which is a subsidiary of the Italian company Hera Group
has acquired a PET recycling facility in the northern Italian town of Carmignano di Brenta from Gurit Italia
The transaction is expected to increase Aliplast’s annual capacity by approximately 15,000 tonnes of recycled PET
Aliplast is a European leader in the collection and reprocessing of plastic waste
which is itself based out of Ospedaletto d’Istrana in the Province of Treviso
recycles more than 100,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year
with recycled contents of up to 100 per cent
and its operations are designed to close material loops to the greatest degree possible
More than 90 per cent of the company's input material is recycled
The latest acquisition forms part of a broader strategic expansion
Aliplast noted that this move comes as increasingly ambitious targets are introduced through new regulation
including Italian legislation transposing the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
Both pieces of legislation mandate increased incorporation of recycled materials in bottles and other plastic packaging
The plant acquired from Gurit processes post-consumer PET collected by the Corepla and Coripet packaging waste recovery consortia
Aliplast is purchasing a complete PET grinding
washing and extrusion line that can make products suitable for food-contact applications as well as for use in technical fibres for consumer goods
such as clothing and automobile accessories
In addition to boosting Aliplast’s production capacity
the site's large storage yards would help optimise the company’s logistics chain
Aliplast operates four sites in Italy and one site each in France
the group generated revenues of about €200m in 2022 and €160m in 2023
Aliplast says it is a key partner for converters
which includes the regeneration of resources as one of its qualifying points," remarked Aliplast’s CEO Michele Petrone
The company’s goal was to provide customers with the highest standards of in terms of supply chain transparency and product safety
Gurit had aquired the PET recycling operations in Carmignano di Brenta from the company Valplastic Srl in 2019 for an undisclosed sum
Gurit's intention was to secure recycled PET as feedstock for the production of core components for wind turbine blades and other applications
the company announced that it had decided to divest the PET recycling plant as it had now developed "a global sourcing of recycled PET"

Huge hailstones pummelled continent before expected cooling down across much of central and southern Europe
Temperatures were not the only weather-related record to be broken over the past couple of weeks
The European hail record has been breached too
On 19 July 2023, there were several very large hailstones, more than 10cm in diameter measured along their longest axis, recorded across parts of Italy and Croatia. One of these stones, measuring 16cm in diameter, was recorded in Carmignano di Brenta, Italy, and broke the previous largest hail record in Europe
which was previously held by a 15cm stone found in Romania in 2016
However, just five days later, a new record was set. At about 9pm UTC on 24 July 2023, a 19cm hailstone was found in the town of Azzano Decimo, also in Italy
This is very close to the all-time largest hail recorded of 20.3cm
Hailstones of this size are usually formed in supercells
which have strong rotating updrafts that are able to support their mass
keeping them suspended long enough so the hailstones can grow to these very large sizes
there will be a general cooling down trend across much of central and southern Europe
Although temperatures will generally remain above average for the first part of this week
Greece will be one of the later places where temperatures will return to their climatological average
with this not expected until the following Monday
due to a weakening of the high-pressure system trapping the heat over these regions as low pressure pushes eastwards across northern Europe
temperatures are set to be considerably above the seasonal average at the start of this week
Argentina and Chile will have temperatures close to 30C
with temperatures in neighbouring countries such as Peru
and southern Brazil in the region of 5-7C above their respective averages for the time of year
with temperatures returning much closer to average by the weekend

Severe thunderstorms in Europe appeared to set a continental hail record twice in the span of five days in Italy
The most recent rash of severe weather on Monday included supercell thunderstorms that dumped giant hail from parts of northern Italy into neighboring Slovenia
One massive oblong hailstone recovered Monday night in Azzano Decimo
was estimated to be 19 centimeters – almost 7.5 inches – long
According to the European Severe Storms Laboratory (ESSL), this was the largest diameter hailstone of record anywhere in Europe
The giant hail and destructive winds uprooted trees, heavily damaged vehicles and destroyed crops
that European hail record only stood for five days prior to Monday
there were two dozen reports of hail over 10 centimeters – almost 4 inches – in diameter received by the ESSL in Italy and Croatia
That included a 16-centimeter – 6.3-inch – diameter hailstone recovered in Carmignano di Brenta, about 25 miles northwest of Venice, which the ESSL found topped the previous record size stone from June 20, 2016, in Romania
The July 19 hailstorms injured over 100 in northeast Italy alone
The World Meteorological Organization maintains official world weather records
including the heaviest hailstone (2.25 pounds in Bangladesh on April 14
1986) and the deadliest hailstorm (246 killed in India on April 20
no records for hail size are maintained by the WMO and no information was provided to ESSL about the weight of either of the Italian hailstones from July 19 or 24
The July 24 hailstone was of comparable diameter to the U.S. record size hailstone, an 8-inch diameter giant recovered in Vivian, South Dakota, on July 23, 2010
The rash of severe weather occurred along the leading edge of a heat wave that smashed all-time records in southern Europe
