Joseph Cosenza started as an educator but after shifting his career path he had a hand in purchasing more than $55 billion in commercial properties for the Inland Real Estate Group
director and vice chairman of Oak Brook-based Inland Real Estate Group of Companies

Cosenza earned a bachelor’s degree at Northeastern Illinois University and a master’s degree at Northern Illinois University
and was an assistant principal and teacher in Wheeling from 1968-72
While at Northeastern he became friends with the late Daniel Goodwin
and together with fellow schoolteachers Baum and Robert Parks
Their company became one of the nation’s largest commercial real estate and finance groups
A licensed real estate broker and head of acquisitions for Inland
Cosenza oversaw and consulted or negotiated the purchase of more than $55 billion of commercial real estate
and the resiliency of the Inland employees
Inland is one of those great American success stories,” Tony Chereso
Among his awards and recognitions were induction into the Chicago Association of REALTORS Hall of Fame
and lifetime achievement awards from the Illinois Real Estate Journals and CRE Connect industry publications
Cosenza also was active in banking and finance
He served as past board chair of the American National Bank of DuPage
and part owner of that bank as well as Burbank State Bank
He also served on the board of Continental Bank of Oakbrook Terrace
Cosenza was a past chair and a director of Inland Bank & Trust
and a director on the board of Inland Bancorp
“Joe lived life without any limits,” Chereso said
“Not only did he approach his personal life that way
but he approached his professional life that way
and it contributed here to Inland’s success.”
Chereso said Cosenza transformed the alternative real estate marketplace
we use words like ‘remarkable leader’ or ‘pioneer’ when they pass
but those terms were used throughout his career and were recognized in all his accomplishments,” Chereso said

Joseph Cosenza — one of a group of Chicago schoolteachers whose investment club grew into one of the nation’s largest owners
and managers of commercial real estate — passed away on Christmas Day at the age of 81
Cosenza taught third grade in the LaGrange School District and served as an assistant principal in the Wheeling School District in the 1960s and 1970s. With fellow teachers Dan Goodwin, Robert Baum, and Robert Parks, Cosenza co-founded the Oak Brook-based Inland Real Estate Group of Companies
which have owned and managed hundreds of millions of square feet of various commercial property types in 49 states
Cosenza was Inland’s director and vice chairman and led the company’s retail real estate business
“We’ve always respected one another and one another’s ideas
especially the 480,000 investors who have invested with us over the years,” said Cosenza in a speech delivered at a Chicago real estate event in 2018
“My business partners and I were able to give jobs to approximately 2,000 people over the past 50 years,” he added
“That’s one of the greatest accomplishments I’ve ever had.”
currently Inland’s chairman and general counsel
lauded Cosenza as a legendary dealmaker in the commercial real estate industry
and humor that Inlanders will always remember.”
Cosenza piloted Inland’s spacious booths at the ICSC Las Vegas and New York shows with the brightest smile and bow ties on the exhibit floor
Chain Store Age’s interviews with him on show days were blunt on business
but always concluded with updates on the current state of his enduring passion —classic car collecting
“Joe was an unwavering source of inspiration for us all,” said Inland CEO and president Tony Chereso
transformed the alternative real estate marketplace.”
A funeral service will be held for Cosenza on the Friday of Jan

