Caorle recalls its historical/religious traditions in honour of the Madonna dell’Angelo
This is an ancient maritime tradition and perhaps one of the most heartfelt events of the summer in Caorle
there will be the evocative procession of the statue of the Madonna dell’Angelo from its sanctuary on the sea promontory to the Cathedral
with the burning of the Bell Tower at 10 pm
The burning of the Bell Tower is a very ancient rite that is lost in the mists of time and takes place in the middle of the summer season
The celebrations will then end on the evening of Sunday 23rd with the return to the sanctuary of the effigy of the Madonnina much loved by the ‘Caorlotti’

Holi-The most famous Festival of colors in Italy after the first stages of the Summer Tour 2023 (tens of thousands of attendance recorded)
arrives in Veneto on the iconic beaches of the summer nightlife: August 12 in Caorle and August 13 in Jesolo
Ferragosto at the Festa grande Santa Viola in Grezzana
Organizers: “From the sea to the mountains
Holi brings joy and fun to the vacation season
many tourists from abroad for the events.”
love and genuine fun that in its eight years of existence has won over half a million people all over Italy
collecting sell-outs at every stop between beaches
And it is the only Holi to have entered movie theaters as the main character in the film “Forever Young” by director Fausto Brizzi
The Summer Tour 2023 baptized “Welcome to the land of colors” started off successfully
more loaded than ever with music and fabulous rainbows
it is back on the road to reach the Veneto coast and land in Caorle and Jesolo
And at mid-August instead there is fun in the cool of the mountains at the Festa grande Santa Viola di Grezzana
Holi from the sea to the mountains pleases everyone
This early season has already seen several tens of thousands of attendees at the first events
Holi is staged in Caorle on Madonnina Beach
a historic stage that has always sold out since its inception
Fabio Lazzari from Treviso and Marco Bari from Vicenza
“Holi on the beach has always been a breathtaking spectacle
You dance by the sea surrounded by a thousand colors of the rainbow
A unique emotion with high scenic impact suitable for everyone
you will dance with your feet on the golden sand amid the notes of the musical selection of deejays Andrea Martini
alternating with the famous vocal countdowns to pace the launches of the colored powders
another exciting rainbow stage will color the Veneto coastline: on Sunday
The appointment is on the beach at Piazza Brescia
until midnight the people of holi lovers will be able to experience the magic of the festival of colors amidst its notes of joy and lightheartedness for endless fun
The event is in collaboration with King’s Club
And then the “Welcome to the land of colors” Tour sets out again for the Verona area
to reach the Festa grande Santa Viola di Grezzana and thus celebrate mid-August by enjoying the coolness of the mountains among concerts
dancing and good food under a multicolored sky
This festival has been held for more than 40 years in Lessinia
because it shares its values; in addition to fun and entertainment
solidarity is the cornerstone of the Veronese festival. For all info and updates on upcoming Summer Tour stages: www.holitour.it
The festival’s fame is now known to everyone
but few know where this format that inspired the two event managers
During the Indian festival called “Holi” entire peoples of villages in India
Nepal and Pakistan throw bags of colored powder and water balloons at each other to celebrate rebirth and love and the ultimate defeat of evil in favor of good
The occasion falls in spring and carries universal positive messages of friendship
Lazzari and Bari: “The festival we have devised is a vehicle to convey the genuine values of this ancient occasion and
to manifest the solidarity soul that underlies everything and for which we conceived the festival.” In fact
what distinguishes Holi the Festival of Colors from other formats that imitate it on the wave of the phenomenon’s virality is the solidarity purpose
Lazzari and Bari have been raising funds for the Forgotten Brothers Foundation

The Italian coastline between Venice and Trieste is dotted with small towns that swell dramatically into seaside resorts during the summer months
Separated from the rest by the Marano Lagoon
Grado isn’t dramatically different from Caorle
They all boast countless beach chairs along the Adriatic Sea and plenty of sun
For those who aren’t sure whether they want to show a sunlight-starved body in a bikini
because the many tourists from Germany and Austria that come here certainly aren’t
The Germanic visitors aren’t new to this area; Friuli-Venezia Giulia was once a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
And various tribes from north and east were moving through the area much earlier than that with the fall of the Roman Empire
formerly one of the Romans’ most important cities
on display in the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology of the Upper Adriatic
A Roman merchant vessel was found decades ago off the coast
But the museum is a frequent target of scorn from reports that say it’s never open
Much of the city’s core features multistory buildings for commercial and residential use that can be seen in just about any city in the region
A few of the hotels try to stand out architecturally
There are numerous pedestrian streets nicely lined with shady trees where tourists can check out clothes
albeit from a mostly non-Italian clientele
But most don’t come to Grado for the shade or the city blocks
