Aeroitalia is to take over three routes at Comiso on the island of Sicily after Ryanair announced plans to suspend flights to the airport
Aeroitalia will launch domestic service to Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino
The planned operations include four flights per week to Milan
daily service to Rome and three weekly round trips to Forli
Boeing 737-700 aircraft will be used on each of the routes
said Aeroitalia’s entry to the market would “guarantee the mobility of a large slice of Sicilians” and cater for the large tourist flows the destination expects to handle over the peak summer months
Ryanair announced its intention to leave Comiso earlier this month following a spat with SAC
The airline said it intended to hold a press conference on April 20 and 21 to unveil growth plans from Sicily
but SAC “attempted to change the terms” of an agreement on the eve of the conference
the ULCC said it was withdrawing all service from Comiso
OAG Schedules Analyser data shows that Ryanair served seven destinations from the airport
Alongside the planned launch of Aeroitalia’s flights from Comiso
Wizz Air has offered "rescue fares" for passengers affected by Ryanair’s withdrawal
The tactic of launching rescue fares is often used by Ryanair when a competitor exits a market or cancels flights
Wizz said the fares would be available from Catania
the airline’s sole base on Sicily located about 100 km (62 mi.) from Comiso

the annual Peace Ceremony was held at the Comiso Peace Pagoda (Sicily
Italy) by monks and nuns from all over the world of Nipponzan Myohoji
The Temple and the Pagoda (Buddhist stupa) are unique monumental shrines in Italy
The Peace Pagoda is one of the four currently built in Europe
The other locations are Milton Keynes & London in the UK and in Vienna
The Comiso Peace Pagoda was opened in 1998 (this year celebrating the 25th year anniversary) by Rev
who still tends the Temple and Pagoda to this day
Morishita arrived in Italy in the early 80s to support the nonviolent protests against the NATO base in Comiso
At that time the Comiso base was the largest NATO base in Southern Europe with nuclear-armed missiles on-site and drew a great deal of attention from anti-nuclear peace activists and protesters
Today this holy Peace Pagoda place is a haven for many pilgrims from all over the world from many spiritual traditions
At the ceremony were present representatives of local institutions as well as representatives of other religious orders (among them a Catholic priest) and many people from nearby towns
from all over Italy and from all over the world
nuns and volunteers had been working very hard for weeks so that this day could be felt in its deepest essence and to commemorate 25 years of this symbol of peace
Reverend Morishita moved everyone with his speech inspired by Ashoka’s edict on giving up all weapons
abandoned his bloody and ruthless policy of “conquest in all directions,” in favour of
‘the victory of Dharma’ (Dharma Vijaya) – the rule of nonviolence
anyone who wished to share thoughts or say prayers was given the opportunity to participate
the many gifts and offerings that graced the altar (fruits
and beautiful flowers) were handed out by the monks and nuns to all in attendance
The celebration culminated with a lunch offered to all who came specially prepared for the occasion so all could enjoy together
The aim of the Pagoda is to serve as a symbol and meeting place to serve the continued mission of building peace in the world through prayer
In attendance at both Comiso’s celebration and the Vienna celebration this year was a senior monk of the order
Poland from Japan in order to pray for the war raging on Poland’s border in Ukraine
Every day he walked to the Russian embassy in Warsaw
beating his drum and praying for an end to the conflict and for peace all over the world
Reverend Sasamori led a Peace Pilgrimage from the Auschwitz Death Camp in Poland to Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan and vowed to return to Poland to erect a Peace Pagoda and Temple site (like the Comiso holy site)
we will soon see the erection of Europe’s fifth Nipponzan Myohoji Peace Pagoda Site in Poland and also see a reprise of the violence in Ukraine
As the monks and nuns’ sole mission is to pray and work toward Peace
for all practical day-to-day and bureaucratic matters
the order relies on the good hearts and sound sense of the local men and women of peace supporting them
the Committee for the Peace Pagoda* in Italy has been recently established to resolve issues related to the legal legitimacy of the monument and projects supporting the site
such as legally buying the land the Pagoda and temple stand on
build a road to allow free access to monks
devotees and visitors as neighbouring local land owners have recently limited access to the site
The feeling of union with the Eternal is shared by all those who visit this temple “placed beneath the open sky and accessible to the poorest of poor”
