the Owls’ appearance in the Military Bowl marked a momentous occasion for Temple fans—especially the most loyal
Bill DeSio was exactly where he said he’d be: In Annapolis
voice shouting and pride beaming as he stood across from Temple’s Diamond Marching Band
proving once again that he never does miss a Temple beat
cheered from an overwhelming sea of cherry and white
a Temple T-shirt and Temple hat decorated with two large Temple-themed pins
carrying a clear tote bag filled with binoculars and Temple swag
for the start of Temple’s largest-ever alumni tailgate to kick off the Military Bowl
he had the Temple “T” airbrushed on the side of his face and claimed his complimentary keychain
“I’m a fanatic about these things,” the 1973 graduate of the Fox School of Business admitted
If DeSio’s Temple license plate and Stella iPhone background don’t give it away
might: The room serves as a sort of showroom for his collection of Owl paraphernalia and photos with notable university figures
“But I’m not sure that will be able to be downsized.”)
representing a wide spectrum of backgrounds and showing their love for the university in a range of ways
But there’s no denying that there’s a special breed of fans—superfans
if you will—who are so unrelenting in their passion that they never seem to miss a game
DeSio falls into that camp.Born and raised in Chester
DeSio graduated from Chester High School and went on to serve in the Air Force during the Vietnam War
He then started college at the Community College of Philadelphia before transferring to Temple to study insurance
there were seven people in most of my classes,” he said
commuting to Temple to study while also working
DeSio accepted a job with the former Wausau Insurance Company in Wisconsin
kicking off a successful 40-year career in the industry
He retired in 2014 as a national underwriter for Travelers Insurance
and his affinity for the university’s teams only continued to blossom
It was a way to stay connected to his alma mater
everyone knew I was a huge Temple fan,” DeSio said
recalling that among his retirement gifts was a portrait of famed men’s basketball coach John Chaney
Kay DeSio chalks up her husband’s love for the Owls to gratitude
“He’s very proud of the education he got there,” she said
adding that Temple has in some ways become his hobby
He’s eager to rattle off news about the school
whether that’s the latest athletic or academic achievement
“It’s been very good for him,” said Kay DeSio
a University of Nebraska alumna who considers herself a Temple fan
you need something to be passionate about.”
Bill DeSio has spent the past several years volunteering with Temple’s Owl Club
to Paley Library to help students relax during finals
And he’s been a season ticket holder for men’s basketball and football games for 30 years
Even during the football program’s struggles
always had hope something would happen,” DeSio said
A good thing, he figures, because it all led to moments like this season, the first in which the Owls appeared in back-to-back conference championship games and bowl games. He also notes that it was the first time Temple ranked among the top 25 schools for student-athlete graduation success
DeSio traveled to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis to witness the Owls win the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 34-10 victory over Navy
marking the first conference title for the team since 1967
he was back for the bowl game with a group of nearly 20 other Temple supporters he regularly sits with—a camaraderie born at games over mutual adoration for the school
a former Owl and father of a Temple alumnus
“Bill’s like a little kid in a candy store with Temple,” Goldberg
“He’s one of the biggest fans you’ll ever find.”
That was evident throughout the bowl game against Wake Forest as DeSio’s disappointment at the score was quickly followed by continued optimism as he watched from his seat in Section 29
He drummed his hands against the seat in front of him and commanded the fans in his section to rise through the fourth quarter
whom he said he once met on a flight to see the Owls play in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in 2011
the game didn’t conclude as DeSio or the scores of Temple fans around him had hoped
he said with a recovering voice the day after the game
And being a diehard means DeSio will be back in the stands next season to cheer on the Owls—there's no doubt

Having overcome his back problems, he will give his contribution in perhaps the most delicate challenge of the year. Beating the Sicilians would be a breath of fresh air after a complicated period and before another very tough series of matches. But the steps forward seen against Vicenza (over 30 minutes at par) and the blitz almost achieved in Casale give a hint of optimism.