That large concrete barrier serves as a walkway between two main beach areas
The beach to the west features hundreds of lounge chairs for rent
A few more sophisticated ones have nicer chairs and curtains
Daily prices range from 5 euros for a sun chair to 6 euros for an umbrella
But the real indicator about the nature of Grado is that price plans exist not only for weeks or even months
while merchants and residents in nearby Venice complain of day-tripping hordes of tourists

Italy hosted the latest fifth round of the Europe Triathlon Cup series for Elite senior athletes on Sunday
Kudos to Europe Triathlon for getting their product out there
Both events were decided in the final finish straight
with each winner finishing just one second clear of their nearest competitor
The opening 750m (non-wetsuit) swim saw the familiar sight in European events of Bianca Seregni (ITA) leading the way
With just Great Britain’s Sophie Alden for company
they exited the water with a significant lead of 25 seconds
That duo rode together in the early stages before Seregni – a multiple World and European Aquathlon champion through the Junior and Senior ranks – pulled clear and Alden was soon back in that large chase group
but ultimately the collective strength of the chasers would prevail
leaving a huge group descending on T2 together
a leading trio contained two Italian athletes – Carlotta Missaglia and Angelica Prestia – plus Germany’s Selina Klamt
it would be a first Europe Triathlon Cup victory at senior level for one of them
there was a break at the front of the men’s race in the water
With almost the entire field following in a very long line however
capitalising on that was going to be practically impossible on a flat and fast bike course
and led by the hard work of Brits Tom Bishop and Sam Dickinson
the T2 dismount line was a very busy place to be
All down to the run to decide the winner then
Switzerland’s Max Studer powered to the front on the run at what seemed like sprinting pace
Any thoughts that it may have been a reckless move soon evaporated as the European Sprint Champion proved again that he’s the real deal

Familiar terrain but newfound aggression for Portuguese rider
João Almeida was on familiar terrain on stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia
which brought the gruppo through Treviso on its flat run to the finish in Caorle
the Portuguese rider spent a season there with local squad Unieuro Trevigiani
a key waystation on his road to the WorldTour
is the aggression Almeida has shown to get to this point
A consistent rider blessed with a reliable diesel engine – a 'passista scalatore,' in the words of his old Trevigiani manager Marco Milesi when he joined the team as an 18-year-old – Almeida has typically ridden defensively in the high mountains
content to track the accelerations of others
Subscribe to Cyclingnews for the comprehensive Giro d'Italia experience so you'll never miss a moment of our coverage
where Almeida set his UAE Team Emirates squad to work midway up the climb before delivering the stage-winning attack with a shade under 6km to go
they put 25 seconds into Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma)
The man with a reputation for caution had just produced the most telling attack of the Giro to date
The complexion of the days ahead suddenly feels a little different
we saw there was a stretch of 5km at almost 9%
that was the place," UAE Team Emirates directeur sportif Fabio Baldato told Cyclingnews in Caorle
Thomas came back to him there using a big gear
but João made the difference where it was steeper
UAE Team Emirates had signalled their intentions by setting the tempo from midway up Monte Bondone
with Davide Formolo and Jay Vine teeing up Almeida's acceleration on the steepest portion of the ascent
The rough outline of the plan had been sketched beforehand
but its final execution was left to Almeida's judgement
He had the option to call an audible at the line of scrimmage
it was up to João to make the 'call,' so to speak," Baldato said
it was his legs and his head that decided we'd go for it
but we've believed in João from the start
but João has always been a calm guy
A Giro repeatedly billed as a duel – first between Roglič and Remco Evenepoel
and latterly between Roglič and Geraint Thomas – now has the look of a three-way contest as it enters its final
Almeida appeared content to suggest a podium finish would be the summit of his ambition
with three days in the mountains remaining
the Trofeo Senza Fine is clearly within reach
he was reluctant to talk up the idea in Caorle on Wednesday evening
let's find out in Rome," Almeida told Cyclingnews
I'm feeling good and I want to make the most of it
I was very pleased with the results and effort I did after six hours of fast racing
I keep going like this and everything is going to go as smooth as possible."
After two weeks of stalemate among the overall contenders
Almeida's forcing at Monte Bondone created the first real differences in a road stage after crashes
COVID-19 and time trials had accounted for most of the other alterations to the GC before now
that the hierarchy of Monte Bondone would necessarily repeat itself at Val di Zoldo on Thursday or at Tre Cime di Lavaredo on Friday
"It's still very tight between the top three," he said
The strength of Almeida's UAE Team Emirates guard on Tuesday was notable
while the abandon of Pavel Sivakov means that Thomas now has just four riders alongside him to defend his maglia rosa
but Thomas still has two very strong climbers with him in Arensman and De Plus," Baldato said
all that counts is the legs in the climbs."
