Be organized and make the most of your short amount of time with the program The MPA has many facets that students can engage with Think about what you would like to take away from the program and what aspects you want to engage with most fully I was a course assistant for the intensive summer courses in statistics I advised students to not compare themselves to one another Use the wonderful opportunity of being surrounded by so many other bright people to learn from others with different abilities and backgrounds If you want to work on specific skills or improve parts of your learning use the resources available and you will be surprised by how much knowledge you will have gained by the end of it The diversity of interests in the cohort was an unexpected and welcome surprise that elevated my experience Our cohort brought together a myriad of expertise and interests under the umbrella of policy what I cherished most was learning things I would have never expected from conversations with other students Hai dimenticato la password? Alex Zulle wore Pink... pic.twitter.com/7eYKlfbgaIOctober 8, 2020 The peloton have reached the end of the neutralized zone and the attacks have started Nothing has managed to get away just yet though Finally we have some order after a flurry of early attacks and four riders have gone clear We'll have the names and information in just one minute Not exactly the break we expected but it looks like they're clear for the day at this point Just some scenes at the finish and there's bit of wind around That could be a factor if we have a bunch sprint.  The four leaders have extended their advantage to 5'50 already with 168km to go while QuickStep are on the front of the peloton and tapping out the pace for Almeida.  Merida Reacto Team-E reviewhttps://t.co/SwbGDBuPj7 pic.twitter.com/2eZ8V9AYOqOctober 8, 2020 Astana have a strong presence at the front of the bunch too at the moment as we see a few riders drop back to the  team cars for a fresh round of bottles as the break move their advantage out to 6'48 with 166km to go They could be into double figures in the next few kilometers.  What a nice gesture from the @giroditalia to wish our boys that where supposed to be here all the best next to our pink @JooAlmeida98 Forza @FabioJakobsen Forza @EvenepoelRemco pic.twitter.com/SdSqZ9JNWvOctober 7, 2020 Just over seven minutes now for our four leaders with 161km to go Mattia Bais is riding his maiden Grand Tour here in the Giro and this is the first time the 23-year-old has been on the attack in the race punchy climbs pretty well and could be the rider to watch if this break survives to the finish.  Marco Frapporti is the most experienced rider in the break he's been a constant presence in attacks and breaks over the years This is his eighth Giro and he's yet to win a stage but he did win a stage into Glastonbury at the Tour of Britain back in 2010 James Whelan is making his Grand Tour debut in the Giro and EF will be surfing on the wave of some excellent confidence after they won stage 2 in the race Whelan put in a number of impressive rides when we were all in lockdown and racing was online but he's helping the break extend their advantage IRL right now Marco Frapporti has been forced to stop and have a wheel change but he should be able to make it back to the rest of the break without too much effort.  Marco Frapporti has made it back to the leaders on a short descent as we see the lead settle around 7'45 Will they manage to push on a bit more now that they're back up to four riders?  QuickStep are just holding the break at under 8 minutes and they have just one rider on the front right now,  Iljo Keisse He's doing all the work and it's clear that the Belgian team want more sprinters' teams to contribute to the chase This is a day for Sunweb or Bora but nothing from either team with 146km to go The way the peloton are riding, it's almost like  GC day, with Astana and Bahrain McLaren riding in blocks just behind Iljo Keisse 8'17 now for our quartet as the autumnal sun beams down on the main field.  We're approaching nine minutes for the break but there's still no real threat in terms of the stage win with 140km still to race.  Almeida is safely riding in the middle of the QuickStep train and the mood in the bunch is pretty relaxed at the moment They have the break under control and there's little pressure out on the road That might change later on when a few more teams up the pace and start to chase In other news Tour of Flanders favourite Julian Alaphilippe has asked everyone not to call him a favourite for the Tour of Flanders. Here's the  yarn While we also have Gent-Wevelgem coming up this weekend and Peter Cossins has sent us his race preview ahead of the cobbled classic.  