For thousands of years, humans across the world have played music using some version of the ocarina, a rounded wind instrument that produces a flute-like sound. In ancient China, ocarina-like instruments date back to 5,000 BC, and the Maya and the Aztecs used them in religious ceremonies
But the modern ocarina, a sweet potato–shaped instrument with 10 to 12 holes, was invented, by mistake, in the small Italian town of Budrio
that same town is host to the world’s largest ocarina festival
“Donati used to play the clarinet in the town’s band,” says Christian Paolini
a tour guide at Budrio’s Ocarina Museum
”He used to make make-shift instruments for his bandmates.” For one of his experiments
Donati set out to craft a whistle with a rounded base and a curved bell
he accidentally cracked the “neck” of the bell
“He tried playing the bottom part of the instrument and realized that it produced an interesting sound,” Paolini says
In the years that followed his accidental invention
Donati perfected the design of the instrument
“small goose” in the local dialect
He devised a set of five ocarinas that produced a range of low-pitched to high-pitched notes
Donati and his fellow musicians formed Budrio’s first ocarina quintet
“Donati’s idea of creating a set of five ocarinas dramatically expanded the instrument’s musical reach,” Paolini says
“The quintet could play quite a diverse range of music
from folk songs to opera themes.” Over the years
the group added two more ocarinas and the quintet became a septet
In 1869, Budrio’s ocarina players performed at a theater in Bologna
The septet played a selection of themes from some of the most famous operas of the time
from Verdi’s La Traviata to Rossini’s The Barber of Seville
“The public loved it,” Paolini says
“The theater manager was so impressed that booked them again.” Word about this unusual music based on a “humble” instrument from Budrio got around
the band was playing under the stage name the Montagnards des Appenines
the “mountain people from the Apennines,” and wearing traditional shepherd costumes to perform
“Imagine seeing a group of seven men dressed like shepherds
playing opera themes with clay instruments
inside one of London’s most up-and-coming theatres,” Paolini says
“That must have been quite a scene.”
also played a role in the ocarina’s unexpected success
a member of Budrio’s original ocarina quintet
invented the first metal molds for ocarinas
producing instruments with a bright and clear sound
“He was considered the Stradivari of ocarinas,” Paolini explains
exported Budrio’s “little goose” beyond Italy
Ercole opened an ocarina workshop in Paris in 1877
winning medals for his innovative designs at the 1878 and 1900 World Expositions
His brother Alberto moved to London in 1879 and became a music teacher and editor of exercise books for ocarina students
“The story of the ocarina is the story of how Budrio gets on the world’s map,” Paolini says
Ocarinas designed and crafted by generations of Budriesi are now kept in the town’s two-story Ocarina Museum
One exhibit is dedicated to the local craftsmen who have innovated on Donati’s invention
who crafts ocarinas by hand in his workshop in Budrio
the “head” and the body” of the ocarina
and adds holes in the side of the ocarina using the tip of a drill
Menaglio leaves the ocarinas to air-dry on a wooden shelf
so making sure to account for that while modeling the clay is a vital part of the process
Menaglio calls himself a “craftsman of sound.” Each step of the ocarina-making process can affect how the instrument sounds
Small and elongated bodies make higher-pitched sounds
while larger and thicker ones emit lower-pitched sounds
Even when making ocarinas of the same variety
small differences in the inner volume of the body can produce different sounds
“We still make each instrument by hand
so naturally they are not exactly the same,” he explains
“My job is to make them as consistent as possible so that musicians can harmonize their sound more easily.” According to Paolini
Menaglio has gained a reputation as an “ocarina wizard” for the consistency of his instruments
Budrio also produces people who love to play them
the town still boasts a touring ocarina orchestra
they’ll spend weeks together practicing their harmonies
“That’s what I love the most about playing the ocarina,” says Leonardo Carbone
“It takes a lot of practice to reach a harmonized sound
but when you do it’s magical.”
Budrio’s ocarina septet has ventured beyond Europe
Part of the band’s success in East Asia goes back to the long-standing tradition of ocarina-like instruments in those countries
“If you listen to a concert by the GOB
it has a similar sound to traditional Taoist music,” Paolini says
But some of their appeal is a more recent phenomenon
says that the band first went to South Korea in 2010 for a concert
ocarinas were gaining traction in the country
transitioning from little-known instruments to a popular way to teach music in schools
The group was approached by local businessmen who loved their music so much that they offered to sponsor a national tour
The band’s entry into Japan followed a similar trajectory
“We were scouted by a PR firm that wanted to promote our music,” Bernagozzi says
“Now our performances at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre are always sold out.”
