Caivano has sued a group of parents — some of whom have now become national, conservative media celebrities — for defamation Caivano is represented in the case by her husband the Roxbury Township Board of Education met again to discuss the standing of “Gender Queer” in the library both urging the board to remove “Gender Queer” and calling on members to oppose such bans NJ Spotlight News spoke to Caivano before Tuesday’s meeting about the book NJ Spotlight News: Can you tell us about the book “Gender Queer” Roxana Russo Caivano: “Gender Queer” is a memoir and details what Maia went through in their life from the time they were young and into adulthood such as their questions with sexuality and just not knowing where they fit in life the individuals in question are objecting to some of the pictures that are in the book But “Gender Queer” has won numerous awards It’s won the American Library Association’s Alex Award which is an award given to a book that started out as an adult-level book but they felt that it was appropriate for young adults that’s when I purchased it for my library NJSN: How important would you say it is for students to be reading and learning from a diverse set of literature reading a book like this might change someone’s life if they’re unable to connect with an adult and learn about other experiences that are out there why I exist in the library — to be able to put books in the hands of the kids who need them There are kids who don’t know where to turn that might not have an adult that they could talk to openly and freely Coming to the library might be the only place where they can get this information They might not have the money to go to a bookstore to buy the book or it might just not be available to them They might not be able to get to the public library Sometimes the school library is the only place where these kids have access to books Being able to put that book in someone’s hands who might need it that’s everything to me and even if it helps one student NJSN: I think I can understand as a parent being maybe fearful of a book or perhaps not letting your kid read a book that you disagree with but why do you think this push has happened where people don’t want other people’s kids to read certain books RRC: That’s the thing that boggles my mind the most I don’t think anyone has the right to tell anyone else what they can do I might be perfectly fine with my child reading this book and if my kids were in high school I would be 100% fine with them reading this book No one has the right to tell my children what they can and can’t read If they don’t want their children to read this book I have no issues with people not taking this book out no one has taken this book out of my library It’s been in the library — I think I purchased it in the summer of 2020 — and no one has checked it out I keep saying I’ve got 20,000 volumes in my library there are 19,999 others that you can choose from NJSN: I wonder if this type of situation in the community increases the possibility of bullying or marginalizing certain students RRC: I haven’t noticed anything like that What I have heard from the adviser of our LGBTQ club in our school was that they’re just happy knowing that books like this exist in the library They like walking into the library and seeing themselves in the books We talk about books being windows and mirrors and to be able to see yourself in a book is a really important thing for a teenager NJSN: How much of this (in terms of book banning) is a New Jersey issue and how much of it is a nationwide issue I know several librarians who have had this book and others challenged in New Jersey I go to a lot of librarian conferences and for the past couple of years this has been the main issue that everyone’s talking about It’s so scary that this is happening in this day and age that people want to take books off the shelf Editor’s note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length admits he's more comfortable working off to the side or in the background Caivano has handled album productions for AGNOSTIC FRONT had a tour of duty with New York hardcore legends MURPHY's LAW and even had a stint in the early '90s on a major label with his thrash band Yet a solo album never entered Caivano's mind until the pandemic brought life to a halt and opened up the creative vaults Caivano's aptly-named self-titled album is everything you would imagine it to be from someone who has been so embedded in hard The album is a highly effective exercise in no-frills and no-excess rock pulling from his primary influences of THE RAMONES MOTÖRHEAD and THE STOOGES for ten songs that get in and get out It received the seal of approval from Wyndorf and many of those who have crossed paths with Caivano in his 40-plus years in the music business Blabbermouth: You've been a producer and musician on many projects but never did a solo album until this year And how did you fare being in charge of everything I've been around some great producers my whole career I know I can play guitar; I know I can play bass I'm not so sure I can 'sing.' [Laughs] I'm not so sure about this thing called 'vocals.' My arrangements are pretty simple I wanted to complete it as I started to get into it It's not what I want to do.' As I started getting into it I never thought to do a solo or side project I was never interested in doing that because I've always been happy working with Dave I've always been happy being the guitar player in MONSTER MAGNET for the last quarter of a century I felt the time was right and enjoyed doing it." Blabbermouth: Did you share any songs with Dave while you were working on the album but Dave and I have