The snapped cable brought both the upward and downward-going cable cars to a halt as they traversed Monte Faito in the town of Castellammare di Stabia. The upward cable car eventually crashed, causing the fatalities and injury, while eight tourists and an operator were evacuated from the downward cable car, Naples Prefect Michele de Bari said.
"The traction cable broke. The emergency brake downstream worked, but evidently not the one on the cabin that was entering the station,'' said Castellammare Mayor Luigi Vicinanza.
Italy's alpine rescue, along with firefighters, police and civil protection services responded to the accident.
The accident occurred just a week after the cable car, popular for its views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, reopened for the season.
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences for the victims and their families and said she was in touch with rescuers. She was in Washington, DC, where she met with US President Donald Trump.

Four boats capsized in a sudden storm at a tourist spot in southwestern China
More than 80 people fell into a river when strong winds hit the scenic area in Guizhou province late Sunday afternoon
The boats capsized after a sudden rain and hail storm on the upper reaches of the Wu River
a man could be seen performing CPR on another person
while one of the vessels drifted upside down
Initial reports said two tourist boats had capsized
but state media said on Monday that four boats were involved
and the seven crew members were able to save themselves
Guizhou's mountains and rivers are a major tourism draw
and many Chinese were travelling during a five-day national holiday that ended Monday
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for all-out efforts to find the missing and care for the injured
the official Xinhua News Agency said on Sunday
Xi underscored the importance of strengthening safety at tourist attractions
large public venues and residential communities
as well as for the rush of people returning at the end of major holidays
CCTV said the capsized boats had a maximum capacity of about 40 people each and were not overloaded
An eyewitness told state-owned Beijing News the waters were deep but that some people had managed to swim to safety
the storm had come suddenly and a thick mist obscured the surface of the river
It was after their tiny plane crashed into the Bolivian jungle earlier this week that their ordeal really began
the aircraft flipped over into a lagoon infested with anacondas and alligators
plunging the pilot and four passengers — including a 6-year-old boy — into a harrowing 36 hours spent clinging to the plane’s wreckage before being rescued yesterday in the northeast of this Andean nation
The doctor who treated the five survivors told The Associated Press today all were conscious and in stable condition
with only the young boy's 37-year-old aunt still hospitalised for an infected gash to her head
The rest were discharged and recovering from dehydration
bruises and insect bites all over their bodies
that they weren't attacked and left for dead,” Dr Luis Soruco
director of the hospital where the survivors were delivered in Bolivia’s tropical Beni province
said by phone after sending the pilot and two of the women home with a strong course of antibiotics
emerged yesterday to tell the story that has transfixed many Bolivians — a rare piece of uplifting news for a nation badly in need of it after years of a spiralling economic and political crisis
“The mosquitoes wouldn’t let us sleep," Velarde told reporters from his hospital cot in the provincial capital of Trinidad
where Dr Soruco said he was in surprisingly good health and spirits
“The alligators and snakes watched us all night
a species of the alligator family native to Central and South America
Velarde speculated it was the stench of jet fuel spilling from the wreckage that had kept the predatory reptiles at bay
although there's no scientific proof that's an effective alligator repellent
Velarde said that the five of them survived by eating ground cassava flour that one of the women had brought as a snack
They had nothing to drink — the lagoon water was filled with gasoline
The small plane had set off Thursday from the Bolivian village of Baures
bound for the bigger town of Trinidad farther south
where Patricia Coria Guary had a medical check-up scheduled for her 6-year-old nephew at the paediatric hospital
Such flights are a common form of transportation in this remote Amazonian region carved with rivers
Heavy rains wash away unpaved roads this time of year
But just 27 minutes — almost halfway — into the flight
Velarde said he reported their imminent crash over a portable radio to a colleague
He recalled in interviews with local media that he scanned the vast emerald green canopy below him and aimed for a clearing near a lagoon
“There was no ranch or road along the route,” he said
Instead of skidding across the shore as planned
the plane smashed into the ground and flipped upside down — injuring everyone on board and leaving Coria Guary with an especially deep cut to her forehead — before splashing into the water
“The landing was very rough,” Velarde said
the five of them managed to clamber on top of the fuselage
where they stayed for two terrifying nights surrounded by caimans and anacondas and attacked by swarms of mosquitoes and other insects
They waved shirts and sheets to no avail and screamed each time they heard the thud of propellers or revving of a boat engine
“we started shining our cell phone flashlights and shouting”
They called the authorities and delivered them to an army helicopter some hours later
“We couldn’t have handled it one more night," Velarde said
A woman was killed today in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki when a bomb she was carrying exploded in her hands
The 38-year-old woman apparently was carrying the bomb to place it outside a nearby bank around 5am
Several storefronts and vehicles were damaged by the explosion
The woman was known to authorities after taking part in several past robberies
who said they are investigating her possible ties to extreme leftist groups
The body of a truck driver was recovered three months after his vehicle fell into a sinkhole that suddenly appeared while he was driving on a road near Tokyo
During an earlier search and rescue operation
workers tried to lift the truck but only its flat-bed came out
was believed to have been swept to a location about 30m downstream
after three months of preparation to build a safe underground pathway for workers to reach the targeted area
rescuers wearing helmets and hazmat suits went inside of it and recovered the body
Experts say the Yashio sinkhole was caused by corrosion in sewer pipes
The unsteady ground and a hollow space below it had hampered the rescue
while residents were asked to cut back on water use to minimise sewage water going through the area
The case was a wakeup call about the aging infrastructure in Japan
where most of its main public infrastructure was built during the rapid economic growth of the 1960s and 1970s
more than 10,500 sinkholes were found across Japan
many of them related to sewage facilities in urban areas
offered his prayer for the driver and condolences to his family

A speedboat went airborne and did a complete backward flip while racing at about 322km/h before crashing into an Arizona lake
Two racers inside the boat's covered cabin survived the crash
and "were just a little banged up," according to a social media post on Facebook by the Freedom One Racing team and an account by a race witness
The Sunday crash took place on a 1.2km course at an annual speedboat race
The flying boat still managed to cross the finish line and win the contest by registering a top speed of 200.1 mph (322km/h)
Lee said the twin-hull Skater boat is designed to rise up and hydroplane across the surface of the water
Windy conditions and propeller adjustments called trims likely contributed to the boat taking flight
Lee said it's an inherently dangerous sport
through courses have been shortened from a previous length of 1.6km that produced speeds in excess of 386km/h
Safety precautions include reinforced cockpits with underwater diving gear
Freedom One Racing released a video saying its boat operators got out safely and that the vessel was now back on a trailer
The video showed extensive damage to the boat
Representatives for Freedom One Racing did not immediately respond to email and phone messages

