However, they continued managing the property until January 2023 They waited for this split before assembling the elements of Cascina Penna-Currado Total production is currently a projected 70,000 bottles ‘We wanted something we could manage as a family,’ said Penna Both plan on joining their parents full time after completing their studies and internships at other estates Penna underlines that this is a new project with potential to evolve ‘We are in our mid-fifties and still have plenty of ambition,’ she said Marchesi di Barolo, the historic Barolo estate owned by the Abbona family, has acquired the Cascina Bruciata winery in Barbaresco from vintner Carlo Balbo for an undisclosed price "It happened last week," Valentina Abbona, daughter of owners Ernesto and Anna Abbona, told Wine Spectator. "We didn't even have time to prepare an announcement for Vinitaly." Cascina Bruciata owns nearly 20 contiguous acres in the Rio Sordo cru in Barbaresco of which the oldest parcel is 85 years old Rio Sordo was the first Barbaresco vinified by Marchesi di Barolo. They stopped buying the grapes to focus on their estate vineyards several years ago. Coincidentally, Cascina Bruciata also owns a small parcel in Cannubi Muscatel, adjacent to the Marchesi di Barolo vineyards there. The acquisition adds to the 185 total acres owned by Marchesi di Barolo, among them 5 in Barbaresco, where it produces a Barbaresco, Barbaresco Riserva and Barbaresco Serragrilli from vineyards in the commune of Neive. “Buffalo” division helped liberate Cascina from German forces retreating north into the Apennine mountains of Tuscany the town of 45,000 people in the Arno River valley near Pisa was run by leftwing administrations The region became a byword in Italy for racial tolerance and social democratic politics Then in June 2016 something surprising happened: Cascina whose postwar fortunes were built on the now-struggling furniture sector a 29-year-old rightwing firebrand from the Eurosceptic Northern League a 50-year-old stallholder at the Monday morning open-air market in Navacchio which has become a hub of support for Ms Ceccardi says there is little doubt what triggered this small but significant political earthquake referring to the more than 620,000 migrants who have been rescued in the Mediterranean Sea and brought to Italy over the past four years “We are tired of having all these people around; we can’t keep them here; we can’t handle it any more Immigration is one of the great scourges of Italy “When the cake was bigger for everyone and the economy worked better there were fewer complaints,” he says including the anti-immigrant Northern League the more moderate Forza Italia led by former premier Silvio Berlusconi are heading into the poll with the winds at their backs partly due to their anti-immigration stance a Berlusconi-led coalition snatched control of Sicily from the centre-left in a regional election that was widely seen as a barometer of the national mood Next year they have a realistic chance of trumping a deflated ruling centre-left Democratic party as well as the anti-establishment Five Star Movement The Northern League has the support of about 15 per cent of Italians compared with just 4 per cent at the 2013 general election and 6 per cent in the European polls of 2014 If it performs that well it could emerge as the senior partner in a possible centre-right governing coalition with Mr Berlusconi dictating policy and possibly choosing the prime minister In another potentially destabilising scenario for the EU the Northern League could accept to be a minority partner in a government led by the anti-establishment Five Star Movement which could threaten to pull Italy out of the euro The reinvention of the Northern League has much to do with Matteo Salvini its 44-year old leader who took over the party in 2013 shedding its previous emphasis on the secession of Italy’s prosperous north and turning it into a more traditionally nationalist party along the lines of France’s National Front Not only has it strengthened its position in northern Italy it has also gained ground in the “red” regions of central Italy the Northern League’s support in Tuscany more than doubled from 6 per cent to 16 per cent in regional elections “The Northern League has been moving into central Italy and this goes hand in hand with its focus on immigration and law and order,” says Daniele Albertazzi a senior lecturer in European politics at the University of Birmingham Critics fear that the Northern League’s ascent fits in with the broader growth of far-right sentiment in Italy the far right CasaPound won 9 per cent of the vote in a by-election in Ostia and secured 8 per cent in municipal polls in Lucca There’s a whole cauldron that fuels these forces,” says Franco Tagliaboschi a national association dedicated to preserving the memory of the partisans who fought fascism and Nazism during the second world war There is no open door policy in Italy but in recent years it has co-ordinated a massive humanitarian effort to rescue migrants from South Asia the Middle East and Africa travelling to Europe on ramshackle boats across the Mediterranean Sea Migrant flows are down 30 per cent this year after a controversial deal with Libya orchestrated by Marco Minniti involving support for the local coastguard to intercept boats before they leave Libyan waters and for coastal cities to crack down on traffickers But the perception of an uncontrolled “invasion” Once migrants arrive in Italy — and while they wait for their asylum applications to be processed which can take months — they are distributed across the country in reception centres that sometimes become a source of tension with local populations Ms Ceccardi is campaigning to close the main reception centre in Cascina a former farmstay called La Tinaia that houses some 60 refugees and asylum seekers She has vowed to resist any attempt by the Italian government to allocate new migrants to facilities in the town Ms Ceccardi — whose victory was also propelled by a lack of enthusiasm for her centre-left predecessor — sounds more like a crusader for the preservation of western civilisation than a local conservative politician “Someone always loses out: think of the American Indians Shortly after taking office — in the wake of the brutal murder of a Catholic priest in France claimed by Isis — the mayor posted a cartoon depicting a young woman with blond braids kicking a dark-skinned pig clad with a turban who ends up dropping a Koran She later described the cartoon as a statement against “Islamic terrorism” Ms Ceccardi has sought to block access for immigrants to public housing by forcing them to provide documentation from their countries of origin certifying that they do not own property back home — an almost impossible request for many to comply with Out of 71 applications from new arrivals for public housing since she came to power a 35-year-old psychologist having a drink in the town’s main square believes Ms Ceccardi has simply gone too far — especially on immigration who are looking for simple solutions which won’t have any results.” Tuscany or even Italy are about to be overwhelmed by a violent radical minority of foreigners is fanciful foreign residents add up to just 8 per cent of the 60m population up from 1,687 in 2006 but still close to the national average with large Albanian and Senegalese contingents criminality has been dropping across Italy — and in the province of Pisa it was down by 2.5 per cent between 2015 and 2016 But at the Democratic party’s headquarters in the main square acknowledges that what she calls Ms Ceccardi’s “false message” on migrants seems to be working