Anna Luisa Leonardi and Angela Ricciardi (Italy)

DHARMA TALK FOR THE 2023 EUROPEAN PEACE PAGODA ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
[London Peace Pagoda – 38th anniversary]/ [Milton Keynes Peace Pagoda – 43rd anniversary]/ [Vienna Peace Pagoda – 40th anniversary]/ [Comiso Peace Pagoda – 25th anniversary]
we are once again able to mark the 38-anniversary celebration of the London Peace Pagoda with you
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone joining us here
As a result of the prolonged disruptions due to Covid-19
we have been unable to organise the annual anniversary celebrations since 2019
the annual ceremony is being revived this year
all of you have been working hard to help maintain the Peace Pagoda and build up peace in the world
I would like to say Thank You for all your efforts
the Dhauli Peace Pagoda’s 50th anniversary celebration was held in India attended by many from all over the world
This pagoda was built on Dhauli Giri i Odisha state
the sacred site where King Ashoka in ancient India – following his conversion to Buddhism – abandoned the policy of ‘conquest in all directions’ (Digvijaya) in favour of the victory of Dharma (Dharma Vijaya)- rule by non-violence
the Ukrainian war has gone on for close to a year and a half
and there seems to be no sign of an end to the war in sight
Even if invasion by military force were to bring some stability for the time being
it would only leave a bitter feeling for years to come
making it impossible to establish a true and lasting peace
In order to build a true peace let us pray earnestly and work diligently together for a world peace based on demilitarization and non-violence

The view of earth from space can still tingle
its vulnerable beauty cast against the vast blackness beyond
But orbit also offers a more hard-headed perspective of home
NASA satellites have been measuring the reach of Arctic ice
from the extent of its winter freeze into a contiguous mass
to the low point of its annual summer retreat when warmer air and water melt part of the cap
scientists said NASA’s data showed the smallest summer ice cover ever recorded by satellites
Senior NASA scientist Joey Comiso was among the first observers to warn of an unusual shrinking of the summer ice cap
In an interview with Policy Options editor Bruce Wallace
Comiso describes how that process appears to be accelerating because less ice and blacker open seas result in less solar radiation being reflected back into space
He also warns that the Arctic ice cap’s role in everything from global sea currents to keeping greenhouse gases trapped in the permafrost holds implications for the planet beyond the polar region
Policy Options: What is this data telling us
This year we have the lowest-ever perennial ice cover in the Arctic
It used to be in the order of 7 million square kilometres in the 1980s
In the last decade it has been dropping at a quite high rate
Some scientists had postulated that we would lose perennial ice by the end of this century
and actually it might be a lot earlier than that
PO: Some scientists are now saying we could have ice-free summers in the Arctic within four years
We still have some ice in the core that is very thick and this very thick ice will probably survive for some time
And there have been periods when the winter was relatively cold
This year we actually had quite a cold winter in the latter part
What may have been different for 2012 is that there was a big storm in early August
That separated quite a big chunk of ice — almost 400,000 square kilometres — from the core
The chunk was broken up and drifted to the south where the water is warmer and it became vulnerable to being melted completely
PO: Does that suggest some of the record melt this year was caused by natural causes
But I don’t know that you would consider the storm to be completely natural causes
and there are all these postulates about big storms being caused by warmer water
And water becomes warmer in the Arctic because of what we call conditioning
We have had a large area of open water in the Arctic Basin in summer over the last few years
That large area of open water is basically black
Much of the solar radiation is absorbed by the ice-free ocean and therefore causes a warming of the upper part of the ocean
The storm might have been so strong because of this conditioning
PO: Some people contend that we are looking at all this data in too short a time frame
that we’ve become accustomed in this century to an ice cap of a certain size but that it was small 1,000 years ago and it saw big declines even as recently as 1940
Does the historical record tell us anything different about changes to the ice cap
Comiso: We didn’t have satellite data in 1940
But we have studies that show there was indeed a drop in the Arctic ice cover in 1940
it went down to nearly 10 million square kilometres