A massive explosion and fire rocked a port Saturday in southern Iran purportedly linked to a shipment of a chemical ingredient used to make missile propellant
killing 25 people and injuring around 800 others
Helicopters and aircraft dumped water from the air on the raging fire through the night into today at the Shahid Rajaei port
The explosion occurred just as Iran and the United States met in Oman for the third round of negotiations over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear programme
No one in Iran outright suggested that the explosion came from an attack
even Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi
on Wednesday acknowledged that “our security services are on high alert given past instances of attempted sabotage and assassination operations designed to provoke a legitimate response”
saying authorities identified only 10 of the dead
state TV reported the fire was under control and will be fully extinguished later today
It also said activities have resumed at the port
showing footage of containers of a commercial ship being unloaded
There were few details on what sparked the blaze just outside of Bandar Abbas
causing other containers to reportedly explode
Private security firm Ambrey says the port received missile fuel chemical in March
It is part of a shipment of ammonium perchlorate from China by two vessels to Iran
first reported in January by the Financial Times
The chemical used to make solid propellant for rockets was going to be used to replenish Iran's missile stocks
which had been depleted by its direct attacks on Israel during the war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip
"The fire was reportedly the result of improper handling of a shipment of solid fuel intended for use in Iranian ballistic missiles," Ambrey said
Ship-tracking data analysed by The Associated Press put one of the vessels believed to be carrying the chemical in the vicinity in March
Iran hasn't acknowledged taking the shipment
The Iranian mission to the United Nations didn't respond to a request for comment yesterday
It's unclear why Iran wouldn't have moved the chemicals from the port
particularly after the Beirut port blast in 2020
caused by the ignition of hundreds of tonnes of highly explosive ammonium nitrate
killed more than 200 people and injured more than 6,000 others
Israel did target Iranian missile sites where Tehran uses industrial mixers to create solid fuel
Social media footage of the explosion yesterday at Shahid Rajaei saw reddish-hued smoke rising from the fire just before the detonation
That suggests a chemical compound being involved in the blast
Tell the gas (truck) to go!" a man in one video shouted just before the blast
the state-run IRNA news agency said that the Customs Administration of Iran blamed a “stockpile of hazardous goods and chemical materials stored in the port area" for the blast
An aerial shot released by Iranian media after the blast showed fires burning at multiple locations in the port
with authorities later warning about air pollution from chemicals such as ammonia
sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide in the air
Schools and offices in Bandar Abbas will be closed today as well
A 2020 cyberattack attributed to Israel targeted the port
It came after Israel said that it thwarted a cyberattack targeting its water infrastructure
Israeli officials didn't respond to requests for comment regarding yesterday's explosion
Social media videos showed black billowing smoke after the blast
Others showed glass blown out of buildings kilometres away from the epicentre of the explosion
State media footage showed the injured crowding into at least one hospital
with ambulances arriving as medics rushed one person by on a stretcher
the provincial disaster management official
earlier told state television that the blast came from containers at Shahid Rajaei port in the city
State television also reported that there had been a building collapse caused by the explosion
The Interior Ministry said that it launched an investigation into the blast
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also offered his condolences for those affected in the blast
Shahid Rajaei port in Hormozgan province is about 1050 kilometres southeast of Iran's capital
the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all oil traded passes
A search and rescue operation is underway for a Masterton man in his 70s missing since Sunday
John Rafferty was last seen at Masterton Railway Station about midday on May 4

The next top cop of the troubled Victoria police force embraces his "outsider" status to curb its leadership malaise and has a stern warning for crooks
Former New Zealand Police commissioner Mike Bush won the race to become Victoria's chief commissioner after months of top-level staffing woes
The 40-year police veteran steps into the role on June 27 with a five-year contract
The Kiwi conceded the job will be no picnic
with Victoria's crime rate hitting an almost decade-high in 2024
everyone knows that," he told reporters today
"These crime issues are actually global
they are quite similar wherever you go but it's not good enough just to turn up after the act
Rising youth crime and high-profile cases of alleged offenders committing crimes while on bail spurred the Victorian government to strengthen laws in March
Bush said he was familiar with the crackdown but bail laws were just one part of the solution to tackling youth crime
along with a "prevention mindset"
He retired from the NZ police force in 2020 after joining in 1978 and spending his final six years in the top job
Whakaari/White Island volcano eruption and Covid-19 pandemic were among the biggest crises Bush confronted during his tenure
Bush also made headlines in 2022 after it emerged he had a past drink-driving conviction when unsuccessfully applying to become head of the UK's Metropolitan Police
Former New Zealand police minister Stuart Nash describedr Bush as hard but fair
He said Bush regularly met with police forces across the Tasman in his previous role and recalled travelling with him to every district across New Zealand once a year to chew the fat with communities
and then we all had biscuits and a cup of tea," Nash told AAP
"Mike is someone who had deep credibility in policing."
The state government has not handed the reins of Victoria Police to an outsider since former NSW Police assistant commissioner Christine Nixon in 2001
The Kiwi was happy to wear the "outsider" tag and is already hatching plans to hit the ground running
"I've got a lot to do to come up to speed," Bush said
"Culture is a consequence of leadership."
establishing relationships with community groups amid rising tensions and increasing police visibility on the beat were among his other top initial priorities
Victoria Police was thrust into leadership turmoil in February
with a no-confidence vote from officers costing chief commissioner Shane Patton his job
Emergency Management Commissioner Rick Nugent became acting chief and expressed an interest in making the move permanent before throwing in the towel in April
Deputy Commissioner Robert Hill will serve in an acting capacity until Bush takes over
Bush intends to speak with Patton before starting and said he wouldn't shy away from pushing back if he disagreed with the government
Premier Jacinta Allan said a recruitment agency was hired and instructed to find a leader capable of addressing the "challenges" plaguing the force
"Mike Bush is the best person for the job," she said
whose union led the no-confidence vote against Patton following a bitter pay dispute
admitted there was a disconnect between members and leaders
The state police union secretary welcomed Mr Bush's appointment and pledge to listen to the mounting workforce concerns
"We have a police force that is currently under-resourced that needs fresh officers," he said
The Commerce Commission has filed criminal charges against Woolworths NZ for alleged inaccurate pricing and misleading specials that may have breached the Fair Trading Act
The commission filed the charges against Woolworths in the Auckland District Court
It indicated in December last year that it would be filing separate criminal charges against Woolworths and two Pak'nSave supermarkets
the commission said there were ongoing issues with pricing in the supermarket sector and the operators may have breached the Fair Trading Act
deputy chair Anne Callinan said operators should know what the expectations were
"Supermarkets have long been on notice about the importance of accurate and clear pricing and specials
and we're not satisfied with the continuing issues we're seeing across the industry
"Pricing accuracy is a consumer right and an expectation of a competitive market
well-resourced businesses that should invest the time and effort to get pricing and promotions right."
She said the charges were filed to remind all supermarkets that they are expected to fix the pricing accuracy issues and implement better processes
In a statement when the charges were announced Woolworths managing director Spencer Sonn said it was important customers could trust prices advertised at their supermarkets
Woolworths said it has cooperated with the Commerce Commission's pricing investigation for some time