politically “People are convinced that if we kick them all out we will suddenly return to wellbeing,” says Ms Conti “They gave a simple answer but you don’t have to be [Albert] Einstein to realise that it’s not the right one Ms Conti believes social relations in Cascina have already been damaged by the Ceccardi administration “It would be better if they stopped scaring people,” she says “People who have walked calmly in the streets of the town centre until now are moving a few metres to the side if they see a dark-skinned person.” “She cannot come here and evacuate everyone and throw them on the street a 23-year-old Nigerian immigrant and aspiring painter who arrived last year Several of the people at the centre were too frightened to have their photographs taken The Catholic church — inspired by a consistently pro-migrant message from Pope Francis — has been one of the main forces defending the migrants in Cascina the idea is not to lose sight of the fact that there are people behind this problem,” says Father Elvis Ragusa a priest in Cascina’s San Lorenzo alle Corti parish “It’s about looking them in the eyes and welcoming their story.” who describes herself as a “not really practising” Catholic “The Church has the right and duty to send messages of brotherhood and equality,” she says “But if a government has limited resources otherwise we create a social tension that is not good for anyone.” the Five Star candidate who lost to Ms Ceccardi takes comfort in the fact that she has not yet succeeded in rooting out migrants from the town a sign that her strident rhetoric rings hollow “It’s as if I said from tomorrow I will get rid of gravity It’s not 90 people out of 45,000 who are crashing the town.” Yet the “Cascina model” — as Ms Ceccardi calls it — has inspired the Northern League to set its sights on new political targets The Northern League last month opened an office in nearby Pisa It chose a street in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood near the central railway station as its headquarters for next year’s mayoral race local officials and a few national lawmakers beat the immigration drum incessantly we always put Italians first; the PD puts immigrants first and we will send them home,” Edoardo Ziello the Northern League’s town secretary for Pisa Ms Ceccardi added: “The few Pisans who are left are saying saying he had followed a “political rainbow” that brought him to the Northern League from the extreme left in recent decades “It’s about security and legality,” he says I am uneasy walking through the streets of Pisa Back in Cascina some are despondent at the prospect that the Northern League could penetrate further into Tuscany a local co-operative that offers services for disadvantaged groups such as the disabled says political change would be welcome but not if it is a distraction from bigger problems the FT has joined La Stampa newspaper to survey the attitudes of Italian voters In coming weeks the FT will look at just what Italians are thinking ahead of the next test of europopulism And in December: Italy’s voters share their stories Unemployment in the province of Pisa has risen from 4.4 per cent in 2008 to 7.3 per cent in 2016 Although relatively low by Italian standards it is still a big jump “[Ceccardi] campaigned against refugees but the problems are about business adding: “It’s actually the Chinese who are taking our jobs These are people who have a greater entrepreneurial predisposition It’s not the Senegalese or the Eritreans.” a group of elderly leftwing former carpenters sides with the mayor when it comes to the new arrivals from the east: that’s OK because they do the work our kids won’t do they will always be a burden,” says Nevilio Puccini a 92-year-old second world war veteran and one of the African-American soldiers in Cascina during the liberation was sorry to hear that intolerance had better light filled those spaces and the architecture could open up to views of the rolling countryside. His contemporary intervention was more than an aesthetic and structural update, however. Compelled by the environmental benefits of preserving existing buildings, Tuckey made strategic updates to the systems. A new ground-source heat pump reduces the home’s energy footprint, while a new thermal barrier ensures it efficiently maintains the interior temperature. Print Restaurant Critic Reporting from Seattle — The theme here these days is young chefs moving into outlying and up-and-coming neighborhoods to open small restaurants built with lots of passion and elbow grease I ate white bean and duck confit soup at Skillet a roving Airstream trailer parked at a different place every day and spectacular fresh fried fish and chips at a hole-in-the-wall called -- what else with dedicated young chefs -- Matt Dillon and Justin Neidermeyer -- who have each created a restaurant with heart yet both are completely unlike anything in L.A Built circa 1910 by a family of Italian stonemasons the Corson Building needed some tender loving care uncovering a charming fireplace crowned with a lion’s head and added a large new kitchen in the back with a view of the soccer field across the way They built a tall wood-burning oven outside There’s a chicken coop in one corner of the garden We enter the fenced garden through a gate where a bin of apples sits -- what is left from the community cider pressing they’d held the week before Inside is that lovely fireplace and a charming dining room with arched windows and three long communal tables that seat 32 at full capacity is the host and takes our coats and serves us perfect kir apéritifs We look around as we wait for the other guests to arrive the collection of wine bottles arranged on a sideboard (that’s the wine list) and the kitchen with its massive stove and long wooden counter for making pasta are scrubbing scallop shells (they’d bought the scallops live that morning) and plating up a shimmering elk shin aspic and so we boned it out and made this aspic,” Dillon explains later when he introduces the menu in the dining room Next is that wonderful elk shin aspic with an arugula salad and pickled Japanese radishes spigarello (an Italian green) and shaved Brussels sprouts showered with caraway come with sautéed clams in the shell A platter of deep-flavored quail roasted in the wood-burning oven and served with heaps of salsify and parsnip chips is passed next followed by those sweet-tasting scallops cooked in their shells with beer and preserved lemon some of the best gnocchi I’ve had this side of Italy -- small delicate ovals tossed in butter made from the same milk that goes into Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with Washington black truffles shaved over The truffles add more crunch and visual than taste The pièce de résistance is a generous platter of short ribs braised on the bone in some of that cider made the week before accompanied by half-rounds of delicata squash and glorious chanterelles in a honey and cider vinegar gastrique changing places the better to get in on one conversation or another so involved we forget to go visit the cooks in the kitchen Dessert is a dreamy pumpkin clafouti in individual pots topped with what Dillon calls “aerated” cream we have coffee and chocolates from artisan producer Claudio Corallo I’ve been waiting for Cascina Spinasse to open ever since I was in Italy in the Piedmont and heard about this Seattle kid whom “Cinto” Albarello had taken under his wing and taught to make the region’s famous tajarin (tagliatelle made with an astonishing ratio of egg yolks to flour) Justin Neidermeyer didn’t do a three-day stage: He stayed on in Barbaresco for nearly a year Albarello