The municipalities of Fonte Nuova and Fiano Romano
with 32.491 and 16.027 eligible voters respectively
There are 81 thousand voters in nine municipalities of Lazio for the 2025 administrative elections scheduled for Sunday 25 and Monday 26 May
for municipalities with over 15 thousand inhabitants
is scheduled for Sunday 8 and Monday 9 June
There are six small municipalities called to the polls: Sant'Angelo Romano (4.945 voters)
in the province of Rome; Contigliano (3.689 voters) and Pescorocchiano (1.928 eligible voters)
in the province of Rieti; Itri in the province of Latina with 10.371
Among the cities that do not have a runoff
and will therefore elect their mayor in the first round
the smallest municipality is Ponzano Romano
It's a different story for the big cities where they go back to the polls in June
if none of the candidates gets 50 percent plus one of the preferences
In total there are 10 candidates for mayor: two for Fonte Nuova
In Fonte Nuova the center-right and center-left are competing for the tricolor sash
On one side the sports entrepreneur Umberto Falcioni
On the other side the art curator Giorgio Bertozzi

Listen to the airplane; it has a story to tell
That was the advice of veteran pilot Riccardo De Nardis
and me over the ancestral homeland of Mary’s parents in the province of Frosinone in west central Italy
The trek from our pilot’s Sabaudia Flying Club was over the lush Pontine Marshes and Circeo National Park
We reveled as the striking late November colors enhanced the region’s abundant rolling forests of greens
We were grateful for the bright blue skies and mostly calm conditions after days of rain and gusting winds that meant closed runways
We trusted De Nardis and his decades of aviation expertise
It was enriching to renew friendships from 2019
We also renewed acquaintances with his 1977 Cessna
which De Nardis named La Iena (the hyena)
it was dusty and smelled like the animal that lives in the African savannah of his home country of Zambia. La Iena needed major cleaning to be operational
We maintained faith in De Nardis when an unexpected wind gust gave the airplane a sharp jolt with a seemingly several-foot
But we wondered what La Iena was trying to tell us
De Nardis instantly adjusted his flight path—no problem
I was glad I’d packed extra pants in our car
As with our flight with De Nardis over a nearby area three years prior
we enjoyed the view from about 2,000 feet and its different perspective from ground level
Ground level can be challenging in Ceccano and especially in Castro dei Volsci
where the upper part of the town is planted on a hilltop that rises about 1,500 feet from the Sacco River valley
It is easy to take top-notch photos with the verdant forests and rolling hills
But the Cessna couldn’t tell us much of Castro’s steep
winding roads and walkways that make for challenging living and sightseeing
Mary and I joke that mountain goats wear oxygen tanks and hiking boots
Mary and I were thrilled to be among many of her paternal Micheli cousins
Mary was ecstatic during our numerous dinners and evenings with family
Family surname Micheli was changed by Ellis Island officials to Michael when her grandfather
Her grandfather was one of 10 children; many Micheli offspring reside in Ceccano
Destination cooking villa Casa Gregorio was our home in Castro for three weeks
During prior visits in 2013 and 2019 we befriended its developer and owner Gregory Aulensi
a Michigan native with dual citizenships in the United States and Italy
Aulensi discovered an abandoned seventeenth-century
12,000-square-foot structure during a 2006 visit
sank lots of time and money in state-of-the-art restorations
He acquired additional neighborhood properties in 2015
and expanded cooking experience options in 2016
Castro government and tourism officials in mid-November presented Aulensi with an Award of Excellence for his leading role in attracting tourists from around the world
Casa Gregorio has hosted thousands in luxurious style during its nine-month annual tourist season over the years
Aulensi also provides many jobs to local residents not only at Casa Gregorio but through nearby businesses such as La Ferriera winery; Vincenzo Di Folco olive grove; a butcher shop; and a bakery that guests visit during their week of cooking
Patrons get an up-close view of daily life in the region along with cooking and baking experiences
Rinaldo Gaspari, president of AOPA Italy
“Currently we're very busy against the restrictions that ENAC (the national FAA) would like to implement to limit the use of private airstrips that are more than 230,” Gaspari said
Another important intervention by AOPA Italy with the newly elected national government is to eliminate the luxury tax of 1.25 euros per kilogram of aircraft weight to the government
and a tax of 100 euros for passengers on all air taxi flights within 1,500 kilometers
An Italian-American Thanksgiving feast was a highlight of our stay
Per the Casa Gregorio tradition that no guest ever goes hungry
Aulensi and his crew prepared acres of turkey
Mary chipped in with homemade pies of pumpkin and apple
A brisk post-dinner walk up and down and up and down the countless steps of Castro made room for more food
The Casa Gregorio tradition of ample cuisine lives on
Located between Naples and Rome and their major airports and train depots, Casa Gregorio is conveniently accessed with a train stop in Castro. Driving from the Sabaudia Flying Club is about 50 minutes. The Aero Club Della Ciociaria in Frosinone is about a half-hour drive
Sabaudia also hosts several outstanding restaurants
a Castro friend who drove us to the flying club
Di Sere’s outdoor patio with sumptuous cuisine and cold beer was a relaxing postscript to an adventurous day in the air