In recent years, the ocarina has also become a well-known instrument in North America. Many people in the gaming community discovered the instrument thanks to the 1998 video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, where the player can solve puzzles by playing an ocarina. The US now has its first ocarina septet, Ocabanda
that performs traditional ocarina pieces as well as anime and video game themes

video: TWIN is the name of the new robotic exoskeleton for lower limbs
designed and developed by Rehab Technologies IIT – INAIL
the joint laboratory between the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and the Prosthetic Center of INAIL, which will allow patients to wear it more easily
Credit: IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia
23 February 2024 – TWIN is the name of the new robotic exoskeleton for lower limbs
the joint laboratory between the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT-Italian Institute of Technology) and the Prosthetic Center of INAIL (the prosthetic unit of the National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work)
which will allow patients to wear it more easily
Presented today in Milan during a press conference held at the Museum of Science and Technology
TWIN was demonstrated by two patients who were involved in testing the system during its development
but researchers hope to bring it to industrialization soon
The exoskeleton TWIN originates from the IIT’s Rehab Technologies Lab, which is the joint laboratory between the IIT in Genoa and the Prosthetic Center of INAIL in Budrio (Bologna)
The collaboration began at the end of 2013 with the goal of developing innovative
cost-effective solutions for patients with physical impairments
One of the patients who wore TWIN today is Alex Santucci
who accompanied technicians and researchers throughout the entire design period of the device
participating in clinical experimentations as a tester
The clinical experiments took place not only at the Prosthetic Center of INAIL in Vigorso di Budrio but also at the Montecatone Rehabilitation Institute in Imola and at Villa Beretta in Costa Masnaga (LC)
The motorized exoskeleton TWIN is an external structure capable of enhancing the physical abilities of the wearer
It has been designed to allow individuals with reduced or even absent motor abilities in the lower limbs
such as in cases of complete spinal cord injuries
walk with the assistance of crutches or walkers (as the exoskeleton is not self-balancing)
Two features make TWIN unique in the world: it is made of lightweight materials
the structure is adjustable based on the patient's physical characteristics through telescopic links placed at the level of the femur and tibia
Ankles and foot support are available in various sizes to adapt to the ergonomics of the user
TWIN's operating modes are also adaptable to the patient
evaluating the degree of motor deficit of the person wearing it
particularly their ability to perform autonomous walking
using a specific Android application installed on the provided tablet
The graphical interface allows for controlling the exoskeleton in the execution of various programmed activities
setting the kinematic parameters of movement
and choosing between different step execution modes
The exoskeleton works in three operating modes: 'Walk mode'
designed for patients with absent motor function
in which the exoskeleton imposes a walking pattern according to programmed parameters; 'Retrain mode'
used for patients with partial impairment of lower limb motor function
capable of performing a more or less autonomous movement but with difficulty in some phases of the step - in this case
the exoskeleton supports the patient's movement with more or less intensity
directing them towards an optimal reference trajectory; 'TwinCare mode'
designed for patients with partial and differentiated motor impairment between the two limbs
where one leg is healthy and can move autonomously
The TWIN motors activate the knee and hip joints
imposing a completely configurable movement pattern on the patient's limbs
The battery has a lifespan of approximately four hours and requires an hour to recharge
In addition to rehabilitation clinics during physiotherapy sessions
as assuming the upright position brings significant benefits in terms of musculoskeletal
and digestive system functionality for wheelchair users
which will occur in partnership with an industrial partner
reintegrating severely injured workers into social and work environments

Wildlife conservation gets the most attention when it’s focused on the big and exciting—polar bears
and ensuring they can survive and thrive requires a massive effort
But nature and wilderness and loss don’t just exist on that scale
Take a cave in northern Italy called Bùs del Budrio