The N8 / flanker will not play for the Argentine team in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR)

The 30-year-old Ortega Desio was the starting N8 for Los Jaguares in the 2018 and 2019 Super Rugby seasons

He was not selected for the 2019 Rugby Championship
Ledesma explained that his decision was based on the form of the player in 2020

Soo too was fellow uncapped back-rower Juan Martín González
Of the seven back-rowers on the 30-man SLAR roster only one is capped

Javier Ortega Desio has re-signed with Los Jaguares
The back-rower has extended his contract with the UAR until December 2021
It sees the player from the pioneer Jaguars team set to remain in the side for an additional three seasons
The 28-year-old from Entre Rios province is a vital player for both Los Jaguares and Argentina
Under Mario Ledesma he became the leading domestic option at the back of the scrum
In RWC 2015 Ortega Desio played in three matches
He made the roster ahead of Tomás Lezana to join Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe
For RWC 2019 Ortega Desio is likely to be selected as a N8
and Lezana are leading options for flanker together with rookie Rodrigo Bruni and Marcos Kremer
the same one previously held by Ortega Desio under Daniel Hourcade
Yet the versatility of Desio Ortega means he can play anywhere in the back-row
He has been retained in the position this year under Gonzalo Quesada
Thus far he has played four games in the 2019 Super Rugby season
Robeks’ Senior Director of Franchise Development has 30 years experience in the franchise industry and is excited about the smoothie franchise
Victor “Vic” DeSio has worked in franchising for most of his adult life and has overseen or been part of some iconic franchise brands
He was heavily involved with Mail Boxes Etc
and Jenny Craig and understands what it takes to scale a large
Vic joined Robeks Fresh Juices & Smoothies to head up their development department and is leading their efforts to seek new franchise owners
and understands what it means to make an investment in a business like Robeks
He’s focused on recruiting Franchise Owners who are a great fit and who will thrive operating Robeks locations
Vic recently spoke about why he is excited to be a part of an organization that has a continual commitment to quality
and why he believes the brand is positioned to grow in the years ahead:
How did you wind up making the franchising business your career
I was thrust into the franchising industry when I was a senior in high school
My family was involved in the startup of Mail Boxes Etc
and he and my dad owned two of the first MBE locations
which is where I cut my teeth in franchising
I spent a lot of time working behind the counter at the family business
That’s where I learned about the operations and support side of MBE
They eventually sold the businesses when I was in college
My first job upon returning was to help develop the national accounts program
which we knew was going to be one of the big differentiators in that space
We were coming up on 1,000 locations and that really provided the brick and mortar presence the program needed
I migrated over to operations and profit-center development
Then the time finally came for my uncle and dad to retire
and the long term career opportunity wasn’t there
I had a great run with MBE with great exposure for someone my age
I know what the franchisee side of life is like
On the corporate operations and support side
I’ve learned about all of the things that go into building sustainable growth and profitability
Of course I bring that experience and perspective to my role in development
It’s important to us at Robeks that we’re bringing folks into the system who have a higher propensity to do well
we’re thinking about whether the candidate is a good fit and if they will be happy and productive
What attracted you to the Robeks smoothie franchise
it was immediately clear that the culture of the organization is one of character and quality
it’s the continual dedication and commitment to the quality of our smoothies and juices
That is the fundamental origin of our product
he was looking for a smoothie option that was healthful
He started making smoothies at home and ended up with 30 locations in a few short years
He understood that people really wanted an authentic
high-quality smoothie that tasted good — but there was nowhere to get them
He was smart to have the vision for making that same high-quality smoothie much more convenient and accessible
and you’ll see a steady stream of people coming in at all hours of the day; it’s proof that his vision was spot-on
We’ve never lost sight of that original vision
The commitment and dedication to maintaining the quality of our products has ultimately positioned us as a premium product in our category
Why do they choose Robeks over their competitors
Our core group of customers are health-minded people who have become juice and smoothie enthusiasts
