in Calabria which finds in the Shrine of Saint Francis the final destination of a religious pilgrimage but also of a nature trek that passes through splendid locations among woods and small villages immersed in tranquillity The Way of St Francis of Paola is a nature-religious route dedicated to the figure of the Calabrian saint Exactly like the famous Camino de Santiago the "Calabrian Santiago" is organised in stages and issues participants with credentials and testimonials at the end of the route There are three possible variants: the Via del Giovane (49 km in 3 stages); the Via dell'Eremita (62.7 km in 3 stages) and the Via dei Monasteri (135 km in 6 stages) The first route links two important localities related to the history of St Francis: San Marco Argentano and Paola The first locality is linked to the childhood of Francis who was born with a serious eye deformity and by his parents' vow wore the Franciscan habit for a year until he was disbanded in San Marco Argentano San Marco Argentano is located along the Valle del Crati Places to see along the way include the Norman Tower the Cathedral of San Nicola with its crypt and the Matina Abbey with its chapter house dating from between the 11th and 13th centuries Also of interest are the Diocesan Museum and the Clarisse Monastery Among the practicable itineraries in the footsteps of St Francis of Paola retraces the stages of Francis' hermit vocation The itinerary evokes a fundamental stage of the Franciscan Way in Calabria when the saint travelled from Paola to Paterno Calabro as the founder of the Order in the region Having arrived in this small community in the Serre Cosentine in 1444 St Francis personally dedicated himself to building the church Here the saint stayed for a long time and from here he left on 2 February 1483 for France cloister and the Grotto of Penance are part of the entire complex The third option of the Saint Francis Walk in Calabria is the Via dei Monasteri which unites in a single itinerary the towns of Paterno Calabro The foundation of the monasteries of Spezzano and Corigliano takes us to the height of Brother Francis' spiritual maturity when his concern for his homeland drove him to create solid communities of brothers united by the same sobriety as the founder Passing through the hills and valleys of the Serre Cosentine the itinerary enters the forests of the Sila National Park and it descends gently to the expanses of olive groves vineyards and citrus trees of the Gulf of Corigliano visits to the Castle and the Franciscan Sanctuary rich in precious works of art and frescoes from the end of the 15th century you can admire the precious Codex Purpureus Rossanensis all the roads of the Saint Francis Walk lead to Paola Here stands the birthplace of the saint and the majestic Shrine of San Francesco di Paola The large square houses the façade of the modern basilica and the original church which contains a number of relics and the striking first chapel The cloister of the convent is decorated with a cycle of frescoes narrating the life of the saint a pleasant path through the greenery leads to the tiny refuge of the saint in his younger years referring to the miracles of the Fornace and the Fonte della Cucchiarella whose waters are attributed the same healing properties as those of Lourdes Starting from the true story of Franca Viola, the first young Sicilian woman to refuse the so-called ‘reparatory marriage’ after having suffered violence, the show evokes the struggles for dignity and freedom. Oliva, the protagonist, tells us her story: from her adolescence lived in a social context that imposed rules and limits on women, to the moment when she took the courageous decision to say ‘no’ to submission, challenging norms and prejudices. 21 January 2025 - Metropol Theatre Cinema, Corigliano Calabro (CS)22 January 2025 - Apollo Theatre Cinema, Crotone (KR) Cinema Teatro Metropol, leave Italy ‘ghost ship’ Italy-bound ‘ghost ship’ migrants paid up to $8,000 each to traffickers Italy (AFP) ― Italian authorities disembarked 360 cold and hungry migrants Saturday from a ship left adrift by its crew off the country’s coast with some having paid up to $8,000 to traffickers for the perilous journey It was the latest in a wave of such incidents involving migrants crossing the Mediterranean to flee conflict and poverty in the Middle East and Africa and attempting to reach Europe by sea The migrants have been preyed upon by people smugglers who have recently resorted to a new tactic of abandoning “ghost ships” full of desperate travellers off European coasts Women and children were among hundreds of migrants left stranded aboard the Ezadeen which docked in the Italian port of Corigliano Calabro around 11 pm Friday after a delicate operation by the Italian navy to take control of the ageing vessel Its arrival was one in a series of maritime dramas that Italy has grappled with in recent days and which have brought some 2,000 rescued migrants to Italian soil Italian prefect Gianfranco Tomao told reporters migrants can now pay traffickers between $4,000 and $8,000 for passage to Europe Passengers aboard the Ezadeen had paid amounts in that range and the ship was later left to drift in stormy seas off southern Italy without fuel or electricity Some confusion remained about whether the vessel’s crew jumped ship simply peeled off masks they’d worn during the crossing then melted in among migrant passengers to be rescued as naval ships neared 54 women and 74 children aboard are thought to be Syrians