and alumni of the diocesan seminary of Rome
on the eve of the feast day of their patroness
The Capranica College is the oldest Roman college
founded in the 15th century by Cardinal Domenico Capranica
and forms seminarians mostly from Rome and the rest of Italy
and students in the Clementine Hall on Monday
Pope Francis noted that this diversity embodies the universal and multifaceted nature of the Holy People of God
“Don’t forget the holy faithful People of God
and don’t forget what theology says: the holy faithful People of God are ‘infallible in credendo’.”
Recalling that the name attributed to the College “Almo” means “that which nourishes” or “that which gives life” in ancient Italian and referencing a passage from Dante Alighieri’s 'Divine Comedy'
the Pope likened the Roman seminary to a nourishing environment that sustains spiritual growth
provided iits students remain focused and do not stray from their vocation
one can be ‘well-nourished’ if one does not lose one’s way by ‘wandering aimlessly’,” he said.
Central to his reflection was the need for priests and seminarians to maintain four essential relationships: with God
ensure ministers do not “wander aimlessly” in their journey of faith
The Pope also urged them to fully embrace synodality already in their formation
heeding the recent Synod’s call for spiritual renewal
and a more participatory and missionary Church attuned to the needs of all
Thanking the College for its liturgical contributions to the Papal Basilica of St
he further called on them to show the same “closeness” to the people they minister in the liturgy
"There is no Christian liturgy if the gestures we perform are not matched by a life of faith
which serves as a concrete expression of Christian love
This service to the poor and marginalized helps avoid losing sight of their mission
emphasizing the importance of a personal relationship with the poor
“It is not so much the alms that are important
Pope Francis invoked the intercession of Mary Salus Populi Romani (Protectress of the Roman People) and St

the Allies began arriving in Rome to free the capital from the Nazi grip
the Capranica-Civitavecchia-Orte railroad continued its operations undaunted
although it was limited to a reduced flow of passengers and freight
The conflict involved the railroad in wartime actions by the Allies aimed at destroying bridges in order to hinder the retreat of German troops
The bridge that spanned the Mignone River suffered a devastating aerial bombardment that compromised one of the masonry arches
making it impossible for trains to pass through until 1947
From the 1950s the railways began to consider it as a marginal sector
reducing the number of daily runs and maintenance activities
a landslide crossed the Civitavecchia-Capranica section
many were the proposals for a restoration that was never carried out.Today
or retrace it along a very popular trekking route
to be traveled on foot or on a mountain bike
which runs along the route of the old railroad and has become something of a hiking classic for locals
traveling with difficulty and exploring the world from the window
admiring centuries-old olive trees and getting off from time to time
The railway ran through one of the richest areas from an archaeological point of view in the entire region of Latium
The most significant historical evidence belongs to the Etruscan civilization
but there are also traces of life during the Roman and medieval eras
the Scaglia: an Etruscan necropolis dating from the 6th-5th centuries B.C
in which simple single-chamber burial tombs show structures fashioned to house beds and funerary objects
Continuing for another fifteen kilometers we would arrive at Palano - Ripa Maiale
The Palano area has revealed a rich collection of artifacts dating back to the Middle Paleolithic
testifying to the presence of ancient populations between 200,000 and 35,000 years ago
preserved mainly at the Allumiere Civic Museum
include tools made by chipping siliceous limestone
one can observe cave shelters and under rock shelters that were probably adapted and used by archaic populations
founded by Pope Leo IV in 853 to offer refuge to the inhabitants who fled Centumcellae after the Saracen invasion
it dominated the Mignone valley to the sea
It was probably an inhabited center even in Roman times
it had about 800 inhabitants and relied on agriculture
animal husbandry and to a small extent fishing
the construction of the Civitavecchia - Capranica - Orte railway in 1928 destroyed one of its churches and left signs of its fortified towers and walls
Pre-Unitarian Italy had a railway history characterized by significant delays compared to industrialized nations such as France and England
The Unstoppable Industrial Revolution exerted pressure for accelerated modernization of states
promoting the adoption of liberal structures and technological progress
remained largely confined to the former Lombardy-Venetia Kingdom when the Unification of Italy was achieved
A close look at the political and economic landscape of the time reveals the contrast between Risorgimento ideals and conservative forces
represented in particular by the Papal States
the railroad not only symbolized technological progress but also embodied the ideals of national unity and independence
proposals for the establishment of a railroad network in the ecclesiastical state had been submitted to Pope Gregory XVI
with the aim of connecting important cities such as Rome and Civitavecchia
these proposals met with hostility from conservative clergy
who saw modernization as a threat to their traditions and power
Things changed significantly with the ascension to the papacy of Pius IX in 1849
His willingness to explore new frontiers and embrace change was manifested when he accepted King Ferdinand II of Bourbon’s invitation to personally experience the train on the Naples-Portici line
This symbolic gesture not only marked a turning point in relations between the Church and technological progress
but also laid the groundwork for a significant change in attitudes toward the railroad as an engine of modernization
Pius IX’s trip aboard the train and his visit to the locomotive factory at Pietrarsa represented a bold step toward the adoption of railway technology
and the event marked the beginning of a process of slow but necessary open-mindedness and adaptation to the demands of modernity
paving the way for new opportunities for connection
economic development and social transformation
that the idea was born to build a transversal line that would connect the ports of Civitavecchia and Ancona
was not presented until 1907 by Valentino Peggion and Nicola Petrucci with the help of engineer Carlo Carega
and the line would have grafted onto the pre-existing Capranica- Ronciglione line
Construction work on the Civitavecchia - Capranica - Orte began in 1922 and from the very beginning there were endless problems about the accidentality and quality of the terrain to be crossed
which led to its closure after World War II
It was noticed from its inauguration in 1929 that this would not be a railway line destined for greatness
and it was precisely because of the terrain so uneven and clayey that it was preferred to handle only local passenger and freight traffic
it was decided to discontinue First Class travel
the flow of passengers was mainly delineated as a fabric of rural commuting
arising from the railroad’s inescapable need to cross and join isolated regions where the lack of roads was an undeniable fact
It took a full 10 years after the operational start of the railway line for work to finally get underway to give shape to the much-needed electrification project
which had already been envisioned in the 1917 alternative plan
the implementation of these works resulted only in the creation of a high-voltage power line connecting Civitavecchia to Orte
runs parallel and often a short distance from the railroad
along with local facilities designed to accommodate the electrical substations at Monteromano and Capranica
The aspiration for modern rail electrification
resulted in a limited reality that only highlighted the challenges and complexities involved in implementing an advanced and sustainable transportation system
Following its intricate historical patterns will now make it easier to continue the journey and get back on that train
We could imagine getting off at Allumiere station where
It is the oldest sanctuary in the Tolfa Mountains
Augustine stayed here for a long time during the period when he composed his second Rule and began writing “De Trinitate.”
A little further on our route will open up La Farnesiana
a hamlet developed around a water mill built in the 16th century in the Campaccio valley
it was inhabited by religious men who also ran the mill
the hamlet and mill were abandoned and later became a farm to produce grain and raise livestock for miners working in the nearby quarries
The church of Santa Maria della Farnesiana was built in 1836 and then dedicated to the Immaculate Conception in 1877
The village has retained its original appearance
but the church is now in ruins and in danger of collapse
One will have to continue for another long kilometers
precisely 23 from the first station of departure
Located on a tuffaceous stronghold overlooking the Mignone River
this site has evidence dating back to the Neolithic and continuing into the Bronze Age
The settlement was abandoned around 1300 because of the plague
Luni was the subject of systematic excavations by the Swedish Institute in the 1960s and includes finds such as a hut carved into the tuff and ancient graffiti on a cave
It also offers an extraordinary panoramic view of the Mignone River valley
which began as an Etruscan town and became a Roman municipality that played a very important role between Longobard Tuscia and Rome
It continued to have relevance in the Middle Ages
which crossed the Via Clodia over the Biedano ditch
dating back 2,500 years and built of dry-walled peperino blocks
and it is precisely because of this millennia-old solidity that it would seem to have been built by the devil himself
we would soon find ourselves in Barbarano Romano
which has a medieval settlement enclosed between the Biedano ditch and one of its tributaries and retains its original urban appearance
while an ancient fortification protects its undefended side
among different histories and places connected thanks to this stretch of railroad ends
the explorer may think of actually carrying it out