After his display on Monte Bondone – arguably his most striking since his defiant
solo defence of pink at Piancavallo in 2020 – Almeida will be starting to believe that he has as good a chance as anyone else at withstanding the rigours of the Giro's grandstand finale
He went close as a neophyte three years ago
"It's going to be brutal," Almeida said on Wednesday
the ideal summer beach weekend in Italy would be swimming in a warm blue sea and sunbathing on soft sand
Then there are those who attend and compete in the Roll & Flat Venice Beach Race
Italy isn’t the first place that comes to mind when I think of a thriving car culture
so I was surprised to see a big turnout at this event
the local hot rod club that organizes Roll & Flat
there were 300 cars and bikes signed up for this year’s event at Caorle Eastern Beach
Participants come from all over Europe to take part
but there’s always an especially large contingent from Germany and Austria who make the road-trip across the Alps to this small town near Venice
Beach racing like this is not about speed – it’s about emotion and adrenaline
The race rules for Roll & Flat are simple: whoever’s first to the checkered flag 1/8th of a mile away is the winner
Bikes race against bikes and cars against cars
but bikes look more exciting on a beach: they drift around
and you actually see that riders need to work to succeed
but this year the racing part of the event was restricted to regular street legal tires
The regulations also state that no modern powertrain solutions may be hidden under a vintage suit: pre-’60s American cars with pre-’80s mechanical upgrades is as far as the rules extend
It was cool to see rare beasts like this immaculate 1938 Pontiac out on the beach
90hp from a 2.8L engine was a fine achievement back in the day
Many compare this Italian event to The Race of Gentlemen held in Wilwood
but Roll & Flat is one of a number of popular European beach races worthy of note
Some of the most well-known include the Rømø Motor Festival in Denmark with its 100-year-old traditions
and the Pendine Sands Hot Rod Races in the United Kingdom where speeds famously exceed more than 120mph (193km/h)
I personally think that Roll & Flat is a bit more carefree and fun
While other beach racing events have a strict line when it comes to period-correct dress codes and speed
the Venice Beach Race adds its own Italian flavor
It’s all about style and community rather than winning
Hot rods and custom bikes are the original outlaws on the road
so not following the rules too closely feels far more natural to me
More stories from Italy on Speedhunters
Being American it's always so weird for me
seeing other countries celebrate American cars so enthusiastically
I suppose it must be the same the other way around
I think the first race girl has a Gadsden tattoo on the back of her leg
This event is truly special and has such a unique flavor that everybody in our group agreed that we will go again next year
The friendly atmosphere revolving around the era
vintage cars and in some cases period correct dress combined with Italian lifestyle and food is a perfect combination
You could really tell that everybody loved it
Some people came from far away places like Russia and others strolled over in their swimwear
the event in it's 7th year is still without admission fees and this adds to the special feeling

idk why but I really thought this took place in Venice Beach
and I would've believed it since it gave off west coast vibes

a five-year tradition.Tradition tells that some fishermen found a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child floating in the sea despite it resting on a marble pedestal; only children managed to take it to the Cathedral from which it disappeared the next day
only to be inexplicably found at a later time in the small church on the sea which then took the name of the Church of the Madonna dell’Angelo
The Church can be visited every day during the day in the winter months
During the summer it is open from early morning until 11.00 pm.It is a real procession … at sea with festively decorated fishing boats
bragozzi and boats from all over the neighborhood following the statue of the Madonna dell’Angelo.Every five years
the statue kept in the homonymous church is carried in procession on the caorlina
a rowing boat typical of the Venice lagoon
The procession itinerary winds its way from the Fishing Port
along the internal Rio and the Canale dell’Orologio
and then along the sea until it reaches the church again
A festival that never misses any inhabitant of the Maritime City of Caorle is the Procession of the Madonna dell’Angelo
also familiarly known as MADONNINA DEL MARE
The water procession sees the participation of virtually all the boats in the city
Believers and non-believers compete to find the best place along the banks
where the “Caorlina” with its bright colors and the statue of the Madonna will pass
The procession starts from the fish market area where fishing boats are normally anchored and reaches the sea from the harbor mouth
the statue is then unloaded and brought back on foot to the beautiful church where it will remain for another five years
(The next edition will be on 13th SEPTEMBER 2021 – not to be missed-)
It is a riot of colors and affection for the TRUE symbol of the CITY OF CAORLE
linked to its “Madonnina del Mare” by an amazing affection
You will see children with grandparents and people of all ages celebrating while everywhere you hear the typical song that accompanies the procession
I had the pleasure of accompanying the Madonna dell’Angelo in the 2013 edition
That year the Caorlina did not go out to sea due to adverse weather conditions
At the end of the procession all the participants in the water parade meet in the marina where there is no shortage of local delicacies based on grilled fish and local sweets.Pio Dal Cin (photo Pio Dal Cin)