So feel free to watch the moon shine from June 13-15
It gets its "strawberry" name from the short strawberry harvesting season it coincides with
The full moon of June will be the lowest full moon of 2022
with the moon rising just 23.3 degrees above the southern horizon early on June 15 for observers in Washington
That's because its coming ahead of the summer solstice on June 21.

The comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will soon make its closest approach to Earth before heading out of the solar system altogether—perhaps never to return
Here's how you can watch the cosmic snowball zoom past our planet from the comfort of your own home
C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was first spotted by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF)—an astronomical survey conducted by the Palomar Observatory
near San Diego in California—on March 2
and is located around 31 million miles away from Earth
"This is certainly a once-in-a lifetime chance to see this object," Chris Pattison
a senior research associate with the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth in the U.K.
"Any object this rare is interesting to see
It's relatively rare for comets this bright to pass this close to Earth
and it's even more interesting when they are a nice color."
Comets are astronomical objects made up of frozen gases
Sometimes referred to as "cosmic snowballs," these objects are blasted with increasing amounts of radiation as they approach our star
This process forms a glowing atmosphere around the comet's nucleus, known as a coma—which, in the case of C/2022 E3 (ZTF) appears green—and two vast tails of gas and dust
the comet reached its closest point to the sun—referred to as perihelion—and it is set to make a close approach to Earth on February 1
when it will come within roughly 26 million miles of us
Around the time that the comet reaches its minimum distance from our planet—when it is predicted to be at its brightest—the Virtual Telescope Project (VTP) will be providing a live stream so you can watch the object as it flies by
The VTP is a service provided by the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Ceccano
that operates and provides access to robotic
The live feed is scheduled to begin 11 p.m
In collaboration with Telescope Live—a project that also operates remote telescopes and provides online services for astronomical photography—the VTP will capture images of the comet and share them with viewers in real-time
The best estimates of this comet's orbit around the sun indicate that it may never return to the solar system
it will not pass again for a very long time
The object's observed magnitude is just below +6
which means it is theoretically already visible to the naked eye under ideal conditions
meaning very dark skies with low light pollution
the comet will be difficult to spot unaided
There have already been reports of the comet being observed with the naked eye from dark sky locations—although it is visible only as a small, diffuse smudge. Most people will need binoculars or a telescope to find it
if you are not a relatively experienced stargazer

A newly discovered asteroid will come very close to Earth this week.
For comparison, most geostationary satellites orbit at an attitude of around 22,200 miles (35,800 km).

2011 UL21 makes an official close pass of Earth once every three years
That’s when it orbits within 1.3 astronomical units of the Sun — the criteria for a “near-Earth” asteroid
Near-earth asteroids zip past Earth at a cozy distance of 45,000,000 kilometers or closer
2011 UL21 will buzz the tower on June 28-29 at about 6.6 million km. It’s the closest approach the asteroid has made in over a century, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory
It’s a moot point because there’s zero chance a collision will occur, the European Space Agency (ESA) reassured
but 2011 UL21 would wreak mass destruction if it hit Earth
Spacereference.org estimates 2011 UL21’s size to be 1.7-3.9 kilometers in diameter — about five times smaller than the space rock that killed the dinosaurs
it’s bigger than 99% of all known near-Earth asteroids
If an asteroid were the size of a 20-story building, it would be just 3% as big as 2011 UL21. Still, it would rip into Earth with a force similar to today’s biggest nuclear bombs
completely destroying any major city it hit
Such collision damage could spread to a continental or even planetary scale
it will harmlessly delight stargazers by making a close
A livestream by the Virtual Telescope Project (VTP) will broadcast the asteroid’s hurtling progress once it starts approaching this Thursday
The feed will come from the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Ceccano
Armchair astronomers in the northern hemisphere with decent telescopes may be able to catch a glimpse of it during its brightest period, from June 28-29, according to LiveScience
its arrival will coincide with another massive near-Earth object that will pass — harmlessly — much closer but wasn’t discovered until just days ago
2024 MK will cruise past Earth at about 290 km
“There is no risk of 2024 MK impacting Earth,” the ESA said
an asteroid this size would cause considerable damage if it did
so its discovery just one week before it flies past our planet highlights the ongoing need to improve our ability to detect and monitor potentially hazardous near-Earth objects.”
Coincidentally, the close-quarters celestial action all leads up to Asteroid Day on June 30. The UN-endorsed event commemorates the largest observed asteroid strike on record: the 1908 Tunguska Event
in which an airburst decimated a largely desolate Siberian region
If it seems like the Earth is a sitting duck in the shooting gallery of space, well, so is everything else in space. But astronomers now think there’s very little chance an asteroid similar to 2011 UL21 will hit Earth for the next 1,000 years
Then again, close calls are likely. Keep your eyes on the sky in 2029. That’s when Aphophis, an asteroid named after the Egyptian god of chaos, will visit next. It’s as big as the Empire State Building — and it will thread the needle between us and our orbiting satcom satellites