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to look for a new, simple, and fast method of assessing and monitoring indoor race performance and to assess the relationship between 20 s, 60 s, and 2000 m indoor rowing performances of youth rowers to evaluate their anaerobic profile.
Results: Mean power decreased with increasing test duration (W20 = 525.1 ± 113.7 W; W60 = 476.1 ± 91.0 W; W2000=312.9 ± 56.0 W) and negative correlations emerged between t2000 (418.5 ± 23.1 s) and W20 (r = −0.952, p < 0.0001) and W60 (r = −0.930, p < 0.0001).
Conclusion: These findings indicate that W20 and W60 are significant predictors of 2000 m rowing ergometer performances. Furthermore, normalized W20 and W60 can be used to evaluate athletes and as a reference for planning anaerobic training sessions, on a rowing ergometer.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to look for a new
and fast method of assessing and monitoring indoor race performance and to assess the relationship between 20 s
and 2000 m indoor rowing performances of youth rowers to evaluate their anaerobic profile
17 young able-bodied male rowers (15.8 ± 2.0 years)
and W2000) and 2000 m time (t2000) were considered for the analysis
14 athletes (15–18 years) performed a 20 s
and 2000 m tests and used this as a control group
To define the anaerobic profile of the athletes
W20 and W60 were normalized as percentages of W2000
Associations between variables were determined by means of the Pearson correlation coefficient (r)
Results: Mean power decreased with increasing test duration (W20 = 525.1 ± 113.7 W; W60 = 476.1 ± 91.0 W; W2000=312.9 ± 56.0 W) and negative correlations emerged between t2000 (418.5 ± 23.1 s) and W20 (r = −0.952
p < 0.0001) and W60 (r = −0.930
Conclusion: These findings indicate that W20 and W60 are significant predictors of 2000 m rowing ergometer performances
normalized W20 and W60 can be used to evaluate athletes and as a reference for planning anaerobic training sessions
coaches often make use of standardized indoor rowing tests to monitor the effects of their training plans
and are also included in the Youth Olympic Games
The aim of this study was to look for a new method
of assessing and monitoring indoor race performance and to investigate the relationship between the fixed-time 20 s and 60 s all-out tests and the fixed-distance 2000 m indoor rowing performance in youth athletes
this work will test the hypothesis that mean power performance during 20 s and 60 s all-out tests could predict the 2000 m performance of youth rowers
The institutional review board of the University of Palermo approved the within-subjects experimental design
which included 17 male youth (age: 15.8 ± 2.0 years; height 176.1 ± 7.8 cm; body mass: 70.9 ± 10.0 kg) rowers affiliated to the Italian Rowing Federation and finalists in the Italian Men’s Junior Rowing Championship (15–18 years)
an independent sample of 14 youth rowers (15–18 years) was considered to cross-validate the findings of the experimental sample
After a detailed explanation of the nature and purpose of the study
written informed consent to participation was obtained from the athletes and their parents before the commencement of the study
Athletes had at least three 3) years of previous rowing training consisting of 18–20 h week−1 according to the recommendations of the Italian Rowing Federation FIC
13 older male high-level athletes (21.1 ± 0.8 years) performed similar 20 s
the results of which were used to preliminarily assess whether the tests can be applied to athletes of a different age group
During the pre-competitive period of the 2019–2020 season
the experimental period included three sessions
with a “rest day” in-between
during which the participants were required to perform a 20 s
Participants were habituated to these tests
routinely administrated during the season by their coach
body mass and stature were measured by means of a stadiometer and an electronic scale (SECA
This was followed by a 15-min standard warm-up eliciting ∼140 beats·min−1
the rowers received verbal encouragement from their coach to perform their best
The tests were performed on a Concept2 rowing ergometer (mod
fitted with a PM5 monitor) with a 120-drag factor
where 1 W = 1 J s−1 and the 2000 m performance time (t2000
Absolute W20 and W60 values were normalized relative to body weight
m.s−1) of the 2000 m performance was also calculated
The same sequence was used in the counter-test group
a stepwise regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between V2000
to plot the anaerobic profile of the youth rowers
absolute W20 and W60 values were expressed as percentages of W2000
Correlation between 2000 m rowing ergometer performance time (t2000) and anaerobic characteristics of the 17 participants
are the findings from preliminary tests on a cohort of older athletes
The relationship between the 2000 m performance time (t2000) and mean power (W20) during the 20 s all-out test
The relationship between the 2000 m performance time (t2000) and mean power (W60) during the 60 s all-out test
Anaerobic power profiles of the 17 youth athletes expressed through the percentages of the mean power W20 and W60 during the 20 and 60s tests with respect to the 2000m actual performance
The measured W20 and W60 values of the 13 additional older volunteers (mean age 21.1 ± 0.8) and the percentage difference between the achieved 2000m event speed and model predicted speed for a 2000m event
The main findings of this study were the definition of 1) the mathematical model to predict actual 2000 m indoor rowing performance and 2) the anaerobic profile of youth rowers. Furthermore, this study substantiates the significant correlation between average power outputs of 20 and 60 s (Cataldo et al., 2015; Cerasola et al., 2020)
and the time to complete 2000 m indoor rowing performance
More specifically, W20 and W60 resulted in the most significant variables for predicting t2000, probably due to the relevant combined contribution of the alactacid and lactacid anaerobic metabolisms, respectively (Jensen, 1994). According to Steinacker (1993)
senior elite athletes compete in a typical rowing race in the single scull reach a mean power of 450–600 W during the first 10 s of the initial phase and 400–500 W during the 60 s of the final phase
youth athletes reached similar mean power values during the 20 s (e.g.
340–690 W) and 60 s tests (e.g.
which substantiate their good athletic level
Finally, with respect to the literature (Cosgrove et al., 1999; Riechman et al., 2002; Cataldo et al., 2015; Cerasola et al., 2020) the integration of W20 and W60 in the mathematical model for the prediction of 2000 m speed provides a better evaluation of performance (e.g.
< 3% error) and further evidence on the relevance of testing anaerobic capacity of youth athletes
Before concluding it is important to highlight the strengths and limitations of the present work
The main strengths of this work are the novelty and implications of the findings which are of significant practical importance within the context of rowing federations and clubs as monitoring tests and talent identification
the anaerobic power curve shown in this study could help the coaches to define different levels for anaerobic intensities
to monitor the effectiveness of their training plan
and to identify and promote talents by predicting athletic success in 2000 m competitions (Maestu et al.
In considering that this study is limited to the peculiar sample of finalists in the Italian Men’s Junior Rowing Championship
further studies are needed to verify whether these tests are useful for the evaluation of youth rowers of different athletic levels
with coaches ranking athletes on the team in a controlled environment
The findings of this study not only provided valuable insights into the evaluation of the anaerobic capability of youth athletes but also a good prediction model for their 2000 m speed performances
coaches should consider the 20 and 60 s all-out tests also for talent identification and progress
considered to be complementary approaches to measure rowing performance and the rowing community has not yet determined which of these might be more valuable
particularly in view of the fact athletes often take part in different types of events
It is thus essential that future studies would also look at the peak power
as well as other variables which could be predictable through the quick 20 and 60 s tests
it is envisaged that such limitations can be addressed through further studies and tests
ideally conducted by independent researchers
particularly in view of the fact that a major strength of this work is the relative simplicity to carry out the proposed 20 and 60 s tests
their role in the talent identification process and as a monitoring tool
and their ability to make accurate and fast predictions
or creating anxiety hence allowing more time/rigorous training to follow within the same session and
This makes them ideal for routine monitoring of athletes: a 20 s all-out row will practically go unnoticed and is hardly going to make an impact on the rest of the training session
the 20- and 60-s tests could be a valuable tool to routinely assess youth athletes during training sessions
they could be considered a more feasible and accurate option to predict 2000 m performances with respect to the assessment VO2max
the proposed mathematical model could offer coaches a simple workout to propose to athletes to predict their performance
with a frequency greater than the test of 2000 m that is not commonly used in training due to the great effort required

When professors Dick O’Brien, Thomas Eisner and William Keeton were first thinking about creating Cornell’s Department of Neurobiology and Behavior (NBB) in 1964
Although the culture of collaboration runs deep at Cornell
when it comes to combining people from different departments into a brand new academic unit
But an external committee reporting to Cornell President James Perkins had found that research and teaching in biology was fragmented
That group recommended a new unit with a new vision
“We knew that neuroscientists understood behavior
but there was a need to fortify their education in the building blocks of behavior,” said Thomas Seeley
“This required including faculty based in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who studied what animals do when living in nature
the tools for neuroscience come from engineering
so a natural home for other members of the NBB faculty was the College of Arts and Sciences.”
the department remains “shared” by the two colleges
the study of behavior typically done in zoology and psychology departments with the study of neurobiology
which at that time was taught mainly in medical schools
“We used to hire people with specialties in only one area
but now we were hiring people who could talk to both behaviorists and neurobiologists,” Adler said
This experiment that became a new type of department has been a success
with other universities using Cornell as a model for their academic reorganizations
and many graduates of the Cornell program using their degrees in professions as diverse as academia
The department will celebrate its 50th anniversary by welcoming doctoral alumni to a Nov
About half of the department’s former students
which include more than 200 doctoral students

I was working as a research technician in psychiatric research at Harvard Medical School
but spending my weekends birding and reading books on ethology by Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen,” Zakon said
moment’ for me was reading an article by Mark Konishi about a new field called ‘neuroethology,’ which showed me that I could unite my interests in neurobiology and animal behavior
This article talked about the work of people like Tom Eisner
so I decided I had to go to Cornell to pursue my passion.”
it combined faculty from the departments of biochemistry
Only later did faculty in psychology and conservation join the lineup at NBB
“NBB was a model for me on how to integrate and move seamlessly between levels of organization in biological systems,” Zakon said
“What I learned in NBB was the value of vertical integration and to have the confidence to move into a new area
NBB made me see that staying bound by a technical approach is very intellectually limiting.”