CAORLE BLUE FLAG 2021The ceremony for awarding the Blue Flags for the year 2021 took place this morning
in live streaming: among the awarded locations there was also Caorle
which for the sixteenth year was confirmed for the excellence of its sea and its services!“This is a recognition
very important – comments the Mayor Luciano Striuli – because it is distinctive of those places that have made environmental quality their flagship
the Blue Flag also guarantees the implementation of high standards related to safety: it is
a further confirmation that Caorle is the right place to spend your holidays and where (re) find that psychophysical well-being that we we all seek
in contact with nature and local traditions
“The Blue Flag is awarded every year by FEE Italia
the Foundation for Environmental Education
to places that meet certain requirements and criteria regarding water quality
environmental management and services and safety on the beach
The requesting localities must possess all the mandatory requirements and the greatest number of those considered “guide”.The first official recognition was obtained from Caorle in 2002
which was followed continuously by all the others until this year
Spanish triathlon legend Mario Mola will begin his 2023 season at the European Duathlon Championships this weekend in Venice-Caorle
The race marks the first European title up for grabs in 2023
with competitors racing over the sprint distance (5km / 20km / 2.5km)
who has struggled over the past three years to find the same form that propelled him to the top of the world for three consecutive seasons between 2016-18
will hope a win in Italy could be the catalyst for a major comeback ahead of the Paris Olympic Games in 2024
Mola still undoubtedly has time left at the top of the sport
who also finished second in the 2019 WTCS series
has since the pandemic had to deal with periods of inconsistency that have prevented him from returning to the top of his game
At the World Triathlon Championship Series level
the Spaniard’s highest finish was 36th at WTCS Hamburg in 2022
with the other three results comprising of two DNF’s and that 39th in Abu Dhabi at the end of last year
is still strong (10th fastest run split at the 2022 Grand Final)
his weakness in the water on the WTCS scene kept being exposed last season by a new crop of athletes
who keep pushing the pace on the swim and the bike
Following his 10th place at the Tokyo Games
Mola made it clear that he intended to continue working towards his dream of an Olympic medal in Paris
“Back home after another Olympic experience
but glad to have raced at a good level once again
Three years ahead to get back to my best version…or did you doubt it
Mola sits 82nd in the Olympic Qualification Rankings
As it stands and based on his form in 2022
Mola will face an uphill battle to qualify for the Games
However, a second place finish at the Valencia World Cup last September
ahead of the likes of Matt McElroy of the USA and most importantly fellows Spaniards Antonio Serrat Seoane
David Castro Fajardo and Roberto Sanchez Mantecon
proves that Mola still has what it takes to be at the front of big races
A 14:22 5km split shows that he has what it takes on the run to win
After becoming a father in 2022 and seemingly relocating back to Spain and switching to a different coaching set up and training environment following the Tokyo Olympics
it’s understandable that consistency was hard to find for Mola last season
The 2022 Valencia World Cup result proved that he can be competitive
and this Saturday’s race in Venice-Caorle will give Mola an opportunity to prove that his bike and run combination is still one to be feared ahead of what looks likely to be an intense period of racing as he chases the Olympic dream for the fourth time
If he successfully qualifies for the Paris Olympics, and goes on to realise his dream of medaling, his achievements over the sprint and olympic distance would stack up well next to those of another Spanish great, Javier Gomez
The men and women’s elite race at the European Duathlon Championships in Venice-Caorle will take place on Saturday, March 18th, with the full start lists and event information available here

Sian Rainsley made an encouraging return from injury with second place at the Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle over the weekend
Last year saw the British athlete perform well at Super League’s Arena Games as well as notch a top 10 at WTCS Hamburg where she was also part of a young winning Mixed Relay team alongside Kate Waugh
But this season started in the worst possible way as she suffered a ruptured anterior talo-fibular ligament and a grade 1 calcaneofibular ligament tear after rolling her ankle in a pot hole on a run
That had left her booted up in January rather than out training but four months on she returned to Italy for the Continental Cup event and made it onto the podium
was part of the break on the bike and then – in what was the big unknown – stayed on strongly on the run to grab the silver medal in an overall time of 57:36
seven seconds behind winner Selina Klamt of Germany
We caught up with her afterwards to hear how it had all gone and find out what’s next
She told us: “My first race of the season is done and in all honesty
It’s hard to have full confidence in your run form when you’ve missed a chunk of it
the plan was to make it as hard a swim-bike race as possible and hopefully get a head start on some of the speedy runners
After a crazy beach start with many dolphin dives
I put my head down and focussed on getting to the buoy first
“The tide and current was insanely strong and definitely made for an extra few meters on the swim as we were being pushed in the wrong direction
I pushed the pace and led for the majority of the 750m – more like 800m – swim but passed on the dolphin dives out by a fellow athlete.”