fleeing war in their homeland Six coastguard officers were lowered from a helicopter onto the deck of the Sierra Leone-flagged vessel on Friday to set up a tow for the 40 kilometers to the Italian coast The nearly 50-year-old Ezadeen was spotted by a coastguard plane 80 miles offshore shortly after nightfall Thursday A female migrant raised the alarm over the ship’s radio telling authorities the crew had abandoned the vessel coastguard spokesman Captain Filippo Marini said which was in the area on a mission with the European Union’s border agency Frontex but rough weather conditions made boarding the ship impossible five Tyr crew members were winched onto the ship by helicopter to care for passengers until the Italian coastguard arrived “The migrants aboard were visibly distressed but overall in good medical condition water and basic medical assistance,” a Frontex statement said Friday The incident marked the third sea rescue operation Italy’s navy has been forced to mount in a week The first arose after a deadly fire broke out on the Norman Atlantic ferry Sunday between Greece and Italy Italian prosecutors fear the Norman Atlantic which was towed to the port of Brindisi Friday could contain the bodies of illegal immigrants and unregistered passengers yet to be discovered Bari prosecutor Giuseppe Volpe said almost 500 people may have been aboard ― far above the 474 officially on the manifest ― prompting fears the current death toll of 13 may rise once the ferry is fully searched the magistrate leading the investigative portion of Volpe’s case told reporters Saturday that his first search of the Norman Atlantic had turned up no additional victims when he first entered the ferry to recover its “black box” data recorder Friday Cardinali noted important sections of the vessel remain inaccessible due to safety concerns and that it would take time for a complete sweep of the ship to determine whether any other victims were trapped in it the Italian navy stopped its first crewless “ghost” ship of the week which had been left drifting with around 770 migrants on board after having been abandoned by the people smugglers who had sailed it from Turkey The Moldovan-registered Blue Sky M got within five miles of running aground before six navy officers were lowered on to the ship by helicopter and succeeded in bringing it under control Some of the migrants were treated for hypothermia and injuries More than 170,000 people have been rescued at sea by Italy in the last 14 months Lee Jae-myung It’s not unusual for the Libyan navy to shoot at rescue boats. Last September the Libyan navy admitted to staging an attack that saw the Bourbon Argos raked with gunfire “We in Europe like to think that the whole world wants to do nothing more than live in Europe “A significant number of people we see on Aquarius never wanted to go to there.” https://www.instagram.com/clementinoiena/ The summer of 2024 promises to be full of musical excitement in Calabria. If you break it, fix itPeter McKennaThe EU and its member state governments must act to bring relief in Libya and change in Eritrea and Ethiopia in order to improve living standards and combat the oppression that leads to people deciding to risk their lives in order to seek freedom Until the EU exercises the effective power it should deploy to secure such advances the conditions that impel desperate people to risk their lives and use all their resources to enrich ruthless traffickers will continue Those who survive will endure abject misery Across the EU we will be witnesses to horror when we could if leaders and member states have the political will Next month’s European commission action plan will doubtlessly be well intentioned but if it is given the necessary breadth and strength by the combined weight of governments it could be effective too.Glenys KinnockLabour so it must be doubted whether next month’s EU plan for “introducing a fairer system of distributing refugees around the EU” will be anything more than foam on the wave many more people will drown and “humanity and compassion” can be invoked only to be cast overboard by EU member states In 2011 this country bombed Libya continuously for seven months One of many inconvenient truths was that the militias we bombed into power routinely lynched sub-Saharan Africans Many guest workers – once welcomed by the Gaddafi regime – continue to flee a murderous persecution that we directly facilitated To axe support for search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean because it only encourages them It is a truism that British imperialism has a short memory – but this is ridiculous Over the past week we have seen another huge wave of illegal migration across the Mediterranean This is a totally untenable situation and we need a solution but we need look no further than what the Australians have done They implemented the policy of turning the boats around – or making sure that no one embarking on the journey was allowed to reach the Australian mainland It does seem suspicious to me that such a solution has not really been discussed within the EU We cannot rescue a whole continent and bring them here The only question now is when will the bureaucrats in Brussels bite the bullet and implement this.Jim LittworthWinchester There were a number of politicians who campaigned to end the Mare Nostrum search and rescue operation in the Mediterranean This was on the inhuman basis that as more of those men women and children seeking to escape oppression drowned it would deter others