Stefano Carera (left), who is from Italy, and Eirini Giannakopoulou, who is from Greece, are the founders of SCEG Architetti
they’ve designed spaces that always reflect balance between functionality and emotion
a project has to be like a poem: saying the most with as few words as possible
This essential concept does not translate into a specific aesthetic but rather
it is like the relationship between technique and imagination
Case in point: Stefano and Eirini’s tiny holiday home located in a small village in the Alta Val di Susa
“It is a very lively area in every season.” The 269 square feet of outdoor space overlooking the woods is what made the couple fall in love with this place
“We have a five-year-old kid who really has fun playing outside!”
The town of Claviere is 5,774 feet above sea level
on the Italian side of the border with France
The two architects purchased the flat two years ago and, since then, have renovated everything inside
The biggest challenge consisted of “interpreting the traditional image of a chalet in the mountains
usually all made of wood.” Instead of sticking to that particular ideal
323-square-foot refuge with an open space comprised of the kitchen and dining/living area
Every corner was optimized to allow six people to sleep in only 323 square feet. The green Odile lamp is by Lumen Center Italia
which pays tribute to the Italian design master who founded the Memphis Group in Milan in 1980
“The most important tone is the red veneer of Ettore Sottsass,” Eirini says
and in this project we introduced a rich palette.”
One of the surprising decorative elements in this tiny apartment is the Kartell Gnome by Philippe Starck—this particular model is called Napoleon
Inspired by fairy tales and the surrounding alpine scenery
the architect couple fully leaned into designing this space for themselves
Eirini loves the local picture of the two children in the woods that sits next to the bench in the dining area
“It could be the ‘cover’ of this visual story,” she says
In this welcoming apartment where every inch is maximized
blue and green hues—as an ode to the landscape—contrast with the red throughout
Some decorative elements such as the Frog poster by Enzo Mari on the wall and the Kartell Gnome by Philippe Starck create a surprising and joyful atmosphere filled with fantasy
Eirini and Stefano worked on giving a sense of flow and feeling of depth through the materials and motifs
“We used to go almost every weekend,” Eirini and Stefano say
Use multifunctional pieces of furniture to optimize a small space. Eirini and Stefano opted for a sofa bed in the tiny living area to make sure they can invite friends and family to stay with them for a weekend
Play with different motifs and strong hues to create some depth
and tiles combined with bright colors on the walls and on some furnishings help to add a sense of movement and visual dynamism to a space
Eirini and Stefano picked red as the main theme
They used it in several ways in the different spaces to make the apartment feel cohesive

Greg Corsico put on some Harry Potter-style specs and helped his young son get into a white tattered mummy outfit
Then they set out for a night of trick-or-treating in a 17-story building in the Upper West Side of Manhattan
"Time to balance out Sandy's tricks," a sign posted in the building's elevator read
It had barely been two days since the 13-foot storm surges and 80 mph winds of Hurricane Sandy rocked New York
home and businesses and racking up billions of dollars in damage
But a large swath of residents in New York City
has already begun to get back into their regular routines
"New Yorkers really do have to push forward in spite of everything going on," Corsico
You don't want to minimize what's taking place
but you also try to maintain some type of stability."
I don't live far from Corsico and the other families I tagged along with Wednesday night as their children trick-or-treated Manhattan-style
tromping up and down the stairs and knocking on every door with a piece of tape signifying that a candy-giver waited inside
Those outside the region who've been following Sandy's most extreme and terrifying moments from their TV screens and Twitter feeds might not realize that for some parts of the city
the storm's effects weren't as hard-hitting
My lights flickered several times throughout the night
The trees outside lashed against my window
the wind howled frighteningly loud and tree trunks ripped apart in the park around the corner
played a board game and caught a few movies on Netflix
After selling out of bottled water and flashlights Sunday
most shops and eateries shut their doors Monday and Tuesday
but several local bodega and pharmacy owners never did
I could barely walk along Broadway around 100th Street without bumping into an eager trick-or-treater in a Batman mask or college student dressed as a banana
But brave the gridlock to get below 34th Street
nearly 230,000 Con Edison customers in Manhattan and 480,000 citywide still had no electricity
with Con Edison setting up dry and wet ice distribution stands in the five boroughs
Southern California Edison is even sending a mobile command center and ground convoy to help
People have flocked to places with Wi-Fi hot spots and power outlets like Starbucks and Chase Bank to charge phones and check email
parking garages and businesses on the southern tip of Manhattan flooded with water
A giant crane still dangles over midtown along a 90-story under-construction apartment tower
Some of my friends in flood zones who had to evacuate still can't go home
I visited flooded coastal areas of the Bronx where high-tide waves lapped against park benches
a 99-cent store's owner family was sleeping in their store because their home had been flooded and a giant uprooted tree narrowly missed two apartment buildings
At least 34 deaths in New York City have been attributed to Hurricane Sandy
including two people hit by a tree while walking a dog
an off-duty cop who drowned in his basement after rescuing his family
and two toddlers swept away from their mother on a flooded street
Mayor Michael Bloomberg canceled the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade
which typically draws more than a million costumed paraders and spectators
for the first time in its 39th year history
though the mayor said he hoped it could be rescheduled for sometime next week
Bloomberg announced the New York Marathon is set to go on as planned Sunday
The subway system resumed limited service Thursday
Kennedy airports were once again bustling as delayed passengers board their rescheduled flights
a stranded passenger got an unexpected perk: her first American Halloween
The preteen and her family had been stranded when Sandy thwarted their flight home to the Dominican Republic
made sure the girl joined her two own daughters as they trick-or-treated with Corsico and other families in the Upper West Side
It wasn't how I expected to spend my first New York City Halloween
but I enjoyed seeing the young girl smile shyly as she counted her first Halloween treats
when a reporter at a press conference asked Bloomberg if trick-or-treating was still on
he said that was "between you and your neighbors."
It was encouraging to see that neighbors around me who had the ability to carry on the tradition safely didn't let Sandy stop them

