Federal Trade Commission is ensuring manufacturers stay compliant with the label's strict standards for both production and marketing And with the Trump administration urging the onshoring of America’s manufacturing industry New York-based Ferrara Manufacturing is one example of an apparel maker focused on producing and sourcing its products in the U.S The company specializes in highly technical and tailored garments producing everything from Olympians' outfits to military gear and Ralph Lauren jackets Manufacturing Dive caught up with family-owned manufacturer’s COO Gabrielle Ferrara Ferrara’s 50,000-square-foot apparel manufacturing facility in Long Island City The company focuses on leveraging advanced manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and automatic sewing as well as innovation in diversifying its customers Ferrara gave Manufacturing Dive a tour of the New York facility which was formerly located in the city's iconic Garment District 1987 is the year when production just started drastically It was a really challenging business,” Ferrara said they wanted to make products of a certain level Between 1958 and 1977, the number of garment manufacturing firms in Manhattan was cut in half, from 10,329 to 5,096, according to the Garment District Alliance data The trend continued through the latter half of the 20th century as more production moved abroad due to cheaper labor in Hong Kong Ferrara prides itself on producing “Made-in-USA” apparel, which is a strict standard to meet, as manufacturers must ensure that “all or virtually all ingredients or components of the product are made and sourced in the United States," according to the Federal Trade Commission “It makes sense to make that product here in the United States or in Europe because you tend to have lower [minimum order quantity] There's a lot of design and detail that go into that type of product so it makes sense to have that close by,” she said In order to stay afloat during the pandemic the company started producing PPE for the U.S which has since become one of the manufacturer's biggest contracts the contract has boosted Ferrara’s budget for innovation The government contract has also taught Ferrara how to make technical and high quality garments it's been a really magical few years where we've finally been able to invest in scalable technology and things that can be applied to military stuff that then the private sector benefits from.” she said And to bring down production costs and hire people with less years of sewing experience “We work really well as a family and a team so my brother prints a lot of the 3D parts that we then use for the equipment so some of the gears on this machine are actually 3D-printed,” she said “We augment a lot of our equipment to make it even more precise because our standards are really high because we work with the Olympics and the Ralph Lauren products.” 3D printing also lowers the skill threshold needed to complete tasks like sewing a jacket “[Angelo Ferrara] actually was the one that was like ‘We should 3D print this,’ because usually these pieces are created in metal so now we have our whole library over there of parts that match to a bunch of 2D-pattern pieces to automate a lot of functions on the jacket,” Ferrara said The apparel maker has been an Olympics partner with Ralph Lauren since 2014 Ferrara made the opening ceremony blazer and flag bearer blazer and the striped shirt produced the moto jacket and the flag bearer jacket The garment manufacturer also invests in automatic sewing machines “We have a lot of really talented operators here but if we want to scale our business and double our jacket production these are the machines that are going to allow us to do that,” Ferrara said Customers are requesting "Made-In-USA" products more frequently than they used to in the past One challenge has been to domestically source all materials for which there isn't a large industry in the U.S Europe produces a lot more apparel and textile than the United States and we have a much bigger consumer market here in terms of labor costs and materials," she said." So why doesn't the US have a comparably sized clothing and textile industry The European Union exports 218 billion euros worth of textiles and apparel around the world, while the U.S. exports 20 billion euros, according to a 2024 publication by the European Apparel and Textile Confederation From its origins to its now luxury-quality products Ferrara Manufacturing is all about tailored and fitted apparel “I feel like when you have a piece of clothing that fits you perfectly there's almost nothing better," Ferrara said "It's actually quite an emotional experience." Our condolences to Ferarra’s family and friends and in honor of The Bull here is the very first Spitballin’ featuring Al Ferrara As the 1970 Major League Baseball season was starting Al Ferrara was ready to move past some of the indecision that followed him in the early part of his career The powerful righty was stuck in a loaded Los Angeles Dodgers outfield his first