the average size was something like 11 million
so there was drop of about a million square kilometres from the previous year
That decline is not what we are observing now
we have a minimum of less than 4 million square kilometres
PO: You’ve described this reinforcing domino effect where less ice equals less reflectivity and therefore more solar absorption
Comiso: What would be needed is some sustained cooling
so the ice gets a chance to get thicker in the winter and is able to survive during the summer
the Arctic warming is three times steeper than the rest of the globe
PO: Are there policy steps we could take that would diminish the rate of decline
that would not require getting a global agreement on reducing carbon emissions that is
Comiso: Are you talking about human steps like geo-engineering
You could try to inject a lot more aerosol into the atmosphere and that would have a cooling effect
But that would be very expensive and sustaining it would be quite expensive
And if all of a sudden we don’t have the money any more
we don’t know the consequences of stopping
The warming might bounce back in an even stronger manner
I would still favour the minimizing the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
PO: Why does a smaller polar ice cap matter
From the perspective of developing new energy sources
this satellite imagery might convey an opportunity rather than a crisis
Comiso: The impact could be bigger than what people realize
and as you get more and more absorption from the sun
that water is going to get warmer and warmer
A warmer ocean means warmer land around it
and the land around the Arctic Ocean is permafrost and glaciers
There are also signs that parts of Greenland will be unstable
One of the concerns is a thawing of the permafrost
The permafrost is storing a very large fraction of methane and other greenhouse gases
and if you release whatever is stored in the permafrost
you would accelerate the warming in a way that we cannot project right now
It also affects the circulation of the ocean
You have currents and there is a general pattern of circulation around the globe
If you change the coverage of ice in the Arctic we probably would alter that pattern
And if you change the circulation pattern of the ocean
which occupies 70 percent of the surface of the earth
So that impact could reverberate around the world
PO: You were one of the first scientists to draw attention to the shrinking Arctic ice cap
Did your projections ever anticipate that you’d be seeing imagery like you released this week
Comiso: When we started looking at the Arctic ice back in the late 1970s
we saw a seasonal cover that melts to about 7 million square kilometres in the summer and expands to 16 million square kilometres in the winter
and we thought this would go on for a long
We didn’t think the ice cover would retreat so much
I published a paper in 2002 analyzing data from 2000 and recognized that the ice cover was declining
I was estimating a trend then for the ice minimum [shrinking] at a rate of nine percent a decade
I thought at the time that was relatively high
But now if you do a similar trend analysis you would be getting something like 17 percent per decade
I make predictions on the future of the Arctic ice based on statistics
But people have compared global models of sea ice with actual data and noted that even when this modelling incorporates the increase in greenhouse gases
the decline they [predict] is significantly less than what we observe from satellite data
The reason may be that our existing models don’t incorporate all of what’s going on in the Arctic
but I don’t think the models incorporate the storm effect
[The storm] happened at the time when the ice was most vulnerable
If the models incorporate other phenomenon
then they might be able to reconstruct what we’re observing from satellites
PO: The beauty of the satellite is that you get to believe your own eyes
And the other thing is that our record is becoming longer and longer
we wouldn’t believe it was a trend at all
it’s becoming more and more believable that something is happening

Il sole siciliano le ha cotto il mio cervello
Has the beating sun created this mirage—part “Robocop,” part Goodwood Revival—or is it real
as in decommissioned cruise-missile launch site real
built by Mussolini for the usual nefarious purposes
then seized in 1943 by the Allies and turned into a commercial airport in the 1950s
NATO set up a cruise missile facility on the south side of what’s now the Comiso Air Base runway and housed 112 missiles there
but in the late 1990s some 5,000 Kosovar people took refuge in the dormant neighborhood still standing
Now trees and vines have taken up light housekeeping as people have moved on
everyday subdivision installations like a school and a post office
since the 2022 Bentley Continental GT leaps from point to point like a frog with a rocket strapped to its ass
