basketball scoring record with 691 points as the Lancers finished 21-11 and captured a Class 4A regional championship Cerese headed into his senior campaign as a well-known commodity Cerese finished the year with a 23.1-point average and shattered his own single-season school scoring mark with 760 points the 6-foot-3 guard helped lead Lake Park to their first DuKane Conference title with an unblemished 14-0 record tying their school record for most victories in a season while capturing back-to-back 4A regional championships In addition to earning tournament MVP honors at Wheaton Academy during Thanksgiving week and all-tournament recognition at the Pekin Holiday Tournament in December Cerese was named as the DuKane Conference Player of the Year after averaging 22.6 points in 14 contests he was selected to the Illinois Media All-State second team Cerese can add another postseason honor after being named Captain of the Daily Herald’s 20-23-2024 DuPage All-Area boys basketball team and 79% at the free-throw line while averaging 3 rebounds and 3 assists per game Lancers coach Billy Pitcher knew Cerese would be a marked man this season I actually thought there was a chance that Camden might average less,” said Pitcher yet he was still able to average 23.1 points per game — incredible There are very few high school players who can score 20-plus points per game — in 32 minutes and in our conference Pitcher watched Cerese improve all facets of his game this season “He scored a little more and became a much better passer,” said the coach he almost always guarded the best player on the opposition — guys like JJ Hernandez (Glenbard North) He knew our plays probably better than I did and he knew where the other guys needed to be Pitcher remembers seeing Cerese for the first time as a middle schooler prior to his arrival at Lake Park “His freshman year was the COVID year — we had some specific workouts that fall,” said the coach “I remember how good he was as a freshman and discussed moving him up to varsity but we let a senior-dominated group play their varsity year he went right at a senior on a drive to the basket He never missed a workout or a morning run He’s such a competitor — he never wants to lose.” That competitive drive wasn’t lost on his coach “We leaned on him more this year,” said Pitcher there was no need to call a late timeout — we’d just give the ball to Cam he’d make the right pass to an open teammate.” Cerese enjoyed a lengthy list of big-time accomplishments this season he scored his 1,000th career point on a free throw during a home victory over St Cerese hit the game-winning shot during the Lancers’ 51-49 overtime victory over downstate Morton in the semifinals of the Pekin tournament “That was when our team realized how good we could be,” said Cerese Following a title-game loss to eventual 3A state runner-up Mt the Lancers rattled off 16 consecutive victories highlighted by a 38-35 win over York and a 44-42 double-overtime home triumph over Glenbard North — on Cerese’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the top of the key “That was a great experience,” said Cerese I took the inbounds pass from (teammate) Matt Geraci The place went nuts — the most fans I’ve ever seen at a home game.” “I started playing basketball when I was 5 years old,” he said “I played some football up until eighth grade Playing alongside classmates Tommy Rochford Cerese thoroughly enjoyed his senior season “We had a lot of team dinners and great times It was enjoyable off the court as well — that was more important to me than the on-the-court stuff.” who credits AAU coach Ray Tillman (Greater Purpose Athletics) for his continued training workouts is currently undecided on a college choice — he has received a D2 offer from Lewis “There’s some D1 interest and D2 schools involved as well,” said Cerese who calls himself a ‘2-way player and 3-level scorer.’ “I’m still talking with schools and will likely make a decision in the next month or so.” “It’ll be hard for any coach to keep him off the floor,” said Pitcher He’ll make any team he goes to better because he works so hard Joe Cerese of South Ozone Park with a Senate Citation acknowledging his service to our country and community I like to say that every day is Veterans Day and I will continue to work on improving the services our veterans receive credit for honesty His first words after the Lancers knocked off Fenton 45-33 on Saturday were: ‘‘That’s probably why people want the shot clock.’’ it was a solid game between two evenly matched teams But Pitcher changed things up in the fourth quarter by using a spread offense to run down the clock and hold on to an 11-point lead ‘‘We blew a 21-point lead [Friday] against Batavia Lake Park (15-8) made good decisions and saw the game out It’s easy to see why killing the clock is so enticing for coaches ‘‘Our job is to win the game,’’ Pitcher said ‘‘We forced a couple of shots [Friday] and let Batavia back in the game Lancers junior Cam Cerese has been one of the breakout players of the season He had 14 points and five rebounds against Fenton ‘‘I did not see [Cerese’s] breakout coming at all,’’ Pitcher said ‘‘There is always a guy that surprises you every year but it is usually a sixth or seventh man.’’ Cerese said it was simply hard work that led to his improvement working as hard as I could,’’ Cerese said Saturday ‘‘It’s definitely been rewarding to see it pay off this season.’’ Cerese said he’s definitely ready for the shot clock which the IHSA has approved for use in shootouts and tournaments It’s expected to be another few years before it is in place for every game ‘‘It really sucks when you are down and you have to watch the other team kind of do what we did tonight,’’ Cerese said Lake Park led 18-10 after one quarter and never trailed Fenton scored the first seven points of the second quarter to cut the lead to one but never mounted another significant threat Junior Dennasio LaGioia led the Lancers with 16 points and 6-5 junior Tommy Rochford added 10 points and 10 rebounds Junior Alejandro Diaz led Fenton with 15 points and Caleb Lewis added 10 The Bison (18-7) are having one of the best seasons in school history Fenton never has won a sectional and has won only two regionals The Bison’s 18 victories this season are already good enough for third-best Opening Reception will be held on Friday during Arts In Rockland's first Friday art walk in August Irma has always been fascinated with color and her primary interest in painting is focused on color relationships Her current paintings use the intrinsic beauty and evocative qualities of color to speak to our emotions Her landscape compositions become an entry point into her paintings rather than depict a specific location or illustrate an idea "I use landscape both as a point of connection and departure but I don't wish to tell a story so I don't "return to a place in the studio" I convert the primary elements of what inspired me in the first place - trees - into an underlying loosely geometric structure The resulting images often border on the abstract although I often seek to evoke the general atmosphere of the subject So I don't seek to inspire people viewing my work with this or that place; I aim to produce evocative work that is compelling in its own right as a celebration of visual experience." Irma Cerese received her formal training at the Academy of Art and the School of the Art Institute Irma maintained a studio in New York City until 1985 and her paintings are in numerous private corporate and institutional collections in the United States and Europe is Irma Cerese's principal gallery affiliation and the gallery has held 11 consecutive solo exhibitions for her paintings since 2007 Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 a.m For more information (207) 239-1223 or www.LandingArt.com Thanks to our readers and especially our supporters who help to keep PenBayPilot.com an open and accessible community hub Your support is even more critical during rapidly changing times While we work hard to keep you informed about the Midcoast community We are grateful to those who already participate Join for as little as $2.99 per month and support local journalism on a community hub that serves everyone X Ricki and Cerese Bly's children complained they got teased for smelling like fry oil but no one is complaining about it now as the family's Taste of Soul brand announced expansion into Wichita Cerese Bly grew up with a father whom she said was a true foodie which included a trip to Egg Roll Express in Edmond every Friday for as long as she can remember which is the year I was born," she laughed She said her family loved egg rolls so much "The wrappers come with simple instructions Problem once was Cerese's specialty from the kitchen didn't resonate with her husband That's because not only did his wife adjust the seasoning to his taste but her customized egg rolls became hits with his co-workers at Mathis Brothers Furniture "People started telling me they would buy them if I brought them in to work," Ricki said where they were first exposed to the food truck uprising that began last decade and the Blys decided the time was right to start their own business It was 2012 when Taste of Soul Egg Rolls first appeared on street corners across the metro serving Cerese's distinctive egg rolls and fried rice Lines at events like the H&8th Night Market were legendarily long and pretty soon "I didn't see anybody at that time doing a chicken and waffle around town "Egg rolls were easy compared to coming up with a chicken and waffle recipe," she said "We went through so many versions before we found the one we liked." they introduced Cerese's chicken and waffle recipe to