Birdlife Malta’s events and activities group has teamed up with Legambiente in the Canicattini Bagni region of Sicily to organise exchange visits which include cultural
Group members and friends recently visited the Canicattini Bagni region on a day tour
Canicattini Bagni is a municipality in the province of Syracuse located about 190km southeast of Palermo and about 20km southwest of Syracuse
Bosco di Mandredonna was the group’s first stop where participants enjoyed a nature walk in the forest renowned for its diversity in flora
Various species were seen and sampled along the walk
The day also included a mushroom-picking activity
Paolino Uccello accompanied the group and pointed out the different types of mushrooms growing wild and ready for picking
After a traditional lunch at a leading agritourism farm
the Stone Bridge of San Alfano built in 1796
followed by a visit to the historical centre of Canicattini Bagni
a relatively small town of just over 7,000 inhabitants
The town is known as the City of Liberty and Music and is renowned for its history

The museum displays many reproductions of the old houses and workshops of the village where it is possible to discover and understand the customs and traditions of the area

Neighbouring countries are reporting new outbreaks of COVID-19 among citizens who recently returned from visiting Malta
as leaders in those countries increasingly voice criticism of how Maltese officials have responded to the pandemic
A cluster of 32 new reported cases of COVID-19 overnight in Sicily has begun to worry the authorities in Palermo
Malta is believed to be the origin of one of the main clusters from these newly registered cases
Italian newspaper La Repubblika is quoting the mayor of Canicattini Bagni
after her city registered an increase in COVID-19 cases
saying that most of those infected had travelled to Malta

The news comes after Malta was deemed unsafe for travel by other countries
America’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention also marked Malta as presenting a “high risk”
urging its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to the island