boasted to everyone who came to eat at Antica Torre For a while after Neidermeyer went home to Seattle he was selling his pasta at the farmers market Neidermeyer has taken a decrepit storefront and turned it into a restaurant that feels like one in any of the hill towns outside Alba Look for the logo stenciled onto the glass out front a coat of arms featuring his favorite tools -- a pasta cutting wheel and a ribbed board for making gnocchi What he is making is real Piedmontese food maybe salt-cured anchovies in salsa verde strewn with chopped hard-boiled egg yolk radicchio and rabbit loin with shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano and a dash of real aceto balsamico And then maybe crostini topped with sautéed rabbit liver and a few drops of the sweet vinegar I couldn’t resist the romanesco broccoli in bagna cauda with some local truffles shaved over But the real deal here is the pasta -- handmade golden strands and sauced simply in butter and sage -- and white truffles -- or else in a light meat ragu which tastes exactly the way Albarello used to serve it in Barbaresco and his photograph hangs on the wall as patron saint of Cascina Spinasse.) I could easily order a plate of each pasta We also tried maltagliati with puntarelle (a bitter green) and local black truffles Maltagliati means “badly cut”: It’s unevenly cut pasta shapes And since Neidermeyer made ravioli stuffed with pumpkin that night His dough is so thin it’s practically transparent and drapes like silk around the simple pumpkin filling Because the focus of Cascina Spinasse is pasta But the choices could as easily have been porchetta he’s been getting into gargantuan cuts of meat We could have finished with a Piedmontese cheese we had a half bottle of Moscato d’Asti and one order of Bosc pears and served in a little honey and delicious cream irene.virbila@latimes.com Lifestyle Travel & Experiences Subscribe for unlimited accessSite Map Six months after entering government for the first time the League is drawing on formidable support from Italy’s ‘red belt’ – the swathe of the country that used to vote Communist Hard-working and close-knit, the town’s politics were firmly to the left. After the fall of the Berlin wall, the Italian Communist party gradually morphed into the centre-left Democrats, but the Cascinese, by and large, stayed loyal. Some were unable to compete with the likes of Ikea; others were finished off by the 2008 crash sideboards and chairs were laid out for prospective buyers to inspect a new challenge emerged as refugees who had made the crossing from Libya to Italy’s southern coast began to arrive Matteo Salvini the deputy prime minister and leader of the League has just made Ceccardi one of his chief advisers on security confrontational and usually dressed in a leather jacket and jeans Ceccardi is also the new party boss in Tuscany where a Trumpian “Italians first” message is conquering great swathes of political territory Massa and Siena – traditional bastions of the left – all fell to centre-right and League candidates in local elections in the summer Susanna Ceccardi at a rally in Pisa in June Photograph: Laura Lezza/Getty ImagesAccording to Ceccardi it is the League that now speaks to Italy’s anxieties and insecurities austerity and a migration crisis has swept old political certainties and affiliations away “My grandparents were all communists,” she says So I feel no connection with those ideological battles between communism and fascism During the election campaign here in Cascina They talked constantly about it – and they chose the wrong target because the League is not fascist The theme of dealing with mass immigration has nothing to do with fascism or anti-fascism It’s about a problem people are experiencing in their everyday lives.” About 600,000 refugees and migrants have entered Italy since 2014 a few hundred who made it across the Mediterranean attempt to eke out a living Ceccardi has cancelled a government-funded project to integrate migrants by helping them with accommodation and work opportunities “Those resources are needed for Cascina people,” she says Non-Italians who request social housing are required to provide documentary evidence from their home country the likelihood of gaining access to such documents is close to zero “People elected me to make sure Italians are first on the list for housing,” says Ceccardi Twice a week an army Land Rover tours the town as part of the mayor’s new law and order strategy (one of Ceccardi’s nicknames is Lady Security) with €30,000 (£26,000) spent on new uniforms Free pepper spray canisters have been made available to women on request “You only need to look at the prison population,” says Ceccardi “to see the link between mass immigration and insecurity.” A local “welcome centre” for migrants notorious for the squalor of its conditions “I hoped to find farm work but there is no work here It’s basically just me and God.” Most of his days are spent begging to find money to pay his rent “These songs are not really resistance songs any more,” she says for providing free breakfasts for asylum seekers before mass on Sundays Cascina’s theatre once specialised in experimental productions but the actor and League supporter Andrea Buscemi became its president in August 2016 and changed the programme to standard Italian and European classics Buscemi recently became embroiled in a row over the artistic merit of Pisa’s famous Tuttomondo mural painted in 1989 on the wall of a church by the American artist Keith Haring A colourful portrait of global solidarity – its name means “all the world” – the mural depicts different races reaching out to each other Buscemi condemns the mural as “utterly banal” He also writes of “a strange suicidal tendency pushing Europe (and Italy) not only to open up its doors to whoever it might be but also to forget to safeguard its own culture … In the ‘melting pot’ that follows globalisation I see a precise ideological design being realised: the taking away of particularities of place … turning us all into migrants without a homeland or borders or language.” Keith Haring’s wall painting Tuttomondo in Pisa Photograph: AlamyThese cultural skirmishes have their roots in a dark philosophy of history that senior League figures share with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz “In the history of peoples,” says Ceccardi “there isn’t one civilisation that didn’t have to defend itself Outsiders who were more powerful than they were arrived and defeated them beleaguered civilisations defended themselves The only one which hasn’t is the western civilisation As the Ceccardi revolution has unfolded in his home town “values which were the foundation of a cross-party consensus for 70 years are being demolished minority rights and moral obligation to those in need Western Europe’s first anti-establishment government is a strange hybrid. The original Northern League was formed in the 1990s to defend the interests and prejudices of small businesses in Italy’s north Its cause celebre was a quixotic crusade to free “Padania” a notional northern territory stretching from Umbria to the South Tyrol from the fiscal demands of “Roma ladrona” – “thieving Rome” Its coalition partner, the Five Star Movement (M5S), founded by the comedian Beppe Grillo in 2009 and led by Salvini’s fellow deputy prime minister, Luigi Di Maio has attracted support from both the right and the left Electorally it has thrived in the south and among the young and unemployed whose economic prospects have flatlined for a generation these odd bedfellows have found a vocation combining anti-austerity economics with It was inconceivable that Gaddafi