Former prime minister Sir John Key says he remains optimistic about Donald Trump's domestic economic policy despite opposing the tariff strategy that has sent global markets into turmoil in recent months
who served as prime minister for eight years
was the keynote speaker at an Auckland business summit earlier today
Sir John told 1News he believed Trump would ultimately take a more moderate approach to tariffs than initially proposed
"I'm not a fan of tariff policies
I don't think they really work," he said
as I think the stock market is telling you at the moment
that actually there will be a more sensible landing place for the tariffs that he's wanting to impose."
Sir John said he "wasn't entirely surprised" at Trump's call to go ahead with the policy
"They're just a negotiating point
I think he simply put on widespread and high rates of tariffs on every country to give himself a leverage point and a negotiating point
"What I think he actually grossly underestimated was the stock market reaction
You can actually make the case that his own strategy hasn't worked
The reason the markets have recovered is because he's taken those tariffs off the most part
'I'm going to negotiate case by case'."
Sir John suggested Trump's economic policies could still generally be positive for the US
but the tariffs could be trickier for the global economy
Asked whether he stood by his October comments that Trump would be good for the economy
he said: "Do I think he's going to reduce regulatory burden in the United States
It depends on where things shake down in terms of tariffs."
Sir John acknowledged that for certain industries
Trump's policies could be "a really negative thing"
particularly if the president's proposed 100% tariff on the film industry were to be implemented
"I can't see how it would be cost-competitive to make a movie in New Zealand with a 100% tariff on it," he said
noting that films such as The Hobbit would not have been made in New Zealand without government subsidies
who now served as a director of US tech company Palo Alto Networks
said he had "always been opposed" to Trump's tariff policies but believes they won't be the "dominant part of his economic solutions"
"I don't think it's perfect from New Zealand's point of view
but I don't think we should panic either
and America will still be a very big market for us to sell things to," he said
"There are growing markets around the world
It's not a great thing from New Zealand's point of view
We've got a very sound economy with lots of options in front of us."
Sir John suggested a belief that the Republican Trump was was better "on balance" for the US economy than Democratic opponent Kamala Harris
he expressed concerns about Trump's tariff approach: "China doesn't pay those tariffs
middle-income consumers or consumers in America do
because when a tariff goes on a good that you bring into a country
He added: "I don't agree with the massive tariffs
and I don't think you'll follow through with all of that
and I certainly don't agree with this view on trade."
Audrey Backeberg disappeared from a small city in south-central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter and catching a bus to Indianapolis
Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her
All that changed last week when she was found alive and safe in another state
thanks to the fresh eyes from a deputy who took over the case in February
Detective Isaac Hanson discovered an out-of-state arrest record that matched Backeberg
which triggered a series of investigative moves that led to finding her alive and safe in another state
Turns out Backeberg chose to leave the town of Reedsburg on her own accord – likely due to an abusive husband
safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long,” he said
Hanson was assigned the case in late February and
he and other officials met with Backeberg’s family to see if they had a connection with that region
They also started digging through Backeberg's sister's Ancestry.com account
obituaries and marriage licenses from that region
they found an address where a woman was living that Hanson said shared a lot of similarities with Backeberg
including date of birth and social security number
Hanson was able to get a deputy from that jurisdiction to go to the address
"I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say
‘Oh nobody answered the door.’ And I thought it was the deputy calling me
I could sense that she obviously had her reasons for leaving.”
Most of the information he learned during that call he declined to share
saying that it was still important to Backeberg that she not be found
“I think it overwhelmed her of course with the emotions that she had
having a deputy show up at her house and then kind of call her out and talk with her about what happened and kind of relive 62 years in 45 minutes,” he said
Hanson described discovering her safe after more than six decades practically unheard of
And while he doesn't know what will happen next in terms of her family reconnecting
he said he was happy that she can reach out if she wants to
so she has my contact number if she ever wants to reach out or needs anything
any phone numbers of family members back here," he said
"Ultimately she kind of holds the cards for that.”
Shane William Pritchard has been charged with crimes he didn’t commit and chased for debts he doesn’t owe
That’s because the Dunedin man is not the only Shane William Pritchard in town
While the duo’s shared name and age has sometimes been a handy loophole for one Shane
for the other it has caused problems for 36 years
It’s been years of fearing every knock on the door
Years of wondering if he’ll be hand-cuffed and taken to jail
to be honest,” says Shane William Pritchard
a scout and a member of the Air Training Corp
remembers getting quite a shock when her friend called one evening
She'd been acting as a referee for a gun licence for Shane
whose friend informed her that the police had a long list of offences against Shane’s name
Not long after that the police turned up to where Shane was working at the local tannery to arrest him
“You're scrambling in your head to think of ways that you can prove it's not you.”
Another Shane William Pritchard had been born in Otago
They were separated by just two weeks and about 50 miles – one growing up in Mosgiel
the other in Milton – but also by the lives they’d been leading
To watch the full video story go to TVNZ+
Shane from Milton had huge problems focusing at school
He was raised in foster care and then boys’ homes
I just wanted to look cool and get in trouble,” he tells Fair Go
Milton Shane was used to run-ins with police
he got pulled over in his car and asked about his driving licence
one’s got a licence and the other hasn’t.’ And I’m like ‘obviously it must be the one with a licence’.”
he went to his bank to draw out an ACC payment and was asked which bank account was his
He says that at that point he was trying to figure out what was going on
“I thought it was just an error.” But he took advantage of the situation and withdrew a large sum of cash
Mosgiel Shane became aware of the withdrawal when a scheduled car payment was declined
and when Milton Shane turned up at the bank to withdraw more money
Identity fraud was considered but Milton Shane was legitimately expecting an ACC payment
so the withdrawal appeared to be a genuine mistake and the police couldn’t take any action
'Anything I could get away with
Mosgiel Shane thought the bank incident would have alerted police to the problem
But his nemesis had cottoned on to the advantages of having a second identity to use
Milton Shane acquired a suite of furniture on hire-purchase
Milton-Shane clocked up more driving offences
Mosgiel Shane thought about changing his name but realised he’d have to provide his previous name in the process
the courts and debt collectors such as Baycorp should be able to distinguish between himself and Milton Shane
The police first addressed the issue in the 1990s after Mosgiel Shane went to the media
He was given a letter to carry with him should he be apprehended
He and his parents felt his situation wasn’t being taken seriously
Mosgiel Shane went to the media a second time in the mid-2000s
the police gave their word that a record in their system would stop the misidentification from happening again
This does appear to have worked as far as police action goes
But while Mosgiel Shane was given the same reassurance by the Ministry of Justice
he continued to receive demands from the courts for unpaid fines
He’d also get stopped and questioned whenever he left the country for work trips or holidays
It took a huge toll on Mosgiel Shane’s mental health
not realising the constant stress it placed on his life
John Pritchard says that at times his son felt his life wasn’t worth living
worrying about what he was going to do to himself and that really ate me up.”
he and his son were in tears as Shane admitted he was at breaking point
He described going for days at a time unable to eat or sleep wondering what might happen next
"Am I going to be in a position where they've got me in handcuffs or I've got debt collectors coming to the door?" ...You're spiralling into this black hole." He started taking anti-anxiety medication which helped
And events regarding Milton Shane seemed to settle
Milton Shane was charged for fishing without a licence in Twizel and failing to comply with fisheries officers
But a court registrar incorrectly entered the birth date of Mosgiel Shane in the system
both Shanes were being chased to pay the $1530 fine
It was Mosgiel Shane who spotted the error and rang the court
He also sent a statement from his manager saying he’d not been fishing in Twizel that day
The reply he got was to say he’d been given the wrong form and that they wouldn’t accept his proof
They just wanted to know how I was going to pay the fine.”
The first Milton Shane knew about this was when Fair Go told him Mosgiel Shane had been chased for the fine
He was told to pay up or face the consequences
feeling he shouldn’t have to pay good money to correct someone else’s mistake
But it cost Mosgiel Shane over $5000 in legal fees
and took months of back and forth between him
“Why should anybody have to pay their own money to right somebody else's wrongs and prove who they are
I’m sick and tired of proving who I am all the time.”
He wanted the Ministry of Justice to take responsibility and reimburse him for his legal costs
saying court staff such as the registrar in this case have immunity if they make mistakes such as the one made here
and if I make a mistake and it's affecting my client
that it's going to cost them money to rectify a mistake that I've made.”
he deserves a million apologies from those guys,” she says
Milton Shane told Fair Go he still gets in trouble
but wants the other Shane to know he doesn’t use his birth date anymore
And he had a message for him: “We’ve got to get it sorted for you
so you can have a good life with you and your family because I’m trying to get my life together with my son and my grandson”
He offers to meet to see if they can sort it out together
but I’m not interested in meeting him,.” says Mosgiel Shane
He says he doesn’t hold any grudges and accepts Milton Shane’s apology
And he believes the only way for that to happen is for the courts and the Ministry of Justice to give him a guarantee that mix-ups won’t occur in the future
Fair Go asked the Ministry of Justice to appear in person to apologise and provide reassurance to Shane of its plans to guard against these mistakes
The Ministry declined our request to be on camera saying any comment on an individual case would compromise the independence of the courts as the Ministry operates separately
But it did send a written apology directly to Mosgiel Shane
It also admitted mistakes can occur in clerical records
but said instructions were clear and the importance of getting things right had been emphasised to staff
Mosgiel Shane isn’t totally convinced that’s the end of it
“All I want is for the Ministry of Justice and the courts to do their job
I'd like to live without this hanging over me all the time
his criminal check has come back showing a clean slate
The government is making it harder to make a claim for pay equity that will cut costs
There have been massive pay equity claims in recent years for nurses and resthome workers
Workplace Minister Brooke van Velden announced the moves to raise the threshold for proving work has been historically undervalued to support a claim
on Tuesday saying changes back in 2020 had created problems
"Claims have been able to progress without strong evidence of undervaluation and there have been very broad claims where it is difficult to tell whether differences in pay are due to sex-based discrimination or other factors."
Claims were concentrated in the public sector
with costs to the Crown of all settlements so far totalling $1.78 billion a year
"The changes I am proposing will significantly reduce costs to the Crown," she said
"The changes will discontinue current pay equity claims."
Van Velden told Midday Report she believes in pay equity but the current thresholds were "a bit too loose"
Asked how she ensure women were not hurt by this
the minister said "I'm a woman and I support women who work"
"I also support removing gender based discriminations from our workforces but what I don't support are muddied laws and unclear laws," she said
"So these changes are better for all women who are working where we can genuinely say hand on heart that what they are finding with their claims is genuine gender based discrimination."
Van Velden told reporters at Parliament any current claims would be stopped and need to restart under the new threshold
to show "genuine" gender discrimination and make sure the comparators were right
She gave a figure of 33 current claims that would be stopped
as the legislation was put through under urgency
"You have librarians who've been comparing themselves to transport engineers
We have admin and clerical staff at Health New Zealand comparing themselves to mechanical engineers."
Social workers had compared themselves to air traffic controllers
"We don't believe we have that setting right."
Any comparison would now be between female employees and male employees at the same employer
"But you cannot go fishing for discrimination across the New Zealand workforce."
All current settled claims would continue but the government was drawing "a line in the sand"
"We're not stopping claims."
The nurse's union has this year had at least 10 pay equity claims in play
The PSA union has said pay equity claims and settlements had resulted in significant improvements in pay and working conditions for many workers
The union said the changes would make it "impossible for people in female-dominated professions to be paid fairly"
"Women across the country will pay the price for this," PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons said
"The government's changes today are a dark day for New Zealand women as the government says it will repeal the pay equity law and extinguish 33 existing claims in a constitutional overreach
"The PSA is exploring all possible avenues to oppose these unconstitutional amendments and stop this attack on women
We will not be deterred in our fight to achieve pay equity for all."
"This is a blatant and shameful attack on women," New Zealand Nurses organisation chief executive Paul Goulter said
"Women in workforces predominantly performed by female employees have been underpaid and undervalued for generations
That is what pay equity claims seek to rectify," he said
"This move by the government will widen the pay gap between men and women."
The union had at least 10 pay current pay claims across Aged Care
These cover many nurses and support workers
The E tū union also called the changes an attack on women and a green light to pay them less for work of equal value
The government was pulling the rug out from under a 13-year-long fight in aged care
"These changes are not about evidence — they are about saving money by keeping women underpaid," national secretary Rachel Mackintosh said in a statement
A number of unions have called a snap rally at Parliament at 1pm today in light of the announcement
the Council of Trade Unions and representatives of other unions say they will be "protesting the government's attack on women and the destruction of progress on pay equity..."