CHATHAM - The United States’ weekend killing of Osama bin Laden led to a discussion of justice in a Glenwood High School classroom Monday
Students in teacher Steve Welch’s American government course have been studying two films about the War on Terror
“Fahrenheit 9/11” by filmmaker Michael Moore
the War on Terror and its coverage in the media
“FahrenHYPE 9/11” is a documentary released the same year that challenges Moore’s documentary
“Students want something that’s reasonable
How is it that this is being referred to as justice?”
the two dozen seniors – who were in elementary school when the Twin Towers were hit on Sept
2001 – discussed whether it was appropriate to celebrate bin Laden’s death
reactions to President Barack Obama’s speech Sunday night and finally
said he believes the killing was “something that definitely needed to be done.” He said he remembers hearing about the Sept
“They didn’t really tell us about it at school,” Anderson said
“My mom was kind of worried and kept me inside for a bit
I didn’t really understand what was going on at the time
said the killing was a “big turning point.”
that it definitely gives a lot of people hope,” Lex said
“People might have been starting to think that troops were there for no good reason
I feel like we’re going to have more people willing to go into the military knowing that stuff is actually being done.”
said he has mixed feelings about the death
it’s just exciting more anger and dedicating his people even more to his cause,” Capranica said
He said bin Laden’s death will make America safer
not so much for the fact that we killed him
but that we would be safer because of that,” Walters said
but it’s also about the fact that it’s closure for 9/11.”
A handful of Glenwood students carried American flags through the halls during the day Monday
An outside investigation into former Springfield Park District Police Capt
Jonathan Davis released Friday revealed nine allegations of misconduct but ultimately recommended he be returned to active duty with a remediation plan
resigned Wednesday after being on paid administrative leave since Jan
park district officials had not disclosed the nature of the allegations that led to Davis' paid suspension — none of which were criminal
Springfield Park Board President Leslie Sgro said
The park board discussed the investigation for about an hour Friday behind closed doors before releasing the 14-page investigation
conducted by Jeffrey Wilday of law firm Brown
focused on the allegations and not Davis' recent comments
claimed he was forced out in retaliation for "speaking out against racism and corruption," and he added that being on leave caused "un-repairable damage to my reputation in the professional law enforcement community and the public eye."
has filed complaints with the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Sgro said Friday that she "strongly disagreed" with Davis' categorization of being forced out in retaliation
"We have zero tolerance for any unfair treatment of any employee," she said
The outside investigation pointed to Davis' removal from the Fraternal Order of Police union in September as a key turning point in his behavior and relationship with park district administration
believed he was removed from the police union so he could be fired more easily
Park district administration maintained that the reason was because
he was an administrator and therefore wasn't eligible to be in the union
Here is a closer look at the nine allegations against Davis:
* Improperly conducted the destruction of evidence and property stored in the police department's evidence room
Wilday wrote that the destruction of evidence was the most serious
Davis directed park district officer Nick Capranica to destroy all evidence stored by the department for the years 2004
along with drugs and other contraband found in the parks not associated with any criminal cases
because the evidence room needed to cleaned out
Davis opted to burn the items in a trash barrel located outside the park district police headquarters in Washington Park
Capranica questioned Davis about the propriety of destroying evidence without the approval of the Sangamon County state's attorney's office
Davis said he tried to reach the state's attorney and believed he had done his "due diligence."
The investigation found that park district police didn't have a policy regarding the destruction of evidence or property
Davis elaborated on the allegation in a phone interview Friday
saying it had been past practice by former park police chiefs to destroy evidence by placing it in a garbage can and having it crushed
He also pointed out that the burning occurred on a cold day in January when nobody was at Washington Park
"I didn't want to take the chance of having an evidence bag fly out of a garbage truck," he said
"It's not uncommon for police departments to burn things."
* Failure to secure police department firearms
While Davis was suspended for 10 days on Jan
11 for failing to monitor a park ranger's time cards
patrol officers found a number of weapons in his office that were not locked in the department's gun cabinet
Davis confirmed that there were four or five "military rifles" in his office
He said the guns were part of a federal lease program with the U.S
He added that the guns were technically not property of the department
and the guns didn't have ammunition with them
an email written by a patrol officer contradicted parts of Davis' account
handguns and boxes of ammunition were found in the office
There were also boxes of ammunition to the rifles Davis referenced
But the investigation found that Davis didn't violate any rules because the department did not have a policy that addressed securing weapons
* Failed to wear his captain's uniform on a regular basis
Patrol officers said Davis regularly wore a golf shirt and khaki pants while on duty rather than his uniform
Davis said he stopped wearing his uniform regularly when he was removed from the union representing park district police officers
although officers interviewed disputed that statement
Davis said the reason he wore business casual clothes was because he was limited by administration to being on patrol no more than 20 percent of the time
officers regarded Davis adversely for his decision to not wear his uniform
* Failed to log in to Sangamon County Central Dispatch while on duty
Davis rarely logged in to the Sangamon County Central Dispatch system after he was removed from the union
Sangamon County dispatch is a hub of law enforcement activity by which dispatchers know which officers are on duty as well as their availability to answer calls for assistance
Davis said he felt logging in to the system created a burden on dispatchers because they were required to periodically check on him and he wasn't always available as an administrator
He also said it wasn't important for dispatchers to be able to reach him because he was rarely on patrol
* Failed to respond promptly to inquiries from park district patrol officers
Park district patrol officers described Davis as someone who did not want to be bothered unless it was absolutely necessary
officers felt a text message was preferred over a phone call
Davis said he wanted his patrol officers to be as self-reliant as possible and that he wanted officers to call with proposed solutions and not questions of what to do
Davis also said officers usually communicated through text messages and that he did not carry his phone with him at all times
* Failed to perform in a professional manner appropriate for the commanding officer of a police department
The investigation found that Davis did not take the decision to be removed from the union well and viewed it as the park district wanting to fire him
Davis allegedly "violently" pried his nameplate off his office door
Patrol officers told Wilday they found it inconsistent to be disciplined by a fellow union member
was that Davis would lock his officer door every time he left
Davis confirmed he always locked his door because he did not want officers viewing any confidential documents on his desk
* Regularly failed to report for duty in a timely manner or remain on duty through the end of his normal workday
Patrol officers interviewed said Davis frequently reported for duty after 8 a.m
and left the office before the beginning of the 3 p.m
Wilday wrote that it was impossible to know if that was the case because he couldn't cross-check it with central dispatch since Davis rarely logged in
Wilday found that before being removed from the union
Davis reported for duty on time and completed his shifts
Davis said Friday that he would regularly adjust his schedule because he would have to often work in the evenings
* Failed to cooperate with park district administration
Park district executive director Derek Harms and attorney Justin Reichert said Davis had a history of being uncooperative since 2013
when he was told the park district's police force would be reduced by attrition because of budget issues
Davis said he was upset that Harms let officers come to him with issues
which undermined his authority as commanding officer
the reason officers went to Harms was because they felt tension with Davis and didn't believe he'd listen to them
* Failed to effectively lead and command the park district's police department
Wilday did not provide any additional details on this allegation