from attempting the crossing These politicians are unfit for public office They should issue a public apology and withdraw from the ballot in the current election.Ron KippsDartford Sign up for our daily Newsletter and stay up to date with all the latest news You are receiving this pop-up because this is the first time you are visiting our site You are using software which is blocking our advertisements (adblocker) we are relying on revenues from our banners So please disable your adblocker and reload the page to continue using this site. Thanks "The citrus fruit campaign is in full swing however the produce is lacking and the weather is out of control Fruits are not as ripe as they should be this time of year even the most highly pigmented are finding it difficult to develop their color consumers are indeed interested in clementines but this does not in turn push the consumption of oranges," explains Primo Forcina a company located in Fondi (LT) and founded by his father Antonio in the 1980s.  Forcina Antonio boasts a wide range of products and handles over 15 thousand tons every year The company specializes in the processing and commercialization of: apricots Annurca apples sold under La Timida brand have also been recently introduced.  purchase manager of the company he founded in 1987 "We are still processing good volumes of Clementines from Calabria (Corigliano Calabro) and Puglia then the late Hernandina cultivar became available as of January 15th we always have excellent Italian produce available." It had been left to drift in stormy seas off southern Italy without fuel or electricity.  In the dark rescuers had first thought that it could be holding up to 450 people but after docking, the authorities revised the count to 360.  Most of the 232 men, 54 women and 74 children aboard are thought to be Syrians fleeing the war in their homeland. They were all said to be in good health.  Six coastguard officers were lowered from a helicopter onto the deck of the Sierra Leone-flagged vessel on Friday to set up a tow for the 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the Italian coast. The rescue is the latest in a series of maritime operations Italy has mounted in recent days as it struggles with a record wave of migrants making the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean. On Wednesday, the navy had already faced drama after it stopped another crewless "ghost" ship left drifting with nearly 800 migrants on board. Italian authorities told reporters passengers on the Ezadeen had each paid $4,000-8,000 (3,300-6,600 euros) for the journey to Europe.  The authorities also provided new details of the migrants' itinerary. The passengers said they were flown from Lebanon to Turkey, where they set sail on December 31 aboard the ship that normally carries cattle. According to the migrants, the crew members  masked their faces throughout the journey, fueling suspicions they may not actually have abandoned ship but mixed in among the migrants while awaiting rescue. - 'We are alone' - The nearly 50-year-old Ezadeen was spotted by a coastguard plane 80 miles offshore shortly after nightfall Thursday. A female refugee raised the alarm over the ship's radio, telling the coastguard that the crew had abandoned the vessel, coastguard spokesman Captain Filippo Marini said. "We are alone, there is no one, help us!" Marini quoted her as saying. An Icelandic patrol boat Tyr, which was in the area on a mission with the European Union's border agency Frontex, came to the rescue but rough weather conditions made boarding the ship impossible. After the vessel ran out of fuel, five Tyr crew members were winched onto the ship by helicopter to care for passengers until the Italian coastguard arrived to take control. "The migrants aboard were visibly distressed but overall in good medical condition. They have been provided with food, water and basic medical assistance," a Frontex statement said Friday. The incident marked the third sea rescue operation Italy's navy has been forced to mount in a week. The first arose with after a deadly fire broke out on the Norman Atlantic ferry Sunday between Greece and Italy. Italian prosecutors fear the Norman Atlantic, which has been towed to the port of Brindisi, could contain the bodies of illegal immigrants and unregistered passengers yet to be discovered. Bari prosecutor Giuseppe Volpe said almost 500 people may have been aboard -- far above the 474 officially on the manifest -- prompting fears the current death toll of 13 may rise once the ferry is fully searched. Three days after the ferry fire, a ship carrying nearly 770 migrants was found drifting Wednesday towards the rocks off Italy's southeastern shore. The Blue Sky M freighter was on autopilot, after having been abandoned by the people smugglers who had sailed it from Turkey.  