This car’s even painted in a sort of amphibian green-gold
It’s a vibrant hue that stands out in relief against the terra-cotta-toned terra firma
among the Medusa heads of aloe and palm trees bursting in full fruit among thin-bladed palms
the Conti GT Speed stands out in sharp relief
It’s stunning in its current iteration and detailed exquisitely
The muscularity barely shows in photos: it evaporates the more formal proportions of the last-generation car
tapers every line to a perfect horizon line
It slims and trims the looks of the stock Continental GT
Speed versions don an exclusive darkened grille and lower bumper grille
Chrome or black underliner draws out those sills and draws forward along the body of the car like an arrowhead
Like Range Rovers and BMWs with similar cues
it’s a bit of overkill that works exquisitely to some (me) and not to others (unwashed heathens
the four-seat grand tourer takes on more sporty cues to distance itself from more plebeian Continentals—cars driven by people who have to fly commercial
The GT Speed wears two-tone leather and Alcantara upholstery in a choice of 15 colors
with diamond-in-diamond quilted leather upholstery
and Speed logos embroidered on the headrests
Piano black trim can be replaced by six other wood veneers
and dark aluminum trim can adorn the center console
If you can’t be pleased by its tightrope balance of glitz and substance
I spent the morning in a GT Speed coupe getting to Comiso with the singular task of hurtling between Fiat Pandas and dump trucks filled with dirt
Sicily’s morning commute sucks like the morning commute everywhere
but at least it’s baked under a cerulean sky
tBentley calls the GT Speed coupe its most dynamically capable car in its 101-year history
the car it believes is the best grand tourer on any road
starting with the familiar 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 that conjures up 650 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque
Mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission and rear-biased all-wheel drive
the powertrain hustles the Conti GT Speed from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds in hardtop form
and takes one-tenth of a second more to do so with the convertible
Both sport a dream-sequence top speed of 208 mph; there’s no way with cluttered and busted Sicilian roads that we’ll see anything above 150 mph or so
The combination of W-12 and 8-speed has depth and distinction up to about 5,000 rpm where horsepower starts to drop off and the torque curve bends more gently
The GT Speed’s quartet of drive modes—Comfort
and Dynamic—give it the range of an EGOT winner
and Sport mode for threading along the thinnest lines on the map
the transmission shifts twice as quickly e as it does in other W-12-powered Continentals
Flip its paddles around and it generates an almost digital beat with exhaust overrun
like the kick drum on a “mastered for iTunes” copy of T-Rex
It’s a passing machine on the order of the quickest electric cars
time-warping the road ahead to enable six-car passes in the very short stretches where solid double lines go briefly broken: Whumpf
At 190.9 inches long, with a 112.2-inch wheelbase, and a curb weight of 5,011 lb, the Conti GT Speed drives with a cross-country skier’s endurance, but it’s by no means lithe. Convertibles weigh 5,388 lb, and that’s before adding in all the bomboloni I’ve had.
It’s stable because this Continental GT wasn’t developed off of other architectures from its parent group, says spokesperson Mike Sayer. It’s rock-solid because it was developed alongside those other cars—including the Panamera—and thus Bentley had a say in key dimensions, like axle-to-dash and track.
Engineers from the British luxury brand threw every chassis and suspension system they could at the Conti GT Speed so the car could live up to that origin story. The GT Speed rides on a standard three-chamber air suspension with adaptive dampers, and also comes standard with all-wheel drive with an electronic limited-slip differential, rear-wheel steering, and 48-volt active anti-roll bars.
The AWD system is tuned with more rear-drive bias for a sportier driving experience. The rear-wheel steering makes the car quicker to turn at lower speeds and more stable at higher speeds. The limited-slip differential puts the power down more effectively when exiting turns, and the active anti-roll bars keep the barrel-chested two-door more level in corners.
The proof of that theory comes after a wake-up espresso in one of Comiso’s disused warehouses. (Caterers, we walk in your grace.) Slewing through decrepit neighborhoods at 11/10ths, I worry a tricycle will push out into the street like some edge-case “self-driving” test, or worse, that some sewer-grade clown will spring out. Also I wonder why Bentley didn’t include a baseball bat for gratuitous swings at all these dead-letter mailboxes. For some of us, high school never ended.