one among many worn out of the limestone in the foothills of the Alps
and below that a pool about the size of a one-car garage
white freshwater worms thought to exist nowhere else in the world
And then no one thought about them at all for eight decades or so
biologists from the University of Milan came across what looked to be another unique planarian species in another cave
They wondered how these new flatworms compare to the only other described species in northern Italy
So they made their way to Bùs del Budrio
“The original description of the cave mentioned a pool
but it wasn’t there,” says Raoul Manenti
A concrete barrier was diverting the water that once filled the pool
and the waterfall was reduced to trickle that fed a narrow rivulet on the cave floor
The research team scoured the water for signs of the white flatworms
which had been largely forgotten since their discovery eight decades earlier
as conditions were far from ideal—planarians prefer still water
and the rivulet was turbulent and contained little food
the team counted between eight and 109 individuals
It’s amazing that they weren’t yet gone
but Manenti was keenly aware that it wouldn’t take much for the only known population of the worms to vanish for good
And it wouldn’t just be the loss of an odd white worm—in the nutrient-starved cave environment
“These planarians are at the top of the small trophic web of the cave water … they likely play an important role in regulating the other aquatic invertebrate fauna of the cave,” he says
not only to save a species and its ecosystem
but also to return the cave to its natural condition—a feat in its own right
Manenti orchestrated what he believes was the first-ever habitat restoration project designed specifically to save a worm
the team needed the appropriate permissions
Since the cave is located in the Cariadeghe Plateau
Manenti sought approval from area’s administrators to restore it
The idea of outsiders coming in and tinkering with their cave was initially met with suspicion
Manenti organized a series of cave tours in which his team educated them on the unique species within
“We really focused on the fact that this worm is their worm because it’s endemic,” he says
They also piggy-backed on popular excursions to the bùs del lat
which roughly translates to “milk holes”—small caves in the region historically used for milk storage and cheese processing
he was no longer reliant on the water to irrigate his land
The cave was as a kind of institution for his family—for generations
his ancestors had taken advantage of its low temperatures to store ice for use in the warmer months
Bodei found returning it to its natural condition an appealing prospect; his family mused about running tour groups between the cave and their farm
perhaps selling some of their produce in the bargain
With all of the permissions and approvals out of the way—which took around six months in total—on December 4
The team carefully drew 73 planarians out of the rivulet with pipettes and temporarily housed them in tanks
Local cavers assisted in taking down the concrete barrier
so we had to climb it,” says Manenti
very difficult to remove.” Despite the physical challenge
the worms were again swimming around in their original habitat
“It’s a pretty remarkable achievement,” says Pedro Cardoso, an entomologist and curator at the Finnish Museum of Natural History in Helsinki, “to have gotten all of these stakeholders involved and [performed] all of these conservation actions for a planarian.” In a 2011 paper
Cardoso pinpointed a general disregard for invertebrates as a major stumbling block to their conservation
Had the team been working to conserve a big
say—the public might have been keen to support the project from the get-go
executive director of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in Portland
“We tend to see mammals in a better light than invertebrates because they look like us,” he says
while creatures such as planarians are more alien
“The neat thing about this [project] is that they were able to get the community on board—it just took that special effort.”
Manenti and his team have made regular visits to the cave since its restoration to see how the flatworms are doing. A year later, there hadn’t been any notable surge in their numbers, they reported recently in the journal Oryx
baby planarians are so small that they’re nearly impossible to detect
Manenti plans to keep returning the cave to keep tabs on the population’s growth
success isn’t only measured in numbers
“Just the fact that it was possible to work with this many people
and that the local community now has knowledge of this unique species,” says Cardoso
“it’s really a victory for the project
irrespective of what happens with the population.”
