Students enrolled in Art 3205 Special Topics in Graphic Design and Art 3009 Graphic Design Theory and Practice gained design experience and made valuable new connections in the field
leads students in designing and setting the cover of a portfolio at Tipoteca in Cornuda
The three-week trip took students to eight cities in Germany
“The original idea came 15 years ago when I was teaching in Chicago,” said Dan Elliott
I was able to make connections to make the trip possible.”
Elliott made an initial trip in 2022 where he met with host institutions and scouted out potential lodging and transportation options for a possible study abroad class
He said the knowledge gained from this trip helped him create a proposal to offer the study abroad opportunity
Along with expanding their knowledge of graphic design
students learned to navigate all eight cities by public transit and had time to explore each place
Student projects were often based on locations that the group visited
A project at Tipoteca Italiana was based on T.S
“Time present and time past are both perhaps present in time future.” As part of the project
students designed and letterpress printed broadsides
one connected to the past and another the present before a group print based on the future brought the prints together
Additional projects included printing a calendar based on research of Berlin typography and designing a poster in Basel based on different types of handwriting
students were able to learn from Erik Spiekermann
a typeface designer from Germany who has created numerous fonts and designed multiple commercial typefaces
“The ability to learn from people like Erik Spiekermann and see how one of the most famous and successful graphic designers in history is approachable and not outside of their grasp changes their perspective and goals as designers,” said Elliott
Elliott hopes that students take away the importance of networking as a result of their experience abroad
“I had students last year and this year ask how I was able to set the program up with so many successful designers
and how they know me by my first name and give hugs when we enter the studio,” he said
when you network to give back to the design community good things eventually come about.”
Based on the unknown legend called "La Cornuda de Tlacotalpan"
The project departs from a reinvention of this local history through the imagination of their community
"Times have changed and the story of 'La Cornuda de Tlacotalpan' has been disappearing
People say that when you don't believe in something
Many people said that La Cornuda is a mysterious being who lives in the depths of the Papaloapan River in Veracruz Mexico
In its attempt to survive the forgetfulness of modern times
and entering into Tlacotalpan´s town dimension
While La Cornuda walks around invisible to the eyes of the community
magically photography reveals its new life
The central idea of the project on the legend of 'La Cornuda de Tlacotalpan' was to re-imagine the story in the face of its possible disappearance: involving the community of Tlacotalpan in Mexico and its memory
to re-invent the story through a collective
* 'La Cornuda de Tlacotalpan' is part of 'La memoria es un pantano' (Memory is a swamp)
a collection of visual works and research on myths
and re-interpreting these narratives in a changing contemporary world
trying to open a space for experimental visions
The project "Memory is a swamp" is a visual experimental researches based on locals stories
The construction of the mask was made with organic elements coming from the margin of the river
I did a research based on drawings and video interviews in the village community
In this serie I try to generate a new narrative between these universes of imagination
The legend of the Cornuda was born from the heart of the Papaloapan river

The final project of the first part for the construction of a school complex in the municipality of Cornuda is the subject of a call for tender of the Province of Treviso
aimed at the executive design and subsequent construction of the school building and the adjoining gym
At present the area is almost totally free from the pre-existing buildings but there are deposited heaps of rubble suitable for reuse in the future works of construction of the complex. The new school complex of Cornuda will also host a Coni approved gymnasium up to the regional volleyball series and an auditorium for 200 people
These facilities will be open to community use in order to transform the complex into a true civic center.Aim of the project was the deepening of the following aspects:
The project of the first part of the intervention comes from a reflection on the functioning of the entire compartment following the insertion of both school complexes. The plant is articulated with an L shape with the sides formed by jagged profiles; starting from the level of the parking lot
which will be raised during the enlargement phase also thanks to the reuse of material on site
it develops to reach the level of the ground floor by overcoming the difference in level with a series of ramps
the longest of which form the profile of the gym towards the court.A high porch welcomes users at the entrance from the parking lot and leads them to the various entrances of the complex that are in sequence: entrance to the public gym
must have an independent operation but at the same time must ensure the necessary interrelationships: gymnasium and auditorium are primarily service spaces to the school and therefore must be guaranteed in direct connection with the school spaces
The gymnasium is immediately accessible from the parking lot and outdoor areas; there is a clear separation between the flow of the public and the athletes
The playing area has dimensional characteristics such as to accommodate a regulation volleyball court; the coverage is formed by twin wooden beams that leave a useful height under beam of 7.20 m
The flooring of the playing area of the gym sports wooden parquet
is occupied by retractable telescopic grandstands in order to have the maximum flexibility of use of this space as well and can accommodate 150 spectators. The locker rooms of the gym are sized for the purposes of Coni approval for regional series and have independent access; they consist of two locker rooms for athletes that provide for the use of two volleyball teams and two locker rooms for instructors / referees with 2 users each
and an infirmary with private bathroom. The gym public also has facilities and a reserved first aid area
Access between the school and the gym is through the locker rooms

A short statement from the band on Tuesday (Aug
Heathman helped form the Supersuckers alongside fellow guitarist Dan "Thunder" Bolton
drummer Dan "Dancing Eagle" Siegal and frontman Eddie Spaghetti (Edward Daly) in Tucson
An early-'90s record deal with Sub Pop exposed the punk-minded group to grunge audiences
Heathman performed on two albums (1992's The Smoke of Hell and 1994's La Mano Cornuda) before taking a brief leave of absence in 1995
He returned a year later to contribute to four more studio efforts from the band

When the Supersuckers emerged in 1992 after releasing its first album through Seattle independent label Sub Pop
some music pundits filed the act under grunge since the group was based in the cappuccino capital
But it never fit in with the then-burgeoning sonic movement
The band burst onto the scene wearing cowboy hats and playing a hard-driving hybrid of alternative rock and garage punk
It won over alt-rock fans with its incendiary live shows
which featured revved-up versions of its rollicking tunes
“I think we came out doing things differently,” says vocalist-bassist Eddie Spaghetti
who will perform Wednesday at the North Star Bar
It was evident the band was a potent force and soon landed theater gigs
Visceral tunes such as “Creepy Jackalope Eye” and “Seventeen Poles” excited punks and alterna-rockers
“It was a great time for us,” Spaghetti says
The band kept up the raucous punk with 1995’s “The Sacrilicious Sounds of the Supersuckers.”
Even with all of the momentum the group was riding
it took a chance and went the other way with 1997’s surprising and satisfying “Must’ve Been High.”
The band went country and even featured the iconic Willie Nelson
The album remains the most daring and ambitious project the Supersuckers has crafted to date
“Why make the same album over and over again?” Spaghetti says
it’s not about the style of music — it’s the music
You can forget about genres — it’s about great songs.”
And then there was the opportunity to work with Nelson
“That was something I’ll never forget,” the bassist says
The Supersuckers also has collaborated with Seattle pal Eddie Vedder
“We enjoy it when we have the chance to work with somebody who will come in,” Spaghetti says
“We welcome things that can add to our sound.”
“Metal” Marty Chandler and drummer Christopher “Chango” Von Streicher
still packs a mighty punch 20 years after it recorded its initial album
“We still have a lot of fun with it,” says Spaghetti
That’s one thing with us that hasn’t changed a bit since the early days.”
The Supersuckers appears Wednesday at the North Star Bar