Lady Gaga gave a free concert Saturday night in front of 2 million fans who poured onto Copacabana Beach for the biggest show of her career
(...) Thank you for making history with me,” Lady Gaga told a screaming crowd
kicked off the show at around 22.10pm local time with her 2011 song Bloody Mary
Cries of joy rose from the tightly-packed fans who sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder on the vast stretch of sand
Concert organisers said 2.1 million people attended the show
switching between an array of dresses including one with the colours of the Brazilian flag
Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot
“Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes
a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019
Madonna also turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year
The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after Carnival and New Years’ Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June
“It brings activity to the city during what was previously considered the low season – filling hotels and increasing spending in bars
generating jobs and income for the population,” said Osmar Lima
the city’s secretary of economic development
in a statement released by Rio City Hall’s tourism department last month
Rio’s City Hall said in a recent report that around 1.6 million people were expected to attend Lady Gaga's concert and that the show should inject at least 600 million reais (NZ$178.3 million) into Rio’s economy
Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028
Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday
The city has been alive with Gaga-mania since
as it geared up to welcome the pop star for her first show in the country since 2012
Rio’s metro employees danced to Lady Gaga’s 2008 hit song LoveGame and gave instructions for today in a video
A free exhibition celebrating her career sold out
While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio
the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors
More than 500,000 tourists poured into the city in the days leading up to the show
according to data from the local bus station and Tom Jobim airport
Rio’s City Hall said in a statement yesterday
made a cross-continent trip from Colombia to Brazil to attend the show
“I’ve been a 100% fan of Lady Gaga my whole life,” said Serrano
who was wearing a T-shirt featuring Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes over the years
the mega-star represents “total freedom of expression – being who one wants without shame”
Rio officials have a history of organising huge concerts on Copacabana Beach
Madonna’s show drew an estimated 1.6 million fans last year
while 4 million people flooded onto the beach for a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart in 1994
that was the biggest free rock concert in history
sixteen sound towers were spread along the beach
Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3300 military and 1500 police officers
Among those present were Lady Gaga admirers who remember their disappointment in 2017
when the artist cancelled a performance scheduled in Rio at the last minute due to health issues
“She's the best artist in the world,” the 25-year-old said
I love you” in Portuguese rose from the crowd behind him
whose real name is Ella Yelich O'Connor
which also displayed what appears to be the album cover art — an X-ray of a pelvis
"100% written in blood," the website read
The new album's announcement came a week after she released her latest single What Was That
The song's music video was filmed at a mysterious pop-up event in New York City's Washington Square Park that was initially shut down by police. The event ended up going ahead after all, and fans who stayed got to hear the new song for the first time.

Kim Kardashian thought she was going to be raped and killed when criminals broke into her bedroom in central Paris, tied her up and stole more than US$6 million in jewellery.
More than eight years later, 10 people will go on trial in Paris over the robbery, abduction and kidnapping of the media personality and the concierge of the residence where she was staying during Paris Fashion Week the night of October 2, 2016.
Kardashian’s lawyers said she will testify in person at the trial starting Monday and scheduled to run through May 23.
"Ms Kardashian is reserving her testimony for the court and jury and does not wish to elaborate further at this time," they said.
"She has great respect and admiration for the French justice system and has been treated with great respect by the French authorities.
"She wishes the trial to proceed in an orderly fashion, in accordance with French law and with respect for all parties to the case."
In interviews and on her family’s reality TV show, Kardashian has described being terrified as robbers pointed a gun at her.
In a 2020 appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show, she tearfully recalled thinking: "This is the time I’m going to get raped. I’m like, ‘What is happening? Are we gonna die? Just tell them I have children. I have babies, I have a husband, I have a family.'"
Twelve people were originally expected in the defendants’ box.
One of them has died, and another is seriously ill and can't be tried. According to the investigation, five of the 10 defendants were present at the scene of the robbery.
The French press has dubbed them The Granddad Robbers because the main defendants are elderly and have careers as bank robbers with long criminal records.
Kardashian told investigators she was taken to a bathroom next to her bedroom and placed in the bathtub. Her attackers fled on bicycles or on foot and she managed to free herself by removing the tape from her hands and mouth.
She had also removed the tape from her feet and rushed to her stylist’s room. She called her sister Kourtney to tell her about the theft.
Shortly afterwards, Kardashian told investigators that she had not been injured. She filed a complaint, adding that she wanted to leave France as soon as possible to be reunited with her children.
According to her testimony and that of the concierge, at least one of the suspects had a handgun, with which he threatened the victims.
The gangsters stole many pieces of jewellery, including a ring of great value, estimated to be worth more than US$6 million (NZ$10 million). Only one piece of jewellery — a diamond cross on platinum that was lost during the suspects' escape — has been recovered.
Two of the accused have partially confessed to the crime, as their DNA was found at the crime scene.
The alleged ringleader, 68-year-old Aomar Aït Khedache, is one of two suspected robbers who allegedly entered the apartment. Nicknamed "Old Omar", his genetic profile was found on the tape used to gag Kardashian.
He left the hotel on a bicycle, as did two other robbers, then met his son, who was waiting for him in a parked car at a nearby train station.
The second robber said he tied up the concierge with cables but did not go up to Kardashian’s apartment. Yunice Abbas, 71, said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area, making sure the escape route was clear.
He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian, but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime. Abbas was arrested in January 2017 and spent 21 months in prison before being released under judicial supervision.
In 2021, he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian.
Didier Dubreucq, 69, known as "Blue Eyes", is the second alleged robber suspected of entering the flat.
He denies any involvement, although he was filmed by CCTV cameras and numerous telephone contacts with the other co-defendants show his involvement, according to the investigation.
The other defendants are suspected of providing information about Kardashian’s presence in the apartment.
Others are accused of playing a role in the resale of the jewellery in Antwerp, Belgium.
First-time nominees Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker and Bad Company will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — in a class that also includes pop star Cyndi Lauper, the hip-hop pioneers Outkast, the rock duo the White Stripes and grunge masters Soundgarden.
Salt-N-Pepa, the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum status, and the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon will get the Musical Influence Award. The late record producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins and bassist Carol Kaye will each get the Musical Excellence Award.
The late Cocker, who sang at Woodstock and was best known for his cover of The Beatles’ With a Little Help From My Friends, had the backing of Billy Joel, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Pete Thomas, a member of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, who argued that Cocker is "about as rock and roll as it gets".
Soundgarden — with the late Chris Cornell as singer — get into the Hall on their third nomination. They follow two other grunge acts in the Hall — Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company get in having become radio fixtures with such arena-rock staples as Feel Like Makin’ Love, Can’t Get Enough and Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy.
The Ahmet Ertegun Award — given to nonperforming industry professionals who had a major influence on music — will go to Lenny Waronker, a former head of Warner Bros. Records who signed Prince and R.E.M., and had a part in records from Madonna, Randy Newman, the Doobie Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Simon and Gary Clark Jr.
Some nominees that didn't get in this year included Mariah Carey, Phish, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, the Black Crowes and Oasis.
Checker’s recording of The Twist, and subsequent Let’s Twist Again are considered among the most popular songs in the history of rock 'n' roll. The 83-year-old has expressed frustration that he hadn't been granted entry before, including telling the AP in 2014: "I don’t want to get in there when I’m 85 years old. I’ll tell them to drop dead, so you better do it quick while I’m still smiling."
Lauper rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as Time After Time and Girls Just Want To Have Fun and went on to win a Tony Award for Kinky Boots. OutKast, made up of André 3000 and Big Boi, have six Grammys and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of hip-hop. The White Stripes — made up of Jack White and Meg White — were indie darlings in the early 2000s with such songs as Seven Nation Army.
Artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they’re eligible for induction. The induction ceremony will take place in Los Angeles this fall.
Nominees were voted on by more than 1200 artists, historians and music industry professionals. The selection criteria include "an artist’s impact on other musicians, the scope and longevity of their career and body of work, as well as their innovation and excellence in style and technique".
Last year, Mary J. Blige, Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band and singer-guitarist Peter Frampton were inducted.