would ever have allowed huge numbers of people to travel through Libya to cross to Italy as a means to get to Europe from Africa and the Middle East slash public spending and reassure the financial markets A recession and soaring youth unemployment was the inevitable result of what one critic described as Monti’s “austeritarian” approach The technocratic gamble – in effect a suspension of the normal democratic process – had far-reaching consequences “Both the big parties on the centre left and centre right [Forza Italia and the Democratic party] willingly stepped aside,” says Baldini “to allow Monti to form this unelected government That meant that the only real opposition parties left were the Northern League and Five Star Put together the need to cope with the huge rise in the numbers of migrants and the imposition of austerity in this way and you had a perfect storm in the making.” The wildly unpopular Monti was succeeded by Matteo Renzi of the centre-left Democratic party in 2013. He promised to end austerity but did not and failed to persuade the rest of Europe to properly share the burden of the migration crisis When he called a constitutional referendum to consolidate his power and lost Marine Le Pen with Matteo Salvini Photograph: Antonio Masiello/Getty ImagesA large majority of Italians back Rome in its confrontation with the EEU over a budget that could lead to the bloc’s fiscal rules being breached In order to fulfil manifesto promises to lower the retirement age introduce a flat tax and finance a new “citizen’s income” of €780 a month the coalition has committed to a budget deficit of 2.4% alarmed at the size of Italy’s public debt and lack of growth has flatly rejected the plan and threatened to impose financial sanctions Sabres have been rattled on both sides. This month, the EU’s economics chief, Pierre Moscovici the ratings agency Moody’s has downgraded the country’s debt to one rung above junk status But these are precisely the enemies that the new government wishes to make Latest polls indicate that the coalition partners enjoy a combined 60% approval rating Since entering the government as the junior partner in May the League has virtually doubled its approval ratings to 36% and is Italy’s dominant force a marketing consultant and M5S activist in the town of Ascoli Piceno in central Italy says: “What we are attempting here is the most far-reaching experiment in the world This is taking on the financialised capitalism that has held sway for so long “When was the last time a government commanded this kind of approval And it’s a government that is constantly under attack by the mainstream media.” Since May, Salvini has energetically pursued numerous high-profile confrontations abroad and at home. In June, using his powers as minister of the interior, he caused an international outcry by closing Italy’s ports to NGO-operated ships carrying migrants and refugees In the same month he denounced the mayor of a Calabrian town who had actively welcomed migrants Other minorities have been targeted. Using a favourite turn of phrase, Salvini has threatened to “bulldoze” a Roma camp in Rome and pledged to conduct a census of the community in Italy as a whole. Last month he threatened to “return with the bulldozer” to San Lorenzo, a leftwing quarter of the capital, following the murder of a 16-year-old girl. “In Rome, as elsewhere in Italy,” said Salvini, “we will have an emergency programme of evictions. We will hurt the drug dealers. We will make sure the rules are respected.” The violence of the language echoed a notorious election campaign speech in which the League leader said Italy needed a “mass cleansing, street by street, district by district”. No one died in the attack and Traini apologised in court for his actions, saying: “While in prison, I have understood that the colour of one’s skin has nothing to do with anything.” But Salvini blamed the shootings on “out-of-control immigration … which leads to social conflict”. That response led the then head of the Italian parliament, Laura Boldrini, to comment: “What happened at Macerata shows that to incite hatred and legitimise fascism, as Salvini does, has real consequences.” As the most powerful figure in the government, says DiMatteo, Salvini is in a position to perfect the role of strongman. “He is presenting himself as the father of all Italians, infantilising them in the process. And he is legitimising and fuelling their anger to a dangerous degree.” Italy was the proud host of the Treaty of Rome in 1957, which created the European Economic Community. Until only a few years ago it remained one of the most Europhile countries in the EU. But the nationalist genie is out of the bottle. With alarming speed, Italy appears to be transitioning from the “austeritarian” past embodied by Monti to an authoritarian present presided over by Salvini. “Wherever this goes,” says Baldini, “the technocratic option of 2011 is not available now, given the election result. Italy is hitched to this rollercoaster for better or for worse.” This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025. To eliminate these labor-related issues and improve upon its operational efficiency, Cascina installed four UR5 six-axis robot arms from Universal Robots, supplied by Italian distributor Alumotion, on four of its packaging lines handling products for large-scale distribution While three of the lines are flexible—handling 96- or 192-egg case sizes—the fourth is a dedicated line that packs cases with 1,400 cartoned eggs Among the features that attracted Moretti to the UR5 robot arm were its light weight (18 kg) and its ability to operate without safety guarding “It was important for us to be able to install the robot in areas with limited space to retain the full flexibility we need to be able to react to the demands of the market,” he says “This allows us to produce more than 220 commercial options in different formats depending on the type of packaging required Being able to install one or more robots on our production line without having to sacrifice the other stations because of a robot’s size and Alumotion’s expertise enabled us to achieve this tough objective The fact that the robots from Universal Robots are also able to work alongside our human operators without us having to install specific protective barriers—a unique feature of these robots—turned out to be the key for us.” a case-erecting machine integrated with the UR5 erects the box and the robot picks cartons filled with 10 eggs from a conveyor leading from the carton packer and places them into the open case at 15,000 eggs/hr Programming for each case-packing station is customized to meet the specific needs and level of automation required Each robot waits for a signal that indicates that a filled carton is in place with signals double-checked and filtered to avoid false positives the robot places the cartons into the boxes in layers A force control feature on the robot ensures that the eggs will not be broken if something goes wrong during the process we made the most of the abilities of the UR5 robot in terms of its extension so that it could reach the entire work area and carry out its movements quickly but at the same time delicately—absolutely necessary for packaging eggs With little space available to install the robot on the existing production line we optimized every route based on the robot’s position to ensure that there was no interference with the operators enabling them to work on the output station next to the one where the robot is working at the same time “We also designed and built the pneumatically controlled gripper for handling the egg cartons in a way