PITTSTON — The Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network has been honoring women over the last 10 years with the Distinguished Woman Award at the annual St
The award has been traditionally been given to a woman who has left a lasting impact on the Greater Pittston Community
“This year is the 10th anniversary of this award and I was looking for someone who brought a bigger challenge to the table or a bigger hurdle
and Rose Ferentino Grimes is the epitome of what we talk about for our Distinguished Woman,” Michelle Mikitish
“We talk about how they go about their day and they build a success because of something that triggered them to be successful.”
This year’s choice was not a difficult one in choosing Rose Ferentino Grimes
a woman who turned a tragic and sad situation being a great success story; a story of survival

she had to step it up in order for her family to survive; she ended up in the workforce
After securing a job at Prudential Insurance & Investment Company in 1986 and even though she didn’t know it at first she didn’t know it
but she would end up being a female leader in a male dominated industry
She had to find a way to balance motherhood to sons and her place in the workforce

but she stayed on with Prudential for a total of 36 years
she achieved numerous milestones for her excellence and innovation
She became a keynote speaker and published a motivational video “images” used throughout the industry
Ferentino Grimes went on to qualify for 17 business conferences and achieved five presidential citations with Prudential
“I was one of two women in the country that was a managing director
I was the only sales manager in my district that was a female
and I was the only female in my office,” Ferentino Grimes admitted
“It all has to do with your own motivation
I had four children I had to support and I did not have a college education
and live in poverty or follow the dreams their father and I had for our kids.”
In addition to raising four successful sons
the Grimes have enjoyed splitting their time living in Pittston as well as Naples

Born in Ferentino, Italy (just outside of Rome), Giuseppe Morosini was ordained to the priesthood in 1937
the same year Benito Mussolini pledged Italy’s support for Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany
and by the early 1940s he was sent by his Vincentian order to Rome to provide aid to displaced children at Ermenegildo Pistelli School
became a secret base for the Italian Resistance Movement (the partigiani)
However, the Gestapo had a mole within this resistance cell, which eventually led to Morosini’s arrest in January 1944, according to Crux News
Morosini refused to provide details regarding the Resistance
One survivor who met Morosini in prison later offered this memory of their encounter:
He was coming out of an interrogation by the SS
his swollen face dripping with blood like Christ during his passion
He blessed his own firing squad while shouting ‘God forgive them
they know not what they do,’ like Christ on Golgotha
The memory of this noble martyr lives in my soul
He was gunned down by a firing squad on April 13
a nationwide radio broadcast was sent out calling for a popular uprising and general strike against the Nazi occupation and Fascist regime by the National Liberation Committee of Upper Italy (CLNAI)
a political umbrella organization representing the Italian resistance movement
Morosini was posthumously awarded Italy’s highest civilian honor

Love In Reverse released Fake It vie DaDa Drumming Records on August 19
The 10-track album was produced and mixed by Andres Karu
and mastered by Drew Lavyne/All Digital Mastering
It features performances by Michael Ferentino
All of the songs were written by Michael Ferentino
"I began writing the majority of the songs for the new album
Most of the lyrics on this album are poetic attempts at exorcising personal demons while keeping the context broad enough to remain relatable to all listeners
The overall music and vibe of the record is a return to some of our early 90s guitar driven alt rock sound while attempting to remain relevant in the popular music landscape of the 2020s."
