A link to give can be found linked here The Owensboro Times Features By Ryan Richardson After 18 years at the helm of Brescia University, Fr. Larry Hostetter has announced he will step down as president in 2025, opting not to extend his current contract. Madison Silvert, J.D., will succeed him, with a formal transition taking place in early 2025 and Silvert officially assuming the role on June 1. Hostetter said the decision to leave was carefully considered.  “It’s been 18 years as president and 26 years total that I’ve been at Brescia. I knew the time was winding down anyway, so I was trying to figure out when would be the right time,” he said. “As things unfolded, this turned out to be the best time. Rather than renewing the contract one more time, which I’ve done several times over those 18 years, I thought it might be best to just do something different.” The idea of Silvert as a potential successor began with Hostetter. “I knew that he was interested in higher education, and I basically called our board chair — the person who would be in charge of the search — and said, ‘Hey, here’s an opportunity the board may want to pursue,’ and left it at that,” Hostetter said. “Obviously, I wouldn’t have presented it if I didn’t think it was a good idea, but it was up to them to make that decision.” The board agreed. Rick Higdon, chair of the presidential selection committee, emphasized that Hostetter’s leadership created a strong foundation for the university’s future.  “We are so thankful for his leadership,” Higdon said. “He has put the university in a position to embark on a new century of growth and success that will be led by Silvert and the outstanding cabinet, faculty, and staff of this institution.” Silvert, an Owensboro native, is currently president of BryantCorp, managing hospitality and commercial real estate holdings nationwide. Previously, he led the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation, where he played a key role in revitalizing downtown Owensboro. Silvert also served as an adjunct professor at Brescia University, Kentucky Wesleyan College, and Owensboro Community and Technical College. Reflecting on the opportunity to lead Brescia, Silvert said, “Postsecondary education has always been a passion of mine. The opportunity to lead Brescia — a university that means so much to me in a community I love and am devoted to — was something that would have been hard to pass up.” Silvert underscored the importance of institutions such as Brescia to the local community.  “Owensboro’s success is absolutely dependent on the success of its postsecondary education institutions,” he said. “It’s a differentiator that makes this community successful.” Malcolm Bryant, co-founder and chair of BryantCorp, expressed pride in Silvert’s achievements and excitement for his new role.  “While we are saddened by his departure, we are also believers in Brescia and its ability to transform lives and Greater Owensboro,” Bryant said. “We are confident Madison will take Brescia to new heights, and we look forward to watching him share his magic in new ways.” Silvert said his first priority in the role will be listening to the needs of the university.  “My short-term goal is to do a lot of listening — to really understand the questions, concerns, and opportunities for the university. I’ll rely on the incredible team already in place to help guide that process,” he said. Hostetter expressed confidence in Silvert’s qualifications and vision.  Hostetter, who has spent nearly three decades at Brescia, described his own presidency as the greatest privilege of his life.  “It’s meant the world,” he said. “It’s been the greatest privilege of my life to serve the Brescia community — our students, faculty, and staff — and to carry on the Brescia mission, which we received from the Ursuline Sisters. I feel very strongly about the importance of Catholic higher education and how that’s framed within the Ursuline context.” For Hostetter, the highlight of his presidency has been seeing students achieve their goals.  “The highlight for me every year is graduation — seeing our students walk across the stage, having achieved their goals,” he said. “That’s what all of us at Brescia live for: helping our students achieve their educational goals. Beyond that, we strive to give them that extra something that comes with a Catholic, religiously affiliated university — the understanding that we’re all created to love and to make a difference in the world.” When asked about his future after leaving the presidency, Hostetter said his plans remain open.  “I’ve been an ordained priest for almost 38 years. I’ve only been full-time in a parish for three of those years—everything else has been in education in some form or another,” he said. “I’m hoping I’ll be able to teach a class or two here and there. I’d like to do that. Maybe parish ministry is what’s next. Some of that will depend on conversations I haven’t yet had with the Bishop of the Diocese.” Brescia University, founded in 1925 by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, is a Catholic liberal arts institution. Its mission remains rooted in providing education with a focus on service and community impact. As Brescia prepares for its next century, Silvert looks forward to honoring its mission and building on Hostetter’s legacy.  “I just want to express my gratitude to the board of trustees, the selection committee, and the faculty and staff for trusting me with this opportunity,” Silvert said. Hostetter, too, remains deeply committed to the university’s future, saying, “When I see our graduates and what they’re doing, how they’re making a difference, I can’t think of a better way to have spent the last 18 years of my life.” Privacy Policy Site by Tanner+West Austin Peay's basketball team returns home for the final time in 2024 for a 4 p.m. Sunday battle with Brescia in its nonconference finale on Gary Mathews Court at F&M Bank Arena – Austin Peay State University's basketball team returns home for the final time in 2024 for a 4 p.m. Austin Peay (4-8) looks to end a six-game losing streak against NAIA Brescia (2-7). Brescia University sustained significant damage in the early hours of Saturday morning as a powerful hailstorm swept through Owensboro. Several campus buildings were impacted, and while academic instruction will continue as planned Monday when students return from spring break, administrators said elements of student life will be disrupted in the days ahead. “It was hail primarily,” said Rev. Larry Hostetter, the university’s outgoing president. “If you look at some of our buildings, we’ve got a lot of siding damage, a few windows damaged. Some vehicles had their windows blown out. Our greenhouse was obliterated on top of the science building, which led to flooding in that area. The roof also had all sorts of damage.” Dean of Students Lori Etheridge echoed the damage report, particularly around the Moore Center and other student life facilities. “The roof sustained damage from the hail, and of course that caused some leaks,” Etheridge said. “But our classroom space is fine, and our residence halls actually fared pretty well — just a few broken windows we were able to address quickly.” Etheridge said while campus dining, the workout facility, the student center, and administrative offices were affected, Brescia is prepared to welcome students back for classes. “We’ll do what we need to do for our students,” she said. “There may be some disruptions to day-to-day life, and we’ll have to be flexible, but we’re fortunate it wasn’t worse.” Athletic teams are still able to practice in the gym, though the weight room is temporarily off-limits. A disaster response team is expected to be on-site Sunday to begin further assessment and cleanup.  The university is also working closely with insurance providers to evaluate the full extent of the damage and determine next steps. Anyone interested in offering help can visit Brescia.edu/give. “This is a challenge,” he said. “But we’ll get through it together.” Brescia University will kick off celebrations of its centennial year by honoring its Ursuline legacy with an event this afternoon. A program highlighting the school’s impact on countless lives will be followed by a reception and art gallery viewing of the Madonna Collection.  This event will start at 4 p.m., with the program in Duffy Auditorium located in the C.E. Field Center for Professional Studies. The reception and art gallery viewing will follow at 5 p.m. The program will include presentations from current students, Ursuline Sisters, an alumnus, current Brescia President Fr. Larry Hostetter, and incoming President Madison Silvert. Speakers will touch on the importance of the Ursuline legacy, and how their philosophies focused on teaching the whole person have shaped so many lives.  “This is Founder’s Week for us, and it’s such a beautiful way to begin the celebration of our Centennial year and all the ways the Ursulines have made an impact on our campus and community,” Hostetter said. “On Monday and throughout this year, we invite the community to join us in this celebration and to learn more about the role Brescia has played in Owensboro over these 100 years.”  The Mount Saint Joseph Junior College for Women was established in September 1925 by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph.  “After World War II, the need for co-educational extension courses in Owensboro was evident. At the bequest of city leaders, the Ursuline sisters were called to the creation of a second campus in downtown Owensboro, which they named Brescia College to honor the Italian roots of the Ursuline Sisters’ Order,” a release from the University reads.  The two campuses were consolidated on the present site in 1950. In 1998, the name was changed from Brescia College to Brescia University.  During the reception, attendees can view the Ursuline Sisters’ Madonna Collection, which are replicas of the Madonna that once hung in the original Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Mother Aloysius Willett, the first mother superior at Maple Mount, secured a Madonna replica painting each year during her leadership.  The paintings were displayed in a parlor in the Mount Saint Joseph Academy building where guests were welcomed. After the Academy closed and was converted into the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center, the room was rechristened as the Madonna Room, and the paintings were displayed. Since the retreat center was deconstructed in 2023, the paintings were in archives at Maple Mount and have been loaned to Brescia University for this showing.  