Credit’s due also to the GT Speed’s powerful carbon-ceramic brake rotors with their 10-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers. They save 73 pounds of unsprung weight, and in at least one instance, put the car’s Pirelli 275/35ZR front and 315/30ZR rear tires to near-maximum use, saving the car from wandering trash cans on the road back to the hotel.
2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed at Comiso
The 2022 Conti GT Speed has more power and sharper handling, but Bentley says comfort doesn't suffer. It’s hard to tell, while my back’s being massaged and cooled by its fabulous driver seat and while my ears are being soothed by 2,200 watts of 18-speaker Naim audio sound with active bass that vibrates the seat bottom to the beat of Italian disco.
I skirt looming downpours in a top-down Breeze-tinted convertible with a navy suede cabin. The roof takes just 19 seconds to deploy or stow; it’s lined with enough soundproofing to render said Italian disco listenable. I give a pass to the neck warmer integrated into the heated and cooled seat; I have the sun at my back.
The top, by the way, can be ordered in one of seven colors, including a tweed option. Tweed? In a car that can do this? Weird British flex, but OK, I guess. This is definitely a car for people who wear two watches and think virtue signaling is what a rally co-driver does to earn his keep. It’s ungodly comfortable and that’s all that matters.
Safety’s not given a slip. The GT Speed has automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and traffic-sign recognition that I felt empowered to ignore. It’s a loosely guarded secret here that the posted limits are half what you should be driving.
Is there anything this car doesn’t do well? The answer is no, unless you’re talking about weighing less or costing less. A few hours of driving and both of us, the car and I, are hungry for more. Bomboloni, yes, but driving, too.
If you’re willing to let the Sicilian sun simmer your skull, few skillets can do it like the 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed. Flip the lid, and hear nothing but echoes of the Conti GT’s whuffling W-12, and the occasional slip of grip and skip of tires. Whether you’re cruising a ghostly missile base or just the ghosts of other pasts, the GT Speed’s fast and quick enough to pass through a portal in time. It passes every test in flying color.
Bentley flew me to Sicily and steered me around unheard-of rains so that Motor Authority could bring you this first drive review.

NASA has released a series of shocking satellite images that appear to reveal the devastating impact of climate change and how it is transforming our planet
the series of photographs taken from space show changes from a combination of climate change
This includes shrinking glaciers in New Zealand, snow in the Sahara Desert, Melting ice in Canada and travel reduction in Wuhan, China due to coronavirus restrictions
including before and after shots taken weeks to decades apart
the collection shows the reality of climate change on the Earth
Images of Arctic sea ice captured in 1984 and 2020 show the noticeable change in the extent of the frozen region - showing just how much has melted in 36 years
'At the rate we're observing this decline,' said NASA scientist Joey Comiso
'it's very likely that the Arctic's summer sea ice will completely disappear within this century.'

