To dispel the doubts that have been hovering over the gastronomic community for some time
the name of Agostino Iacobucci's new restaurant in Cesenatico
is read with the accent on the “ó,” as specified in the logo
and means exactly “again,” and not "Àncora"
which in Italian is the tool with which a boat is moored
It is probably the immediacy effect of the brain
as in the case when it can read words correctly with the inner letters in bulk
when “anchor” is in a maritime context it is immediately associated with the mooring implement
we meet the chef from Castellammare di Stabia and immediately ask him how he arrived at the choice of this name for the new restaurant that opened a few months ago
He explains that it is basically the Italian
I Did It Again.” “Exactly five years after the opening of Villa Zarri in Bologna,” Agostino explains
” the opportunity happened to take this new place
and one evening while chatting they made me the proposal and I thought of launching myself again in a new restaurant adventure
The space is the one that for almost twenty years hosted Magnolia
Alberto Faccani's two-star Michelin restaurant
Celestia's flash project.Approximately twenty-four covers
and with a few spurts of refined eccentricity
such as the highly polished resin counter shaded in different blues and turquoises
Agostino Iacobucci, forty-four, is chef and patron of the Michelin-starred restaurant of the same name inside the majestic Villa Zarri in Castel Maggiore, Bologna (menu story here)
He took up cooking at the age of fifteen in his aunt's restaurant in Lettere
after several internships in France and the United Kingdom
Confirmed two years later at I Portici in Bologna
which became starred within months of opening in 2019
“I think this is the time to evolve in my role as a chef and become a trainer and supporter of young people,” says Iacobucci
“I think it is necessary to do something tangible to support talented young people who may have a project but lack resources
and therefore sufficient motivation to start it: this is also why they are leaving the industry
My feeling is that at this rate the Italian restaurant industry will dissolve." For the Stabiese chef
the opening of this new restaurant in the Leonardesco Canal Harbor town also represents a family reunion of sorts
after six years in the brigade at Osteria Francescana
along with others in their early twenties are joining resident chef Marco Garattoni
he began his journey at the Berton restaurant in Milan
starting as an intern until becoming sous chef
Thanks to Berton he flew to Barcelona and for more than two years worked at Disfrutar
With Alberto Faccani there had already been brief periods of sporadic work
so back in Italy he joined the brigade of the Magnolia restaurant to fill the role of sous chef
“I always went to eat at Alberto's,” Iacobucci says
we already knew each other obviously on social media
Then a colleague told me he was about to leave Magnolia
and he married the project."“You could say I went back to my roots a little bit ,” Marco adds
“ the first years of my work at Magnolia I was in this very place
and last but not least I am close to home.”
The restaurant's clientele is predominantly local
are Bolognese with second homes in Cesenatico
former customers of Iacobucci's at Villa Zarri
The dining room is expertly run by Apulian maître Antonio Lo Basso
“Manju,” who has been following Iacobucci since I Portici
with significant experience at Enoteca Pinchiorri
The concepts that materialize in the dishes take off from cues from Marco and Agostino
in most cases starting with the ingredient
and still in the embryonic stage are shared with the whole brigade
so that there is a collective thought behind the creative phase
What comes out reveals a clear and limpid sense of taste that emerges at the precise meeting point between elegance and enjoyment
along with an aesthetic approach exhibited with extreme naturalness
respectively; in addition to the chef's free-hand menu
a la carte offerings and the lunch special
The welcoming amuse bouche set includes a flan of chard
and lightly smoked sardines; a cube of watermelon
horseradish mayonnaise; a bao with tuna sauce
trout roe; a tartlet with crabmeat and beet
A kaleidoscope of hints of sauces mimicking the tones of Russian salad accompanies the raw purple shrimp
which can be dressed in a variety of hints
including even the savory aromatics of caviar and a froth of giardiniera
basil leaves are infused into the mozzarella's water
a burst of freshness with cantaloupe melon ice cream
Hazelnut miso emphasizes the sweetness of freshly seared scallop
a raw scallop is covered with a crispy pasta shell
to be broken up and mixed with the shellfish
and certainly could not be missed in Cesenatico
The transposition of the homemade "seppia e piselli"
into haute cuisine takes place with the cuttlefish offered in four preparations
After the legendary "tortello Napoli incontra l'Emilia"
here the pasta filling is the main condiment of the most popular pasta dish in Romagna