there’s something comforting in knowing that this unique species is back where it belongs

with an excerpt of eighty-five pieces belonging to that collection from the Emilian area and dated between the late 15th century and the 18th century
stands out as a unicum on a private but also national level
Displayed for the first time to the general public in the exhibition La Quadreria del castello (Bologna
curated by Angelo Mazza and presented by Genus Bononiae - Musei nella città)
it unfolds through the rooms of the precious Renaissance Palazzo Fava
defined by Roberto Longhi as “a historical novel imagined on the great earlier painting
capable of transcending the pockets of mannerism and communicating directly at the opening not of a book
but of a window.” The copious and passionate collection of the Bergamasque entrepreneur and president of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna
housed in the rooms of his residence (since 1995) located in the Castle of San Martino in Soverzano
founded by the Ariosti family during the 14th century
consists of 530 works purchased from Italian
European and American antique galleries and auctions. The collection
which began about forty years ago with a Portrait of a Man belonging to the Carracci circle purchased by restorer Maricetta Parlatore
was immediately enriched with small masterpieces including a very delicate Penitent Magdalene with angel holding the crown of thorns by Marcantonio Franceschini
the first and only painting to adorn the castle walls on the day of its inauguration
and Salome with the head of Baptist by Pietro Ricchi
which sanctioned his meeting with art historian Angelo Mazza
Poletti’s personal picture gallery would prove fundamental in his training and development
As fundamental will be the advice that will accompany him in the years to follow
dispensed by Parlatore herself when he was just 27 years old: “go to the Pinacoteca
there you will find the beautiful; look at the light
but above all let yourself be penetrated by the message that the artist has imprinted there.”
The collection has the merit of having also given voice to some lesser-known painters protected by the Superintendency who are talented and of character
enhanced undervalued paintings ousted from the market and from major exhibitions
The latter aspect has allowed some dismembered or dispersed works to be reassembled; emblematic is the oil on canvas depicting the Fainting of Portia assisted by ahandmaiden by Lorenzo Pasinelli
which appears to have been cut into three parts in 1669 by an unhappy Count Fava who had been waiting for it to be finished
and which returns to be joined by the two recently identified minor fragments that originally composed it
namely the Bust of a Handmaid and the Bust of a Soldier
The Quadreria conserves within it some works subject to ministerial constraint such as the lunette depicting the Eternal Blessing Father with cherubs by Marco Palmezzano
the panel with the Presentation of the Child in the Temple by Antonio Pirri
and Bartolomeo Cesi’s canvas with Hannibal as a boy swears eternal hatred against the Romans from the senatorial Palazzo Albergati on Via Saragozza and where the content message is founded with high figurative virtuosity
which limits the owner in the exercise of the right of ownership by preventing their export and making him responsible for their good preservation
did not restrain Michelangelo Poletti from acquiring them but on the contrary seems to have spurred him on
Another noteworthy aspect that characterizes this collection is that of having brought paintings back to Italy through international auctions: examples include Camillo Procaccini ’s Sacrifice of Isaac and Elisabetta Sirani ’s Portrait of a Child with Vase of Flowers
both acquired at a Sotheby’s auction in London
and Donato Creti ’s Head of a Soldier with Helmet and Command Staff
which was hammered out at the Dorotheum auction house in Vienna
While boasting an enviable corpus of pieces predominantly from the Emilia-Romagna area dating from the late fifteenth to the early nineteenth century
Michelangelo Poletti’s picture gallery counts within it works (in almost all of cases of certain historical traceability) executed by painters from the Veneto
so-called “itinerant ”and belonging to religious orders
Within theEmilia-Romagna area there is a conspicuous presence of works executed by artists assiduous frequenters of the Carracci school
in turn collected by Count Alessandro Fava
and Aureliano Milani (Giulio Cesare Malvasia recounts that the count had the hall frescoed by the Carracci arranged “a comfortable movable bridge
corresponding to such courteous magnificence
Among these paintings are the Sleeping Cupid disarmed by the nymphs
remembered by Giampietro Zanotti as “one of the most beautiful that can come out of any great painter,” and Rebecca at the well
quenching Elezer’s thirst (dated 1665)
who founded a school in Palazzo Fava between 1674 and 1675
an oil on canvas dated 1690 by the barely 19-year-old pupil Donato Creti with a dedication to his patron Alessandro Fava; and the Bacco
a rare terracotta sculpture made by Donato Creti and signed with his initials
Within the collection there is no shortage of some of what can be considered key female figures in the history of Bolognese art
Lavinia Fontana (daughter of the famous Prospero Fontana
much sought after by all those important people who aspired to have a portrait that would emphasize their social and professional position)
in addition to the aforementioned Child Portrait
also with an intense Allegorical Figure of Philosophy executed at a young age and inspired by Petrarchan verses
A very interesting piece from an art-historical point of view
pursued for a long time by Poletti before he succeeded in acquiring it