the New York/New Jersey based dark electronic art rock duo known as DOG
performed and gained an impressive following in some of the most iconic NY and NJ clubs including CBGB
DOG quickly evolved into the 3-piece indie/art rock/space rock band Love in Reverse
signed with Jon and Marsha Zazula’s Crazed Management (former owners of Megaforce Records) who led the band to a lucrative deal with Warner/Reprise Records
Love in Reverse recorded three critically acclaimed albums with Warner/Reprise (two with legendary producer Russ Titelman and one mixed by Grammy Award Winner
Jason Corsaro and coproduced by NIN producer
they toured with the likes of Gravity Kills
They also played several radio festivals performing with artists ranging from the Spin Doctors and Tonic to The Deftones and Joan Jett
The band’s video for “I’m a Contradiction” was featured on MTV’s 120 minutes and the video for “Blueprint for a Possible Song” was included on the sampler DVD for Sony’s first commercially available DVD player
Love in Reverse was also featured along with Peter Frampton on the Meredith Viera ABC television news show
Love in Reverse disbanded and evolved once more into the Amazing Meet Project
a band which has been described by Matt Pinfield of MTVs 120 Minutes as “putting the alternative in alternative rock!" During this period
Ferentino and Karu scored the Kevin Smith produced thriller “A Better Place,” a realistically violent film that has become an underground cult classic
Their music was also featured in “Time of Your Life,” the “Party of Five” television spin-off starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and multiple MTV specials
Among a number of positive media articles featuring the band
Rolling Stone named Love in Reverse as one of 6 new promising bands of 1996
Ferentino and Karu experimented with a myriad of projects
including the noisy lo-fi electronic garage band
the Diablo Project with Jai Diablo from Interscope Records sludge rock/stoner metal band
and the electronic ambient/experimental outfit
they teamed up with The Wonder Stuff front-man Miles Hunt for a collaboration dubbed the Miles Hunt Club
Karu also went on to become drummer and producer for the Wonder Stuff in the mid ‘00s while Dave Halpern played drums for multiple artists including the BeeGees
Ferentino continued with Bedtime for Robots
releasing several acclaimed albums and tracks throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s
Bedtime for Robots were featured in Fangoria Magazine and their music has been consistently featured on DOOMED Radio
Soma FM and multiple worldwide underground Internet radio shows
during the initial lockdown of the Coronavirus pandemic
Karu and Halpern put finishing touches on an album they had been secretly working on for the past couple of years and self-released the reformed Love in Reverse album
which brought them to the attention of Ferentino’s childhood friend and owner of Dada Drumming Records
an independent label from Texas which specialized in noise
Looking to expand the horizons of the label
now focusing on a return to their guitar-driven indie art rock sound
the band put the finishing touches on their newly recorded and arguably strongest album to date

BEAVER — A federal inmate who says he was like a father figure to two men charged in the murder of a Beaver Falls couple testified Friday the men confessed their roles in the killings to him
Isaiah Paillett said he has known Robert Burgess
since the early 1990s and that he met Devon Shealey
Paillett said it was he who introduced Burgess and Shealey to one another in 2007
Shealey is currently on trial for the June 2008 shooting deaths of Richard and Demetria Harper in their Beaver Falls home while two of the couple’s young daughters were locked in a small furnace room
Paillett offered many details about the case
some of which had been similarly testified to by other witnesses throughout the week
Paillett — who readily admitted on the witness stand that he is hoping his testimony will lessen the time he serves in prison — said he and Shealey ended up in the Allegheny County Jail together and there Shealey told him
“We handled some business up in Beaver County.”
Paillett said to him that meant Shealey and Burgess killed someone
He said Shealey told him a woman owed them money for marijuana
and he was worried Burgess was going to tell authorities about him
Shealey said if they got back on the street he wanted to kill Burgess
He said Shealey asked him if he would “handle him.” Paillett said he told Shealey he would think about it
Burgess and Paillett ended up in the same prison
and Paillett said he began to question Burgess about what happened in Beaver Falls
Paillett testified Burgess told him details of the night the Harpers were killed
including how they got into their home and about the children being there
Paillett said Shealey told him he shot Richard and then looked at Burgess like
“What are you waiting for,” and then Burgess shot Demetria
Paillett also testified he was told Shealey and Burgess were wearing black
and when the pair left the Harpers’ home they saw a neighbor looking at them from a window
Earlier in the trial a neighbor of the Harpers testified that he heard a man’s angry voice the night of the shooting
looked out his window and saw two men dressed in black getting into a car
Public Defender Kevin Kindred told Paillett he never actually talked to Shealey
Senior Special Agent Maurice Ferentino of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol
Firearms and Explosives was questioned about the information Paillett provided
Kindred suggested that Paillett never provided Shealey’s name to federal investigators
but rather Ferentino was the one who brought up Shealey’s name in association with the homicide
Ferentino testified both Thursday and Friday that when someone comes to his agency to make what is known as “proffer,” the information “flows one way” from the person making the proffer to the investigator receiving the information
According to testimony given by Ferentino on Thursday
a proffer is a written agreement used as an investigative tool by the federal government
Sometimes referred to as a “queen for a day” agreement
statements made by the person making the proffer cannot be used against that person
