Working out of a converted barn in upstate New York, where he’s been based for several years, he recruited a new set of players for Gift Songs: Omer Shemesh on piano, Booker Stardrum on drums
but the palette this time is almost entirely acoustic; it would be easy to believe that there was no electricity involved beyond the current required to power the mics and roll the tape
They went into the studio with little idea of what was to come out
which makes the cohesiveness of Gift Songs that much more remarkable
Each of the album’s three major parts—the side-long opener “The Milky Sea,” the three-part “Gift Song” suite
and the 10-minute drone piece that blossoms out of the latter—feels fully considered
both as a standalone and a part of the whole
Gift Songs might be an exercise in perspective: one idea
Shemesh’s piano is both foreground and background
lead and supporting actor; Stardrums’ drums are so subtle that it took me a long time to even register their presence
There’s something almost Rothko-like about the way the song’s dusky wash of tone pulls you in
What sets “The Milky Sea” apart from merely decorative strains of ambient jazz is its abiding sense of mystery
has a way of burying the implicit root note—a structural complexity you might not clock without sitting down and blocking it out on the piano
but you can feel it in the song’s ebb and flow
which amounts to a handful of taps on the drums at best
at first seems uncomplicated and carefully restrained
you may eventually realize that he’s counting in five
not four—a subtle but crucial detail that helps explain how a piece of music this relaxed can leave you feeling so untethered
has the unfussy intimacy of a set of pen-and-ink drawings
The first pieces Cantu-Ledesma and Shemesh recorded
they invite you to lean close and take in tiny details—the almost inaudible
rapid-fire pulsations of certain chords on the organ; the occasional creak of the piano bench or clack of an organ stop; the way organ and piano

People kept honking as they drove by yelling

Erik picked up the habit of watching “Uncle Fred” from his dad
For a while he even researched the possibility that the two Cantus might be related
“At the library and school people would say-- I see your last name is Cantu
They’d get all excited and say that’s awesome

“Just very happy and jolly and very approachable
He just has that personality and good energy that everybody really gravitates toward.”

An outpouring of heartfelt condolences and grief greeted news of the death of Mary Elizabeth Cantú, who died suddenly from a heart attack on Thursday
Cantú was a beloved member of the San Antonio arts community and founder of Spare Parts
a recycling-focused arts nonprofit dedicated to making art supplies accessible and affordable for artists and educators
Congressman Joaquin Castro praised her creative spirit and noted that she volunteered in 2018 to judge for his office’s annual art competition
As noted on the Spare Parts website
Cantú in 2011 “as a response to the lack of arts funds and resources in PreK-12 classrooms,” then incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) venture in 2018
Spare Parts took different forms and shapes in locations throughout the city
with a temporary home in the Wonderland of the Americas
Ms. Cantú and Executive Director Maggi Peachey opened the Spare Parts Center for Creative Reuse in 2020 in a strip mall on Wetmore Road in the northern reaches of the city, touting itself as “San Antonio’s first art supply thrift store.” The store won the San Antonio Current’s popular vote award for “Best Thrift Store” in 2022
calling it “a goldmine for crafters and makers of all ages” that diverted 10 tons of materials from area landfills in one year
Opening the brick-and-mortar store was “the ultimate goal for Mary and helped solidify Spare Parts as a resource for the San Antonio community,” Ms
and a wide support network over the span of a decade
Her advocacy for reuse education through the arts was so prevalent in San Antonio it seemed that everyone either knew Mary or was connected to her through friends or colleagues
Her passion was contagious and her resilience was inspiring.”
Ms. Cantú was Art Department Chair of the Alameda School for Art and Design at Henry Ford Academy, a tuition-free college preparatory high school in San Antonio. She was renowned among those who knew her for her boundless energy. An Instagram post from the Alameda School noted Ms
Cantú started Spare Parts while simultaneously leading art camps
The elegiac post notes that she had “a keen eye for the untapped potential in unlikely materials and found treasures.”
“[Mary] always had a way to utilize everything to its max potential,” said Dezarre Boone
an art educator who first interned with Spare Parts at age 17
Cantú guided her toward becoming a teacher
once helping craft snow globes from baby food jars using knick-knacks and tiny toys Ms
Cantú and volunteers had collected over months
featured as VIP gifts for a Spare Parts fundraising event
Boone recalled how important annual Spare Parts Fine Arts Fair Materials Giveaways were for teachers
Cantú’s determined generosity and a small donation
under-resourced arts educators could grab two armfuls of art supplies to help their students thrive
Head of Community Engagement for Ruby City
Cantú as Director of Young Artist Programs at the Southwest School of Art
“The thing that I always really respected about her was that she centered the experience of the art making
She was such a great advocate for arts educators
and there’s such a need for them to have access to resources that they often don’t [have]
Cantú’s interest in creative culture and community arts education was evident as a student at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts
where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Museum Education with a focus on Cultural Anthropology and Elementary Education
where her Master’s degree studies were concentrated on community-based art
Cantú worked at Artpace as Manager of Public Programs from 2006 to 2010
a San Antonio artist who served on the advisory board of the Mini Art Museum from 2013 to2021
“She’s part of the matriarchal lineage of San Antonio art professionals that have shaped San Antonio profoundly
Ms. Boone recalled that Valentine’s Day was Ms. Cantú’s favorite holiday, and the beloved arts leader’s commitment to her arts community was perhaps best exemplified by the Spare Parts “Crafting Love Beyond Boundaries” Valentine’s Day card making workshop held February 7 to honor “2SLGBTQ+ youth and elders.”
Peachey noted that the event was a partnership with Thrive Youth Center
a San Antonio nonprofit serving LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness
and that she intends such partnerships to continue
“Connecting with the local community and showing compassion to others were hard principles Mary Cantú lived by that Spare Parts will continue to follow.”
but said her legacy as a community catalyst will live on in those she connected through art
“She created a community that supports each other
The Alameda School post notes that in lieu of flowers
Cantú’s family kindly requests donations to a scholarship fund being established in her honor to support Henry Ford Academy graduating seniors pursuing higher education
Donations can be made to: Henry Ford Academy: Alameda School
Spare Parts will reach out to artists who knew Ms
Cantú and ask that they pledge to donate proceeds from the sale of an art piece to the scholarship fund