a former city man jailed for 16 years on a later-vacated armed burglary conviction
has been trying to collect on the $8 million judgment since shortly after it was issued
Wednesday’s hearing represented what his lawyers wrote in court documents might be the “only way” he receives compensation on the judgment
as a complicated turn of events has frustrated his efforts to collect
The hearing centered on whether the federal judge who heard the case in Worcester
erred in dismissing the City of Worcester as a defendant in the case prior to trial
While the federal civil jury ruled Cosenza had been wrongfully convicted based on fabricated and suppressed evidence
Hillman ruled prior to trial that legal standards only allowed the two officers
Cosenza’s lawyers appealed that ruling Wednesday
arguing the city should be held liable as a defendant during a second trial because it did not have proper policies in place governing the issues at play in the case
on Wednesday and in hundreds of pages of briefings in the Appeals Court
argued over whether the city bore liability
with the city arguing Hillman’s original ruling was correct
A three-justice panel of the U.S. Appeals Court tersely questioned the lawyers Wednesday in a hearing that, adhering to that court’s practice, lasted only about half an hour, official audio shows
during a highly technical argument in which they cut off the lawyers multiple times
asked for clarification on a number of the arguments and contentions in the case
Their ruling will be pivotal to the case as a result of a string of legal issues surrounding the judgment that have prevented Cosenza from collecting from the officers
the city's lack of liability made the prospect of collecting large sums from two police officers difficult
Cities are typically allowed to indemnify officers on court judgments at up to $1 million per officer
the city in this case argued that a $30,000 award for punitive damages prevented it from doing so under state law
A civil rights lawyer the T&G consulted opined the decision by Cosenza’s out-of-state lawyers to seek punitive damages was ill-advised
but also one that lawyers for the officers
might have considered drawing their attention to
A lawyer for Hazelhurst and Doherty has alleged to the T&G that his clients were not properly advised in the case
allegations a lawyer for their lawyers denied
in order to avoid efforts to garnish their wages and attach their properties
It was unclear from Wednesday’s hearing whether Cosenza has filed a malpractice suit
did not consent to an interview for this story
Court papers indicate the two sides’ arguments largely boil down to a disagreement over whether Worcester’s policies at the time of Cosenza’s 2000 conviction were deficient enough to meet a series of complicated legal standards
Cosenza’s lawyers argued that evidence in the record showed the city had woefully deficient policies in 2000 — including a complete lack of written policies on witness identification and interviews — that met the legal standard needed to hold it liable
while not contesting a lack of written policies in several pertinent policy areas
argued that Hillman correctly ruled Cosenza had not met the high legal bar needed to prove the city bore responsibility
In court papers and in arguments Wednesday
the city did not dispute that Hazelhurst and Doherty had committed misconduct
it argued it was “undisputed that the City had some trainings and policies in place and that the Officers did not comply with them.”
The city wrote that Cosenza “has simply worked backwards with the benefit of hindsight and relied solely on the improper actions of the Officers who investigated him to attempt to hold the City vicariously liable for the Officers’ actions.”
writing in court briefs that there are genuine questions over what policies the city did or did not have that have bearing on the question of the city’s liability
The lawyers argued the city never produced sufficient evidence that officers were properly trained on the procedures implicated in the case
should have known its policies were deficient
“A jury could conclude based on the evidence … that Worcester had no policies whatsoever,” Cosenza's lawyers argued
the lack of guidance created an atmosphere conducive to police misconduct

What are the origins of the St Joseph's Fair in Cosenza? Originating at the behest of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in 1234, the original fair was held in autumn, in the Rivocati district, near the Shrine of Mary Magdalene, to which it was dedicated. Over time, changing to St Joseph's Fair and being linked to Father's Day, the fair became one of the most popular commercial events in the city.