“At the rate we’re observing this decline,” said NASA scientist Joey Comiso
“it’s very likely that the Arctic’s summer sea ice will completely disappear within this century”
These false-color images show a portion of the Sindh province in southeastern Pakistan before and after flooding from monsoon rains in 2020
One set of photos appear to show Iceland's Ok Glacier completely melted away
wildfires scorching Argentina and a monsoon flooding in Pakistan
Half of the images are taken before an event happened - in some cases up to four decades ago - and half show the same location after a major incident
The image of the left was taken in 1941 and shows the Muir Glacier in Alaska alongside its tributary Riggs Glacier
By the time the 2004 image (right) was taken Riggs had retreated 0.4 miles and both glaciers had thinned considerably
These images taken in 2016 show rare snowfall at the edge of the Sahara Desert - taken with the Landsat 7 satellite
The snow had almost disappeared by the time the right image was taken on December 27
National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) researchers say 2020 saw the second lowest Arctic sea ice extent in the 42 year history of satellite records
It's a double whammy,' said Director of the NSIDC Mark Serreze
when figures were released in September 2020
The record low for Arctic sea ice was in 2012 - the lowest since satellite records began in 1979 - the 2013 minimum was larger
but continued the long-term downward trend of about 12 per cent sea-ice loss per decade since the late 1970s

apparently creating a new island - as seen in the difference between the 2007 (left) and the 2011 (right) pictures
NASA recorded images of rare snow fall at the edge of the Sahara Desert in December 2016
NASA also captured images of human events - showing a dramatic reduction in traffic levels in Wuhan early in 2020 - at the start of the coronavirus pandemic

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the biggest contributors to global warming
After the gas is released into the atmosphere it stays there
making it difficult for heat to escape - and warming up the planet in the process
It is primarily released from burning fossil fuels such as coal
The average monthly concentration of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere
CO2 concentration has fluctuated over the last 800,000 years between 180 to 280ppm
but has been vastly accelerated by pollution caused by humans
The gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) comes from burning fossil fuels
car exhaust emissions and the use of nitrogen-based fertilisers used in agriculture
Although there is far less NO2 in the atmosphere than CO2
it is between 200 and 300 times more effective at trapping heat
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) also primarily comes from fossil fuel burning
but can also be released from car exhausts
oxygen and other chemicals in the atmosphere to cause acid rain
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an indirect greenhouse gas as it reacts with hydroxyl radicals
Hydroxyl radicals reduce the lifetime of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
Particulate matter refers to tiny parts of solids or liquid materials in the air
whereas others cannot be seen by the naked eye
soil and chemicals can be in particulate matter
Particulate matter (or PM) is described in micrometres
The two main ones mentioned in reports and studies are PM10 (less than 10 micrometres) and PM2.5 (less than 2.5 micrometres)
Air pollution comes from burning fossil fuels
Scientists measure the rate of particulates in the air by cubic metre
Particulate matter is sent into the air by a number of processes including burning fossil fuels
Particulates are dangerous because those less than 10 micrometres in diameter can get deep into your lungs
Particulates are found in higher concentrations in urban areas
What sort of health problems can pollution cause
According to the World Health Organization
lung cancer and heart disease can be linked to air pollution
Some of the effects of air pollution on the body are not understood
but pollution may increase inflammation which narrows the arteries leading to heart attacks or strokes
almost one in 10 lung cancer cases in the UK are caused by air pollution
Particulates find their way into the lungs and get lodged there
some chemicals in particulates that make their way into the body can cause cancer
Around seven million people die prematurely because of air pollution every year
Pollution can cause a number of issues including asthma attacks
various cancers and cardiovascular problems
Air pollution can cause problems for asthma sufferers for a number of reasons
Pollutants in traffic fumes can irritate the airways
and particulates can get into your lungs and throat and make these areas inflamed
Women exposed to air pollution before getting pregnant are nearly 20 per cent more likely to have babies with birth defects
Living within 3.1 miles (5km) of a highly-polluted area one month before conceiving makes women more likely to give birth to babies with defects such as cleft palates or lips
For every 0.01mg/m3 increase in fine air particles
Previous research suggests this causes birth defects as a result of women suffering inflammation and 'internal stress'
What is being done to tackle air pollution
is an international agreement to control and limit climate change
It hopes to hold the increase in the global average temperature to below 2°C (3.6ºF) 'and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C (2.7°F)'
The UK government has announced plans to make the country carbon neutral by 2050
They plan to do this by planting more trees and by installing 'carbon capture' technology at the source of the pollution
Some critics are worried that this first option will be used by the government to export its carbon offsetting to other countries