Baby songbirds learn to sing through trial and error by imitating their fathers
but how exactly do chick brains know when they are hitting the right notes
finds that the brain chemical dopamine plays an active role in “teaching” young birds to sing
Previous research has shown that an increase in dopamine activity reinforces actions that yield rewards – such as when a monkey presses on a lever and receives food or juice – cuing the brain to repeat that action
when a monkey presses the lever and expects a reward but doesn’t get it
that disappointment causes dopamine levels to decrease
no one has known whether dopamine reinforces learning in tasks where an animal must evaluate whether an action matches an internal goal
“When you are practicing piano and you play the right note
does your brain signal that note in the same way as when you’re thirsty and you get delicious juice
this is the case,” said the paper’s senior author Jesse Goldberg
Capranica Fellow in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior
a postdoctoral researcher in Goldberg’s lab
the researchers first had to trick a singing zebra finch into thinking it made a mistake
If the bird sang a tune that went “abcd,” the researchers altered the tune so it sometimes heard ”abcc.” Next
the researchers recorded the activity from single dopamine neurons while the bird practiced its song
The experiments revealed that when birds hit the right note
when the bird recognized that it sang the wrong note
the disappointing outcome led to a drop in dopamine levels
Because the anatomy of the dopamine system is basically the same in birds and humans
the study may have important implications for motor and speech learning in humans
“This is the first demonstration that dopamine evaluates the quality of nonreward-related motor performance,” Goldberg said
“Therefore the findings raise the possibility that dopamine monitors the quality of all of our movements.”
The results also invite new avenues for research on Parkinson’s disease (which results from a loss of dopamine neurons)
addiction (which hijacks the dopamine reinforcement system) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (which result from pathological reinforcement of maladaptive behaviors)
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health
Klingenstein Neuroscience Foundation and the Simons Foundation

Italy takes cautious steps towards normality
being able to frequent Italy’s bars and restaurants on Monday after more than two months of lockdown was akin to ending a strict dietary regime
“I can taste the fullness of the flavour much more,” said Sandro Urbani as he drank a glass of white Sangiovanni wine outside Caffè Barrique in the Umbrian town of Orvieto
“It’s as if I’ve been on a diet over the past few months and all of a sudden I can eat a slice of salami.”
Italians have been given another taste of freedom with the reopening of bars
hairdressers and all other retailers on Monday as the country tries to revive its economy after the coronavirus emergency
People have been able to buy takeout food and drink since 4 May
but now they can resume the embedded cultural habit of having their coffee at the bar

“They were happy to be able to come and drink coffee in a proper cup at the bar
which is what we’re used to here in Italy,” said the manager
“So today felt like an injection of confidence
But we can only allow three people inside at a time
so for now we’ll only be serving snacks and drinks at the bar
But while the bars enjoyed a flurry of customers
the first day back for restaurants was more subdued
with many still closed as they prepare their premises for reopening
“We had around six customers over lunchtime,” said Chiara Gargioli of Armando al Pantheon

Italy was the first country in Europe to enforce a nationwide lockdown and is gradually emerging from it
parks reopened and people were allowed to visit relatives and partners

for the most part they are doing so cautiously

Other restaurants are expected to follow suit later this week
Owners need to ensure that tables are at least 1 metre apart and are disinfected between sittings
Customers must pre-book and wear masks as they enter a restaurant and whenever they leave their tables
Staff must wear masks and gloves at all times
Hand disinfectant and plastic gloves are available for customers outside Gallo d’Oro before they enter