A traction cable may have snapped as the cable car ascended Monte Faito

Two Britons are among the four people killed after a mountain car cable snapped and plunged into a ravine in southern Italy
Four tourists and an engineer were on board the cable car when it plunged at “maximum speed” into woodland in Naples after striking a pylon on Thursday afternoon, triggering a major rescue operation in the face of bad weather and fog
Initial reports suggested that a traction cable may have snapped as the cable car ascended Monte Faito, in the town of Castellammare di Stabia
The cable car plunged into a ravine after stopping very close to the station at the top of the peak
The British victims were identified as Margaret Elaine Winn, 58, and Graeme Derek Winn, 65, Italian news agency Ansa reported
was the third foreign victim to be identified
who was the Italian driver of the cable car
A fifth tourist, said to be the brother of the Israeli victim, is in a stable but critical condition at a Naples hospital
a spokesperson for the mayor of Vico Equense
Local prosecutors have opened an investigation into possible manslaughter
which will involve an inspection of the cable stations
said on Thursday: "The traction cable broke
but evidently not the one on the cabin that was entering the station.”
He added there had been regular safety checks on the cable car line
which runs 1.8 miles from the town to the top of the mountain
called the day “truly tragic and painful” in a post on social media and said his thoughts went to those who died
adding that he was grateful to the rescuers
16 passengers were helped out of another cable car that was stuck mid-air near the foot of the mountain
The accident happened just a week after the cable car, which is popular for its views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, reopened for the season. It averages around 110,000 visitors each year.
The emergency services, including Italy's alpine rescue, more than 50 firefighters, police and civil protection personnel, worked into the evening in severe weather conditions, with fog and strong winds making rescue operations difficult.
The company running the service, the EAV public transport firm, said the seasonal cable car had reopened with all the required safety conditions.
EAV president Umberto De Gregorio said: “The reopening had taken place a week ago after three months of tests every day, day and night. This is something inexplicable.”
Mr De Gregorio said technical experts believed there was no connection between the severe weather and the cause of the crash.
“There is an automatic system. When the wind exceeds a certain level, the cable car stops automatically,” he said.
A UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We are dealing with an incident in Italy and are in contact with the local authorities. Our thoughts are with those affected.”

ROME - Four people died and another was injured when a cable-car fell near the southern Italian coastal city of Naples
A cable broke on the link taking tourists from the town of Castellammare di Stabia
while a fifth injured person was rescued and taken to the hospital," the fire department said in a Telegram post
Over 50 firefighters took part in rescue efforts
One cabin carrying 16 passengers was close to Castellammare and they were put down on firm ground
A second cabin was above a precipice on Mount Faito and fog delayed the rescue effort
The cable car had just reopened for the summer season and prosecutors said they have launched an investigation into the accident
"The cable-car reopened 10 days ago with all the required safety conditions," said Umberto de Gregorio
expressed "sincere condolences" to the families of the victims
The cable car has been operating since 1952 and a similar accident in 1960 also left four dead
a cable car crashed in the Italian Alps near Lake Maggiore
a US fighter jet flying a low level on a training flight cut a steel cable and 20 people in a cable car in the Dolomites were killed
Home » #MyPOVSorrento » A Trip to Monte Faito: Along “Il Cammino dell’Angelo”
I had the unforgettable experience of exploring a portion of Monte Faito
This mountain is the highest point on the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Peninsula
and a hang gliding take-off point located here
I left Sorrento with three other Sant’Anna Institute students on the Circumvesuviana train around 8:00 am heading towards Castellammare di Stabia
Upon arriving in the town otherwise known as the Castle of the Sea
we purchased tickets for the cable car (funivia)
The funivia takes you to Monte Faito from Castellammare di Stabia
These tickets can be bought at the train station
as the cable car station is just a number of steps away from the train station ticket booth
The ride up the mountain was eight minutes of stunning 360-degree views
the neighboring peninsular towns to the left and right
and the glimmering gulf of Naples behind and below
There is nothing quite like the feeling of being above cities and towns and below the peak of such a mountain
something you can only feel at this kind of altitude
After arriving at the top at the Funivia del Faito station
we were greeted by cool mountain air (at least five degrees cooler than Sorrento)
and we were welcomed by a local man from the nearby ristorante
He eagerly handed us maps and recommended two hiking trail options
Pointing at Il Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo (St
Michael the Archangel Sanctuary) on the map
We thanked him for his kindness and hospitality
and we started on the trail known as Il Cammino dell’Angelo in the direction of the Santuario
This path is about four kilometers from where we began near the funivia station
and a majority of it was at a slight incline with a few semi-steep hills
There were rocks and stones to step over and onto at certain points
but with many places to rest and enjoy the views along the way
overall it was a low intensity hike fit for beginner-level hikers
One thing to note for any future Monte Faito hikers: Despite the cooler air on the mountain
the warm summer makes for dry dirt that easily leads to a few slips and slides
the hike itself was filled with gorgeous views
Its lush greenery was a delightful discovery in such a coastal location
making this mountain feel like an entirely separate world from the towns below
Its thick canopy cast slivers of shadows and light through the leaves creating the sensation of being seen and hidden all at once
we only saw three other people on the trail
making it a quiet and peaceful site to enjoy the peninsula without the bustle of summertime crowds
The man from the ristorante was right: we loved it
the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel
One of the statues is the Madonna dell’Accoglienza
She stands directly in front of the view and to the left of the church (if you are facing the church)
Surrounding her feet and the short fence around her are the memories of past visitors: beaded cross necklaces and other trinkets of religious honor
She is truly the lady of welcoming in the way she brings you to her side to enjoy the vastness of such a powerful place
The other statues are positioned in a scene together
These bronze sculptures are of Saint Michael
These two are the Patron Saints respectively of Castellammare di Stabia and Sorrento
Saint Micheal (San Michele) can be identified as the center figure by the inscription of “Quis ut Deus,” a Latin phrase written on an extension from his left side at the level of his knees
Andrew as stating that ‘Micheal’ means “Who is like God” in Hebrew
This Latin phrase translates to “Who is like God,” therefore appearing on many images of San Michele
Il Cammino dell’Angelo is the perfect excursion for nature lovers and pilgrims alike
This path is rich with religious history and naturalistic gems
In total the hike lasted roughly 90 minutes
and we were back in Sorrento just after noon
maybe even for the annual Cammino e Perdono del Faito
The 19th Walk and Forgiveness of Faito is happening July 31