They know what goes into their smoothies because our products are part of their diet and nutritional program
we have found that the more they know about our products the more they like and want them
When we conducted a focus groups that included competitors’ customers
“We like your products better and can’t wait until you open a store in my neighborhood so I don’t have to go so far out of my way to get a Robeks.” So we’re working on opening more stores to serve them better
That our products are utilized by people for dietary and nutritional reasons is one of the biggest benefits and most rewarding aspects of our business
refreshing taste of the drinks we prepare in the blender during the heat of the summer
and in the winter they gravitate more toward the freshly squeezed juices we serve
Why should someone invest in a Robeks franchise
The smoothie market is growing in a fashion that favors Robeks from a positioning standpoint
Everyone is more and more concerned about nutrition and authentic
and that is what our Robeks smoothie franchise stores provide for our customers
more and more people are looking for grab-and-go options that are healthier than fast food
We think we have the best product out there
is that we have very knowledgeable team members at the front counter
This is important because customers have unique needs based on their health and wellness concerns and often ask questions about ingredients and how items can be customized to their dietary needs and preferences
How does Robeks compare to its direct competitors
Our commitment to the integrity of our products is second to none
and we are absolutely on the cutting edge of menu innovation
We are very focused on providing Robeks franchise owners with the training needed to make sure they and their staff are knowledgeable about our products
so that they can effectively guide our customers to making the best choices among our products
If you are really passionate about helping people live healthier lives
a Robeks franchise is great business opportunity for you
We believe we are head and shoulders ahead of our direct competitors
and with a Robeks you get the best of a high-performance smoothie shop with an authentic juice bar
It’s the best of both worlds and one of the reasons we are growing
Don’t take my word for it – visit one of our stores
Then take a look at our competitors and try their products
We look for people with management experience: especially people who have managed people
although a food operations background is helpful
We look for people with outgoing personalities
who are not going to be afraid of going out into their community
We’re looking for franchisees who want to be fully engaged in the business
community leaders who grow quickly into multi-unit operators with three or more shops that they oversee on a full-time basis

CA — An investigation was under way Wednesday to identify the suspect who gunned down a 27-year-old man on a Corona street
Stephen Desio of Corona was fatally shot just after 1 a.m
Saturday near the intersection of Cottonwood Court and Fullerton Avenue
Jason Waldon said patrol officers were sent to the location to investigate reports of shots fired and found Desio in the roadway
Corona Fire Department paramedics arrived moments later and pronounced the victim dead at the scene
Waldon said the deadly shooting appears to have been "isolated" and not a random attack
with homicide detectives working to sort out details and find "potential witnesses" to confirm the circumstances and the suspect's identity
Anyone with information was encouraged to contact the police department's Detective Bureau at 951-279-3662

Customs and Border Protection’s National Targeting Center is a key part of the border security mission
That was the message President Donald Trump delivered Feb
2 to the people working at the center in Sterling
"This is quite a facility," the president told a group
which included Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen
senior officials from the Departments of Justice and State
"These are the men and women [those at the National Targeting Center] that really know what’s happening and know how to keep America safe
President Trump called for tougher enforcement of immigration laws
against the drug smugglers the center helps to target
Commissioner McAleenan briefed the president that illegal immigration numbers dropped in the first few months shortly after his inauguration
primarily due to the administration’s tougher immigration stance
Fiscal Year 2017 marked a 45 year low in U.S
increases in illegal border crossing attempts since then has prompted concern
"We’ve seen a marked increase in hardened smugglers attempting to bring hard narcotics across our borders and into our communities," said Commissioner McAleenan
"We’ve had increases in every category: cocaine
a very significantly potent synthetic opioid involved in so many overdoses in the United States."