is the large altarpiece of the Madonna and Child Enthroned and Saints Peter
Francis d’Assissi and Anthony of Padua from the 15th century attributed to the Forlì Maestro dei Baldraccani (active in the years of Melozzo and Caterina Sforza)
mentioned in a famous article by Federico Zeri that appeared in Paragone magazine in 1986 in which the scholar claimed to have studied it before 1973 in the Muti-Bussi house in Rome
A painting with a powerful compositional flair that is influenced by Flemish influences perhaps not direct but filtered through Tuscan artists such as Ghirlandaio and Piero di Cosimo
it features a Madonna seated on a highly inventive throne adorned with capitals carved with allegorical figures and placed atop a double decorated step
flanked in the foreground by Saints Peter and Paul and two Franciscan saints in the background (one of whom is most likely identifiable as St
Francis) and therefore probably from a church belonging to that order
In the sphere of the Bolognese sixteenth century
the collection gathers works by Camillo Procaccini
a painter from Antwerp who settled in Bologna
surmounted by the golden triangular nimbus symbolizing the Trinitarian mystery
in which it is impossible not to discern the Michelangelo component
most likely to be attributed to a pupil of Raphael’s school
Giovan Francesco Penni known as il Fattore
Among seventeenth- and eighteenth-century painters
the Quadreria includes works by Giovanni Andrea Donducci known as il Mastelletta (of whom we mention two works whose composition is of great narrative-theatrical impact: Christ and theAdulteress
a sketch for a three-meter painting owned by Giustiniani
which is influenced by the school of Guido Reni)
Giovanni Andrea Sirani and Simone Cantarini (intense his unfinished Philosopher with Compass
reworked during the 19th century) and by Francesco Monti
Ubaldo and Gaetano Gandolfi (belonging to the Bolognese barocchetto)
as well as of Giovanni Maria Viani and son
Carlo Cignani and his pupil Marcantonio Franceschini
Some of these would be the protagonists of the nascent Accademia Clementina of Bologna supported by Pope Clement XI
would be among its founders and who would elect Palazzo Fava as the seat of the first organizational meetings
Dating from 1769 is Jacopo Alessandro Calvi ’s preparatory model (recently donated to the Fondazione Carisbo) of the work San Francesco implores the Madonna’s protection over pilgrims, installed at the church of Santa Maria della Vita next to the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Niccolò dell’Arca
which stood at the beginning of Via San Felice
while the model Isabella of Aragon pleads for protection to Charles VIII on a visit to the dying duke
is placed at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
Figurative examples from the Veneto area include Moses Making the Waters Spring by Pietro de Marascalchi known as lo Spada
a mannerist active in Belluno; the Visitation by Antonio Bellucci
a model for the altarpiece in the Salesian church in Vienna; and a pair of ovals attributed to the Frenchman Louis Dorigny active mainly in Verona (theAllegory of Right Judgment and theAllegory of Concord) placed in the ballroom of the Cà Tron in Venice
Belonging to theLombard area we point out some works such as theAdoration of the Shepherds in the Presence of St
one of the greatest exponents of Lombard Baroque
Agnes and a Charity by Giulio Cesare Procaccini; while among the Tuscans we mention theAllegory of Prudence and Justice
a Crucifixion and a Resurrection by Francesco Conti
and the panel with Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Raffaellino del Colle
Notable among the Genoese are the six imposing canvases by Antonio Lagorio known as the Genovesino (the same nickname as the better-known Luigi Miradori) from Palazzo Grassi
whose style mixes that of Valerio Castello’s revisited Baroque staff with the late Mannerism of Parmigianino
Among the Neapolitans are Nunzio Rossi’s canvas with Saint Cecilia
the Portrait of Diego Pignattelli d’Aragona conceived on the occasion of his elevation to the Order of the Golden Fleece and flanked by an African servant (modeled after Van Dyck) by Francesco Solimena whose model is housed in the Metropolitan Museum in New York
Among those itinerant, non-stable painters, Johannes Hispanus with the Deposition of the Body of Christ in the Sepulcher and Saints (an artist long studied by Federico Zeri
with multiple pictorial influences ranging from Perugino to Pinturicchio
Dosso Dossi to Amico Aspertini) and Filippo da Verona with the Madonna and Child in Landscape stand out
Painters belonging to religious orders include the Capuchin Paolo Piazza with a Presentation of the Child in the Temple
Fra’ Semplice da Verona with the Madonna and Child and Saint Felice of Cantalice
and Sister Orsola Maddalena Caccia (who distinguished herself by a considerable production of altarpieces and still lifes) with a Concert of Five Angels
Concluding the Michelangelo Poletti collection: an artist of the 20th century
Fioresi and Pizzirani of the so-called “Moderate Bolognese avant-garde ”and present with works
whose favorite subject is daily life and the female figure and ranging from the charcoals of the Academy period
oils up to abstract collages and new experiments
A communiqué from the archdiocese of Bologna (Italy) denies that the mass in Budrio on 11 June was to bless a gay couple
And the Daily Compass also reveals the content of the wedding invitation sent via WhatsApp by one of the 'spouses'
The diocese's document also falsifies a 1986 document by Ratzinger in order to show that it is in tune: but that document said exactly the opposite
it is in fact a clear condemnation of Cardinal Zuppi's pastoral work
- VIDEO: DEAR CARDINAL ZUPPI....
