Unfortunately for Favara, Frank Gotti just so happened to be the son of infamous mob boss John Gotti — and Gotti wasn’t the type to let Favara’s actions go unpunished Public DomainJohn Favara was allegedly killed on his neighbor John Gotti’s orders he put his house up for sale and began making preparations to move But just days before he was scheduled to close the sale Favara was apprehended by three men near his workplace and thrown into the back of a van with some saying the men beat Favara with a baseball bat and others claiming they shot him with a silenced pistol John Favara led a seemingly ordinary life. The 51-year-old lived with his wife, Janet, and two adopted children in Howard Beach, Queens. And while he was back-door neighbors with Gambino crime family mobster John Gotti Favara wasn’t involved in organized crime himself He worked at the Castro Convertibles factory in New Hyde Park Initially, Favara seemed to get along well enough with the Gotti family. According to the New York Daily News, Favara’s son, Scott, often had sleepovers with John Gotti Jr. growing up who died in a tragic accident at the age of 12 Favara finished up a shift at Castro Convertibles and headed home as the sun began to set Frank Gotti was riding a minibike he’d borrowed from a neighbor The 12-year-old drove the bike out into the street just as Favara was driving down it the sun glaring in his eyes and a nearby construction dumpster creating a blindspot The Gottis would later claim that Favara had been drunk when he struck Frank with his car Favara was initially unaware that he had hit Frank and kept speeding along dragging the child 200 feet before neighbors banged on his windows and shouted at him to stop his car When Favara finally saw the boy’s mangled body “What the f—k was he doing in the street?” local police received a mysterious call from a woman who told them that John Favara would be “eliminated.” When police tried to warn Favara But Favara would receive several more death threats in the months that followed Threatening phone calls from people who refused to identify themselves flooded in Someone put a photo of Frank Gotti in his mailbox Favara exited his home to find the word “MURDERER” spray-painted on his car Dith Pran/New York Times Co./Getty ImagesThe Gotti home in Howard Beach Favara quickly realized the threats were no joke. When John Gotti’s wife attacked Favara with a baseball bat outside his house on May 28 it became apparent that he and his family needed to get out of Howard Beach they were in the process of selling it to a buyer Six days before the closing date, the Gottis left for a family vacation in Florida, presumably to grieve the death of their son and to get away from the scene of his death for a while. But this trip also happened to give John Gotti a convenient alibi when a group of unnamed men confronted John Favara near Castro Convertibles and forced him into a van The Gotti family returned from their trip on Aug 1980 and were immediately questioned about John Favara’s abduction “I don’t know what happened to him “He killed my kid” with a shrug Favara was officially declared dead in 1983 with few clues as to what could have happened to his body when federal agents learned the location of a mob “dumping ground” in Ozone Park But Favara’s remains weren’t there John Gotti himself had died two years prior to that search, having spent the last decade of his life in prison after being convicted on murder and racketeering charges due to testimony by his underboss Sammy “The Bull” Gravano Inc./Alamy Stock PhotoAfter John Gotti died court documents filed ahead of the murder trial of Gambino family mobster Charles Carneglia seemed to provide some answers Carneglia had shot Favara on John Gotti’s orders then dissolved Favara’s body in a vat of acid to eliminate any possibility of finding his remains Favara’s son Scott remembered his father fondly But while no member of the Gotti family would ever admit to killing John Favara Frank Gotti’s sister Victoria suggested that it was Favara’s apparent remorselessness that got him killed “It’s human nature to want revenge against someone that hurts those you love,” she wrote “I only wish Favara had shown some remorse — some respect I believe he would be alive today if he had.” After reading about the disappearance of John Favara, read about Paul Castellano, the “boss of all bosses” who John Gotti usurped. Then, read about Frank DeCicco the mobster who conspired with John Gotti and paid the ultimate price Thanks for visiting This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page Jeremiah Favara is a gender studies scholar specializing in feminist media studies and queer studies whose research and teaching focus on intersecting dynamics of gender He is a graduate of Montana State University and received an MSc in Gender and Globalisation from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D in Media Studies from the University of Oregon His work has been published in Feminist Media Studies He is currently working on a book manuscript titled An Army of Some: Tactical