“People booked before today and had to specify exactly what they wanted over the phone
The distancing rules have so far worked really well.”
a young woman raped in her dorm room or a bathroom at a fraternity party wouldn’t have said a word
She certainly wouldn’t have told a dean or her roommate
knowing they probably wouldn’t believe her
She might have told herself that it wasn’t really rape
She might have reasoned that it was no big deal
just part of the normal college “experience.” Or that it was her fault
In reality at least 6 in every 1,000 women will be sexually assaulted during college
according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics
yet only 20 percent of victims ever report it
And those who do speak up have often seen their efforts amount to nothing
failed by the schools they trusted to protect them
campuses from Brown and Harvard to UC Berkeley and USC have been thrown into tumult as students have demanded change and used federal laws to compel schools to act
91 colleges and universities across the country are being investigated under Title IX
the 1972 law banning sex discrimination in schools
for mishandling cases of rape and sexual assault
Many institutions are also being scrutinized under the Clery Act
which requires schools to disclose crimes on or near campus
who was raped and murdered by a sophomore in the spring of her freshman year
holding aloft their own bedding to support survivors of sexual assault
at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia
nearly 150 students walked out of classes over the treatment of a freshman who’d reported being raped
school officials asked her a barrage of questions: How short was her dress
One school that attracted the earliest national attention
was the small campus of Occidental College in the northeast L.A
Oxy was hit with two federal complaints: One accused the school of mishandling 37 incidents of sexual violence under Title IX (the number would climb to 52); the other
of failing to report sexual assaults under the Clery Act
many Angelenos knew of the campus only because President Obama had been a student there for two years
the private liberal arts college descended into turmoil
and alumni assailing Oxy president Jonathan Veitch for his administration’s apathy and incompetence
But eventually the movement itself began to fray
Since the initial story broke two years ago
Veitch has indeed tried to reform the school’s handling of sexual assault claims
but with alienated faculty and distrustful students
Oxy’s troubles aren’t over yet
Danielle Dirks gathered with a group of Occidental College students in her Highland Park bungalow
Dirks has been teaching sociology at the campus since 2011; she’d invited the students over for breakfast and a pep talk before driving to the Mid City offices of attorney Gloria Allred
Five of the young women were being represented by Allred as she sought redress from the school; they were also part of the Title IX complaint that had been filed that morning
Soon they’d be in a press conference
disclosing their stories of being sexually assaulted
as another student painted their nails with the Title IX symbol
Three of the young women had brought their mothers
Gloria Allred with Oxy claimants; activists and professors
a 42-year-old associate professor of politics
“We filed at 2 a.m.!” she said
referring to the Title IX complaint she and Dirks had lodged against Oxy
Heldman writes about campus rape culture along with topics like sexual objectification for Ms
A leader in the battle to reform the school’s policies
she’s been working on the issue at Occidental since 2009 and helped found the Oxy Sexual Assault Coalition
She’s also a frequent guest on Fox News
where the striking blond was once called “Dr
Thank you so much for being here and supporting each other!” she said in her high voice
she became involved in the sexual assault issue when a student named Carly Mee confided in her
several of those students stood behind Allred as the 73-year-old media virtuoso sat at her conference table before a mass of cameras and reporters
Armored in her signature red jacket with gold buttons
Allred described the Title IX complaint against Oxy
from rape to retaliation against those who’d spoken out
Then Allred delivered some more disturbing news
“The last reported rape occurred this last Friday night and was reported to police on Saturday and to Occidental College this past Sunday,” she said
The students learned about the alleged rape that night when a CBS2 news van rolled up on campus and a reporter began interviewing students
The incident had ignited a protest after Oxy failed to issue a campus alert because
‘there was no ongoing danger of an unknown repeat offense because the student involved was immediately identified and interviewed by the police and by Student Affairs.’ ”
A freshman with freckles and wavy brown hair was on the verge of tears as she recalled her story
the students and Heldman sat around the conference table and ate lunch while their attorney told a story about a sex discrimination case she’d won
“Can you be our commencement speaker?” a senior asked
Allred wanted to know how they felt about the event
“It’s been a really surreal day,” said one student
“This is very empowering for me,” said another
The talk continued along those lines until Allred realized I was still in the room
“This is just for the moms and students,” she said
frowning from across the table before asking me to leave
Occidental College defines rape as the act of any kind of sexual penetration without a person’s consent
If a person is incapacitated—from alcohol or anything else—then the sex is not consensual
If students are reluctant to file reports with administrators
they’re even more unlikely to go to the police
One reason is because many colleges fail to tell them they have the option
Another is because they’re afraid the police won’t believe them
especially if they don’t report the attack right away
Others don’t want to go to the police because of the social consequences they face if their case becomes public
The weekend after she began her freshman year at Occidental in 2010
Carly Mee was raped twice in her dorm room by the same student
he showed up at her room a week later and tried to force her to have sex again
But Mee had been drinking that first night and had no memory of it
continuing to try to rape her so she could “remember.” He stopped when she started crying and said she couldn’t breathe
“I told someone right away,” Mee recalled
“He told me I was stupid for letting this person in my room.” I met with her on a weekday morning in April 2013
shortly after she joined the Title IX complaint
she was applying to law school and looked more like a job applicant than a student with her dress
Initially Mee didn’t tell Oxy officials about her attack because she’d heard the judicial process was extremely “alienating” and “victim blaming.” As the months passed
she kept seeing her rapist everywhere—in the dining hall
“He’d try to talk to me and follow me from room to room,” she said
Then one night in the fall of her sophomore year
Mee was hanging out in a dorm room with other students when the name of her attacker came up in the conversation
she found herself looking across the room into the eyes of a student named Leah
Even before they spoke to each other in private
Leah Capranica was a 19-year-old political science major from a small town in Illinois
When she was trying to decide whether to report her rape
director of student advocacy and accountability
and was troubled to hear that her attacker
He’d be allowed to remain in the dorm she lived in
she says she was told that her attack “wasn’t that serious.” Capranica had been sexually assaulted after her assailant—the same as Mee’s—allegedly spiked her drink at a party and she blacked out
(Research has shown that most college sexual assaults are committed by a small number of serial rapists who often use alcohol in their assaults.) Meeting with Harris
Capranica felt so defeated that she didn’t end up reporting the incident until the next semester
Although her attacker admitted to the assault
Mee followed Capranica’s lead and reported her rape
By then she was working with Heldman and Dirks
The two feminist professors recorded the stories of assault survivors and taught them about their rights under Title IX and how to navigate Oxy’s murky reporting process
they thought their administration wasn’t nearly transparent enough
which ranged in severity from an apology letter to victims and/or community service to suspension or expulsion
Nobody on campus seemed to know how the sanctions were applied or on what criteria they were based
The professors also advocated for students in judicial hearings
Campus judicial boards were never meant to try serious crimes like rape
when the Department of Education sent schools a letter warning that if they didn’t curb sexual violence
Colleges scurried to establish panels to adjudicate and punish sex crimes
Oxy used a panel of faculty and staff to decide cases
Mee was told her case would take three weeks to a month to investigate
and her hearing occurred just before finals
“Every day I felt I was barely hanging on,” she told me
schools are required to help victims with any housing or academic issues
Mee asked that her attacker be moved to another dorm because she felt threatened
But an administrator told her not to worry
“that she had met with my rapist,” Mee said
“and that he didn’t seem like the type of person who would do something like that.” She was terrified that he would go after her
she received an e-mail from the dean of students
according to a confidential copy of the federal complaint that a source provided me
Her attacker had been found responsible for two counts of rape and sexual assault; he’d be expelled
Avery wrote to say she had accepted the assailant’s appeal
it reached the same verdict—but overturned his expulsion
Instead he’d be suspended until Mee graduated
Avery said that it was because of “extraordinary circumstances.” In January 2013
after being hit with criticism from activists about similar cases
Oxy stopped allowing victims and perpetrators to appeal sanctions
During Capranica’s judicial process
her assailant had repeatedly harassed her—as he later did Mee
At one point he allegedly told Capranica: “I like to get confident girls drunk
and have sex with them.” But because her case had already been decided
his ban from Occidental applied only to Mee’s time there
which meant he would be returning to campus before Capranica graduated
she worked so she could graduate six months early
What Mee and Capranica didn’t realize then was that the man who’d raped them had raped a third woman twice
The news that a serial rapist had been roaming Oxy shocked the campus
But it was only a hint of the uproar to come
When Jonathan Veitch became the 15th president of Occidental College on July 1
It had gone through three leaders in four years
considering many college presidents serve a decade
Asked about his proudest accomplishments a year and a half into the job
“just calming the waters a little bit
building morale is an important part of what needed to be done.”
worked at Columbia Pictures for more than a quarter century
rising to president of worldwide film production and overseeing films like Taxi Driver
A historian with degrees from Stanford and Harvard
Veitch went on to become dean of the New School’s Eugene Lang College in New York City
where he gained a reputation as a prodigious fund-raiser
At Occidental Veitch has focused on campus-building projects
raising money for the college’s endowment
and recruiting more international students
The Oxy Sexual Assault Coalition leads a camp out in April 2013
after the lawsuit and federal complaints against the school were announced
If you were to pinpoint when faculty began to mistrust their president
OSAC gave the president a list of 12 demands
describing changes it wanted made in the way Oxy handled sexual violence—from delivering a detailed annual sexual misconduct report to restoring its previous verbal consent policy
which required students to get consent before engaging in sexual activity
when the activists complained that Veitch had done nothing
he said he had agreed only to hear the demands
That same month Veitch alienated students and faculty further when he criticized activists for talking to the media about Oxy’s failure to alert the campus about a rape in February—well before Allred blasted Veitch for not alerting the campus about a subsequent rape in April
“I’m dismayed that...a number of well-intentioned people have…actively sought to embarrass the College on the evening news,” he wrote in a letter in TheOccidental Weekly
By the time of Allred’s April press conference
the 127-year-old campus was a national media story
with faculty and students fighting for justice and an administration fighting to stem the bad publicity
and you know he made mistakes,” Lisa Wade
“He didn’t figure out fast enough that he should listen to the people who were experts on this issue and respect them
Caroline was walking in with all this documentation
but the ways in which our policies were not in compliance with the law
She had been going in there for years.”
That’s when the faculty gave votes of “no confidence” to Avery and campus counsel Carl Botterud over their poor handling of survivors and their sexual assault complaints
with 65 out of 74 professors weighing in against the dean and even more against Botterud
While Botterud quietly resigned (for unspecified reasons)
Veitch’s initial reaction to the crisis back in 2011 had also dismayed professors
“he didn’t respond with ‘Oh
The women on my campus are being assaulted
That’s something we need to fix in the best possible way immediately,’ ” recalled Wade
“He made promises that weren’t kept
We increasingly lost faith that he would do the right thing.”
Vowing to “make things right,” Veitch had hired Gina Smith and Leslie Gomez of the Philadelphia-based law firm Pepper Hamilton in April to review what went wrong and to draft a new sexual misconduct policy
That summer he created the Sexual Misconduct Advisory Board
to examine Oxy’s mistakes and offer recommendations based on research of campus sexual assault
He hired a survivor advocate to counsel students about their reporting options and a new Title IX coordinator to ensure the school complied with federal guidelines
He had the school’s Web pages on sexual assault revamped
and established a mandatory online course about sexual assault for students
Occidental announced a confidential financial settlement with at least ten of Allred’s clients (several more had retained her after the press conference)
in a story by Jason Felch and Jason Song in the Los Angeles Times
Veitch acknowledged the school’s problems
but he believed Occidental had some of the strongest sexual assault policies in the country
If Veitch thought the administration’s problems were over
The faculty was still reeling from the revelations that dozens of their students were being sexually attacked by their classmates
Professors were seething over how Avery had kept her job
several faculty members had been asked to surrender their phones and laptops to O’Melveny & Myers
in response to the federal complaints and the prospect of a suit from Allred (she never filed)
Although the practice is common in lawsuits
professors viewed it as a chilling intrusion into their academic rights
When the faculty gathered in Johnson Hall for its monthly meeting in September 2013
members assumed that Veitch would answer their questions about the Allred settlement
Instead the president spoke for nearly 30 minutes
declaring his administration to be “shell-shocked” by the acrimony directed toward it
asserting that the sexual assault battle had damaged his “health and my soul.”
About a month later reporter Jason Felch detailed in the Los AngelesTimes how Oxy had failed to include 19 anonymously reported incidents of sexual violence in its 2010 Clery report
They’d been discovered by another consulting firm hired by Oxy
Times story the college acknowledged the mistake to Felch
who followed with a second article on December 7
This one accused Occidental of underreporting another 27 cases of sexual assault in 2012—reinforcing the impression that Oxy was deliberately hiding rapes and assaults
For almost three months after Felch’s story ran
the administration said nothing publicly about the 27 cases
a PR crisis communications firm run by Glenn Bunting
a former investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times
had a bitter fight over a book they coauthored about the Getty Museum
Frammolino had been lobbying Oxy as a client since October
boasting that he knew Felch’s methods of reporting and could turn around the negative press
Times editors to dispute Felch’s account in a PowerPoint presentation
Felch was fired and the newspaper published a letter on its Web site retracting the reporter’s December 7 story
didn’t qualify under the reporting guidelines for the Clery Act
some involved sexual harassment while others occurred off campus
Finally the paper revealed this: Felch had also been having an “inappropriate relationship” with a source for this and other stories he had written
Whether that was the reason he had been fired wasn’t explicitly clear
When journalists asked Oxy for the PowerPoint material about the cases
“We agreed to share certain information with the Times to prove that the newspaper got it wrong when it reported that Occidental failed to disclose 27 reports of sexual assault,” Occidental spokesman James Tranquada wrote in a statement to me
As for showing the PowerPoint material to me
“Consistent with our response to other media outlets

