One person is dead and 14 others injured when a house party in southeast Houston turned deadly early Sunday morning after gunfire erupted According to CBS Houston affiliate KHOU Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu said that emergency calls began flooding in around 12:50 a.m. reporting gunshots at a residence in the area Officers responding to the scene said they could still hear gunfire as they arrived police discovered several people with gunshot wounds outside the house Cantu stated that the incident started during a family gathering when an individual who was not invited had been told to leave- and that person allegedly responded by opening fire Others at the party reportedly drew their own weapons and returned fire Cantu said there were multiple scenes officers were investigating and many of those who were injured were scattered at various spots around the home where the party was happening Members of the Houston Fire Department provided medical aid to victims in the parking lot of a nearby restaurant and several of the injured were listed in critical condition and undergoing surgery Some individuals took themselves to hospitals for treatment Houston Police Department deeply missed by all who knew her Working out of a converted barn in upstate New York, where he’s been based for several years, he recruited a new set of players for Gift Songs: Omer Shemesh on piano, Booker Stardrum on drums but the palette this time is almost entirely acoustic; it would be easy to believe that there was no electricity involved beyond the current required to power the mics and roll the tape They went into the studio with little idea of what was to come out which makes the cohesiveness of Gift Songs that much more remarkable Each of the album’s three major parts—the side-long opener “The Milky Sea,” the three-part “Gift Song” suite and the 10-minute drone piece that blossoms out of the latter—feels fully considered both as a standalone and a part of the whole Gift Songs might be an exercise in perspective: one idea Shemesh’s piano is both foreground and background lead and supporting actor; Stardrums’ drums are so subtle that it took me a long time to even register their presence There’s something almost Rothko-like about the way the song’s dusky wash of tone pulls you in What sets “The Milky Sea” apart from merely decorative strains of ambient jazz is its abiding sense of mystery has a way of burying the implicit root note—a structural complexity you might not clock without sitting down and blocking it out on the piano but you can feel it in the song’s ebb and flow which amounts to a handful of taps on the drums at best at first seems uncomplicated and carefully restrained you may eventually realize that he’s counting in five not four—a subtle but crucial detail that helps explain how a piece of music this relaxed can leave you feeling so untethered has the unfussy intimacy of a set of pen-and-ink drawings The first pieces Cantu-Ledesma and Shemesh recorded they invite you to lean close and take in tiny details—the almost inaudible rapid-fire pulsations of certain chords on the organ; the occasional creak of the piano bench or clack of an organ stop; the way organ and piano passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Monday He proudly served for 24 years in the field of meteorology before finally retiring as The court can't bring Denny back to his family but it can achieve justice by giving a sentence that appropriately addresses the seriousness of the case A 15-year sentence gives Cantu the credit he deserves for taking responsibility through a plea deal A strong need exists to protect the public considering Cantu's involvement in dealing drugs in the community The community is "plagued with a drug epidemic," he said argues Cantu had less involvement than co-defendantsDefense attorney Stephanie Rock recommended a sentence of five years in prison followed by three years of initial confinement which she said would reflect Cantu's character and his level of involvement in the shooting There is no evidence Cantu pulled the trigger and he had no intent for someone to die that night which contained some of the items stolen from the Cantus "shots that he did not know were going to be fired that evening." Through his plea Cantu did take responsibility for going to the scene that night and seeking to confront Denny about the stolen items passive and "incredibly respectful" person which was reflected in several character letters submitted to the court Rock asked the court to consider Cantu's character saying he is "so much more than his actions in this case." "I would be the first to acknowledge that five years of initial confinement may not seem like a lot for somebody who was originally charged with intentional homicide," Rock said "But I think that that type of sentence is fully appropriate for the facts of this case and for Mr sentences Cantu to 15 yearsPerfect justice in the case would be bringing Denny back to his family and fixing whatever issues brought Cantu to this situation While Cantu does have rehabilitative needs there needs to be a punishment for the gravity of the offense Walsh recognized the troubles Cantu has faced including a drug addiction that started at just 14 years old but said he is still responsible for the choices he made none of us are responsible for where we come from," Walsh said Walsh sentenced Cantu to 15 years of initial confinement followed by 10 years of extended supervision for the felony murder charge He also sentenced Cantu to one year of initial confinement followed by two years of extended supervision for each of his drug charges which will all run concurrently to the 15-year sentence Gustavo Cantu returns to court April 22 in front of Walsh for his sentencing Vivian Barrett is the public safety reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette You can reach her at vmbarrett@greenbay.gannett.com or (920) 431-8314 and was called to be with the Lord on August 11 and Abraham (Liza) Cantu; as well as his nine grandchildren.  