that will ensure safety without having to install protective barriers in line with regulations.” and with the innovative technological solution adopted in the robots that enables them to stop on their own at the slightest touch combined with the adoption of a gripper that has no dangerous elements we have been able to install a robot into our facility in compliance with all necessary safety standards.” Ease of programming is also a benefit for Cascina The UR5 robot is programmed on-site via the Universal Robots user interface—the Polyscope GUI—available on the touchscreen panel; no offline activity is required The system’s teaching mode allows the user to move the robot arm by hand to program complicated movements on the fly “This makes it very easy to design and apply the special filling trajectories that let the robot put the eggs into the boxes with a high speed and very low clearance,” say Universal Robots the program that fills the box with 1,400 eggs into nine layers (six placing positions per each layer) required the creation of 54 special trajectories and we were able to do this in just one day.” To coordinate functions with other machines on the packaging line the UR5 communicates by way of Ethernet and Modbus/TCP All stations are monitored by the production manager and the quantity of eggs per each carton according customers’ needs the robot signals for the case to be conveyed away from the station Because all four filling stations release their filled cases onto the same downstream conveying line it is necessary to synchronize the stations in order to avoid collisions The logistics that handle the release priorities are implemented in each robot into a parallel thread While the main program takes care of moving the eggs this thread checks that no upcoming cases are approaching and counts the boxes that are entering a critical portion of the downstream line close to the point where the case-packing station is placed When the thread decides that a box can be released With the installation of its first four robots Cascina is sold on automated case packing with the UR5 “We are convinced that the collaborative robot solution is extremely useful for facilities like ours that have constraints on flexibility which make traditional robotic solutions difficult to implement The results obtained so far are excellent—so much so that we expect a return on our initial investment in less than a year with the additional advantage of having further refined and improved the quality of our packaging processes.” See a video on Universal Robots.  Text description provided by the architects. The project of Mario Cucinella Architects includes the construction of three of the seven residential towers inside the Expo Village, designed by Euromilano, within the redevelop of the Masterplan Cascina Merlata in Milan. The three buildings are located in the area north of the Masterplan and they will be used as Expo Village in a first phase, then to be converted into apartments of social housing. Site PlanThe tiered system allows light to penetrate the central space and lower levels, opening views and perspectives and ensuring large sized terraces. To this end, a solar power  analysis was conducted, evaluating the number of hours of direct sunlight per day on each surface: based on these variables, particular attention was paid to the orientation and size of transparent façade surfaces to optimize daylighting in each of the interiors. © EuromilanoThe system of terraced floors determines a different configuration of apartments on each level Internal atriums have been inserted to generate the system of accesses to the different residential units at different levels which are divisible and can be used by adjoining apartments The ground floor is an accessible and bright communal space suited to accommodate green areas and spaces for collective use Despite the limited budget for the project local construction agreements have allowed for the buildings to achieve Class A classification the inclusion of high efficiency systems (solar panels air handling units) combined with highly insulated envelope (façade coating low emissivity double glazing) will reduce the annual consumption for winter heating You'll now receive updates based on what you follow Personalize your stream and start following your favorite authors If you have done all of this and still can't find the email Architects Laurent Didier and Stefano Cerolini shared with us their proposal Cascina Merlata, for a competition in Milan, Italy. More images and architect’s description after the break. The site could be considered as a limit area between the built existing city in the south of “Via Gallarate” and the new park which characterizes the urban integrated planning of “Cascina Merlata”. The presence of the historical building of “Cascina Merlata” suggested the study of the rural Milanese house, which has shown the court, opened or closed, as the common element around which the life of all the inhabitants was organized and developed. Courtesy of Laurent Didier and Stefano CeroliniRe-thinking this concept, the court is able to define a big potential of relations and, at the same time, to propose different levels of privacy according to its use. So the project is born, planimetrically, around the space of the big inner court, designed to be not only a “square” for the apartments and the inhabitants, but even and mostly an urban filter area between the existing city and the park to the north of the area. In fact, the closed shape of a plan organized around the court is overcome by lifting the two opposite short sides of the (monolithic) building containing the different housing typologies. sectionThrough this strong plastic movement, the project wants to propose itself, not just only in a formal sense, as a gateway to the park and to the new area of Cascina Merlata, including within its perimeter the pedestrian and cycling track. The housing typologies, that are organized at various levels, are served through a gallery distribution, which wants to exploit the relational potential offered by the presence of the inner big court. Dynamism and communication are the regulating criteria of the project: the possibility of movement is not only linked to the necessity of distribution from and to the apartments but has to be considered as an opportunity in terms of physical and ideal communication. situationArchitects: Laurent Didier Marion Lacroix Project Area: 19,500 sqm Project Year: 2011 It’s one of the most brilliant intuitions of contemporary urban planning: a community’s gaze can take care of and monitor public and collective places to such a degree as to make them spaces that are safe accessible and usable for everyone without limits This seems to be the reflection that marked the starting point for studio C+S to design the square between the R11 residential towers on the northern edge of Cascina Merlata’s Villaggio Highrise Made with white Prun stone and therefore characterised by a precise and inescapable material identity it connects two residential buildings by acting at the same time as a ‘door’ to access the park which complements the transition between the urban setting and the green area The square recreates the elegant intimacy of a Venetian campo and enjoys the protection of the gaze of those who live in the residential towers thanks to elevations strongly cadenced by full-height windows studio C+S chose to divide the plot into two towers initially conceived as a single body at the client’s request and effectively give the Cascina Merlata area an open sustainable and accessible space to counter the idea and the risk of generating a gated