The appearance of two drifting migrant boats in under a week has raised concerns that smugglers have started abandoning large boatloads of people in European waters as a new tactic to maximize profits from their ruthless trade. The Moldovan-registered Blue Sky M got within five miles of running aground before six navy officers were lowered on to the ship by helicopter and succeeded in bringing it under control. The passengers, who were said to be mainly Syrians and Kurds, included some 60 children and two pregnant women, one of whom gave birth on board, according to the Italian Red Cross. Some of the migrants were treated for hypothermia and injuries, including broken limbs. More than 170,000 people have been rescued at sea by Italy in the last 14 months, and hundreds, possibly thousands, have perished trying to make the crossing. Increasingly, the traffickers appear to be using bigger vessels than the converted fishing boats and inflatable dinghies they previously favored. The International Organization for Migration estimated Friday that people smugglers grossed over $1 million (830,000 euros) on just one of the abandoned ships alone. A European Commission spokesman said Friday that fighting the smuggling of migrants would "continue to be a priority" of the EU in 2015. Read our Privacy notice A “ghost ship” carrying hundreds of Syrian refugees including pregnant women and children has been towed safely to Italy after being abandoned by its crew. The Ezadeen was the second cargo ship within days to be left on course to crash into the Italian coast, pointing to a worrying new trend by human traffickers. Italy’s coastguard said the ship arrived at the port of Corigliano Calabro shortly before 11pm local time on Friday, where passengers were met by medical staff from the Red Cross. Commander Francesco Perrotti told the BBC all the migrants on board were from Syria and said they were being taken by bus to other parts of Italy. The 360 passengers were in relatively good physical condition after their three-day ordeal, he said. The rescue of the Ezadeen follows a similar operation to save almost 800 migrants aboard another abandoned ship, the Blue Sky M, on Wednesday. Sailing under the flag of Sierra Leone, it had lost power in rough seas off the south-east coast of Italy after being set on auto-pilot on its way from Turkey. One of the migrants raised the alarm using a radio on board, telling coastguards: “We're without crew, we're heading toward the Italian coast and we have no-one to steer.” Ezadeen is registered as a livestock vessel but cattle would not be left to cross high seas in the winter with no crew. The so-called “ghost ships” are a worrying new trend as human traffickers exploit desperate refugees bidding for a new life in Europe, endangering their lives in the expectation that European coastguard agencies will take them to shore. The UN’s refugee agency, the UNHCR, warned that similar incidents had been happening for months but only came to global attention this week. “We are seeing this new trend. It’s apparent there have been other such incidents – maybe four or five in the past two months,” said UNHCR spokesman William Spindler. “But only when the Blue Sky M incident occurred this week, which involved nearly 1,000 people, did it capture everyone’s attention.” Mr Spindler said it showed that human traffickers were changing tactics. “They’re using bigger boats and different routes to smuggle people. “In the past they have come from Libya in dinghies and boats, but that route seems to have been closed by Frontex [the EU’s border agency].” Admiral Giovanni Pettorino of the Italian Coast Guard said that by charging hundreds of desperate refugees thousands of dollars at a time, gangs in North Africa and the Middle East were still able to make big profits by writing off ageing ships in the process of smuggling human beings. Last month the UNHCR described the Mediterranean crossing from the Middle East and Africa to Europe as “the most lethal route in the world” after a record 3,419 migrants lost their lives in 2014 crossing the sea. Instead of attempting Sicily, take the line that snakes round the bottom of Italy’s boot, all the way from Reggio Calabria on the western toe (linked by trains to Milan) to Taranto on the eastern heel. That’s about 500km of single-track railway. As long as you keep the sparkling sea to your right and thirsty vegetation to your left, you can’t go wrong. The ship carried 360 migrants, mainly from Syria. They had been locked in the ship’s hold. No crew was aboard. According to the Coast Guard’s news release Ezadeen’s control equipment had been destroyed The captives had broken their way out of the ship’s hold One of them used the maritime radio on board and told the Italian coastguard: “We are without crew We are heading toward the Italian Coast and we have no one to steer.” At the time Týr was the only patrol vessel on duty in the area Týr reached the ship four hours after the emergency signal It brought the vessel to the Italian port of Corigliano Calabro According to Frontex, the migrants were “visibly distressed but overall in good medical condition”. They were immediately provided with food, water and basic medical assistance. According to the BBC passengers were in good condition and were being transferred to immigration centres and foster homes around Italy The drifting ship is the second such incident in a week: earlier last week migrants were rescued from another abandoned vessel “When we approached the ship late last night,” Halldór said on Friday, “we were going to ask them to slow down so that we could board the ship, but those who responded didn’t know how to handle the equipment and couldn’t slow the ship down.” According to Captain Halldór Lennet, interviewed by Vísir, the ship’s controls were already broken The Coast Guard’s news release says that the control equipment had been damaged “So it was absolutely impossible to move between the two vessels the weather being what it was and the ship sailing at full speed So we asked the Italian Coast Guard to bring a helicopter but shortly later the ship’s engine died All that was left to do at that point was to tow the ship Halldór said that the