Felch wrote that he was “dismissed for creating the appearance of a conflict of interest” and that he had voluntarily told his editors about the affair after learning that he was being investigated
He noted that he wasn’t shown the new information
so he never got the chance to defend his reporting
He also said that he repeatedly tried to get Oxy to verify or dispute the number of cases and was stonewalled
Oxy contended that Felch never mentioned a specific figure and waited until right before the story ran to ask to interview administrators
On March 18 Veitch addressed the scandal at a faculty meeting
Many there were outraged that they hadn’t been told about the involvement of Bunting’s firm
One professor accused Oxy of “dirty tactics.” Heldman and Veitch argued over the disputed—and endlessly confusing—assault numbers
“Why wasn’t it cleared up for us last year?” Heldman asked and went on to out herself as a source for Felch’s story
which is why we need an opportunity to talk together,” he said
“You have brought me into your office
then you have told me I don’t know what I am talking about,” she said
“If you think there’s a snowball’s chance that I would sit in a room with you again while you insult me
while you have promised things and not delivered—your statement today is the absolute best evidence that any of us have of what you’ve been doing behind the scenes.”
It seemed nobody was talking about Oxy’s sexual assault problems anymore
the ability of faculty and students to say
or publish almost whatever they like no matter how conservative or contrary
just days after the rancorous meeting with Veitch
Oxy’s faculty received a letter signed by several professors
“We write to you today out of concern for the well-being of the college,” it began
the letter seemed to blame Heldman and Dirks for the “polarization” of the faculty and the administration
“I signed it because I feared we had a no-end strategy,” an early OSAC member told me
What most faculty didn’t know was that OSAC was fracturing
Some of the seniors felt that Heldman was trying to exert too much control over the group
She wanted OSAC to stage a “Scarlet Letter” protest against Veitch
where they’d all show up on campus wearing scarlet A’s
It was Veitch and his consultants for the L.A
who were to blame for the public admission that a professor had been sleeping with its reporter
“She wrote us an extremely long text message how she never trusted any of us,” recalled one of the students
who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation
All of us were crying.” In April the students deleted their hero from OSAC’s Facebook page and announced that from then on
Things were also getting tense between professors who’d been involved in the movement
One early OSAC member said that in June 2013
Heldman kicked her out of the organization
“She didn’t like how I was handling things,” the professor recalled
“She decided I wasn’t in the inner circle anymore.”
warning of this person’s credibility after I mentioned speaking with her
“However she may be presenting to you
she is working against the struggle as we see it on campus.” From then on Heldman didn’t respond to my e-mails
That same month I learned that Heldman and Dirks had split
For the movement’s sake they were trying to keep it quiet to maintain a united front
but those who knew found the news unthinkable
The two had been writing a book on campus rape
Any time activists and students referred to them
Heldman had even tweeted a photo of the two leaning together
Dirks met me one afternoon in August at an Eagle Rock diner
where she dashed in wearing workout clothes
She had a Pilates appointment across the street
part of an effort to take better care of herself
“I am really so scared,” she said as she discussed the falling-out
Her relationship with Heldman had been strained for months
a casualty of the incessant media attention on and power struggles in the movement
After they launched the national student-faculty advocacy group End Rape on Campus
the Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker
came to Oxy to work on his film about the college sexual assault epidemic
The crew was shooting Heldman and Dirks when the director interrupted
Dirks figured the students made for a more compelling story
Hadn’t the professors handed this documentary to Dick
Why were the media focusing so much on Clark and Pino
“She accused me of not being in the trenches with her and turning against her,” Dirks added
she told Heldman she was going to resign from EROC
“I didn’t realize the extent of how much of that stress was her,” Dirks told me
She cofounded the national group Faculty Against Rape
whose mission is to enlist more professors in fighting sexual assault and to protect them against retaliation from their schools
Times that a professor had been sleeping with Felch; some on campus assumed it was to influence the paper’s sexual assault coverage
At first Heldman pretended to many people—including me—to be the source
but several faculty members knew it was someone else
Studies show that only 2 to 8 percent of rape and sexual assault cases involve false claims
But in the push to end sexual violence on college campuses
there’s a growing refrain coming from men found guilty of rape: that the system is now stacked against them
28 law school professors deemed the school’s new sexual assault policy “overwhelmingly stacked against the accused.” And
there is the Rolling Stone debacle from last fall
in which the magazine backed away from a woman’s claims of being gang raped at a fraternity house at the University of Virginia
First the magazine said its trust in the source was “misplaced.” Then
it said its reporter had failed by not contacting the alleged attackers
confirming the worst suspicions of campus rape deniers
“I still remember when I did my first interview and outed myself as a survivor
“So it’s hard to see the reactions to her
and the assumptions because there were errors in the journalism
Students accused of sexual assault at schools including Brown
and Swarthmore College have filed charges of their own
some of them citing Title IX violations themselves
At Oxy there’s been one such suit: In December 2013
a freshman identified as John Doe was expelled after he was found responsible for raping a 17-year-old female student
and he ranted about the case on social media
That same month a post on Reddit and 4chan about an online form enabling Oxy students to anonymously report sexual assault led to men’s rights activists swamping the Web site with more than 550 fake complaints
In February 2014
his lawyers argued Jane Doe had actually assaulted him
and she’d given him oral sex while he was “intoxicated” and therefore couldn’t consent
She also texted a friend that she was going to have sex
which had long been criticized for not punishing rapists enough
was suddenly being accused of going too far
John Doe’s lawyers released about 200 pages of confidential documents
The young woman had never wanted to go public
and now the excruciating details of her experience were splashed online
When Oxy later went to court to have the material sealed or redacted
Then a civil liberties group called the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education rallied in defense of John Doe
unleashing a torrent of online harassment from trolls aimed at female witnesses
On June 6 she received an e-mail from a man in Missouri: “What kind of a radical fucking man hating dyke are you?” it read
nail your pussy shut and go wait tables before you harm someone else.”
I’m making sure we’re dotting our I ’s and crossing our T ’s,” said Veronika Barsegyan from behind her desk at the Campus Safety office
and Barsegyan was a month into her job as Oxy’s Clery coordinator
managing the daily crime log and recording every incident
The 28-year-old was scrambling to pull together the annual Clery report
it was supposed to contain Occidental’s crime numbers for the previous three calendar years
“I’m auditing and auditing and auditing to make sure we are completely compliant,” said Barsegyan
A burly 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
For years it was Nieto’s job to ensure that Oxy’s rape and sexual assault numbers were correct
Although she relied on departments to pass along sex crime statistics to her
sometimes the reports fell into a black hole
When Oxy’s Clery Report came out on October 1
it revealed that the number of reported sex offenses surged from 12 incidents in 2011 to 64 incidents in 2013
Although 34 of those occurred in previous years and even more had been reported anonymously
this meant that students were finally coming out of the shadows to report
Another person who’ll strongly influence Oxy’s ability to improve the way it handles sexual assaults is Ruth Jones
Occidental’s new Title IX coordinator
In September California became the first state in the country to adopt what’s regarded as the best policy to help students navigate sex
Part of Jones’s job is to make sure everyone understands the state’s affirmative sexual consent policy for colleges and universities—commonly known as “yes means yes.” (Unless someone says yes to having sex
there should be no assumption that it’s consensual.) A lawyer in her sixties
Jones has a patchwork of recent federal laws—the White House “Not Alone” report
the Senator Claire McCaskill legislation to reduce the prevalence of college sexual assault—to consider
People want to get this right,” she said
“and there’s not a common view of how to do that.”
While colleges like Dartmouth have moved to mandatory expulsion for students who commit certain kinds of sexual assault
Occidental has yet to adopt such a stiff or uniform approach
At Oxy a student found responsible for rape or sexual assault does face suspension or possible expulsion; however
the policy still doesn’t make clear how punishments are decided
Is one form of sexual assault worse than another
But Jones’s hardest job may be restoring confidence in the reporting process
professors would have to tell the college if a student privately came to them about a rape or sexual assault
had advised that because of trust issues at Oxy
If students knew their information wouldn’t be confidential
they wouldn’t come to their professors
a month later a student I’ll call Mary contacted me
Mary claimed she knew two students—one male
one female—who’d been sexually assaulted by the same male student but hadn’t reported because they were leery of the process
after repeated delays for more than a year
It was supposed to illuminate how Occidental had found itself in this mess
Instead the 130-page document absolved the administration of almost any blame and singled out just about everyone else
especially activists—presumably OSAC—writing that their tactics were standing “in the way of candid and collaborative communication between activists and administrators.”
In a prepared statement his spokesperson provided me
characterized the report as being “a frank and productive discussion.” But in an e-mail to me
chastised Smith and Gomez’s account of Oxy’s troubled history
the President and the Board of Trustees have missed another valuable opportunity to bring the campus together,” wrote Tinberg
a professor of mathematics at Occidental since 1980
While some faculty members disapproved of OSAC’s methods
“we all have stood together to make sure our students are safe
And their fire and passion alone helped to ignite a nationwide movement that we should be proud of.”
If anyone had helped create the toxic culture on campus
and his sheer stubbornness that has impeded him,” she wrote
The report was just “another public relations effort that blames faculty and staff
and even the White House for the inability of our college leaders to do the right thing.”
In his statement Veitch focused on the positive: “We now have a deeper
the actions of the recent past seem to say plenty
When I checked Oxy’s daily crime log leading up to December 21
there were two rapes and one sexual assault reported for the entire year of 2014
None of them occurred in 2014 but were reported retroactively
not a single sexual assault occurred in 2014
Either Occidental has completely solved its rape problem
concluding the process isn’t worth it