Whelan has a mechanical and need to drop back just before we reach an intermediate sprint That's really poor luck but he should make it back after a short chase Whelan makes it back just after the sprint as we see three or four more jerseys from QuickStep move up at the front of the peloton All of a sudden there's a change at the front as we see Bora lead Sagan into the action But Demare takes four points and then Sagan's leadout man finishes ahead of the former world champion It looks like there was a fall back in the bunch with two Jumbo riders and Zakarin from CCC The Russian is back on his bike and chasing but it looks like the men in yellow and black need some mechanical assistance After the sprint Bora sit up and Sagan looks suitably unimpressed with Bodnar and the former world champion fluffing their lines QuickStep move back to the head of the peloton and normality is resumed once more.  104km to go and the break still just under nine minutes clear Teams will need to contribute to the chase once we dip inside the final 80-90km of racing 9'20 now for the leaders so things are starting to get interesting but the peloton still hold all the cards at this point The maglia rosa is back in the bunch and scoffing his lunch as we see Bora settle into second place in the bunch Suffered & hung on the past 3 days. I hoped & believed things would improve, but after increasing pain, decreasing function and this mornings x-rays it became clear that this Giro was done for me. Disappointed and frustrated to be leaving my team mates, wishing them the best https://t.co/ZXXRQAv8YqOctober 8, 2020 97km remaining and Bora move up to the front of the peloton and begin to lead the chase As a result the pace instantly increases.  The efforts from Bora have reduced the lead to 8'01 so there's been an instant reaction from the main field It's Patrick Gamper doing most of the work for the Bora bunch and he's shaved another 15 seconds off the break's advantage 🇮🇹 #Giro After a minor crash earlier in the stage both Tony Martin and Christoph Pfingsten are back in the peloton.October 8, 2020 84km to go and the gap is at 6'51 as the break realise that it's only a matter of time before the race is all back together 79km to go and the four leaders lose another chunk of time with the gap now under four minutes even though they're still working well together and sharing the workload so it's clear that the chase is on for now Louis Meintjes is forced to stop and get a new wheel He'll have a tough chase on his hands as the pace is up as we approach the final 70km of the race The lead for the break is now down to 4'51 We're on a slight climb right now as the bunch race through the feedzone That will give the break - potentially - the chance to arrest the  decline in their lead It's at 4'12 with 69km to go as we see a few more riders taking on fuel The  road narrows and that means the  pace is up and the peloton line out They're about to come back but that's a bit of a warning sign for what might lay ahead 61km to go and the gap to the break is at 3'02 as Bora lead the peloton back into a headwind section Sagan is currently coming through the team cars as the pace drops slightly in the peloton and the gap holds at 2'37 Bora are leading on this unclassified climb and they're just tapping out a pace that strings out the bunch but keeps the break where they are They'll hold this position for another 20km or so 55km to go with another intermediate sprint coming up Marco Frapporti has the best sprint and takes the intermediate sprint It's more of a cross-headwind right now as we see the gap drop to 2'11 with 50km to go.  Dumoulin and Roglic to share leadership at Vuelta a España'If I am better he'll ride for me, if he's better it's the same scenario as the Tour' says Dumoulinhttps://t.co/wdXFoJMaox pic.twitter.com/zdxx4ZYurZOctober 8, 2020 Just a short reminder of the big news today, and that Egan Bernal will not race again this season. That leaves Froome and Carapaz for the Vuelta a Espana. Our exclusive is right here The peloton are brought onto a narrow bridge and that causes the riders at the back to stop and then chase back on Majka was caught out and was left on his own so he's having to use his legs to work his way back towards the front.  The easing in pace at the front of the peloton has afforded the peloton a few more seconds and the gap is back out to 2'44 with 42km to go James Whelan is wishing his mother a happy birthday as the motorbike TV crew come up close to him There won't be a win today but he's done his team - and mum - proud with his ride Still just two Bora riders on the front of the bunch but a number of teams will be thinking about the finish now But that climb near the finish could punish some of the pure sprinters Whelan is now in discussions with Frapporti with the Italian clearly not happy with the EF rider's commitment.  