Texas working at the Laredo National Bank and then held a managerial position at Amtrak In 1983 he discovered his love for real estate investment and focused the remainder of his career in that field Juan’s passion was watching his children and grandchildren come together He was an amazing mentor who touched many lives with his generous spirit and willingness to share his wisdom and stories generosity and wisdom will live on through the lives he touched He is lovingly remembered by his loved ones as he enters eternal life with the Lord The family will be receiving condolences on Thursday evening 1410 Jacaman Rd.; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday morning from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels to St Patrick Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the family plot of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.  Joe Jackson North Funeral & Cremation Services a breakthrough line designed to deliver lightweight hydration bouncy curls and waves - without the heavy feel This innovative collection provides the perfect balance of moisture and movement allowing curls and waves to shine with natural definition and effortless style At the heart of the Weightless Collection is Fair Trade and Certified Organic Blue Agave a naturally derived humectant - an ingredient that attracts moisture from the air and locks it into the hair This key ingredient works alongside our lightweight ultra-hydrating formulas to help lock in moisture and smooth frizz - without weighing hair down touchable curls and waves with long-lasting definition and hydration From the Sulfate-free Shampoo to the Defining Gel each product in the collection is designed to nourish curls and waves while keeping them light and bouncy which is why the Weightless Collection features ethically sourced ingredients ensuring that farmers receive fair wages and work under improved labor conditions Key Products in the Weightless Collection: "We're thrilled to introduce this new collection," said Dametria Kinsley "The Weightless Collection is all about offering a light airy touch to curls and waves reaching their full potential with every use." Ramos continued "Do you think he could benefit from a GPS monitor to assure that he's going to remain at home," the defense asked we will follow that," the father responded Judge Boyd ended up setting his bond at $30,000 per charge and ordered full GPS monitoring when Judge Boyd will decide whether to revoke his probation Readers voted Redwood softball player Kenzie Cantu as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County high school athlete of the week Cantu blasted a home run and four RBIs to help the Rangers rout Golden West 16-0 Here's a look at this school year's past winners: Original story: Visalia Times-Delta/Tulare Advance-Register readers can now vote for their favorite high school athletes There are no restrictions so vote now and vote often Here are the choices for the week of April 14-16: Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot Nominations must be received by Monday morning following that week's games for consideration Anyone can nominate an athlete of the week for every sport Readers can email nominations to sports reporter Vongni Yang at vyang2@visaliatimesdelta.com Please include a player’s statistics and a photo if possible GREEN BAY - The homicide trial for Gustavo Cantu of Green Bay began Monday afternoon as the prosecution and defense outlined opposing stories of Cantu's involvement in the fatal shooting of Randall Denny of Hobart by a gunshot wound to the back of the head at the intersection of Western and Perkins avenues is charged with first-degree intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon as a party to a crime and is one of three defendants charged in the case His brother, Alejandro Cantu, was scheduled to stand trial alongside Gustavo Cantu for the same charge but pleaded no contest to felony murder battery as party to a crime last week also faces a charge of first-degree intentional homicide but does not have a trial scheduled discarded gun after incidentThe prosecution's opening statement made by Brown County Assistant District Attorney Foss Davis focused heavily on what happened before and after the April 30 shooting Denny and his aunt went to help Denny's cousin guns and a "sizable amount of drugs" from the Cantu brothers Witnesses will testify that Cantu was angry and frustrated over the theft and that the Cantus and Ventura sought Denny out after finding out his location on the night of the shooting Ventura and a witness who was in the car with Denny when they arrived at Western and Perkins avenues will testify to what happened during the incident Ventura was "hastily collected" by Cantu and driven to the intersection but stayed in the car playing a lottery scratch-off ticket and doing drugs and Cantu came running back to the car and they sped off Cantu handed