Inclusion in the Military Recruitment Advertising Focusing on military recruitment advertising from 1973 to 2016 An Army of Someillustrates how industrial logics and representational strategies converged to suture supposedly liberatory messages like equity and diversity to practices of state violence Favara is delighted to be joining WGS at UW-Milwaukee and looks forward to teaching courses in feminist theory Copyright © University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. My own research for the book and other scholarship has found that straight white men have consistently been portrayed in recruiting ads as ideal service members Walter Thompson and Bates Worldwide developed recruiting plans that singled out Sports Illustrated as one of the most effective publications for reaching a high concentration of potential recruits because of the magazine’s popularity with male readers Advertisers contracted by the military viewed Ebony as crucial for reaching Black recruits. That’s largely because Ebony sought to balance content focusing on Black middle-class life with content covering the fight for racial inequality in American society Recruiting plans for the Marine Corps and the Navy all sought to place ads in Ebony especially as part of efforts to recruit more Black officers Since the 1960s, Cosmopolitan has played a key role for advertisers in reaching self-sufficient working women as a consumer market straight white women seeking independence – was also an ideal target of military advertisers Following President Ronald Reagan’s election in 1980, the military sought to decrease the numbers of military women – an effort now known as the “womanpause” – and recruiting ads published in Cosmo tapered off In the course of looking at more than 1,500 ads published in the three magazines between 1973 and 2016 Some themes – how much money you could make in the military the sense of purpose the military could provide – were similar across the different magazines But what was really distinct was how different ads portrayed different people as service members the Army and Army Reserve placed ads in Cosmo that depicted the military as a way for young women – mostly young white women – to find careers and gain financial independence The ads used headlines like “Did the last good job you wanted go to a man?” and “The best man doesn’t always get the job.” Text detailed the equal treatment – the same salaries educational opportunities and chances for promotion – that military women would find in the military The idea was to portray the Army as a unique site of opportunity for women Similarly, in the 1970s, ads published in Ebony portrayed the military as a site of equal opportunity for Black men A series of Navy ads talked about a “new Navy” where Black men had opportunities they wouldn’t have had 20 years prior In more recent decades, Ebony ads were less likely to use such explicit language of equal opportunities. Instead, they celebrated Black History Month by highlighting the accomplishments of exceptional Black service members from the past, such as the Montford Point Marines and the Tuskegee Airmen While there is no way to know if the magazine ads – and not TV ads or other methods of recruiting – were directly responsible for increasing enlistments, my research for the book found that the publication of ads targeting Black recruits and women corresponded with high rates of enlistment from those groups as recruiting ads were being designed to reach women and Black recruits the military itself was becoming more diverse I am interested in exploring how ads created a certain vision of the military as what I call a tactically inclusive institution By that I mean an institution that has been selectively inclusive of different groups but ultimately exploits the vulnerabilities of potential recruits and perpetuates state violence The term is not one that I or other scholars initially decided to use to describe what the military does. It comes from J. Walter Thompson, an advertising agency that has been creating Marine Corps ads since 1946. In a 1973 proposal for an integrated research program for the armed forces, housed in the J. Walter Thompson Co. archives one of the first stated objectives was to identify “vulnerable target groups.” The agency considered those vulnerable to military recruiting as people already inclined to join the military and those who might have reservations but were seen as persuadable. Ad agencies and the military used the term “propensity” to describe these two groups Propensity refers to the likelihood that individuals will serve in the military regardless of whether or not they really want to join the military Drawing on an array of different scholars, such as Jasbir K. Puar, Grace Kyungwon Hong, Roderick A. Ferguson and Dean Spade I think of vulnerability as being at the center of military recruiting One is deemed vulnerable to military service because of a lack of opportunities support or cultural capital that the military can promise The book argues that military inclusion is a form of power that furthers