A person who makes a proffer can still be charged in a case
but the charges must be based on information from other parts of the investigation and not the proffer itself
Kindred asked Ferentino if he had a video of his interview with Paillett
“Are you accusing me of lying?” Ferentino asked Kindred
ECONOMYNEXT – Ferentino Tyre Corporation (Pvt) Ltd
an export oriented greenfield project which the firm says will be South Asia’s largest tyre factory
has been commissioned by Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa
The factory has been built on a 155-acre Board of Investment industrial zone in Wagawatta
The 100 million first phase was opened by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on January 14
The firm is expected to export 80 percent of its output and sell 20 percent domestically
Sri Lanka is currently under import controls after the central bank printed large volumes of money
The first stock of production is to be exported to the USA this month
Sri Lanka’s Rigid Tyre Corporation to start production from Jan 2021
earlier known as Rigid Tyre Corporation is promoted by entrepreneur Nandana Lokuwithana
The second phase is expected to come on stream by March 2021
Lokuwithana also heads Ceylon Steel Corporation and Onyx Group in the UAE
His other investments include Marriot Al Jadaf Hotel in Dubai
a cement grinding plant in Mirijjawila Hambantota which will start in May 2021 and Marangoni Industrial Tyres Lanka (Pvt) Ltd
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s 2025 local authority voting has ended with some turnout at some districts around 60 percent according to returning officers
in sharp contrast to 2018 elections which was a protest vote with high 79 percent turnout
Turnout in reported by Sri Lanka Sirasa TV quoting district returning officers after polls closed at 4.00pm were as follows
with a divided opposition and the central bank missing its 5 percent inflation target to keep inflation around 1 percent
The election was viewed as a litmus test on incumbent President Anura Kumara Dissanayake
Opposition parties have charged that his ruling National Peoples Power came to power criticizing an International Monetary Fund program but largely followed its course
The central bank has avoided its customary inflationary rate cuts and depreciation which is then followed by a stabilization crisis that had dogged all recent administrations
The 2023-2024 stabilization crisis was largely carried out by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who was ousted in the last Presidential elections
The 2018 February local government elections came in the wake of the 2017 stabilization crisis
In 2015 and 2016 the central bank and poured liquidity into the banking system
collapsing the rupee from 131 to 152 to the US dollar in the process and rate and tax hikes
But the currency collapse and the stabilization crisis had shattered the credibility of the United National Party
which was governing with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party
The then opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Party swept to power in local authorities and subsequently won the 2019 Presidential elections with a further collapse of the currency to 184 to the US dollar
under flexible inflation targeting/potential output targeting
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s rupee closed at 299.50/75 to the US dollar in the spot market Tuesday
weaker against Monday’s close of 299.48/50 dealers said
A bond maturing on 15.12.2026 closed at 8.80/87 percent
A bond maturing on 15.03.2028 closed at 9.77/85 percent
A bond maturing on 15.10.2028 closed at 9.82/85 percent
A bond maturing on 15.12.2029 closed flat at 10.25/30 percent
A bond maturing on 15.03.2031 closed at 10.68/75 percent
The central bank announced an auction of Rs
and an auction of Rs.80,000 million Treasury Bonds on May 9
ECONOMYNEXT – World Bank group president will visit Sri Lanka on May 07
the first visit by the head of the multilateral lender in 20 years
following an invitation extended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake last year
Banga’s trip “reflects the strong and enduring partnership between the World Bank Group and Sri Lanka
which spans more than 70 years,” the lender said
“His visit will focus on supporting job creation
and driving an inclusive and sustainable economic recovery for the country
as Sri Lanka continues its path toward economic recovery and seeks to build a more resilient
and senior government and private sector leaders
“These discussions will center on how Sri Lanka can overcome current challenges and seize new opportunities as it continues to recover economically and socially,” the World Bank said
The World Bank Group currently supports Sri Lanka through a portfolio of projects worth 2.2 billion
including both public and private sector investments

Ferentino unwittingly gave investigators their break after he declared payoffs to Alexander as a business expense on his income tax returns
He then helped prosecutors find other conspirators in a scheme that netted Alexander about $1.4 million in kickbacks during his 16 years in office from 1970 to 1985
Alexander ultimately pleaded guilty to racketeering in 1988
and served 5 1/2 years of a 10-year sentence in federal prison
He died of cancer in 1996 at the age of 69
Prosecutors said Ferentino paid Alexander $363,998 in return for $3 million in contracts to perform architectural work for the city from 1972 through 1985
He was granted immunity from prosecution and never served jail time
After Ferentino's payoffs were exposed in an IRS audit
the architect agreed to wear a secret wire to record conversations with co-conspirators
Some of those co-conspirators later agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors in exchange for leniency
Ferentino's architect's license was suspended for nine months
but was restored so he could resume his career in the Albany suburb of Guilderland
Ferentino never granted an interview about his involvement in Alexander's scheme or his decision to become an informant for the FBI

The company states that the news item misrepresents to the reader that the four-month tender for the supply of tyres to the Sri Lanka Transport Board has been improperly awarded and that the quality and technical specifications of the tyres to be supplied under the contract do not conform to the tender specifications and thus pose a significant threat to public safety