Ventura a revolver to throw out the window into the Fox River The witness from Denny's car will testify that when the car arrived at the intersection Denny was pulled out of the car before the witness heard gunshots The witness later got a call from Cantu asking who were the two girls in the car with Denny and the witness and told them to "keep their (expletive deleted) mouths shut," Davis said Davis said the prosecution will also rely on phone records GPS tracking and surveillance video to piece the story together and place Cantu in the area of the crime defense attorney Corey Mehlos said in the beginning of his opening statement as many of the witnesses and Denny struggled with addiction Several witnesses were under the influence of drugs when the shooting occurred which puts it up to the jury to determine the credibility of their testimonies Credible evidence will show that there was no plan to murder Denny and evidence will point to someone else being the shooter With witnesses changing their stories and being impaired "There's some type of altercation," Mehlos said "The only thing people really agree on is that at some point later they hear gunshots There are no phone calls on Cantu's phone record to suggest he made the call to the witness in Denny's car that the prosecution included in its opening statement and Cantu didn't even know the witness well enough to be calling him Mehlos also questioned the credibility of Ventura's testimony Ventura didn't offer his statement as to what happened where he would benefit from providing testimony Focusing on how the three men fled after the shooting Mehlos noted that they went to a friend of Ventura's He also said Ventura was the last person to have control of Denny's backpack which was later found in the garage of a house in Tigerton Mehlos urged the jury to focus closely to the facts which he says will show not only that Cantu didn't shoot Denny there is not even close to evidence of Gustavo being the shooter I think it actually points elsewhere," Mehlos said "And there's not even close to evidence to show us that there's some type of plan to kill Randall Denny." Cantu's trial is scheduled to last 12 days the prosecution and defense will call several witnesses to testify witnesses of the shooting and Denny's family members the 14 jury members will have to unanimously decide whether Cantu is guilty or not guilty of the first-degree intentional homicide of Denny Because he is charged as a party to a crime he can be found guilty if he committed the crime or if he knowingly aided and abetted the crime Cantu could face life in prison without parole The jury delivered a guilty verdict Tuesday of felony murder-armed robbery as a party to a crime He was found not guilty of the original charge against him Denny was shot and killed just after 5 a.m at the intersection of Western and Perkins avenues His cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the back of the head Denny stole several items from Cantu and his brother guns and a large amount of methamphetamine Prosecutors argued the theft was a contributing factor to the shooting Alejandro Cantu, 34, of Green Bay, was also charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting. He pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of felony murder-battery on Feb currently faces a first-degree intentional homicide charge Ventura is being tried separately and does not have a trial date scheduled Gustavo Cantu is set to be sentenced April 22 and is facing up to 55 years in prison Erica Hernandez 7 after a warrant for his re-arrest was issued late last month Cantu appeared before Judge Stephanie Boyd on Thursday afternoon and she set his bond at $30,000 per evading arrest charge he was on probation for A hearing on a motion to revoke Cantu’s probation has been scheduled for Dec Cantu pleaded no contest in 187th District Court in early September in exchange for seven years of deferred adjudication a $2,000 fine and serving 200 hours of community supervision Cantu’s driver’s license was suspended for two years Cantu skipped court-ordered drug screenings on Sept court records obtained Thursday by KSAT Investigates show violating the conditions of his community supervision Cantu was accused of fleeing from SAPD officers in a white BMW on Sept Cantu was hospitalized for nearly two months after being shot multiple times in the parking lot of a McDonald’s on Blanco Road by then-SAPD officer James Brennand in October 2022 who was at the restaurant for an unrelated disturbance call approached Cantu’s vehicle after recognizing it from an evading arrest incident the night before After recognizing the maroon BMW from the previous night Brennand opened the driver’s side door without announcing himself as an officer The officer fired toward Cantu as Cantu backed up his vehicle Brennand, who was a probationary officer with seven months of experience, was fired by SAPD days later as the shooting case began to garner national attention He was arrested and later indicted on charges of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault by a public servant The attempted murder charge was not included when the case was re-indicted in late February A discovery hearing in Brennand’s case is scheduled for early March 2025 Read more reporting on the KSAT Investigates page Copyright 2024 by KSAT - All rights reserved Emmy-award winning reporter Dillon Collier joined KSAT Investigates in September 2016 Dillon's investigative stories air weeknights