these insane conversations I did talk to him a lot during the process Send me something!' I wanted to send him something when I finished because of the isolation factor and where we were then whatever it may be.' When it came time to do the vocals who happens to be one of the greatest singers in rock Blabbermouth: How did it feel jumping back into lead vocals after three decades The last time you did them was when you were in BLITZSPEER I've gotten in front of the mic with some bands I've worked with but I've never taken upon since the BLITZSPEER days lead vocal activity It was interesting because I hadn't done it in so long I remember I did put on a BLITZSPEER record to hear I can do some of the things I did back then People have to remember that vocalists age Very few can do what they did in their younger years We've been lucky to see some great performers and vocalists in music history When you look at what some of these bands did in their late teens and twenties and are doing in their fifties and sixties and some in their seventies now plug in an amp and plug in a pedal and it's relatively the same as when I started making music Dave really coached me through a lot of stuff Blabbermouth: Was the idea for the solo album to make a distillation of the rock The best part is that all the songs get to the point right away I've been really fortunate to be around a lot of different scenes All this great music was on the radio and I'd hang with my friends' older brothers and listen to records I remember sneaking into my friends' brothers' rooms in the early '70s What is that record?' I loved being around the punk rock I can drive there in 25 minutes from where I'm sitting now I'd go where Jonny Z [Zazula] sold records at the Route 18 flea market I remember Jonny back then and going to parties with the metal scene It was another scene bubbling up In my backyard." Blabbermouth: The one album you did in BLITZSPEER That was when major labels were still investing in new metal bands Phil: "We did a live record [1990's 'Live'] That was a really interesting time in New York I don't think the New York bands could have competed with Seattle When we break it down as fans and historians The major labels in New York tried to do what was going on [Laughs] There was no Kurt Cobain [NIRVANA] or Kim Thayil [SOUNDGARDEN] ALICE IN CHAINS] first time in New York City 'Where did that guy come from?' Where did that guitar player come from Our contemporaries in BLITZSPEER were CIRCUS OF POWER But the major labels didn't let us be ourselves but I think the bands that came out of the New York scene If they let us be who we are and who we were at the time maybe something more would have flourished Another band that came out from that area was QUICKSAND It was an honor to be part of a band making a record for a major label." Blabbermouth: Returning to what we talked about with your solo album [Laughs] I like to make things happen behind the scenes We tried to do something.' We were looking for a singer and we were looking for another guitar player I could do a Lemmy [Kilmister] gravel-throated thing If a guy could play 'Ace Of Spades' and 'Metropolis' Blabbermouth: MONSTER MAGNET was on a major when you joined in 1998 Did that make you reluctant at all to join the band because of your experiences earlier in the decade Phil: "I had moved to Los Angeles to pursue production taking something apart and helping someone put it together it wasn't the major label thing I was reluctant about 'You're asking me?' I was at a lot of shows the history of the band starting with 'Spine Of God' 'Why do you want me to join?' It's funny — even though I was initially reluctant I knew I had to figure out how to get back to New Jersey to do it as soon as I processed everything since I was here in Jersey for the holidays 'He really asked me to join the band?' What that looked like at the time it just sounded almost like a Charlie Brown teacher 'I have to think about this.' A couple of days went by and Dave called me 'You got three weeks to decide what you want to do.' After that phone call Dave and I had a great conversation where we said that no matter what happens we will remain friends because we have known each other for so long 'I want my old friend with me along for the ride Who knows how long this will last?' When I hung up the phone I decided I was going to do it and I needed to get my ass back to New Jersey." Blabbermouth: Would you consider doing shows as a solo artist I will.' It's looking like it will make sense a group of guys and I have some on my mind That's what thing about being such good friends with Mr Wyndorf is that he's giving me his blessing to do whatever I want To have that from my bandmate and friend because I know certain situations like this can cause friction I know many bands and guys in bands that have done solo projects and side projects They want to do something so drastically different than what they're known for to get this cred or respect or whatever it may be I feel fortunate that I don't need to do that There was a period doing this where I thought 'This guitar part sounds so much like MONSTER MAGNET.' My friend goes 'You've been the guitar player for MONSTER MAGNET for 25 years Maurizio Patriciello has had police protection since a bombing near his church in Caivano Father Maurizio Patriciello is running late “I’m waiting for my bodyguards,” he says by text message He is neither a celebrity nor a politician but a parish priest in Caivano crime-ridden town on the outskirts of Naples He has been living under police protection ever since a bomb accompanied by the message “get out of our way” The threat was the Camorra’s response