namely spaghetto alle vongole (spaghetti with clams)
Inside the unmissable bottoni are "poverazze"
“Being originally from the sea ,” says Iacobucci,” once I moved to Bologna
I found in Cesenatico my favorite seaside location
the beautiful movement of people that reminds me of the Villa Comunale in Castellammare
Thirteen years ago when I first came with my wife
all I could see from the highway was greenery and hills
I could not get my bearings or figure out which side was the sea
so we thought of covering our risotto alla pescatora with green powder." The bitterness of the escarole gracefully contrasts the sweetness of the crispy mullet
a buffalo milk ice cream topped with a mousse of red fruits; dessert that can only be the unique and inimitable triple-rise baba
Maldon salt; a meringue with oil ganache; salted peanut; blueberry raspberry

Reflecting on the life and legend that was Marco Pantani
the mysterious but magical figure that captured the hearts of thousands
whose legend has only grown since his death in 2004
I perhaps lacked the historical perspective to understand that the most enduring cyclists built their reputation not only on their list of victories but in the way they raced and the connection they had with their fans
Pantani goes down as one of the all-time greats
almost mechanical grand tour victories of Miguel Induráin
Pantani could turn the tables on the most dominant champions with long solo attacks in the mountains that called to mind legends like Fausto Coppi
Pantani’s irreverence for the established order of his day
And while Pantani could often be evasive with the media
some of whom insisted they could estimate Il Pirata’s mood for attacking on a given day by the color bandana he wore
I only met Pantani on two occasions really
I was looking for features on up-and-coming riders
And when I noticed that his Carrera team was staying in the same hotel as me one night
I threw all protocol aside and knocked on his door after dinner in hopes of gaining an interview
The hallway was dark and when Pantani answered he was understandably confused
he refused my request for an interview on the spot
In my broken Italian I nevertheless insisted
and he agreed to meet with me at his hotel on the Monday morning after the Tour finished in Paris
And while he perhaps would have preferred to walk on by
he took the time to sit down for a short interview
I recount this anecdote not to hail my journalistic prowess
but instead to highlight Pantani’s patience and graciousness despite my professional faux-pas
and one that helped me understand the enormous impact he had on his fans later
Pantani’s career path would be volatile at best
only too often followed by setbacks and long periods of mediocrity
And when he was expelled from the 1999 Giro d’Italia for failing a drug test (a too-high hematocrit level)
his career started its long spiraling descent
I remember where I was sitting when I learned of his death on Valentine’s Day in 2004
I happened to be on a ski weekend at Chamrousse in the French Alps—not far from where Pantani displaced Jan Ullrich from the Tour yellow jersey with a long
it was somehow unsurprising as no news concerning him in his final year was good
But I was unprepared for the renaissance to follow
in the years after the ’98 Tour’s Festina doping scandal
Pantani seemed like just another 1990s athlete who’d built his career on drugs
And like so many fallen cyclists from those years
it was difficult for me to estimate their true value
let alone something as elusive as their legacy
It took me years really to understand that while Pantani was greatly flawed he had also touched cycling fans around the world like few others
but seemingly even more so; and his failings only endeared him more profoundly to his public
he remains in some ways more popular than he was in life
Aware that I misunderstood Pantani as a racer
two recent trips to his hometown of Cesenatico have allowed me to better understand his legacy
The first came in 2020 when the Giro d’Italia visited Cesenatico
And while the stage looped around the backcountry hills where he often trained
a museum dedicated to him housed in an old train station on the edge of town
the 3,200 square foot Spazio Pantani displays bikes from his entire career
the seat is set extremely low as the bike was likely too big for the teenage Pantani
like his exquisite blue-and-white Carrera to the Bianchi he used to win the 1998 Tour de France
are all on display—as is virtually every racing jersey he ever pinned a number on
Elaborate volumes of newspaper clippings recount his sporting glories
while rare videos demonstrate the immensely talented amateur rider who simply rode away from his competition race after race
Pantani was one of the most gifted riders of his generation
And when Italian pro Daniel Oss reminded me that Pantani’s tomb was also in Cesenatico
“It’s right off the main road,” Oss explained
the cemetery was open and Pantani’s grave was easy to locate; it is even identified on Google Maps