And the aggressive gameplan continued out of T1
with Rainsley adding: “We mounted our bikes and the field was split which was perfect
A group of four of us had a small lead so we kept the pace on to make the others work
“I was feeling strong so did a lot of the work and even broke away solo for half a lap
now alongside some British teammates for company
We managed to get the gap to over 40 seconds to the group behind which fortunately contained some of the speedy runners I’d be worried about.”
but the moment of truth had arrived: “Sessions have been building nicely but there’s not been lots of them and with only a couple of strides off the bike previous to this race
“A good T2 had set me up nicely and we were running as a group of seven for the first 1.5km
I wasn’t feeling overly confident for a podium at this point
We were taking it in turns to up the pace and one by one
myself and a Belgium athlete [Jolien Vermeylen
who would finish fourth] were also dropped by the flying German athlete [Klamt]
the Spanish athlete [Cecilia Santamaria] managed to join us so now we were running for second
third and fourth and nobody wants to finish fourth
especially when it’s coming down to a sprint finish
I wasn’t taking my chances and surged with around 800m to go and managed to stay clear for second – a way better run than I’d expected!”
And she revealed afterwards that she won’t have to wait long for her next race which takes place in Madrid in the first week in June
adding: “I’m happy to get the season rolling and now looking forward to hopefully building on this towards the European Championships.”
Meanwhile there was a British one-two in the men’s race with World U23 Champion Connor Bentley winning by two from Ben Dijkstra
who in turn was just a second ahead of France’s Valentin Morlec
Caorle is becoming increasingly international
in addition to the classic Europe Triathlon Cup (and Europe Triathlon Junior Cup) Venice – Caorle will also host the European Duathlon Sprint Élite and Age Group Championships and the European Duathlon Classic Age Group Championships
The assignment of Europe Triathlon Union confirms Caorle among the most important locations of the multi-discipline
not only nationally but also internationally
with the most participated stage of the Europe Triathlon Cup ever on European soil
the great competitive success and participation has been confirmed again this year
Porto Santa Margherita will be the location of the European race for the third consecutive year
To enrich the commitment of Silca Ultralite Vittorio Veneto with the support of the Municipality of Caorle
in collaboration with Fitri and under the aegis of Europe Triathlon
the new prestigious assignment of the continental event dedicated to the duathlon (running
the Venetian seaside resort will be at the centre of the triathlon scene
with the top continental duathlon event (reserved for Élite
Age Group and Paraduathletes) and with the important Europe Triathlon Cup
which has now established itself internationally
Much satisfaction from all those involved.“Our work
and our policy of small steps are paying off,” comments Silca Ultralite Vittorio Veneto president Aldo Zanetti
”We started off quietly several years ago
explaining to the administrators of Caorle right from the start that we would
bring beautiful events to an international level
It is a source of pride for us to be held in such high regard by our Federation and by the European one
and we will do everything we can to ensure that those who come to Caorle will be so comfortable that they will leave reluctantly
Our passion and that of all our volunteers will overcome any difficulties that may arise on these occasions from one moment to the next
I am even happier that our Governor sees in us and in Caorle a heritage to safeguard and support
There is a lot of work to be done and together with FITRI and the City of Caorle we must not waste a minute because March is after tomorrow and we must immediately pedal well and hard together to run straight to the goal
“Let’s further strengthen the strong bond that has been created between Caorle and the multi-discipline – comments the Councillor for Sport of the Municipality of Caorle
Mattia Munerotto – in 2023 we will in fact host two of the main events at continental level for the Triathlon and Duathlon disciplines
the Europe Triathlon Cup will return to Porto Santa Margherita and Lido Altanea
Caorle will be the stage for the European Elite and Age Group Duathlon Sprint Championships and the European Age Group Classic Duathlon Championships
These appointments are also important from a promotional point of view because they strengthen our image as a Sports City not only at the Italian level
We are also continuing our more than fruitful collaboration with Silca Ultralite
takes care of the organisation of these prestigious multi-discipline events from a sporting point of view’

Alongside an already busy weekend of racing around the world
the latest Continental Cup event in Europe took place on Saturday at the Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle in Italy
Located a short ferry ride up the Adriatic coast from Venice, this popular event was in its third year and also hosted the first of four ‘Rising Stars’ focussed events in the European Triathlon Junior Cup series
the Europe Triathlon team were putting significantly increased profile
social media coverage and also live stream broadcast to raise awareness and build the profile of their future stars
We had four excellent races – and I was very pleased to be the broadcast commentator for them all
Here’s a wrap on how it all played out
The large entry – this event was a qualifier for the World Junior Championships – meant that this was a two-day semi-finals and finals format
over a super-sprint (300m / 9.5km / 1.9km) distance
Despite only needing to finish top-9 to qualify
Szalai won her heat – the fastest of the day – by a relative country mile
any concerns that her qualification efforts represented tactical naivety were quickly extinguished in the final
she was part of a breakaway group of around 12 that earned themselves a 10-15 second advantage at T2 – and inside the the first 30 seconds of the run she took control and never looked like being challenged
she was racing against high-quality athletes up to four years her senior
several of whom have European and World Championship medals to their name already
With plenty of time to high-five the crowds and enjoy the long finishing straight
‘Rising Stars’ was the branding for this event
Quite appropriate in the case of Fanni Szalai
The last two editions of this race had seen home athlete
provides pressure and expectation – but De Nigro dealt with it in style
and ran to victory once again in what will be his last chance to race in this event as he turns 20 next year
You can be all but certain we’ll see him back 12 months from now in the Senior Elite race
“On the bike we tried to push away immediately and we formed a good group
Nils attacked on the run and I was already struggling… but then on the last few hundred metres I just attacked all the way
and of course Caorle is my favourite race and now I’ve one it three times in a row
12 months ago Germany’s Seline Klamt took bronze here in a sprint finish
but this year she returned to make the race hers
It was an amazing way to start the season.”