few years in the Majors bound to the franchise by the Reserve Clause he finally broke through when given the chance at the age of 27 He played in over 100 games for the first time batted .277 and led the Dodgers with 16 home runs he broke his ankle in the second game of the 1968 season and then was selected by the San Diego Padres in the expansion draft becoming an original member of the franchise Ferrara recovered from his broken ankle and became one of the top players in the team’s inaugural season Ferrara was looking to put together back-to-back productive full seasons for the first time in his Major League career Ellis was 25 years old and trying to harness his natural ability while battling demons that would chase him throughout his career Ellis was entering his second full season in the Pirates rotation as the franchise was ready to embark on its most successful decade He would be the starting pitcher in the All-Star Game for the National League the following year and would go on to pitch in five postseasons he was still trying to find himself on the mound Ellis and Ferrara’s paths crossed 50 years ago in an odd piece of baseball history that served as a harbinger of the colorful decade that was about to follow The 1970s was when baseball started to transition from the buttoned-down traditions of yesteryear to the individual expressionism and branding of the final decades of the millennium Dock Ellis pitched the first no-hitter of the season against Ferrara’s Padres Later Ellis admitted to being high on LSD when he pitched that day The story that accompanied his admission included sleeping through an entire day a mad dash from Los Angeles to San Diego and Jimi Hendrix up at the plate swinging a guitar instead of a bat As the 50th anniversary of Dock Ellis’ LSD no-hitter approaches on June 12 who batted third for the Padres against Ellis that day Before we get into your role in Dock Ellis’ no-hitter can you tell us about how you became a part of the Dodgers organization The kid next to me said that the Dodgers were having a tryout the next day at Ebbets Field for a team called the Dodgers Rookies but it beats this shit that we’re doing here.” I said we’re going.” It was a lot of instruction and they’d take you up and down the East Coast I went there and they were working out a guy named Carl Yastrzemski He was a big deal there and he was hitting balls out into Bedford Avenue I was shagging and one of the coaches called me in and told me to take five swings but I took five swings and the first three balls landed in the stands at Ebbets Field They told me to come back tomorrow to play in a game I came back the next day and went 0-for-4 and didn’t hit a ball out of the infield But they called the next day and told me that they wanted me for the Brooklyn Rookies and they got me a scholarship to play at LIU There were 16 teams in the big leagues at the time and no draft My contemporaries I played with were Joe Torre We all played in the same area at the same time and those guys had ten teams bidding for them My father made a deal with the Dodgers that since I had a scholarship they should give me what the scholarship was worth which was the remaining tuition at LIU for my final three years I went to the minor leagues and my first salary was $300 a month and one dollar a day meal money for Class D Orlando You had a steady climb through the minors and were very productive over your five-year minor league career Take us through the process of working your way up to the Majors The Dodgers at the time had 16 minor league teams In my second year they had a list on the wall and if you didn’t see your name on the list I came running down the hall to see the list The Dodgers Vice President stopped me and said “I’m going to see where the hell I’m going!” He said you’re going to Reno.” Reno was C Ball and I went there as a fourth outfielder the left fielder had a cold and couldn’t play I got four hits and didn’t come out of the lineup instead of being a “suspect,” I became a “prospect.” I went up and played for the Atlanta Crackers in the Southern League and knocked in 100 runs I was a hot prospect now and went up to AAA in 1962 to Spokane I reverted back and became a “suspect” again I went to Spring Training and the Dodgers had all the big leaguers right with us A first baseman who played for the Yankees had gotten traded over to us Moose was by the batting cages and I didn’t say a word I was just a minor leaguer and didn’t wanna get in the way of the big leaguers He was talking about how he started his swing picking up his left heel to get everything in motion We went off to Spokane and the first two weeks I was terrible we had a doubleheader and we got bombed out in the first game who became the Phillies manager many years later why don’t I try what Skowron said.” First pitch I picked up my heel and I hit the ball like a rocket over the left field wall I was the Triple Crown winner and I got called up to the Dodgers Did you grow up a Dodgers fan having lived in Brooklyn Learned how to play baseball