who had previously worked on one of the development’s townhouses
Lafferty was brought onto the project early enough to collaborate with Ferreira Architects on fundamental decisions of layout
Among the signature gestures she brought to the four-bedroom house were her frisky sense of color and irreverent brand of modernism
“the layout of the project was very much about creating an exciting and unexpected journey that gives people options for how they circulate through it.”
The decorator’s enthusiastic use of color also governs how the house is experienced
there are two main common spaces in the residence: One is the formal living room in the old section
the other a brighter lounge in the new part
The former’s walls are painted a dark “dirty teal,” applied over rough sand and cement render
which can be closed off from the kitchen with a large oak barn door
Lafferty designed a lime-green velvet sofa to fit the room’s ample dimensions
“We wanted it to be strong yet whimsical,” she says
“Some people were skeptical about a big piece in such an assertive color
Lafferty also brought her love of tile to the project
for bathrooms and kitchens only,” she says
“But I like it in living and dining spaces and even in bedrooms.” In fact
she’s used it in various forms all over the house
from solid and decorative Moroccan tiles made in the traditional way to contemporary geometrics that recall the groundbreaking ceramics of Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti
She covered an entire corner of the kitchen in dark blue zellige tiles
which she also used on a cantilevered bench and moisture-resistant timber table that extends through accordion windows onto a patio
maximizing the relationship between indoors and out
Another of Lafferty’s personal obsessions is lighting
“The scale of most of the light fittings is bold and playful,” she reports
“but they’re quite refined in themselves.” A case in point: the Edizioni Design fixtures
hanging like giant hoop earrings over the dining table
are both enormous—3 feet in diameter—and delicate
The ultimate shock-star in this light galaxy
is a fantastical Maison Dada pendant—a 5 ½-foot-tall
bright-scarlet gobsmacker—suspended above a rosy-pink custom banquette in the barrel-vault reading nook
The nook itself summarizes a lot of the project’s design strategies
and modernizes the space: the solid color not only contrasts with the complex tonality of the surrounding walls but—thanks to the hue’s distinctly 1970s vibe—also fast-forwards the antique brick- and stonework into the new millennium
Lafferty covered the entire arched end-wall of the barrel-vault space with mirror
creating an infinity effect that makes the nook seem endless
“We wanted to showcase the arches as much as possible,” she says
As thoroughly appealing as the Coach House looks
Lafferty is most gratified by the way it feels
“It’s the nicest space I’ve ever done,” she says
“I think I probably put a bit of my heart into it

is now supplying sustainable heat energy to meet the needs of the district heating network around its facility in Corsico
created in partnership with power company Atecc
is reducing the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere by more than 3,000 tonnes a year within the region
and providing a sustainable supply of energy for the local populace
previously known in the region as Vidrala Italia
to allow the residual heat from Encirc Italy’s operations to be used to power the local energy grid instead of fossil fuels. The Encirc Italy-led project
was supported by technology partner Renovis Energy
supplying the equipment needed while providing ongoing engineering and installation support
The scheme is the first energy supply agreement in the Vidrala group’s history
with the district heating network now able to use 100% of the heat energy created by Encirc Italy throughout winter and 30% of it in the summer. To enable the project
invested in building a new electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and a heat recovery system at the glass plant
as well as a continuous mode monitoring system This ensured the optimum level of energy can be shared with the network throughout the year
said: “It’s vital that industrial organisations take note and ensure there are no missed opportunities when it comes to their own operations’ carbon footprints
made possible through our partnership with Atecc and Renovis
shows how local manufacturers can have a positive and long-lasting impact on the communities they serve
“We believe this will be the first of several energy supply agreements for the Vidrala Group as we continue on our decarbonisation journey
forward-thinking projects like this one are key to creating a sustainable future.”