The diocese's communiqué says: there was no blessing
even though a same-sex couple was present; it was "a Mass of thanksgiving for the group ‘In cammino’ [On the way]
which aims to accompany and offer support in the Christian life also for people with homosexual tendencies"
Just this one sentence is packed with lies
as adherents of the 'In cammino' group: the Daily Compass provided the photographic evidence and statements by the celebrants which refute the diocese of Bologna
we are also able to reveal the content of the WhatsApp message with which Pietro invited his friends to take part in the ceremony: “on Saturday 11 June 2022
Giacomo and I will be civilly united at Budrio Town Hall
we will celebrate a mass of thanksgiving/entrustment for our life together”
Second lie: the purpose of the group in question is not simply "to accompany and support people with homosexual tendencies in the Christian life"
as the diocese's communiqué says
but to bring the LGBT agenda to the heart of the Church
the legitimisation of any sexual orientation
the practical application of gender ideology
‘In cammino’ does not take the Church's doctrine on gender and homosexuality seriously
who immediately invited the group to come out into the open and their activity became part of the diocesan ministry
presenting as welcoming the person what in reality is the imposition of an ideology
And so does the communiqué of the Archdiocese of Bologna, quoting in a partial, erroneous and misleading way the letter to the bishops from the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
In order to justify the activity of the group 'In cammino'
16 of the Ratzinger document: "God loves every person and so does the Church
renewing her commitment against all discrimination and violence on the basis of sexual orientation"
considering it "reductive to define the identity of persons solely on the basis of their 'sexual orientation'"
this quotation is taken from the final document of the Youth Synod (par
which only in the second part of the sentence - the person cannot be defined by sexual orientation alone - takes up the concept expressed in no
16 of Ratzinger's Letter on the pastoral care of homosexual persons
But in Ratzinger's letter this statement followed the denunciation of the activity of a gay lobby within the Church which
aided by external forces and enemies of the Church
aims to subvert the Church's teaching on sexuality (nos
in which the task of pastoral care for homosexual persons is well defined:
"This Congregation therefore encourages the Bishops to promote
a pastoral care for homosexual persons in full accord with Church teaching
No authentic pastoral programme will be able to include organisations in which homosexual persons associate with each other
unless it is clearly established that homosexual activity is immoral
A truly pastoral attitude will include the need to prevent homosexual persons from the proximate occasions of sin”
the document of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith clearly condemns activities such as those of the 'In cammino' group and the pastoral approach advocated by Cardinal Zuppi
We are therefore faced with outright act of charlatanism
a conscious and colossal work of mystification in order to prove that "the Church of Bologna" is "in full harmony with the Magisterium and the Doctrine of the Church"
and this is where Cardinal Zuppi's strategy is revealed: to promote an anthropological revolution in the Church by giving the idea of being in harmony with Tradition
ClampArt is pleased to announce “Fabio Torre: A Contemporary Glance”—the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States
Fabio Torre’s work is characterized by a persistent reflection on the relationship between photography and painting
The photographic image has been elaborated over the years using the classic tool of oil painting not only to make a technical reproduction with a trompe l’oeil effect (as with photo-realism)
but also with the purpose of representing the “photographic” in more conceptual terms
Torre’s work references analogue photography and classic black-and-white cinema from the 1960s in an attempt to draw a connection to contemporary imagery
while rendering highly accurate representations of analog cameras
Torre’s paintings invert relationships between the observer and one who is observed
“A Contemporary Glance” includes selections from three series: Hasselblad
Here the observer is involved in a play of glances
including first the mechanical eye of the cameras
The Hasselblads aim their fixed and ostensibly objective glances
they seem to possess a kind of tactile and physical presence