Three different views of the Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 as seen by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi of the Bellatrix Observatory and Virtual Telescope Project in Ceccano
The new meteor shower could amaze or fizzle out completely
A brand-new meteor shower could light up tonight's Memorial Day holiday sky on Monday and Tuesday (May 30-31) or it may be a big bust
you'll be able to watch it live online.
One NASA scientist called it an "all or nothing event."
The potential for the meteor shower comes from the disintegrating nature of Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. The comet was first discovered in 1930 and orbits the sun once every 5.4 years
coming within 5.7 million miles (9.2 million kilometers) of the sun each time.
gassy debris from Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 will spawn an impressive meteor shower
Bill Cooke, a NASA astronomer who tracks meteor showers at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville
has said it all depends on the speed of the material from the comet.
then nothing will make it to Earth and there will be no meteors from this comet."
It was Cooke who said the tau Herculid meteor shower would be "all or nothing" in the same statement

An illustration of the night sky on May 21
2024 showing the position of comet C/2023 A3 (Tsunchinshan-ATLAS) in the Virgo constellation
Tsuchinshan–ATLAS might become as brilliant as Venus
In a year in which we have already been treated to the "Great North American Solar Eclipse" in April and one of the greatest displays of Northern Lights in the past 500 years in May
what other amazing celestial attractions might 2024 have in store for us
thus giving rise to the moniker "Devil's Comet."
The only problem so far as the person-on-the-street was concerned was that both comets were difficult to see unless you were located under a dark
And even through good binoculars or a small telescope
Related: A comet coming in 2024 could outshine the stars - if we're lucky
Originally thought to be an asteroid
it was later determined that this same object was photographed six weeks earlier by the Purple Mountain Observatory (Tsuchinshan) in the east of Nanjing
China. It has since been determined to actually be an incoming comet
the comet will pass just 44 million miles (71 million km) from Earth.
These figures suggest that the comet might brighten to second or possibly even first magnitude and could develop a notable tail that could make for an eye-catching sight in the western evening sky during mid-October 2024
Read more: How to view and photograph comets
Comets originating from the Oort cloud have never passed near to the sun before and their nuclei are coated with very volatile materials that vaporize far from the sun
their brightening slows or even stops completely.
Most — though admittedly not all — comets originating from the Oort cloud usually end up being duds. Typically, as these comets cross the orbit of Mars
their steady brightening trend starts to falter
similar to a marathon runner at the 20-mile mark; "hitting the wall" so to speak
In the case of a comet having emerged from the Oort cloud
a sudden decline in brightening may be signaling that it ultimately will end up underperforming.
Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS will not get to that point in its orbit until late July. If it then continues to steadily brighten beyond that time
then there's a good chance it will evolve into an eye-catching sight
all bets for a good show are off. Until then
we here in the Northern Hemisphere will not be able to check on the status of Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS during this summer because it will be situated much too far south to be accessible with telescopes
will be able to track it in the morning sky before sunrise.
We'll need to rely on reports from these parts of the globe to tell us whether the comet is on track to possibly becoming a bright object.
Another thing that could work in our favor is that the geometry of the comet relative to the sun and Earth
places it almost in-between the sun and Earth around Oct
creating a phenomenon known as "forward scattering of sunlight." If the comet is particularly dusty
dust particles ejected from the comet nucleus would preferentially scatter sunlight in a forward direction and could cause a dramatic upsurge in the comet's brightness.
The other comet was Comet McNaught
also known as the Great Comet of 2007 and given the designation C/2006 P1
and was the brightest comet in over 40 years; easily visible to the naked eye for observers in the Southern Hemisphere in January and February 2007
this comet appeared at least twice as bright as Venus and
was visible worldwide in broad daylight next to the sun
This extreme brightness was also attributable to forward-scattering.
Some calculations suggest that Tsuchinshan–ATLAS might become as brilliant as Venus around Oct
2024 — although in the sky — like the comets of 1927 and 2007 — it will also be very near to the position of the sun
Tsuchinshan–ATLAS should sweep rapidly northward and become well-placed for viewing in the western sky by mid-October
Although it will now be fading as it recedes from both the sun and Earth