preserving traces of the past in an old factory in turin, the refurbished sempla offices, contrast elements of degradation with a new identity. a constant but delicate dialogue is created between the remnant’s of the industrial building and the information technology company’s forward way of thinking. designed by italian architects DAP studio
the project also marks transformations occurring throughout the city
the layout of the office is based on informal meetings points and pathways that facilitate social exchange
rather than the design of the work station or typical chair and desk format
structured in a way that enables both ‘private’ areas
as well as freer more ‘public’ areas
which can respond to the particular needs of a team
the meeting areas are strategically located so that people can maintain working
as the disturbance between teams is reduced
integrated within the open space are freely placed volumes within the perimeter of the factory

carefully navigated pathways were created to foster social interaction
their different hierarchies forming a type of labyrinth to encourage a sense of discovery with each new encounter
the dimensions of these circulation areas were separated into principal and secondary routes

Darren KennedySat 29 Mar 2025 at 15:00Colour has an undeniable ability to shape our mood and influence how we experience a space
despite our willingness to embrace colour in our wardrobes
many of us hesitate when it comes to our homes
So how should someone afraid of using colour in their home approach it
Introducing colour doesn’t have to be daunting says interior designer Róisín Lafferty — it’s all about knowing where to start
“The main thing to remember when venturing into colour is to focus on the atmosphere and mood you want to create,” says Lafferty
take a moment to consider how you’ll use the space and
it’s much easier to narrow down the right colour choices.”
She makes an interesting point — colour is deeply personal
yet people often second-guess their instincts when decorating
“I see people being expressive and playful in how they dress
But the two are closely linked,” she notes
once you’ve identified a colour you’re drawn to
Lafferty stresses the importance of sampling — and not just with tiny paint swatches
“The single most important thing is to get big samples — think 60cm x 60cm — on loose boards
Move them around the space throughout the day to see how the colour reacts to natural and artificial light.” This
If you’re worried about a bold colour feeling overwhelming
Lafferty’s advice is surprisingly counterintuitive: wrap the colour across all surfaces
enveloping shade.” As for finding the perfect hue
“Avoid sugary brights and instead look for colours with a rich
These create a sense of balance and ensure longevity in your palette.”
There’s no such thing as too much colour — only colour that hasn’t been applied thoughtfully
With a little confidence and the right approach
anyone can transform their home into a space that feels vibrant
Róisín Lafferty will be at the Fleetwood Interior Design Hub at the PTSB Ideal Home Show on April 11
The Ideal Home Show runs at the RDS Simmonscourt until April 13

Although, I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen examples of people getting it wrong many a time before. Not so the case with this heritage gem in Dublin, recently transformed by Irish interior design practice Kingston Lafferty Design (KLD) into a rather spectacular modern residence.
KLD were engaged early on in the project, working alongside Ferreira Architects on fundamental decisions from the materials to the layout.
Their involvement extended beyond the interior architecture of the existing building, incorporating a new contemporary extension, exterior terraces and the garden.
“The new design needed to combine and juxtapose the old and new buildings as one interesting and exciting multi-level, unique space,” explains KLD founder Roisin Lafferty.
The existing coach house was brimming with character, charm and original detail, and KLD were keen for the new extension to complement, and contrast the older structure all at once.
“We set about deliberately creating interesting spaces, nooks and crannies with the minimal and streamlined extension design,” Lafferty says.
The four-bedroom house focuses on the layout first and foremost, achieving a sense of seamlessness that maximises the flow between spaces, providing an engaging visual conversation between light, colour and materials throughout the house.
Former Fitzroy brothel turned into an extraordinary home
Huh? Why this house has two unusual 'rooms' made out of nets
The overall aesthetic is difficult to pinpoint – there is a certain irreverence evident in every room, from the 1980s-inspired built-in pink banquette seating to the formal living room exuding a very Milanese kind of rock-n-roll attitude, while the indoor/outdoor cantilevered bar, wrapped in navy zellige tiles, feels like a nod to contemporary Moroccan style.
Lafferty’s playful approach to colour and material choices paint the interior with a distinct and irreverent sense of elegance. One that feels serious yet doesn’t take itself too seriously.
KLD lined the stone archways and portals between the different spaces in polished plaster, framing views and elevating the simple ritual of passing from one room to another into an event. The material palette fuses the original industrial and raw features with highly sophisticated polished marble, walnut and brass.
In the kitchen, the old mill’s preserved stone barrel vaults meet the impressive three-metre-high ceilings. Instead of walls, KLD employed elements such as an island bench in Nero Marquina marble, and steel frame doors with custom ribbed glass – their shapes echoing the vaulted ceilings. These smart interventions help divide the large open area into specific zones, eliminating the need to separate them with partitions.
Furniture and furnishing choices were carefully considered, too. “To soften the steel, marble and polished plaster elements, we opted for the sensual curves of classic mid-century furniture pieces such as Eero Saarinen’s tulip table as well as playful and sculptural lighting with the bright red Maison Dada ceiling lamps in the sitting nook. Also, there are the large scale of the Edizioni Design circular pendants hanging above the dining table,” says Lafferty.
Overall, Bolton Coach House is a study in balance and contrast between the rustic and the refined, the old and the new, the masculine and the feminine. By putting the human element at the heart of their design peppered with unexpected touches, KLD created a home where everyday life feels like an experience.