The final race of the day was the Senior Men
and it also provided a fourth different nation topping the podium
Arena Games Triathlon London winner, Nicolo Strada, lead the way through the opening 750m swim alongside former European Junior Champion, Henry Graf (GER). Gaps behind were small however, and U23 World Champion
That quartet were joined by Alberto Gonzalez Garcia (ESP)
Alessio Crociani (ITA) and Baptiste Passemard (FRA) as a hard-working group of eight established an advantage of more 48 seconds over the chasers as they arrived at T2
and ultimately the breakaway group would be rewarded with the top eight positions at the finish
Despite losing a couple of seconds through T2
Bentley was soon back towards the front and pushing the pace alongside Dijkstra
Morlec and Corciani in what was turning into a great finale to the day
and seemingly trying to gradually up the pace from a long way out to put the pressure on Dijkstra
rather than leave it until a sprint finish
and Bentley added another win to his 2022 successes in the British Elite Champs and that Abu Dhabi Championship Finals
Bentley commenting post-race that he only knew he had the win “about 30-metres from the finish line!”
“Ben had me racing real honest the whole way
but we’ve seen that British racing is still there for me and Ben
I don’t know if I can hold on to these guys at the front
I was just trying to control my breathing and the second lap I just got into my rhythm and we stretched a little bit away
and then it just seemed to come together for men
I couldn’t ask for a better season opener
There’s a few things I need to take away from this and learn from

The archaeological project ‘Bibione Antica (Venice
Italy)‘ not only focuses on the extensive Roman villa currently under excavation but also delves into the historical context of what was once one of the most significant areas in Northern Italy during the early centuries of the Roman empire
VIEW THE VIDEO OF THE RESEARCH AND FINDINGS (English subtitles):
Watch the video of the research and findings (with English subtitles):
an excavation campaign at the Roman villa of Bibione
specifically at the Mutteron dei Frati site
Beyond the peripheries of the Eastern Venetian lagoons
the geographical scope of the villa extends to what
fell under the dominion of the pivotal city of Concordia Sagittaria (Iulia Concordia)
These excavations not only attest to the villa’s affluence but also underscore its strategic significance
as a hub specializing in weapon production for the Roman empire
involving systematic and stepwise inquiries into the terrain
Scholars from the University of Padua (Professor Maria Stella Busana) and the University of Regensburg
in collaboration with the Superintendence for the Metropolitan Area of Venice (Alessandro Asta)
conducted surveys from November 6 to December 1
targeting specific areas within the municipalities of Caorle and San Michele al Tagliamento
Recovered artifacts reveal traces of productive settlements
and at least one Roman villa near the Alberoni canal
and heating conduits substantiate the discernible comfort of proprietors over an extended epoch
spanning from the Augustan era to late antiquity
Archaeologists elucidate the methodology behind these surveys
including students from various universities
traverse the landscape along parallel trajectories
Concentrations of evidence prompt intensified reconnaissance to document dispersion
geophysical investigations and coring activities facilitate subsurface exploration and reconstruct geomorphological and environmental features
The research includes systematic surface surveys
and geophysical examinations to amass data reconstructing the ancient landscape and understanding historical habitation and utilization patterns
with an active Archaeological Group of volunteers
Roman-era evidence exists in San Michele al Tagliamento and Caorle
Late medieval findings are also documented
the spatial location of ancient ports at the Tagliamento estuaries and settlement dynamics along the coastal stretch remain uncertain
Deciphering settlements along the paleochannels of the Tagliamento and understanding their productive distribution are crucial
Rediscovering the Roman port remains an objective of paramount archaeological significance

Burano is a quiet part of overcrowded Venice.Credit: Alamy
There's a distant clop of feet on stone
a sound that's bouncing off brightly-coloured walls and soaring over tiled rooftops as it gets louder
Here in Burano the streets are ghost-town empty this morning
it's an island at peace but for the urgent thud of those approaching steps
and then suddenly a young man in trousers and a polo shirt
rounds a corner of a narrow alleyway and almost clatters into me as he sprints past
the sound of his feet on stone pavers tapering off like a passing siren as he sprints towards the port
He's running for the vaporetto – one of the Venice area's famous waterbuses – but he's about to miss it and
strolling past as the only people awake at this time of morning were getting ready to board and make their way into the big city
Laundry day at one of the colourful houses on Burano island.Credit: Alamy
Once that first vaporetto has cast off lines and chugged away
its charmingly wonky belltower silent in the pastel morning glow
My early-morning access to this lovely little place is thanks to another
quite different boat: a live-aboard vessel that's bobbing on its moorings a few hundred metres away in a shallow canal