on the Nightbeat and on the Six O'Clock News Dillon is a two-time Houston Press Club Journalist of the Year and a Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Reporter of the Year Erica Hernandez is an Emmy award-winning journalist with 15 years of experience in the broadcast news business Erica has covered a wide array of stories all over Central and South Texas She's currently the court reporter and cohost of the podcast Texas Crime Stories Email Newsletters KSAT RSS Feeds Contests and Rules Contact Us KSAT Internships Careers at KSAT Closed Captioning / Audio Description Public File Current EEO Report Terms of Use Privacy Policy Do Not Sell My Info FCC Applications Copyright © 2025 KSAT.com is managed by Graham Digital and published by Graham Media Group GREEN BAY - Days before he was set to stand trial, a Green Bay man pleaded no contest to charges in the April 2022 shooting death of Randall Denny of Hobart pleaded no contest to felony murder battery as a party to a crime Wednesday morning five days before his three-week jury trial was scheduled to begin Cantu also pleaded no contest to maintaining a drug trafficking place as a party to a crime The drug-related charges were separate from the 2022 shooting and stemmed from two cases All three cases were closed through the plea agreement Cantu was originally charged with first-degree intentional homicide in Denny's murder were also charged in the shooting and both still face first-degree intentional homicide charges Green Bay police officers responded to the intersection of Western and Perkins avenues for a report of gunshots Police found Denny lying in the road and he was pronounced dead at the scene A medical examiner determined Denny's cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the head money and a "large amount" of methamphetamine from the Cantus The Cantu brothers and Ventura fled Green Bay following the shooting, the complaint said. Ventura was arrested in June 2022 but police spent months searching for the Cantus Gustavo Cantu was arrested in Texas in August 2022 and Alejandro Cantu was arrested after returning to Green Bay in September 2022 The Cantu brothers were set to stand trial together starting Feb Gustavo Cantu is still scheduled for that trial date Ventura will be tried separately and his trial date has yet to be scheduled Alejandro Cantu is set to be sentenced on March 31 Annie Cantu Announced as Rowing Assistant Coach Addition7/22/2024 10:49:00 AM | Women's Rowing MSU Rowing Head Coach Stacey Rippetoe appointed Annie Cantu to her staff as an assistant coach "I am beyond excited to start working with Michigan State University's Women's Rowing Team," Cantu said "When I graduated from MSU in 2020 and started my coaching career my dream and goal was to come back to Michigan State to help build the team back to the champions they can be Thank you to the staff for this incredible opportunity and for already making me feel like I'm back home Cantu joins the staff at Michigan State after a three-year tenure as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan She worked primarily with the novices at EMU while also deeply involved with talent transfer recruiting and alumni and parent outreach She is one of three MSU Rowing alum on the team's coaching staff, joining Rippetoe and former teammate Nicole Marek Cantu was a four-year letter-winner and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection at Michigan State where she was a fixture in the varsity eight her final three seasons after splitting time in the novice boat and second eight in her freshman campaign  Cantu rowed in the 2017 Head of the Charles with the Spartans She graduated from MSU in the spring of 2020 with a bachelor's degree in psychology with minors in human behavior and social sciences with her senior season unfortunately cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic Cantu returned home to her native Texas and served as a coach with the Dallas Rowing Club where she had rowed as part of the juniors program throughout high school – beginning her scholastic rowing career in eighth grade at DRC GREEN BAY - The day after a Green Bay man was convicted by a jury of felony murder his attorney asked the court to reconsider a motion for mistrial that was made motioned for a mistrial on the last day of trial because of a comment made by prosecutors Cantu requested the jury be given instruction to also consider a lesser charge of felony murder-substantial battery as party to a crime Felony murder-substantial battery is a significantly lesser crime in Wisconsin with a maximum sentence of 18 years and six months in prison while the maximum sentence for the crime Cantu was convicted of is 55 years Brown County District Attorney David Lasee made a comment to the effect of I don't think we get there," in reference to the request to have the jury consider a lesser charge Lasee's tone was "noticeably loud and seemingly agitated." arguing that it was improper and prejudicial 19 requesting the court to reconsider denying the mistrial Mehlos said the court's decision was "based on an error of law" as Mehlos hadn't had the time to research the issue before moving for a mistrial and did not cite legal authority Mehlos cited legal authority for the motion in the request for reconsideration Mehlos argued Lasee's comments "suggested to the jury that the defense had inappropriately requested a lesser offense of homicide in hopes that the jury may convict him of a lesser offense."