Opening Archaeological Museum of Castellammare di Stabia Libero D’OrsiOn the 24th of September
2020 in the historical setting of the Reggia di Quisisiana
the inauguration will take place of the Archaeological Museum of Castellammare di Stabia (Museo Archeologico di Castellammare di Stabia) a new museum specifically for exhibiting the many important items found in the region of Stabia
curated and sponsored by the Parco Archeologico di Pompei (the Archaeological Park of Pompei) in coordination with Electa
is restoring the oldest sites of the Bourbon kings – a symbolic building boasting a history of over seven centuries – to the heritage of Italy
together with precious evidence of daily life
particularly how people lived both in the Roman holiday villas (luxury residences intended for the relaxation of body and mind
from their activities and business affairs) and in the country villas (similar in concept to modern farms)
sited with panoramic views over the Bay of Naples
The Museum will be named after Libero d’Orsi (1888-1977)
initiated the rediscovery of the Villas of Stabia
which had previously been explored in the period of the Bourbons
There is a large number of finds on display
some already kept in the Antiquarium of Stabia
displayed in the city centre by Libero d’Orsi but closed to the public from 1997
The tour through the exhibits of the museum
a scientific project curated by the Parco Archeologico di Pompei
(the Archaeological Park of Pompei) is intended to provide an overall picture of Stabia and of the Ager Stabianus from the earliest times until the volcanic eruption in 79 CE
The first rooms are dedicated to the history of the Reggia di Quisisana and its archaeological explorations
with special attention to the excavations by the Bourbons and by Libero d’Orsi
illustrated by votive material from the sanctuary in the village of Privati (mid-4th – end of the 2nd cent
and by the grave goods from the ancient necropolis in Via Madonna delle Grazie (from the second half of the 7th cent
has been reconstructed chronologically and topographically
In the region of present-day Castellammare di Stabia (Stabiae)
in the Roman period there were several holiday villas with panoramic views
porticoes and lavishly decorated nymphaea or grottoes
The visitor’s journey through this historical period starts with the famous villas built on the plateau of Varanium
Their extraordinary decorations are shown (especially sculptures and frescoes): from Villa San Marco to Villa del Pastore
The decision to begin with Vila San Marco – covering an area of 11,000 square metres
and so one of the largest residential villa in Stabia
is also because it was next to the ancient town centre and in fact it serves to illustrate Pliny’s description of the destruction of Stabia by Silla in 89 BCE
After the section devoted to the plateaus of Varano
there are the villa del Petraro (commune of Santa Maria la Carità)
an important complex from which have come stuccoes that adorned luxurious thermal baths and the villa of Carmiano (commune of Gragnano) the heart of the permanent exhibition
The villa of Carmiano is one of 50 country villas in the ager Stabianus
a region with a number of small properties (country villas covering between 400 and 800 square metres) adapted for the cultivation of vines and olive trees
introduces the visitor to the exhibit of the dibbing- room (triclinium) of Carmiano: food
which provide a snapshot of an important moment in daily life
The frescoed walls of a triclinium (dining-room)
are re-erected midway along the visitor’s route
On these walls are Dionysian scenes that refer to the production of wine
one of the main activities in the agricultural section of the villa
The extraordinary cart made of bronze from Villa Arianna
exhibited for the first time with its harness
is a starting-point for knowing more about the agricultural work and typical products of the region of Stabia: the many examples of tools retrieved from the villas – as well as amphorae and household shrines (lararia) from the countryside – closes the visitor’s route with the theme of making produce that gave the villas in Stabia and around Vesuvius generally
With the inauguration of the Museo Archeologico di Castellamare di Stabia (the Archaeological Museum of Castellamare of Stabia)
both citizens and tourists now have a new space for exhibitions
of vital importance for knowing and appreciating the archaeological heritage of Campania
It is a museum that will combine the cultural contribution and the archaeological circuit of ancient Stabia with the sets of sites that can be visited in Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna
an expansion of the exhibition route is being planned
It will include the possibility of visiting – after several decades – the decoration of the ramp connecting the lower peristyle of the Villa San Marco with its upper peristyle
which will be reconstructed for public viewing
The frescoes need to be restored and reconstructed – a project that will be carried out by Art Bonus
with the hope of support from private individuals
who could benefit from tax relief as provided by the law and take pleasure in having helped to place these significant finds in a museum

The rooms of the refurbished Libero D’Orsi museum of Stabia (Museo Archeologico di Stabia Libero D’Orsi) have doubled in number and the collections of works from the villas in the territory of Stabiae have been enriched
The museum tour has been enhanced by multimedia educational technologies and equipment which improve the physical and cultural accessibility of the works and the contents
The museum store rooms have also been undergone a facelift
in accordance with a new concept designed to ensure they are not just places for conservation but also accessible research areas that are open to the public
the museum has occupied the premises of the Reggia di Quisisana – a building with a history going back seven centuries
The museum contains displays of the many exceptional finds from the territory of Stabiae
together with precious evidence of everyday life
in particular the activities that took place in the Roman villas devoted to the pursuit of otium
or “cultivated leisure” (luxurious residences designed for the relaxation of the body and the spirit from the stress of daily activities and business) and in rural villas (similar in concept to modern farms)
situated in panoramic settings with “views” of the Bay of Naples
The tour has been expanded with the introduction of newly restored finds while the existing itinerary has been reassessed in the light of the introduction of new technologies
For the very first time the displays bring together the decorative elements from the maritime villas found on the Varano Hill during the Bourbon excavations and the decorations discovered by Libero D’Orsi
the new layout finally reunites the finds from Stabiae kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) with those discovered by D’Orsi
This has proved possible thanks to the agreement signed with MANN to enhance the archaeological heritage of Stabiae which enables the museum to obtain – thanks to a three-year loan – many of the finds from Stabiae on a rotating basis
to see decorative elements organised according to the contexts of provenance
The tour tells the story of an extraordinary archaeological site – the ancient city of Stabiae – which was twice destroyed and twice came back to life
Conquered and razed to the ground during the Social Wars by the troops of the Roman general Sulla
as a punishment for siding with the Italic rebels
it resumed life as a pagus (subdivision of land) of Nuceria and became the site of important
prestigious maritime villas adorned with wonderful
The city would subsequently be destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 like Pompeii and Herculaneum but
Stabiae was the harbour (statio) of the fleet of Misenum and continued to perform this role in the period after the eruption
as is shown by the finds discovered beneath the cathedral of Castellammare di Stabia
a multimedia model interacts with the exhibits on display
recounting the lengthy period of transformations that affected the territory – comprising the area of Herculaneum
Pompeii until Surrentum on the side of Neapolis and Nuceria and the Lattari Mountains on the side of Salernum – and the two different moments of the discovery of the ancient city of Stabiae: the first during the Bourbon era (the years when Pompeii and Herculaneum were discovered)
the second by headmaster and amateur archaeologist Libero D’Orsi during the 1950s
is retraced by means of a multimedia diary with the voice
It is a multimedia book that visitors can leaf through virtually to find out all the details that have contributed to the history and fame of the excavations
An important contribution to the creation of this installation was made by the excavation committee of Stabia which keeps the precious archive of documents left by Libero D’Orsi
The new concept of the museum is geared heavily towards highlighting the ties that the ancient city of Stabiae succeeded in creating with the resources of its surrounding territory (ager)
corresponding today to the municipalities (comuni) of S
was marked by a series of interesting residential and productive complexes that reflected the characteristics of each estate
The museum intends to enhance and recount the distinctive features of these contexts
A large section is devoted to the finds from these complexes
with their elaborate architecture and decoration
triclinia and cubicula (bedrooms) as well as elegant baths
The scientific project was curated by the Director General Gabriel Zuchtriegel and Maria Rispoli
Director of the Museo Archeologico di Stabia Libero D’Orsi
The contents were created with the contribution of scholars of the territory
students of the SSM – Scuola Superiore Meridionale – and researchers from the Università della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli
The new section is completely devoted to the landscape which is viewed as a crucial factor in establishing the relationship between nature and the built environment
The displays evoke the large rooms that overlooked Vesuvius and the bay of Stabiae which still represent spectacular backdrops reaching out to the sea
In the museum the landscape that could be enjoyed in AD 79 has been faithfully reconstructed at the back of the room
stripping it of all contemporary buildings
and presenting it in a dynamic projection that changes over the 24 hours of the fateful day
The projection becomes the perspective backdrop to the furnishings discovered in the peristyles and gardens of the villas of Varano
These areas were overlooked by the rooms devoted to sleep and daytime rest
conviviality and hospitality which always focused on the panorama: Ischia and Misenum (Capo Miseno)
Capri and the Sorrentine peninsula but also the high green valleys of which the author Symmachus praises the quality and health-giving qualities of the milk produced by the herds of cattle that grazed there
The walls are decorated with numerous figures of offerers
the female and male figures captured in thoughtful
The faces are depicted in all their intimacy
The words of Cicero stand out on the walls of the rooms
He wrote to his friend Marcus Marius: “For I doubt not that in that study of yours
from which you have opened a window into the Stabian waters of the bay […]”
The discovery of a perfectly preserved chariot with its horses along the ramps of Villa Arianna provides evidence of an internal road network between the plateau of Varano and the sea but it is also a sign of a massacre
caused by the Plinian eruption which destroyed and buried the ancient city
Stabiae represented the only access to Nuceria
the one running inland and the one skirting the sea
The story of the rebirth of the city is told through an interactive multimedia installation and the finds received on loan from the Museo Diocesano Sorrentino Stabiese
the museum that keeps and displays the finds unearthed beneath the cathedral of Castellammare di Stabia
which date to the 2nd and the 6th centuries AD