State Senator Sarah Eckhardt also arranged for a proclamation from the Texas Senate and a Texas flag flown over the state capitol to honor Cantu's career
Cantu was initially charged with first-degree intentional homicide in 2022 but pleaded no contest to the lesser charge of felony murder-battery as a party to a crime just five days before he was set to stand trial
Cantu also pleaded no contest in two unrelated cases to maintaining a drug trafficking place as a party to a crime
possession of narcotics as a party to a crime and possession of narcotics
Green Bay police officers found Denny lying in the road at the intersection of Western and Perkins avenues just after 5 a.m
when they responded to a report of gunshots
later determined to be caused by a gunshot wound to the head
Ventura has yet to stand trial or enter a plea agreement in the case
Denny had stolen several items from the Cantu brothers
Prosecutors argued the shooting occurred during a confrontation over the stolen items
District Attorney David Lasee recommended a sentence of 15 years of initial confinement followed by 10 to 15 years of extended supervision
a recommendation he said "pales in comparison to the loss that the Denny family has suffered."
The court can't bring Denny back to his family
but it can achieve justice by giving a sentence that appropriately addresses the seriousness of the case
A 15-year sentence gives Cantu the credit he deserves for taking responsibility through a plea deal
A strong need exists to protect the public
considering Cantu's involvement in dealing drugs in the community
The community is "plagued with a drug epidemic," he said
argues Cantu had less involvement than co-defendantsDefense attorney Stephanie Rock recommended a sentence of five years in prison followed by three years of initial confinement
which she said would reflect Cantu's character and his level of involvement in the shooting
There is no evidence Cantu pulled the trigger
and he had no intent for someone to die that night
which contained some of the items stolen from the Cantus
"shots that he did not know were going to be fired that evening." Through his plea
Cantu did take responsibility for going to the scene that night and seeking to confront Denny about the stolen items
passive and "incredibly respectful" person
which was reflected in several character letters submitted to the court
Rock asked the court to consider Cantu's character
saying he is "so much more than his actions in this case."
"I would be the first to acknowledge that five years of initial confinement may not seem like a lot for somebody who was originally charged with intentional homicide," Rock said
"But I think that that type of sentence is fully appropriate for the facts of this case and for Mr
sentences Cantu to 15 yearsPerfect justice in the case would be bringing Denny back to his family and fixing whatever issues brought Cantu to this situation
While Cantu does have rehabilitative needs
there needs to be a punishment for the gravity of the offense
Walsh recognized the troubles Cantu has faced
including a drug addiction that started at just 14 years old
but said he is still responsible for the choices he made
none of us are responsible for where we come from," Walsh said
Walsh sentenced Cantu to 15 years of initial confinement followed by 10 years of extended supervision for the felony murder charge
He also sentenced Cantu to one year of initial confinement followed by two years of extended supervision for each of his drug charges
which will all run concurrently to the 15-year sentence