state violence. I am interested in studying military inclusion and recruitment advertising in order to challenge and resist the violence of the military. However, there were moments that made me think of military inclusion in a more complicated way. During an event at the Auburn Avenue Research Library in Atlanta I heard a panel of Black women veterans talk about their experiences in the military They spoke about how the military provided them with financial stability a chance to see the world and the opportunity to buy a home it is also one of the best avenues for upward mobility for many Americans between seeing military inclusion as an opportunity and as a risk and form of exploitation Notice: Transcripts are machine and human generated and lightly edited for accuracy John Yang: And on this last weekend of Hispanic Heritage Month the story of a graffiti artist to help bring the medium into the mainstream and along the way gave voice to Latina artists It’s part of our series Hidden Histories the works of Lady Pink are in the collections of big New York City art museums like The Whitney and The Metropolitan But New York City subway cars were her first canvas One of the pioneers in the male dominated 1970s and 80s graffiti art movement raising what was thought of as gang related vandalism into a serious art form First Lady of Graffiti: It is more than just the style It’s thousands and thousands of kids It’s like family and the way you dress the way you talk the way you act the way you write she began writing as spray painting graffiti is called she tagged her work Lady Pink because she was thought to be the city’s only female graffiti artist at the time and because she said she loved Victorian romances Graffiti artists competed to leave their work in the most dangerous and inaccessible places She said she loved the thrill but worried about arrest And it is my vision of what would have happened to me if I had been arrested as a teenager writing graffiti I’d get thrown in jail with other real criminals We didn’t consider ourselves hardcore criminals in any way But the reality of is that the people get hurt people get arrested your lives is ruin John Yang: As the mainstream art world became more interested in graffiti her work moved from subway cars to galleries in New York and Paris She was commissioned to create murals around the world Her recognition grew even more when she started the 1982 independent film “Wild Style,” a love letter to graffiti artists that’s regarded as the first hip hop movie Her artists praised for its Latina and feminist style and for tackling issues of social justice Lady Pink remains one of the most influential female artists in the field skill and passion on to a new generation teaching mural painting at New York’s Frank Sinatra School of the Arts John Yang Lorna Baldwin Azhar Merchant A rainy Met Gala got underway Monday with a tuxedoed choir and a lot of pinstripes Two-time Grammy nominee Sierra Hull has reached the pinnacle of bluegrass on her chosen instrument The New York Times showed its breadth with awards honoring reporting from Afghanistan Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over invading French forces at the Battle… Everett’s Pulitzer confirmed the million-selling “James” as the most celebrated and popular U.S Sean “Diddy” Combs was coercing and abusing women with help from a network… the dress code is about tailoring and suiting as interpreted through the history and meaning of Black dandyism… Big-budget movies like the upcoming "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" are shot around the world The federal sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs whose wildly successful career has been dotted by allegations of violence,… distant George Lucas stories that might seem like science fiction but are Rio de Janeiro’s state police said they had worked with the Justice Ministry to disrupt an attack allegedly planned by… Artists with different physical and developmental abilities sometimes have to be creative not just with the content of their art,… President Trump has accused the Smithsonian and other museums of promoting “narratives that portray American and Western values as inherently… Buzzi rose to fame as the frumpy and bitter Gladys Ormphby on the groundbreaking sketch comedy series “Rowan & Martin’s… “Aldeas — A New Story” will feature conversations between Pope Francis and Scorsese including what the filmmakers say are the Pope's… © 1996 - 2025 NewsHour Productions LLC Gallery BooksFrank Gotti was hit by a car driven by John Favara and dragged down the street while pinned beneath it Young Frank Gotti had no idea what his father did for a living The 12-year-old focused on the important things: sports Overjoyed at making the football team on March 18 John Gotti’s son ran outside to ride his bike — when he died in a horrific accident In the New York City neighborhood of Howard Beach in Queens, the child was struck by a speeding drunk driver. Frank Gotti’s sister Victoria had seen him riding around after walking out of a McDonald’s and reminded Gotti