With the weather in Sorrento being so nice
this past week I went on a few outdoor adventures that are not to be missed
I had an amazing week outdoors on the Sorrento coast
On Thursday morning I got up very early and took the train from Sorrento to Castellammare di Stabia
then I bought a ticket to take the Funivia del Monte Faito cable car to the top of the mountain
I stood in awe inside the cable car as it went higher up the mountain
watching as the towns below me became smaller
Though on sea level it was the beginning of a warm and clear day
at the top of the mountain the high altitude left a slight chill in the air as the peak of the mountain reached the clouds
you arrive in a small town area with restaurants where you can decide which hiking path you would like to go on
Walking along the paths you can hear the birds chirping and see small lizards scurrying around
It felt so serene and peaceful as I took in the panoramic view
One of the paths I took brought me to an outlook where I could see the Sorrento Peninsula and Capri with the Faraglioni rocks to my left
So I just sat on the rocks of the outlook for a while
in awe of how beautiful this place is and feeling incredibly grateful to able to experience it
there are so many places to stop to enjoy the amazing views
Going to Monte Faito is a must for nature lovers and hikers
especially if you want some of the best views on the coast
At the end of the day I took the cable car back down to Castellammare di Stabia
I got a sandwich and sat on the beach taking in the view of Vesuvius as I watched the sunset over the ocean
On Friday morning I went with a few of my friends to Capri for the day
After taking the 20-minute ferry from the Sorrento port
we arrived in Capri ready to explore the island
we took the funicular up to the town to easily get into the main part of Capri
there are so many small winding streets with lots of boutiques
After walking around for a little bit we went to Anacapri where we took a chair lift to Monte Solaro
provides an amazing view of the Faraglioni rocks from the top
as well as the clear blue ocean and the Isle of Ischia in the distance
we took a private boat tour around the island to enjoy Capri from the sea
we had the opportunity to go into the Blue Grotto
After getting onto a small boat and paying at the entrance of the grotto
we waited in a line of boats to enter the small cave
Lying down on your back to enter the grotto
the person manning the boat pulls the boat into the cave with a rope fixed to the top of the rocks
Inside the Blue Grotto was the most vibrant water I have ever seen
glowing blue and I definitely think everyone should look to experience it during a trip to Capri
we headed back to Sorrento and got gelato to finish off such a wonderful day
I had a field trip for my drawing class to the Ieranto Bay
After taking a bus to Massa Lubrense we began the 40-minute hike down to the bay
The path descends down the side of the mountain revealing the magnificent view of Capri and the Faraglioni Rocks in between the landmarks of Punta Campanella and Punta Penna
and olive trees and the scent of blooming flowers fills the air
It was here in this Marine Protected Area that I saw some of the most crystal clear waters of the coast
Though this can be a slightly difficult hike to complete
the view from the bay makes it all worth the walk
Though the chilly water brought many jellyfish into the area
we were still able to go kayaking and snorkeling in addition to relaxing on the small beach area
This is definitely a hidden gem of the coast that has some of the most beautiful views I have ever seen
In celebration of two of my friends’ birthdays
I finished out the weekend by renting two boats with my friends that stopped in Positano for a few hours
allowing us to view the Ieranto Bay we had gone to the day before from the sea
We spent the day relaxing on the boat and swimming in the beautiful waters around the coast and had such a fun day together
I had four incredible days of beautiful views
The Sorrento coast is such an amazing place to explore because of its natural beauty that allows for unique experiences and lifelong memories
Una delle cose che apprezzo della vita a Sorrento è la possibilità di partecipare ad eventi e attività locali durante il mio soggiorno qui
Walking down the pathway to Sorrento’s Marina Grande
the vibrant green and yellow cupola of the Chiesa di Sant’Anna stands out among the rooftops
My name is Gianna and I am a college student from the United States currently studying at the Sant’Anna Institute in Sorrento this winter and

The true history of the Agerola-Quisisana aqueduct near Pompeii and Sorrento may soon be revealed according to local historian Angelo Acampora and two enthusiasts from ArcheoClub d’Italia
As reported in Italian news agency AGI (Agenzia Giornalistica Italiana)
the Bourbon-era aqueduct supplying the town of Castellamare di Stabia in the Bay of Naples has been claimed over the 2021 new year holiday to be of ancient Roman origin
The aqueduct runs from a source in Agerola 1000 metres above sea level through the Franche di Pimonte to Mt
Coppola and the Quisisana woods to King Carlo III‘s Palace called the Reggia of Quisisana
and down to the port of Castellammare di Stabia
Unfortunately I have not yet been able to independently verify the evidence for the new date
“There’s no life without water,” said Massimo Santaniello, President of the Stabiae section of ArchaeoClub d’Italia. “An aqueduct is not always a monument with an imposing architectural aspect, but the work of hydraulic engineering and the public use render it important.”[1]
Castellamare is a castle-town south of Pompeii in the bay of Naples
In ancient times it was known as Stabiae and it was a peripheral point to the region’s ancient water supply
Serino Aqueduct (LINK)
or the Aqua Augusta Campaniæ which had branches each side of Mt
Vesuvius supplying Pompeii to the south and finally filling vast tanks to supply Baiae and the Piscina Mirabilis (Porto Miseno) to the north of the bay where the Roman fleet was based
In more modern times the port of Castellammare was developed by the House of Bourbon into the largest shipyard in Italy with 1,800 workers and the same Bourbons built the Agerola-Pimonte-Quisiana aqueduct to service that shipyard
Clearly Castellammare residents are extremely enthusiastic about their potential new Roman Aqueduct and over the New Year weekend, I had the opportunity to interview some very passionate historians with vastly different theories about why the Castellammare aqueduct might be ancient. However when we spoke to SAIC Professor Pappalardo, he immediately made the startling admission: “I’ve never seen it. I can’t judge.”[2]
We can now reveal the following: the principle evidence comes from Massimo Santaniello the president of ArchaeoClub Italia Stabiae branch and German tour-guide Wolf Murmann
Santaniello and Murmann have recently made detailed measurements of the Aqueduct channel known as the specus and photographed its building materials although these photographs have not yet been made available to us
Santaniello and Murmann believe they have photographs of Roman masonry in the aqueduct
and particularly of waterproof cocciopesto with shards or ‘cocci’ of terracotta*
We would particularly like to see those photographs
At the same time, local historian Angelo Acampora has proposed an interesting theory. Acampora noticed whilst translating a work by Giovanni Boccaccio, contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, that Boccaccio seems to describe an aqueduct running 45,000 paces (equivalent to 66km) from the ‘castle of Sarno’ to Miseno[3]
the closest castle to the river Sarno is 61km from Capo Miseno taking the most direct route through central Naples
It is not clear that we can rule out the possibility that Giovanni Boccaccio is writing about the Serino Aqueduct*
Vesuvius’ eruption in 79AD but was buried by the subsequent eruption in 472
by a process of elimination it is likely to refer to the Castellammare aqueduct
and could suggest it has older origins than the Bourbon era
Santaniello and Murmann have followed and investigated a stretch of 3km of the aqueduct channel
known as the ‘specus’ between Quisisana forest and Pimonte
For long stretches the conduit is concealed in the rock
They report having seen cocciopesto lining on the inside of the specus
and brick arches constructed with straw-yellow bricks like no-other brick used nearby