A fun part of working in the radio business is that sometimes cool people will come in to visit the studios and that is exactly what happened the other day with Charles Barkley
I mean how neat is it that on any given day
we could run into a true sports and entertainment legend like Charles Barkley?
Charles Barkley came into the Beasley Media Group Philly clutter and was guest hosting The Mike Missanelli Show on our sister station
I had to head down the hall to say hello and hang for a bit
but I couldn’t do it alone — I took Gina Cosenza with me as well
Gina does amazing work for our digital team here at MGK
it turned out that Gina had never met Sir Charles before
so it was kind of cool that I got to introduce her to basketball royalty
but I have known him for over 25 years — I think that may be longer than Gina’s actually been alive
In my time getting to know Charles Barkley
it is safe to say that he is without a doubt one of the nicest athletes you’ll ever meet
I remember one time we were together at Bridget Fox’s on South Street back in 2011
and he ended up paying for everyone’s meal at the restaurant
if anyone asks him for a picture or autograph
and when he was on The Mike Missanelli Show that day
he talked about how he donates over $1 million dollars a year to charitable causes like wounded warriors
He does all that and doesn’t even make a big deal about it
“I’ll do this until I keel over,” when he was talking about donating
and the world is a better place with him in it.
Last night, February 5, 2024, the Philadelphia 76ers went head-to-head with the Dallas Mavericks
The Sixers were down four regular starters, including Joel Embiid
He is out for a displaced flap of the meniscus in the left knee
He will move forward with a procedure on that knee that will have him out for a significant amount of time
told me she was going to the game with her family
and just outside the studio I broadcast from every day
and Gina helps out a lot with all things digital and social media
Gina sent me all of her photos from her amazing night
She said it fulfilled her dad's childhood dream
She and her dad had a blast being that close to the players
They were close enough to hear trash talk clearly
Here are my and Gina's photos from the night:
I snapped this picture of Kyrie Irving during the game
He came and sat on the bench after the game tipped off
She was shocked when he walked over and sat so close
You can spot Patrick Beverley in the photo as well
I snapped this picture of Gina and her dad
They popped over to sit next to her as the game was ending
Kate Scott was walking out to start the television broadcast as I went over to talk to Gina at her seat
I got this great picture of their smiling faces
I snapped a photo of Luka Dončić during the game
The Mavericks pulled out the win with help from this guy right here
Let's discover together the unseen face of the provincial capital, which from the BoCs Art project to the signature of archistar Santiago Calatrava boasts several works that have left their mark
the dedicated space for Cosenza's contemporary art par excellence is the BoCs Art Museum
housed in the rooms of the Monumental Complex of San Domenico
It is a permanent exhibition of the works resulting from a multi-year series of artistic residencies held at the BoCs Art
the little wooden houses (boxes) on the riverfront for artists of international renown and origin who have come to Cosenza over the years
The space of the BoCs Museum offers the opportunity to admire the works created during 14 residency sessions by some 230 artists who have donated a substantial collection to the city of Cosenza
The languages of contemporary art in Cosenza are declined in heterogeneous ways: from painting to sculpture
from installations to performances and open-air museums that narrate our time
To discover how ancient meets contemporary in the city
simply visit the Multimedia Museum of Villa Rendano and the permanent installation "Cosentia Itinera"
which in 7 multimedia rooms traces the history of Cosenza through myths
A fascinating storytelling supported by the use of digital technologies
Another must-see stop on an urban trek through contemporary Cosenza is the monumental Calatrava Bridge
Designed by international archistar Santiago Calatrava
this 103-metre-long steel and concrete bridge supported by a 104-metre-high steel antenna connects the two banks of the river Crati
The inclined antenna recalls the shape of a giant harp
a true urban landmark recognisable from a great distance
The walk in the sign of contemporary art in Cosenza inevitably passes through Corso Mazzini. Here, in the centre of the pedestrian shopping area, there are numerous contemporary sculptures from the MAB - Museo all'Aperto Bilotti
Born in 2006 from a donation by Carlo Bilotti to the city of Cosenza
the open-air museum is a succession of sculptures from the 20th century to the present day
tracing the work of some of the greatest artists of international contemporary art: Sacha Sosno's Bronzes
Giorgio de Chirico's Hector and Andromache
four Paracarri and the Bifrontale by Pietro Consagra and Mimmo Rotella's Wolf of the Sila
it is possible to access the underground of the square itself to visit another original exhibition site
Another immersive and multisensory space that
through digital and experiential solutions
makes it possible to visualise historical-artistic materials related to the city and enjoy the most important virtual temporary exhibitions that tour the world and Italy
In the historic centre, the dedicated space for Cosenza's contemporary art par excellence is the BoCs Art Museum, housed in the rooms of the Monumental Complex of San Domenico

