Film Festival - Nouvelles Vagues and it already opened in theaters in France a few months ago This night is like all the others for Mady the enigmatic young girl he helps out that night Mady has only one night to prove his innocence in a city in turmoil Newcomer Jonathan Feltre stars as Mady Bala at the center of the film The film is set over the course of a tumultuous night amid a Black Lives Matter protest in Belgium - it was filmed in Brussels & Molenbeek-Saint-Jean tons of action and intensity as he runs around the city Here's the official US trailer (+ intl. poster) for Michiel because of how devotedly grounded it is.  The screenplay (written by Blanchart and Gilles Marchand) begins simply enough following twentysomething Mady Bala (Jonathan Feltre) through the routine of his night job as a locksmith until a cute brunette who calls herself Claire (Natacha Krief) lures him into a heist his routine is in the rearview mirror as he races to survive a night where he's enraged a ruthless gangster with a band of skinheads at his beck and call he'll need to get the girl — or at least the cash.  from its high-rise apartments to its bumping nightclubs and we get to be his captive audience.  The first taste of action comes in the apartment Claire claimed was hers Mady silently takes in the living room's layout the Nazi memorabilia prominently displayed and the hulking stranger who has just found an intruder in his place And scrambling to fight back against a brute who would turn his face into a fire — with an assist from the lit stovetop — Mady has to think fast perfect for a quick stab to the gut.  While this might sound like a masterful improvisation of weaponry Feltre's performance is one of terror and bewilderment conveniently trained to best any adversary He's just a guy trying to get through the night And this scramble makes all the violence inflicted by and on him hit like a gut punch The stakes feel real as Mady wriggles away from the neo-Nazi on a rampage And even as this scrappy locksmith bests him with a lucky blow to the neck Mady gags at the sight of blood burbling from his fallen foe's neck.  In one swift and brutal action sequence at the film's top Blanchart keenly establishes the life-or-death stakes and the gritty reality of this action movie The broader details of the gangsters and their crimes are kept smartly vague as none of that matters in the urgency of Mady's dilemma And it's absolutely enthralling to see this slim everyman in a bulky jacket obscuring his ripped physique — as opposed to a jacked-up Wolverine — take on the hell that is the night ahead of him Mady is soon in the hands of a scowling kingpin (French actor Romain Duris who turns him over to two cronies assigned to the task of recovering the loot that clever Claire stole No one cares that Mady was an unwitting accomplice Reason and rationale are a luxury Mady is not granted and so he must look for any opportunity to best his captors.  But even as Night Call turns into film-noir territory with Claire the screenwriters refuse to keep her an easily evil figure the film twists into emotionally intelligent terrain that makes its climax incredible in more ways than one Not only does Night Call defy genre expectations but it also plays to reality without feeling like a letdown.  committing convincingly to the fight choreography without losing Mady's wide-eyed shock at his circumstances Duris — whose previous movies range from Jacques Audiard's neo-noir Beat to rom-coms like Heartbreaker and the dreamy Mood Indigo — is harrowing as a snarling gangster Jonas Bloquet is both intimidating and intriguing while Natacha Krief as Claire is so deeply charming that it's easy to see how Mady fell for her ruse the performances in Night Call are distinctive making the underbelly of Brussels a place that's sinister but sensational.  Combine these crackling performances and the savagely smart script with cinematographer Sylvestre Vannoorenberghe's smooth sensibility which thoughtfully pushes and pulls audiences through the labyrinth that is Mady's mad night Blanchart's first film is as electrifying as thriller that’s uninterested in examining the political underpinnings its story relies on Director: Michiel BlanchartOriginal Title: La Nuit Se TraîneGenre: Action Release: TBAWhere to Watch: In US theatres and on digital platforms Night Call is a Belgian neo-noir and action thriller about Mady (Jonathan Feltre) a well-meaning locksmith who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time He gets a call from the enigmatic Claire (Natacha Krief) who needs him to break open the locked door to her apartment she disappears under the pretense of needing to grab some cash from the ATM to pay him leaving him alone to wait in the apartment he stays there until a brutish and aggressive man shows up and immediately attacks him After a violent – and exceptionally well staged – struggle but two more guys show up and take him with them As it turns out, there were a million euros stashed away in the apartment Mady unknowingly helped Claire break into. With her long gone, the group of gangsters led by Yannick (Romain Duris, of The Animal Kingdom) blame Mady for the money’s disappearance That he killed one of them doesn’t help his case either and if he manages to get both the money and the girl (whose real name is obviously not Claire) back by