The new unit will be delivered in 2022 and falls within the naval program of the maritime capability of Defence, approved by the Italian Government and Parliament and started in May 2015 (“Naval Act”).
Godmother of the ceremony was Mrs. Laura Mattarella, daughter of the Italian President.
The ceremony was also attended, among others, by the Italian Minister of Economic Development, of Labour and Social Policies and Deputy Prime Minister of Italy Luigi Di Maio and the Italian Minister of Defence Elisabetta Trenta, by the Governor of Campania Vincenzo De Luca, by the Chief of Defence Gen. Enzo Vecciarelli and the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy Adm. Valter Girardelli.
The unit “Trieste” will be classified by RINA Services pursuant to international conventions for the prevention of pollution regarding traditional aspects – like those addressed by the MARPOL Convention, as well as those not yet mandatory, like the ones covered by the Hong Kong Convention introducing the “Green Passport” concept.
Vessel’s characteristics: LHD – Landing Helicopter Dock
The unit will be approx. 214 meters long with a maximum speed of 25 knots. It will be equipped with a COmbined Diesel eLectric Or Gas (CODLOG) propulsion system and an additional electric propulsion system to be used for low speed sailing, in line with the Italian Navy’s environmental policy (“Green Fleet”).
The Unit has also been conceived to carry out command and control functions in case of emergencies at sea, evacuation of nationals and humanitarian assistance operations.
With over 1,000 sleeping accommodations, the new LHD will feature a 230-metre long helicopter flight deck, allowing the operation of a battalion consisting of 600 personnel, and a dock-garage for 1,200 linear metres of wheeled and tracked vehicles, both civilian and military.
The floodable dock – 50 metres long and 15 metres wide – will enable the ship to deploy the most technically advanced amphibious equipment and vehicles of EU and NATO Navies.
The different areas of cargo securing are accessible through cranes, stern and side ramps, and cargo handling will be managed by internal ramps and elevators.
A fully equipped hospital will also be available onboard, complete with operating rooms, radiology and analysis rooms, a dentist’s office, and patient rooms capable of hosting 27 seriously injured patients (further admissions are possible through duly equipped container modules).

Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples, is said to be beset with social and moral decay
is said to be beset with social and moral decay
A priest has performed an exorcism from a helicopter to banish evil from an Italian seaside town said to be beset with social and moral decay.
Worshippers organised the airborne battle against evil after several churches were robbed and defiled in Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples.
The aerial benediction was carried out to bless and cleanse the town and the surrounding area. Locals say a series of incidents, including the desecration of graves, crosses placed upside down, thefts from churches and Madonnas thrown off cliffs, suggest the presence of devil worshippers.
“If Satan exists, he has taken control of Castellammare di Stabia. There was nothing left but to try the exorcist,” said a statement from the prayer group that called in the unnamed priest.
It is not yet clear whether the exorcism, which took place on 9 July, has had the desired effect.
But locals are hoping and praying that the benediction will help turn around the economic fortunes of the town’s 65,000 inhabitants, who have been hit by surging unemployment and closing businesses.
However, some observers noted that the problems with pollution and criminality in an area once known for its famous thermal springs are more likely to stem from organised crime than the occult.

Luigi Bobbio, the mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples
is adamant that his proposal does not constitute a full ban on miniskirts
He points out that miniskirts will be allowed – as long as they cover women's underwear
The proposal is one of many designed to help "restore urban decorum and facilitate better civil coexistence"
Others include a ban on swearing and a prohibition on playing football in public parks
Bobbio claims the miniskirt decree is intended only to put an end to excessive flesh being displayed away from local beaches
it does mean the police will be checking women's hemlines to see if they can spot knickers
Although the town council is due to vote on the measures at about 6pm UK time
the mayor has a good majority and the moves look set to pass
who have said the measures will make Castellammare di Stabia like Iran
The seaside town is not the first place to take a dim view of high hems
In September 2008, Uganda's ethics and integrity minister called for a ban on miniskirts
claiming they were dangerous as they could prise drivers' eyes from the road
James Nsaba Buturo told journalists: "What's wrong with a miniskirt
You can cause an accident because some of our people are weak mentally."
Six years ago, women in the Kenyan city of Mombasa were given leaflets instructing them to dress modestly and shun miniskirts
The leaflets prompted the government to deny rumours that it was pressing for a ban
Shortlived bans have also been introduced in parts of Russia and Chile
The prohibition at a teachers' college in the Siberian city of Kemerovo was challenged by lawyers who said the ban was "an infringement of equality and human rights … guaranteed by the Russian constitution"
The Chilean women's minister, Carolina Schmidt, was quick to step in after a regional governor banned public employees from wearing miniskirts and strapless tops
"It's absolute nonsense that someone should tell other people how to dress," said Schmidt
Bans have also been imposed in the UK. In July this year, Southampton city council told its female employees that they should not wear miniskirts and should ensure that their attire was "appropriate" for the work they did
And girls at two schools in Yorkshire and Suffolk have been banned from wearing skirts altogether and told to wear trousers
as part of a battle to raise what he describes as the level of public decorum
who was elected on Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom party ticket
won a vote to ban clothing considered "very short" from the town of Castellammare di Stabia
Police will get the power to hand out €300 (£265) fines to offenders
Explaining what he meant by "very short"
Bobbio said officers would target women wearing miniskirts that did not fully cover their underwear
"The display of too much cleavage will also earn a fine," added a spokesman
Bobbio said he had faith in officers to make snap decisions
"They won't need to carry out checks up close," he told Corriere del Mezzogiorno
"One glance will be enough to judge."
which were approved by the town council yesterday
drew outrage from local centre-left politicians
who mounted a sit-in outside the town hall
"The Bobbio administration is male chauvinist," the organisers of the protest said in a statement
but not the decorum that is measured by a tape measure held against women's clothing."
"By equating women's clothing with urban decorum
this measure implies women are no more than benches or hedges," said councillor Angela Cortese
Cortese said she was equally angered by a local priest
who praised the move and claimed it could cut down on sexual harassment
"This turns the clock back years for women and undermines all our victories," she said
The Italian consumer group Aduc added: "Is Castellammare di Stabia in the province of Naples
The vice-president of the provincial commission for equal opportunities
where at least female guards check the clothing of female inmates."
The miniskirt ban is one of 41 new decorum measures introduced by Bobbio
climbing trees and walking a dog with a lead longer than two metres will also be targeted
Bobbio said people would not be allowed to wander off the beach in their swimming costume
The city wakes up under a gray sky after the cable car accident
Good Friday in Castellammare di Stabia is a day of deep sorrow and reflection
woke up to a gray sky that reflects the climate of shock and sadness that has struck the community
citizens find themselves facing a reality that is difficult to accept

Monsignor Alfano leads a touching celebration in memory of the cable car victims
The Easter Vigil celebrated last night in Castellammare di Stabia was a moment of deep reflection for the local community

highlighting the crucial role of the community in supporting its members in times of crisis
many were family members and friends of Carmine Parlato
the cabin operator who tragically died in the accident
which united in a collective embrace of grief and solidarity
“When grief becomes tragedy and touches us closely