their fans but not in the way Ricki initially envisioned it She believed specializing in one product projected expertise "I told him the chicken and waffle needed it's own trailer," Cerese said "If people see a long line at a place that's only doing one thing the Blys brought their Taste of Soul brand to the Festival of the Arts which led to an even broader audience and more opportunity they opened their first stand-alone location at 301 NW 63 St taking over Suite 150 inside the White Star Petroleum Building Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch The two trailers still keep a regular schedule though many of them are private events thanks to Taste of Soul's popularity but all the people behind the scenes who supported us believed in us and helped us to get to this place." A temporary location in Penn Square Mall last year served as the catalyst for the launch of Taste of Soul's worldwide campaign "We opened on Thanksgiving Day," Cerese recalled That short time was enough to convince the Blys that when the next opportunity came along for a permanent location What they didn't expect was for the opportunity to come from another state "They really wanted us in Wichita," Ricki said "We think it's gonna be a great opportunity for us to meet some new people and make some new friends Taste of Soul will take over a space in Wichita's Towne East Mall in early fall Ricki is hopeful they can have the new store up and running in 45 days The Blys compare it to Charley's Steakery in design Cerese said she plans to eventually diversify the filling options for her egg rolls with an eye toward some day becoming an egg roll bar where people can try a variety of flavors or maybe even design their own the tried and true version of egg rolls and chicken and waffles are available weekdays inside the White Star Petroleum Building The restaurant has designated parking on the north side of the building which takes you to the first-floor entrance You can keep track of the mobile kitchens via social media: @EGGROLLicious on Twitter and Instagram; keyword Taste of Soul on Facebook but it wasn't until last week when I sat down with chef/owner Russ Johnson that I got the news confirmed Ludivine will move from its current location to 320 NW 10 Street It happens to be the same building that fronts Johnson's other property The 3,000-plus square feet of empty space once home to Archer Printing is undergoing a remodel that should be complete in time ready for an early January move Johnson promises the only changes to Ludivine will be in seating capacity and bar options "We're not changing who we are," Johnson assured me over a seafood pancake and spicy pork bulgogi from Taste of Korea "We'll be better able to accommodate large parties and host private events that don't require renting the entire restaurant now." "We've been doing a blue plate special on Mondays when the restaurant is closed but the bar is open," Johnson explained When the restaurant reopens farther north in Midtown the bar menu will be available all the time and late-night dining options at the bar will be available from R&J Ludivine splashed onto the local dining scene in October of 2010 promising a daily menu based on whatever local bounty is available and using ingredients sourced exclusively from Oklahoma ranchers and producers food-forward concept has drawn national attention and has been critical to the elevation of Oklahoma City's dining options but he is no hurry to make a fuss over their practices "It doesn't mean that much to the public when places that have terms like that all over their marketing (materials) but don't bother to correct it after they stop using local ingredients Johnson said the L-shaped concept won't be completely left behind "What we learned is the bar and the restaurant operate almost independently of each other," he said "There are people who have dined in the restaurant who don't know we have a bar and vice versa." Johnson and partner Chip Fudge have decided to continue leasing the space and operate a rebranded bar featuring the same cocktail program but with a menu of true tapas and pinchos to complement it Johnson also discussed the property in Edmond previously discussed for a concept called The Ice House Those plans were scuttled after fellow founding partner and chef Jonathon Stranger left the group two years ago Johnson said plans for Edmond are still in the planning stages with much work still to be done with the city of Edmond We'll update both developing stories in this column space in the weeks to come I will host a special "Open Flame" event my wife is enthusiastically calling Lilith Fare I will be turning over the cooking duties that night from 6 to 8 p.m to the female side of Oklahoma City's chef community I'll be announcing the cooking roster next week but for those who want to get a jump on tickets Tickets will