Pantani’s body rests in a large tomb with Famiglia Pantani written above the door
Inside is a simple white tombstone that’s inscribed with just Pantani’s name and dates of birth and death
Photos hanging on the wall highlight certain moments in his career
gifts from friends and fans who had recently passed by
Most were small and carried personal meanings to those that left them
a gift that only belongs to some champions
A perfect moment to reflect once more on the life and legend that was Marco Pantani

Alessandro Fabien as well as Dieter Comhair (BEL)
Marcel Bolbat (GER) and Ogenjen Stojanović (SRB)
Austrians Gabriele Obmann and Lisa Dornauer are well matched
They will also be up against Aurelia Boulanger (ITA) and local athlete Marta Bernardi
Cesenatico is regarded as a home of Italian cycling and will host the start of Stage Two of this year’s Tour de France
following the 1.9km swim off Cesenatico Beach
the 90km bike course is entirely designed in the hills of Romagna
a region located on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany with its picturesque landscapes
The final 21km run course will be a flat multi-lap route along the Cesenatico seafront – with spectators helping the athletes to soak up the atmosphere as it drives them to the finish line in Cesenatico’s Levante Park

No one could imagine that just a few kilometers from the chaos of the Riviera

whose combination with fine dining and the landscape attracts an international audience

The newest edition to the Challenge Family portfolio of events took place this past Sunday in Italy – Challenge Cesenatico
Situated on the Adriatic Coast, the port town of Cesenatico sits in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. The area itself is not completely fresh to the Challenge organisation, with past events based in Rimini and Riccione taking advantage of the stunning local roads
as well as easy transport access from almost anywhere in Europe
Cesenatico is no stranger to holding large scale sporting events either
which will take place this coming Sunday with more than 6,000 riders
It’s also a town I have visited regularly in years past
a fine location for triathlon or cycling training camps with plenty of quiet
relay and swim/bike options as well as the headline middle distance race
with 1,400 athletes represented by 22 nations first time out
which represents impressive figures for a debut edition
photographer José Luis Hourcade (www.joseluishourcade.com) was on hand to capture the race in pictures
as well as some of the amazing scenery that this region has to offer

when even the love story you’ve always wanted may come true
It is in this poetic and geographic scenario that the Netflix original series Summertime takes place – capturing our attention and taking us directly on the beaches of Romagna
Produced by Cattleya, and loosely based on Federico Moccia’s book series
Summertime is made up of three seasons (with the first one released in April 2020)
and tells the love story between Ale (Ludovico Tersigni) and Summer (Coco Rebecca Edogamhe)
two young adults that destiny brings together
Alicia Ann Edogamhe; Alberto Boubakar Malanchino
the desire of redemption and the will of believing in the future and in one’s own dreams
the filming locations perfectly reflect the essence of summer
Most of the scenes have been filmed in Romagna
each scene is filled with that sense of light-heartedness that is typical of a summer in the Riviera
recalling in the imagination of the viewers the mix of colours and experiences that has made this land famous all over the world since the 1960s
Let’s discover together the most significant places of the series – no spoiler
framed by soft dunes and a lush pine forest
as the one where Edo works in the first two seasons
Getting to the beach of Casalborsetti is not easy
Ale and Lola (Amparo Piñero) go when they look for tranquillity and light-heartedness
Casalborsetti also hosts the beach establishments where the parties and concerts of the third season take place
and where Luca (Cristiano Caccamo) shows his singing skills
“Nowhere in the world” will you find a place like this
In summer, at sunset, the sky seem to catch fire on the horizon, reflecting on the water of the lagoon and on the Pine forest of San Vitale
A fishing hut in the middle of the sea is the cherry on top of one of the most beautiful beaches of Ravenna. We are in Marina Romea
A century-old pine forest runs along wild dunes up until Punta Marina
while beach establishments live together with surfers and isolated campings in the middle of nature
you will see them go through these places in season 1 and 3
one in Marina di Ravenna and one in Porto Corsini
almost look like two long arms stretching towards the sea
Two ‘railways’ of almost 3 km length, dotted by the typical fishing huts
along which you can whether run or walk at any hour of the day
for a romantic walk or even just to feel the salt caressing their face…
there are those who take part in ‘motorcycle races’ (strictly forbidden of course!)
