Antonio Leonelli (Antonio da Crevalcore) (Italian, born by 1443–died by 1525). Still Life with Grapes and a Bird
Promised Gift of Stanley David Moss (L.2016.26)
«Renaissance artists and patrons were obsessed with Pliny's Natural History
which contained detailed descriptions of great works of art from antiquity
The fact that most of those works no longer existed added allure to their imagined perfection
Among the most intriguing was a picture of grapes by the famous Zeuxis (fifth century B.C.) that was "so successfully represented that birds flew up to it." Executed as part of a competition
Zeuxis found himself beaten by his archrival Parrhasius
who painted a curtain so realistically that Zeuxis reached out to pull it back
but Parrhasius had fooled an artist at his own game!»
There can be no question that Antonio da Crevalcore (1443–1525) had this story in mind when he painted Still Life with Grapes and a Bird
considered to be one of the earliest extant independent still lifes in European painting
Crevalcore was compared to Zeuxis by a contemporary poet
who counted among his patrons the fascinating Isabella d'Este (1474–1539)
a passionate collector of Greek and Roman antiquities and an avid reader of classical texts
In 1506 she received a picture described as "fruit done by Antonio da Crevalcore
who among us is most singular in this kind of work

Factory produces components for internal combustion engines
Marelli has paused plans to close its Crevalcore plant in Italy
saying it had asked an adviser to seek potential buyers for the site
The supplier announced last month its intention to close the facility which produces components for internal combustion engines (ICEs)
Marelli said the facility had become “unsustainable” due to the switch to EVs
The company said it had agreed “to find a solution that will ensure the industrial and employment continuity of the Crevalcore site” after a meeting with Italy’s industry and labour ministries
trade unions and a representative for the Emilia Romagna region
Reuters noted Marelli did not withdraw its plan to end operations but the decision has given parties involved more time to avoid closure

The closure was expected to happen around the end of this year
“We wanted a complete and full withdrawal of the closure procedure,” Gianluca Ficco of the UILM union said
adding the temporary suspension allows unions “to start a discussion”
Talks were scheduled to continue on 8 November

to build the youth center, the existing structure has been completely reimagined by the architect to create a more open
the program of the finished building is split over 3 storys and covers a total floor area of 9149 ft2 (850 m2)
the new scheme accommodates up to 200 people and includes 8 classrooms
the center also provides a place for sport activities
with a large outdoor court and a games room complete with table tennis and table soccer.
the new intervention is designed to reflect the local architectural history and utilizes traditional building materials and techniques
this simple palette of materials has also been selected to reduce construction costs while minimizing the need for future maintenance.
the structure makes use of the chimney effect

cooling the interior during the summer months and improving its sustainability
has been redesigned into a single pitch facing south
in an effort to double the surface area of solar gain and to streamline energy consumption
‘the building’ – explains architect iosa ghini – ‘is a hub for young people; designing a structure of simple quality while paying special attention to its aesthetics was of utmost importance
as our goal was to convey a sense of internal and external beauty and manifest it as an educational medium.’ inaugurated in september
the center will also be home to a charitable organization called ‘la bussola’
which deals with integration and social issues within the municipal district

Chris Lawless at the 2018 Tour Down Under (Sunada)
The 22-year-old takes advantage of a split in the bunch on stage three of the Italian race
Team Sky's Chris Lawless took his first professional win on Saturday at the Settimana Coppi e Bartali
sprinting ahead of Paolo Toto (Sangemini-MG.Kvis) and Lorenzo Rota (Bardiani-CSF) from a reduced field
with a pan flat circuit to Crevalcore in store for the riders
A split in the field towards the finish of the race saw a reduced bunch move ahead
and Lawless was able to despatch the other fast men in that group to bring home the victory
His team-mate Diego Rosa maintains the overall lead of the race with a final time trial on Sunday
having finished second to Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) on the uphill finish of stage two
Italian Rosa and Mollema were able to finish safely in the front group with Rosa maintaining the overall lead by seven seconds
Earlier in the stage a seven man breakaway group
containing Remy Di Gregorio (Delko Marseille)
Marco Coledan and Jacopo Mosca (Wilier Triestina - Selle Italia)
got up the road and took a maximum advantage of 2-30
Team Sky did much of the pace making to keep the breakers in touch
reeling them in with around 35km to go before the main field split
The 2018 Settimana Coppi e Bartali will conclude on Sunday with a short and flat 12.5km time trial from Fiorano Modenese to Montegibbio
stage three: Crevalcore - Crevalcore (171k)
6 Mauro Finetto (Ita) Delko Marseille Provence KTM
8 Alex Turrin (Ita) Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia

The number of people killed when a passenger train and a freight train crashed head-on in fog-shrouded countryside in Italy rose to 16 yesterday when three more bodies were found
More than 50 people were injured in Friday's crash
the country's worst rail accident in nearly 25 years
The body of a man was extracted from the wreckage early yesterday afternoon
Rescue workers had seen the body on Friday night but had to cut through the wreckage to reach it
believed to be those of staff on the freight train
The crash was believed to have been caused by a switching problem which sent the trains onto the same track
while one carriage was thrust into the air and crashed down onto the other train
The freight train was carrying heavy iron construction girders
and the impact of the crash hurled the metal bars like spears into one carriage of the inter-regional passenger train