I arrived here yesterday under its steam; I'll depart this afternoon in the same fashion
Burano is just part of a much wider exploration of the Venice area
a week-long self-drive cruise with the company Le Boat in the company of my partner and our nine-month-old son
A Gelati shop in the Venetian village of Burano
I've come to realise over the past six or seven days
This is how to avoid being one of the tens of thousands of package tourists disgorged onto that busy island on a daily basis
This is how to lessen your impact on a destination that's struggling to cope
how to spread your tourist dollars and your physical presence around to the smaller towns and islands that were also settled by the Venetians
This is how to see the waterways that connect the dots
how to explore the lifelines of the Venetian republic
how to take charge of your itinerary and your destiny and your life
It's 7am and I'm the only tourist on this beautiful Venetian island
It's too early for the day-trippers to arrive from Venice
It's too soon for those few who've scored a bed in a B&B here to venture outside
to grab coffee from cafes that won't open until at least 9am
to wander streets that won't come alive until much later
Table soccer on the beachfront promenade at Lido de Jesolo
Burano in the late evening and the early morning
after the last vaporetto and before the first
is a strange thing: a tourist-free Venetian paradise
a charm-soaked town where no Instagram-inspired visitors roam
an island of canals that contain no gondolas
This lovely little island with the riotously coloured houses is
where local life ebbs and flows around you like the tides
as fishermen putter past in their little boats
as nonnas gather below windows hung with laundry to catch up on the news
The system of canals between Precenicco and Venice.Credit: SMH Graphics
We'd arrived to begin our cruise in the town of Precenicco
a blink-and-you'll-miss-it village in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy
but it provides ideal access to a network of canals
rivers and channels that eventually link up with the Venetian Lagoon some 50 kilometres south-west
The way we'll get there is by boat: specifically
a live-aboard vessel with room for far more than just the three of us (though nine-month-olds do have a surprisingly large footprint)
It's unseasonably cold in Precenicco today
My partner's sunhat and bikini are looking like sadly ironic inclusions
They take their safety briefing and cast off
making their way down the River Stella towards the Marano Lagoon
a sprawling body of water on the pathway to Venice
we'll run aground in the shallow lagoon; tomorrow
wintry weather – the sort of storms houseboats have no business going out in
It will be day three before we eventually begin our adventure
Such is life when you depend on the weather
There's a pleasure to piloting your own vessel that's hard to describe
watching as Precenicco disappears behind a bend in the river and farms and vineyards appear around another
The towering Dolomites that mark the beginning of Austria and Slovenia are a brilliant white smudge on the distant horizon
Scenery oozes past like molasses; there's time to watch swans paddle by serenely
to wave to farmers as they raise their heads at the sound of our boat
The sight of the vastness of the Marano Lagoon ahead warms the soul
a place founded by Romans and developed by Venetians
one of the most important hubs for the latter republic
It takes the best part of a few days to get here
days we spend motoring from wide lagoon to narrow canal
from fast-flowing river to sluggish channel
when the riot of colour that is the Venetian landscape reveals itself
Fields of linseed are laid out in buttery yellow blankets; the scarlet splash of poppies gives the riverbanks an impressionist's flair; wildflowers appear in every hue
A low bridge just outside Caorle has to be swung open for us to pass
forcing road traffic to pause as we make our leisurely way past the fishing boats and recreational craft moored on the riverbanks
and motor into the marina to tie up for the night and explore
Caorle is strikingly reminiscent of Venice
more personal version of that famous island
where the architecture is so familiar – brightly coloured old houses crowded around labyrinthine paths
The haphazard shape of those alleys is recognisable
because they were once canals just like Venice
only here the decision was made to fill them in and pave them over long ago
it's not difficult to imagine that these streets are the waterways of old
Blink and Caorle's wide main boulevard becomes its Grand Canal; squint and its narrow alleyways hold gondolas and other little watercraft
It's like you're walking on water
Venice is of course an important destination for us to visit on this trip
It makes you realise the island city is not a singularity
but the most spectacular piece of a much larger and more impressive whole
Soon it's time to discover more of that legacy
We cast off from Caorle the next morning and join the Canale Revedoli
a manmade artery that leads through a jigsaw puzzle of fields and groves
those snow-capped Dolomites still lurking on the horizon
We pass through small Venetian towns such as Torre di Fine and Revedoli
before making a turn onto the wide Piave River and motoring upstream past Eraclea and San Dona di Piave
These are settlements you'd never normally see – remnants of the Venetian Republic that thrive today in modern Italy
There's the odd bit of challenging boating to get through them