the end of the night And so begins a hunt across Brussels and its nightlife All of this is set against the backdrop of protests and civil unrest but one of the movie’s biggest missteps is that it doesn’t do anything meaningful with this setting which seems to primarily exist to create easy obstacles Since the police are busy dealing with the protests they can’t help Mady when he tries to call them parts of the city are conveniently blocked by the demonstrations and no matter how late into the night it gets there are always huge crowds of people to hide between It’s disappointing that writers Michiel Blanchart and Gilles Marchand didn’t do more with such a perfect set up If you’re telling the story of an innocent Black man who’s wrongfully accused of a crime against the backdrop of a Black Lives Matter protest in the wake of police brutality you should really find a way to connect those elements in a more effective way thematically they are almost entirely separated except when it’s a useful tool for the screenwriters to keep the story going that is because the action here is shot practically and the occasional fall from a building all have a real impact on the viewer It’s clear that director Michiel Blanchart and his team know how to shoot an action scene Sylvestre Vannoorenberghe’s camera creates dynamic movements to accentuate the big beats of a fight And the long takes help both the well-choreographed action as well as the quieter moments of tension The sound design by Fabrice Grizard is similarly fantastic in Night Call Mady’s head is wrapped in gaffer tape The sound of the environment is dampened while his struggling breath and the squeaking tape on his face are brought into the foreground which only increases the anxiety and tension of the scene This kind of stylized sound design that plays with the subjective experience of its characters is found all throughout the film making us feel the same stress Mady must be under Jonathan Feltre gives a very strong performance as Mady a young man whose naivety and innocence bring him into an unjustly difficult situation he’s forced into actions that nobody (including himself) would think he’s capable of all the while attempting to keep his humanity intact We see him breaking down at the thought of having to torture someone and wrestling with the kill from the beginning of the film And so much of that happens in Jonathan Feltre’s face there’s a final beat in his character towards the very end that doesn’t work Even if Jonathan Feltre gives it everything he has the script is not there to support this development in his character And that’s the big thing keeping Night Call back from being truly great There’s the BLM protest happening in the background Or the innocent core of Mady’s character that he fights to maintain in the face of darkness Even the ex-girlfriend that is mentioned twice but seems to be immediately forgotten the moment a scene passes And so Night Call had all the elements to craft a special new entry into the thriller genre but because it couldn’t figure out how to coherently put all these ideas together in a way that would make them matter it’s just another technically well-executed action crime thriller After innocent and naive locksmith Mady is tricked into opening the wrong door he finds his life threatened by a dangerous gangster he has to find the money he unknowingly helped to steal before the end of the night Night Call was released in US theaters and on VOD on January 17 Loud and Clear Reviews has an affiliate partnership with Apple so we receive a share of the revenue from your purchase or streaming of the films when you click on some of the links on this page This won’t affect how much you pay for them and helps us keep the site free for everyone Final Destination Deaths, Ranked from Worst to Best Sharp Corner Review: Overly Subtle Thriller Queen of the Ring Review: Surface-Level Biopic The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 4 Review Doctor Who Season 15 Episode 4 Review Motel Destino Review: A Little Slice of Purgatory 2025 Open City Documentary Festival: 10 Movies to Watch The Uninvited Movie Review: Hollywood Meh-hem La Nuit se traîne is the new action film from Michiel Blanchart, a Belgian director known for his award-winning short films. "you did so much good without many words but with great commitment and concreteness you carefully rebuilt where neglect had caused destruction." several questions have been raised: "What caused the tragedy was not mistakes in the design or construction of the dam but the very fact of wanting to build a reservoir in the wrong place "for putting the logic of profit before care for humanity and the environment in which we live." the Pope appealed for proper care of Creation "I never tire of repeating that caring for Creation is not simply an ecological factor but an anthropological issue: it has to do with human life and it concerns the future of everyone and the global society in which we are immersed." “[ It concerns the future of everyone and the global society in which we are immersed.]” but "tremendous and destructive," he also recognized "in the case of Vajont," or "inaccessible to so many in the world today who suffer thirst or have no drinkable water." he urged the faithful to adopt the respectful gaze of Saint Francis "to recognise the beauty of creation," stop devastating the environment and "to collaborate fraternally in the development of life." "You do this," Pope Francis said "by preserving the memory and bearing witness to how life can rise again precisely there where everything had been swallowed up by death."  