Officers at the border and ports of entry check more than 1 million travelers and $6.3 billion worth of imported products on average every day
The sheer volume of that traffic – ranging from cargo containers to mail and express consignment packages to individuals crossing the border – makes it impossible to inspect every entry
The center uses CBP’s own seizure analysis and intelligence information
along with data gathered from other federal
to target travelers and cargo that pose the highest risk to U.S
including the threat of illegal immigration and drugs
Postal Service and commercial express carriers to target possible contraband coming into the country
In addition to promoting efforts to address illegal immigration
including funding to build and enhance a border wall
the president repeated his commitment to give those who protect the nation’s borders the tools they need to get the job done
"We’ve really put a lot behind [the National Targeting Center]
and we’re going to be putting a lot more behind it," added President Trump
Walls work and are vital to the integrity of the nation
That was the message President Donald Trump delivered to the public after reviewing U.S
Customs and Border Protection’s wall prototypes on the border in Otay Mesa
we’re not going to have a country," said President Trump as he toured the eight
30-foot high border wall prototypes and mock-ups
Following construction of eight border wall prototypes
assessed and evaluated the features and attributes of each prototype to identify which of them most effectively impede and deny illegal crossings
The assessment and evaluation included testing the eight wall prototypes
input from Border Patrol agents and an engineering analysis
The President was joined by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen
Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost and San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott
a veteran agent who was in the same area more than 25 years ago
what was the situation before the existing walls were constructed
"There was effectively no border in San Diego," said Scott
"It was a chaotic situation," adding the current fence
We decreased illegal cross-border traffic by 95 percent."
President Trump said the new wall will improve the Border Patrol’s ability to secure the border even further
Scott added the current barrier has also helped economic development on both sides of the border
"They re-established law and order in San Diego when they put up a wall," said President Trump
As the President visited the prototypes today
construction workers continued their work in El Centro
The project also includes around 2.25 miles of unpaved roads
The wall replacement is one of Border Patrol’s highest priority projects
The barrier was built in the 1990s out of recycled scraps of metal and old landing mat
steel pads once used by the military as landing platforms for helicopters
Although the existing wall has proven effective at deterring unlawful cross border activity
human and drug smuggling organizations damaged and breached this makeshift version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years
El Centro Sector continues to experience a high number of apprehensions of illegal immigrants and drug smuggling
the El Centro Sector apprehended 18,633 illegal aliens
1,526 pounds of methamphetamine and 2,521 ounces of heroin
there were 21 assaults against El Centro Sector agents
President Trump discusses specific details of the border wall prototypes with Project Manager James O’Loughlin
alongside DHS Secretary Nielsen and CBP Commissioner McAleenan
The construction of bollard wall design maintains agents’ visibility and better ensures their safety as they patrol along the border
The President and Secretary Nielsen expressed their appreciation for what CBP and U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement have done in the area
"CBP and ICE put their lives on the lines every day to protect our country," said Secretary Nielsen
"I want to thank ICE and the Border Patrol agents for their incredible work," said President Trump
We’ve cut down on border crossing because of what the Border Patrol has done."
but it’s also a state of big enterprise and CBP’s Office of Field Operations has been at the forefront of some of the state’s biggest projects
from international partnerships to efficient and friendly incoming traffic processing
"We’re Alaskans too," Alaska Area Port Director Lance Robinson said
OFO’s long-time guidance and support to local officials and its commitment to move the state’s economy ahead didn’t go unnoticed
Alaska Governor Bill Walker presented CBP with the Governor’s North Star Award for International Excellence
Considering the agency’s modest footprint—just 86 CBP officers and 98 OFO staff to cover nearly 600,000 square miles—the recognition is truly significant
It’s an ambitious project to build an 800-mile railroad to transport bitumen
a black petroleum goo from the oil sands of Fort McMurray
which can be as thick as cold molasses or as hard as a hockey puck
will then be will be loaded on ships in Anchorage
OFO supports Alaska’s partnership with China with timely clearances
The venture aims to construct a pipeline to bring natural gas 800 miles from the North Slope’s Prudhoe Bay along the Arctic Ocean
OFO is working with Canadian customs officials to improve the Alcan reporting station
Alcan sits isolated along the Alaska Highway at the Yukon border
the nearest major city and 90 miles from Tok
the 12 CBP officers who work there and their families live in a self-contained compound at the station
They make a major food run to Fairbanks about once per month
OFO is weighing a joint U.S.-Canadian reporting station so resources such as X-ray machines and other equipment can be shared and shifts could double—from two to four officers
Alaska Area Port Director Lance Robinson and Kelly Johnson
review maps in planning for an 800-mile railway to transport bitumen from Alberta to Alaska
Servicing Alaska’s immense territory—twice the size of Texas—also means working in some of North America’s harshest conditions
winter temperatures can remain well below zero for weeks
Alaska’s lack of roads and docks make inspections challenging
It may require flying to a small airfield then a long drive to a port
then taking a skiff to reach the anchored vessel and a climb up the side of the ship by ladder
"We have the greatest caliber of employees," Robinson remarked
It takes a special kind of person to be here."