to Patriciello’s unrelenting battle against the mafia organisation’s illegal dumping of toxic waste across farmland in the Campania region of southern Italy he persevered with his mission: to fight crime and delinquency in a poor community that until last summer had long been neglected by the state at San Paolo Apostolo church and settles on a pew by the altar which is bedecked with a huge nativity scene where some of his parishioners have unwittingly become drug mules for the mafia Father Patriciello is shown to an armoured car parked in front of his church Photograph: Roberto Salomone/The Guardian“They get paid €50 to deliver a package and the response is always: ‘This way my children eat,’” he says “These abandoned districts – like the banlieues of Paris – are deliberately planned and wanted a closed-off society that creates its own language something bad did happen and the state took notice.” created in 1980 as what was intended to be a temporary home for thousands of people made homeless by the devastating Irpinia earthquake was put under the spotlight in August after the alleged repeated gang rapes of two girls aged nine and 11 The girls, who are cousins, were allegedly abused by a group of 15, 13 of them boys. Two of the suspects are the sons of alleged mafia bosses. Some of the alleged rapes took place in an abandoned sports complex in Parco Verde, an area in Caivano considered to be the most prominent in Europe for drug dealing coming to light only because videos of the rapes were shared online and eventually ended up with the police “The girls were not raped by a paedophile in his 50s; they were raped by a group of boys – children like themselves … and it did not happen just once: this violence occurred for months,” says Patriciello Knowing he was risking the wrath of the crime gangs ruling the neighbourhood the priest once again put his head over the parapet and wrote to Italy’s prime minister including an apartment containing an illegal puppy farm and cages filled with exotic animals The initiative marked the first stage of what Meloni described as her rightwing government’s quest to “make citizens feel the state’s presence” “Her quick response left me really stunned,” says Patriciello “I had met [the former prime ministers] Matteo Renzi and Giuseppe Conte but the difference with Meloni is that she really took the situation in hand.” Caivano has since become the government’s template for its pledge to rescue Italy’s long-deprived neighbourhoods Police numbers in the town have significantly increased with three safety commissioners tasked with overseeing the district’s rehabilitation The local council was dissolved and 18 people arrested for alleged mafia infiltration and corruption Work to revive the sports centre has begun after the government unlocked €30m (£25m) in funding making it easier to arrest and imprison children as young as 14 the leader of the centre-left opposition Democratic party has criticised the law for focusing too much on “repression” and not enough on prevention A used goods vendor decorating his street stand in Parco Verde Photograph: Roberto Salomone/The GuardianPatriciello is impressed by Meloni’s approach and apparent commitment but says much more needs to be done than putting more police on the streets “Not even a packet of drugs has been dealt as the streets are being tightly patrolled,” he says this alone is not enough to resolve the problems here – for example We have three social workers but need at least 20 for such a vast and complex place.” “The last few funerals I have done have all been deaths from tumours, including my nephew,” he says. Patriciello’s sister-in-law also died of cancer last year. “Not long ago, I did the funeral of a woman whose daughter was in the front pew wearing a headscarf. I looked at the coffin and knew that within a year I would be doing her daughter’s funeral too. She died the other day.” Good things happen in Caivano, too, the priest says, such as the recent graduation of a sociology student – although the fact that this was news speaks volumes about the state of education locally. “This would be normal for a girl in Milan or Venice, but for us it isn’t. But when a good thing happens here, it is worth a thousand times more than when it happens elsewhere.” It is common for the mafia to retreat when security is tightened in its strongholds, with clans waiting for the state to shift its focus elsewhere before resuming business. Caivano’s problems are deeply entrenched, but Patriciello is hopeful that the events of recent months can usher in a brighter future. “Caivano has become a symbol,” he says. “But it could also now be a guiding light for all marginalised societies in Italy.” This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025. MyersFeatures20 March 2015 I could argue that Varda Caivano has in productive and meaningful ways been painting versions of the same painting – her painting – ever since I first met her in 2002 soon after she had started the MA in Painting course at the Royal College of Art and I had begun a two-year stint there as visiting professor of painting I am looking at the small takeaway card she produced for the RCA’s degree show in 2004 On the front is an image of one of her paintings from that exhibition; on the reverse her name email address (now changed) and mobile number (still the same) Anyone who has paid attention to Caivano’s work over the past decade would immediately recognise this painting as hers 2004 (it was included in her 2006 Kunstverein Freiburg exhibition) Painted in oil (she would switch to acrylic for two years while pregnant) it pieces together what can be best described as moments