the teenager who was shot by a San Antonio police officer in 2022
appeared in court Thursday after prosecutors said he violated the conditions of his probation for a pair of evading arrest cases
pleaded no contest to the charges back on Sept
9 and received seven years of deferred adjudication and 200 hours of community service
Cantu's license was suspended for two years
It was back in October of 2022 that a then-17-year-old Cantu was shot multiple times in the parking lot of a McDonald's on Blanco Rd
while backing up and driving away from an officer who approached his vehicle
He spent nearly two months in the hospital after sustaining injuries to his lungs
The evading arrest charges came nearly a year later for a pair of incidents that took place a few days apart in September of 2023
It would be another year before he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and received probation for the cases in September of this year
"I don't want to make excuses or anything," Cantu told the judge at the time of his sentencing two months ago
I never want to go through this ever again."
Cantu was observed driving his father's vehicle after an October meeting with his probation officer
a violation of his community supervision terms
"I offer to the court to be mindful that he's 19 years old
He's experienced a significant traumatic event," Cantu's attorney Christopher Ramos told Judge Stephanie Boyd on Thursday
Cantu's father Eric Cantu confirmed his son had used his vehicle previously
"He's not allowed to use that vehicle," his father said
I didn't ask if he's allowed to use the vehicle," prosecutor Harris Edelman clarified
7 for driving on a suspended license and one other charge
The defense reiterated that Cantu only drove to see his probation officer
trying to get this right," Ramos said
He just went about it the wrong way."
considering the fact that Cantu has only been on probation 49 days
considering the relative rapidity with which Mr
Cantu is alleged to have violated the conditions of his supervision
Cantu's family members say they will need a more affordable bond - somewhere around $10,000 - since they say lingering injuries from the shooting have prevented him from having a job
has he had an opportunity or physical capability to work," Ramos asked the father
"The answer to that is no," the father replied
"As a result of the injuries to his lungs
it's difficult for him to engage in physical activity?" Ramos continued
"Do you think he could benefit from a GPS monitor to assure that he's going to remain at home," the defense asked
we will follow that," the father responded
Judge Boyd ended up setting his bond at $30,000 per charge and ordered full GPS monitoring
when Judge Boyd will decide whether to revoke his probation

GREEN BAY - The homicide trial for Gustavo Cantu of Green Bay began Monday afternoon as the prosecution and defense outlined opposing stories of Cantu's involvement in the fatal shooting of Randall Denny of Hobart
by a gunshot wound to the back of the head at the intersection of Western and Perkins avenues
is charged with first-degree intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon as a party to a crime and is one of three defendants charged in the case
His brother, Alejandro Cantu, was scheduled to stand trial alongside Gustavo Cantu for the same charge but pleaded no contest to felony murder battery as party to a crime last week
also faces a charge of first-degree intentional homicide but does not have a trial scheduled
discarded gun after incidentThe prosecution's opening statement
made by Brown County Assistant District Attorney Foss Davis
focused heavily on what happened before and after the April 30 shooting
Denny and his aunt went to help Denny's cousin
guns and a "sizable amount of drugs" from the Cantu brothers
Witnesses will testify that Cantu was angry and frustrated over the theft
and that the Cantus and Ventura sought Denny out after finding out his location on the night of the shooting
Ventura and a witness who was in the car with Denny when they arrived at Western and Perkins avenues will testify to what happened during the incident
Ventura was "hastily collected" by Cantu and driven to the intersection
but stayed in the car playing a lottery scratch-off ticket and doing drugs
and Cantu came running back to the car and they sped off
Cantu handed Ventura a revolver to throw out the window into the Fox River
The witness from Denny's car will testify that when the car arrived at the intersection
Denny was pulled out of the car before the witness heard gunshots
The witness later got a call from Cantu asking who were the two girls in the car with Denny and the witness
and told them to "keep their (expletive deleted) mouths shut," Davis said
Davis said the prosecution will also rely on phone records
GPS tracking and surveillance video to piece the story together and place Cantu in the area of the crime
defense attorney Corey Mehlos said in the beginning of his opening statement
as many of the witnesses and Denny struggled with addiction
Several witnesses were under the influence of drugs when the shooting occurred
which puts it up to the jury to determine the credibility of their testimonies
Credible evidence will show that there was no plan to murder Denny
and evidence will point to someone else being the shooter
With witnesses changing their stories and being impaired
"There's some type of altercation," Mehlos said
"The only thing people really agree on is that at some point later they hear gunshots
There are no phone calls on Cantu's phone record to suggest he made the call to the witness in Denny's car that the prosecution included in its opening statement
and Cantu didn't even know the witness well enough to be calling him
Mehlos also questioned the credibility of Ventura's testimony
Ventura didn't offer his statement as to what happened
where he would benefit from providing testimony
Focusing on how the three men fled after the shooting
Mehlos noted that they went to a friend of Ventura's
He also said Ventura was the last person to have control of Denny's backpack
which was later found in the garage of a house in Tigerton
Mehlos urged the jury to focus closely to the facts
which he says will show not only that Cantu didn't shoot Denny
there is not even close to evidence of Gustavo being the shooter
I think it actually points elsewhere," Mehlos said
"And there's not even close to evidence to show us that there's some type of plan to kill Randall Denny."
Cantu's trial is scheduled to last 12 days
the prosecution and defense will call several witnesses to testify
witnesses of the shooting and Denny's family members
the 14 jury members will have to unanimously decide whether Cantu is guilty or not guilty of the first-degree intentional homicide of Denny
Because he is charged as a party to a crime
he can be found guilty if he committed the crime or if he knowingly aided and abetted the crime
Cantu could face life in prison without parole
The jury delivered a guilty verdict Tuesday
of felony murder-armed robbery as a party to a crime
He was found not guilty of the original charge against him
Denny was shot and killed just after 5 a.m
at the intersection of Western and Perkins avenues
His cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the back of the head
Denny stole several items from Cantu and his brother
guns and a large amount of methamphetamine
Prosecutors argued the theft was a contributing factor to the shooting
Alejandro Cantu, 34, of Green Bay, was also charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting. He pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of felony murder-battery on Feb
currently faces a first-degree intentional homicide charge
Ventura is being tried separately and does not have a trial date scheduled
Gustavo Cantu is set to be sentenced April 22 and is facing up to 55 years in prison