Since there’s no permanent Border Patrol or Air and Marine Operations presence
That’s done through partnerships with other federal
CBP completed the final step in automating its cargo processing system
the Automated Commercial Environment or ACE
import/export process by reducing the processing and approval times of shipments
Not only did ACE eliminate duplicative and burdensome paperwork
it also provided a "single window" that allows businesses to electronically transmit the data required by the U.S
"ACE has been one of the most complex information technology projects ever undertaken by the federal government," said CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan
"It required strong partnerships and collaboration across government and industry."
it was an outgrowth of the Customs Modernization Act
This was done so that the agency could operate more effectively with businesses that had already automated and modernized their importing processes
The new program was intended to help the U.S
and process international shipments coming in and out of the country
Development of the new system was slow because of multiple challenges
"It was a constantly changing environment," said Brenda Smith
the executive assistant commissioner of CBP’s Office of Trade
"It was no longer just about collecting revenue
We had to be able to identify and manage terrorism threats
and ensure compliance with free trade agreements
which have exploded over the last 10 years
we were building the automated systems under some very challenging budget constraints."
Buoyed by the strength of political support
ACE’s core trade processing capabilities catapulted to completion
more than 5.3 million lines of code were developed to automate all phases of cargo processing and 269 forms have been automated across CBP and its 47 partner government agencies
"While it has been a long road from planning to implementation
a streamlined import and export processing system has already proven to be a tremendous benefit for international trade," said Commissioner McAleenan
CBP realized an estimated $28 million in processing efficiencies and industry achieved an estimated $52 million in savings."
ACE has resulted in many improvements including a 44 percent reduction in wait times for truck processing at land ports of entry and 68 times faster processing of bonds
"The completion of core trade processing in ACE marks a monumental milestone for CBP
the culmination of many years of dedicated partnership and innovation from government employees and the trade community," said Smith
expediting their import or export assessments at the border
speeds the flow of legitimate trade and improves the security
MAMARONECK — Having to replace all four of its setters from a year ago isn't the ideal situation for Rye Neck
especially when playing in a league with stiff competition
but head coach Kristin Desio is keeping a positive mindset for the season
"You just have to kind of deal with things as they come," Desio said
The Panthers will be in a league comprised of two-time reigning Section 1 Class C champions Dobbs Ferry
one of the top programs in Class C over the past three or four seasons
but it all comes down to whether or not we step up to the challenge and seeing who steps up to the plate," said Kristin Desio
who is entering her ninth season as the Panthers' varsity head coach
the '2' representing the number of setters on the court
which was great when it had a plethora of setters to fill spots — be it a substitution
Having to break in a primary setter could present an issue for the Panthers
whose season opens August 31 — one day before they start classes
but Desio is trying out different players to see who can step into the role
but we're in the process of finding out who that is and who that's going to be," Desio said
"The key is just trying to find consistency
and then the next day someone else steps up
"My thoughts aren't really put together yet
Desio noted that some girls set better during practice
while others set better in a game situation
• Sophomore Sam Yannuzzi will be one of the team's biggest factors
A libero her first two seasons with Rye Neck
Yannuzzi may be asked to hit this year if Desio calls upon her to do so
Yannuzzi would welcome a move to a more offensive role
but I'm really interested in moving around (on the court) so when I get older
… (Desio) does a really good job of preparing everybody so that you're ready for every position."
