of his longtime quarterback
EDITOR'S UPDATE: NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported March 4 that the Jets have released Davante Adams
Andrews is a core piece of this offense and locker room
so I don’t expect him to go anywhere in 2025
so maybe Bosa sticks around for another year
EDITOR'S UPDATE: The Chargers announced they released Joey Bosa on March 5
Houston Texans offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil couldn't contain Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa on 5-yard sack of quarterback C.J
The Bengals defense has been on a bit of a roller-coaster ride in recent years
but Sam Hubbard has been a consistent piece on the edge since he was drafted in 2018
both he and the defense as a whole had awful seasons in 2024
Hubbard matched his career low with just two sacks and set a new career low with three tackles for loss
His 47.6 Pro Football Focus pass rush grade was dead last among 69 edge rushers with at least 500 defensive snaps
Letting him go would create $9.5 million in cap savings
Another potential casualty of the 2024 Bengals' defensive debacle could be Sheldon Rankins. He just signed a two-year deal with Cincy last offseason, but he missed 10 games and was not particularly good in the seven he played. He earned a 46.2 run defense grade and a 58.9 pass rush grade from PFF and totaled just 18 tackles and one sack/TFL/QB hit -- which came against the league’s most easily sacked quarterback, Deshaun Watson
Cutting Rankins will save Cincinnati another $9.6 million against the cap as it seeks to fix that porous defense
EDITOR'S UPDATE: The Bengals released Sheldon Rankins on Feb. 21. They also announced on March 5 that Sam Hubbard is retiring from the NFL after seven seasons
After earning a Pro Bowl nod in each of his first eight full seasons in the NFL
Von Miller is very clearly in the sunset years of his career
He has had just 14 sacks in three seasons with the Bills
played roughly one-third of the defensive snaps in 2024 and turns 36 years old on March 26
While he can be a useful situational pass rusher
that kind of usage does not justify his $23.8 million cap number next season (10th-highest among NFL edge rushers)
Buffalo would eat $15.4 million in dead money by cutting him pre-June 1
so designating him as a post-June 1 cut might be more ideal -- with just $6.4 million in dead money and saving $17.4 million in that case
the Bills are currently projected to be $17 million over the cap (third-worst in the league)
so they need to pinch pennies wherever possible
and Miller seems likely to be among the casualties
he’s not worth the $24.1 million cap hit he brings in 2025
Cutting him will result in $13.7 million in dead money but will also bring $10.4 million in cap space for a franchise seeking a fresh start
EDITOR'S UPDATE: The Jaguars are trading Kirk to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick
NFL Network Tom Pelissero reported March 6
Alex Cappa has been a mainstay on the Cincinnati offensive line for three straight years
which ranks 64th out of 79 guards with at least 600 snaps in that window
The Bengals can save $8 million against the cap by cutting Cappa
EDITOR'S UPDATE: The Bengals released Alex Cappa on March 3
the Colts will need to decide whether to hold on to Ebukam entering a contract year with a $10.5 million cap hit
They could part ways for $7.5 million in cap savings or keep him for one more year while Paye and Latu continue to develop
If Indy believes Ebukam is worth keeping for 2025
it could pivot to Raekwon Davis as the top cut candidate
The defensive tackle signed with the Colts just last offseason (two years
had just 15 tackles and was generally worse across the board in 2024 than he had been in Miami prior
He nets $6.5 million in cap savings with an early release
which feels like a pretty easy call unless the Colts see him bouncing back significantly next year
EDITOR'S UPDATE: The Colts released Raekwon Davis on March 6
Braden Smith has been a Colt for seven seasons and started 92 of 94 games played since being drafted in 2018
He’s a solid rock on the right side of the offensive line ..
Smith has missed 12 games over the last two seasons and at least five contests in three of the last four campaigns
His $19.8 million cap hit in 2025 is top 10 at his position -- a fair price for his services
Indy will just need to decide whether his spotty availability is a concern at that price point
given a bottom-half-of-the-league cap situation and the mountain of work it'll need to do to compete in the AFC
Amani Hooker has been a regular piece of the Tennessee secondary
starting in all 27 games he has played the last two seasons (while missing seven with injury)
He even set career highs in 2024 with five interceptions
nine passes defensed and two forced fumbles
yet he finished with a 65.1 overall defensive grade
he carries an $11.3 million cap hit in 2025
$8.8 million of which Tennessee can save by releasing him before June 1
Hooker has the eighth-highest cap hit among safeties next year
he's not currently in the top 10 at his position
Tennessee Titans safety Amani Hooker snags New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye's deep launch to seal the game in overtime
but it might be winding to a close after a middling age-34 season in Houston
logged just three sacks and six QB hits (both his fewest since 2016) and carries a $10.3 million cap hit heading into 2025
Houston only saves $5.8 million by cutting him pre-June 1
so Autry would be better designated as a post-June 1 cut ($8.8 million in cap savings)
The veteran will likely be released either way
The Broncos are right in the middle of the league in cap space and have a promising quarterback (Bo Nix) on his rookie contract
if they want to make extra room -- perhaps to acquire some weaponry for Nix -- the first candidate for release would be John Franklin-Myers
Despite appearing in all 17 games (16 starts)
Franklin-Myers played just 46 percent of defensive snaps
He still managed seven sacks and 18 QB hits on those snaps
but he carries a $10 million cap hit in 2025 and can be released prior to June 1 for $7 million in savings
The Browns are in as bad a spot as it gets financially, currently projected to sit $31 million over the cap with a disastrous quarterback situation featuring Mr. Deshaun Watson
who carries a $73 million cap number (!) in 2025
Their most lucrative options for legitimate cap savings would be designating a couple of offensive linemen as post-June 1 cuts
they might have to look at Dalvin Tomlinson
who started 16 games in 2024 and was pretty solid from a production standpoint
which would result in $6.4 million in cap savings