with swing bridges and narrow locks to negotiate
but I manage to guide our boat through without incident
There's a problem still to come today though
The swing bridge at Caposile is out of action; the bridge-keeper crosses his arms in front of him to let us know from afar
We're forced to take a detour down a meandering branch of the Sile River towards the beach resort town of Jesolo
where we'll tie up near a lock for the night
ready to finally enter the Venetian Lagoon the following morning
The Venetian Lagoon covers 55,000 hectares
but that doesn't mean you can take a boat wherever you like in that vast expanse
Most of the lagoon is mud flats and tidal shallows
where water is knee deep at best - hence the canals and the network of channels that runs in a pattern like shattered glass
watching huge flocks of flamingos feeding in the shallows next to the narrow canal as I guide our boat through
Up until this morning we'd been passing maybe one boat a day
going hours and hours without seeing a single vessel
as well as fishing boats and other commercial craft
From there we'll take a vaporetto into Venice to explore some of its quieter corners
to step away from Piazza San Marco and the Grand Canal and to discover just how easy it is to find the "real" Venice when you don't follow the crowds
to enjoy strolling its paved pedestrian streets once the sun has dipped below the horizon
when the day-trippers have all gone and the locals have reclaimed their home
There are a few more days on the water ahead
past spectacular old villas and waterways languidly draped with tree branches
and then on to the houseboat base in the town of Lughignano

This medieval city is only a stone's throw from Venice
and yet it receives a mere fraction of the visitors
because people are missing a lively university town filled with bustling piazzas
ancient marketplaces and several cathedrals with stunning Renaissance-era frescoes
Asolo is known as the "town of 100 vistas" thanks to the spectacular views the town affords
There's plenty of interest on the ground
a rambling set of villas and mansions that for centuries have drawn writers and artists to call this place home
There's an understated charm to Portogruaro and its twin town of Concordia Sagittaria
two small settlements on the banks of the Lemene River
Both are quiet communes with plenty of Venetian history
including a series of spectacular palaces in Portogruaro
and the Cathedral of St Stephen in Concordia
This famous city was once a stronghold of the Venetian Republic
a fortified trading post that became a cultural hub
Though it's best known for its Roman amphitheatre and its Shakespearian associations
there are plenty of Venice-era attractions to be found
The most obvious doppelganger of the city of Venice is the island next door: Murano
The Delphin II is small-ship cruising at its finest, a luxury vessel with only 14 cabins, which means you'll be exploring the Peruvian Amazon with only 28 passengers sharing the experience. How do you avoid burning fuel? Sails. And the three tall ships in the Star Clippers fleet have a lot of them, enough to switch the engines off entirely for 70 per cent of their time at sea. The ships also have small capacities, use water purification to turn sea water into drinking water, and have been awarded the International Air Pollution Prevention certificate. See starclippers.com
It's not easy keeping passenger numbers low when it comes to visiting Antarctica – after all, no one fancies crossing the Drake Passage in a dinghy. However, G Adventures' purpose-built ship, the G Expedition, has a capacity of only 134 guests, all of whom can participate in citizen science projects and on-board education programs. The Savannah is a floating boutique hotel, a river barge with a capacity of only seven passengers that chugs up and down the charming Canal du Midi in southern France. Cruising doesn't get much more intimate. With much of the produce served on board sourced from the Languedoc area, it also provides support for local communities. See savannah-barge.com
Peregrine Adventures has a range of excellent small-ship cruises throughout the world, and this is one of the best: eight days around the islands of Indonesia aboard the 48-passenger Panorama II. Newark Triathlon Club put the town on the map on the contingent after three of their athletes performed extremely well in the European Duathlon Championships in Caorle
Pam Dutton led the charge as she secured a win in the 65-69 years-old women's category
Sharon Clee in the 45-49 women's finished tenth
while Bob White in the 65-69 men's came 12th
The trio initially had to register their interest to qualify for the championships with British Triathlon last year
they had to attend at least one of three qualifying races and achieve a qualifying time
Derbyshire in September last year and received their place in the GB age group team
It was an impressive achievement for the three as only 20 places were available in each age category
and Sharon train weekly at the YMCA running track in Newark with Newark Triathlon Club and have been cycling together at weekends
All three have had to overcome various running-related injuries in the past few weeks and months but were able to make the competition
Italy last Thursday with their bikes and cycled the bike route on Friday to familiarise themselves with the course along with approximately 300 other cyclists
2.5km run) saw ideal conditions for competitors as they undertook the event.