and could have been easily ascertained had you extended the most basic courtesy of verifying your information from our company prior to publication
The photo shows how the serial number for one of the inspected Ferentino tyre's manufactured date has been imprinted on a strip of rubber that has been applied to the tyre
It further points out that the news item refers to “concerns in transport circles about a number of crucial technical specifications that the winning bidder had itself departed from”.and adds; “We also note that your article erroneously refers to “a technical evaluation committee (TEC) finding that the product sold by the winning bidder had deviated from a multitude of fixed
predetermined specifications.” Had you duly and properly inquired into the matter prior to publication
you would have been made aware that there was no such finding by the Technical Evaluation Committee in the evaluation of Ferentino’s bid
Ferentino’s bid would not have been considered to be substantially responsive and would have been rejected at the evaluation stage
This is a fact that could have been possibly verified had the company’s and the views of the Sri Lanka Transport Board on this matter been obtained prior to the publication of your article
NEWS DESK NOTE: The news item concerned was in the public interest because it was a matter concerning public road transportation of the poor and underprivileged
We found all tender parties violated tender requirements
The Chairman of the SLTB has admitted to these flaws and argued “the tyre crisis” as the urgency to fast forward this tender despite these flaws – much the same way of the controversy involving the import of faulty pharmaceutical drugs in the health sector
With regard to Ferentino’s allegation that what we quoted was not from the Cabinet Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC)
our report did not refer to an evaluation committee appointed by Cabinet
According to a written statement by the SLTB Chairman which is now in the public domain
the Ferentino tyre samples were first found not to fit the required tender specifications by Gampaha District Engineer
he then appointed three officials of the SLTB Head Office’s Technical Division who also recommended that the procurement of these tyres could not proceed
It is the report of this “technical group” that our news report widely cites

It was a relief for me and my colleagues from the foreign press association
the Associazione della Stampa Estera: finally a journalist's trip again
The trip went to Ferentino in southern Lazio
Italian cities and regions regularly organize informative trips (educationals they call it in good Italian) for domestic and foreign journalists who specialize in travel
Some editors object to this in principle (although that has decreased since the crisis in journalism about 10 years ago)
In practice this is not so bad: the participants are overloaded with information
there is no obligation to publish and if the offer is not worth it
it will not happen or you may even get a bad review
Usually this is not the case and these types of trips
if accompanied by competent guides who know everything about the region
are a nice eye opener for the participants and certainly also for their viewers and readers
That was certainly true for Ferentino, a gem of the Ciociaria, the friendly landscape in the south of Lazio
with rolling hills of white limestone that also house the local ancient and medieval monuments
Less well known than the nearby medieval papal towns of Anagni and Alatri
Ferentino has not yet been discovered by major tourism
but it has a series of monuments that stand out
making it a great day trip destination from the 80km more northerly Rome
possibly in combination with the other towns
when there is usually not much news and editors can miss their correspondent for a day.) In addition to the 25 foreigners
a bus with at least as many Italian colleagues turned out to have arrived
But Ferentino also had something to celebrate: the beginning of the restoration of the city's Roman theater
The city council and the Archeoclub Italia (a private institution for the preservation and care of ancient heritage) had prepared the reception in great detail
a billboard placed along the road welcomed us journalists
Ferentino is located on a hill in the fertile valley of the river Sacco
tons-weighing and irregularly shaped boulders
where other clumps of stone connect seamlessly
They are the so-called Cyclopean or Pelagic walls
which in the past were thought to have been built by one-eyed giants or by the Pelasgians
a seafaring people from 1.000 years before Roman times
In reality they are in the 4e century BC
a local people who so defended themselves against aggressive neighbors like the Volsci and the Latini
who soon preferred the Ernici as an ally rather than an adversary
an impressive piece and I immediately asked myself the same question as with the hunebeds in Drenthe: How in God's name did they get those beasts in place
There doesn't seem to be a clear answer yet
You can immediately read the history of Ferentino from the 2,4 kilometer long wall
On top of the lower part – now known under the neutral and apt name of Mura Poligonali (polygonal walls) – a second layer of broad
horizontally and vertically chipped building blocks
above which is another layer of smaller chunks from the Middle Ages and at the top often also modern houses
After a reception and some chaotic accreditation due to rain and covid measures in a tent in front of the city wall
we were led through the archaic-Roman Porta Montana into the narrow streets of the old center
on our way to the antique Roman covered market
alderman and the national and local leaders of Archeoclub with hymns to the 'unique historical and cultural heritage' of which Ferentino can be so proud
That always happens on these kinds of trips
but this time the speeches were enriched with the penetrating cooing of rutted pigeons for whom the antique structure was a suitable loft
But it was also a great location for interviews for Slovenian
They don't experience that every day in Ferentino and we had a lot of attention.