of muted colours (blues purples and several browns) to make a roughly ovoid shape that takes up all but the left and bottom edges of the canvas It presents itself as a contemplative accumulation of gentle contradictions as it is somehow as clear about its ambiguity as it is equivocal about its clarity fully present yet perpetually in a state of becoming (she’s very very good at putting down paint that appears material and ethereal all at once) the landscape and/or the body while being all and none of those things itself I remember that the paintings from the beginning had achieved a level of continuity that is not common even in the work of strong painting students (if only because too many people At first because my conversations with Caivano between 2004 and 2006 each time very much not picking up from wherever we left off but instead retracing steps from our prior conversations to enter into the new work at hand I do remember that the paintings from the beginning had achieved a level of continuity that is not common even in the work of strong painting students (if only because too many people evidence of her early commitment to a level of focus and a type of simmering development that has served her work very well ever since Then there is the way in which Caivano regularly describes her paintings most recently in The Independent: ‘I think the paintings are like thoughts.’ Put another way; thinking about thoughts is On the occasion of her first solo exhibition in the United States at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago Caivano has been given prime real estate to introduce her painterly thinking to a meaningful conversation that has been taking place in Chicago for – as of 2015 – a century Not known these days for being particularly painting-friendly in its programming the Renaissance Society nonetheless provides Caivano an ideal think-tank for her work: situated at the end of one of the floors of architect Henry Ives Cobb’s 1892 Gothic Revival building that was modelled after those at Oxford it is one of the most transporting and transformative exhibition spaces in the city she was reticent to identify precisely what she was planning to include other than that it would be a new body of work: mixed-media paintings collage and – tantalisingly – a new piece of writing I was prepared for her reticence because I recognise it as a part of her thought process a necessary part of what it takes for her to hold the work as open as possible It is ideal that the exhibition will open in February and close in April as Chicago – hopefully – transitions from winter to spring It is impossible not to consider nature as a language that Caivano uses and deliberately holds open in her work by way of the tried-and-true components of painting: shape ‘Caivano’s paintings neither represent nature nor put the artist in its place and yet they remind us of nature.’ I would add that Caivano’s paintings with one of my favourite lyrical questions: Morrissey’s “Nature is a language – can’t you read?” Caivano’s paintings frequently come across as having been brought right up to the point of nameability as only a thing in and of itself 2014) appears as if it’s on the verge of representing a particular landscape or place: numerous discrete areas of different blues-to-purples occupy most of the bottom two-thirds of the canvas One area of green has been placed at the work’s horizontal midpoint echoing a larger fully exposed area in the upper right corner as well as more of it that emerges from behind layers of other colours (including bits of red and yellow) across the entire top of the canvas At this point my inadequate description makes the painting sound as if it were abstract; however the inclusion of one painted line that runs vertically down the entire canvas disrupts it and keeps it from becoming an image of a landscape by reasserting the entire thing as nature itself – that is the painting as nature that is (always) a language she did convey to me that she considers the new work for Chicago as constituting “a third moment” describing to me her desire to attain a certain level of complexity between drawing and painting (including writing as well) by incorporating drawing more directly into the paintings Her plan is to have everything as different as possible: media positions (at Tomio Koyama in Kyoto in 2009 she placed unstretched canvases on the floor in front of paintings on the wall) all coming together by way of the consistency and variation of her pictorial thoughts to transform her third moment into many more moments for the rest of us The first US solo exhibition of work by Varda Caivano is on view at the Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago through 19 April. sector bodies or the carrying out of other activities for the benefit of the community to which they belong for a period ranging from two to eight months Once the period of suspension of the trial has expired the judge declares the crime extinguished; otherwise he returns the documents to the public prosecutor ROXBURY - The high school librarian in this Morris County town apparently has had enough of some residents complaining about books that she has been labeled a "child predator" who is "luring children with sexually explicit materials." It's no surprise the national debate over books in public schools has prompted litigation appears to be as much about freedom of speech as it is what books kids read The defendants are four township residents - Thomas Seretis Some of the defendants are active with a website devoted to publicizing school material they deem overly sexual and not fit for students there are books in Roxbury Public High