At the Siberian Federal University’s Congress Hall, all delegations arranged their own exhibition location in a wooden booth to demonstrate their national federation’s structure, promote future FISU events they are hosting and display cultural and culinary aspects of their country.
Participants dancing at the FISU Fair Participants enjoyed the great variety offered to them at the Fair: “I liked the diversity of cultures and people. I tried chocolate from Taiwan and some Hungarian snacks, my friends tried some herb liqueur from Germany”, said student-fencer Kanyapat Meechai from Thailand.
After strolling through the corridors of the venue, spirit and food tastings participants once again met in the center of the Congress Hall for short cultural presentations. After anchoring a show fight held by two of her fellow students, Meechai said, “I am really proud that we were able to present our traditional sport and typical costumes.”
Prior to the Fair, of course, there was another day full of plenary sessions and workshops focusing on the Forum’s sub-theme of Dual Career. Two-time Olympic champion and former artistic gymnast Svetlana Khorkina gave a lecture on the importance of getting additional education for athletes and being flexible in the professional sphere.
Laura Capranica and Andrew Guy Taylor lecturing on the virtues of dual career student-athletes
Prof. Dr. Laura Capranica, President of the European Athlete as Student Network (EAS), critisised the lack of awareness amongst students when it comes to programmes that can help them to realise their potential when retired. The growing popularity of such programmes is significant not only for athletes who retire from sports, but also for young athletes who still decide on their vocation, she said.

The regular monitoring of physical fitness and sport-specific performance is important in elite sports to increase the likelihood of success in competition
This study aimed to systematically review and to critically appraise the methodological quality
and feasibility of the sport-specific performance assessment in Olympic combat sports like amateur boxing
A systematic search was conducted in the electronic databases PubMed
Studies in combat sports were included that reported validation data (e.g.
39 studies were eligible for inclusion in this review
The majority of studies (74%) contained sample sizes <30 subjects
1/3 of the reviewed studies lacked a sufficient description (e.g.
expertise level) of the included participants
Seventy-two percent of studies did not sufficiently report inclusion/exclusion criteria of their participants
the description and/or inclusion of a familiarization session (s) was either incomplete or not existent
Sixty-percent of studies did not report any details about the stability of testing conditions
Approximately half of the studies examined reliability measures of the included sport-specific tests (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.43–1.00)
Content validity was addressed in all included studies
criterion validity (only the concurrent aspect of it) in approximately half of the studies with correlation coefficients ranging from r = −0.41 to 0.90
Construct validity was reported in 31% of the included studies and predictive validity in only one
Test sensitivity was addressed in 13% of the included studies
The majority of studies (64%) ignored and/or provided incomplete information on test feasibility and methodological limitations of the sport-specific test
insufficient information or a complete lack of information was provided in the respective field of the test application
Several methodological gaps exist in studies that used sport-specific performance tests in Olympic combat sports
Additional research should adopt more rigorous validation procedures in the application and description of sport-specific performance tests in Olympic combat sports
volleyball) but not in Olympic combat sports
the purpose of this study was to systematically review the available literature and to critically analyze the methodological quality
and feasibility of sport-specific tests in Olympic combat sports
The experimental approach comprehended five-steps (Khan et al., 2003): Step 1: Framing questions for the review; Step 2: Identification of relevant works; Step 3: Assessment of the quality of studies; Step 4: Summary the evidence; and Step 5: Interpretation of the findings
The research question focused on sport-specific testing in Olympic combat sports (e.g.
A Boolean search strategy was applied using the operators AND
According to the main topic of the present study
Flow of information through the different phases of the systematic review
Details related to sport-specific tests' characteristics
Based upon six criteria adapted from a risk-of-bias evaluation in a previously published review of tests examining sport-related skill outcomes (Robertson et al., 2014), two authors (HC and YN) carefully reviewed all eligible articles for quality appraisal (Table 3)
the number of participants included to establish validity/reliability/sensitivity of the sport-specific test; (ii) details related to study participants (e.g.
and anthropometric details); (iii) presence of clearly established inclusion/exclusion criteria; (iv) presence of familiarization session(s) prior to sport-specific testing or not; (v) presence of clearly established interval between test-retest assessments; and (vi) stability of testing conditions (i.e.
whether testing equipment and environmental conditions remained stable between sessions or not) as well as participants between sessions
the following information was extracted: author(s)
detailed tables reporting major characteristics of the selected studies were created
A synthesis of major findings reported in the included articles was submitted to a thematic analysis deemed relevant for generating inferences
The proportion of studies including athletes competing at national or international level was 41%
that including mixed samples of national/international and regional/sub-elite level athletes was 33%
and that recruiting club/regional level participants was 26%
The sex representation of the participants was 61% for male athletes
No information on the sex of the participants was present for 6% of the studies
Frequency of Occurrence (%) of publication years of the scientific contributions included in the systematic literature review
The methodological characteristics of the included studies are shown in Table 3
Whilst only 28% of the included studies provided detailed inclusion/exclusion criteria
26% provided a partial description and 46% did not include any information
Only 38% of the studies scheduled one or more familiarization sessions for their participants and 2% provided partial details on this relevant aspect
whereas the majority of the studies (60%) presented a lack of information
Studies focusing on reliability (61%) included intervals between experimental trials ranging from 1 day to 11 weeks
with 57% of them adopting a 1-week interval
information on this issue was lacking in 39% of studies
Only 28% of the studies provided detailed information on stability of testing conditions
with 59% of them not presenting any information and 13% providing partial information
Methodological quality of eligible studies
The MDC95% of the sport-specific test was addressed in 8% of the reviewed studies
Feasibility and methodological limitations of the sport-specific tests were sufficiently explored in 36% of the included studies
with 51% providing partial details and 13% ignoring this aspect
Information related to the expected use and context of the test was adequately pointed out in 72% of the included studies
Eighteen percent reported limited information on this aspect and 10% ignored this relevant sport-specific aspect
Sport-specific test duration was described in detail in 74% of the included studies and the remaining 26% did not report any information on this issue
The main goal of this study was to examine the methodological quality
This is the first study detailing the different methodological approaches adopted so far with sport-specific tests in Olympic combat sports
Results of this study highlighted: (1) emerging academics conversation on sport-specific tests in Olympic combat sports; (2) a disparity in the gender representation of participants; and (3) several methodological gaps in the study of sport-specific testing in Olympic combat sports
Since 2006 a substantial increase in publication activity has been observed, coherently with the quest of sport-specific testing procedures to evaluate Olympic combat sport athletes. At present, research in sport-specific testing of Olympic combat sports could be considered entering its intermediate stage (Edmondson and McManus, 2007)
being characterized by not fully established theories and several methodological shortcomings
a lack of a “gold standard” technique to assess sport-specific outcomes in peculiar combat sport contexts and valid and reliable tools suited to large-scale assessments limits the generalizability of findings
in considering that ~40% of the eligible studies focused on judo
the need to develop valid sport-specific tests for athletes practicing other Olympic combat sports emerged
few studies examined test sensitivity (13%)
Feasibility and methodological limitations were partially reported and/or ignored in the majority of the reviewed (64%) studies
Detailed information related to the expected use and context of the protocol were either partially reported or ignored in 28% of the studies
the sports scholars are urged to intensify their efforts to bridge this imbalance between women's sport participation and scientific information on this specific population
future studies are encouraged to establish this important sport-specific testing's aspect
one aspect of the three sport-specific properties (i.e.
This observation may constitute another gap in the literature because
a sport-specific test should cover the whole validity aspects (i.e.
a particular focus in the future investigations should be given to examining all validity properties of sport-specific performance testing in Olympic combat sports
more research dealing with these two determinant aspects are required
future investigations should pay attention to these central sport-specific tests' aspects
Because of the variety of statistical approaches used to assess sport-specific measurements properties, it was not possible to perform any meta-analysis (Robertson et al., 2014)
compared with other sporting activities such as team sports
scientific contributions on combat sports in indexed journals are limited
with studies mainly published in non-indexed journals (i.e.
gray literature) or remain even unpublished
the stringent search approach adopted in this review has neglected information available to coaches in specific technical magazines and websites
Establishing valid sport-specific tests that assess the actual physical fitness and/or physiological attributes of Olympic combat sports practitioners still one of the major concerns for sports sciences scholars
After reviewing 39 studies in different Olympic combat sports disciplines (e.g.
several methodological gaps have been pointed-out
These limits may prevent sport-specific testing from being widely used
These limitations are mainly related to the small sample size
lack of details about the inclusion/exclusion criteria in most of the studies
lack of familiarization session prior to testing
and paucity of details about stability of testing conditions
relative and absolute) have rarely been addressed in the reviewed studies and the available results showed reliability levels ranging from poor to excellent
predictive validity was reported in only one study
construct validity received less attention by researchers
one aspect of the three main validity properties are limited
All these concerns may limit the applicability
and accuracy of outcomes of sport-specific testing in Olympic combat sports
Additional research should adopt more strict validation procedures by addressing reliability
and sensitivity in the application and description of sport-specific performance tests in Olympic combat sports
predictive validity should receive more attention in future research