With Purdy and Bosa out and left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) again listed as questionable
the 5-5 Niners could be without three of their most important players in a game they desperately need to stay in the postseason hunt
"But we've got a lot of good players out there
By no means do we not have a chance to win
We're going to fight our tails off and expect this to be a real good game."
While Bosa missing a game to recover has been a real possibility for the past two weeks
Purdy's absence grew into a reality over the past 24 hours
Purdy was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice
but Shanahan and the Niners said they believed his sore shoulder would continue to get better as the week went on
Purdy was on the field for some light throwing before Thursday's practice
but that clearly didn't go well as he retreated to the weight room for further treatment
The writing was on the wall earlier Friday when Purdy was nowhere to be found during the portion of practice open to media
"This is something that we didn't think would happen early in the week," Shanahan said
"We were fully preparing for Brock to go and got a little surprised about this yesterday."
Purdy had an MRI on the shoulder Monday and it did not show any structural damage that would offer cause for concern that he could miss extended time
But Shanahan also said he was unsure when Purdy will be back
"I don't want to say there's long-term concern," Shanahan said
and we really weren't concerned about [him] not being good this week
Shanahan said Purdy could not point to a specific play where he hurt the shoulder in last week's loss to the Seattle Seahawks
But Shanahan noted that Purdy's shoulder felt tight during the game and led to him spending more time warming in the game than he usually would
running the scout team against the defense for much of that time
Allen said he didn't know until Friday that he would be starting
based on the expectation that Purdy would feel better as the week went on
but I think our team -- all year long we have been dealing with injuries here and there
So it's definitely an opportunity for me to go out and play well and put our guys in a good position to win the game."
"We really weren't concerned about [Brock Purdy] not being good this week," coach Kyle Shanahan said
So we had to shut him down." David Gonzales/Imagn ImagesShanahan said that despite his injury
Purdy will travel with the team to Green Bay
Bosa has been dealing with injuries to both hips and obliques
though the left side has been more bothersome this week
Bosa played against Seattle despite pain in his right side but injured the left side with about nine minutes left in the third quarter
He did not return to the game and when it was over said he felt like he was "compensating" for the injury on the right side when he hurt the left
Bosa didn't sound optimistic Wednesday that he would be able to play against the Packers
"We were just happy to get him back in the building this week," Shanahan said
"We don't want to put any pressure on him by any means to get ready to play
he played last week against the Seahawks after not practicing all week
He could do it again this week after again sitting out all three days of practice
though this time the 49ers have a long flight to Green Bay added to the mix

