Four Italian American MLB stars whose families left the Cuggiono area for a better life abroad and settled in St
Louis were honored with a mural depicting the “Quattro cavalieri di The Hill”
and the Italian Baseball Softball Federation has an important history
Many left this town in the province of Milan in search of a better future from the second half of the 19th century
Almost as a group they created a neighborhood in St
four athletes were born and achieved excellence in Major League Baseball and became pillars of an Italian-American community which grew rapidly throughout the USA
The mural concept was conceived at Milan Expo 2015 when lovers of Italian baseball, the Municipality and the Ecoistituto della Valle del Ticino, shared the vision of Claudia Pallanca at the Roberto Buganè-curated “Italian Baseball Softball Federation Baseball Hall of Fame Museum” Exhibition at Villa Annoni
Matteo Gandini was in Cuggiono when the community unveiled the mural on Sunday
Introduction by Marco Landi and Roberto Angotti
A mural was inaugurated in Cuggiono (MI) depicting four former Major League players
whose parents emigrated to the United States starting from the municipalities of the so-called 'Cuggiono district'
a sort of sub-province that included some municipalities in the area
is depicted in the first part of the mural
“The integration of Italian-Americans in cities like St
Louis was more complicated than that of those who
a metropolis more accustomed to welcoming people from overseas," explained Ernesto R
scholar of immigration from Lombardy to the USA
has greatly helped these people to feel an integral part of American society
But they have maintained an important connection with their land of origin
which we want to celebrate with this mural
We are sure that it will become a much visited and photographed corner of the city."
located in a public park on the corner between via Manzoni and via San Rocco
was attended by Cuggiono Mayor Giovanni Cucchetti and
very involved in the activities in memory of the famous former player and manager of the New York Yankees
who promised that she will soon be in Cuggiono to see the mural in person

IL (KFVS) - A Southern Illinois high school teacher is working with Herrin
Illinois residents and people from a Northern Italian town to restore the historical and cultural link between the two small cities
has reconnected Herrin to its sister city Cuggiono
students from Herrin High School and in Italy have been connecting via a pen pal program in partnership with Herrin High School and the city of Cuggiono -- Click here if you're
Several students from Cuggiono will visit Herrin in July of 2015 and will play Herrin High School students in a basketball game
The date of the game is yet to be set -- The students from Italy will stay for 10 days
Herrin High School Students have also planned to visit the students in Italy sometime in 2017
Herrin is widely know for it's annual event
"Herrin Festa," but its Italian roots go much deeper
More than 3,000 Italians from Cuggiono immigrated to Herrin and across Southern Illinois in late 19th and early 20th century to work in the area's coal mines
Since then many of the early Italian immigrants have died and their families moved on
“I saw a lot of people who had connections to the past but yet were losing their connections and didn't realize..
Didn't really think about what they were losing," Stanley said
An advocate and partner to Stanley is Sandra Colombo
a native of Milan in Northern Italy and a current Herrin resident
“I met friends and started learning the language on my own," Colombo said
Colombo came to the United States in 1946 after marrying an American soldier from Herrin
Like the millions of Italians that immigrated to the land of opportunity
among those was my grandfather Giacomo Luca
“I thank God and I thank this Country," Luca said
Luca says heritage is something you should never lose sight of
“Be proud of what we come from and be proud of what we contribute to the world," Luca said
Stanley said the student trips is just the beginning
She hopes to continue bringing back Herrin's Italian culture by opening an Italian museum -- Although

Beloved by all for his humble personality and positive attitude
he was also known for his paradoxical quotes
such as “It ain’t over ’til it’s over” and “When you come to a fork in the road
take it.” Simultaneously denying and confirming his reputation
“I never said most of the things I said.” His Italian origins made him a hero within the Italian American community
and a reason of great pride for the small town of Cuggiono
held at the recently renovated Berra Museum on the Montclair State University campus
Milani bestowed the honorary citizenship to Yogi Berra on behalf of the mayor of Cuggiono
This special recognition is meant to further solidify the link between Italy and the U.S
not only in terms of family ties for Berra
but also in view of an important project that Cuggiono is launching: the emphasis on baseball as a new sport for the youth in a country like Italy traditionally focused on soccer
The project will entail sports-related events as well as initiatives on the history of Italians in America and in particular U.S
baseball champions of Italian origin such as the mythical Berra
head of the Inserra Chair at Montclair State University
stated: “It has been a pleasure to be instrumental to Ernesto Milani’s stay on campus on this special occasion
also thanks to the collaboration with the Global Education office on campus
As Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies I am interested in continuing the conversation with the town of Cuggiono
Italy and the various institutions it is bringing together to both celebrate Italian Americans in baseball and support the growth of baseball in Italy
In conjunction with the Italian Program (Department of Spanish and Italian)
the Inserra Chair is interested in projects that make the legacy of Italian Americans into an occasion for dynamic exchanges between Italy and the U.S.
the mayor of Cuggiono declared: “We are grateful to the Inserra Chair for the support given during Ernesto Milani’s visit at Montclair State University
Our interests are intersecting over a common goal with much potential for the future.”
Milani expressed his excitement about this special occasion: “Meeting Yogi Berra was memorable
He is an idol to the entire Italian American community
He truly embodies the American Dream as the son of Italian emigrants who achieved fame and respect through sport despite his humble origins
because he is an example of discipline and dedication
he has a generous heart and a positive attitude towards everyone – the youth in particular
I also had the pleasure of interviewing Yogi’s nephew
This is the kind of message we are trying to bring back to Italy and to Italian sports for the new generations to come.”

An Italian boy who fell into a canal in Milan has survived despite being held underwater for as long as 42 minutes
The 14-year-old, who is said to have jumped off a bridge in Cuggiono with five friends into water which was just 6.5-feet deep, was in hospital for a month, Time reported
His heart stopped beating while he was in the water and he was assumed dead
until it was restarted with a defibrillator
Even his rescue was an incredible feat - taking a team of people and fire service divers 42 minutes to form a human chain and drag him from the murky canal bed
was attached to life support to enable his lungs and heart to recover and to keep his body oxygenated
But after four weeks in hospital in San Raffaele
spoken to his parents and asked whether his favourite football team
Alberto Zangrillo - personal physician to the Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi - told Italian media that the boy's resuscitation was "the greatest satisfaction of my entire professional career" and said that the cold water had helped save his life because it caused a slow down of his vital functions
The team also used a technique called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to extract oxygen-deprived blood, warm it up and add oxygen, before pumping it back into the body, The Times reported.
After 10 days of using the technique, which mimics the function of the heart, while Michael was in an induced coma, he survived.
“After 15 days we performed an MRI scan and his brain appeared OK,” said Dr Zangrillo.
His right leg had to be amputated below the knee due to circulation problems, but he is now said to be "alert", without brain damage, and remembers what happened before the accident.
Dr Zangrillo told a press conference: "The other day, he asked us for a mojito!
"He has recovered the spirit of the kid his parents and friends knew. He is a great guy, with uncommon intelligence. Every day I talk to him and joke."
He added: “There are very big question marks about the human brain. We don’t know its full possibilities. What we do know is that you should never give up.”