School that are not age or school appropriate," is what the website - Roxbury Parental Rights in Education - says one response to this could be a simple one - parents who don't like some of the books in the library can make sure their children do not read them Librarian Caivano claims in the suit that the defendants' activity has gone beyond merely criticizing the books the suit says that the defendants have used social media appearances at school board meetings and other interactions to label the librarian a "child abuser" and one who endangers the welfare of children amounts to "libel and slander per se," given the fact Caivano is a "private person." That verbiage is far from a throw-away line Private individuals have much greater legal protection against public attacks than do public officials may consider a high school librarian a "public figure," given her position with a public entity - the township board of education the superintendent of schools or board members do not be surprised if this issue pops up as the case evolves What definitely will pop up is the argument that the defendants are merely exercising the right of free speech "Why would a librarian sue parents over an issue that should be openly debated in the public domain and in the public forum of a BOE meeting Seeking to silence parents is at odds with our rights to act as citizens in an informed democracy." The statement also noted the obvious - this is an issue raging across the nation right now And it is one that clearly breaks along political lines with conservatives complaining about books and liberals defending them it would seem that the plaintiff here has the challenge of demonstrating that the defendants' activities are malicious and that they go beyond normal debate over a public issue Honestly think the best thing that can be done in these situations is to bring up all of the screwed up passages in the Bible and get that on the chopping block to get banned Beat them at their own game and get the "good book" banned How can "parents who don’t like some of the books in the library can make sure their children do not read them" Especially (but certainly not only) if the book is assigned for a class Fred Snowflack or the editor should have posted the underlying factual basis for this debate A government employee made choices that some in the community have challenged Let us Olympics and this year’s World Cup in Brazil holds a bachelors of journalism from the University of Texas at Austin Democratic lawmakers are looking to address the social media trolling and harassment that school librarians have faced amid calls in some New Jersey districts to ban or remove books from their library shelves A new state bill called the “Freedom to Read Act” proposes that school boards be required to adopt policies governing material and its removal from school libraries the bill would also protect librarians from being sued by people who disagree with their book choices While some Republican politicians say the bill would erode parental freedoms New Jerseyans are more concerned about book banning than about any potentially inappropriate content according to a new poll conducted by Rutgers' Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling 58% of residents say they're more concerned that schools may ban books and censor topics that are educationally important versus 35% who say they're more concerned about teaching from books that students or parents feel are inappropriate or offensive “We see similar numbers when it comes to talking about the motivation behind recent laws across the country banning books or making it illegal for teachers to talk about LGBTQ or racial issues,” said Ashley Koning an assistant research professor and the director of the Eagleton Center Florida, Utah, South Carolina, Kentucky and Mississippi have all passed laws limiting classroom discussions or teaching about race and sex or sexual orientation in some form though some of the laws are limited to early grades Similar laws are under consideration in other states 56% of New Jerseyans believe that book banning and censorship measures are mostly driven by politicians to advance their careers with 31% saying they're mostly being driven by parental concern Self-identified Republicans are the only group where a 67% majority is more concerned about inappropriate content Some 44% of Republicans feel laws pushing for bans are politically motivated while 43% believe they are being driven by real parental concern More: State education group considers taking stand against book banning in public schools More: Roxbury parents want 'porn' out of library, but school board says few books get challenged It doesn’t represent public opinion as a whole but it is a scientific and representative way of gauging what New Jerseyans think “What these numbers really tell us is a solid number of over half of New Jerseyans are against book bans and believe that they are politically motivated,” Koning said Roxbury school librarian Roxana Caivano sued four township residents in March last year on grounds of defamation Her lawsuit alleged that the defendants labeled her a "child predator" and accused her of "luring children with pornography" in public and online mostly over Caivano’s inclusion in the high school library of “Gender Queer,” a graphic novel that made the top of PEN America’s list of most banned books in the U.S And just a few weeks ago in the North Hunterdon-Voorhees regional district speakers at a packed school board meeting talked about Martha Hickson a librarian in the district who has faced severe attacks online from groups that opposed her selection of books in the high school