One of the many places where Ale, Summer, Dario, Sofia, Lola and the other protagonists of Summertime use to meet is just below the lighthouse of Marina di Ravenna, among fishing and sail boats moored in the tourist port (MarinaRa)
It is also the place where Ale lives on his sail boat in the third season of the series
This film adaptation is not so far from reality: this area has always been a meeting point for tourists and citizens who want to take a break from everyday life at the historical little bar
Not far from here is also Cestha
an excellent centre for wildlife rescue and background of many scenes in the last season
A long artificial canal connecting the city to the sea
old port warehouses witness a past that no longer exists
Today, the future of this area is made of wall murals, multi-functional spaces and avant-garde clubs (among them, for example, Darsena PopUp); but it is also a privileged destination for youngsters
who made this area a popular meeting place
The historical centre is easily recognisable in many scenes of the third season
From the spectacular Via Galla Placidia, running along the complex of the Basilica di San Vitale, to the porch of Piazza San Francesco and Via Mazzini
where Sofia and the photographer Federica meet
These few words Ale says are enough to make you understand what you feel when you step on the beach of Bassona in Lido di Dante
Just forget the typical noise of the Riviera
with enraged parents and screaming kids.Nature
tranquillity and the scent of summer reign here
just the sound of the waves and some voices carried by the wind
The Grand Hotel in Cesenatico is just a few metres from the sea
today it is the absolute symbol of the city
and it’s where Summer finds a job as a receptionist during the summer months
Right in front of the hotel is Piazza Andrea Costa
which has hosted a large and bright ferris wheel for several years now and is a popular meeting point for youngsters
From up above you can admire the city and its landscape
including the big skyscraper overlooking the sea
which is — along with the one in Rimini — a landmark on the coastline
This is what Sofia tells Dario just before diving into the blue of the Adriatic Sea
On the background are the Molo Ponente and Molo Levante docks, dotted with their typical fishing huts.
It’s the perfect spot for romantic strolls
with several little fish restaurants and a perfect skyline
embellished by the smooth colours of summer
Here is also the fishing hut of Edo’s family that he and his father (Giuseppe Giacobazzi) rent to tourists in summer
The promenade of Cesenatico in summer is an infinite multitude of light-heartedness
busy benches and ice-cream prices hand-written on blackboards
A meeting place also for Summer and his friends
among laughs and hugs but also misunderstandings
There is the canal port in Cesenatico with the ancient fishing boats and the canal in Cervia
Last but not least, the Salt Pans of Cervia at sunset
the background of a passionate meeting between Ale and Summer
Among old colonies and more modern holiday resorts
the western part of the beach is much beloved by tourists who appreciate uncrowded areas and the charm of nature
Look for the beach establishment of the series on Google Maps
It is called “Paradiso” – just like Romagna

Training, stamina and a lot of passion for cycling. For over 50 years, the Nove Colli di Cesenatico (Nine Hills of Cesenatico) bike race has gathered cyclists from all over the world to the gentle landscape of the Romagna Apennines, well-known for its close connection with this type of sport
Those who took part in the Nove Colli in the past know that the effort gradually gives way to the satisfaction of crossing the finish line of one of the best known and most popular races in Italy
taking place in the land of the famous Marco Pantani
What is the history of the Gran Fondo Nove Colli then
Irony of fate has it that the race, famous for its climbs over the hills of Romagna, was born at sea level. In 1971 a group of cyclists met at dawn at the Bar del Corso, in the historic Canal Port in Cesenatico
That was the very first edition of the Nove Colli bicycle race
It is no coincidence that the origins of the race are rooted in that very bar
a circle of cycling enthusiasts had gathered in the bar to found the Fausto Coppi Cycling Society
effectively starting the cycling activity that would soon lead to the birth of Nove Colli
From just 17 participants in that very first edition
in recent years registrations have skyrocketed to 12,000
testifying to the growing success of the event
Its national appeal reached its peak in 2020
when a stage of the prestigious Giro d’Italia was held right on the very route of the Nove Colli
While the number of participants has increased exponentially over time
the route of the Gran Fondo has always remained true to the name it bears
Nine are the hills and climbs that cyclists must tackle during the race that starts and returns to the sea
The Nove Colli is not just any cycling event
but a Gran Fondo (sometimes translated to “Big Ride”)