to be home in time for dinner at 5 PM She got home only for the phone to ring — and neighbor Marie Lucisano to tell her there’d been an accident Frank Gotti had been dragged down the entire block pinned beneath Favara’s car. Neighbors finally got him to stop in front of Lucisano’s house after shouting at him, banging on his windows, and even climbing on the hood of his car. Gotti’s sister and mother Victoria DiGiorgio ran over as Gotti was being taken away in an ambulance “What the f**k was he doing in the street?” Favara drunkenly shouted he rushed to meet his wife and daughter at the hospital Victoria recalled her father saying he was afraid for “the first time in my whole life” while sitting in the waiting room Doctors had waited for him to arrive in order to break the news: his son had died Victoria recalled him being emotionless and operating as if on autopilot DiGiorgio was driven home and broke down crying in her son’s room She then broke a mirror and tried to cut herself and later tried once more to kill herself by swallowing a bunch of pills John Gotti called a doctor who medicated her to sleep McMahon knocked at the family home to ask who would repay him for his broken bike DiGiorgio heard raucous laughter and music emanating from Favara’s home one night John Gotti arrived to silently bring her back home DiGiorgio returned after her husband fell asleep and began destroying the blood-spattered car with her bat Favara shouted at her about paying for the damages John Gotti and his wife flew to Florida under the guise of grieving in sunnier conditions — and Favara vanished on July 28 Witnesses told the FBI that he was last seen being beaten and forced into a van They nervously comforted DiGiorgio and then took John Gotti outside to tell him Favara had gone missing — and asked if knew anything about this While the Gottis alleged Favara was drunk at the time of the crash Authorities determined that Frank Gotti had ridden his bike into the street and that the driver had little chance to swerve While John Gotti certainly had the motive to make Favara disappear there was no body or evidence to prove he was even dead FBIKevin McMahon was one of the two informants Carneglia reportedly told about about John Favara’s murder “I don’t know what happened to him but I’m not sorry if something did,” said Victoria DiGiorgio police and informants claimed John Favara had been killed and buried in the ocean some of these rumors started being substantiated during the trial of Charles Carneglia Indicted on racketeering and murder charges in Brooklyn federal court the Gambino soldier was accused of assisting in five homicides While Favara’s wasn’t one of them prosecutors alleged he was involved in it to argue for a stiffer sentence Carneglia had certainly told two informants that he dissolved Favara’s corpse in a barrel full of acid and said it was “the best method to avoid detection.” One of those informants was none other than McMahon “Let them prove it,” said Victoria Gotti “They have a better shot at finding Jesus Christ’s bones.” she was certainly right about that — as John Favara’s remains have never been found After learning about Frank Gotti and the subsequent disappearance of John Favara, read about bone-chilling mob killer Aniello Dellacroce. Favara said as he started to use sign language. "What part of it don't you understand Another person interjects and comes to the rescue of the man adding that they have the right to walk down the street before Favara smiles and sarcastically says, "You're spot on A woman then speaks up and says she was tired of the people who made the complaint soliciting her and her daughter for $10 Favara and other deputies at the scene would leave without incident which the poster said captured the entire incident Whidden's posted responseEight hours after the video surfaced Whidden left his first comments on the post After agreeing about the inappropriateness then came the excuses after a woman asked for his help and said a lot of people in the community were treated the same way "I need to see the entire video in order to understand in what context he used the term," Whidden wrote. "Based on the language used by the people the deputies were dealing with I have a feeling he was trying to get on their level I also have never known him to be like that and I've worked with him for years." Right after Steve Whidden took office he rehired Favara Whidden remarked that no one seemed concerned about a woman in the video using a racist slur before saying some corrective actions were needed "Well we don't know that he used it first," he wrote The video looks like it starts halfway through The poster told Whidden the video was in its entirety and that he was present More: Hendry County hired Clewiston officers who were never investigated for alleged sex with informant asking for the name of the woman who used a racist slur the deputy in question is Hispanic also," he wrote The Sheriff's Office did not respond to questions about Whidden's supposition as to why Favara used the racial slur under what circumstances the