in the streets of New York Most kids in New York wanted to be baseball players and I wanted to play for the Dodgers I got a 30 in Mechanical Drawing and my father decided What was it like getting called up to the Dodgers By the time I got called up to the Dodgers I had five better outfielders than me on the roster We had the greatest Los Angeles team in Dodgers history in 1963 and I’m the sixth outfielder I did go to three World Series and I got a hit in the World Series I sat four years of my prime watching this great team But I was a member of two World Series championship teams I led the team in every offensive department I proved that I could play in the big leagues I’m batting cleanup for the Dodgers and I’m the man Then I break my ankle in the second game of the season and was out for the whole year You were also a member of the original Padres I hit the first pinch-hit grand slam in Padres history I was in a cast with my broken ankle when they picked me in the Expansion Draft I gave 100% from the time I hit that door until that game was over but nobody played harder and nobody wanted to win more than me When the time came when I was no longer useful when I was hurt and they didn’t know if I could play again or what I was gonna be We had some guys that could hit and some pitching but both years I played there we lost over 100 games but anyone who was going to be a halfway decent player they got rid of them because they didn’t want to pay them The team was afraid though that they were too good and would want more than the minimum salary What’s your best memory of being with the Padres They actually just had the 50th anniversary of it and New York was all over me to do interviews for it who was the God of the Mets as well he should be The ten in a row to end the game still stands If someone strikes out ten in a row in a lineup I was the first in that streak and the last I love the record; I want that record to stand as long as I live It gets me attention and I talk to people and have fun with it I hit a home run in the second inning off of him It was a day game at Shea and you couldn’t see nothing because of the sun July 2016: Former Dodgers player Al Ferrara during the Dodgers Old-Timers Game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles (Photo by Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Did you realize what was going on as it was happening They didn’t have stuff up on the scoreboard or anything saying that this is a record All I knew was the people were going nuts in the stands for some reason I didn’t know he had a strikeout streak going He’s gonna get me on a strikeout or it’s gonna be a home run I went up and swung big at the first pitch I was very good at knowing the strike zone It was something I worked on and studied and got very good in my career I also knew that the umpire probably didn’t even see it it’s 1-2 and I’m not gonna let this umpire become the hero and call me out on a third strike That was the record and I have a good time with it I was up 26 times against him and struck out 15 times Your second year you were in the lineup against the Pirates for Dock Ellis’ no-hitter but the problem with Dock was at times he would lose concentration or have other things on his mind I don’t think that he ever realized his potential but his problems cost him that chance to become a really great one I wanted you to throw me a 100 MPH fastball and if it was down But Dock’s ball moved in on a right-handed hitter so he owned the outside part of the plate with his breaking ball And that damned fastball that he kept down Did you realize anything was amiss when Dock was on the mound that day Dock looked like he was on drugs or alcohol Do you think the LSD effected his performance that day He just kept getting the ball and firing it and before you knew it He didn’t need any help and he was on a team that can score runs I don’t know if the LSD had to do with the walks All I know is I saw a kid that night with all this potential What did you think when the stories later came out that he claimed he was on LSD When I found out later that he was on LSD for the no-hitter He came from a tough area in Los Angeles and those guys didn’t give a damn for nothing that was their culture and he loved to play The culture in Los Angeles at that time was LSD and he liked it I was from Brooklyn and I took amphetamines I always thought LSD was something more of a California thing It didn’t phase me one bit when they said he was on LSD that night because I knew he was capable of doing that when he was sober Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me Do you have any other thoughts looking back and reflecting on your career I learned early in my career that when I came to the big leagues that I was facing the greatest pitchers of that time this might have been the greatest pitchers of any generation that came out of the 60s so you just have to tip your cap because they are great Major Leaguers when you got to the eighth inning against them Don Newcombe started both games of a