The best pair of woolen slippers I have ever owned come from a craft stand at the Christmas market in Bruneck (Brunico)
I was admiring their bright green wool and struck up a conversation with the keeper of the little wooden hut
and many more of the slippers at the stand
have a wonderful cork sole and a cute little edelweiss button
I loved them so much; I got a pair for all the folks on my shopping list
The beauty of this South-Tyrolean Christmas market is that it retains the original market vibe
Almost everything for sale is locally crafted
We visited the Bruneck Christmas Market on Dec
That morning my kids woke up to some treats in their newly cleaned shoes
a German tradition we have adopted in our family
Being in South Tyrol means straddling an area of Germanic heritage within the country of Italy
almost everything has two names: one in German and one in Italian
It can be a bit confusing until you understand that both languages are used throughout the region
When my family wandered downtown to the city park in Bruneck
would be parading through town the next day
He is accompanied by many painted demons and a fire show
Krampus is said to lock up the naughtiest among us
A nighttime visitation by hundreds of people dressed as Krampus is an alpine tradition
and one of the most popular times to visit
the Bruneck Christmas market is a calm outpost in a very sporty area
The small city is scenically nestled along the Rienz River at the base of the Kronplatz
a mountain region with all manner of skiing and winter sports options
The 13th-century Brunico Castle lords over the town and houses the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa where the connection between people and mountains is the focus
the Christmas market sprawls along the main road: the Via Bastioni
an area between the original city walls and gates
The town has an interesting medieval feel with alpine touches like Christmas trees decorating every light post
Since the thing that sets Bruneck’s market apart is the focus on locally made products
we made a point to seek out gifts in the Tyrolean tradition and made by regional artisans
socks and mittens made from local mountain sheep’s wool to woodworked items
One special item was the Bruneck “Duftstadel,” a unique pine oil scent created for the city by a local herbalist
It adds a wonderful mountainy fragrance when used in a diffuser
Just outside the westernmost city gate on the Via Centrale was another market area
A large wooden hall housed a special shopping area and exhibit of artisans working on products
crafting baskets and a massive antique weaving loom
Food specialties in Bruneck have a local mountain flare
hearty stew in a bread bowl was my favorite
or Vin Brulé and Ciccolata Caldo (hot chocolate)

Playback parent company Brunico Communications has merged the location of its Realscreen Summit and NATPE Global conferences for 2025
billed as the largest and most influential global unscripted industry gathering
and NATPE Global will co-locate at the InterContinental Miami hotel on the week of Feb
The decision was cited as a response to the market appetite for an all-encompassing event
Each event will retain its own distinct agenda and programs while providing attendees with the option to participate in both markets
The co-location is intended to provide ideal production and distribution dealmaking opportunities to attendees of both events while making attendance and exhibition more efficient
and allowing delegates to conduct a broader range of business in one trip
Realscreen Summit brings key unscripted producers and buyers from the development side of the business to NATPE Global
while NATPE brings significant breadth and strength across all genres as well as markets such as Latin America and Europe
The events will be co-led by NATPE executive director Claire Macdonald
who will helm the sales effort as SVP revenue for NATPE and Realscreen
while Realscreen EVP Mary Maddever will lead the content teams as executive content director for both events
The first NATPE/Realscreen collaboration will kick off in June at NATPE Budapest
with a Realscreen-branded format track as part of the agenda

we’re creating the most comprehensive North American-based content market available and an unbeatable value proposition.”
Added Maddever: “Realscreen is known for its unparalleled curated networking and pitch experiences
which align perfectly with NATPE’s focus on creating a vital cross-industry space for cultivating domestic and international business relationships.”
“Our stakeholders are looking for the most efficient and cost-effective way to conduct business,” said Macdonald
“This provides an exceptional forum to maximize commercial opportunities on both the finished sales and commissioning ends of the spectrum.”