Twitter: @Zacchio_LoHud
• Yannuzzi suffered a spinal injury during the softball season after colliding with pitcher Diana King and taking a knee to the back, leaving her with temporary paralysis in her legs for approximately eight hours. She was cleared to play two weeks after the injury and shows no signs of restraint on the court, but it is an odd note, especially for someone so young.
"I was petrified," she said. "I didn't know what was going to happen."
• Senior Jackie DeCicco, who will be the team's primary hitter, said it's hard to tell right now who could fulfill the setter role(s), but noted a couple of players — such as Rachel Wurzburger — who could be a candidate. "I think a help setter is really (beneficial) for our team, especially when we're all over the court," DeCicco said of her preference for the 6-2 system. "We could use someone to help us out there."
• Six-foot sophomore Olivia Beach will likely start as the team's middle blocker after dealing with a knee injury over the summer. "We'll have to kind of ease her back in," Desio said. "We'll have to see how she feels. Hopefully she'll be back to normal because we were looking at her for a big brunt of our offense."

The man accused of "wilding out" on an elderly man in a Clinton Hill liquor store last week says he was merely protecting his girlfriend from sexual assault
I did what I had to do," Matt DeSio told us
"This guy was like a bum and he was on her
I was outside and came in and threw him off her."
DeSio also took issue with our characterization of him in the initial story
"It's not fair the way it's characterized in the media
the NYPD released images of a man who allegedly kicked and punched an unidentified 61-year-old man inside Lucky Liquor store on Myrtle Avenue
DeSio says he called the NYPD "immediately" after our article was published
and that he intends to turn himself in to police tomorrow
and he's missed a few times to come in." DeSio's attorney
has not responded to our request for comment
"First of all, I want you to know that I own a small business," DeSio told us. "Secondly, I'm from Staten Island, I'm ex-military, I'm an Iraq War veteran, so the way that you characterized me was totally off-base, alright? And that's not fair."
DeSio added, "I served my country as an infantryman, and you make me look like a fucking asshole."

New Dorp came into Saturday’s PSAL AAAA girls’ basketball semifinal riding the wave of two overwhelming playoff victories as well as an undefeated league season
third-seeded East New York Family Academy hadn’t checked the box scores and were completely unfazed by New Dorp’s undefeated league season
handing the second-seeded Central Cougars a 62-35 thrashing at Queens College
Throughout the best season in program history
New Dorp has had little difficulty dispatching opponents this season; posting a 17-0 PSAL record on the strength of a 34-point average margin of victory
ENY Family turned the tables on the Central Cougars quickly
running out to a big first-quarter lead and never looking back
“They played a tough man to man,” said New Dorp head coach Frank Guglielmo about East New York
They just got into us and our guard play just wasn’t good enough
We’ve relied on our guards all year and they’ve been great
The game began with New Dorp’s Jordanna Schrecker hitting two free throws after a mistake in the East New York book resulted in a technical foul being assessed to the Lady Eagles
The Central Cougars then scored on their first possession to take a 4-0 lead
That basket would be their last of the opening quarter as East New York went on a 20-0 run behind a tenacious defensive effort that produced a number of easy scoring opportunities and thoroughly frustrated New Dorp
The Central Cougars showed early life in the second quarter behind eight points from Sabrina Desio
who was coming off a 35-point performance in the quarterfinals
closing out the quarter on a 10-3 run and heading to the half up 32-12
New Dorp went to a man-to-man defense as a last resort and saw some initial results
as the Central Cougars were able to pressure the Lady Eagles for the first time
But when New Dorp couldn’t take advantage of East New York’s miscues
bringing down the curtain on the New Dorp season
“That’s a defense (man to man) that we never play,” said Guglielmo
it didn’t allow us to get into something else
We just weren’t efficient on offense and we were not good on defense.”