people aboard were frightened and exhausted The Icelandic officers were later joined by Italian officers who then manned the vessel while it was towed by Týr Most, if not all, of the ship’s passengers, which include men, women and children, come from Syria. According to RÚV, some are from Kurdistan. Interviewed by The Guardian Save the Children’s spokesperson in Italy said that they had been without food and drink for five days Italian officers say that “the smugglers wore hoods and locked the migrants in the ship’s hold before apparently abandoning ship on a lifeboat.” Each passenger had paid around US $ 5,000 for the passage, says the paper, which it says is three times the “going rate” for even more dangerous crossings from North Africa. The BBC quotes Luigi Liguori who says the migrants paid between $4,000 and $8,000 for the voyage the traffickers have made around or above $3 million for the voyage The Guardian’s John Hooper writes that even if “perhaps an odd epithet to use” the passengers “looked distinctly middle-class A couple of the women standing with their husbands on the ship might have been shopping in the nearest mall A pale-faced young woman in a knitted woolly hat with earmuffs and drawstrings would not have looked out of place in a London or Paris antiques market.” Police chief Liguori makes a similar note: “We’ve noticed a change in the make-up of the Syrian refugees on board They wear better clothes and are also better organised and they are less desperate than the migrants we normally see.” According to Frontex cargo vessels such as Ezadeen have been deployed by “people smugglers” since summer 2014 The agency has registered fifteen incidents involving cargo ships since August that year Most sources agree that this is a new development and that migrants have until now mostly attempted to cross the Mediterranean on smaller boats the Icelandic Coast Guard’s operations co-ordinator told Vísir that he had noticed the developments since November: “Until now this wave of cargo vessels started.” He says that the ships are usually in very bad shape and thus of little monetary value: “There is no value in the ships themselves they are ready for scrap or disposal.” The BBC qutoes Izabella Cooper saying that the the route taken on these vessels is longer than the route normally taken by smaller boats Since 2000, some 22,000 migrants have died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean the number of deaths rose from around 1% to almost 2% of all those who attempt the journey nearly 3,500 migrants died trying to cross the Mediterranean The UNHCR has described it as the “world’s deadliest migrant route” Frontex is the Schengen Area’s external border patrol agency. November 2014, it launched the operation “Triton,” to replace Italy’s coast guard in patrolling migrant routes across the Mediterranean the operation is less extensive than the Italian coast guard’s prior operation Mare Nostrum Týr is one of five patrol vessels involved With a monthly budget of EUR 2,9 million the agency will coordinate the deployment of three open sea patrol vessels and one helicopter in the Central Mediterranean While all of Iceland’s fishing vessels stayed in port during the holidays, at the end of December, Týr was the only Icelandic vessel that remained at sea. Týr, employed for operations in the Mediterranean, at least partly due to the Coast Guard’s financial strains, has since December taken part in four rescue operations of this sort, rescuing, in total The organisation holds that the cost of current restrictions on migration to Europe “in human lives and misery” is “incalculable and is being paid by some of the world’s most vulnerable people” Tourist Sexually Harassed In Blue Lagoon Tourist Held Hostage On May Day Culture Night Killer Sentenced To Prison Starbucks To Open In Reykjavík Soon Iceland At A Crossroads An Ode to Flateyri From Army Brats To Luxury Flats Police Officers Spied On Citizens For Iceland’s Richest Man Around 450 migrants have arrived safely in the Italian port of Corigliano after the cargo ship they were on was abandoned People traffickers left the vessel unmanned in rough seas Children and pregnant women were among the migrants onboard - most of them are believed to be from Syria The Italian Coastguard says it's the second incident of its kind in just a few days The coastguard commander in Corigliano Calabro said all the migrants on board were from Syria He said they were being taken by bus to other parts of Italy He described the migrants' physical condition as relatively good after their three-day ordeal Developed by Square1 More than 3,000 dead wild birds have been discovered in southern Italy and four men have been arrested for illegal hunting. The discovery was made in a joint operation by the Carabinieri and Environmental Police in Calabria. "A gang of poachers have been arrested in possession of a truly shocking haul of dead birds," CABS, the Munich-based committee against bird hunting said.  It said the four men massacred the wild birds in Corigliano Calabro - the very south of mainland Italy and were stopped whilst transferring the birds to customers in Northern Italy. Their vehicle was found packed with 2,795 greenfinches, goldfinch, crossbills, skylarks, robins, various species of bunting and titmice, as well as woodcock and teal. In a subsequent house search, police found another 330 dead birds, 600 rounds of ammunition and illegal hunting rifles. To view comments, please register for free or log in to your account.