Toronto-based B2B publishing and events producer Brunico Communications
the parent company of brands such as Playback
has acquired the assets of the National Association of Television Programming Executives (NATPE)
The sale includes the U.S.-based trade body’s international content markets, conferences and events NATPE Global, NATPE Budapest, NATPE Streaming+ and the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards, according to a news release issued by Brunico. The news comes a few months after NATPE announced plans to restructure and file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
The United States Bankruptcy Court has approved the acquisition
which is expected to close before the end of January
Brunico, which produces international events including the Banff World Media Festival (BANFF), Realscreen Summit and Kidscreen Summit, became the stalking-horse bidder for certain NATPE assets and the assumption of certain liabilities in November with an offer of US$150,000 (approximately C$200,000)
“Brunico holds a strong interest in NATPE because we feel we have the knowledge
and reach to grow and elevate this unique and storied brand,” said Brunico Communications president and CEO Russell Goldstein
“We also share so many of the same loyal customers that it seems like a natural extension of the business we are already doing across BANFF
We are very bullish on the future of NATPE.”
NATPE said it was filing for bankruptcy in October due to significant revenue loss from pandemic-related cancellations of its events
The global content association and professional membership organization is known for its large-scale TV trade shows and has a history spanning six decades
Brunico plans to launch “a full-scale return of NATPE’s annual slate of events,” starting with NATPE Budapest from June 26 to 28 at the Intercontinental Hotel
The company also “plans to invest significant resources in building the NATPE brand
in particular NATPE Global,” the flagship U.S.-based content marketplace set to unfold in early 2024
Goldstein said the company “will be reaching out to all NATPE partners in short order to discuss the transition and our plans for the future.”
He adds that the company is “expecting key members of the board of directors to play an important role in helping us plan for the future of NATPE
and Brunico is moving forward with this acquisition with its full support and backing.”
Brunico hopes to secure a venue for NATPE Global 2024 “as quickly as possible,” says Goldstein
adding that “Miami has always been a popular location for NATPE and its attendees
so we will be giving that strong consideration in our search.”
Goldstein touts NATPE as “one of the world’s largest and most important markets for content.”
“Firmly secured on the global TV calendar
it has always been a vital gathering of premium buyers and distributors from around the world looking to do business
“NATPE has a tremendous heritage that is recognized and respected globally
and discuss the most pressing issues confronting the industry
Pre-pandemic attendance has been reported at 3,500 delegates and we are very excited to welcome everyone back.”
said in a statement that they “could not be more pleased with this outcome,” adding that “with the board’s full support
Brunico is ideally positioned to elevate NATPE to new heights.”

ROME (AP) — A drunken driver speeding on a mountain road plowed into a group of young German tourists in northern Italy early Sunday
The deadly crash occurred in a village of Valle Aurina
northeast of Bolzano in the Alto Adige region
as the Germans gathered near their tour bus
The largely German-speaking autonomous region of northern Italy
with its ski resorts in the Dolomites and quaint villages around Bolzano
"The new year begins with a terrible tragedy," said the regional president of Alto Adige
The driver of the car had a high blood alcohol content and was driving particularly fast
a Carabineri police official in Brunico told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to give his name
He said police had concluded that the crash wasn't an act of terrorism
Italian news reports said the driver's blood alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit
and that he slammed into the tourists as they were getting off their bus and returning home after an evening out
“They were torn from their lives by the actions of someone speeding under the influence of alcohol,” said Armin Laschet
the German state that is home to most of the victims
The Lutago volunteer fire service said on Facebook that six people were killed at the scene
including two who were airlifted to a hospital in Innsbruck
identified by Italian media as a 28-year-old man from the nearby town of Chienes
was arrested on suspicion of highway manslaughter and injury and was being treated at the hospital in Brunico
Most of the victims hailed from western Germany
"These young people wanted to spend a good time together and were torn out of their lives or seriously injured from one second to the next," Laschet said
Laschet said the victims came from various cities
but not everyone knew each other,” he said
160 rescue workers and emergency medical personnel responded to the crash
which “looked like a battlefield," according to Helmut Abfalterer of the Lutago volunteer fire service
Mourners later left candles and flowers at the crash scene
which was located along a two-lane road dotted by hotels and piles of snow in the mountainous region
Kompatscher told a press conference the victims were part of a group of young Germans on vacation
He expressed his condolences to their families and declined to provide further details pending notification to their loved ones
The accident occurred on the final long weekend of the Christmas and New Year's holiday in Italy
which will be capped by Epiphany on Monday
BERLIN (AP) — A young German woman died in a hospital Monday
the seventh person killed after a drunken driver speeding on an Alpine road in northern Italy plowed into German skiers on vacation
The accident occurred early Sunday in the village of Valle Aurina
northeast of Bolzano in Italy's Alto Adige region
Germany's dpa news agency reported the woman was one of two who had been airlifted to a hospital in nearby Austria in critical condition
Italy's ANSA news agency identified her as a 21-year-old who died at the Innsbruck University Clinic
Police on Sunday said six people died at the scene and 11 were injured
There were no immediate details Monday on the conditions of the others
The 27-year-old local man who was driving the car was taken to an Italian hospital after the accident but was soon released and taken to prison
He faces a possible 18-year sentence if convicted
Italian news reports said the driver's blood alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit and that he slammed into the tourists as they were getting off their bus and returning home after an evening out
His attorney told dpa he did not think his client was so intoxicated