in turn the heavily walled city center on the top of the hill
On the southeast side of this towers the sturdy block of the Avancorpo
the high bulwark built here between 100-80 BC
because those were years in which Rome and central Italy were torn apart by a civil war that finally ended in a bloody way by dictator Silla
This building also rests on a clearly visible pre-Roman base
A floor of the Ferentine Acropolis itself is now partly subterranean corridors and rooms
Under the vaults is a photo exhibition that gives a good picture of the havoc caused on 24 and 25 May 1944 by American bombings against a local Gestapo office
On top of the Roman structure now stands the imposing Vescovado (bishop's palace) and opposite the Duomo
a solid Romanesque jewel consecrated in 1108 with those beautiful cosmatic floors (figurative marble mosaics)
as you see in many Roman churches from that time
but two Roman brothers who were martyred) is built on the remains of an earlier church from the 9e century
The sacristy still has a fully intact cyborium
a rare piece of Longobardian sculpture with beautifully stylized peacock figures
There is also a plaque with an inscription from the 4e century
from an even older church that was probably built on the remains of a Roman temple
The facade is decorated with wonderfully naively carved lion heads and what is believed to be a portrait of the 13ecentury Emperor Frederick II
The charm of all that beauty is disturbed by the dozens of cars that more than fill up the cozy Dompleintje
time for mass and we get the sacred song for free
After lunch (a sober package because of the pandemic
the Cistercian monks in the 13e century built granary
it was time for the ceremony in the Roman theater
which was then under Emperor Trajan in the 2e century
enough for a provincial town like Ferentinum
later partly excavated and for 20 years the municipality has been asking for a subsidy to complete the excavation and demolish a few shacks above the theater
That money has now been promised and it will be quite a job
but according to the architect it can be done within a year and a half and performances can be held again after more than 1.500 years
because too much has already been lost: a local resident showed me his cellar
which opens seven meters below the theater
Antique statues had been stored there for decades
which had been stolen by the Germans during the war
the double Porta Casamari from the 2e century BC
and the pre-Roman (4e century BC) Porta Sanguinaria
the Bloody Gate whose name no one really knows
we paid another visit to a unique monument: the Testament of Aulus Quintilius Priscus
donated a significant portion of his estate to the citizens of Ferentino and everyone was allowed to know that too
That is why he had the full text of his will carved into a rock above the thoroughfare Via Casilina
where it was clearly visible to every passer-by and is still one of the main attractions of the town
we had by no means had everything there was to see in this rather small town - the municipality has 21.000 inhabitants
including the countryside - so there is every reason to come back again
That certainly also applies to the gastronomic experience
which this time got off to a poor start due to that damned virus
biochemist and president of the Archeoclub Ferentino
The cuisine of Ferentino and the Ciociaria in general is traditional cucina di terra, so no fish
with typical products as local pecorino cheese en March (hard goat cheese), prosciutto ciociaro of local pig breeds and various types of sausage enriched with wild fennel
alongside typical oil of the loiarella olive
Classic local dishes include the finifini
very nice sliced tagliatelle; the minestra con il pane sotto: soup of different types of legumes and vegetables
poured out on a firm slab casareccio bread (coarse baker's bread); the timballo di maccheroni, pasta baked in a baking tin with all kinds of meat and tomato sauce
or without (in blank) with rabbit and/or mushrooms
And don't forget the lasagna alla ciociara
which is not that different from the standard lasagna
but (unlike that of northern Italy) must not contain any butter and must be at least 7 layers thick
the best place to try those in Ferentino is at the Trattoria Consolare
while if you're more into haute cuisine and money is not an issue
you can go to Ristorante Bassetto. Seeing is believing