Almeida has his jersey unzipped and he's got a problem with his radio Almeida pulled over to fix his radio/jersey problem and as he stopped on the right Brandon McNulty rode into the back of him Gaviria was held up too and that looked bad All of the riders are back on their bikes but that was a huge scare for the young race leader The bunch eased up to allow Almeida the chance to make it back into the peloton and he's back near the front with 34km to go The four-man break have 2'11 on the main field Frapporti decides that he doesn't want company and he's gone alone with 31km to go and he's quickly established a gap The rest of the break haven't sat up and they're about to catch Frapporti 30km to go and the bunch are at just 1'06 at this point and it's only a matter of time before the break are reeled in Frapporti goes again but the rest of the break latch on and now Whelan has a dig and Frapporti responds.  And Whelan keeps the power on and now he's clear It's his mother's birthday today so he's racing for her But maybe he's racing for all the mums because lets face it only a mother could love their kid in that jersey.  Whelan still clear on this climb and he's got 20 seconds on the chasers and 1'22 on the peloton He might take all the points in the KOM competition with 9 available for the first rider to the summit 2km to go for Whelan on this climb and 27.5km to go in the stage A few riders are being dropped on this third cat climb as we see Zan caught by the bunch A few GC teams have moved up as we see Viviani being dropped.  Whelan is barely in the saddle as he stands up and gains more time on the remnants of the break and then holds the bunch at 1'06 This is a great ride from the EF Pro Cycling rider Whelan has 35 seconds with 25km to go as De Gendt is marked on the descent and then caught.  It looked as though Viviani was the only major sprinter dropped on the climb Whelan is plugging away and giving it everything but with 20km to go he only has 12 seconds on the peloton The  headwind is a real issue here and it's going to be a problem in the uphill sprint too  Whelan is about to be caught with just under 19km to go as Bora and Groupma sit on the front To be fair to Whelan he's still out there with 17.5km to go and he's holding onto that 7 second lead This is a blistering pace from the EF rider on this slightly downhill section as he tucks into a TT position Four seconds and Whelan isn't looking back but he can probably hear the main field closing on him as the Australian keeps putting the pressure on and now the catch is made with 13.7km to go with Bora leading the line as they know that the finish is pretty technical before the final uphill sprint to the line Just a shade over 10km to go and Bora continue to set the pace for Sagan who hasn't won a race since a stage in last year's Tour de France Under 10km to go and the bunch are waiting before coming off this main road and heading onto more narrow streets.  Swift is at the back of the Ineos train and they'll be looking to set up the British national champion as we climb Sunweb move up too as they look to protect Kelderman and lead Matthews There's a real fight for position at the front now as Astana come through to protect Fuglsang.  Almost a touch of wheels for Almeida but he corrects his line and remains in contention.  Just over 5km to go and the road is about to narrow Demare has FDJ coming through too as the road climbs once more Ganna hits the front for Swift now as Jumbo make their presence felt Ganna is still leading the bunch as we head to a critical corner Ineos could be setting this up for Narvaez Sagan is near the front as Bora hit the front with 2.1.km to go All the GC climbers make it over this little steep climb as Fabbro continues to set the pace Bora still on the front with 1km to go and Nibali has attacked He's caught  but we're about to see the sprint Demare is fourth wheel and then  opens his sprint with a long way to go The Frenchman powers clear and no one can catch him.  Arnaud Demare wins stage 6 of the Giro d'Italia It looks like it was Matthews who finished in a distant second place but that's Demare's second stage win of this year's Giro d'Italia The leadout wasn't that well organised but that glosses over the fact that riders were sprinting by him as the line approached with Demare set to take the lead in that competition.  