At Joey Bosa’s introductory press conference with the Buffalo Bills
After signing a one-year, $12.6 million contract with Buffalo on Tuesday
Bosa told media members in attendance that he was looking for a shot at a championship
joining the team coming off a 32-29 loss in the AFC Championship Game led by a quarterback who refused to reset the market so his team could field a championship-caliber roster felt like the perfect fit
Bosa likened Buffalo to his days at Ohio State
getting excited about “a football town with an unbelievable fan base.” In 2014
Bosa was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and was one of 12 unanimous All-Americans the same season Ohio State secured a national championship
when asked about what brought him to Buffalo
“It’s been nine years (all spent with the Chargers)
which I’m really thankful for my career and how it’s played out
But I’m ready to experience something different
and I’m just excited to join a winning culture — football culture
The 29-year-old edge rusher already understands the stakes are high
something his new teammates have already established
Josh Allen reached out to him to let him know what kind of legacy this team is capable of leaving behind in Highmark Stadium before the team’s planned move in 2026
I think we have a chance to do something special,” Bosa said
“Josh texted me that if we do what we set out to do
we can really be immortalized in this town
That’s what it’s all about is winning — winning a championship
Bosa’s one-year contract in part comes from a decline in play over the last few seasons
He has not played a full season’s worth of games since 2021
appearing in just 28 games over the last three seasons
While Bosa made his first Pro Bowl since 2021 last year
his 5.0 sacks and 13 quarterback hits were both career lows in his seasons with at least 10 games played
Bosa chalked his recent performance dips up to battling through injuries
He missed three games early in the season with a glute injury
60 percent” for a good portion of the season upon his return from injury
I felt better than I’ve ever felt in nine years,” Bosa said
things didn’t work out the way I was hoping last year
and I’m proud of myself for the way I was able to battle back and push through some things
As the AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs unfolded in January
quarterback Patrick Mahomes was able to get the ball out quickly without much pressure applied to him
With the Bills depending on their four-man rush as much as they do as one of the lowest-volume blitzing teams in the league
getting improvements to their edge rusher group to help get to quarterbacks quicker will go a long way to their title hopes
Epenesa and the team’s other offseason defensive end signing
Bosa confirmed the expectation that he planned to be the starter for the Bills
The Bills used Epenesa on early downs in 2024 before ultimately subbing him off on most of their obvious pass-rushing downs
His pressure rate last season (5.8 percent) was the lowest of the defensive ends on the Bills last season
The Bosa addition will push Epenesa into a rotational role
but Bosa fondly discussed the idea of playing in a rotation to keep everyone fresh for both the most important parts of games
It remains to be seen how they’ll deploy the Bosa and Rousseau combination
as both have mostly been left side defensive ends over the last several years
those two will be on the field when games are on the line
Chargers outside linebacker Joey Bosa meets with the media to discuss if he envisioned the team heading to the playoffs
GM Joe Hortiz's biggest influence to the team
PALM BEACH, Florida – The Buffalo Bills wasted little time creating a health plan around newly signed edge rusher Joey Bosa
Bills coach Sean McDermott said he’s “excited to have Joey” and there is “the concern on the durability” during his media availability at the NFL owners’ meetings on Monday
Bosa, 29, may have returned to Pro Bowl form in his final season with the Los Angeles Chargers last year
playing in 14 of 17 games with five sacks and 13 tackles for loss
But he played in just 14 games total in 2022 and 2023
The Bills want to ensure Bosa is productive again in 2025
after he signed a one-year deal worth $12.6 million earlier this month to join quarterback Josh Allen and the reigning AFC East champions of the last five seasons
keep him healthy for us,” McDermott said of Bosa
McDermott said he sent messages to Buffalo’s personnel in the training room
the weight room and sports science department – one day after Bosa was signed – to coordinate on Bosa’s health
hamstring and toe injuries during the 2023 season
and a gluteal strain affected his sciatic nerve until he found his form toward the end of last season
“I sent a text – I think it was the day after we signed Joey – to our training room
and making sure we're getting out in front as much as we can on this,” McDermott said
“The communication with Joey and meeting Joey was phenomenal
He seems very open to some of the thoughts that are that those departments have already
we're looking forward to working together.”
Bosa will join the Bills for his 10th NFL season
3 pick and Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016
He was selected to the Pro Bowl five times during his stint with the Chargers
Bosa signed a five-year extension worth $135 million in 2020 that made him the league's highest-paid defensive player at the time
But the Chargers saved $25.36 million in cap space after releasing him earlier this month
Bosa’s 72 sacks ranked second behind Leslie O’Neal (105.5) in Chargers history
17 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 107 regular-season games
Another Pro Bowl-level player has hit the open market
The Los Angeles Chargers have released pass rusher Joey Bosa, the team announced Wednesday night
Bosa became one of the best Chargers pass rushers in franchise history
The third overall pick by the Chargers in 2016
87 tackles for loss and 17 forced fumbles in 107 career regular-season games over nine seasons
His 72 sacks in the regular season rank No
2 in team history and he tallied 50 career sacks faster than any Chargers player ever (67 games)
Bosa took a pay cut to remain with the Chargers last year
The Chargers saved $25.36 million against their cap by releasing Bosa
Bosa was considered a cut candidate by Los Angeles due to his $36.4 million cap hit in 2025
Bosa has battled injuries throughout his career
He’s only played in 14 or more games in a season four times
He was limited to 18 total starts the past three years due to various injuries
3 overall in the 2016 NFL draft and he won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in his inaugural season after posting 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss
He was the longest-tenured Chargers player
Bosa is still just 29 years old (he turns 30 in July)
he is expected to have plenty of suitors during free agency
Bosa’s younger brother, Nick, is a Pro Bowl pass rusher for the San Francisco 49ers

What the Chargers end up doing could totally hinge on what is available to them, too. They have to see what Khalil Mack does in free agency
Plus, they also have to see who offers what when the phone rings. For example, in a new trade idea from Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport
the Chargers ship Bosa to the Detroit Lions in exchange for a fourth-round pick:
“And the 29-year-old has played in more than 10 games just once in the past three years and hasn't had a 10-sack season since 2021
3 overall pick has been mentioned as a trade or even a cut candidate for much of the offseason—especially if the Chargers have aspirations of re-signing fellow edge-rusher Khalil Mack.”

Clearing $25 million in cap space and getting back a fourth-round pick isn’t all that bad for the Chargers
it would need to happen alongside Mack returning to pair with Tuli Tuipulotu as the defense’s primary pass rushers
But it’s certainly one way things could go – and bonus points if they ship him to an NFC team on the off chance he enjoys a major outburst in a new locale
The Chargers could always opt to re-work Bosa’s deal
provided he’s willing to do so again after last year’s pay cut
and the front office would be wise to strongly consider offers like this

In addition to the durability factor, it's telling that the Chargers decided to part ways with a former franchise player. While reportedly saving the team more than $25 million of salary cap space