term would be acceptable to use or why no substantive action was taken a criminal justice professor at Florida Gulf Coast University and retired police officer said there should be no excuses given that Favara was in uniform there are rules of professionalism and decorum you have to abide by," Thomas said Thomas acknowledged there were extenuating circumstances that would absolve law enforcement officers of uttering racist slurs But when an officer transitions from private to public life or is in uniform "I always looked at policemen as having multi-faceted personalities," Thomas said they have to show the utmost respect and professionalism Law enforcement disciplinary records show mixed reactions by agencies to racism or bias by their personnel "It would depend on the organization and how they want to enforce it," Thomas said "When an officer gets caught doing something like that, they are usually required to go to some kind of diversity training and placed on probation so this kind of thing doesn't happen again." The checkpoint began Friday at 10:30 p.m. and 179 drivers were stopped before it was closed at 2 a.m., said Capt. Frank Warchol. The checkpoint was pre-approved by a Rockingham County Superior Court judge and police were assisted by members of the Portsmouth Police Explorers, Warchol said. Arrested for a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated was James Favara, 56, of 4 Gray Court, Rye Beach, police said. Also from Rye and charged with driving while intoxicated was Jaime Gray, 23, of 45 Cable Rd. From Portsmouth and arrested at the checkpoint was Samantha Bloom, 21, of 551 Greenland Rd., on a misdemeanor alleging she was driving while intoxicated. Lastly, police arrested Rita Dennison, 29, of 42 Beechstone Apartments #5, on charges alleging possession of a controlled drug and transporting a controlled drug in a motor vehicle. Dennison is scheduled to be arraigned in the Portsmouth Circuit Court on June 17, while the other three are due to appear in the court on June 3, Warchol said. All were released following their arrests on personal recognizance bail, according to police. Gothamist is a website about New York City news There is a fairy-tale character to the Farm Cultural Park in Favara a sort of micro urban landscape that is not an exact reflection of the process of urbanization that has produced it not does it emphasize architectural values like sustainability or the correct use of energy or stage-manage any kind of claim to be leading to a “renaissance” of a crucial site in the province of Sicily There is nothing polemical about this place and yet it is It does not adopt an arrogant attitude towards its surroundings the Farm Cultural Park has appeared as a material addition to a place that is finding it hard to imagine its future and it is spinning this place a yarn enriches and stratifies the works of the artists in residence – reproduce and anticipate a disconcerting effect typical of art The materiality with which the fairy-tale houses are constructed is one without particular tectonic features The work of Laps Architecture and Castelli Studio has given concrete form to a dreamlike material in a derelict urban structure reduced and simplified existing types of buildings and used the uninhabited spaces in a caricatural way And in the end this sees the project become a space that cannot be reduced to the existing even though the existing – the porous urban fabric of the historic centre of Favara a few kilometres from Agrigento – has immediately shown curiosity about and a sense of participation in this tale told with architectural material In describing it as having a fairy-tale character it is not my intention to play down the significance of the project The project brings the town to life by playing on the effect of surprise and creating new sequences between streets and squares Rather it is to indicate a specific identity to the “invention” a tendency towards a kind of suspension of reality to the bringing into play of a vision that – and this is worthy of careful consideration – comes from a form of voluntary exile have a relationship with Italy that is a mix of detachment and lucid attention Gravitating towards foreign parts but with local origins they have put into this intervention an uncertainty and an ingenuousness that is something of a rarity in the world of Italian architecture All this translates into a sensation of uninhibited but not uncontrolled freedom of solutions that always aim for the greatest possible simplicity from a technical as well as an aesthetic perspective We should not be misled by the choice of the curators of the Italian Pavilion at the 15th Venice Biennale of Architecture to include the Favara Farm Cultural Park in its programme Taking Care: Designing for the Common Good The inhabitants of Favara and the artists who have collaborated on the project constitute a new the fruit of an authentic and visionary integration There is undoubtedly an element of the “common good” in this project but it does not seem to me to be its salient characteristic To treat it as “social architecture” would in fact run the risk of limiting the real significance of this intervention which is instead both less and more than a reflection on the common good Something less for the character referred to earlier of an architecture that sees itself as a sort of materialized serenity without celebration of itself or of any role of salvation that But there is also something more in the affirmation of change centred on the unexpected a transformation that relies on surprise and the unpredictable and that even seems to be capable of accepting its possible failure and treating it We know too that fairy-tales are filled with perils and pitfalls with double meanings that can be consolatory or trigger fear that can make us feel safe in the world or prepare us for the worst The meaning of these tales is continually reworked and put to the test and they are told every time as if it were the first The sense of this architecture as a “palimpsest” just like the architecture of a fairy-tale lies in the relationship between its simple structure and the modes of interpretation to which it will be subjected over time where small shops are mixed with art small towns: with very few jobs and no social appeal they drive most of the younger generations away the historic centres become a mix of ruined old houses and newer buildings or it has been experiencing a progressive and unstoppable metamorphosis that turned it into a destination for artists and tourists from all over the world the first tourist and cultural park built in Sicily moved many minds and gave hope to those who believe that investing in art and culture make it possible to reverse a consolidated trend an international short film festival which occurs every summer at the Farm we had the pleasure of meeting the notary Andrea Bartoli who started this amazing reality together with his wife Florinda Saieva nine years ago many Sicilians have to make: leaving your country or staying Andrea Bartoli and his family took a decisive resolution: «When you are forty you realize that probably nobody will change your life and so you have to do on your own we had thought to move to Paris and we were at the horns of a dilemma Then we decided to move back home on one condition: to stop complaining and act without waiting for someone to change our life» Notary Bartoli’s view on the issue is more articulated than the standard: «The simplest solution seems leaving but I think that suburban cities (normally considered a bit lackluster and unappealing) give you the chance to do something great Citizens don’t only commit to do their job but to improve the place they live too» Involving citizens to battle poverty and isolation» Walking the small street of the seven courtyards in Favara at the heart of the small revolution created by Farm you experience a sense of “normality”: the merge of old and new has been so carefully implemented that one is lead to believe that the same could be possible anywhere Once abandoned buildings now host pubs and B&Bs and artists from all over the world come here to exhibit their works The small miracle of Farm is really to impart the idea that despite years of desertion and indifference it is possible to make life better in the abandoned small towns too there have been difficulties (and there still are) as the Mr Bartoli explained: «The greatest challenge is to tear down people’s wall of suspicion gave us the opportunity to have a gradual and measured growth We worked so hard to steal 50 sqm from ruins and give them back to the community that every time the joy we felt was as great as the effort This led us to consider very cautiously the effects and the actions to put into place and to evaluate the results at every step» One question remains: can the Farm Cultural Park experiment really be exported «I firmly believe that it can and should  ̶   answers Bartoli   ̶   Of course it is unthinkable to realize the same dynamics of Farm everywhere which had us look for Sicilian “ambassadors” that could start a path like ours in their territories several projects similar to ours have sprung all over Sicily: Periferica (Mazara del Vallo) Eclettica (Caltanissetta) and Trame di quartiere (Catania) In our land we need a great educational work and we try to do it like a drop in the ocean» notary Bartoli was called “the crazy notary” because his challenge of turning a town like Favara into a well-known cultural and artistic centre seemed a utopia after the first step and the realization of the first utopia the second utopia is possible: «Farm is successful not for what happened within its seven courtyards The second utopia concerns a more involved participation in problems like poverty and migration Nowadays we need greater purposes to reach collectively by which to share economic resources and knowledge We imagine that every citizen of Favara could own a part of a parking garage a housing association or a children’s zone in ten years The idea is to think “What we want this town to be like?” young people leave and everybody complains but we are not able to talk each other and
