The technology group Wärtsilä will supply a natural gas fuelled 110 MW flexible power plant to Cassano d’Adda in Italy
Wärtsilä’s fast-starting internal combustion engine technology will be used to balance the power system and ensure its stability when the share of renewables is increased
and it will be delivered on a full engineering
and construction (EPC) basis in partnership with Italian engineering group Cefla
The order is booked by Wärtsilä in January 2022
the company managing the power plants for the A2A
participated in the auctions for Italy’s Capacity Market scheduled to commence in 2022
The Capacity Market will ensure system stability as the country’s share of fluctuating solar and wind power increases
the national transmission system operator (TSO)
and electricity producers undertake to deliver energy upon request
Fast-starting and stopping capability is essential for providing effective and flexible power system balancing when inherently variable renewable energy is introduced to the system
The Wärtsilä power generation solution based on internal combustion engines will provide this flexibility as Italy undertakes its 2030 national energy
“Italy is on its journey toward a more sustainable energy system
Wärtsilä’s technology provides the thermal balancing needed to support this transition
and is best-in-class for power optimisation
along with the high efficiency and reliability of the Wärtsilä engines
supports the customer in decarbonising its operations,” commented Kenneth Engblom
The new plant will operate with six Wärtsilä 50SG gas engines
Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for autumn 2022
and the plant is expected to become operational in 2023
this will be the largest power plant in Italy operating on gas fuelled internal combustion engines
Natural gas is the cleanest of all fossil fuels
and is considered an important transitional fuel as the development of zero-carbon future alternatives continues
Cefla, with its Engineering Business Unit
is one of today's most important players in the energy sector in Italy, with extensive experience in the engineering and construction of high efficiency power plants with important references for similar projects both in Italy and Germany
Wärtsilä has a strong presence in Italy
the company was awarded a contract by Metaenergiaproduzione
to supply six flexible power plants with a combined output of 380 MW
to date Wärtsilä has delivered 1,411 MW of power plant capacity to Italy
of which 709 MW are currently covered by Wärtsilä long-term service agreements
The company has a delivery centre in Trieste

Text description provided by the architects. Cassano D’Adda Music Center is not only a building for improving musical culture, but it’s going to become the location for all the cultural activities of the city.
Music Center will be built in the city of Cassano d’Adda, between Milan and Bergamo, on the banks of the River Adda. Despite its small size, Cassano has a catchment area of approximately 160 000 people, so this project is meant to have a territorial role.
© Filippo RomanoThe area is near the main street from Milan to Treviglio, a few minutes from the center and from the beautiful Villa Borromeo, in a suburb characterized by constructions without value.
© Filippo RomanoThe building project wants to create a new urban center, a locus for the city and the neighborhood.
The placement of buildings in the master plan follows the lines of penetration of the area, it divides the lot into a private zone surrounded by residential buildings and a public one with the Music Center overlooking the square. This external space is composed of a few elements like a terraced parterre that connects the street to the building ground height and an arboreal volume in front of it, that works as an outer limit for the square itself.
© Filippo RomanoThe program is very complex, including different functions and spaces for a real flexibility of use: the foyer can accommodate, for example, events, exhibitions or little concerts like an internal square.
Longitudinal SectionNear the lobby, a 300-seat auditorium and commercial spaces (like a cafeteria or a music store) without interior partitions can expand its activity in the adjacent spaces and operate independently from the Music Center.
© Filippo RomanoA music school is located on the second floor, strictly connected with others functions and spaces.
The building is a compact volume of three floors and a basement on a rectangular base.
Scheme of the plazaThe compactness of press-formed perforated white metal covering of the first two levels, white painted, contrasts with a very porous interior. The foyer is a great hollow space that connect different levels and brings together all the activities. From this space comes out the aslope volume of the auditorium, defined by its interior and exterior coating made of white wooden splints.
© Filippo RomanoThis kind of porousness chosen for the interiors is the same for the black volume of the music school, which compactness is carved by six patios that bring light and air to the classrooms, allocated next to them like an external projections of the interior spaces. This disposition create a multipurpose connecting space.
© Filippo RomanoThe project has been developed after a participation process that involved local authorities
The Center has been conceived as a house of music open to the community
a public place where people can meet and interact

Roger Kluge surprises sprinters to win Stage 17 at Giro d'ItaliaAPCASSANO D'ADDA
Italy (AP) — German rider Roger Kluge used his track cycling experience to take the biggest victory of his road career
winning the 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday with a well-timed counterattack
Steven Kruijswijk of the Netherlands had little trouble protecting his 3-minute lead over Esteban Chaves on the mostly flat 196-kilometer (122-mile) leg from Molveno to Cassano d'Adda
Kluge responded to an attack from Filippo Pozzato in the final kilometer (mile) and easily overtook the Italian on the final straight to hold off the sprinting favorites
Kluge had time to raise his right arm in celebration before he crossed the line in slightly more than 4½ hours
Giacomo Nizzolo of Trek-Segafredo finished second and Nikias Arndt of Team Giant-Alpecin crossed third
The 30-year-old Kluge won a silver medal in the points race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics
He also took silver in the omnium at this year's track worlds and a gold in the omnium at the 2010 European Championships
"I've been a pro for six years and this is the big victory I have been looking for," Kluge said
closing the gap for him but I saw a possibility to get away
The victory comes after Kluge's IAM Cycling team announced it would fold after failing to find a second sponsor
"Yesterday we were very disappointed to hear that our team is going to stop at the end of the year but we decided to stick together and it's wonderful to come up with a victory to make it up for our disappointment."
Stage 18 on Thursday is the race's longest
a 244-kilometer (152-mile) leg from Muggio to Pinerolo that starts out flat but concludes with some steep hills and a dangerous descent
"I knew this was my last easy day before some hard stages coming up," Kruijswijk said
"(Tomorrow) is a stage with a hard and spectacular finale after a tricky downhill
There are also two more serious mountain stages Friday and Saturday before the 99th edition of the race ends Sunday in Turin