The characteristic feature of this type of race is the long distance
a feature that fully reflects the nature of the Cesenatico race
Its best-known route is almost 124 miles long
But it is not the only one that cyclists can choose when registering for the race
There are mainly two alternatives: the longer and more demanding route is 120-mile long
The maximum height faced along the route is 0,49 miles
while the total uphill miles are as many as 44
This is the route that gives the race its name
set in the provinces of Forlì-Cesena and Rimini (namely the Polenta
This area offers spectacular views and is dotted with lovely hamlets such as Bertinoro, Mercato Saraceno and San Leo
the latter Nove Colli route still requires a good level of training
We are talking about 80 miles with a total height difference of 1,16 miles
31 miles of climbing and a maximum height of 0,33 miles
the starting and finishing point are the same as the ones of the former route
Over the years, further races have been added to the Nove Colli, turning the race into one of the most complete cycling events in Emilia-Romagna: an even shorter 37-mile route and the Nove Colli Running ultramarathon

Starting from Rimini
let’s sit on the edge of Fontana della Pigna (once in Piazza dell’Arengo
today in Piazza Cavour) to observe the water just like Leonardo did
which described the fountain’s harmonious effect in his secret notes:
“Fassi un’armonia colle diverse cadute d’acqua
a futuristic device that would have used water not as a pump
while falling into vases of different shapes
Cesena is the city that Cesare Borgia wanted to enlarge and embellish to make it the seat of his court
In what is today the magnificent Piazza del Popolo
Leonardo made reliefs of the walls and the fortifications
The massive curtain wall of the southern front of the Rocca Nuova was changed in 1503 with the creation of walls called “alla franzoza” to face the new siege techniques
block the increasingly devastating blows of heavy firearms and have direct control of the territory
was probably approved by Leonardo da Vinci
It’s interesting to note how the shape assumed by the artillery loopholes is the same as Leonardo’s drawings
He modified the orientation and the length of the single palisades and widened the connected basins
so that the sea water could enter and accumulate
and then flow quickly during the low tides and
but the Leonardo’s Canal Port of Cesenatico is today one of the most important monuments of the city and a walk along the canal allows you to fully enjoy the architectural beauty and warm atmosphere of this seaside town
that – as said at the beginning – preserves the reproduction of the famous “Codice L” of Leonardo
Floating Maritime Museum on the Canal Port
Leonardo resumed his journey toward Faenza
where his passage is testified by the drawing he made about the Cathedral in Piazza della Libertà
whose majesty fascinated Da Vinci so much that he remembered it on his travel notebooks
we can see unequivocal anomalies respect to the Faenza’s Cathedral: the Basilica building has no polygonal apse
which would date the construction of the current apse not before 1502
a doubt that may never be totally dissipated
but that becomes a starting point to admire the beauty of this magnificent Basilica
You can’t leave Faenza without having visited its historic ceramic workshops
He talked about Faenza’s ceramic handicraft in its Hammer code
In the clamor and excitement of this parade ground
Leonardo walked with his helpers through the streets and the neighborhoods
Among the most precious fruits of his stay in Imola is the city plan
now kept in the Royal Library of the English Castle of Windsor
Our itinerary ends in the natural environment of Santerno
the river that connects Romagna to Tuscany
the homeland of Leonardo: a river that offers suggestive scenery and embankments that seem shaped for bathers
white and smooth rocks perfect as solarium
Dedicated to the “Romagna period” of Leonardo da Vinci, this small museum in Sogliano al Rubicone aims to illustrate the characteristics of the territory and its traditions through the observations and analysis of this extraordinary man of talent
The Museum is divided into two sections: a scientific one and an ethnographic one
through the exhibition of anastatic copies of manuscripts
carried out by Leonardo during his stay in Romagna
The second presents studies on the customs and traditions of the 16th century
with particular reference to the theme of water
Here we report the presence of models and images of the “concavities” made in the San Donato park

and in Emilia-Romagna you can already smell the typical atmosphere characterising December every year
The streets are lightened up with vivid colours
nativity scenes decorate shop windows and churches in the historical centres
and traditional markets fill up the squares with stands full of gifts and tasty treats
Christmas is a magical moment in Emilia-Romagna
the perfect time to spend some days with your friends and family
Especially at Christmas, Grazzano Visconti is not a village like the others