NOTES: New Dorp was denied its first-ever appearance in the PSAL title game...
New Dorp was the third straight victory over a Staten Island opponent for East New York
which eliminated Curtis in the round of 16 and Susan Wagner in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round...Guglielmo cited his gratitude for the contributions made to the program by his two graduating seniors Mya Nisbet and Destiney Adinnu
The latest creation by Openfabric (a firm with offices in Rotterdam and Milan) has something unique: the inauguration of a new urban space right in the middle of the second wave of the pandemic
During this phase of suspended socialisation
this new public place – Largo degli Alpini – seems to go against the tide
the one designed by Francesco Garofalo and Matteo Motti
in which the different areas are defined not on the basis of functions but freely
Openfabric’s design style envisages every person freely using spaces that belong to everyone
Largo degli Alpini is a simple environment
An urban surface that can be used to host concerts
with delicate colours appropriate for a historic city centre
wood and water favour the informal and flexible use of the spaces
The new square is the result of a municipal tender won by the Openfrabric group
SBG Architetti of Milan (group leader) and Meta di Monza
which included a feasibility study on five city squares (one built) and three city gates (two completed)
the project demonstrates the importance and urgency of social spaces

half-sisters who live together following the 2007 death of their mother in Manistee
have learned to make their relationship work.It was an imaginary game just about any big sister loves to play
Krista Sanders was the mother and her half-sister
she would teach her how to ice skate and ride a bike near their home in Manistee
I just adored her from the second she came out,“ Sanders recalled
She never imagined life and a sudden death would turn that game into the real thing
their mother was found on the floor of her bedroom
DeSio moved to the Grand Rapids home of Sanders and her husband
Sanders would need to figure out how to be both sibling and sometime-mother figure at the same time
Sanders had given birth to the first of her two children seven days before their mother died
There would be some tears and confusion as they sorted through grief and shock at their mother’s death and just how this new family would work
I can‘t picture it any other way,” said Sanders
I didn’t know if she was my mom or my friend
But I can’t imagine it any differently now,“ said DeSio
An expert on siblings raising siblings said such families “are rare.”
“But it is probably more common than we think,” said Laurie Kramer
a clinical psychologist at the University of Illinois who has been studying sibling relationships since 1983
“depends on the nature of the relationship they develop.”
While it is uncertain exactly how many such families there are in America
census estimates say there are 4.6 million children in households headed by grandparents and 2 million more in households headed by a relative other than a grandparent
“We really don’t know much about these families
It hasn’t received much attention,” said James Gleeson
an associate professor of social work at the University of Illinois
Gleeson has been studying so-called “kinship” families nearly 20 years
Gleeson oversaw a recent such study of 207 kinship families
which included five in which siblings were raising siblings
They included a 22-year-old woman with two children of her own who took in her 8-year-old brother and 15-year-old sister from their drug-addicted mother
Gleeson concludes that the sibling bond is “pretty darn strong
You’ve got people in a stage of development where they should be focused on their own issues
“They can’t leave their siblings where they are
They do it because they love their siblings.“
DeSio recalled some tense weeks after she moved in with her half-sister
They each were still grieving for their mother
who had taken pain medication for years for rheumatoid arthritis and for hepatitis
She remembered being disciplined for talking to a boy on the phone
Sanders has similar recollections of their first year together
“There were a couple of times when she would say
‘This is the hand we were dealt and we have to make the best of it we can.’”
that she was forced in her application to the court for permanent custody to write down rules of the household
such as curfew and chores that DeSio would be expected to do
“All of this had to be put down on paper,” she said
finding her place in a family that now includes the Sanders’ two daughters
DeSio is considering joining the Air Force after high school
she is feeling the anticipatory sense of loss common to any parent contemplating a child leaving home
“I can’t even imagine how parents let go,” Sanders said
She comforts me just as much as I comfort her.”