the chalet was designed with a symmetrical interior organization
which hitthaler respects — integrated into the structure at the front of the main room are two large beds on either side
while two smaller beds are situated on either side of the fireplace and the kitchen.
all images by harald wisthaler
in addition to restoring the woodwork and structure of the chalet, hitthaler increased thermal insulation and installed heating within the floors — the house now has an optimized living comfort and energy efficiency
the kitchen has become much brighter with the addition of windows into the side corners of the north facade
the house was further improved with the installation of a shower and toilet in the basement where daylight enters through a glass cube above the staircase
LED strips create an atmosphere which mimic that which lackner had initially created in the main room through the windows and the indirect lighting made by the sidelights.
the balcony of the chalet has been replaced by a light construction made of small beams in larch wood
diagonal steel beams fixed on the concrete pillars support this structure
this new solution offers twice as much space than before
access to the interior is given by a corten steel ladder which disappears into the left sidewall like a UFO ladder
the whole house seems to float above the ground which slopes to the south
an example of creative renewal which respects the original project

Metrics details
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome and at identifying its additional clinical features
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Within a prospective population-based survey examining 888 subjects aged 40–79 y
subjects were identified fulfilling the WHO and the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII) criteria for diagnosing the Metabolic Syndrome
In these subjects and in the rest of the sample (controls)
several metabolic and nonmetabolic biochemical parameters were compared
RESULTS: The prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome by WHO criteria was 34.1% (95% CI 31.0–37.2) and by NCEP-ATPIII criteria 17.8% (15.5–20.3)
The prevalence was significantly higher in older subjects and in those less physically active
Subjects with the Metabolic Syndrome either by WHO or by NCEP-ATPIII criteria showed higher levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein
gamma-GT and soluble endothelial adhesion molecules (E-selectin
vascular adhesion molecule-1 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1) and lower apolipoprotein A concentrations
as assessed by the Homeostasis Model Assessment
increased with the increase in the number of traits composing the syndrome found within the single individual
Subjects with insulin resistance had more pronounced abnormalities in several parameters
including the additional features of the syndrome (eg fibrinogen and soluble adhesion molecules)
CONCLUSIONS: The Metabolic Syndrome occurs very frequently in the general population aged 40–79 y
and is associated with several additional metabolic and nonmetabolic abnormalities that likely contribute to an increased cardiovascular risk
Insulin resistance seems to play a major role in classic and additional abnormalities featuring the Metabolic Syndrome

Italian architects Anton Pramstrahler and Alex Niederkofler plan to construct a "Lookout Tower" in a woodland near the town of Bruneck, Italy
the twisting structure will provide a scenic space for respite and contemplation while blending into the surrounding growth with a fanned façade that mirrors the trees’ roots and canopies
Generated by the parameters of the golden ratio and using only linear structural elements, the Lookout Tower’s winding form is the result of systematic shifts every two meters in the angles of wooden structural members along the outer façade.