Thank you for reading our article. Two days later Superintendent Lisa Antunes began a leave of absence The school board accepted Antunes' resignation effective May 1 at Monday's meeting Antunes said she was leaving the district "for personal reasons" and will be pursuing "other professional opportunities." Board members made no other comment about Antunes' departure Details of the settlement between Antunes and the district were not disclosed Marini said he could discuss the findings of the annual audit but could not discuss "at this time" the results of a forensic audit the district is conducting The board has also hired a special counsel to review the district's financial practices The audit found "recurring instances" where large checks were issued before the bill list was approved by the school board was "circumventing the controls in place over board approval over disbursements." The audit also found that there were instances when purchases over the bid threshold were made without the school board approving the bids and no exemption was given from the bidding process Another finding of the audit was that overtime was being paid to employees who were not eligible for overtime there were instances where professional contracts were awarded without either a specific amount of compensation or a "not to exceed" amount were included in the pact The audit also revealed that the district's capital assets records were not accurate In March, Marini said the district was waiting for the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office "to give the thumbs up" for the district to discuss the audit.  More: Your commute along the Raritan River in Hillsborough may be disrupted for quite a counties Reviews A law-abiding locksmith may not seem like a profession that would lead to a lot of action but in Michiel Blanchart’s Belgian thriller “Night Call,” one mundane assignment turns its hero’s shift into a tense fight to survive picks up the phone and hears a young woman’s voice on the other end But this supposedly routine call feels off and making excuses as to why she doesn’t have her I.D but when she slips away to allegedly get his payment another figure stands in the doorway and this one is much more scary But his escape is short lived as Mady is captured by the man’s associates demanding the money stolen from the apartment Mady must now find ways to placate a gang that’s ready to kill him at a moment’s notice by solving the mystery of where their money went before they change their mind.  Blanchart’s film is a boiler plate thriller where a normal person finds themselves in extraordinary circumstances Mady must use his wits and experience to pick locks Mady is as hellbent to survive as his enemy is to find their looted cash Feltre plays a sympathetic figure who cries when hurting someone and scares himself when he kills the man who assaults him proactively looking for solutions to escape and fight back when needed.  Mady’s desperation is palpable in many frames of the movie thanks to the work of Blanchart and his cinematographer They ensure their hero’s sweaty struggle to make it to the dawn is felt in pained close ups and breathless chase sequences So many of the shots channel a film noir spirit as the camera follows a desperate man on the run from the shadows closing in on him When he’s face-to-face with the gang trying to shake him down for answers almost as if they were audaciously operating in the light without consequences It certainly feels that way as police intervention – when it belatedly arrives – shows up with a woeful outcome.  While “Night Call” delivers in the thriller department of the narrative it stumbles when trying to tackle the politics of the day who co-wrote “Night Call” with Gilles Marchand and Laurent Brandenbourger includes the Black Lives Matter protests in Belgium as a backdrop to the action Mady drives by protestors on the way to his job and he listens to some of the news updates before switching to his favorite singer Blanchart clearly wants to say something about BLM does not seem especially called to take to the streets as he has a job to keep he’s harassed by another protestor who calls him a “sheep” for not joining the march After cops arrest Mady and a different protestor she tears into the officers about their unlawful treatment and she’s oblivious to violence that’s about to happen The protestors are painted in a negative light yet later when police brutality reenters the film for its final act now it seems that BLM protestors were vindicated after all While “Night Call” satiates the craving for a typical thriller the BLM subplot feels strangely out-of-place and off-putting as if it were grafted on in an effort to seem relevant White supremacism even makes an appearance early on in a cutaway shot inside of the apartment Mady initially opens showing Nazi paraphernalia on a mantle he can’t see in the dark When the hulking guy walks in on an unknown Black man in his kitchen it doesn’t seem like Mady has found a cell of white supremacists the idea is introduced then never mentioned again The movie