Those small dots in the background are the riders finishing behind Demare You can find our report, stunning world record – and a maiden European title – to his rapidly growing honours list with a breath-taking victory in the Roma 2022 100m freestyle final who claimed two breakthrough World titles in June set a championship record in the 100m free heats and followed that with a European record in the semi-finals The world record 46.91 had stood since 2009 when it was set by Brazilian Cesar Cielo in the same Foro Italico venue at the Fina World Championships Although surprisingly trailing to Frenchman Maxime Grousset at the halfway stage Popovici surged ahead in the second 50 and by finishing in 46.86 he knocked 0.05 secs off the previous landmark time 200m butterfly world record holder Kristof Milak produced a highly impressive 47.47 second swim for silver with Italian Alessandro Miressi claiming bronze wasn’t a priority but the atmosphere helped me,” Popovici told LEN TV “It is an honour and helpful thing (to have the attention of the fans) and yeah it’s great to have beaten it (the world record) here.” World champion Benedetta Pilato was the quickest-qualifier and unsurprisingly the overwhelming pre-race favourite for gold The 17-year-old delivered a trademark stunning first 50m but while the chasing pack did narrow the gap in the closing stages the Italian clung on to claim her first 100m European title Team-mate Lisa Angiolini was second “I’m this is amazing and we have gold and silver so we are very happy,” said Pilato but the atmosphere was very beautiful tonight.” Gregorio Paltrinieri dominated this event at the 2014 and 2016 European Championships before finishing as the runner up in both the 2018 and 2020 editions Roared on by a capacity crowd of over 7,000 in the venue though he had the perfect fuel to return to the top of the podium in the event – and he would achieve that dream.  He powered ahead in the early stages and despite pressure from Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Romanchuk and Lukas Maertens of Germany during the final he was ultimately a comfortable winner in seven minutes 40.86 seconds – a new championship record Maertens would take second with Lorenzo Galossi’s late charge securing bronze for the Italian so crazy and amazing to win here where it feels like home,” Paltrinieri told LEN TV Sarah Sjöström won the 50m butterfly title at the 2012 2016 and 2018 editions of the European Champions but was forced to miss Budapest 2020 after breaking her elbow The 28-year-old Olympic gold medallist reclaimed her European crown though with a dominant performance Matie Wattel of France (25.33) and Dutch swimmer Maaike de Waard took silver and bronze respectively “It’s amazing to be on the top of the podium again in the 50m butterfly,” Sjöström told LEN TV “I’m also happy to do my fastest time in the final in front of this crowd.” Frenchman Yohann Ndoye Brouard was forced to swim a solo time-trial at the end of day two after a starting ledge malfunction in the semi-finals but despite that setback he was the second quickest qualifier for the 200m backstroke final There he produced a powerful performance and secured his maiden major international gold medal with victory in a personal best of 1:55.62 seconds.  Benedek Kovacs of Hungary took silver with Britain’s Luke Greenback battling back from an agonising fourth place finish at the Commonwealth Games two weeks ago to secure bronze so I’m really proud for me and my country,” Ndoye Brouard told LEN TV “It was hard work mentally (after the semi-final) but I can deal with that and this is a big result for me.”  Yohann Ndoye Brouard finished behind two fellow Hungarian swimmers With only two permitted to progress Hosszu supported from the stands as teenage rising star Viktoraia Mihalyvari-Farkas claimed her first major international title and team-mate Zsusanna Jakabos joined her on the next step of the podium Britain’s Freya Colbert added to her impressive breakthrough season with bronze The final event of the night – the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay – looked to be heading the way of Sweden who lead after each of the first three legs Britain’s Freya Anderson is a specialist at bringing home relay golds for her nation and she endured the British women would retain the title they won at Budapest 2020 Sweden took silver with the Netherlands completing the podium places “We’ really happy with that,” GB’s Anna Hopkin told LEN TV “We didn’t know how we’d line-up against all the other teams after a tiring year but I’m really proud that we defended our title and came out with a win.” FOR ALL OF THE Swim Clinic, Lifestyle, Opinion Courtesy of Kim Vandenberg / Excelle Sports and Mutual of Omaha BREAKOUT Swim Clinic Olympic gold medalist and Stanford graduate Maya DiRado was an absolute sensation in the pool at the Rio Olympics