Astrophysicist Gianluca Masi ran a livestream from the Virtual Telescope Project during the eclipse
incorporating footage from spots in North and Central America from the project's location in Ceccano
While the eclipse took place over several hours
the supercut compresses the project's footage to less than a couple of minutes
That's enough time to see the moon go into shadow
In a description of the eclipse written on the Virtual Telescope website before the event
Masi said the aim was to share with viewers "the stunning beauty of such a unique event." The eclipse
took place during a supermoon — when the moon is at the closest point of its orbit around Earth
It made the eclipse "even more fascinating," he wrote
A blood moon takes place when the moon passes fully into the deepest part of the Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse
the moon only receives red light filtered through the edges of Earth's atmosphere
There are other kinds of possible lunar eclipses
such as a partial eclipse (which happens when the moon goes partially into the deep shadow) and a penumbral eclipse (when the moon passes into the lighter part of Earth's shadow
Although there are no total lunar eclipses worldwide until 2021, and none in North America in 2022, there will be a variety of partial and penumbral lunar eclipses to enjoy. You can get more details on how lunar eclipses work at this Space.com article.

All of us old enough to remember 9/11 will never forget that cataclysmic day
life will forever be intertwined both mentally and often physically with the horrors of that day
where he eventually launched a design/build firm with projects that landed him near the Twin Towers during the attack
it was difficult to see around you because of the confusion
I was placed with a group of construction workers cleaning rubble near the North Tower.”
I was moved to the overpass that crossed from one side of the road to the other
There we found a large concentration of the dead and the smell of decaying bodies was strong
thick smoke was present and I was given a white painter’s mask to stop some of the toxic fumes from being inhaled
I was moved to the entrance to the underground parking
and my fall was cushioned by some people that had fallen before me
I injured my shoulder and hit my head on a beam
I was pulled out late Thursday and taken to the hospital
I was operated on two times and still today I go for weekly therapy
then crying every time I spoke about the World Trade Center
Since PTSD at the time was not a certified condition approved by the WTC commission
my hospital and doctor bills were not covered
Things got even tougher when I was not able to keep my construction company going
and about the same time my wife and I divorced
who was purchasing a home in Orlando because she wanted to move from France to Florida
Susan had spent over $500,000 for my doctors and all the tests
doctors insisted a Brain SPECT test and when the results came in
My brain function was extremely compromised
It showed that I was exposed to toxic fumes that stopped the oxygen from reaching by brain and permanently damaged the temporal lobe
It affected my short term memory and my ability to fully comprehend
We saw dozens of doctors and the results were the same
I was being treated and given prescription drugs through a program New York state has for uninsured volunteers at the WTC
Susan decided that a better way was to take me out of stressful situations and take me back to Italy
where I could be happy and feed my brain with healthy foods
Susan sold her café in Merritt Island and our home and we moved to Italy in August
the same month I had moved to the United States 43 years earlier
We lived on a mountainside facing the Gulf of Gaeta and Susan started cooking food she called brain food and started a B & B to help us financially
When I can’t remember something or make a mistake
she tries to get my mind off my problem by bumping into me to get my attention
She came into our lives at a moment when we needed an angel
we saw that I needed doctor’s care a lot more often and in Italy and I could not get the level of care that I was used to
Some appointments would take six months to get
so again we left everything behind and bought a home in Brevard
I have a lung condition discovered this year
They cannot certify that it was directly related to 9/11
All the doctors showed that dementia is directly related to my work during 9/11
Someone decided which sickness was directly related to 9/11
if enough people get with the same sickness then it gets certified for coverage
Many people have died because they were not treated
and the same thing is happening to me today
and here I am still fighting for help and fighting health issues
not just because it brings back bad memories that have never left
but also because the injuries are slowly erasing the rest of my past and present
Everyone makes fun of these books – and film versions like Inferno
Yet the author of the Da Vinci Code is still hugely popular
film critics compete for the most withering remark about either Brown or the film-makers who prop up his work
the critics and the skeptics have never managed to get any traction against what is now a cultural juggernaut
and other dumb-but-fun global publishing hits
and Angels & Demons – before deciding to move permanently into the world of letters