doubleheader and hit a home run too They don’t get 304 complete games in ten years combined for the whole league now I am not gonna sit here and knock the current generation though They’re terrific athletes and fine players I am from a different era and we played a different game and I love my game I have no complaints from anything from my career The Reserve Clause is something I think hindered me I wanna play.” But now looking back as an old guy I wanna tell you I’m a two-time World Series champion I might have got more playing time somewhere else but what am I gonna tell you today if that happened That I hit .270 with a bunch of homers for the Cubs or Milwaukee or the Phillies but when I say I’m a two-time World Series Rocco is a baseball writer with too much time on his hands who lives in the dusty corners of Ferrara co-founded InteleTravel with chairman Joseph Traina Sr. in 1991. Ferrara was first InteleTravel's executive vice president and chief marketing officer, and he became president in 2005. Today, InteleTravel sits at No. 23 on Travel Weekly's Power List with 2023 sales of $1.06 billion The host agency said it will again surpass $1 billion in sales this year and the entire Intravel group will exceed $3 billion in sales InteleTravel said it will make an announcement about its new leadership before the year is over Ferrara said there will be a transitional period his strategy is simple: "Make the enterprise And we're doing that through acquisition." Intravel's acquisitions of Hickory, McVeigh and Major Travel are all relatively recent He's focused on two kinds of acquisitions: Adding travel retail businesses like Hickory in the corporate space and McVeigh in the meetings space and vertical integration of new travel products like its acquisition of Major Travel Further vertical integration is coming in December Intravel also has a geographic expansion strategy in play Ferrara said the company is working on European Union expansion The final piece of his strategy involves technology leading-edge technology in the travel space that can impact our operational efficiency our ability to service our growing network of companies and InteleTravel's growing network of agents," he said Like many travel companies, Intravel is bringing AI programs and products to advisors through its proprietary tech stack But he is also looking to adopt the work of others considering how fast the space is moving Ferrara is eyeing educational innovations for advisors whether that comes in the form of a person with Bethany Webster-Grant joining InteleTravel at the end of last year as director of sales and agent success Improving education will help advisors sell more Correction: James Ferrara has been InteleTravel's president An earlier version of this report mistakenly said he was CEO Jerry Ferrara may have seemed like an odd candidate to replace Craig Carton at WFAN When Carton announced plans to leave afternoon drive on WFAN to focus on his morning television show on FS1 nearly two years ago, Tiki Barber quickly emerged as the most logical candidate to become Evan Roberts’ next co-host. But there were also reports about the station’s interest in Ferrara more commonly known as Turtle from Entourage Ferrara recently joined the Awful Announcing Podcast and said there was a moment where co-hosting afternoon drive on WFAN was a legitimate possibility he had already removed himself from consideration by the time Andrew Marchand reported about his candidacy Ferrara guessed releasing his name as a candidate may have been a way of generating buzz about the opening “I took myself out pretty early on because I just wasn’t in a place to move back to New York at that time I don’t know if they were set on their decision,” Ferrara said of WFAN before insisting his interest was real very seriously considering it because it’s WFAN Ferrara has never hosted a daily radio show the former Entourage actor co-hosts the Throwbacks podcast with Matt Leinart But a weekly podcast is very different from the daily grind of radio Would you even want to do that?’” Ferrara recalled do you know what it’s like working on an acting set?’ Five days a week maybe its eight months a year… I know the grind; I respect it I know what I would have been getting into It wasn’t the grind that ultimately caused Ferrara to pass on pursuing the job any further than his initial interest. It was the relocation and, maybe more importantly, the fact that he would essentially have to give up his acting career. Ferrara also told Awful Announcing he’s interested in a potential Entourage reunion That can’t happen if you’re a full-time New York sports radio host like many sports fans who grew up in New York Brandon Contes is a staff writer for Awful Announcing and The Comeback He previously helped carve the sports vertical for Mediaite and spent more than three years with Barrett Sports Media Send tips/comments/complaints to bcontes@thecomeback.com "I'm a free agent on July 1 and can't wait to dig in on my next ventures."  "Even the Dave Campo era had more sizzle."