International carbon credits let nations continue emitting carbon while paying for trees to be planted elsewhere
the UK government announced the sale of new petrol and diesel cars would be banned by 2040
MPs on the climate change committee have urged the government to bring the ban forward to 2030
as by then they will have an equivalent range and price
Pictured: air pollution over Paris in 2019
The speedy electrification of Norway's automotive fleet is attributed mainly to generous state subsidies
Electric cars are almost entirely exempt from the heavy taxes imposed on petrol and diesel cars
A VW Golf with a standard combustion engine costs nearly 334,000 kroner (34,500 euros
while its electric cousin the e-Golf costs 326,000 kroner thanks to a lower tax quotient
The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has said there is a 'shocking' lack of Government preparation for the risks to the country from climate change
The committee assessed 33 areas where the risks of climate change had to be addressed – from flood resilience of properties to impacts on farmland and supply chains – and found no real progress in any of them
the level at which countries have pledged to curb temperature rises
which is possible if greenhouse gases are not cut globally
It added that cities need more green spaces to stop the urban 'heat island' effect
and to prevent floods by soaking up heavy rainfall

Philippines – Two alleged leaders of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) were arrested by police and soldiers in Butuan City on Thursday
The Philippine Army announced the arrest on Saturday
Colonel Maurito Licudine, commander of the Philippine Army’s 402nd Infantry Brigade, identified the suspects as Melissa Comiso, alias Meli, allegedly the acting finance officer and education/propaganda staffer of Komisyong Mindanao, and Nore Torregosa, alias Johnny, reportedly the liaison and intel staffer of the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee
Licudine said the arrest was a result of “months of thorough case buildup” by the military and police
Comiso and Torregosa were arrested while authorities were serving a search warrant at the Stanley Apartment in Barangay 14
The Rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP)
saying that Comiso is not an NPA leader but the head of RMP Northern Mindanao’s Literacy and Numeracy (LitNum) Program
“Melissa has been a longtime member of RMP. As a Lumad herself, she has been the head of RMP-NMR LitNum Program and has managed a number of these schools. She has tirelessly sought to bring education to Lumad communities and work with her fellow Lumad and other advocates to achieve this goal,” the RMP said in a statement
she has been repeatedly tagged by state forces as an “NPA supporter.”
The group also said Torregosa is Comiso’s fellow Lumad teacher
But Licudine said the arrest of Comiso and Torregosa was a result of the information gathered from a community where Comiso and her group reportedly spearheaded organization and financial collection activities to support NPA rebels in the mountains
The RMP is demanding the immediate release of Comiso and Torregosa
whom the group said are both detained at the police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Office in Butuan City

The plan was announced three years ago, during the Obama administration, when Pentagon officials declared: "In front of Russian aggression, the United States is considering the deployment of ground-based missiles in Europe" [1]
In the 2018 fiscal year the Congress of the United States authorized the financing of "a program of research and development of a ground-based mobile Cruise missile"
It is a nuclear missile with an intermediate range (between 500 and 5500 km)
similar to the 112 Cruise nuclear missiles deployed by the US in Comiso in the 1980s
along with the Pershing 2 ballistic missiles deployed by the US in Germany and the Soviet SS-20 deployed in the USSR
by the Treaty on Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF)
It prohibits the deployment of ground-based missiles with a range between 500 and 5500 km
Washington now accuses Moscow of deploying missiles of this category and declares that
"if Russia continues to violate the INF Treaty
the United States will no longer be bound by this treaty"
ie the United States will be free to deploy ground-based intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe
a decisive fact is ignored: the Russian missiles (assuming their range is intermediate) are deployed in a defensive position in the Russian territory
while the US intermediate-range missiles would be deployed in an offensive position in Europe close to the Russian territory
It is as if Russia deployed nuclear missiles pointed at the United States in Mexico
the deployment of such missiles in Europe is increasingly likely
Ukraine tested a ground-based intermediate-range missile
which was certainly produced with US assistance
one of the four on a world scale (2 in the US
1 in Australia and 1 in Sicily) of the satellite communications system that connects all US forces
a satellite reception and transmission station for the US «anti-missile shield»
which is about to become operational in Sigonella
It is one of five worldwide (the others are in the United States
is used not only for anti-missile defense but also for attack operations
launched from forward-deployed bases such as those in Italy
In the “Nuclear Posture Review 2018" the Pentagon declares: "The United States commit nuclear weapons forward-deployed to Europe
These forces provide an essential political and military link between Euro-pe and North America"
By linking us to their strategy not only militarily but politically
the United States increasingly transform our country into a forward-deployed base of their nuclear weapons pointed at Russia
therefore into a forward-deployed target at which Russian nuclear weapons are pointed