Image © Anton Pramstrahler and Alex NiederkoflerIn order to maximize framed views of the forest from within, the structure relies on hexagonal floor plates that vary in size and angle as occupants move vertically. These are connected by a continuous internal staircase and serve as punctuated platforms for resting and viewing the forest from shifting standpoints.
At the wide “roots” of the tower, the façade peels away to reveal a welcoming entrance for visitors. As they reach the “canopy” at the top, they are greeted with a gathering area revealing a panoramic view of the valley and forest.

there will be no trains in the entire Pusteria/Pustertal valley all day
Train services between Brunico/Bruneck and San Candido/Innichen will remain suspended until 4 November
Due to a series of extensive construction and maintenance works
there will be lengthy interruptions to rail traffic in the Pusteria/Pustertal valley over the course of the coming days
the entire train line between Fortezza/Franzensfeste and San Candido/Innichen will be closed
Train services between San Candido/Innichen and the border will be suspended from 9 in the morning until 12 noon
Eastern Pusteria/Pustertal valley: tracks closed until 4 November
The section between Brunico/Bruneck and San Candido/Innichen will remain closed from Monday 31 October to Friday 4 November in order to complete the construction works on the railway bridge at Valdaora di Sopra/Oberolang
a landslide had washed out the railway line
the damaged area was repaired provisionally
Now it will be permanently secured with a bridge-supporting structure
the tracks between Brunico/Bruneck and San Candido/Innichen will have to remain closed for several days
after consulting with the infrastructure manager RFI
Rail replacement services: Replacement buses will run every half hour on weekdays and every hour on Sundays and public holidays
In cooperation with the rail network operator RFI
STA – Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige SpA/ Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG – will use the days during which the track are closed to carry out urgent repair and maintenance work at a number of stations: In San Lorenzo/St
and in the latter the platform will also be repaired
which was damaged during storms last August
"Transfer made easy" is the motto of a new project to completely restructure the Brunico/Bruneck train station forecourt
The redevelopment includes new parking spaces
plenty of parking for bicycles and an extended pedestrian subway to the platforms
Jointly owned by the city of Brunico/Bruneck and STA (Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG/Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige SpA)
With the contract between STA and the building firm now signed
the first construction phase is ready to be launched and will see the development of 230 car parking spaces and a whole new bus terminal modelled on the one in Bolzano/Bozen
Brunico/Bruneck station and its forecourt make up the number one mobility hub in the Pusteria/Pustertal valley: On school days
some 3,000 people board a train or bus here
That's reason enough to upgrade this neuralgic point of public transport
structure it more clearly and equip it to meet the requirements of flexible and sustainable mobility
trains running along the Pusteria/Pustertal valley have seen the largest increase in rail passengers in all of South Tyrol
Train journeys on this railway line have almost tripled in the last 10 years and now amount to more than 2 million annually
With up to 50,000 ticket check-ins per month or an average of 1,700 per day
Brunico/Bruneck train station ranks fourth in terms of passenger numbers after Bolzano/Bozen
The station square is also the key point of intersection for several very popular bus routes
including line 450 to and from the Aurina/Ahrntal valley – which
with almost 1.8 million ticket check-ins per year
is the most frequently used regional bus in all of South Tyrol
While the construction works are under way
the bus stops outside the railway station will temporarily move to new locations that may change as the works progress
Maps explaining how to locate your bus stop can be found all around the construction site and at the provisional stops themselves
From Saturday 30 October until the end of Saturday 06 November
the tracks between San Candido/Innichen and Brunico/Bruneck will remain closed: All trains will be suspended and rail replacement services will be provided
individual trains running between Brunico/Bruneck and Fortezza/Franzensfeste will also be cancelled and replaced by bus services
Please note that it is not possible to transport bicycles on replacement buses
New route for replacement buses: In Brunico/Bruneck
rail replacement buses will stop only outside the train station (Via Marconi/Marconistraße) and Tschurtschenthaler park
with services taking the new exit Brunico Centro/Bruneck Mitte and running along Via Riscone/Reischacher Straße