be $50 for a chance to meet the city's most talented spatula-wielding women in between wine and beer tastings and a very cool lineup of female entrepreneurs Today we say goodbye to the original Irma's Burger Shack Each place served a common stretch of NW 63 Street dutifully for many years No word yet on plans for either of those spaces though replacement looks likely for at least one of the buildings but the neighborhood now has more dining choices than ever before Besides the newly minted Hopdoddy franchise and the imminent Slapfish arrival we also have Osteria to look forward to later this year the concept backed in part by KISS members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons they're readying for the mid-September arrival of Firebirds Wood Fired Grill Oklahoma's first Firebirds location will seat 230 will offer free lunch to first-responders on Sept which will precede the restaurant's official opening he and his Lake Park teammates would always run up and down the floor and score lots of points quickly so they often go out of their way to slow things down a bit Visiting Wheaton Warrenville South came to town Friday night for a key DuKane Conference battle in Roselle and did their best to bottle up Cerese and Company using a patient offense and solid zone defense to limit the points on both sides in the first half But the Tigers learned that you can only slow up Cerese and his team for so long Lake Park had a 46-26 victory to stay atop the conference standings as the team’s sharp-shooting senior guard finished with the same number of points as the visiting team tallied “In the first half we were just trying to get used to their zone And they’re very slow in their offense…they hold the ball for two to three minutes so it was tough to get in a good rhythm,” said Cerese whose 26 points came in a variety of fashions that included a trio of 3-pointers and numerous cuts to the rim “But the second half we picked it up and pushed the ball a bit and that got us momentum.” 5-0) opened the second half with baskets from Dennasio LaGioia and Thomas Rochford and then Cerese added a pair of 3s as the hosts went up 28-16 after three quarters on their way to a 20-point win over the Tigers We got the ball in the middle and Tom [Rochford] was making the right reads every time I’m not a big fan of the zone because it slows it down especially in the second half when the Lancers got rolling The Tigers were led in scoring by Luca Carbonaro who knocked down three 3s and finished with 12 points but he missed valuable minutes with a bloody nose “Obviously our goal was to hang around and give ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter…we just wanted a couple shots to go down in the third quarter and keep us around,” explained Tigers assistant coach Matt Stellwagen who ran the team on Friday in the absence of head coach Mike Healy “It didn’t work that way…there’s extremely talented offensive players on their side They made good shots and we had to scramble.” Rochford scored all 8 of his points in the second half and also had a game-high 7 rebounds for the Lancers while Zach Rogers scored 7 points for the Tigers who will travel to Bloomington for the State Farm tournament over the holidays Lake Park coach Billy Pitcher credited the Tigers with a great effort I have so much respect for them and their program and their system,” Pitcher said of WW South Their defense is so tough and they created some turnovers on us early We just can’t simulate their defense in practice much as we try.” But eventually the Cerese-led Lancers were able to do their thing “Once we were able to settle down and stop turning it over we got some stops and were able to run and get some transition,” Pitcher added he’s really good in the open floor like that Lake Park’s Camden Cerese (1) shoots the ball against DeKalb Lake Park senior Cam Cerese’s face lights up when he’s asked about the expectations placed on his team this season. The Lancers’ internal goals are even bigger than their No. 17 preseason ranking “Basketball is a high priority at school right now,” Cerese said “We are trying to get that state championship for them Lake Park winning a basketball state championship That statement might have some observers shaking their heads in disbelief But Glenbard West’s Class 4A state title in 2022 and Downers Grove North’s run to Champaign last season has opened eyes around the suburbs and made lofty goals appear to be within everyone’s grasp “I don’t talk about [rankings] with the guys but they see and hear everything,” Lake Park coach Billy Pitcher said “We have targets on our back and we are going to get everyone’s best game The Lancers’ preseason hype train hit a speed bump with a loss to Oak Park on opening night They had another tough test against a talented and young DeKalb squad Tuesday Cerese scored 28 points to lead Lake