The investigations are also continuing to evaluate the safety of the birthing point and understand "how it was possible that a couple of people without qualifications entered
"No connections emerge between the arrested perpetrators and the family" of little Sofia
This was stated by the head of the Cosenza Flying Squad Gabriel Presti in relation to yesterday's kidnapping of a one-day-old newborn from a clinic in Cosenza
The investigation is also continuing to evaluate the security of the birthing center and understand "how it was possible for a couple of people without qualifications to enter
explained that the Mobile Squad and Upgsp personnel intervened yesterday evening at the “Sacro Cuore” clinic in Cosenza
after the report of the kidnapping of a newborn
the latter presumably disguised as a health worker who
with the excuse of having to ensure health care for the newborn
had entered the room where she was hospitalized with her mother and after taking her
The woman was helped by a black man with whom she left on board a gray car
After having analyzed at length the video surveillance images of the health facility and other nearby public establishments
and having simultaneously collected investigative information
it was possible to identify the possible perpetrators of the kidnapping
namely a couple residing in the nearby town of Castrolibero (CS)
The men immediately sent to the site actually tracked down little Sofia in the same place of residence as the two kidnappers
a 52-year-old Italian woman and a 41-year-old Nigerian citizen legally resident in Italy
The two were still wearing the same clothes they had worn during the kidnapping
Having simulated a pregnancy with their relatives
upon arrival the officers found themselves in the middle of the celebrations for the birth
while little Sofia was brought back to the "Sacro Cuore" clinic in the arms of her parents and subsequently accompanied to the local hospital in order to ascertain her good health
“A mother and father who died and were reborn yesterday.” He wrote it on social media Valeria Chiappetta
the mother of the newborn baby kidnapped yesterday from a clinic in Cosenza and then found by the police
posting a photo of the little girl with her little brother
“I would like to respond to everyone individually but I can’t
This is our family that was crumbling into a thousand pieces last night
but the happy ending is that Sofia is fine
A mother and father who died and rose again yesterday.”
"Our heartfelt thanks to the investigators of the Cosenza Police Headquarters' Flying Squad for having found and brought back to her parents the newborn baby who was kidnapped in the hospital
A round of applause to our men and women in uniform for their extraordinary teamwork and research." The Prime Minister wrote on social media
which concludes: “A hug to mom and dad and best wishes for a good life to little Sofia!”

Among the weekends in Calabria that pleasantly combine nature and spirituality
the itinerary on the trail of St Francis of Paola
is one of the most important destinations for religious tourism in Calabria
which finds in the Shrine of Saint Francis the final destination of a religious pilgrimage
but also of a nature trek that passes through splendid locations
among woods and small villages immersed in tranquillity
The Way of St Francis of Paola is a nature-religious route
dedicated to the figure of the Calabrian saint
Exactly like the famous Camino de Santiago
the "Calabrian Santiago" is organised in stages and issues participants with credentials and testimonials at the end of the route
There are three possible variants: the Via del Giovane (49 km in 3 stages); the Via dell'Eremita (62.7 km in 3 stages) and the Via dei Monasteri (135 km in 6 stages)
The first route links two important localities related to the history of St Francis: San Marco Argentano and Paola
The first locality is linked to the childhood of Francis
who was born with a serious eye deformity and by his parents' vow wore the Franciscan habit for a year
until he was disbanded in San Marco Argentano
San Marco Argentano is located along the Valle del Crati
Places to see along the way include the Norman Tower
the Cathedral of San Nicola with its crypt and the Matina Abbey
with its chapter house dating from between the 11th and 13th centuries
Also of interest are the Diocesan Museum and the Clarisse Monastery
Among the practicable itineraries in the footsteps of St Francis of Paola
retraces the stages of Francis' hermit vocation
The itinerary evokes a fundamental stage of the Franciscan Way in Calabria
when the saint travelled from Paola to Paterno Calabro as the founder of the Order in the region
Having arrived in this small community in the Serre Cosentine in 1444
St Francis personally dedicated himself to building the church
Here the saint stayed for a long time and from here he left on 2 February 1483 for France
cloister and the Grotto of Penance are part of the entire complex
The third option of the Saint Francis Walk in Calabria is the Via dei Monasteri
which unites in a single itinerary the towns of Paterno Calabro
The foundation of the monasteries of Spezzano and Corigliano takes us to the height of Brother Francis' spiritual maturity
when his concern for his homeland drove him to create solid communities of brothers
united by the same sobriety as the founder
Passing through the hills and valleys of the Serre Cosentine
the itinerary enters the forests of the Sila National Park and it descends gently to the expanses of olive groves
vineyards and citrus trees of the Gulf of Corigliano
visits to the Castle and the Franciscan Sanctuary
rich in precious works of art and frescoes from the end of the 15th century
you can admire the precious Codex Purpureus Rossanensis
all the roads of the Saint Francis Walk lead to Paola
Here stands the birthplace of the saint and the majestic Shrine of San Francesco di Paola
The large square houses the façade of the modern basilica and the original church
which contains a number of relics and the striking first chapel
The cloister of the convent is decorated with a cycle of frescoes narrating the life of the saint
a pleasant path through the greenery leads to the tiny refuge of the saint in his younger years
referring to the miracles of the Fornace and the Fonte della Cucchiarella
whose waters are attributed the same healing properties as those of Lourdes