As a writer, Brown takes himself very seriously. Here is the sort of thing he says in interviews, this one with the Independent on the eve of Inferno’s publication: “Although I studied Dante’s Inferno as a student
it wasn’t until recently that I came to appreciate the enduring influence of Dante’s work on the modern world
I am excited to take readers on a journey deep into this mysterious realm … a landscape of codes
several years and several clunkier books to get Brown the bad reputation he now enjoys among cultural commentators
Or albino monks that attack people in famous art galleries
and they love to do that in the context of a murder which involves a pentacle carved in blood on an art curator’s chest
Brown’s claim to be an authority here has a bit of tarnished. He has been accused of plagiarizing the book at least twice
though in both cases the writers claiming copying had their claims dismissed from court
There is also a considerable body of literature that challenges Brown’s factuality
for even as his book has positioned itself as fiction it takes
considerable authority from its promise of facts
Much of the criticism comes from Christian writers and historians
They chiefly object to the conclusion of the Da Vinci Code
the thing Langdon finds out after winding his way through counter-intuitive readings of great works of art
It’s been in the cultural air for a decade so I think it no longer counts as a spoiler: Langdon claims to discover that Jesus Christ did not die on the cross
“Dan Brown’s story needs a married Jesus to establish a deeper
more sinister point that he is trying to make with his audience,” railed a writer in the conservative American Spectator in 2006
(Regrettably this lectern-thumping article does not seem to be available online.) “..
traditional Christianity is oppressive toward women.” One might see this as less a sinister point than self-evident truth
It was obviously their anxiety about that particular claim that provoked so much of the nervous conservative reaction
Still, even less ideologically minded people have pointed out that much of Brown’s view of history is hogwash. For starters, the Priory of Sion, an organization integral to the plot of The Da Vinci Code because it is protecting the secret of Mary Magdalene and her daughter, likely never existed even though Brown clearly thought it did
conspiratorial interpretations of the paintings he describes in the book drive art historians to drink
without the hidden meanings Brown attributes to it
reported that parishioners had often already heard lectures or read articles that argued against the veracity of the book’s claims
“Attitudes toward these lectures and towards articles that pooh-poohed the claims of the book were generally negative,” he wrote
is that The Da Vinci Code inconveniently hit the Roman Catholic church right after the devastating series of sex abuse scandals in the late 1990s
People had good reason to believe the church was hiding something from them
a vast conspiracy that began centuries ago about an abstract church issue – the divinity of Christ – was undoubtedly easier to contemplate than the sex abuse scandal
It was easier to argue about things that happened centuries ago
than the things that were happening right now
however dubious his history and however ham-fisted his prose
people found in those book a general cause they can believe in
they’ll all still be buying tickets to a long
long film whose action consists chiefly of Tom Hanks furrowing his brow
The Virtual Telescope Project 2.0
1997 was an important year for the Virtual Telescope history
asteroids became one of the favorite scientific topic at the observing site now hosting our project
there was not an observatory at all: all the astronomical activities were made through a 6″ newtonian reflector (on the left)
measuring the position of a known minor planet
Those measures were needed to prove to the Minor Planet Center that accurate astrometry could be done from Ceccano
so the Minor Planet Center gave us the observatory code: 470 – Ceccano
The animation above shows asteroid Joella while it moves across the stars
as from the images captured that night of Sept

On 21 May 2014 a supernova candidate in Messier 106 discovered by the PanSTARRS team was reported via CBAT and ATel
At Virtual Telescope we very promptly managed to do optical and spectroscopic follow-up
confirming the existence of the transient and clarifying it was indeed a Type II supernova (see below)
Above is a single 300-seconds exposure, remotely taken with the PlaneWave 17″ robotic unit part of the Virtual Telescope and shows the supernova very close to the nucleus of the hosting galaxy

that just happens: a few times I had the same experience
The supermoon technically has been in the sky since Sunday
But it will reach its peak around 5:22 pm IST on Tuesday
It will be visible until the Moon sets late Wednesday night or Thursday morning
The Moon is at its brightest and largest 🌕Watch the sky at 7:52am ET (11:52 UTC) on June 14 to gaze upon the Strawberry supermoon—when the Moon is both in its full phase and near perigee, or its closest point in orbit around Earth.Read our Moon guide: https://t.co/K0xnkQwDMc pic.twitter.com/HfbIUAgprR
Just before sunrise and immediately after sunset are the best times to watch the celestial event as the Moon will appear the biggest at these times. The Virtual Telescope Project in Ceccano, Italy