She swam her way to four medals: two gold in the women’s 200m backstroke and 4x200m freestyle relay and a bronze in the 200m individual medley Maya Dirado – 2016 Rio Olympics/photo credit Simone Castrovillari Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu was leading the entire race until the final 25m when DiRado kicked it into fifth gear and charged to the wall for the gold medal win DiRado surrounded herself with success in her teammates and coaches leading up to Rio was selected as the Olympic team assistant coach Stanford teammates Simone Manuel and Lia Neal each secured spots on the Olympic roster Celebrating the success of her swims alongside Meehan and her fellow Cardinals was an emotional moment for all As she reflected on her Rio experience with Excelle Sports DiRado explained how she never expected her phenomenal results and how her decision to retire from the sport after the Rio Games was never contingent on her medal count DiRado reflected on her unbelievable swims her teammate Manuel’s historic gold medal win in the women’s 100m freestyle the lack of sleep and all the emotional moments during this summer’s Games Kim Vandenberg: Congrats on your incredible performances in Rio Maya DiRado: Thank you To get to go there with my Stanford teammates and coach and all the other amazing members of Team USA made it especially wonderful we had 4,000 people come to watch a practice in San Antonio I also remember looking around the pool at 11:30 at night in Atlanta thinking how lucky I am to be on a team where these people put their lives on hold for 6 weeks to help make our dreams come true Allison Schmitt, Maya Dirado Katie Ledecky 4×200 relay podium – 2016 Rio Olympics/photo credit Simone Castrovillari Then when we finally got to Rio it was obviously time to perform but the team and coaches did an amazing job of making sure we used the moment to our advantage I mean that we used the excitement of the games to elevate our performance instead of looking at it as pressure and stress exhausting and quite literally unbelievable I wanted to medal in all three of my events and I wasn’t even sure I’d be on the relay We just got our Olympic rings this past week and all the gold medalists have it engraved on the side of their rings I remember being told at team processing in Omaha that that would be added and thinking The week went better than I really ever imagined it could go KV: What was the most memorable race for you to swim in and to watch MD: Days five through seven of the meet were out of control The day of the relay I got to the competition pool around 1:00 p.m to just to a loosen after coming off the 200 IM final the night before I was just preparing for the 200 back prelims the next day when I was back in the dining hall I get a text saying that I was swimming that night My heart rate skyrocketed so fast and didn’t calm down until maybe the next morning Just getting to be on a relay with three other swimmers whom I love and admire was the greatest joy Then the next night it gets even crazier when Simone won her gold Getting to share that moment with Lia [Neal] and Simone and Greg after grinding day after day with them for two years was cathartic in the best way Then the next night was the 200 back final where it really got insane I think from day six till when I left Rio I had maybe 10 hours of sleep total but was absolutely riding this ridiculous high that allowed me to do back to back 12 hour days of media and not die Maya Dirado – 200 back – Olympic Gold – podium – 2016 Rio Olympics/photo credit Simone Castrovillari KV: Did you get a chance to watch other events and meet other athletes I was swimming basically the entire meet and then when I was done it was all media until the night I left I would have loved to go see water polo or some diving or beach volleyball I got to meet the gymnasts and see some Stanford athletes around the village KV: Did you get to explore Rio and travel around after the Games I did get to see Copacabana and Ipanema from afar which were so gorgeous but I didn’t get to do any sightseeing I’d love to go back though at some point and get to see it from a different point of view About Mutual of Omaha BREAKOUT Swim Clinic Josh and Shantel Davis operate the Mutual of Omaha BREAKOUT Swim Clinic and work closely with each client to Kim Vandenberg / Excelle Sports and Mutual of Omaha BREAKOUT Swim Clinic excluding probably Hungarian fans were sincerely excited by DiRado’s win at 200BK But I agree with Maya that the most memorable will be her 4×200 relay I am very grateful for what she brought to this relay As in the cases of Australian 4×100 free relay and Ledecky’s 800 it was the most predictable gold medal But after Franklin’s