Park to a 50-42 victory against the Barbs at Wheaton Academy “We learned our lesson last night,” Lancers senior Tommy Rochford said We were prepared for a tough game last night.” DeKalb’s Davon Grant fouled out with the score tied at 36 Cerese attacked immediately with a steal and layup and Lake Park closed the game with a 10-2 burst to take control for good “[Grant] is such a presence on both ends of the floor,” Pitcher said “We were able to get inside more and take advantage of their lack of size without him And it was easy to just key on [junior Sean] Reynolds.” had 11 points for the Barbs (0-1) on perfect 4-for-4 shooting “We had a bad first half with opening game nerves,” DeKalb coach Mike Reynolds said “We played more of our brand of basketball in the second half but we certainly need [Grant] on the floor.” Lake Park coach Billy Pitcher prepares his team for the second half against DeKalb had eight points and four rebounds for Lake Park (1-1) Senior Dennasio LaGioia added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds Cerese is expected to be one of the area’s top scorers this year and the Lancers returned their core from last season’s 22-11 squad Matthew Geraci and 6-8 center Pavle Magazin are all more confident players now “I’m definitely going to enjoy this season more and have less weight on my shoulders and make sure to have fun,” Rochford said Division I coaches are waiting to see if his shot has improved this season “I’ve been working and putting up thousands of shots a day,” Cerese said see what offers I can get and then make a decision.” Lake Park senior guard Cam Cerese has hit some big shots for the Lancers in his storied prep career The one he made Friday night against visiting Glenbard North just might have been the biggest of all Cerese sank an off-balance 3 at the second overtime buzzer to give the Lancers a pulse-pounding 44-42 victory over the Panthers in Roselle Lake Park had to rally from a late 3-point deficit in the second OT They stayed undefeated in the DuKane Conference “It looked like it was right on line,” said Cerese of the game-winner “I felt like I played a horrible game overall,” he added “but at least I was able to make up for it at the end.” It was a difficult loss for Glenbard North which trailed almost the entire contest but played lights out in the fourth quarter getting a late steal and bucket to send the game to OT “I’m really proud of the guys tonight,” said Panthers coach Kevin Tonn “I thought they battled for 40 minutes on the offensive and defensive end “Unfortunately that last shot didn’t fall our way but I wouldn’t have defended it any differently It was just a great player (Cerese) making a great shot.” Lake Park senior forward Thomas Rochford scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half as the Lancers took a 4-point lead into intermission The Panthers trailed by 2 with under 10 seconds left in regulation when a steal and layup by Jack Schager sent the game into an extra session The game was tied 39-39 after the first OT then Panthers senior JJ Hernandez hit 3 clutch free throws in the second overtime to put his team ahead 42-39 A Cerese jumper from 8 feet cut in to the lead then the Lancers got a final chance with 1.2 seconds remaining after a Panthers turnover in the backcourt because there was such little time left,” said Lake Park senior Matthew Geraci “But they (Glenbard North) were calling out the lob swished the game-winner through from the top of the key The whole student section just stormed the floor.” said he felt that there was no doubt Cerese would sink the winner “They (Glenbard North) came in with a lot of energy but we didn’t expect it to go down to the wire like that we’re all seniors and we really wanted this.” who scored only 2 points in the first half Hernandez led the hard-luck Panthers (16-9 while teammate Jalen Crues had 11 points and 7 rebounds “and I’ve never been more proud of the guys Just how they competed on the basketball court tonight.” “I’d like to think we’re going to learn from this Lake Park’s Camden Cerese (1) drives the ball past Conant’s Austin Potocnic (4) In the next couple of weeks, basketball programs around the state will jockey for openings in the 2024 holiday tournaments. Lake Park is fortunate to have a spot at Pekin lost to Mount Carmel by 19 points in the title game this season That experience was priceless for a team with its sights set on a sectional title and more in March ‘‘It showed us where we have to be,’’ Lake Park senior Cam Cerese said ‘‘That was very helpful to play a top team like that We learned we have to be better than we are.’’ one of the top unsigned seniors in the area scored 86 points in the first three games at Pekin but was limited to 16 against the Caravan ‘‘The speed and athleticism [of Mount Carmel] was impressive,’’ Lancers coach Billy Pitcher said and any little mistake is going to be magnified Lake Park began the second half of its season against Conant on Thursday in Hoffman Estates The first two quarters were rough for both teams before Cerese asserted himself and led the Lancers to a 51-30 victory Cerese finished with a game-high 21 points He shot 6-for-9 from the field and had seven assists ‘‘[Cerese] is so persistent,’’ Pitcher said If you put a bigger guy on him to stop him inside He’s making really good decisions when he gets doubled or sees it coming.’’ Lake Park (14-3) led 18-14 at halftime before Cerese scored 12 points in the third quarter to break the game open A lot of stuff was just,‘Give him the ball and let him make a play.’ ’’ added 16 points and six rebounds and senior Dennasio LaGioia nine points for the Lancers so he really wanted to beat me and I wanted to beat him,’’ Michael said led the Cougars (7-9) with 12 points and seven rebounds who committed to Washington University in St Carmel in the finals of the Pekin tournament Cam Cerese and Lake Park felt that they had something to prove in the New Year They did just that Thursday in Hoffman Estates drove and dished as the Lancers rolled past Conant 51-30 especially in the second half as Lake Park pulled away from an 18-14 lead 17 of which came in the final two quarters the other three came on impressive drives to the hoop The only shot he missed in the second half was a desperation shot just before the half-court line that did hit the backboard “The fire half was a little slow because I was trying to get my teammates the ball,” said Cerese I just used some shot fakes and went right by them.” Lake Park coach Billy Pitcher said that Cerese’s persistence makes him dangerous all over the court “He has the ability to score in all areas of the court,” Pitcher said If they put a bigger guy on him to stop him inside It was just give Cam the ball and let him make a play.” who finished with 15 points and was the recipient of three of Cerese’s assists said he has to be ready when Cerese drives to the basket “He is always is head down going to the basket,” Rochford said Lake Park (15-2) led 24-19 early in the third quarter thank to a three-pointer and drive by Cerese He hit two more spinning drives to the basket and then a three-pointer who was able to shake free for a layup which turned into a three-point play and the Lancers led 34-21 with 1:30 left in the third quarter Leading 37-25 after three periods Cerese drilled a three That was followed by a pair of three-pointers by Dennasio LaGiola (9 points) as the Lancers scored 13 unanswered points to put the game away “That was a good second half,” Pitcher said “That was probably our best second half of the year It gives us an opportunity to get on a roll here in the second half of the year Conant (7-9) had trouble maneuvering through Lake Park’s zone The Cougars also had difficulty shooting over it “Most of the credit goes to Lake Park,” Conant coach Matt Walsh said “They are really good defensively and they are connected We will continue to practice and grind and try to get this figured out.” Brad Biedke led Conant with 12 points and six rebounds who committed last week to Washington University in St finished with 8 points while Nate Hahn came of the bench to score 7 points A jumper from Lake Park guard Josh Gerber with 3:12 left in the second quarter actually proved to be a bit more significant than one may think on first glance That was the first basket a Lake Park player has been an offensive juggernaut all season for the Lancers Charles East on Friday was largely nothing that program hasn't seen before; as Cerese finished with 37 points just shy of his career-high of 40 he achieved last month They try to find me open," Cerese said on his stellar offensive output so we have a lot of plays to get backdoor layups and stuff like that I put a lot of work in the offseason and it's paying off." Cerese started half the season last year before elevating to a full-time role this year His role a year ago was to play defense and rebound While those are elements he's still expected to bring showcased his offensive skill in a variety of ways Friday converting turnaround jumpers in the post or launching deep from the 3-point arc Cerese finished with five assists and was 11 of 19 from the field while also converting 14 points off free throws In whatever way he can find the space and points "We're lucky he's on our team and I can't believe he's only a junior," Lancers coach Billy Pitcher said We were struggling to score and I thought he made good decisions They stayed home on [Dennasio] LaGioia and [Tommy] Rochford and so he drove it really stepped up and found some of those little openings and finished 6-2) haven't suffered lopsided losses to date so each possession really matters and we have to get stops," Cerese said Cerese had 23 points at the half Friday