doesn’t need that to feel scarier or more tense just the threat of accidentally walking in on a robbery is adrenaline enough but the filmmakers added more ingredients to a stew that was already fully cooked Monica Castillo is a critic, journalist, programmer, and curator based in New York City. Despite previous findings in the literature, where no evidence for a redshift evolution of the metallicity in AGN was found (Nagao et al., 2006), a lower metal content moving in more distant sources is what one would expect from models of cosmic chemical evolution. Note also, that the observed trend in Figure 2 is opposite to the trend introduced by the presence of the N V λ1240 line which was favoring very high metallicities Future plans include the implementation of the AGN NLR models in a fitting tool based on sophisticated fitting technique, i.e., BEAGLE (Chevallard and Charlot, 2016 BEAGLE combines in a coherent way emission from different components (stars adopts Bayesian approach to obtain posterior probability distribution functions of every model parameter and includes predictions from galaxy formation models BEAGLE allows to chose between different options based on the user's aims: (i) to fit spectro-photometric data at ultaviolet to infrared wavelengths (ii) to create synthetic catalogs of galaxy SEDs and (iii) to the study retrievability of galaxy physical parameters for different type of observations BEAGLE can handle data from broad-band photometry and/or spectroscopic information (e.g. emission line intensities or equivalent widths) With the implementation of the AGN NRL photoionization models BEAGLE will be an ideal tool to (i) fit ultraviolet/optical spectra of obscured AGN at any redshift (ii) study the effects of the presence of AGN with different accretion luminosities on the ultraviolet/optical spectral features of a galaxy spectrum and (iii) to produce mock catalogs of ultraviolet/optical spectra of Type 2 AGN In the previous Sections we have described new photoinization calculations for the NLR of AGN We showed how ratios of emission-lines at ultraviolet wavelengths are good diagnostics of the ionizing source (nuclear vs photoionization models are useful tools for the study of the physical properties of the ionized gas (e.g. density) of AGN and they can be easily implemented in fitting tools to interpret current spectroscopic observations of high redshift sources The exploitation of these spectral models and analysis tools will be particularly useful to interpret observations of high-redshift galaxies with future facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope and extremely large ground-based telescopes which will push previous studies up to the epoch of reionization (z>7) AF and SC developed the spectral models and the diagnostic diagrams performed the spectral measurements and coordinated the analysis and SC all contributed at the implementation of the AGN module within the fitting code BEAGLE The handling Editor declared a shared affiliation The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest 1. ^Predictions of the intensities of the main optical and ultraviolet emission-lines are available through http://www.iap.fr/neogal/models.html 2. ^Note that we consider a galactic attenuation curve (Cardelli et al., 1989) for consistency with the fitting procedure used to derive the host galaxy stellar masses 3. ^For a direct translation between metallicity, Z, and Oxygen abundance we remind to Table 2 of Gutkin et al. (2016) where solar metallicity Z⊙ = 0.01524 correspond to 12 + log(O/H) = 8.83 Classification parameters for the emission-line spectra of extragalactic objects CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Accreting supermassive black holes in the COSMOS field and the connection to their host galaxies CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Nebular emission from star-forming galaxies CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Modelling and interpreting spectral energy distributions of galaxies with BEAGLE CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar The MOSDEF Survey: optical Active Galactic Nucleus Diagnostics at z~2.3 Metallicity evolution of AGNs from UV emission lines based on a new index CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Nuclear activity versus star formation: emission-line diagnostics at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Google Scholar Emission-line diagnostics of low-metallicity active galactic nuclei CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Modelling the nebular emission from primeval to present-day star-forming galaxies CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar The age and chemical evolution of high-redshift QSOs Google Scholar The chemical evolution of QSOs and the implications for cosmology and galaxy formation Google Scholar Synthetic nebular emission from massive galaxies I: origin of the cosmic evolution of optical emission-line ratios zCOSMOS: a large VLT/VIMOS redshift survey covering 0 < z < 3 in the COSMOS field Gas metallicity diagnostics in star-forming galaxies CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar The cosmic evolution survey (COSMOS): overview CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Is there a metallicity-luminosity relationship in active galactic nuclei The case of narrow-line seyfert 1 