New details emerge regarding the murder of Ilaria Sula
the 22-year-old student who disappeared last March 25 in Rome and was found lifeless on April 2 inside a suitcase in a ravine in Capranica Prenestina
In a letter sent to investigators by Mark Samson
the 23-year-old who confessed to the crime
accused of aggravated voluntary homicide and concealment of a corpse
said he stopped to buy cigarettes at a tobacconist in the capital on the afternoon of March 26
defended by lawyers Fabrizio Gallo and Alessandro Pillitu
reportedly reported having met 3 passers-by in the African quarter area: with one of them
investigated for complicity in concealment of a corpse
was interviewed by the Public Prosecutor this morning at the Rome Police Headquarters
"an integration of the statements already made on April 7th was made
the Prosecutor's Office needed some passages to be specified – explained the woman's lawyer
The accusation against the woman remains unchanged
and I reiterate that Mark's father is completely uninvolved in the affair
The Prosecutor's Office is trying to reconstruct in the most detailed way possible the chronology of the moments before and after the crime
She did not know where Mark would take the body"
underlining that the woman answered all the investigators' questions
emerged from the analyses carried out on the dash cam
an on-board camera found by the investigators
coordinated by the additional prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini
The traces of coffee found in Ilaria's stomach following the autopsy would instead suggest that the murder occurred on the morning of March 26

the 24-year-old was taken to the Regina Coeli prison
It was the 24-year-old who led the police to the place where he hid the young woman's body

the intervention of the firefighters was necessary
the suspicion is that the student was killed in the boy's house in via Homs

is accused of the murder of the 22-year-old student who disappeared last March 25 in Rome and was found lifeless last April 2 inside a suitcase in a ravine in Capranica Prenestina
To kill and dispose of the body of Ilaria Sula
He said it himself during the hearing to validate the arrest before the investigating judge in Regina Coeli prison
The young man is charged with the crimes of voluntary homicide aggravated by emotional relationship and concealment of a corpse
Samson allegedly provided numerous details regarding the crime
The 22-year-old allegedly arrived alone on the evening of the 25th at her ex-boyfriend's house in Homs Street
the 23-year-old allegedly killed her after seeing a message on the student's cell phone
stabbing her with a knife used for breakfast
revealed that the girl died from a hemorrhage caused by three stab wounds to the neck
along with the rags used for cleaning and a carpet
all of which he then threw in a dumpster in the area where he lived
Samson allegedly loaded the suitcase containing the body into the car and transported it to Capranica Prenestina
a place the confessed criminal knew from previous trips
The young man also denied having premeditated the crime to the investigating judge
The 23-year-old's story will have to be verified by investigators
Following the tests carried out on the car used by Samson
which the suspect allegedly threw into a manhole
but checks will probably be made on the 22-year-old's PC
Investigations are also underway into the movements of the 23-year-old's parents
whose position remains under investigation by investigators
although when asked specifically about his parents
he availed himself of the right to remain silent
brings style and sumptuous excess to Glyndebourne Festival Opera’s wonderful and lush staging of Handel’s Alcina
Our correspondent, Tony Cooper, provides a second view of Glyndebourne's production of Handel's Alcina directed by Francesco Micheli with Jane Archibald in the title role. [see Robert's review of the production}
Handel loosely based the libretto for Alcina on Riccardo Broschi’s opera
comes from Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem
for such other Handel delights as Orlando and Ariodante.
The work received its first performance at the Teatro Capranica
a theatre originally constructed in 1679 by the Capranica family and housed in the early Renaissance Palazzo Capranica
the second public theatre to open in the Eternal City but
ceased operating as a full-scale theatre and opera-house in 1881
Following the closure of the cinema in 2000
the theatre now functions as a conference and performance venue.
this forgotten three-act opera took flight and
Joan Sutherland hit the headlines in the title-role in Franco Zeffirelli’s stylish production at La Fenice in February 1960 seen a couple of years later at the Royal Opera House
Covent Garden while Robert Carsen directed another super-charged production for Opéra de Paris in 1999 later seen at Lyric Opera of Chicago
Both productions featured Renée Fleming while Cecilia Bartoli wowed her adoring fans in the title-role just before Lockdown at the 2019 Salzburg Festival.
Francesco Micheli’s production for Glyndebourne (the first time the opera has been staged on the South Downs marking Signor Micheli’s Glyndebourne début) is surely up there with the best and as for Canadian coloratura soprano
Jane Archibald (who made her Royal Opera House début in the 2013-14 season as Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos) her portrayal of the sorceress Alcina is surely up there with the best
She delivered the goods in no uncertain terms
Her stage presence lovingly matching her vocal prowess
she proves a dab hand at seducing every knight that lands on her magical isle but when tired of them ditches them lock
stock and barrel and uses her magical powers to turn them into stones
plants and wild beast as only a sorceress could do
But one thing that this seductive enchantress couldn’t master is conjuring up ‘love’
the most important item on her agenda.
I found Signor Micheli’s production riveting and exciting to the core
He pulls up the drawbridge on Renaissance Italy and places the scenario in the northern industrial city of Milan in the Fifties and Sixties
when one entered the Glyndebourne auditorium one was faced by a front cloth depicting an abstract impression of the Duomo di Milano set against a detailed image of the Fifties-designed Brutalist building
a vast tower-like building forming part of the first generation of Italian modern architecture
Its name derives from the name of the 17th-century Spanish politician
Alcina’s island in Micheli’s realisation of Alcina becomes a burlesque nightclub named Teatro Lirico (perhaps it ought to be ‘Capranica’) but the action of the opera’s prologue featuring a small group of businessman hints that the theatre is at risk of demolition to make way for large-scale office development
The show running at the club is aptly named ‘L’isola d’Alcina’
And the club’s hostess is none other than Alcina with Ms Archibald looking the part from head to toe
A brunette sporting a long-flowing hair style and a fitting costume to match (elegantly designed by Italian-born designer
Alessio Rosati) she came over as a Fifties-style movie star echoing to a degree Anita Ekberg
the star of Federic Fellini’s iconic Sixties movie
Although Ms Archibald made a big impression on the show overall her sorceress sister
Morgana (sung so eloquently and delicately by Soraya Mafi) made a big impression
especially on her entry in the first act dressed as a mermaid lying on a high-moving gantry-type platform operated by a four-person stage team
The scene was quite remarkable and visually quite striking
with British lighting designer Bruno Poet (who has lit up so many stages worldwide) adding to the overall atmosphere and pleasure of the scene by conjuring up a fantastic lighting scenario.
it was Edoardo Sanchi’s sets that helped the show to tick so freely
he created a marvellous candy-coloured free-standing set for the ‘island of love’ adorned by a couple of palm trees with a glitzy shell-designed throne atop of a half-dozen steps and a lot of fancy work in between
all his sets ranging from back-stage dressing-rooms to gender-neutral toilets were free standing constantly being moved on and off stage thus keeping the action of the show and its myriad of scenes fast moving
that particularly grabbed my fancy was a stylish long glass-topped cocktail bar with high stools finished off by a criss-crossed patterned padded front with a golden-coloured back bar while a theatre box containing a bunch of stage-door johnnies conjured up the plush interior of Teatro Lirico.
The cast were gallant in their respective roles
was Svetlina Stoyanova’s portrayal of Ruggiero while Melisso
was dutifully sung by Thomas Elwin (taking over the role at short notice from Stuart Jackson) and James Cleverton put in a nice performance as Astolfo.
I was impressed by Rowan Pierce in the boyish role of Oberto searching for his long-lost father
he lashes out at Alcina for her beastly wrongdoing
For the first time she finds herself wrong footed
But the moment when Ruggiero and his former tutor
isolated from society and completely spent
Her former lovers return to being humans again and they all rejoice and sing of their joy celebrating the triumph of love over evil and magic.
The Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment (leader: Huw Daniel) conducted by Jonathan Cohen (artistic director and founder of the British early music ensemble
Arcangelo) spun their own inimitable style of magic in the pit delivering a fine and well-balanced reading of the score that didn’t overshadow the singers
harbouring such good acoustic properties as it does
is the perfect size for Handel and it certainly showed in this performance.
2012) created some amazing stuff for the well-disciplined team of eight dancers comprising Soledad de la Hoz
Oihana Vesga not least by some sumptuous dance routines particularly showy when the girls employed peacock feather fans in a grand burlesque manner.