community within one of the largest real estate developments in Europe fourteen and twelve floors for a total of 103 units (all sold at affordable rates in record time after the start of the construction site) The ground floor houses common areas and services for the residents such as a bicycle storage room The material choices that connote the square dialogue with the residential volumes: the white Prun stone up to the first level creates continuity between the horizontal and vertical plane; From the second floor up the use of a glass mosaic is a tribute to Gio Ponti’s interiors giving dynamism to the elevations depending on the light that day and the weather the project pioneered the idea of inserting hybrid and common spaces in Milanese residential complexes and brings with it a considerable dose of experimentation consistent with the reflections on living that Milan has made in the last decade and that it continues to make to this day No less important is the attention that C+S dedicated to the goal of reducing emissions and consumption: from class A units with underfloor district heating and geothermal cooling controlled ventilation and photovoltaic systems to the choice of materials for the finishes selected for their durability and recyclability over time and website in this browser for the next time I comment Abitare.it e Style.corriere.it rifiutando tutti i cookie di profilazione ad eccezione di quelli tecnici necessari Naviga il sito di Abitare.it con pubblicità profilata e senza abbonarti By subscribing you will reject all but technical cookies on Iodonna.it By clicking "accept" you will allow to process your personal data by us and third parties and be able to browse Abitare.it website without a subscription An open international ideas contest – featuring a €10,000 prize fund – is seeking concepts for new housing at the abandoned Cascina Lossano complex in rural Italy [Deadline: 22 September 2023] The Rural Housing competition – organised by TerraViva Competitions – invites architects designers and students to re-imagine the abandoned agricultural farmstead near the village of Sant’Alessio con Vialone between Milan and Pavia The call for concepts aims to identify a range of solutions for new housing on the site which features a three-storey manor house a brick porch and a stable block which will all be converted garage and warehouse on the site may meanwhile be demolished According to the brief: ‘The challenge is to transform Cascina Lossano into a new housing complex capable of serving the needs of the present while respecting the history of its past ‘It is required to preserve the original volumes of the former historical buildings the lower structure of the farmers’ homes and the brick porch devoid of historical relevance and showing a deep state of deterioration giving each designer the opportunity to propose their total or partial reconstruction such as the Aia and all the surrounding green areas including the old rusty “pergola” can be transformed and redesigned in order to integrate common functions and recreational facilities.’ Cascina Lossano is a disused farmstead which dates back to the eighteenth century and includes some newer buildings from the 1960s which are in a poor state of repair The latest contest seeks proposals for a complete transformation of the site which enhances ‘its most characteristic features while proposing new contemporary interior spaces.’ The Rural Housing competition invites students makers and activists to ‘define new ways of living in the Italian countryside through the adaptive reuse of traditional constructions.’ Concepts will be expected to transform Cascina Lossano into a new housing complex ‘capable of serving the needs of the present while respecting the history of its past.’ Submissions must include two digital A2 panels and up to 250 words of written description Judges will include Philip Kolevsohn of ATOMAA in Cape Town Coraly Mazzucchelli from Eckersley O’Callaghan in Paris and Franca Carassai from London-based Campbell Cadey The overall winner will receive a €5,000 top prize while a second prize of €2,000 and third prize of €1,000 will also be awarded along with four ‘golden mentions’ each worth €500 Tags Hutchison Ports is recruiting a design team for its new £9 million… An open international contest is being held for a major €27.5 million… An international design and build contest is being held for 25 new… The UK Research and Innovation Science and Technology Facilities Council (UKRI-STFC) has… The cartoon is long gone, but, like a miracle, one of Michelangelo's smaller sketches for his great battle picture has emerged from a private collection and is to be auctioned at Christie's on 5 July It is a gnarled and sensually grasping study of a naked man's back and buttocks Michelangelo was about 30 when he drew these furrows of flesh capturing the power of a man's body with an eye and a hand that are so strong yet so tender How is this a drawing for a battle scene? Where's the battle, where are the weapons, the armour, in The Battle of Cascina? Michelangelo or someone who understood him extremely well found in a Florentine chronicle one of the few episodes in medieval warfare that involved mass male nudity the men got undressed and went for a swim instead of constructing fortifications When the alarm sounded they all had to rush out of the water and go to arms with nudes heaving themselves out of the river and rushing in all directions to grab clothes and weapons The nude to be sold at Christie's is one of his ideas for what blossomed into a spectacle of contorted figures I believe that in drawings such as the one going under the hammer in July the young Michelangelo set out his claim to a similar kind of personal unique vision – and he does it by putting his private self on public display Michelangelo is famous for being brave – defying a Pope, working in arduous conditions under the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to assert and risk himself in a way utterly unlike most artists before the Romantic age behaved This studio providing a renewed domestic character that allows its occupants to savour the sweeping vistas of the vineyard-covered valley below Jonathan Tuckey Design's approach aimed to rediscover and reinstate this character and its connection with the landscape and providing a clear distinction between working and living spaces a new roof was constructed using the skeleton of the former structure It embraces the original hayloft roof timbers This approach of layering new components over the old became a pivotal design principle The studio’s commitment to "elegant appropriation" is highlighted in Cascina's renovation This concept involves taking elements designed for a specific task and enabling them to fulfil that task in a different way thereby adding a new layer of narrative to the project The appropriation of the former roof structure in Cascina exemplifies this concept demonstrating how old elements can be reconfigured physically and figuratively to renew and reconfigure structures Sustainability in Cascina extends beyond material reuse The renovation includes the implementation of renewable energy sources such as a ground source heat pump and solar panels on the pitched roof By bringing the building back to its former agrarian appearance and improving its thermal envelope The choice to insulate the building from the inside and apply granular render to the external walls not only improves overall insulation but also reveals the occasional faces of brick Local chestnut wood was chosen for the external shutters and joinery not only for its visual appeal but also for its low-carbon