Teatro Rendano e statua Bernardino Telesio
Among the great names that Calabria has consigned to the history of Western thought is that of Bernardino Telesio
a Cosenza-born philosopher from the 16th century
His studies on nature as a world unto itself and on the preservation of the spirit through virtue marked a very important step in modern Western philosophy. Giordano Bruno, Descartes, Francis Bacon and Tommaso Campanella drew inspiration from his doctrine and his main work
"De rerum natura iuxta propria principia" (1565)
Bernardino, a Cosenza-born philosopher, worked in his hometown at the Accademia Cosentina, known as the "Accademia Telesiana", enriching the city of Cosenza with the legacy of his writings and a series of historical and monumental places linked to his presence
Not just for ‘insiders’ and philosophy enthusiasts
the tour in the footsteps of Bernardino Telesio is within everyone's reach and allows you to immerse yourself in the 16th-century atmosphere of the city
discovering places in the historic centre (Cosenza Vecchia) with eternal charm.
Cosenza and the history of philosophy and theology in Calabria are one and the same
Born in 1509 into a family of intellectuals and humanists
Bernardino Telesio was first educated under the example of his uncle Antonio
and then continued his studies in the main Italian cities (Milan
Here Bernardino Telesio begins to develop his critique of Aristotelian philosophy: the supreme good of man does not consist in the exercise of reason
directing it towards pleasure and not pain
The symbol of his work in the city is still the Accademia Cosentina
the second in the Kingdom of Naples (1511)
This prestigious academy was founded by the Calabrese Aulo Giano Parrasio
under whose rectorate Bernardino was trained
and then took over as director upon the master's death (1534)
when the same institute changed its name from Accademia Parrasiana to Accademia Telesiana
The institute collects original works and manuscripts of universal value: 53 editions of incunabula (first Gutenberg printed books)

What are the places of Bernardino Telesio in Cosenza besides the Accademia Cosentina
It is enough to take a walk in the historic centre of Cosenza Vecchia to discover them all
starting from the house where the philosopher was born
in Piazza Berardi 1 (which cannot be visited)
passing through the twentieth-century building that today houses the academy and library
in neoclassical style characterised by the typical pediment with the wisdom symbol on a gold background
depicts the philosopher in a meditative attitude
The bronze statue rests on a granite plinth
itself decorated with bronze bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the philosopher's life
including the explanation of his doctrine and his arrest during the Sack of Rome in 1527.

Also on Corso Telesio are numerous historic shops and establishments
such as the Caffè Telesio of the same name and the Gran Caffè Renzelli
which has dedicated its special "Torta Telesio" to Bernardino Telesio

Continuing the tour in the footsteps of Bernardino Telesio in Cosenza, an obligatory stop is the Monumental Complex of San Domenico.
Situated at the confluence of the two rivers
the building of the former Dominican convent is the meeting place of Bernardino Telesio and Tommaso Campanella
the other great Calabrian philosopher hosted within these very walls (1588) during his stay in Cosenza
The 15th-century building belonged to the Sanseverino family and the façade still has elements of the original construction, such as the rose window, the entrance arch and the two Renaissance chapels. Today, it houses the BoCs Art Museum
a contemporary art museum with a collection of works from artistic residencies in the city