it gets surrounded by a timeless and magical atmosphere to fully experience and savour
It is just the perfect place for those who look for that Christmas spirit made of lights, markets and entertainment for the little ones
Designs and lights make the small village on the outskirts of Piacenza very unique and surprising
so much so that is visited by curious people and visitors who come here from near and far to spend their Christmas weekends
an ice-skating rink: Grazzano awaits you with a true Christmas village
where you can get lost among market stands
Comacchio, in the province of Ferrara, really has a charm beyond words. The picturesque canals and monuments make this small city – immersed in the Po Delta Park – a compelling destination all year round
During the Christmas holidays
the “small Venice” is surrounded by an even greater appeal
coloured sets and artistic nativity scenes under the bridges of the historical centre
you will find markets on boats and the Comacchioland Christmas Village with itinerant shows and funny activities dedicated to the little ones
Spending your Christmas holidays in Comacchio doesn’t only mean visiting one of the many spectacular villages in Emilia-Romagna, but also experiencing a very surprising territory rich in interesting places, such as the nearby Ferrara, or the city of mosaics Ravenna
Have you ever been to Cesenatico
you may have already admired its canal port
which is the background of the social life and promenade of citizens and tourists
And this is right the place that – during the Christmas holidays, from the first Sunday of December – hosts a unique and charming attraction: the traditional floating nativity scene of Marineria
The historical boats become a setting and host aboard a nativity scene with more than 50 life-size statues surrounded by lights reflecting on the water
the smell of roast chestnut and mulled wine
the rich stands of the markets where you can buy or taste typical products
If these fascinating proposals are not enough for you and you want more
Fanano is located at the foot of the biggest ski circuit of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the one of Mount Cimone
bound to the ancient traditions that you can still breathe by walking in the historical centre
Every two years, it also hosts the suggestive representation of the Nativity and of the ancient crafts along the streets of the village (alternating with the Living Crib in Fiumalbo)
Made of wood or stone, small or big, animated or still – every year the traditional nativity scenes flood the village of Longiano
located on the hills of Romagna (which was also honoured with the Orange Flag by Touring Club)
which gets even more unique thanks to the Christmas lights and the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the place
In the days before Christmas, Sant’Agata Feltria – known for the sale of truffles – hosts the traditional national fair “Il Paese del Natale”
which has become one of the most important winter events in central Italy
who come here to discover its rich markets characterised by a fascinating atmosphere and ancient traditions

A veteran hobbyist explains the allure of searching for treasure in a huge pine forest in the province of Viterbo
Leonardo Ciocca was a novice detectorist when he thought he’d made the discovery of the century
He had been searching for treasures beneath the earth in a patch of Umbrian countryside when his metal detector began to emit a series of high-pitch beeps
The machine indicated the presence of a deeply buried “precious” metal
“So I obviously became very excited,” said Ciocca
“I started digging and at a certain point glimpsed some silver
and thought it might be quite a large silver bar.”
the object revealed itself to be a speculum – the kind used by vets to examine the intimate parts of animals
The tool is thought to have dated to the 1960s
when the area Ciocca had been exploring was farmland
“Maybe a vet had visited a cow and left the tool behind,” he said
it is probably the strangest thing I have ever found.”
Such disappointment may have put others off
Ciocca is now one of Italy’s most revered detectorists
a community of an estimated 25,000-30,000 that has grown significantly in recent years
To the uninitiated, the assumption is that detectorists spend most of their time scouring beaches for their finds
while beaches are popular – especially post-summer when visitors have returned home
jewellery and sometimes even gold teeth – most detectorists in Italy practise their hobby inland
On a recent morning, Ciocca took the Observer to Parco del Grottone, a huge pine forest in the province of Viterbo, about 70km from Rome.
After explaining how a metal detector works, Ciocca, equipped with two other essential tools – a spade and a device that pinpoints the location of a find – contemplated which direction of the forest to walk in. Finding something worthwhile is mostly luck, he said. But also intuition. So we headed left, hovering our detectors along a path that is popular with joggers, who often drop coins.