library Harassing videos featuring Hickson's name and photograph were posted online and Hickson received threatening emails using a sexual slur “How did all these Ghislaine Maxwells get into the school libraries?” said one such post featuring a photo of Hickson Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking 'Freedom to Read' billThe “Freedom to Read” bill was driven in part by conversations with Hickson about the trolling she faces The bill would require school boards to create a policy governing what materials are in district libraries as well as a policy regarding their removal School boards would craft their policies based on a model policy created by the state librarian in collaboration with the state education commissioner and the New Jersey Association of School Librarians The bill would also apply to public libraries and their governing boards Libraries would have to provide “diverse and inclusive” materials that concern protected classes in New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination these materials would have to be age- and grade-appropriate Books by and about racial minorities and LGBTQ+ themes are the most widely targeted subject matter for book bans the bill would give librarians immunity from being sued for “just doing their job,” Zwicker said a librarian or any other staff member of a public library would be “immune from criminal or civil liability,” language in the bill says Librarians also would have the right to bring lawsuits if they face harassment “for complying with the provisions of the bill.”  Efforts to pass a law that would have cut state funding to libraries that remove books failed in 2023 also backed by Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz is taking a different tack at protecting free speech intending “to protect the freedom of New Jersey’s residents to read and for school libraries and public libraries to acquire and maintain materials without external limitations.” The bill will have its first hearing next month in the Senate Education Block-like shapes gently tessellate across the canvases now on view at Victoria Miro with densely built areas giving way to open spaces; an oblique reflection of the urban landscape perhaps Caivano has created a visual lexicon so sophisticated that she succeeds in referencing the external world through touches that pull her paintings back from the brink of pure abstraction Untitled , 2014-2015Victoria MiroUntitled , 2014-2015Victoria MiroAdvertisementThe works at Victoria Miro have been described as representing a “third moment” in Caivano’s practice This new phase is characterized by the more decisive role that drawing plays in the recent paintings evidenced by the selection of small drawings on view as well as the more graphic nature of the paintings The different roles played by pencil and paint typify Caivano’s close attention to process and mastery of her materials; careful charcoal marks and ethereal washes are united in their controlled application Installation view of Varda Caivano at Victoria Miro Caivano’s newly adopted palette of greys makes the subtle architecture of her paintings more visible Areas of unpainted canvas reveal the pencil markings beneath offering a glimpse into the underlying structure Order and discipline do not diminish the warmth and liveliness of her work; rather The paintings are metacognitive—thoughts about thought—mental energy metered out in line and shade Varda Caivano is on view at Victoria Miro Follow Victoria Miro on Artsy. Her studio is small, with many paintings turned face to the walls. People are coming soon to collect paintings for her upcoming show at a gallery in Tokyo, and she is still considering what to send. "I always take 40 per cent more then I need so I can see how it looks in the space." Caivano has had a high-profile year, with a room of her paintings included in the Venice Biennale. Biennale director, Massimiliano Gioni, selected works with her via Skype, she confides, as she makes me a strong coffee. Spending her days studying works of art, she asked questions about technique that seemed to irritate the curators, before admitting that this was not what she wanted to do. Caivano came to London and attended the Royal College of Art. Chris Ofili, a fan of her work, introduced her to her gallerist Victoria Miro, with whom she continues to show. Caivano hangs some paintings for me to look at. They are tantalising: elements of figuration flirt with total abstraction and the palette of blues and violets is both seductive and mystical. "I think the paintings are like thoughts," she says. I point out how unusual it is to see so many paintings in a studio at one time, and she replies: "I think the studio works like a head, because I make many paintings at the same time." It is up to the viewer to make their own decisions about the canvases. Caivano does not make it easy, leaving them untitled. "I don't want to tell them titles, or anything – but I want to explain to them that this is what's happening in the studio." "I think it's also because the function of some paintings is to have fights and arguments with other paintings, rather than just sitting there." The activity of the work chimes with her own intense involvement. "I mean, you paint with all of you! You paint with what you read, what you see, with what you know." Vara Caivano will be showing at Victoria Miro Gallery, London (020 7336 8109) in 2014 Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies The senator of Italy alive Daniela Sbrollini, member of the bicameral commission on femicide, spoke of “a summer of violence that obliges politics, as far as it is in its power, to intervene.