GREEN BAY - The day after a Green Bay man was convicted by a jury of felony murder
his attorney asked the court to reconsider a motion for mistrial that was made
motioned for a mistrial on the last day of trial because of a comment made by prosecutors
Cantu requested the jury be given instruction to also consider a lesser charge of felony murder-substantial battery as party to a crime
Felony murder-substantial battery is a significantly lesser crime in Wisconsin
with a maximum sentence of 18 years and six months in prison
while the maximum sentence for the crime Cantu was convicted of is 55 years
Brown County District Attorney David Lasee made a comment to the effect of
I don't think we get there," in reference to the request to have the jury consider a lesser charge
Lasee's tone was "noticeably loud and seemingly agitated."
arguing that it was improper and prejudicial
19 requesting the court to reconsider denying the mistrial
Mehlos said the court's decision was "based on an error of law" as Mehlos hadn't had the time to research the issue before moving for a mistrial and did not cite legal authority
Mehlos cited legal authority for the motion in the request for reconsideration
Mehlos argued Lasee's comments "suggested to the jury that the defense had inappropriately requested a lesser offense of homicide in hopes that the jury may convict him of a lesser offense."
An Erie teenager on the run for seven weeks following the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Armoni Cantu in the city is suspected by police and prosecutors of being the one among a group of suspects who fired the fatal shot
Prosecutors on Monday said they will seek a first-degree murder conviction against 17-year-old Jamarion J.L
who died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen that Erie police said was fired from a vehicle in the area of West 31st and Liberty streets on the late afternoon of Dec
Another 17-year-old boy was shot in the face and was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital
Prosecutors made their intentions known during an interest-of-justice hearing for Boone before Erie County Judge John Trucilla on Monday afternoon
Such hearings are a requirement under federal law to determine whether a juvenile charged as an adult in a crime should be released
held in juvenile detention or held in prison as the case against the juvenile advances in court
and we don't see that changing," Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Lightner told Trucilla at Monday's hearing
agreed that Boone should be housed at the Erie County Prison instead of the Edmund L
where he had been held since his arrest on Feb
Trucilla granted the transfer to the prison
given that the DA's Office is seeking a conviction for first-degree murder
Boone is one of four suspects charged by Erie police detectives in the shooting
Prosecutors said evidence collected in the case indicates Boone was the one who fired all six gunshots in the incident
Investigators said a group of people were in the area of West 31st and Liberty streets when the gunshots were fired
Lightner said authorities believe the suspects were targeting people in that group
"But Cantu and the other victim were not targeted," Lightner said
Boone and his accused co-defendants — Jahmeir Bibbs
first-degree murder and other charges in the shooting
which police believe stemmed from an altercation earlier in the day at Erie High School
All of the suspects are in custody and are being held without bond as they await a preliminary hearing that is now scheduled for Feb
Brown-House and Thompson are being held in the Erie County Prison
according to information in their criminal docket sheets