and sustained the momentum into the third quarter The Saints began the second half with four consecutive turnovers and weren't able to find a bucket until Trent Bush's jumper with 2:56 left in the quarter The Saints were able to pull within 11 points with 3:50 remaining but the early mistakes proved to be costly It spoiled what was a relatively steady first half showing by the Saints Other standout performances for Lake Park included Gerber's 13 points Rochford had six points and three rebounds "We mismanaged a few possessions in that late second quarter We had the lead for the majority of the first half," Saints coach Pat Woods said "Credit [Cerese]: I think he had this game circled We held him to six points last time and he went off on us He did a great job with the ball and attacking the basket we start with four turnovers in a row and a five-point [Lake Park] lead goes to a 16-point lead in less than two minutes 3-4) were paced by Jacob Vrankovich's 13 points while Drew Clarke had 11 and Steven Call had 10 points "I thought Vrankovich did a nice job attacking the basket," Woods said "We're a hot and cold team and when we get cold We're not ever going to step on the court and just dominate anyone It's going to be a fight from start to finish BAKER — On a remote stretch of highway near the Nevada-Utah border sits a restaurant that may seem out of place in a town like this Kerouac's is the business of Jake Cerese and Kate Claeys a couple that gave up urban life in New York City back in 2017 to open a small-plates joint with the most impressive bar selection of spirits between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas It was a big change swapping a city of 8.4 million for a town of 60 When people hear where the owners came from How can you move from New York where there are museums and shows and culture to a place like Baker — a place that has no culture "But I wouldn't say there's no culture here," Claeys said "The people who come here come from all over the world We get a lot of culture from our guests."  Behind the bar, more than 200 bottles of spirits from all over the world line the shelves like soldiers in formation. Look a little closer, and you'll find a book: Jack Kerouac's influential 1957 novel, "On The Road."  The story, narrated by Sal Paradise tells of all the friends he met on the road The tales inside are based on Kerouac's own travels across America.  Long before they moved to Baker, Cerese and Claeys collectively traveled to more than 60 countries. The spirit of the road is what they wanted to bring to Kerouac's and a 10-room roadside motel next door called Stargazer Inn.  "We offer a dining experience that is both sophisticated and approachable," their website beckons a space where locals and travelers can sit down to enjoy a satisfying meal in a convivial atmosphere." It's an energy and vibe they go to great lengths to curate All the way down to the employees they hire to work the five or six months out of the year the restaurant is open Taking out ads on websites like Cool Works that cater to seasonal workers looking for gigs in remote and national park areas Cerese and Claeys put applicants through a rigorous interview process to make sure they would be a good fit “We like people who are already into seasonal work and enjoy remote places and enjoy traveling," Cerese said "We want people that deeply care about the guest experience are into learning and bringing something to the table about food and drink."  Workers started seeking out Kerouac's.  “Seasonal workers tend to get around,” Claeys said “They travel when they’re not working and they also talk to each other about ‘where have you worked Three of the five employees on staff this season had previously visited enjoyed the place and wrote to say they were interested in working at Kerouac’s Mallory Zeller found Kerouac's on a road trip from West Yellowstone in Montana to her native Kentucky The 25-year-old mixologist had been looking to move to a place as remote as Baker so when she found an ad for a job at Kerouac's Cerese and Claeys arranged for her to move into a house across the street with other employees who also came from elsewhere Zeller brought with her not only experience on the road but serious drink chops Kerouac's specializes in small plates — or tapas but that are perfect for a solo diner who wants to try different dishes cheese and charcuterie boards and an array of bruschetta options. A sampling of small plates could include dishes like Neapolitan Meatballs (beef chuck Kerouac's has the spirits to mix a large selection of drinks Diners can also find non-alcoholic cocktails Nevada beer — and one of the best wine lists in the state Kerouac's 2021 season runs from May 21-Oct open Wednesday through Sunday from 4-8:30 p.m Ed Komenda writes about Las Vegas for the Reno Gazette Journal and USA Today Network.