footprint This choice also ties the building elements into the landscape showcasing a holistic approach to sustainability and material selection The reconfiguration of Cascina's interior spaces was essential to create a more harmonious and functional living environment The volumes of the complex are nestled within the sloping topography of the site and thoughtful adjustments were made to improve circulation and open the space A reconfigured stair in the entrance hall establishes a stronger connection between different levels The upper floors were rearranged around a stepped double-level hallway to enhance the ceiling height in the entrance and living areas on the ground floor The first floor accommodates a gallery that leads to the upper-floor hayloft a light-filled studio with captivating views of treetops and the Alps discreetly tucked behind a wall of umber timber where original brick vaults seem to levitate above New windows were strategically added to the north and east facades allowing an abundance of natural light and framing unexpected views and metal lattice shutters complement the detailing of the restored facades seamlessly integrating old and new design elements a new shaded veranda now faces the pool and garden while the garage is buried into the landscape to the north of the house and covered in planting further blending the building with its surroundings and a deep understanding of the building's historical character the project successfully revitalises a 200-year-old farmstead The renewed connection between the building and its landscape the seamless blending of old and new materials and the enhancement of energy efficiency all contribute to an extraordinary example of successful adaptive reuse Jonathan This article was published more than 11 years ago The Pasta Rossa and Pasta Bianca at La Caascina Ristorante.Kevin Van Paassen/The Globe and Mail a homey and hopelessly unfashionable Abruzzese spot at Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue West clearly did not learn a few of the most important tenets of North American restaurant cooking when he immigrated here six years ago that flake tuna is served only in tuna casseroles and tuna sandwiches and in self-hating little cafeteria salads that are made with gummy fusilli and blizzards of diced red pepper He did not learn that undercooked vegetables are vastly preferred here to long-cooked ones He did not learn that restaurant food should only rarely be brown or lukewarm He didn't learn that dessert must be fancy or gooey or better still Del Rosso even serves scrambled eggs at dinnertime – a thing that is just not done outside chop suey parlours and restaurants called Denny's Del Rosso is the chef at a very good restaurant He makes home food – Mom-style farmhouse cooking from the seaside mountains of Abruzzo Del Rosso tossed that flake tuna with sweet crisp discs of thinly sliced carrot – nearly the only lightly cooked vegetable I encountered at the restaurant – and olive oil that he'd infused with hauntingly floral wild lemon juice from fruit that one of his paesani brings in from Italy On another night he cooked shredded zucchini into a greenish super-concentrated pap with saffron threads richly pink hunks of rainbow trout flesh – a dish so strange and so flavourful that my date and I couldn't stop marvelling at it even 72 hours later Del Rosso pairs soft stewed eggplant with monkfish with hunks of green beans that taste as much like nuts as of vegetable (long-cooking brings that out in them) and with cherry tomatoes that he cooks down to maximum sweet juiciness cooked for what any classically trained chef would consider far too long with oil and black truffle bits so that the egg curd's turned firm and brownish The eggs come mixed up with dun-red beans that the chef has simmered well past the usual creamy firmness And all of those dishes were mere antipasti from La Cascina's extraordinary 12-taste spread – an array of cheeses olives and of six little vegetable-based dishes that changes almost nightly a hill town a couple of hours east of Rome Twelve years ago he opened a farmhouse restaurant near his hometown an energetic and immensely personable force (She was Tim Hortons co-founder Ron Joyce's personal assistant before La Cascina.) but a lot of the neighbourhood didn't get it with simple (read: cheap-looking) chandeliers directly across the street from a Pusateri's People came in expecting fettucine alfredo and pretty-looking dishes Jordan began bombarding me with messages on Twitter this summer They're served family style – a plate of meat or pasta is generally good for two His carbonara came in a creamy tangle on a broad white platter two kinds of cheese and nubs of cured pork My date that night has spent a good deal of time in Rome apparently.) The pasta was decadently chewy and creamy and cheesy and set off with an aggressive hit of black pepper It was an extraordinarily good carbonara – the best I've had this side of Italy You could see my date losing herself as she ate salt and a touch of garlic in a wicked-hot pan "This is the most Italian Italian food I've had in Toronto." The chef's spinach contorno is just great spinach with oil and salt and a skiff of that pecorino His salad is a Mom salad: green-and-red leaf lettuce good wine vinegar; it is refreshingly refreshing It was cooked the way meat is often cooked in Italy: much would have been more appealing if the favas as my Italian uncle might say after dinner Jordan brought those cookies out with two little glasses of Amaro d'Abruzzo – herbal She'd shaken the bitters to a froth with ice "People in Canada don't really do this," she said Report an editorial error Report a technical issue Editorial code of conduct Welcome to The Globe and Mail’s comment community. That’s because Naughty Dog actually face-scanned Cascina Caradonna for the character model, as revealed in the YouTube vlog embedded below Get beyond Caradonna’s infectious enthusiasm and there’s actually quite a lot of meat in this video as she talks about the process behind her inclusion and even shares some side-by-side comparisons She also touches upon the darker side of the gaming community as she reels off online comments criticising the character and subsequently her appearance [source youtube.com] Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them Too many who casually commit hate crime on social media and think they can get away with it due to anonymity There have been a fair few that have been sent to prison for their frequent nastiness on platforms such as Twitter Sometimes their face is shown on the national news for all to see Regardless it's very sad to see that behaviour @LieutenantFatman What @LieutenantFatman The Internet turns people into idiots unfortunately I’m convinced that almost all of the vile stuff people post online wouldn’t get said in real life I sense an upcoming Twitter comment from her @Xaessya ? @get2sammyb Doubt that They do it on facebook in front of all of their friends and family So did she and Ashley Johnson have to mo-cap that scene together @kyleforrester87 I would be really interested to see ND do some sort of space themed game @ApostateMage There are actually some good videos explaining how they did it I remember someone here actually saying ND screwed up in the character’s nose lol Ashley Johnson has come a long way from being the Annie remake from Growing Pains @LieutenantFatman You’re going the opposite direction of me I’d love to see them do fantasy a la The Witcher 3 and Elder Scrolls For some reason I can’t get into space-themed games but absolutely adore fantasy worlds @LieutenantFatman yeah I'd like to see them do something like