galaxies CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Ultraviolet emission lines in young low-mass galaxies at z≃2: physical properties and implications for studies at z>7 Spectral classification of emission-line galaxies CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Gilli R and Plat A (2017) Ultraviolet/Optical Emission of the Ionized Gas in AGN: Diagnostics of the Ionizing Source and Gas Properties Received: 30 August 2017; Accepted: 19 October 2017; Published: 02 November 2017 Copyright © 2017 Feltre, Charlot, Mignoli, Bongiorno, Calura, Chevallard, Curtis-Lake, Gilli and Plat. she is a fine connoisseur of the Murano glassworks or just curious to know more to discover not only the collection now housed in the Feltre museum The collection is located on the second floor of the Carlo Rizzarda Gallery with a layout curated by Franzoia himself who was already the creator of the museum’s exhibition set-up in 2000 Lesposition is a dive into the glass production of the 20th century in his various collaborations with the Cappellin and Venini firms But glass designed by many different personalities of the Murano twentieth century such as Alessandro and Laura Diaz de Santillana The first is devoted to the production of the firm Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin-Venini & C. established in 1921 by Giacomo Cappellin and Paolo Venini under the artistic direction of Vittorio Zecchin and to the models created by Zecchin that continued to be produced by the firms that came into being after the dissolution of Cappellin-Venini The second room documents the productions of the two manufactures and Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Venini & C Some of the objects refer to the presence in Murano of Carlo Scarpa (Venice But the room houses many other examples of Venini’s production from the years between 1925 and 1960 and a miscellany of products from other firms active in the lagoon is devoted to table glass: consumer objects the section offers unimportant evidence of taste and custom Most of the pieces in the collection refer to models created by Zecchin in the 1920s but examples of Venetian glassware from an earlier age are also documented such as a set of Louis XVI faceted crystal glass with gold decoration and a sampling of historicist glasses with polychrome enamel or wheel-engraved decoration There are also table crystals of non-Murano production of Belle Époque taste and some examples of Bohemian glassware marketed in Venice by the Venice and Murano Company The entire display is accompanied by a number of paintings and mosaics all belonging to the Carla Nasci-Ferruccio Franzoia collection A tool for understanding the collection in all its aspects Here we find nearly 300 cards describing the glass exhibits written in language that is easy to read even for those who do not chew technical terms and we find the biographies of the various glassmakers and makers on display But that’s not all: the photographic reproductions make it possible to immerse oneself in the colors and shapes before and after the visit The essays collected in the first part of the catalog allow the reader to fully understand the genesis of the museum and the development and trends in Venetian and Italian decorative arts during the last century Tiziana Casagrande places the Nasci-Franzoia collection in the context of the Carlo Rizzarda Gallery a collection that represents a coherent enrichment of the decorative arts museum established by bequest in his will by the celebrated master of wrought iron whose name it bears a theme already present in the doriginal nucleus of the permanent exhibition: that of glass and color which in the production of Rizzarda (Feltre 1931) is well present and in dialogue with iron as the curator explains in the following pages Rosa Barovier Mantovani recounts the relationship with the Murano tradition of the 15th and 16th centuries that is encountered in the glass of the Nasci-Franzoia collection and transformations of the Murano glassworks over the centuries up to the rebirth of the 1920s and 1930s going on to investigate the appearance on the scene of new Venetian productions in Italian exhibitions (biennials going on to investigate motives and modes of a late explosion This is followed by two essays devoted in particular to the figure of Vittorio Zecchin (Marino Barovier) and Carlo Scarpa (J.K The section closes with a six-act dialogue with the collector which allows for an in-depth investigation of his relationship with larte the ways and means by which he and his wife Carla Nasci created their collection A collection that today is for public enjoyment for what Franzoia called at the press conference an act of love having listened to the rest of the intervention an act of love to the public and to museums spaces where anyone can enjoy that collection with a mandate to expand and continue to buy and collect works of contemporary art: as often happens But the gallery remains a little gem for those who want to understand and admire the decorative arts of the Italian twentieth century The municipality promises soon the publication of a second major catalog on the wrought irons of the Rizzarda collection ITALY: Air conditioning and heat pump manufacturer Clivet has established a European hub at the SuperLab Bicocca in Milan multi-tenanted office building in the