This is to shorten the journey and ensure that passengers make their connection
is preparatory work for the construction of a new bridge near Valdaora/Olang
which is scheduled to be completed next year
To reduce the inconvenience for passengers as much as possible
the works will be carried out during the first week of November
the company operating the railway network serving the Pusteria/Pustertal valley will carry out a series of inspection and maintenance works at regular intervals along the tracks
all trains between San Candido/Innichen and Fortezza/Franzensfeste will be suspended and replaced by bus services
Replacement services Pusteria/Pustertal valley
Between San Candido/Innichen and Sillian (A)
train services will be suspended on Sunday morning between 9:00 and 12:00
Extended track construction works at Thal in Osttirol train station (A) will see rail services between San Candido/Innichen and Lienz (A) suspended from 07 to most likely 15 November 2021
Replacement services San Candido/Innichen - Lienz (A)
has been an international tourist destination since the beginning of the 1900s
This town is home to the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme
an institution that has been managing the valley’s woods and pastures since 1111
Cavalese is home to many Nordic skiing competitions
the finish line of the Marcialonga and the Alpe Cermis Ski Area
The town of Bruneck/Brunico is the geographical
and economic center of the Pustertal Valley/Val Pusteria
Bruneck/Brunico is a magnet for visitors of all ages
Bruneck/Brunico is located at 836 m (2,740 ft.) above sea level
in the heart of a wide valley basin surrounded by tall mountains
The medieval town is bordered to the north by the Ahrntal Valley/Valle Aurina and the glaciers of the Zillertal Alps
and to the south by the Gadertal/Val Badia and the peaks of the Dolomites
Another uphill start awaits the riders in the last stage: 11 km of regular but not to be underestimated ascent from Cavalese to the Lavazè Pass
the highest peak (1808 m asl) of the entire race
This is followed by a fast and very long descent towards South Tyrol
with two long tunnels just before rejoining the flat and the bottom of the valley
The route follows the wide state road up the Eisacktal/Valle Isarco and then into the Pustertal/Val Pusteria
alternating flat stretches with slightly uphill segments
the ascent becomes steeper for a couple of kilometres as it climbs towards Pfalzen/Falzes
then quickly descends towards Bruneck/Brunico
centred on the Mühlbach/Riomolino climb: the complete slope has an average gradient of 8.2%
there will still be 19 km to the finish: five of ups and downs at high altitude
six mostly flat around Bruneck/Brunico before reaching the finish line again on the main Bastion road
at the end of a long straight stretch with a slight but steady climb
The car parking spaces at the train stations of Bressanone/Brixen and Brunico/Bruneck will be subject to a charge in future: Bressanone/Brixen from 1 July
Brunico/Bruneck from 1 September 2022. The good news: Südtirol Pass holders commuting by train can park free of charge
At the new Mobility Centres in Bressanone/Brixen and Brunico/Bruneck
parking was designed with a prime focus on train passengers – and on providing the most favourable conditions possible for commuters in particular
the following discounts will apply to all Südtirol Pass holders: If you park your vehicle at either of those stations and take a regional train from there
you can park for only a small fee – and if you return to that station on a regional train that same day
The system also works for commuters who park their car at the car park every day exclusively during the night hours
The prerequisite for free parking in this case is that both validations (for the outward and return journey) are made within 24 hours after the first entry into the car park
you can conveniently use your Südtirol Pass to pay and to open the barrier when entering and leaving the station: Simply hold your ticket in front of the reader
Parking fees: rules for Südtirol Pass holders
The idea is simple: For Südtirol Pass holders
parking costs a maximum of 6 EUR per day
If you use your Südtirol Pass to check in on a regional train that day
And if you use your Südtirol Pass to pay for a return journey on a regional train that same day
Südtirol Pass holders are guaranteed to always pay the lowest possible rate; for shorter parking times
that can also mean the standard hourly rate

Rail replacement services: Throughout all of Saturday and Sunday
replacement buses will leave on an hourly basis:
They will call at most stations – with the following exceptions:
Since the duration of each journey will depend on traffic
replacement services will also run between San Candido/Innichen and Sillian (A) on an hourly basis
Due to track works between Brennero/Brenner and Colle Isarco/Gossensass