Legacy Christian Academy basketball standout Cole Phillips signed his letter of intent to further pursue his athletic and academic dreams as a Bearcat at Brescia University this has been a long time coming,” Phillips said “I’ve had this relationship built with these guys for a couple years I’ve known Coach [Eli] Hayes since I was 12 so to actually get to this moment that very few actually get it’s special and I’m very excited to sign today and get to Brescia.” Phillips led his team to some of the highest points the program has ever seen including wins at the KCAA Tip-Off Tournament the KCAA Regional Tournament and ultimately capturing the Eagles’ first-ever KCAA State Tournament title In addition to making the KCAA All-State team which was another first for Legacy Christian basketball Phillips averaged 29.0 points per game (second in KCAA) 5.3 assists per game (tied for fourth in KCAA) and 4.9 steals per game (second in KCAA) Phillips scored over 1,000 career points as an Eagle and a few of his top performances put him into the LCA record books including most points in a single game (51) and most three-pointers in a single game (8) “ I think I just hope to leave behind a legacy of winning and that’s what this program’s about what we’ve turned it around,” Phillips said and they know the standard and they know how to get there I hope to leave behind a legacy of leadership and hard work and winning.”  Watch WNKY Live Game Recap: Men's Basketball | 12/14/2024 8:56:00 PM Thanks for visiting ! By Max Rayman Working under the interim tag since October, on Wednesday Brescia University’s Matt Karn was named the head coach of the men’s basketball team. “Matt is a great guy to work with. He is kind, intelligent, easygoing, and loves the game of basketball,” Brescia Sports Information Director Jaylin Tidwell said. “Karn wants to make the program better than how he came into it.” Shortly after trouncing Indiana University Columbus 107-68, Athletic Director, Mark Perdu made the announcement to Karn and his team in the locker room. “It was a pretty amazing day and a pretty amazing feeling to have that huge of a win and then get mobbed by all of the players,” Karn said. “They were so excited about removing the interim tag. It has been a whirlwind since then, even though we have to keep pushing on and finish out the season strong.” Earlier in the season, the Karn guided the Bearcats to a 79-76 win over Rio Grande, who at the time was ranked 25th in the nation – their first ranked win in eight seasons. On the cusp of a conference tournament appearance, Brescia is currently fourth in the west division of the River States Conference. An Ohio County alumnus, Karn rallied the Eagles to a 3rd region title in 2005 and was later named a junior college All-American. Afterward, he transferred and played three seasons at the University of Nebraska. He played professionally including a two-year stint with the Kentucky Mavericks in the Premier Basketball League before transitioning into coaching. Karn spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Brescia before leaving for the NBA in scouting, analytics, and player development. Now back in his stomping grounds, he wants to develop the local talent and use it to build his team’s foundation. “It was part of the reasons I moved back from Cleveland,” Karn said. “It was so exciting to return back because I had so many ties and local connections. I thought I could really build the program up if I was given the keys to it and now a lot of that has been freed up. I have played in the third region for Ohio County and in the state and I know how much Kentucky kids get overlooked. Those are the guys I want to build a program around.” Karn has built his current coaching staff around local ties. Assistant coach Trace Young played for Apollo High School before playing D1 and later in the Indiana Pacers organization. Karn has his eyes on a conference tournament appearance but also wants to create the culture and adding to the culture moving forward. “It’s about building the right culture, getting the right guys in here, and finding the right talent,” Karn said. “We need to develop these guys into young men and that teaches them discipline in how things should be in the classroom and on the court. That will help develop them as they get older.” Sports Apollo’s Landon Thompson has signed with Brescia University to continue his bowling and academic career. The senior is still in season with the Eagles and has been part of the program since arriving as a seventh grader. Originally Lindsey Wilson College was his number one option, but that changed once Brescia became an opportunity. During his tour, Brescia’s coach told him he believed in him – leaving a lasting impression. “It was a good fit for me,” Thompson said. “Better education and the bowling team stood out. Athletics were number one.” Thompson also heard from Northern Ohio and Indiana Weslyn, but staying in Kentucky was a top priority. “I didn’t want to go like eight hours away,” Thompson said. “I couldn’t do that.” Since early in his Apollo bowling career, Thompson realized he wanted to compete at the collegiate level and started to hone his craft. He focused on spare shooting and rolling one shot at a time. “When he came into the Apollo program, his style of bowling was from left to right and they changed that from right to left,” Thompson’s Dad, Chris Thompson said. “That was a totally different unique style for him.” Now that he is committed to Brescia, Thompson felt a huge cloud of pressure leave his shoulders – allowing him to focus on the rest of his senior season. Having made it to the state tournament in the past, he has his eyes on helping his team return. “I want to finish the season strong and get back to where I was last year,” Thompson said. “I was a little off this year because I was putting pressure on myself, and I am just hoping not to do that for the rest of the year.” While at school, Thompson plans to major in mathematics and minor in psychology.