Prometheus @LieutenantFatman You're forgetting they did Pretty sure several of the levels had our fave marsupial in outer space I do seem to recall him wearing a jet pack in CB2 @kyleforrester87 2018 champions.le blue.word up son @LieutenantFatman they have the story telling and tech to pull off surpassing the witcher only thing they don't have is the open world rpg experience but iam sure that if guerrilla games can do it off naughty dog can to @get2sammyb vive la france.sammy.my france is the 2018 champions.Hahaha word up son @playstation1995 😂 One edit for your post is enough to say that France won but yea vive la France The actual actress is way more attractive than the character model based on her @GKO900 hahaha.im so excited.france is the best.finally.hahaha 2018 champions.word up son @get2sammyb Hearing how they did it makes you appreciate the animation even more @playstation1995 Word uppppppppp except the part where the internet trolls start criticizing her appearance) She has such an energetic and fun personality I hope this opens some future doors for her I actually prefer my game models to be randoms like this Seeing Norman Reedus in Death Stranding or Ellen Page in Beyond Two Souls or Rami Malek in Until Dawn is cool and all but I find no less enjoyment when I play a game that models characters after unknowns I think it has the potential to detract if a famous actor appears as a character in the game Can you see Norman Reedus and not think of Daryl from the TV show The Walking Dead I have a hard enough time being pulled out of the immersion when I hear a familiar voice actor It took me a while to get it out my head while playing Horizon Zero Dawn that I wasn’t playing as Chloe Price @playstation1995 well done Glad you beat the Croatia as we England should have done so and met you in the final @3MonthBeef Disgusting behaviour @PS_Nation vive la france.2018 world champion.word up son Se ci bon world champion.merci.word up son @Jriibz She's not even the actress; they're just using her likeness The part is being played by Shannon Woodward She's very good looking and I don't think Naughty Dog's artists did her justice from what we've seen very few Western studios these days have the balls to put a beautiful woman in their game because they're afraid of getting criticized by idiots who don't buy their games anyway Which is why I give credit to a studio like CD Projekt Red for just making games and telling everybody 'hey ND's artists are much more capable than this but 90% of Western studios have gone down the 'realism' rabbit hole And sadly I'm also seeing this garbage creep into Japanese games that have a Western appeal and Resident Evil 2 remake is my most anticipated game by far are absolutely horrendous and I blame it on going for 'realism.' Get that trash out of games @playstation1995 mot jusqu'à son fils!! My wife and I just stared at that photo and a dozen pics of her and Google and can't find a match We watch WW and I thought it might be Clementine but my wife said no Never in a million years would gave guessed Elsie looking at that pic @rjejr I think in reading a lot of these comments The character Dina’s voice actress is professional actress Shannon Woodward from WW The character Dina’s facial appearance is based on the girl in the photo (Cascina Caradonna) and video (the photo actually doesn’t look like her that much compared to her in the video) who is a relative unknown apparently the way she talks about it on the video it makes it sound like she’s a high school student or something who kinda got lucky to work with ND to be the face for Dina In the video she even addresses how weird it was to see the game with her face but someone else’s (Woodward’s) voice coming out of it @Th3solution Thanks for that I couldn't watch more than 1 minute of the video though whatever." I just can't stand youthful talking to close into the camera exuberance @rjejr Lol Especially at the end when she reads some of the comments of people being quite unkind about her appearance calling her “ugly” and that they “hate her already” and she seems to just laugh it off which is really impressive as most girls worry about how they look too much I love when americans have names that sound italian but are impossible to find in Italy. If you translate Cascina Caradonna you get Farmhouse Dearwoman.. @mkonji you got a problem with bigger noses @Th3solution "but you gotta admire her enthusiasm" can I admire her enthusiasm w/o actually having to watc hher talk just let me read the crib notes or something there's only so much enthusiasm I can bare @naruball they do it because there is no repercussion to them doing it even if it's not anonymous they can just block or ignore any responses they don't like and they don't actually have to face anyone they are attacking social media is one of the best and worse aspects of the internet @3MonthBeef Doesn't change my mind if you like the character model that's fine @get2sammyb I wish that were true I've been on the real-life receiving end of spewed hatred I've had friends beaten walking home from the bar @Gamer83 I dunno They've obviously made some very minor adjustments @Gamer83 Yea it's a taboo to make video game female characters look more attractive these days @kyleforrester87 mine is bigger.. The most boring character in the game so far @whywai88 I believe what you're experiencing is the uncanny valley as the examples you provided are real faces being used in an increasingly realistic medium @LieutenantFatman no one should ever go to jail for nasty comments.. Just realised this article is years old lol @get2sammyb completely agree I used to think it was the anonymity of it but clearly everyone is themselves online these days It's knowing that there are no consequences for what they say more like knowing they won't get punched in the face like they would if they said some of this vile stuff to someone on the street @kyleforrester87 With all of the Savage Starlight references in both TLOU games and in Uncharted 4 I fully expect a sci-fi ND game is on the way I would argue they used the "Likeness" of a person and change other parts if that character to brake gender stereotype's @AhmadSumadi a lot of people dont know her very first role was in LionHeart with Jean Claude Van Damme lol Im a big jcvd fan and rewatch most all his films Saw the sName in the credits one day and was like...wait is that the same...lol @Richnj perfect response Actresses are being rendered now and they’re using real people Some gamers want sculpted women who look flawless and that’s cool But when they use an actress’s real face then I don’t see what the fuss is about She’s much better looking in real life that’s for sure it’s certainly a claim to fame and a very rare opportunity @Elex Using a really cliche story idea for Ellie to be so angry -1000 I honestly expected to be a bit more impressed by the character models in the sequel but just not as impressive as I was expecting And some are definitely better than others Oh god don't let the incel army find her Twitter handle...(Didn't think this would be my first comment haha) @LieutenantFatman hate crime on social media hahahaha @LieutenantFatman oh come on Would it be nice if everybody was kind online You cant stop people being jerks and attempting to do so is a step too close to fascism for my taste @Kafkaesque Ok People are arrested for hate crimes online frequently plenty of high profile cases are reported on in the media It's easy to check that information if you're not aware but it happens all the time I'm not interested in disputing well documented facts Show Comments Hold on there, you need to login to post a comment..