in the Double Portraits the human subjects are painted larger than life in black suits on white backgrounds imbuing them with a strong sculptural effect
The same sitter represented twice with minimal temporal or formal gaps is meant to invoke a kind of three-person dialogue with the viewer
establishing an intimate environment (often with erotic overtones)
the small portraits comprising the series Young Men depict some of the artist’s personal friends caught with intense expressions portrayed with minimal but extremely direct representation
and now lives and works in Bagnarola di Budrio (Bologna)
He has been exhibiting his work in Europe for nearly twenty years
In the final of the second round of the Golden Swing on South American clay, the 38-year-old from Budrio and the 28-year-old from Turin, third seeding favourites, beat the number one seeding pair, made up of the Spaniard Marcel Granollers and from Argentina Horacio Zeballos, with the score 6-2 7-6 (6). Bolelli and Vavassori were finalists at the Australian Open, overcome in the final by the duo of Indian Rohan Bopanna and Australian Matthew Ebden 7-6, 7-5.
A satisfaction for Vavassori, n.152 in the ranking, who had missed his first career semi-final in the singles, defeated 7-6(1) 6-1 by the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, n.2 in the ranking and first seeding favourite, as well as reigning champion.
Curiosity: Vavassori and Bolelli will face each other the day after tomorrow Granollers and Zeballos again in the first round (these are the round of 500) of the Rio de Janeiro tournament (ATP 2), in which the Spanish-Argentine pair is seeded number XNUMX.
Jacques Toussaint began his artistic activity in Italy in 1971 after studying at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After his first exhibitions in France and Italy
at the same time he begins to take an interest in furniture design and for several years he will be a consultant for some important furniture companies
Interflex and Matteo Grassi; for the latter he develops a line of products and acts as art director
At the end of 1985 he created the Atelier brand as a synthesis of his previous experiences
with the aim of producing projects entrusted to emerging designers
or more established ones such as Toshiyuki Kita
With Atelier he also dedicates himself to the re-edition of projects signed by masters of international level such as Alvar Aalto
Starting from 1993 he collaborated on the definition of a new collection of objects in recycled paper for the Arbos di Solagna
a collection of mirrors born from research on glass
a collection of artistic objects that intends to highlight the existing connections between people and things that have influenced his work
Starting from 2000 Toussaint began to develop a series of in situ installations of particular importance and in constant evolution in relation to the spaces
in addition to providing a form of estrangement in the viewer
This trend finds its beginning in the exhibition Between dream and reality organized by the Arsenal Gallery in the space of Palazzo Branicki in Bialystok (PL)
followed by interventions at the Cocchi Foundation in the Water Towers of Budrio and again in the deconsecrated church of San Francesco in Pordenone with the exhibition In Itinere
to arrive at the ambitious project… Que du bleu
created in the large spaces of the Palazzo delle Stelline gallery at the Institut Français in Milan
The French artist has been invited several times to present his works at the Casabianca Museum in Malo (Vicenza)
an institution that illustrates through graphic works and not only the various stages of international contemporary art from 1960 to the present day
After having carried out a series of artistic interventions in religious buildings with ancient history
in 2019 he directed his attention to the intrinsic qualities of modern architecture
choosing the church of Santa Maria Assunta di Riola di Vergato
the result of a long design by the architect Finnish Alvar Aalto (1898-1976)
for an installation composed of videos and lights
presented in 2020 which will be followed by a new artistic intervention in January next year
The long work of analysis and review of 50 years of activity that preceded the publication of the monograph Jacques Toussaint
has also further renewed his way of doing research
which he finds in this exhibition in La Spezia
in the work Galassia CAMeC / JT-840 x 675 h 500 SP
His works are present in the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum (USA)
the National Museum of Poznan (PL) and the Gallery of Modern Art