set back with her 1:57 in the morning there was a real concern of saving this gold and the replacement was urgently needed Maya DiRado was the only risky choice left because Simone would have double that night There were a lot of doubts expressed online about the reasoning of such decision But she was probably… Read more » Pretty sure the coaches read the Swimswam comments section the greatest race Q: How was the preparation for worlds different A: The ISL (International Swimming League) season started a month after the Olympics I didn’t have that much time to sit down and take a break and breathe It was really busy and exhausting at times Our team (the Toronto Titans) exceeded expectations It built some great momentum and I started regaining some confidence Q: Did you approach the race differently at worlds where there’s room for the most improvement You swim enough races to know when you feel rested and strong I knew I could push every stroke and have the swim of When news broke about Olympic gold medalist swimmer Joseph Schooling and his cannabis confession many quickly assumed that Singaporeans would tear him down.  understanding and also sympathy for Schooling’s plight.  Schooling issued a public apology on Instagram and stated that he regrets his actions.  He said that it was “a moment of weakness” following “a very tough period of my life.”  “I made a mistake and I’m responsible for what I’ve done I will make amends and right what is wrong Fellow athlete Soh Rui Yong was among the first to show his support in a Facebook post where he inspired the public to show their support for the national swimmer as they did when he won an Olympic Gold for Singapore.  Straits Times sports commentator Rohit Brijnath also penned a poetic piece on the situation and reminded readers that “criticism is valid but empathy has a place here.” Hugo Boss also affirmed their decision to stand by him and maintains that their support for him remains “strong and unwavered.” Schooling has been an ambassador for the brand since 2018.  Communications expert Lars Voedisch said in an interview with Channel News Asia: “It’s not the end of the line for him because he has a lifetime value as the superhero from the little red dot that did what the Michael Phelps of this world achieved.” Joseph Schooling will always be Singapore’s first Olympic gold medallist and nobody can take that away.”  Perhaps one of the most prominent voices to speak up on the incident is Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.  In a Facebook post yesterday he made a point of saying that Singaporeans should “give them our support and backing” referring to both Schooling and his teammate Amanda Lim.  He also seemed sure that Singaporeans “will be gracious” and reminded the public that these two athletes had worked very hard – and in Schooling’s case even achieved an Olympic Gold for Singapore he maintained that both Schooling and Lim will be treated like any other who has broken the law.  If you think the online community would be doubly harsh on him – well Shanmugam and on platforms like Twitter and Reddit have been largely encouraging and positive – most expressing more displeasure at the government and media for the negative slant on approaching the incident.  Meme and satire page The Mockingbird mocked the government’s current rule on drug use by Singaporeans overseas being a crime Popular meme-r Yeolo also weighed in on the “cannabis experts” in the country.  Photo: yeolo.sg Instagram page So if the general sentiment is to lift Schooling up forgive him for his error or move on to other more important news Besides the run-of-the-mill haters and commenters leaving vicious and snarky zingers in comment sections the only ones not onboard the Schooling train appear to be big government bodies.   The ruling by the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to revoke his leave privileges to train or compete while still in National Service (NS) will mean that not only might he miss upcoming key competitions it could also hamper his progress as a national swimmer.  The sporting organisations have also stood by their zero-policy stance with Singapore Swimming Association president Mark Chay stating that he is disappointed by the actions of Schooling and Lim “Drugs have no place in our society and we take a zero-tolerance stance towards illegal drug use,” he added.  The current law states that any Singapore citizen or permanent resident found to have abused controlled drugs overseas will be treated as if they had abused drugs in Singapore is also now being brought to question Get the best of Coconuts delivered to your inbox Copyright © 2025 Coconuts Media Limited Terms Of Service Privacy Policy