On the edge of the path, Ciocca’s sophisticated detector made quite a vibrant beep and indicated that the item could be jewellery. So he decided to stop and dig. The anticipation was palpable. However, the object turned out to be a piece of aluminium used to package medicine. A golden rule among detectorists is to clear any rubbish they find. Subsequent beeps led to rusty nails, bits of discarded drink cans and a 20 cent coin.
The jaunt wasn’t so fruitful, but over the years Ciocca and his fellow detectorists have unearthed many gems.
Finding coins in lira, the old Italian currency, is common, but so is digging up coins bearing the face of either the first or third kings of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II and III, and dating from 1861, when the short-lived monarchy began.
“You find these coins everywhere, especially in the middle of wooded areas,” said Ciocca. “Maybe they were dropped by farmers, shepherds or people who had gone there to chop wood.”
Other finds have included religious votives dating to the 1700s, and ancient buttons worn by farmers in the hope that they would bring a good harvest.
Free weekly newsletterThe most pressing stories and debates for Europeans – from identity to economics to the environment
For Ciocca, among the most interesting discoveries is the “trench art” produced by soldiers during the first and second world wars.
“Especially the second world war when soldiers spent months and months closed in trenches,” he said. “They had to distract themselves from the horror and so took objects – cutlery, mess tins or parts of ammunition – to make jewellery and even lighters. They were very elaborate – I’ve seen bracelets made with bits of grenades.”
Detectorists have also found rings and dog-tags engraved with the names of American soldiers, and have sometimes been able to trace their relatives to return the items.
Italy is open for detectorists to freely explore, apart from some areas of Veneto and Bolzano, where permits are required, and in the semi-autonomous Aosta Valley, where the practice is banned.
hunting in archaeological areas is strictly out of bounds
There are also rules about which objects detectorists can keep – relics
must be handed to the relevant authority within 24 hours
Such is the popularity of the hobby in Italy that Ciocca set up an “academy” in Cesenatico
The beach has since become a hub for detectors
with a treasure hunt each year: whoever finds the most metal tokens buried in the sand
There is a hotel in nearby Milano Marittima dedicated to detectorists
Ciocca said he still feels like a “child at Christmas” whenever his detector makes a beep that could uncover something precious
many excursions only lead to finding rubbish
you have still had a good walk in the outdoors
in areas full of nature where the only sound is the beep and the birds

On Saturday 31st of July and on Sunday 1st of August 2021 in Cesenatico the traditional commemoration in honour of the Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi will take place
The festival dates back to the year 1885 and recalls the 2nd of August 1849
when Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived here with patriots; they had escaped from Rome and were heading for Venice
hunted both over land and sea by their pursuers
They embarked in thirteen bragozzi and faced the stormy weather
The program includes: the 31st of July at 9pm the traditional Palio della Cuccagna (greasy pole race) between the Quarters of Cesenatico on the Canal Port
The competitors must climb into a real “ascent” up an almost 14 meters long greasy pole
placed obliquely on the water of the Canal Harbour
each participant should be able to take away a bit of grease to allow others to reach the top of the tree more easily
A challenge that will declare the winner not only who will have more balance to reach “the greasy pole”
but also those who will prove more skilful than the others in pursuing a team strategy; the 1st of August at 9.30am
parade of garibaldians along the canal banks with the citizen band “Città di Gradara” and excursion by boat with the Municipal Authorities
spectacular fireworks on the beach in front of the Piazza Costa
It is an unmissable opportunity for all girls and boys born between 2010 and 2018 to have a unique experience combining sport
the bianconero Club has developed an even broader and more capillary educational offer
which extends to as many as eight different locations
from the beaches of Cesenatico to the mountains of Acquapartita
until reaching the Marche region in Pesaro appointment
The Camp will be followed by a highly qualified team formed by technicians
and observers of the Cesena FC Youth Sector and coordinated by former Cesena FC striker Davide Succi
but the program also includes numerous other experiences
and pet therapy activities. And that's not all; at each camp
participants will carry out exercises and games in English to learn the language while having fun
Also confirmed is the Camp del Cavalluccio
at the Cesenatico location and will be coordinated by the goalkeeper coaches of Cesena FC.
The Cesena FC Summer Camp will be divided into two phases
respectively: the first will kick off on Monday
